Effects of e-learning technologies on university librarians and libraries: a systematic literature review

PurposeThe purpose of this study was to identify the effects of emerging technologies in e-learning on university librarians and libraries. The study also intended to identify emerging technologies in e-learning and challenges being faced to implement e-learning technologies.Design/methodology/approachThe preferred reporting items for the systematic review and meta-analysis method was applied as the research methodology for conducting the study. A total of 25 core studies published in peer-reviewed journals were selected to conduct a systematic literature review. The data were analysed through a thematic approach.FindingsThe results of the study revealed that e-learning technologies assist library professionals to strengthen their expertise and support them in initiating smart library services to deliver customer-focused services. A shortage of skilled manpower, the unavailability of adequate IT infrastructure, a lack of technical support, copyright issues, poor planning and ineffective library leadership are major challenges to implementing emerging technologies in e-learning.Originality/valueThe study offers theoretical implications by adding valuable literature to the existing body of knowledge. It has a societal impact as it has offered recommendations and practical solutions for the successful adoption of emerging technologies in e-learning. The study also offers managerial implications to develop fruitful policies for implementing e-learning technologies for the innovative sustainable competence development of library manpower and implementation of smart library services.

Advancing, empowering, and reshaping Saudi society through integrating e-learning technology into higher education

This research endeavors to propel, empower, and transform Saudi society through the strategic integration of technology-led e-learning within the higher educational institutions of the Kingdom. With the imminent future of learning heavily reliant on technology, the potential for ubiquitous and on-demand knowledge acquisition is set to revolutionize education in the upcoming decades. Our findings underscore the profound influence of technology-led learning on higher education in Saudi Arabia, establishing its pivotal role in driving societal progress. Central to our investigation is an in-depth exploration of diverse e-learning technologies and their profound implications on advancement and empowerment, ultimately instigating a substantial metamorphosis in the fabric of Saudi society. By affording individuals access to a tailored technology-led e-learning platform, the study envisages a profound restructuring of the populace, fostering a skilled and adaptive citizenry. A notable aspect of our research is the discernment of the government's instrumental role as a mediator in facilitating the adoption and implementation of technology-led e-learning, particularly in segments of society where access to these resources remains limited or absent. This mediation bears relevance in the context of the nation's vision for 2030 and forms a cornerstone of our contributions to inform the Ministry of Education and the Kingdom at large about the prospects of embracing a technology-led e-learning system. Moreover, our study delves into the scope and limitations surrounding the implementation of technology-led e-learning within higher education, effectively charting a course for societal transformation by invigorating the higher education system with innovative pedagogy. In conclusion, our research expands the horizons for Saudi learners and educational institutions alike, creating pathways for connectivity, talent acquisition, and representation on the global stage through the medium of advancing technology-led e-learning in higher education within the Kingdom.

Learning Development Strategies Using Internet E-Learning Technology in Increasing the Learning Creativity of Class XII IPS Class Students of Senior High School Cendrawasih Makassar

This type of research is Classroom Action Research (PTK), which aims to increase student learning creativity in social studies class XII at Cendrawasih Makassar High School through Internet E-learning Technology with Learning Development Strategies. The subjects of this study were class XII students of SMA Cendrawasih Makassar in the odd semester of the 2022/2023 school year with a total of 25 students consisting of 14 male students and 11 female students. This research was conducted in two cycles, and each process was held in 3 meetings including a test at the end of the cycle. Data collection techniques use observation, questionnaires, and tests at the end of each cycle, and the data collected consists of quantitative and qualitative data. Based on the results of data analysis, it was obtained that the average score of student learning outcomes before the cycle was 63 percent in the low category, after the first cycle it became 74.92 percent in the medium category, then in the second cycle it increased to 86.72 percent which was in the very high category. By looking at the increased results obtained before process and after cycle I and cycle II, it can be concluded that learning development strategies with internet e-learning technology can increase the learning creativity of class XII social studies students at SMA Cendrawasih.

Knowledge, Perceptions and Attitudes of eHealth and Health Technology among Nursing Students from Gauteng Province, South Africa.

