Structural, Electronic, and Magnetic Properties of Gd-Substituted Bi2Fe4O9 Multiferroic: A Combined Experimental and DFT Approach

Abstract We present the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of Gd3+ substituted Bi2Fe4O9 (BFO) via experimental analysis as well as density functional theory (DFT). Rietveld refined X-ray diffraction data shows phase purity of the samples having orthorhombic phase with space group: ‘Pbam’. Gd3+ ions substitution at Bi3+-site is confirmed by the shift in peaks ((002) and (220)) at higher 2θ angles as well as the reduction in lattice parameters. The PBE+U calculations predict a band gap of 1.76 eV (BFO) and 1.6 eV (Gd substituted BFO) which is in close agreement with the experimental values. This reduction in band gap due to Gd3+ substitution enhances conduction in substituted samples. The calculated density of states illustrates considerable hybridization between Fe-3d and O-2p states with substantial overlap among the Bi-6p and O-2p states. Incorporating Gd3+ ions further introduces additional exchange interactions between Gd-Fet and Gd-Feo, thus leading to enhanced magnetization as well as an increase in antiferromagnetic transition temperature (TN). This characteristic feature is supported by temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility (χ) and dχ/dT plots. Hence, our experimental and theoretical findings suggest that BFO and its substituted samples are potential multiferroic materials for various device applications.

Suppressing Energy Migration via Antiparallel Spin Alignment in One-Dimensional Mn2+ Halide Magnets with High Luminescence Efficiency.

Photoexcited energy migration is prone to causing luminescence quenching in Mn2+ luminescent materials, presenting a formidable challenge for optoelectronic applications. Although various strategies and mechanisms have been proposed to mitigate this issue, the role of spin alignment between adjacent Mn2+ ions has remained largely unexamined. In this study, we have elucidated the influence of spin alignment on energy migration within the one-dimensional Mn2+-metal halide compound (CH3)4NMnCl3 (TMMC) through variable-temperature photoluminescence (PL) and magnetic-optical spectroscopy. This investigation was conducted with reference to (CH6N3)2MnCl4 (GUA) with isolated [Mn3Cl12]6- trimers and Cd2+-doped TMMC. The spin order in TMMC below approximately 55 K is demonstrated by the disorder-order transition observed in the temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility. This finding is further corroborated by the negligible shift in the temperature- and field-dependent emission peaks, a consequence of magnetic saturation. Our results indicate that the antiparallel spin alignment along the Mn2+ chain in TMMC effectively suppresses energy migration and multiphonon relaxation, thereby reducing nonradiative transitions and enhancing the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY). This research casts new light on the potential for developing high-performance Mn2+-doped phosphors for optoelectronic and spin-photonic applications, offering insights into the manipulation of spin and energy dynamics in these materials.

Cluster spin glass behaviour of Co2+−Al3+ layered double hydroxides

Frequency-dependent magnetic behaviour of cobalt-aluminium layered double hydroxides (LDH) with the Co/Al ratio of 2 and 3, was studied between 2 and 300 K. It was found from analysis of the temperature-dependent ac magnetic susceptibility that these LDH exhibit a magnetic cluster spin glass behaviour regardless of their basal spacing value and the Co/Al ratio as evidenced by EA/kBT0 > 1 relation obtained using Vogel-Fulcher law. The obtained values of Mydosh parameters in the range of 0.017–0.052 suggest that some of these materials are not far from the canonical spin glasses, implying a rather small size of the magnetic clusters.

Magnetic Mineral Dissolution in Heqing Core Lacustrine Sediments and Its Paleoenvironment Significance

