DESIGNING AND BUILDING EXERCISE MODEL OF TECHNICAL ENGLISH VOCABULARIES USING CALL (COMPUTER ASSISTED LANGUAGE LEARNING)

The research is aimed to assist and facilitate the students of Electrical and Electronics Department of Politeknik Negeri Jakarta (State Polytechnics of Jakarta), Indonesia, in learning technical English vocabulary. As technical students, they study ESP (English for Specific Purposes) and they find some obstacles in memorizing technical vocabularies which are very important in order to read and understand manual books for laboratory and workshop. Some English technical vocabularies among others are “generate”, “pile”, “bench”, et cetera. The research outcome is software which will be beneficial for technical students, especially electrical and electronics students. This software can be used to practice their vocabulary skills, so they will be more skillful and knowledgeable. This software is designed by using the program of Rapid E-Learning Suite Version 5.2 and Flash CS3. The software practice contains some exercises on reading text and reading comprehension questions and presented with the multiple answers. This software is handy and flexible because students can bring it anywhere and be studied anytime. It is handy because this software is put and saved in CD (compact disc), so the students can take it with them anywhere and anytime they want to learn. In other words, they have flexibility to learn and practice English Technical Vocabularies. As a result, the students are found one of the ways to overcome their problems of memorizing vocabularies. The product is a kind of software which is easily used and portable so that the students can use the software anywhere and anytime. It consists of 3 (three) sections of exercises. At the end of each exercise, the students are evaluated automatically by looking at the scoring system. These will encourage them to get good score by repeating it again and again. So the technical words are not problem for them. Furthermore, the students can practice technical English vocabulary both at home and in the language laboratory by using this software. Domain-specific cross-language relevant question retrieval

Chinese developers often cannot effectively search questions in English, because they may have difficulties in translating technical words from Chinese to English and formulating proper English queries. For the purpose of helping Chinese developers take advantage of the rich knowledge base of Stack Overflow and simplify the question retrieval process, we propose an automated cross-language relevant question retrieval (CLRQR) system to retrieve relevant English questions for a given Chinese question. CLRQR first extracts essential information (both Chinese and English) from the title and description of the input Chinese question, then performs domain-specific translation of the essential Chinese information into English, and finally formulates an English query for retrieving relevant questions in a repository of English questions from Stack Overflow. We propose three different retrieval algorithms (word-embedding, word-matching, and vector-space-model based methods) that exploit different document representations and similarity metrics for question retrieval. To evaluate the performance of our approach and investigate the effectiveness of different retrieval algorithms, we propose four baseline approaches based on the combination of different sources of query words, query formulation mechanisms and search engines. We randomly select 80 Java, 20 Python and 20 .NET questions in SegmentFault and V2EX (two Chinese Q&A websites for computer programming) as the query Chinese questions. We conduct a user study to evaluate the relevance of the retrieved English questions using CLRQR with different retrieval algorithms and the four baseline approaches. The experiment results show that CLRQR with word-embedding based retrieval achieves the best performance.

A study of patent analysis of LED bicycle light by using modified DEMATEL and life span

The present study proposed a modified decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) method. This innovation method involves collecting the repeated or identically defined technical keywords of patent techniques related to light-emitting diode (LED) bicycle light to determine the ratios of the normalized numerical values of these technical keywords by using one technical domain as the primary domain and another as a variable. The values obtained are then converted to mutual influence levels on a scale of 0 to 4, replacing the conventional expert questionnaire. In this study, in accordance with the operational steps of the decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory method, a general relational influence matrix, direct and indirect relationships diagram, and values of centrality (D + R) and causality (D − R) were obtained. A causal diagram was therefore created. The causal diagram was drawn using values of (D + R) and (D − R) as the two axes and facilitated determining the levels of mutual influence between technical domains. In accordance with the proposed modified decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory method, this study collected patents related to LED bicycle light; moreover, the normalized numerical values of key technical, part/component, and function words that appeared in these patents were calculated. Furthermore, clusters of technical and part or component words were defined in accordance with the first-layer technical category. The second-layer technical categories and functional categories were subsequently defined under the first-layer technical categories to establish the technique–function matrix, thereby dividing the techniques related to LED bicycle light into seven main technical domains. This study then analyzed patent life span. Patent life span was calculated using the announcement date of related patents. Finally, this study investigated the development potential of each technical domain of LED bicycle light by conducting a combined analysis of causal diagram obtained by modified DEMATEL method, activity trend chart of techniques, and patent life spans. The proposed patent analysis method and results can serve companies and engineers as references to facilitate developing new patents.

