Local Temperature Measurement in Molecular Dynamics Simulations with Rigid Constraints.

Constraining molecules in simulations (such as with constant bond lengths and/or angles) reduces their degrees of freedom (DoF), which in turn affects temperature calculations in those simulations. When local temperatures are measured, e.g., from a set of atoms in a subvolume or from velocities in one Cartesian direction, the result can appear to unphysically violate equipartition of the kinetic energy if the local DoF are not correctly calculated. Here, we determine how to correctly calculate local temperatures from arbitrary Cartesian component kinetic energies, accounting for general geometric constraints, by self-consistently evaluating the DoF of atoms subjected to those constraints. The method is validated on a variety of test systems, including systems subject to a temperature gradient and those confined between walls. It is also shown to provide a sensitive test for the breakdown of kinetic energy equipartition caused by the approximate nature of numerical integration or insufficient equilibration times. As a practical demonstration, we show that kinetic energy equipartition between C and H atoms connected by rigid bonds can be violated even at the commonly used time step of 2 fs and that this equipartition violation appears to usefully indicate configurational overheating.

Experimental study of convective heat transfer with a multi-scale roughness

The heat transfer in a turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection with a multi-scale roughness at the bottom is studied experimentally. Two different regimes for the heat transfer are found. The first regime has scaling exponent γI=0.4 and corresponds to the reduced values of the Nusselt number. The second regime with enhanced values of the Nusselt number has a scaling exponent γII=0.32, which is noticeably larger than in the case of smooth boundaries. Significant variation in the Prandtl number (from 6.4 to 62) does not change the scaling exponent value of the second regime but increases the values of Nusselt number. The scaling exponent for the relation Re∼Raα is insensitive to the change of the heat transfer regime and is close to 1/2 for all values of Ra. The characteristic ratio of the velocity pulsations to the mean velocity does not depend on the Rayleigh number and is characterized by close values (about 0.8). The local temperature measurements support the mechanism of the transition from the reduced Nusselt number regime to the enhanced one, which is based on the formation of flows between obstacles.

Exploring the Frontiers of Cell Temperature Measurement and Thermogenesis.

The precise measurement of cell temperature and an in-depth understanding of thermogenic processes are critical in unraveling the complexities of cellular metabolism and its implications for health and disease. This review focuses on the mechanisms of local temperature generation within cells and the array of methods developed for accurate temperature assessment. The contact and noncontact techniques are introduced, including infrared thermography, fluorescence thermometry, and other innovative approaches to localized temperature measurement. The role of thermogenesis in cellular metabolism, highlighting the integral function of temperature regulation in cellular processes, environmental adaptation, and the implications of thermogenic dysregulation in diseases such as metabolic disorders and cancer are further discussed. The challenges and limitations in this field are critically analyzed while technological advancements and future directions are proposed to overcome these barriers. This review aims to provide a consolidated resource for current methodologies, stimulate discussion on the limitations and challenges, and inspire future innovations in the study of cellular thermodynamics.

Nanomechanical thermometry for probing sub-nW thermal transport

Accurate local temperature measurement at micro and nanoscales requires thermometry with high resolution because of ultra-low thermal transport. Among the various methods for measuring temperature, optical techniques have shown the most precise temperature detection, with resolutions reaching (~10−9 K). In this work, we present a nanomechanical device with nano-Kelvin resolution (~10−9 K) at room temperature and 1 atm. The device uses a 20 nm thick silicon nitride (SiN) membrane, forming an air chamber as the sensing area. The presented device has a temperature sensing area >1 mm2 for micro/nanoscale objects with reduced target placement constraints as the target can be placed anywhere on the >1 mm2 sensing area. The temperature resolution of the SiN membrane device is determined by deflection at the center of the membrane. The temperature resolution is inversely proportional to the membrane’s stiffness, as detailed through analysis and measurements of stiffness and noise equivalent temperature (NET) in the pre-stressed SiN membrane. The achievable heat flow resolution of the membrane device is 100 pW, making it suitable for examining thermal transport on micro and nanoscales.