The magnetic parameters within lacustrine sediments serve as invaluable proxies for deciphering the paleoenvironmental and paleoclimatic conditions. However, the dissolution of magnetic minerals can significantly alter detrital magnetic mineral assemblages, thereby complicating their interpretation in paleoenvironmental reconstructions. In an effort to clarify the impact of this dissolution on the grain size of magnetic minerals in lacustrine sediments, we undertook a thorough analysis of the rock magnetic properties on samples from the interval characterized by low ARM (anhysteretic remanent magnetization)/SIRM (saturation isothermal remanent magnetization) values between 140 and 320 ka in the Heqing (HQ) lacustrine drill core, located in Southwest China. Temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility and FORC diagrams revealed a predominance of single-vortex and pseudo-single domain (PSD) magnetite and maghemite within the sample. When compared to samples from both the glacial and interglacial periods, the high SIRM, elevated magnetic susceptibility, and low ARM/SIRM ratio intervals from 140 to 320 ka suggested a high concentration of magnetic minerals coupled with a relatively low concentration of fine-grained particles in the sediments. The reductive dissolution of the fine-grained magnetic oxides is responsible for the reduction in the fine-grained magnetic particles in this interval. Our findings indicate that pedogenic fine-grained magnetite and maghemite are the first to dissolve, followed by the dissolution of coarser-grained iron oxides into finer particles. This process underscores the complex interplay between magnetic mineral dissolution and grain size distribution in lacustrine sediments, with significant implications for the reliability of paleoenvironmental interpretations derived from magnetic parameters.

Copper(II) complexes of hindered diazines: methylquinoxalines

Five new copper(II) complexes of substituted quinoxaline ligands have been prepared and characterized via single crystal X-ray diffraction, including [Cu(5-Mequinox)2(NO3)2] (2), [Cu(5-Mequinox)(NO3)(H2O)(μ-1,3-NO3)]n (3), the chloride salt (5-MequinoxH)2[Cu3Cl8] (4), the complex [Cu(6-Mequinox)2(NO3)2] (5) and [(2-carboxylato-3-methylquinox)(2-hydroxymethyl-3-methylquinox)nitratocopper(II)]. CH3CN (6) [quinox = quinoxaline; 5-Mequinox = 5-methylquinoxaline; 6-Mequinox = 6-methylquinoxaline]. None of the complexes produced diazine bridged chain structures (as seen in [(quinox)Cu(NO3)2]n (1)), although 3 forms chains via a bridging nitrate ion. Crystal packing is controlled primarily through hydrogen bonding and π-stacking of nitrate ions. The temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility data of the parent compound [(quinox)Cu(NO3)2]n are also reported and discussed.

Contrasting Magnetic Characteristics of Disordered Nd0.5Ba0.5Mn0.5Fe0.5O3-δ/2 and 112-Type Ordered NdBaMnFeO6-δ Perovskites.

The magnetic properties of disordered Nd0.5Ba0.5Mn0.5Fe0.5O3-δ/2 and ordered NdBaMnFeO6-δ perovskites were investigated through temperature- and field-dependent DC-magnetization measurements. The temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibilities revealed that antiferromagnetic ordering occurs at temperatures below 185 K for the disordered Nd0.5Ba0.5Mn0.5Fe0.5O3-δ/2 sample, whereas the ordered NdBaMnFeO6-δ perovskite exhibited a paramagnetic state throughout the entire temperature range examined. Notably, the disordered sample exhibited a glassy state, even at room temperature, which transformed into an antiferromagnetic state under higher applied magnetic fields. The magnetic ordering in the disordered Nd0.5Ba0.5Mn0.5Fe0.5O3-δ/2 perovskite and the magnetic-disordering state in the structurally ordered NdBaMnFeO6-δ perovskite could be attributed to the alteration of the oxidation state of Mn.

Regulating Fe-spin state by doping P heteroatom in Fe-N-C catalyst derived from colloidal nanoparticles encapsulated ZIF-8 to boost oxygen reduction activity

Over the past decades, Fe-N-C carbon materials have been considered as one of the most ideal alternatives to the noble metal catalysts (e.g. Pt/C) for the sluggish oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in zinc-air batteries and fuel cells. In this research, ZIF-8 cage encapsulation confinement strategy coupled with post P-doping has been employed to design porous P, N and Fe co-doped carbon (FeNC-P) for efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The zero-field cooling (ZFC) temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility measurement revealed that incorporation of P in the Fe-N-C catalysts can induce the transition of spin polarization configuration, which promotes the desorption of *OH in the crucial step of the ORR reaction process. The best-performing FeNC-P catalyst displays a 1.00 V (vs RHE) of Eonset (onset potential) and a 0.90 V (vs RHE) of E1/2 (half-wave potential) in an alkaline solution, which exceeds the benchmark Pt/C catalyst. Moreover, it also delivers a high power density of 130 mW·cm−2 in the self-made zinc-air battery, surpassing the benchmark Pt/C catalyst (90 mW·cm−2).