The use of technology in healthcare settings was identified as a crucial priority in many countries to provide quality healthcare services. eHealth or digital health technology is found to have a positive influence on improving the efficiency and quality of healthcare services. It has been proven to provide opportunities to strengthen health systems. This study aims to assess eHealth literacy, pre-existing knowledge and the nursing students' perceptions and attitudes towards eHealth. A quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional survey was used in this study. The population of this study comprised 266 nursing students in the undergraduate programme of the Department of Nursing, among which 244 consented to participate in the study. A standardised and self-administered tool was utilised to collect data from nursing students across the four levels of study. Results showed that students in level four exhibit high scores of knowledge in the use of eLearning technology as compared to first-entry university nursing students. Nursing students used the internet frequently, especially to access social media and search for health and medical information for their study. Attitudes towards eHealth and technology were also found to be positive. The study recommends that digital literacy should be enhanced in the nursing education curriculum in other to further strengthen the knowledge and skills towards the use of eHealth and health technology among nursing students.

Impacts of Technology Use on the Workload of Registered Nurses: A Scoping Review.

Technology is an integral part of healthcare. With the rapid development of technological innovations that inform and support nurses, it is important to assess how these technologies may affect their workload particularly in rural contexts, where the workforce and supports may be limited. This literature review guided by Arksey and O'Malley's scoping review framework describes the breadth of technologies which impact on nurses' workload. Five databases (PubMed, CINAHL, PsycInfo, Web of Science, Business Source Complete) were searched. Thirty-five articles met the inclusion criteria. A data matrix was used to organize the findings. The technology interventions described in the articles covered diverse topics including: Cognitive care technologies; Healthcare providers' technologies; Communication technologies; E-learning technologies; and Assistive technologies and were categorized as: Digital Information Solutions; Digital Education; Mobile Applications; Virtual Communication; Assistive Devices; and Disease diagnoses groups based on the common features. Technology can play an important role to support nurses working in rural areas, however, not all technologies have the same impact. While some technologies showed evidence to positively impact nursing workload, this was not universal. Technology solutions should be considered on a contextual basis and thought should be given when selecting technologies to support nursing workload.

The role of instructional quality on online learning intentions of university students: The technology acceptance model of Zoom

E-learning technology has a vital role to play in supporting the realization of learning goals during the COVID-19 pandemic. One that is often used is video conferencing technology from Zoom. Many studies have discussed the important role of e-learning technology, but there are still limited studies that examine how the role of Zoom technology in increasing student engagement in online learning. Thus, this study focuses to reveal the impact of online instructional quality using Zoom video conferencing technology on increasing students’ online learning intentions. We use the technology acceptance model (TAM) approach to answer the objectives of this study. This study randomly involved 190 students at Universitas Negeri Jakarta, Indonesia through an online questionnaire. We used structural equation modeling (SEM) analysis to examine the effect on each variable. In addition, we also use a bootstrap confidence interval estimate to investigate the role of mediation. The study results reveal that students' online learning intentions are influenced by perceived usefulness and ease of using Zoom. Also, perceived usefulness and ease of use are proven to mediate the effect of instructional quality on students’ online learning intentions using Zoom video conferencing technology. The results of this study provide important implications for education practitioners to develop engaging online learning for students.

The use of e-learning in universities during the Covid-19 pandemic: An institutional theory perspective

The Covid-19 pandemic has forced universities to change learning methods from face-to-face learning to online learning. This study aims to determine the effect of institutional pressure (coercive, mimetic, and normative) on the use of online learning in universities. This study uses a quantitative approach with a total sample of 357 respondents consisting of 42 lecturers and 315 university students in Yogyakarta and Central Java. This research employs an online questionnaire as a data collection media. The questionnaires were distributed and filled out by respondents from September 2020 to February 2021. The research shows interesting findings because pressure from regulators (coercive) is not a significant predictor of e-learning use. Whereas mimetic and normative pressures have a positive and significant effect on e-learning. This study also categorizes the findings into two groups i.e., lectures and students. Students assume that coercive, mimetic, and normative significantly pressure universities to use online learning. Whereas the lecturers think that the pressure from the regulator has no significant effect because health issues are the main priority. This study contributes to the literature by providing empirical evidence on the acceptance of e-learning technology during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Analysis of University Student Satisfaction Levels with the Learning Process on Five Dimensions of Service Quality (SERVQUAL)