Using Talanoa to develop bilingual word lists of technical vocabulary in the trades

ABSTRACTIt is important for anyone entering a profession to learn their profession’s specialised language. This is also true of those learning trades such as automotive technology or plumbing. Knowledge of specialised language allows trades professionals to speak to other professionals and read technical material. Although this technical language is new to all students, learning it is harder for students learning in a second language. In this article we provide support for this learning for students from the Pacific Island nation of Tonga, who are studying a trade in English either in Tonga or abroad. In prior work we developed technical word lists in four trades, identifying the technical vocabulary in a 1.6 million-word corpus of course material. In this article, we extend that research by developing bilingual English-Tongan word lists, using culturally appropriate Talanoa methodology to draw on the specialist knowledge of Tongan-speaking trades’ professionals. Translation revealed that numerous technical words do not have a direct translation in Tongan, particularly infrequent English words. It also revealed words with a clear Tongan equivalent, and Tonganised English words. The bilingual word lists will benefit Tongan trades’ trainees in Tonga and those who are migrants to English countries.

Squalid and Obscure: Timbral Word Painting at the Arpa Doppia

Summary of Results: While functionally versatile, the arpa doppia, an Italian harp of imposing size with multiple layers of resonating strings, revealed its nature as fondamento, in the subtle art of continuo. Direct contact with the open strings gave singers, accompanying themselves on the harp, unparalleled control over the instrument’s timbral potential. This is reflected in the role of the instrument within musica secreta, private concerts at the courts of Ferrara and Modena stylistically favouring word painting and chromaticism, in ensembles such as the concerto delle donna and Baroni sisters. The expressive freedom of their art influenced poets and composers and contributed to the development of the seconda prattica at the turn of the sixteenth century. Indeed, voice and harp were held up as the ideal way to perform epic poetry, a reflection of the mesmerising contrast and colour their combined forces could deliver. How do we find this unique skill-set today from a broken line of tradition, contending with limited, conflicting primary resources? There is very little surviving repertoire specific to the instrument, and other sources such as paintings are static representations with considerable variation in position and placement of the instrument, body and hands, making it hard to replicate. In the years dedicated to exploring the arpa doppia, we harpists uncover these insights through shared motions and motivations of our forebears— finding a way to play like them by trying to vividly colour the text as they did. This is a way artistic research can bring to life the spectrum of lost practice and technique. My research has resulted in the creation of timbral notation for the arpa doppia, easily added to music notation and publishing software. This notation is designed to help recreate as much as possible all the timbral refinement found by the hands of masterful singer-harpists. It documents, builds upon and preserves the invaluable research of historical practitioners, using visual, contact-based diagrams to provide clarity in understanding this evocative and highly specialised art form. With this foundation of timbre and text, it aims to reconstitute the virtuosity, influence and innovation of the original arpa doppia players, through our shared practice today. Biography: While playing as the Australian Youth Orchestra's Principal Harpist, and as a fellow of the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, Kit Spencer's Honours degree culminated in studying Berio's infamous Sequenza II with its foremost interpreter, Alice Giles. Her passion for colour, gesture and bass lead her to arpa doppia, beginning with Andrew Lawrence King's St. Petersburg production of Landi's La Morte d'Orfeo and Monteverdi's L'Orfeo in Bauska Castle, Latvia.

This paper is intended to develop a word list that helps engineering students with engineering vocabulary frequently used across different disciplines. For this goal, an Engineering English Corpus (EEC) including around 4,000,000 running words was compiled and constructed from 40 textbooks commonly used in 8 engineering disciplines: chemical, computer, electrical, electronics, environmental, industrial, materials science and mechanical. This paper identified a total of 1,170 word families comprised of General Service List (GSL), Academic Word List (AWL) and Technical Word List (TWL) through two criteria such as frequency and range. In detail, the cut-off frequency of GSL and AWL was more than 100 times and the range was at least 10 times in all 8 disciplines exclusive of TWL. The result of the analysis showed that 1) not all words in GSL and AWL were used frequently in the EEC; 2) GSL, AWL and TWL could be learned and taught regardless of the pre-determined order; 3) the created engineering English word list could meet the basic need of engineering students.