Computer-aided engineering: Quantification of the heating non-uniformity and distribution of the thermal load occurring during continuous ohmic and conventional thermal food sterilization

The characterization of continuous thermal processing (CTP) is a crucial aspect in the design and selection of technologies for the production of safe products with optimal quality retention after the thermal stress. Conventional methods for CTP characterization are constrained in their capacity to comprehensively capture the complex dynamics of fluid flow through pipelines and the different heating principles that contribute to local temperature variations. These methods rely on isolated local temperature measurements, which fail to account for the intricate interactions between temperature, heat transfer phenomena and fluid dynamics. In view of the aforementioned limitations, this study presents the implementation of a computational fluid dynamic digital model as a toolbox for the characterization and comparison of a conventional heating (CH) ultra-high temperature (UHT) sterilization process and ohmic heating (OH) UHT sterilization. This serves as a tool for an extensive and accurate comparison of the two processes. The model enabled the estimation of each technology's thermal load through the F0 value, thereby providing a more comprehensive assessment than local temperature measurements alone. Furthermore, this approach accounted for the flow behavior throughout the sterilization process. This strategy demonstrated that 2.5 % of the food product is exposed to an up to 75.4 times the average thermal load, whereas for OH treatments only 0.4 % of the product was exposed up to 5.1 times the average thermal load. This is due to the volumetric heating feature of OH, which leads to a 54.7 % reduction in the cooking grade of the product. Furthermore, the computer-aided comparison revealed no statistically significant difference (p-value of 0.6) between the two technologies in their capacity to inactivate Geobacillus stearothermophilus spores in terms of thermal load. This study highlights the importance of computer-aided engineering methodologies for the technological assessment of food sterilization processes prior to industrial transfer.

Thermographic assessment of skin temperature after lumbar spine surgery: Useful method for detection of wound complications? A pilot study.

Wound complications after lumbar spine surgery may result in prolonged hospitalization and increased morbidity. Early identification can trigger appropriate management. The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy of infrared-based wound assessment (FLIR) after lumbar spine surgery in the context of identifying wound healing disorders. 62 individuals who underwent lumbar spine surgery were included. The immediate postoperative course was studied, and the patient's sex, age, body mass index (BMI), heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, numeric rating scale for pain (NRS), C-reactive protein (CRP), leukocyte, and hemoglobin levels were noted and compared to thermographic measurement of local surface temperature in the wound area. Measurement of local surface temperature in the wound area showed a consistent temperature distribution while it was uneven in case of wound healing disorder. In this instance, the region of the wound where the wound healing disorder occured had a lower temperature than the surrounding tissue (p> 0.05). This study demonstrates the ongoing importance of clinical wound assessment for early detection of complications. While laboratory parameter measurement is crucial, FLIR may serve as a cost-effective supplemental tool in clinical wound evaluation. Patient safety risks appear minimal since local ST is measured without touch.

Exploring ice melting dynamics in beverageware

The ice-melting process inside water-filled beverageware is studied experimentally, theoretically, and numerically. An ice body is immersed in warm fresh water in different-shaped glass cups. The ice body eventually melts due to heat transfer from the warmer fluid to the ice. As the ice melts and cools the surrounding fluid, it promotes complex time-dependent laminar flows characterized by a vertical downward jet beneath the ice body and rotating convective cells in the fluid domain. Experimental results obtained through dye visualization, particle image velocity, and local temperature measurements show that the size and number of the rotating cells, jet velocity, and melting time of the ice depend significantly on the shape of the beverageware. A one-dimensional analytical solution reproduces qualitatively the hydrodynamical and thermal boundary layers close to the ice body. Further, a two-dimensional numerical model correctly captures the main features of the experimental observations.