Magnetic Properties of Gd-Doped Bi7Fe3Ti3O21 Aurivillius-Type Ceramics.

The magnetic properties of Aurivillius-phase Bi7Fe3Ti3O21 (BFT) and Bi7-xGdxFe3Ti3O21, where x = 0.2, 0.4, and 0.6 (BGFT), were investigated. Ceramic material undoped (BGF) and doped with Gd3+ ions were prepared by conventional solid-state reaction. In order to confirm that the obtained materials belong to Aurivillius structures, XRD tests were performed. The XRD results confirmed that both the undoped and the gadolinium-doped materials belong to the Aurivillius phases. The qualitative chemical composition of the obtained materials was confirmed based on EDS tests. The temperature dependences of magnetization and magnetic susceptibility were examined for the ceramic material both undoped and doped with Gd3+ ions. The measurements were taken in the temperature range from T = 10 K to T = 300 K. Using Curie's law, the value of the Curie constant was determined, and on its basis, the number of iron ions that take part in magnetic processes was calculated. The value of Curie constant C = 0.266 K, while the concentration of iron ions Fe3+, which influence the magnetic properties of the material, is equal 3.7 mol% (for BFT). Hysteresis loop measurements were also performed at temperatures of T = 10 K, T = 77 K, and T = 300 K. The dependence of magnetization on the magnetic field was described by the Brillouin function, and on its basis, the concentration of Fe3+ ions, which are involved in magnetic properties, was also calculated (3.4 mol% for BFT). Tests showed that the material is characterized by magnetic properties at low temperatures. At room temperature (RT), it has paramagnetic properties. It was also found that Gd3+ ions improve the magnetic properties of tested material.

Synthesis, characterization, crystal structure, molecular dynamics simulations, MM-GBSA analysis, and bioactivity studies of pyrazine- and pyrimidine-modulated unsymmetrical dipyridylamide complexes

By using unsymmetrical pyrazine- and pyrimidine-modulated oligo-α-pyridylamine ligand N-(4-methylpyrimidin-2-yl)pyrazin-2-amine (Hmpmpza) (1), 1D copper(II) coordination polymer {[Cu(mpmpza)(CH3COO)](CH3OH)(H2O)}n (2) and mononuclear copper(II) complex [Cu(Hmpmpza)(NO3)2] (3) were first successfully synthesized and structurally characterized. In complex (2), Cu(II) is six-coordinated in an elongated octahedral geometry. The Hmpmpza molecule coordinates with the Cu(II) as a tridentate ligand, in which the pyrimidine and amine group nitrogen atoms link the coordination units to an infinite 1-D chain polymer. Extensive hydrogen bonds between amino groups, acetate anions, methanol, and water molecules are observed in 2, resulting in a 3D network of the 2. Complex 2 provides the first example of the complex with a modulated Hdpa ligand, in which nitrogen atoms both of the pyrazine and pyrimidine cycles participated in the coordination with the metal center. There are two crystallographically independent molecules in a mononuclear complex 3 and the Cu(II) atom is six-coordinated in an elongated octahedral geometry. Hmpmpza in complex 3 coordinates to the Cu(II) in an anti-anti conformation as a bidentate ligand. The hydrogen bonds between amino groups and coordinated nitrate anions in complex 3, link its molecules to a 1-D chain structure. However, no hydrogen bonding linkage between the 1-D chains is observed. The temperature dependence magnetic susceptibility measurement for complex 2 described by the Bonner-Fischer approximation shows a weak antiferromagnetic coupling between Cu(II) ions. The best fitting results were obtained with parameters g = 2.141, J = −0.73 cm−1 and R = 4.85 × 10−6. The molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of the 2-hAChE, 3-hAChE, 2-hBChE, and 3-hBChE complexes offer comprehensive insights into the stability and dynamic behavior of ligand-protein interactions. These findings contribute to a detailed understanding of the specific dynamics governing the stability of acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase complexes.

