Students’ Perception on The Use of TED Talks to Improve Listening Skills

Enhancing listening skills is crucial for junior high school students learning English. Innovative teaching tools such as TED Talks offer an interactive platform that might aid this educational goal. This research aims to evaluate the effect of TED Talks on developing listening skills among junior high school learners. The study employed a mixed-methods design involving 34 junior high school students. Participants underwent pre-and post-test assessments to measure their listening skills. Additionally, interviews were conducted to delve deeper into the students' experiences and perspectives regarding using TED Talks in their learning process. The findings revealed that TED Talks significantly enhanced students' English listening skills. After engaging with TED Talks videos, students showed notable improvements in vocabulary acquisition, pronunciation accuracy, and listening comprehension. The high-quality audio and diverse content of TED Talks were credited for these improvements. Furthermore, interviews provided insights into the positive impact of TED Talks on student motivation and engagement, with students expressing increased satisfaction and perceived efficacy in the classroom. TED Talks also contributed to the acquisition of advanced vocabulary and sharpened students' critical thinking skills through exposure to various topics.

USING TED TALKS IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING

The results of a quantitative investigation on how incorporating TED Talks media into language training affects students' speaking abilities are presented in this article. The purpose of the study was to evaluate how well students' verbal expression and communication skills may be improved by using TED Talks videos as a resource. After incorporating TED Talks, students' speaking abilities significantly improved, according to an examination of pre- and post-test results. The integration of genuine and captivating information from TED Talks introduced students to a diverse range of subjects, accomplished presenters, and everyday language usage, resulting in improved pronunciation, vocabulary, and fluency. These findings highlight the TED Talks' potential as a useful educational resource for enhancing students' speaking abilities during language training. It is highly recommended that language instructors use TED Talks into their instructional strategies to establish engaging and interactive learning environments that promote language proficiency and proficient communication. The study adds to the body of knowledge already available on the use of multimedia materials in language instruction and provides teachers looking for creative ways to improve their students' speaking skills with useful advice.

Using TED Talks to Improve Motivation of Learning English Language Skills among Middle School Students with Learning Disabilities

This study aimed to use TED Talks, which are abundant with real-life examples of English language use, that might improve the public speaking skills of elementary-level Jordanian EFL students with learning disabilities. The study also aimed at identifying the attitudes of the students with learning disabilities toward using TED Talks to increase motivation to learn English. This research used a quasi-experimental approach. The present study included 68 female EFL tenth graders from the Irbid Schools for Girls, a public institution under the Irbid Directorate of Education. The researcher created an educational program based on the TED talks. The pre-post-test was used to measure the students’ progress and a questionnaire was used to measure their attitudes to this strategy. The program seems to have created good levels of interaction among the students and boosted their appetite to participate and engage with the visual and audio materials presented in the TED Talks videos. The students showed positive attitudes toward using the TED Talks program to raise their motivation to learn English language.

TED Talks Video As Efl’s Public Speaking Learning Source

The subject of public speaking is fascinating and crucial since it helps students develop their communication abilities. A qualitative approach was used to acquire the data. Finding out how students feel about using TED Talks as a public speaking practice is the aim of this study. There were twenty respondents who were sixth semester English education majors in this study's sample. A questionnaire was used as the research tool. Item 8, which stated, "Watching TED Talks videos improves my comprehension of the lesson content in public speaking," received the highest score.19 students (95%) selected "agree," while 1 student (5%) selected "strongly agree." Item 5, which had the lowest result, had the following statements: "Watching TED Talks videos to learn public speaking is more effective than looking at a teacher's note." Of the students who responded, 3 (15%) strongly agreed, 11 (55%) agreed, and 6 (30%) disagreed. As the study's findings demonstrated, using TED Talk as a teaching tool for public speaking was a smart idea. Additionally, students thought that watching the TED Talk video improved their public speaking skills.