Investigation of current density and temperature distribution characteristics under transient conditions based on a 108 cm2 segmented proton exchange membrane fuel cell

Visualizing the electrochemical and temperature distribution characteristics inside proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) should greatly contribute to the product development and performance optimization. In the study, a customized 27-segment 108 cm2 fuel cell was fabricated based on the printed circuit board methodology to achieve the local current density and local voltage measurement. In addition, 27 thermocouples were embedded in the segmented cathode graphite gas flow plate for local temperature measurement. Detailed information of fuel cell core components, multi-channel data acquisition system, external temperature control system, and uncertainty analysis was presented. According to the test results of 4000 s current rising conditions and 2400 s current decreasing conditions, the measurement deviation of total current between data acquisition system and TOYO test station is 2.4%–3.2%. Meanwhile, the deviation of output voltage ranges from 0.1% to 2.6%. To quantify the degree of distribution non-uniformity, the range and standard deviation of local parameter values as well as contour map are demonstrated. The non-uniformity of local current density and local temperature becomes more significant under higher operating current conditions. Furthermore, the degree of parameter non-uniformity is more noticeable under current rising conditions compared with current decreasing conditions. The transient increase of operating current leads to the sudden overshoot phenomena of local current range, and the change of local current density among all segments is instantaneously finished. However, the range of current demonstrates relatively smooth transition trends when reactant flow rate rises. Higher temperature area appears in the middle of membrane electrode assembly, especially in the position with higher local current density. The parameter distribution and transition characteristics could provide helpful guidance for fuel cell optimization and diagnosis.

KHz Rate Fs/Ps-CARS Thermometry For Supersonic H_2/Air Combustion Studies

Accurate flow field measurements are essential to probe the phenomena involved in aeronautical engines undergoing high temperature and high turbulences. Indeed, reliable experimental datasets are needed to compare and validate numerical models. Among other laser diagnostics, Coherent Anti-stokes Raman Scattering (CARS) is a well-established non-linear spectroscopic technique used to probe harsh environments, since it provides non-intrusive local point measurements of chemical composition and temperature. We report here hybrid fs/ps Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman Scattering (fs/ps-CARS) thermometry campaign performed on N 2 in a supersonic H2 /air combustion. We used a mobile and compact laser architecture that shapes, synchronize and generates the laser beams necessary for CARS spectroscopy. The instrument was moved to a large-scale facility representative of a scramjet combustor (ONERA LAERTE/LAPCAT-II bench). H2 /air was injected during several burst at 0,12 and 0,15 equivalent ratios. Using kHz single-shot measurements combined with motorized translation stages, spatial and temporal resolution were obtained to probe the flow and the combustion at various positions upstream and downstream the hydrogen injectors. At these positions, horizontal and vertical temperature profiles were retrieved and compared with a numerical unsteady fluid dynamic simulation using delayed detached eddy simulations (DDES) developed at ONERA (CEDRE). The position of the combustion inside the combustion chamber could be identified through several horizontal and vertical profile temperature measurements. The signal-to-noise ratio of the detection was optimized by empirically adjusting the number of averaged laser shots based on the level of flow turbulence. For instance, far downstream the H2 injection, averaging over 10 to 100 pulses was possible as the heated air flow was steady. This was confirmed by the good agreement with numerical simulations although some distortion could still be observed and will be used to adjust the numerical simulation algorithm. However, averaging was no longer possible close to the injectors, where a highly turbulent H2 /air combustion was observed. Nevertheless, taking advantages of the high rate single-shot capacity of the spectroscopic technique, temperature could still be retrieved inside this area. These measurements provided a valuable experimental database for comparing and refining computational fluid dynamics modeling.