A Self‐Assembly of New Cobalt Coordinating Polymer Based on Fluorinated Secondary Building Unit and Pyrazine

AbstractThe direct two‐step synthesis of new coordination polymer [Co2(pyz)(tfa)2(dmf)6(H2O)][Co3(μ3‐F)(tfa)6(pyz)(dmf)]2 ⋅ 2dmf, (where pyz=pyrazine, Htfa=trifluoroacetic acid, dmf=dimethyl formamide) containing the fluoro‐centered secondary building block [Co3(μ3‐F)(tfa)6], is reported. The substance characterization using single‐crystal XRD, powder XRD, IR‐spectroscopy and thermogravimetry was performed. SCXRD data revealed the presence of cationic and anionic subsystems, both containing cobalt(II) ions and pyrazine bridging ligands. The magnetic proper‐ties of the compound were collected and discussed. Temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility shows Curie–Weiss like behavior at all studied temperatures.

Cu(II)-Ln(III) (Ln = Gd, Tb and Dy) complexes of an unsymmetrical N2O3 donor ligand: field induced SMM behaviour of Cu(II)-Tb(III) complexes.

Three new hetero-metallic CuII-LnIII complexes [(CuL)Gd(NO3)3(CH3OH)]n (1), [(CuL)Tb(NO3)3(H2O)]·[CuL] (2) and [(CuL)Dy(NO3)3(H2O)]·[CuL] (3) have been synthesized using a mono-nuclear Cu(II) complex, [CuL], of an unsymmetrically di-condensed N2O3 donor Schiff base ligand, N-(3-methoxysalicylidene)-N-(salicylidene)-1,2-ethylenediamine (H2L). Single crystal X-ray crystallography revealed that complex 1 is a nitrate bridged 1D chain of dinuclear Cu(II)-Gd(III) units whereas in 2 and 3, the dinuclear Cu(II)-Ln(III) units are co-crystallized with a [CuL] unit. The Ln(III) centers are nine coordinated with the geometry of a spherical capped square antiprism for Gd and spherical tricapped trigonal prism for Tb and Dy. The geometry of the Cu(II) center is distorted octahedral for complex 1 and distorted square planar for complexes 2 and 3. Temperature-dependent molar magnetic susceptibility measurements in 1-3 revealed the presence of overall ferromagnetic coupling between the Cu(II) and Ln(III) centers. Notably, field induced single-molecule magnet behavior was witnessed in the Tb(III) derivative (2). The ab initio calculations indicated that upon application of an external magnetic field, the tunneling in the ground state of complex 2 gets reduced and thereby field-induced SMM behaviour is observed. Besides, in the case of complex 1, BS-DFT calculations were carried out to gain further insights into the magnetic exchange coupling interactions between the Cu(II) and Gd(III) centers.

Antiferromagnetic resorcinol bridged dinuclear square-planar copper (II) complexes: Syntheses, structural, spectroscopic and magnetic properties

A new C2-symmetric Schiff base ligand (H2L) featuring a core resorcinol bridging unit has been created, utilizing the Duff formylation reaction followed by the Schiff base condensation reaction. The ligand was characterized by various spectroscopic techniques. Cu(II) salts with varying coordinating anions (Cl− and SCN−) in methanol were allowed to react with this ligand in a 2:1 M ratio to create dinuclear Cu(II) complexes. The complexes were isolated in pure form and characterized by, elemental analysis,single crystal X-ray crystallography and various spectroscopic techniques. X-ray analysis discloses that both complexes are dinuclear, where the ligand (H2L) being tridentate in nature, coordinates to Cu(II) through its two N donor atoms and one O donor atom in the equatorial positions. The respective anions (−Cl− for 1 and –SCN− for 2) coordinate to Cu(II) to complete its square planar geometry. Temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate weak antiferromagnetic exchange interactions with a coupling constant of J = −5.9(1) cm−1 and g = 2.148(1) for 1 and J = −10.08(1) cm−1 and g = 2.106(1) for 2.