Digital videos in the English as a Second Language classroom

This study aimed at investigating the use of digital videos for L2 development, with the specific objectives of identifying the: 1) frequency of use and the sources of the videos, 2) selection criteria and instructional use, and 3) perception of their benefits. Data were collected by means of a questionnaire with thirteen English teachers from extracurricular courses offered at the Federal University of Santa Catarina. The results showed that 8 teachers reported using videos about 20% of their classes; 1, 40%; 1, 60%; and 3, 80%. Most teachers use videos from YouTube, TED talk videos, DVDs in general, and videos accompanying the textbooks. For the selection criteria, teachers use: video length, authenticity, difficulty level, topic adequacy in relation to the topic in class, grammar and vocabulary presentation in context; and for the instructional use, videos are used mostly to teach vocabulary and grammar, introduce and explain the topics related to the unit, contextualize the language and foster topic discussions, show diversity of language with abstract/poetic language, promote skills development, and prepare for activities. The perceived benefits include contextualization and authentic use of the language, language use in its natural pace, topic introduction and explanation assistance, attractiveness and engagement, delivery of visual input, and use of subtitles. The possible conclusions are that digital videos are present and can contribute for L2 development, and that teachers are capitalizing on their best use in their L2 classrooms.

Utilizing a quasi-experimental design with control and experimental groups, the study combined quantitative analysis of pre-tests and post-tests with qualitative insights gathered from a Likert questionnaire. The outcomes strongly indicated that students exposed to TED Talks videos exhibit significant advancements in their as indicated by the significant mean value of post-test scores between the experimental and control groups. Additionally, the research highlights the pivotal role of authentic materials in enhancing motivation and fostering positive learning attitudes. This research also delved into the wider implications of these findings for language instruction, underscoring the potential of multimedia resources to revolutionize conventional teaching methodologies. Beyond the classroom, the research envisions an education landscape where innovative techniques, such as the incorporation of TED Talks videos, reshape language teaching. By addressing pedagogical and motivational facets, the study advocates for contemporary resources to create engaging and effective learning experiences. The research encourages educators to explore how multimedia interacts with diverse learners and cultural contexts, ultimately promoting dynamic instructional approaches aligned with evolving educational needs.

TED Talks Video: A Technology to Teach Listening Skills

In the development of ICT, TED Talks Video as an authentic video can be used in listening classrooms. The use of real videos in listening comprehension lessons, like TED Talks, may enhance listening in English. Consequently, the study's goal was to determine whether or not students who were taught using the TED Talks Video application and those who were not had significantly different listening skills. It employed a quasi-experimental design. The eleventh graders at SMA Negeri 1 Pampangan participated in this study. The sample was selected by using a purposive sampling technique. The cloze test was used to obtain the data. A T-test was used to analyze the data. Based on the results of the independent sample t-test, the independent sample t-test result showed that the t-test obtained (2.825) was higher than the t-table (2.00) and ρ-value (0.000) was smaller than the α-value (0.05). It was shown that students who were taught using the TED Talks Video application had significantly better listening skills than those who were not. In conclusion, the TED Talks Video could be used to solve students' problems in listening skills. The TED Talks Videos can be used by English teachers as authentic listening materials and teaching aids.

Effect of TED Talks videos on the effectiveness of teaching English monologue speech to management students

At present, a key role in teaching English is played using TED Talks video materials. They provide ample opportunities to develop and improve students' speech skills and ability to understand English in an engaging and informative way. The study aims to assess the impact of using contemporary media content from TED Talks on improving the effectiveness of training management students in English-language monologue speaking. The presented experimental results confirm the efficiency of teaching English-language monologue speech to university students with the use of the Ted Talks video hosting platform.

These results underscore the potential of integrating TED Talks as an effective pedagogical tool for promoting students' speaking skills in language instruction. Language educators are encouraged to incorporate TED Talks into their teaching practices to create dynamic and interactive learning experiences that foster linguistic development and effective communication. The study contributes to the existing body of research on the use of multimedia resources in language education and offers practical insights for educators seeking innovative approaches to enhance students' speaking abilities.