Modeling and validation of a water-cooled Reactor Cavity Cooling System (RCCS)

High Temperature Gas-cooled Reactors (HTGRs) have garnered interest for use in commercial energy production and for providing high temperature process heat for industrial applications. One of the passive safety systems suggested for decay heat removal in accident conditions is known as the Reactor Cavity Cooling System (RCCS). Two steady-state experimental data sets with varying Reynolds numbers (Re = 2490, 10279) conducted with the TAMU RCCS experimental facility were modeled and simulated using the computational fluid dynamics code STAR-CCM + and the TRACE system thermal hydraulics code for code validation. It was found that both the CFD and system code models showed good agreement with respect to the global conditions of the internal flow within the RCCS. Comparisons of the local temperature measurements showed that the TRACE code tended to overpredict temperatures toward the bottom of the RCCS cooling panel but showed good agreement above the midpoint of the RCCS risers. The CFD model found significant thermal stratification and recirculation in the Low Reynolds case due to the asymmetric heating profile applied to the riser panel. The bottom and lower manifold geometries of the RCCS design were also found to produce asymmetrical flow conditions which led to differences in local riser temperatures.

Design energy flexibility within a comfort and climate box – An experimental evaluation of the internal heat pump control effects

Heat pumps are key in decarbonising the heating and cooling sector, while also supporting further integration of renewable energy resources when flexible heat pump operation is allowed. Within this context, smartly combining a heat pump, thermal energy storage and control system into a single product was introduced by the International Energy Agency and was named as a Comfort and Climate Box. Regarding heat pumps, manufacturers mainly include internal control constraints on the compressor ramping rate, cycling times, pump control etc. to ensure a safe and reliable operation. While these rules can generally not be bypassed, current literature mainly neglects or simplifies these control constraints, while the potential effects on the energy flexibility provision remains unknown. This leads to two main uncertainties. One the one hand on how flexible heat pumps really are when having to communicate from an overarching control system to the actual heat pump system, taking into account all the different internal heat pump control strategies. On the other hand, uncertainties also arise on which control aspects are of crucial importance to incorporate, even within a simplified heat pump model. Hence, this paper aims to experimentally investigate the effects of the on-board heat pump control in a Comfort and Climate Box system, while providing energy flexibility services, both for space heating and domestic hot water services. Comparison of experimental results retrieved from a hardware-in-the-loop set-up to results obtained from a simplified heat pump simulation tool for design energy flexibility evaluation showed deviations up to 17.73 % on the flexibility efficiency, 125.95 % on the charging time and 32.90 % on the discharging time. These results prove the requirement of incorporating the internal heat pump control for energy flexibility analysis, even within the design stage. Investigated aspects included the compressor ramping rate, back-up heater control, pump control, temperature measurement location in a thermal energy storage and the hydraulic integration of a thermal energy storage. Results show that especially the compressor ramping rate and mutual influence between the compressor speed, pump speed and back-up heater power cannot be neglected and should be incorporated in any heat pump model for energy flexibility analysis.

Numerical Calculation and Direct Measurement of Local Hot Spot Temperatures in Transformer Clamping Plates

A verified multiphysics model is developed to simulate local hot spot temperatures in clamping structures. Stray field losses in clamping plates are obtained with the use of nonlinear impedance boundary condition through finite element method (FEM) while hot spot temperatures are simulated with the use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD). This multiphysics coupling is validated through direct measurements of local hot spot temperatures that were carried out with fiber optic temperature probes in real transformer. The local hot spot temperatures obtained with the simulations were in good agreement with the measured values, thus verifying overall approach and indirectly the calculation of local stray field losses.

Sensitive, accurate, and high spatiotemporal resolution photonic thermometry

Real-time temperature monitoring with high accuracy and spatiotemporal resolution is critical for many biological applications, including disease diagnosis, drug delivery, and biomedical research. However, traditional methods for measuring temperature in biological systems present difficulties for a variety of reasons, such as slow response time, limited spatial resolution, low amplitude, and susceptibility to electromagnetic interference. Most importantly, in many cases, the thermal mass of temperature probes limits the accuracy and speed of measurement significantly. Here, we show that photonic microring resonators (MRRs) can be used for sensitive, precise, and high spatiotemporal resolution measurement of temperature in the biological milieu. The high refractive index of Si MRR and negligible thermal mass enable sensitive, ultrafast, and accurate temperature transients. By using a double resonator circuit, we demonstrate that MRR sensors can measure temperature with a 1 mm spatial resolution. We then show that MRR yields more accurate results than fiber optic probes for measuring temperature transients. Finally, we demonstrate the localized temperature measurement capability of MRRs in mouse brain tissue heated by superparamagnetic nanoparticles in an alternating magnetic field. This compact, lab-on-chip photonic temperature sensing platform holds great promise for continuous monitoring of temperature in critical biological and biomedical applications.