Each academic course must conduct a self-evaluation, one method of which is a survey of students' attitudes towards the teaching and learning they experienced. Service quality affects how satisfied students are with the institution. There are five service quality dimensions (SERVQUAL): Reliability, Responsiveness, Assurance, Empathy, and Tangible. The purpose of the study was to analyze students' level of satisfaction with the learning process on the 5 SERVQUAL Dimensions and evaluate which dimension had the highest level of satisfaction. The object of research is the active students of Almuslim University in the Odd Semester of the Academic Year 2021/2022 totalling 1,023 people. Quantitative research approach with the type of survey research. Data was collected using a Google form questionnaire which was distributed online. Analysis of the data by calculating the Percentage of Respondents' Achievement Level (RAL) followed by calculating the Community Satisfaction Index (CSI). The results showed that the highest RAL was in the Assurance Dimension, the average score was 3.23, and the RAL was 80.65% (excellent category), while the lowest RAL was in the Tangible Dimension, the average core was 3.06, and the RAL was 76.44% (excellent category). Analytical findings on a per-item basis There are five areas that need tweaking: The incorporation of e-learning technology and instructor feedback into the classroom setting. Hotspot facilities, as well as learning facilities in the lecture room, are readily available to accommodate the lecturers' high availability for academic consultations and/or Final Project discussions. The Assurance Dimension received the greatest CSI score (3.23), and the highest CSI conversion score (80.65), while the Tangible aspect received the lowest CSI score (2.94), and the lowest CSI conversion value (73.38). Overall, we received a CSI conversion score of 79.45, for a grand total of 3.18 (good).

Willingness of university students to continue using e-Learning platforms after compelled adoption of technology: Test of an extended UTAUT model.

The COVID-19 pandemic has prompted the adoption of an e-Learning pedagogy. This forced teachers and students to shift to online learning and thus was compelled to adopt online educational technology. Educational institutes have been facing challenges like insufficient infrastructure and a shortage of quality teachers. Online learning can help to address these challenges as online classes can accommodate more students. However, before implementing e-Learning technology management of institutes wants to be sure whether students will adopt new technology. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to unveil which factors are important to adopt new technology if implemented mandatorily. We tested the most popular technology acceptance model the UTAUT to understand students' intentions to continue using the e-Learning system in a mandatory environment. The study used a quantitative approach of research. The participants for this study were selected from a private university in India. The questionnaire for the study was adapted from previous studies. The survey was conducted by sharing an online link while students were attending classes online during the pandemic. Thus, the study utilized a convenience sampling technique. The data were analyzed using structural equation modelling. The findings revealed that the UTAUT model can partially explain the forceful adoption of technology. The study found 'Performance expectancy' and the 'availability of resources' as significant indicators of 'intention for continued usage'. This study recommends educational institutes should ensure students attain academic goals by using e-Learning platforms and ensuring the availability of essential resources to use the e-Learning technology.

Distance Learning in the Context of E-Learning: Trends of Postmodern Society

The article highlights the trends of the postmodern society developing in the context of a globally integrated world. The postmodern cultural trend is an exponent of the cultural and artistic aspect of the post-industrial world, including the educational aspect. Therefore, such a topic is relevant for research.
 The article analyzes the basic theoretical and methodological foundations of distance education as an effective technology of innovative e-learning. Based on the statements of scientists, it is determined that distance education in addition to effective learning technology is also a manifestation of postmodern cultural and artistic worldview.
 The article defines the essence of distance education in the context of technological process as a feature that forms the global trends of society development. The article also presents the postmodern paradigm as a defining feature of the current worldview of society, which has emerged as a result of innovation and information space.
 On the basis of the questionnaire it was determined that distance education as a technology is the most effective in the current postmodern view of the world. The study applied the integrative method of synthesis and analysis, as well as research, descriptive and scientific methods to determine the theoretical foundations of distance education. The questionnaire method was used to determine the effectiveness of distance education in e-learning as a manifestation of postmodernism. The results of the study became the basis for the definition of distance education as an effective learning technology.