Science-specific technical vocabulary in science fiction-fantasy texts: A case for ‘language through literature’

This study investigated the lexical coverage and frequency of occurrence of 318 common science-specific technical word families in a corpus of science fiction-fantasy texts in order to determine the potential for science fiction-fantasy literature to be a resource for incidental technical vocabulary acquisition. Coverage of the word list in the science fiction-fantasy corpus was found to be 0.50%, which was 46% higher than coverage of the same list in a corpus of fiction texts (0.27%), and 70% lower than coverage of the same list in a corpus of academic science journals (1.68%). These findings suggest that, in terms of exposure to technical vocabulary, science fiction-fantasy could serve as a bridge resource for second-language learners studying or prespecializing in the Sciences. A frequency analysis revealed that the highest potential for lexical learning occurs at the 500,000-word reading level, at which 21% of science words occurred 10+ times and 83% occurred 1+ times. Potential lexical gains, as well as both practical and theoretical implications, are discussed.

What is technicality? A Technicality Analysis Model for EAP vocabulary

The identification of technical words for teaching discipline-specific EAP courses remains a problem for materials designers and teachers alike. This study proposes a method that identifies technicality and measures the degree of technicality of a word. The Technicality Analysis Model (TAM) suggests five levels of technicality: least technical, slightly technical, moderately technical, very technical and most technical. In identifying technicality we take four factors into account: 1) both general and specialised senses of a word; (2) the banding of a word in reference word lists; (3) the polysemy of a word; (4) the literal meaning of a word. The set of categorisation criteria is stringent in the sense that even least technical words may have specialised senses in a specific discipline but those senses may be almost the same as the general sense. All words in more technical categories have specialised senses. We trialled the TAM with 837 financial-sector-specific words generated from a 6.7-million-word corpus of financial texts. Results show that with the categorisation criteria in the technicality analysis, every financial-sector-specific word could be categorised into one of the technical word categories. Future research may use the TAM to develop a repertoire of discipline-specific vocabulary for EAP teaching and learning.

Incidencia de la lectura en el vocabulario en lengua materna y extranjera

Este artículo tiene como objetivo conocer la incidencia de la frecuencia de lectura en la competencia léxica en español y en lengua extranjera (inglés y francés) de una muestra de 171 estudiantes del Máster Universitario en Profesorado de la Universidad de Málaga. Los datos se han recabado a través de una prueba de disponibilidad léxica, de un test de identificación de tecnicismos (en español, inglés y francés) y de un cuestionario sociológico. Los resultados corroboran la hipótesis de partida que postula que a través de la lectura el informante puede reforzar su caudal léxico y, especialmente, el vocabulario pasivo. En lengua extranjera, sobre todo en inglés, la lectura cobra un papel principal favoreciendo tanto la actualización de un mayor número de palabras como el reconocimiento de tecnicismos. En cambio, en lengua materna, el efecto de la lectura es significativo tan solo en el vocabulario pasivo. El nivel de estudios alcanzado por los informantes estandariza la competencia léxica que se ve mejorada parcialmente por la frecuencia de lectura.

Krugman vs Garicano: Individual and Cultural Differences in the Rhetoric of two Economic Op-ed Writers

The present paper attempts to account for the rhetorical traits of two prestigious economists, who are also authors of economic op-eds: Paul Krugman and Luis Garicano, who write for a prestigious American newspaper, the New York Times, and for the renowned Spanish newspaper, El País, respectively. Through a contrastive study of a roughly 12-thousand-word corpus of either author, this analysis has attempted, on the one hand, to endeavor a qualitative analysis scrutinizing the formal, or lexical-semantic aspects, of their prose in terms of technical words, clichés and coinages, as well as the patterns of conceptualization of the metaphors they use to describe the economic crisis that is sweeping the Western world at large. The second part of the analysis has concentrated upon the interpersonality of the texts, at the pragmatic layer of the op-ed genre, thus covering the extra-linguistic context of the texts which have been scrutinized under the umbrella of metadiscourse. These two different, but complementary, levels of analysis have led to the conclusion that the authors’ styles depict two individual ways in which op-eds are written in the economic world, but that their styles also refl ect cultural and linguistic differences in the way columns are viewed in the English and Spanish languages.