SOSIALISASI PENGGUNAAN TED TALK VIDEO DALAM MENGEMBANGKAN KEMAMPUAN SPEAKING

The purpose of this community service is to develop the Speaking skills of the second class of the students of SMK Negeri 3 Gunungsari Lombok Barat through the use of TED Talk Videos. Listening to TED Talks Video can provide an overview of content structure, make content understanding more optimal, also facilitate the teaching and learning process in more depth, and make learning more stimulating because it applies new models in learning. Through the TED Talk Video, we can learn about the ability to speak effectively in public and learn how intonation, body movements, eye contact, and control awareness without anxiety, can boost students' self-confidence. Conduct socialization and education regarding efforts to develop speaking skills by using TED Talks Videos as a solution that can be used to overcome the English-Speaking Skill constraints of students at the[i] second class of SMK Negeri 3 Gunungsari Lombok Barat.

THE USE OF TED TALKS VIDEOS AS LEARNING MATERIALS IN AN INTERMEDIATE LISTENING CLASS IN A PRIVATE UNIVERSITY IN YOGYAKARTA

Listening has a crucial role in developing communication skills in English as Foreign Language (EFL) context. Facilitating EFL listening activities can be conducted by using various resources such as online video providers, interactive websites, and web-based podcasts.TED Talk is one of the online video series that can be used for undergraduate students to develop their listening comprehension in learning EFL. This study aimed to investigate the use of TED Talk videos in developing EFL listening comprehension and the benefits of listening to TED Talk videos. The study was conducted in an Intermediate Listening Class at a Private University in Yogyakarta. The research subjects were 27 students. The researchers collected data by distributing questionnaires and conducting in-depth interviews with the students. Purpose sampling was employed to result in 3 students. Four students with the highest and lowest results were chosen to be examined thoroughly. The result showed that TED Talk videos helped to develop EFL listening comprehension even though not significant. Listening to TED Talk videos can also motivate undergraduate students to learn English, and can enrich the students’ general knowledge.

THE EFFECTS OF TED TALK VIDEOS ON EFL SPEAKING PERFORMANCE

Abstract: This study aims to describe the effect of TED Talk videos on speaking performance and to reveal the students’ perceptions toward the use of TED Talk in EFL speaking class. This study employed a quasi-experimental design with seventy-two secondary school students in Indonesia. The data were collected through tests and closed-ended questionnaires. The result of this research showed that after the treatment, there was a different speaking performance between students taught using TED Talk video and those without using TED Talk video. It was found that the mean of post-test in the experimental group was 75.17; meanwhile, the mean of post-test in the control group was 72.94. The result of the t-test analysis showed that the Sig. (2-tailed) value was lower than 0.05 (0.032<0.05). The questionnaire results revealed that students had good perceptions toward the use of TED Talk videos in learning speaking. Woman’s Language Features Used in Ted Talks

The aim of this research was to find out how the woman's language features used in Ted Talks videos and the language functions used by the woman speakers in Ted Talks. This research is descriptive. This is a descriptive study. The researcher obtained the data by downloading and writing the transcripts of Ted Talks videos. The researcher recognized the sorts of woman's language features utilized by women speakers in TED talk videos to examine the data. The study then determined the language function of all types of female language characteristics utilized by female speakers in TED talks videos. The researcher discovered that women speakers in Ted Talks employed seven sorts of female language features, such as lexical hedges or fillers, tag questions, rising intonation on declaratives, empty adjectives, intensifiers, hypercorrect grammar, and super polite forms, as the study's final conclusion. The researchers also discovered the language functions employed by women speakers in Ted Talk, such as directive, expressive, referential, metalinguistic, and phatic. However, the researcher found no language features or functions exclusive to women that were not employed by women speakers in Ted Talks, such as exact color descriptors, avoidance of harsh swear words, and emphatic stress. The poetic function is a language function that women speakers in Ted Talks do not employ.