BENEFITS AND DISBENEFITS OF ONLINE TEACHING DURING THE PANDEMIC: STUDENTS’ LEARNING EXPERIENCE

Background: Virtual teaching approach includes combination of e-learning technology with traditional instructor-led training as online classes. The study explores the benefits, dis-benefits of online teaching for medical and dental undergraduate students and assesses how to overcome the challenges to online medical education during the pandemic. Methods: It was a cross-sectional study. The sample size was 150 including 100 MBBS and 50 BDS students of Jinnah Medical and Dental College, Karachi. The participants were enrolled in study through convenience sampling technique. Through a questionnaire-based survey conducted in the year 2021 benefits, dis-benefits of virtual teaching and learning of pharmacology as well as the difficulties faced by the participants, were assessed. The questionnaire was developed and pilot testing was done on 20 medical students. The data was analysed using Chi-square test. Results: The overall results of this study were not up to the mark and dis-benefits experienced by the participants in this study were high. This study also highlights certain issues including technical issues of internet interruptions/ bandwidth (92%), disturbances during the online sessions (79%), missing the interactive dialogues with lecturers (75%), missing end of session revision (67%), quality issues of recorded lectures (66%), short duration of online sessions (44%). Conclusion: The online teaching during COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns had been effective in filling-in the gaps. It also highlights the areas that need to be addressed to overcome the shortcomings in order to further improve the benefits and effectiveness of online learning. Pak J Physiol 2023;19(1):33–6

The article is devoted to the use of foreign language e-learning technology at a university and the description of its didactic potential. The author substantiates the relevance of the introduction of e-learning in the system of higher education. The article reveals the essence of the concept of «e-learning». The features of e-learning that distinguish it from other types of learning are considered in the article. The article provides a classification of e-learning systems. The author proves that the use of e-learning in higher education depends on a number of external and internal factors, and it can be implemented using various methods. Special attention is paid to the advantages of using e-learning in the educational process in higher educational institutions in general and in teaching of foreign languages in particular. The article presents the description of the virtual learning environment Moodle used by the author in the educational process.

An Analysis of Educational Portals’ Implementation for Effective Online Learning

Information Communication Technology (ICT) is advancing with rapid development aimed at offering quality education among learners to ensure satisfaction as well as convenience. With the devastating effects of Coronavirus, many institutions are relying on e-learning technologies to carry out both administrative and academic activities to promote social distancing as well as curb the spread of the novel coronavirus. E-learning allows students from different geographical locations to learn as if in the classroom through the internet; providing tools that enhance effective teaching and learning. The question we ask is: are e-learning platforms performing as expected? To find out the answer to this question, an analysis of the factors identified to have affected implementation utilizing the IS implementation framework within two HEIs in Ghana is outlined in other to enable the identification of similarities and differences to be done.

Evaluating Learning Management Systems in University: Evidence in University in North Sulawesi

Learning management systems (LMS) have been established at universities around the world including at Manado State University to connect students and faculty without the confines of a traditional classroom. It is a digital software environment designed to manage user engagement and provide learning content and resources to students. The aim of this study is to evaluate the use of learning management systems in universities. The method used in this study is the combined methods we used, namely library research and surveys. The library research method also uses secondary data collected from informative articles, books, and magazines. The results of this study found that the LMS used in universities is generally good, this is because the LMS system has been introduced and teachers must use it in daily lectures as well, it is very important to determine the feedback from students as LMS users. Previous studies have demonstrated varying understandings of the impact of implementing LMS in higher education in universities around the world. Therefore, this article provides some insights into the Impact of Utilizing E-learning Technology or LMS. This study concludes that the use of post-covid-19 LMS has shown a fairly good increase both for providers of learning content, namely teachers and system managers, and on the user side, namely students so that learning activities at universities have experienced quite an increase.

Underlying factors of student engagement to E-learning

PurposeWith the advent of the COVID-19 and increased access to Internet technologies, students tend to use e-learning technologies for improved academic results, and since then, improving student engagement in a virtual space became a difficult task for educational institutions globally. The present study aims to examine the effect of key e-learning factors (i.e. perception, hedonic motivation (HM), usefulness, empowerment and attitude) on student engagement among open and distance learners (ODLs) of the central region of India.Design/methodology/approachSimple random sampling was applied to collect data from ODLs of Chhattisgarh. ODLs who are using e-learning platforms for at least one year were chosen to be the participant in the study. The authors collected 1,137 responses using both online and offline modes of collection.FindingsThe test results indicated that usefulness, HM and attitude factors were found to have a significant relationship with student engagement in e-learning, while perception and empowerment variables did not contribute to the engagement of students.Originality/valueThe present study is novel in its approach. It clarifies the key factors to student engagement which might increase the students' level of involvement in e-learning technologies, if these factors are addressed tactfully by the educational institutions or concerned administration.