A three-probe method for accurate nanoscale thermal transport measurements

Measurements of transport phenomena are constantly plagued by contact resistance, prohibiting the sample's intrinsic electrical or thermal conductivity from being accurately determined. This predicament is particularly severe in thermal transport measurements due to the inability to meet similar impedance requirements for a four-probe method used in electrical resistance measurements. Here, we invent a three-probe measurement method that makes an accurate determination of thermal conductivity possible for nanomaterials. Incorporating electron beam heating provided by a scanning electron microscope (SEM) on a diffusive thermal conductor not only quantifies the thermal contact resistance, which may introduce an error of more than 270% to a sample's thermal conductivity, but also eliminates several device uncertainties that may contribute an additional 17% error in a measurement. The method also enables local temperature measurements, revealing nanoscale structural variations unfound by SEM. The high accuracy of the technique would make standardization of nanoscale thermal transport measurement possible.

Miniaturized implantable temperature sensors for the long-term monitoring of chronic intestinal inflammation.

Diagnosing and monitoring inflammatory bowel diseases, such as Crohn's disease, involves the use of endoscopic imaging, biopsies and serology. These infrequent tests cannot, however, identify sudden onsets and severe flare-ups to facilitate early intervention. Hence, about 70% of patients with Crohn's disease require surgical intestinal resections in their lifetime. Here we report wireless, miniaturized and implantable temperature sensors for the real-time chronic monitoring of disease progression, which we tested for nearly 4 months in a mouse model of Crohn's-disease-like ileitis. Local measurements of intestinal temperature via intraperitoneally implanted sensors held in place against abdominal muscular tissue via two sutures showed the development of ultradian rhythms at approximately 5 weeks before the visual emergence of inflammatory skip lesions. The ultradian rhythms showed correlations with variations in the concentrations of stress hormones and inflammatory cytokines in blood. Decreasing average temperatures over the span of approximately 23 weeks were accompanied by an increasing percentage of inflammatory species in ileal lesions. These miniaturized temperature sensors may aid the early treatment of inflammatory bowel diseases upon the detection of episodic flare-ups.

Temperature-Automated Calibration Methods for a Large-Area Blackbody Radiation Source.

High-precision temperature control of large-area blackbodies has a pivotal role in temperature calibration and thermal imaging correction. Meanwhile, it is necessary to correct the temperature difference between the radiating (surface of use) and back surfaces (where the temperature sensor is installed) of the blackbody during the testing phase. Moreover, large-area blackbodies are usually composed of multiple temperature control channels, and manual correction in this scenario is error-prone and inefficient. At present, there is no method that can achieve temperature-automated calibration for a large-area blackbody radiation source. Therefore, this article is dedicated to achieving temperature-automated calibration for a large-area blackbody radiation source. First, utilizing two calibrated infrared thermometers, the optimal temperature measurement location was determined using a focusing algorithm. Then, a three-axis movement system was used to obtain the true temperature at the same measurement location on a large-area blackbody surface from different channels. This temperature was subtracted from the blackbody's back surface. The temperature difference was calculated employing a weighted algorithm to derive the parameters for calibration. Finally, regarding experimental verification, the consistency error of the temperature measurement point was reduced by 85.4%, the temperature uniformity of the surface source was improved by 40.4%, and the average temperature measurement deviation decreased by 43.8%. In addition, this system demonstrated the characteristics of strong environmental adaptability that was able to perform temperature calibration under the working conditions of a blackbody surface temperature from 100 K to 573 K, which decreased the calibration time by 9.82 times.