THE EFFECTIVENESS OF «TED TALKS» VIDEO MATERIALS IN TEACHING ENGLISH AT A MEDICAL UNIVERSITY

The article examines the methodological potential of video materials from the TED Talks resource (Technology Entertainment Design) in the context of teaching English for Professional Purposes and Academic English at medical higher education institutions. The TED Talks video materials cover not only topical issues of natural sciences but also modern problems of education, culture, history, business, sustainable development, etc., therefore, they can contribute to the development of both hard and soft skills of undergraduate and Ph.D. students majoring in Health Care and Biology. Short TED talks delivered by experts from various spheres can be used to develop public speaking skills, analytical listening, rhetorical text analysis, etc. The paper presents several linguodidactic mechanisms aimed at the development, practice, and systematization of the above skills to optimize students’ mastering of grammatical constructions and lexical material. The methodological algorithm is represented by receptive, reproductive, and productive types of exercises and can be used to improve communicative competence and English language proficiency, to organize the classroom and extracurricular activities, as well as a distance learning mode. The research may be of interest to teachers of English at medical universities, as well as specialists from other fields, in the process of planning training sessions and developing educational and methodological materials.

Explaining science to the non-specialist online audience: A multimodal genre analysis of TED talk videos

Digital technologies have impacted scientific communication by facilitating developments in forms of expression for scientific genres and contributing to a diversified audience. Recently, a range of digital scientific genres that target not only specialists but also the non-specialist audience have emerged, requiring authors to recontextualize scientific knowledge effectively to meet the needs of a wider audience. One such genre is the TED talk video where scientists deliver speeches to audiences with diverse backgrounds. For such a digital-multimodal genre, language becomes just one element of the assemblage of multimodal semiotic resources that are exploited to explain science, and other semiotic resources are drawn upon in text construction. The present study explores how scientific knolwedge is explained to the non-specialist online audience through the use of generic and multimodal resources in TED talk videos. Adopting theoretical and analytical toolkits from the ESP framework of genre analysis and multimodal analysis, the study investigated twenty-eight TED talk videos on biology created from 2003 to 2018, interviews with insider informants, and community texts that explain the genre. Genre analysis of TED talks reveals that one communicative purpose of TED talks is to explain knowledge to a broad audience and that a rhetorical move named Developing the topic is adopted to achieve this purpose. Multimodal analysis reveals three types of visuals used to realize the move: figurative, graphical, and scriptural. Two types of visual-verbal configurations are also found: concurrence and complementarity. The findings show that visuals are significantly foregrounded when explaining science in TED talk videos. The study suggests that the TED talk video, a web-mediated genre originating from live TED talks, has developed the characteristics associated with the digital form.

Использование контента TED Talks для развития иноязычной аудитивной компетенции студентов технического вуза

The aim of the study is to substantiate the effectiveness of using the media content of the TED Talks platform for foreign language auditive competence development among technical university students within the “Foreign Language in Professional Activities” discipline. The paper clarifies the definition of the notion of technical university students’ foreign language auditive competence, its component composition, describes the possibilities of using TED Talks videos for its development. Scientific novelty lies in elaborating a model for foreign language auditive competence development among future engineers based on TED Talks videos. As a result, the positive results of a methodological experiment on the implementation of the considered model have been presented and the conditions for its functioning have been indicated.

STUDENTS’ PERCEPTION OF THE USE OF TED TALK VIDEOS IN PUBLIC SPEAKING CLASSS

TED Talk videos contain speakers discussing the latest thinking about education, learning, innovation, etc. The videos are made as learning media in a public speaking class. This research investigates students’ perceptions of the use of TED Talks video in public speaking class. There were tirty five students contributing as participants of this research. To gain the research data, the researcher used three research instruments: questionnaire, students and lecturer interviews. According to the data analysis, it was found that both the students and lecturer in public speaking have similar perceptions of the use of TED Talk videos. It can be inferred that the use of TED Talk videos can enhance the students’ speaking performance and give new information to them. It is recommended that EFL classes can use TED Talk videos as authentic learning media.