Analysis of the Effect of Using E-Learning on the Learning Process Using the UTAUT Method

The purpose of this study is to conduct empirical testing of the influence of the use of the Moodle E-learning System in the Muhammadiyah Samarinda Junior High School environment in supporting the process of ICT-based activities in the teaching and learning process in order to develop ICT-based learning that is considered innovative under the standards of the 2013 Education Curriculum. This study's subjects were Muhammadiyah Junior High School students in Samarinda. The UTAUT model is used to determine the factors influencing E-Learning Behavior's purpose. The data collection survey was conducted by distributing questionnaires directly to 56 students, using Multiple Linear Regression Analysis by conducting a statistical T-test. The results of this study show the influence of expected variables in the performance of E-Learning (PE) technology, expectations on the business of using E-Learning (EE) technology, the influence of teachers and students (SI), the condition of school facilities (FC) and the suitability of learning (JF) with the behavioral intention of Muhammadiyah Junior High School students to use E-Learning learning technology by 83.4%.

One of the schools in the city of Palembang Integrated Education Institute Nurul Ilmi Banyuasin has been using website-based E-learning since 2020, which functions as an online learning medium. This research uses the Webqual 4.0 method which consists of (usability quality, information quality, service interaction and visuals). quality). The problem in this study is that the Nurul Ilmi Banyuasin Integrated Education Institute does not yet know the level of quality of E-learning services. Therefore in this study an analysis will be carried out to measure the extent to which the quality level of E-Learning at the Nurul Ilmi Banyuasin Integrated Education Institute. it is not yet known the level of quality of E-learning services. There are several things that affect the level of user satisfaction with the E-Learning system, including using e-learning and web quality which will affect the level of user satisfaction. The higher the quality of a web, the more users will access the web. User involvement in the use of E-Learning technology will determine the success of a quality system and information. The quality of information that is in accordance with what is needed will provide satisfaction for the user. This study is expected to describe the relationship between user perceptions of the measurement of E-learning services at the Nurul Ilmi Integrated Education Institute to improve or complete the information in the E-learning.

A Literature Review of E-Learning Technology in Higher Education

The increase in the use of E-learning during the COVID-19 pandemic as a consequence of the call for Work From Home (WFH) is increasingly massive. In contrast to regular times, E-learning during the COVID-19 pandemic depends on available home resources. Technology plays an essential role in supporting the implementation of e-learning which must consider the resources available at home. This research is a systematic literature review using database sources from ScienceDirect and Emerald. The inclusion criteria are research that discusses e-learning in higher education during the COVID-19 pandemic (2019-2020) from a computer science perspective. An exclusion criterion is research examining e-learning in higher education from sources outside ScienceDirect. The search results from ScienceDirect obtained 518, and Emerald got 66 relevant articles. The next stage is reviewing abstracts and titles that focus on technology in e-learning on the lecturer and student side; We obtained 23 articles and then checked them in full text. This literature study shows that technology as a support for e-learning systems during the COVID-19 period in universities needs to consider the resources available at home, namely infrastructure and applications for students and teachers, for future work in the research of friendly e-learning technology to the availability of resources at home.

Acceptance of e-learning technology by government school teachers: application of extended technology acceptance model

ABSTRACT The exponential growth of technology in the e-learning sector has reshaped the traditional way of learning because of its efficient and flexible nature. However, e-learning is still in the rudimentary phase of progress in developing countries at schools and universities. It needs to investigate the critical features behind the embracing of e-learning systems in developing countries. This study targeted the schools by investigating the critical factors towards the acceptance of an e-learning system i.e., e-Learn Punjab (e-LP) in Pakistan. Further, this study provided empirical support for acceptance of e-LP, with the proposed model based on the technology acceptance model (TAM). The model integrates factors such as self-efficacy, training, and task technology fit with TAM for inquiring about the user attitude toward e-LP. A cross-sectional survey-based study with self-administration was conducted to collect data from 310 teachers at different government schools in Punjab, a province of Pakistan. The data were analyzed with the structural equation model (SEM) by using analysis of moment structure (AMOS) software. Fallout revealed the direct effect of self-efficacy on ease of use with strong influence of training on both core constructs of TAM. The non-significant influence of self-efficacy and task technology fit was also observed on usefulness.