Mixed convection by buoyancy and magnetothermal forces

The magnetic force in the paramagnetic fluid depends on the local gradient of magnetic flux density and the temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility. In the presence of the gravity, the buoyant force due to the temperature difference additionally overlaps, and the resultant flow becomes a mixed convection. In this study, the effect of the temperature-dependent magnetic force (magnetothermal force) on the natural convection was numerically investigated. The magnetic field formed by the permanent-magnet array was employed and effective one was discussed in terms of the heat transfer. A three-dimensional Rayleigh-Benard convection simulation was conducted with the magnet array below the bottom hot wall. It was found that the magnetothermal force enhances the convection not only where the magnet locates but also away from the magnet due to the force profile.

Griffiths phase like behaviour in CoCrVZ (Z = Al, Ga) Heusler alloys

We report here the studies of structural and magnetic properties of two equiatomic quaternary Heusler alloys CoCrVZ (Z = Al, Ga). Both the alloys crystallize in LiMgPdSn type crystal structure (space group #216) with B2 (CoCrVAl) and A2 (CoCrVGa) type anti-site disorder between elemental sites. Intended stoichiometry was confirmed from the compositional analysis. The temperature dependence of dc magnetic susceptibility and the low temperature moment values show a nearly compensating ferrimagnetic behaviour at low temperatures for both the alloys. The inverse of dc magnetic susceptibility starts to deviate from the Curie–Weiss law below 220 K and 164 K for the alloys containing Al and Ga respectively. The Arrott plots confirms the absence of long range order down to 2 K. Further analysis of the dc and ac susceptibility shows that the observed behaviour is due to the presence of Griffiths like phase in these alloys.

Novel Trinuclear Copper(II) Complex: Crystal Structure at 100 K and Magnetic Properties of (R, S)-di[(6,7-dimethoxy-isoquinolin-1-yl)-(3,4-dimethoxy-phenyl)-methanolato]-tetra(2-hydroxybenzoato)-diaqua-tricopper dihydrate, [Cu3(C7H5O3)4(C20H20NO5)2(H2O)2]·2(H2O)

The crystal structure of [Cu3(C7H5O3)4(C20H20NO5)2(H2O)2]·2(H2O) (1) and analysis of temperature and field dependence of magnetic susceptibility is reported in this work. The structure of 1 is composed of trinuclear complex units and water molecules. The middle copper atom occupies the center of symmetry. N, O-bonded (6,7-dimethoxy-isoquinolin-1-yl)-(3,4-di­methoxy-phenyl)-methanolato ligands, 2-hydroxybenzoates with bridging carboxylic groups, and oxo-bridged water molecules connect the middle Cu(II) atom with the terminal copper atoms. Two 2-hydroxybenzoates coordinate the terminal copper atoms via one carboxylic oxygen and an O atom of the hydroxyl group. The analysis of copper coordination by bond-valence sum approach and relevant structural correlation is consistent with hexacoordinated Cu(II) centers. Cu···Cu separation is 3.0269(3) Å. The magnetism of 1 shows a strong ferromagnetic interaction between the neighboring metallic centers accompanied by very weak antiferromagnetic intermolecular interactions. The complex units are mutually held by π···π stack interactions of 2-hydroxybenzoates and hydrogen bonds.Graphical A new N,O bonded ligands, (R, S)-[(6,7-dimethoxy-isoquinolin-1-yl)-(3,4-dimethoxy-phenyl)-methanolate] coordinate the terminal atoms of the trinuclear copper(II) complex.

The crystal structures and magnetic properties of YbMg0.75In1.25 and Yb6Mg6.41In5.59