On discriminating tokamak sawtooth crash models via localized density and temperature measurements

The core electron temperature drops rapidly during the sawtooth crash in tokamak plasmas, which causes heat loss and may lead to fast particle losses or even a disruption. Several models have been proposed for the periodic crash, including the Kadomtsev model with magnetic reconnection and the quasi-interchange model with the growth of higher-mode-number pressure-driven instabilities. 3D MHD simulations were performed for these two models with a goal to develop intuition and to predict qualitatively how different types of sawtooth will appear in various diagnostics. The structures of electron density ne and electron temperature Te show a dominant (1, 1) mode for the Kadomtsev case and a dominant (4, 4) mode for the quasi-interchange case. The oscillations of ne and Te have a positive correlation near the inversion layer for both cases, while their frequencies and amplitudes are different depending on the dominant modes. Particularly, for the Kadomtsev case, we find a relation between the amount of flux reconnected during a sawtooth event and ne or Te oscillations. Therefore, we connect recently developed measurement capabilities for ne and Te to the internal sawtooth behavior. We propose that this method of analysis can help in identifying the type of sawtooth in future experiments augmented by simulations.

Deep Interpolation of Remote Sensing Land Surface Temperature Data with Partial Convolutions.

Land Surface Temperature (LST) is an important resource for a variety of tasks. The data are mostly free of charge and combine high spatial and temporal resolution with reliable data collection over a historical timeframe. When remote sensing is used to provide LST data, such as the MODA11 product using information from the MODIS sensors attached to NASA satellites, data acquisition can be hindered by clouds or cloud shadows, occluding the sensors' view on different areas of the world. This makes it difficult to take full advantage of the high resolution of the data. A common solution to interpolating LST data is statistical interpolation methods, such as fitting polynomials or thin plate spine interpolation. These methods have difficulties in incorporating additional knowledge about the research area and learning local dependencies that can help with the interpolation process. We propose a novel approach to interpolating remote sensing LST data in a fixed research area considering local ground-site air temperature measurements. The two-step approach consists of learning the LST from air temperature measurements, where the ground-site weather stations are located, and interpolating the remaining missing values with partial convolutions within a U-Net deep learning architecture. Our approach improves the interpolation of LST for our research area by 44% in terms of RMSE, when compared to state-of-the-art statistical methods. Due to the use of air temperature, we can provide coverage of 100%, even when no valid LST measurements were available. The resulting gapless coverage of high resolution LST data will help unlock the full potential of remote sensing LST data.

Fiber-tip temperature sensing probe based on standard Brillouin optical correlation-domain reflectometry with sinusoidal modulation

We develop a simplified approach for localized temperature measurement at the fiber tip, utilizing the standard configuration of Brillouin optical correlation-domain reflectometry (BOCDR) with sinusoidal modulation of optical frequency. This method eliminates the need for specialized modifications to the sensing fiber, thereby enhancing cost-efficiency. Compared to the noise-modulated low-coherence BOCDR, our approach allows for a more precise evaluation of theoretical spatial resolution. We successfully attain a theoretical spatial resolution of 5.7 cm with this method.

Impact of Boundary Parameters Accuracy on Modeling of Directed Energy Deposition Thermal Field

Within the large Additive Manufacturing (AM) process family, Directed Energy Deposition (DED) can be used to create low-cost prototypes and coatings, or to repair cracks. In the case of M4 HSS (High Speed Steel), a reliable computed temperature field during DED process allows the optimization of the substrate preheating temperature value and other process parameters. Such optimization is required to avoid failure during the process, as well as high residual stresses. If 3D DED simulations provide accurate thermal fields, they also induce huge computation time, which motivates simplifications. This article uses a 2D Finite Element (FE) model that decreases the computation cost through dividing the CPU time by around 100 in our studied case, but it needs some calibrations. As described, the identification of a correct data set solely based on local temperature measurements can lead to various sets of parameters with variations of up to 100%. In this study, the melt pool depth was used as an additional experimental measurement to identify the input data set, and a sensitivity analysis was conducted to estimate the impact of each identified parameter on the cooling rate and the melt pool dimension.