Abstract The quasi-binary system YbMg2-YbIn2 was studied around the equiatomic composition. In contrast to the ordered rare earth (RE) phases REMgIn (ZrNiAl type), ytterbium forms phases with different structures and pronounced Mg/In mixing (M sites). The structures of YbMg0.75In1.25 (CaLiSn type, P3m1, a = 501.95(7), c = 1087.3(2) pm, wR2 = 0.0490, 790 F 2 values, 32 variables) and Yb6Mg6.41In5.59 (Yb6Ir5Ga7 type, P63/mcm, a = 1060.77(14), c = 970.27(16) pm, wR2 = 0.0484, 701 F 2 values, 26 variables) were refined from single-crystal X-ray diffractometer data. YbMg0.75In1.25 is an AlB2 superstructure with a tripling of the subcell. The magnesium and indium atoms form three differently puckered layers of M 6 hexagons. The Yb6Mg6.41In5.59 structure is derived from the hexagonal Laves phase YbMg2 (MgZn2 type, P63/mmc). A klassengleiche symmetry reduction leads to four crystallographically independent M sites for the rows of corner- and face-sharing tetrahedra which allow a composition close to the equiatomic one. The M–M distances in both structures cover the broad range from 289 to 331 pm, comparable to the sums of the covalent radii. Temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility studies of the polycrystalline YbMg0.75In1.25 and Yb12Mg13In11 samples indicate Pauli paramagnetism with room temperature values of 2.8(1) × 10−3 emu mol−1 (YbMg0.75In1.25) and 5.2(1) × 10−3 emu mol−1 (Yb12Mg13In11).

Pressure Dependence of the Structural and Superconducting Properties of the Bi-Based Superconductor Bi2Pd3Se2.

The structural and superconducting properties of the Bi-based compound Bi2Pd3Se2 were investigated over a wide pressure range. The prepared Bi2Pd3Se2 sample was a superconductor with a superconducting transition temperature, Tc, of approximately 3.0 K, which differed from a previous report (Tc of less than 1.0 K). At ambient pressure, the powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern of the Bi2Pd3Se2 sample was consistent with that previously reported for Bi2Pd3Se2. The Rietveld method was used to refine the crystal structure, which had a space group of C2/m (No. 12), as reported previously. This compound showed no clear anomaly due to the charge-density-wave (CDW) transition, as seen from the temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility. However, the temperature dependence of electrical resistivity indicated a clear anomaly, presumably because of the CDW transition in the low-pressure range; the CDW transition temperature was approximately 230 K. The XRD patterns of the Bi2Pd3Se2 sample were measured at 0.160-22.7 GPa, and the patterns were well analyzed by both the Le Bail and Rietveld refinement methods, showing no structural phase transitions in the above pressure range. The pressure dependence of Tc of Bi2Pd3Se2 was recorded based on the temperature dependence of the electrical resistance, which showed an almost constant Tc at 0-13.7 GPa, and the Tc-pressure (p) behavior was fully discussed.

A theoretical study of Lifshitz transition for 2H-TaS2.

Lifshitz transition was proposed to explain a change of the topology structure in a Fermi surface induced by continuous lattice deformation without symmetry breaking since 1960. It is well known that the anomalies of the kinetic coefficients (the coefficient of heat conduction and electrical conductivity, viscosity, sound absorption, etc.) are usually closely connected with the Lifshitz transition behavior. 2H-TaS2 is a typical representative to study its anomalies of temperature dependence of heat capacity, resistivity, Hall effect, and magnetic susceptibility. Its geometrical structure of the charge density wave (CDW) phase and layer number dependence of carrier-sign alternation upon cooling in the Hall measurements have not been well understood. The geometrical structure (T-Ts) of the CDW phase was predicted through first principles calculations for bulk and mono-layer 2H-TaS2. Driven by electron-lattice coupling, Ta atoms contract to form a partially gapped CDW phase. The CDW phase has a larger average interlayer separation of S-S atoms in the adjacent two layers compared with the metal phase, which results in a weaker chemical bonding among S-S atoms in the adjacent two layers and then a narrower bandwidth of the energy band. The narrower bandwidth of the energy band leads to a larger density of states (DOS) in the out-of-plane direction above the Fermi level for the CDW phase. As the Fermi level continually drops from the DOS region with a negative slope to that with a positive slope on cooling, the reversal of the p → n type carrier and the pocket-vanishing-type Lifshitz transition occur in the bulk 2H-TaS2. However, the Fermi level slightly drops by 6 meV and happens to be at the positions of pseudo band gaps, so the reduction of in-plane DOS and total DOS is responsible for the always p-type carrier in the mono-layer samples. Our CDW vector of the k-space separation between two saddle points is QSP ≈ 0.62 GK and can provide a theoretical support for the "saddle-point" CDW mechanism proposed by Rice and Scott. Our theoretical explanation gives a new understanding of both Lifshitz transition for symmetry breaking and reversal for the p-n carrier sign in the Hall measurements in various two-dimensional transition metal disulfides.

Halide mediated modulation of magnetic interaction and anisotropy in dimeric Co(II) complexes.

The burgeoning interest in the field of molecular magnetism is to perceive the high magnetic anisotropy in different geometries of metal complexes and hence to draw a magneto-structural correlation. Despite a handful of examples to exemplify the magnetic anisotropy in various coordination geometries of mononuclear complexes, the magnetic anisotropies for two different coordination geometries are underexplored. Employing an appropriate synthetic strategy utilizing the ligand LH2 [2,2'-{(1E,1'E)-pyridine2,6-diyl-bis(methaneylylidine)}-bis(azaneylylidine)diphenol] and cobalt halide salts in a 1 : 2 stoichiometric ratio in the presence of triethylamine allowed us to report a new family of dinuclear cobalt complexes [CoII2X2(L)(P)(Q)]·S with varying terminal halides [X = Cl, P = CH3CN, Q = H2O, S = H2O (1), X = Br, P = CH3CN, Q = H2O, S = H2O (2), X = I, P = CH3CN, and Q = CH3CN (3)]. All these complexes are characterized through single crystal X-ray crystallography, which reveals their crystallization in the monoclinic system P21/n space group with nearly identical structural features. These complexes share vital components, including Co(II) centers, a fully deprotonated ligand [L]2-, halide ions, and solvent molecules. The [L]2- ligand contains two Co(II) centers, where phenolate oxygen atoms bridge the Co(II) centers, forming a Co2O2 four-membered ring. Co1 demonstrates a distorted pentagonal-bipyramidal geometry with axial positions for solvent molecules, while Co2 displays a distorted tetrahedral geometry involving phenolate oxygen atoms and halide ions. Temperature-dependent dc magnetic susceptibility measurements were conducted on 1-3 within a range of 2 to 300 K at 1 kOe. The χmT vs. T plots exhibit similar trends, with χmT values at 300 K higher than the spin-only value, signifying a significant orbital contribution. As the temperature decreases, χmT decreases smoothly in all the complexes; however, no clear saturation at low temperatures is observed. Field-dependent magnetization measurements indicate a rapid increase below 20 kOe, with no hysteresis and a low magnetic blocking temperature. DFT and CASSCF/NEVPT2 theoretical calculations were performed to perceive the magnetic interaction and single-ion anisotropies of Co(II) ions in various ligand-field environments.

Coupled-cluster treatment of complex open-shell systems: the case of single-molecule magnets.

We investigate the reliability of two cost-effective coupled-cluster methods for computing spin-state energetics and spin-related properties of a set of open-shell transition-metal complexes. Specifically, we employ the second-order approximate coupled-cluster singles and doubles (CC2) method and projection-based embedding that combines equation-of-motion coupled-cluster singles and doubles (EOM-CCSD) with density functional theory (DFT). The performance of CC2 and EOM-CCSD-in-DFT is assessed against EOM-CCSD. The chosen test set includes two hexaaqua transition-metal complexes containing Fe(II) and Fe(III), and a large Co(II)-based single-molecule magnet with a non-aufbau ground state. We find that CC2 describes the excited states more accurately, reproducing EOM-CCSD excitation energies within 0.05 eV. However, EOM-CCSD-in-DFT excels in describing transition orbital angular momenta and spin-orbit couplings. Moreover, for the Co(II) molecular magnet, using EOM-CCSD-in-DFT eigenstates and spin-orbit couplings, we compute spin-reversal energy barriers, as well as temperature-dependent and field-dependent magnetizations and magnetic susceptibilities that closely match experimental values within spectroscopic accuracy. These results underscore the efficiency of CC2 in computing state energies of multi-configurational, open-shell systems and highlight the utility of the more cost-efficient EOM-CCSD-in-DFT for computing spin-orbit couplings and magnetic properties of complex and large molecular magnets.