Two Sun over One Firmament Culture: A Political-Communication Analysis on the Contestation of Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur over “Indonesian Malay Communities”

This paper tries to extent a personal experience on an interesting discussion concerning the communication issues in Medan, North Sumatra. There is the inclination of the North Sumatrans to the news broadcasted by Kuala Lumpur and Medan’s tends to identify with its cultural similarities. For Jakarta is officially the center of political authority over the ‘Indonesian Malay Communities’, this dual cultural loyalty creates an imaginary phenomenon: ‘Two Suns’ in term of authoritative news resources that applies upon ‘One Firmament Culture’. This means that there is a divided news orientation among the Indonesian Malay Communities’ that put Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur in a tacit contestation. While until today this kind of contestation is still going on, the same features have brought me to the phenomenon of hierarchical communication structure. This vividly seen when we realize how lopsided is in nature the communication relations between the global authorities who have controlled the strategic means of communications as well as their contents with the rest of the world. Every day millions of professionals use a countless number of technical words to refer to the different structures inside the skull. But few of them would know how to explain their origin. In this study we take an in-depth look into the etymological origins of some of these neuroanatomical terms. The study takes an etymological tour of the central nervous system. It is in no way meant to be an exhaustive, detailed review of the terms currently in use, but instead a means to familiarise the reader with the linguistic past of words like brain, hippocampus, thalamus, claustrum, fornix, corpus callosum or limbic system. All of them come from either Greek or Latin, which were used for centuries as the lingua francas of science. The study also analyses the evolution of the word meninges, originally of Greco-Latin origin, although its current usages derive from Arabic. The neuroanatomical terms that are in use today do not come from words that associate a particular brain structure with its function, but instead from words that reflect the formal or conceptual similarity between a structure and a familiar or everyday entity (for example, an object or a part of the human body). In other cases, these words indicate the spatial location of the neuroanatomical structure with respect to a third, or they may be terms derived from characters in Greco-Latin mythology.

One of the short chapbooks, Seven (2011), is tiny. From The Welcome (2006) through Soldier Quick with Rain (2013) there is a continuity of purpose and practice that is remarkable. Each book contains prose poems and only prose poems that nonetheless read quite clearly as poetic. They are poetic, because they contain thousands of unusual words, thus fulfilling T. S. Eliot’s edict that the poet keep the words of English speech alive and vivid. They are poetic, because their rhetoric is as emphatic and organizing a principle as Wallace Stevens’s in Harmonium (1923). There is poetry even behind the rhetoric and vocabulary—a sort of quicksilver feeling. Many of Friedman’s prose poems are stories about a Green Bear. He is a brilliant disguise for a shy author who can recount his triumphs, failures and muddlings-through without the boastful “I” or “You” so prevalent in modern American poetry. The contemporary poet is often addressing herself as a double—“You”—in a way that almost slaps the reader in the face. “NOT you,” she means, “I’M you. This is all about ME.” Friedman’s Green Bear is a most endearing character, at times a sort of Babar of gentility, but most often a stalwart hero of adventure—of wars, ocean voyages, trips to the moon, explorations and encounters of all sorts. Most of the technical words from All Quiet on the Western Front (1929) and Two Years Before The Mast (1840) turn up here—nautical terms, military terms, terms of archaic weaponry, Shakespearean diction, along with colloquial words like “i-chat,” wonderfully mixed. Fragments of conversations appear and disappear. There is a whole prose poem to prove that all the world is coffee (one pictures the narrator leaving his Grove Street apartment and hitting each coffee bar in the Village until he is in a state of caffeinated ecstasy.) In The Welcome, chosen in 2004 for the National Poetry Series by Stephen Dunn, we find “A Brace of Firearms” which shows us one of Friedman’s verbal games, an exercise in parallel expressions for a group of individuals—“a brace of pistols”, “a pride of lions,” “a pack of wolves,” “a nest of vipers.” Of the Green Bear, he writes: “Since there was only one of him, he deserved a brace of pistols to fight a pride of lions.” “Typewriter” is a complete tour de force of typewriter lingo: I am a typewriter. Practically an antique. Before I pass into oblivion, let me assert myself; so you may come to honor in passing the machine that has been a good companion to writers. Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their typewriters. In my sculpted black steel body I house as zany a bunch of characters as you might want to meet, from A to Z; plus enough signs, symbols and numbers to read the future without animal entrails. I get good character references (this being one of them) despite the fact that I am occasionally shiftless. Upper or lower, I’m a case in point. A Preliminary Research to Develop A Customized Set of Vocabulary Size Test

This is a preliminary research to investigate useful words to function effectively in academic contexts, vocabulary size, the first-year students word list, and the steps to design the customized set of entry-level vocabulary size test. This research was a library research. To find out the ELESP students current vocabulary size, a vocabulary size test designed by Paul Nation was administered. The results show that useful words were (1) high-frequency words containing 2,000 word families, (2) academic words specified in the Academic Word List (Coxhead:2000), (3) technical words, (4) low-frequency words. The result of the administration of Nations Vocabulary Size Test shows that the students scores range between 33 and 96 words, with the mean score of 66. It means that the students vocabulary size ranges between 3,300 and 9,600 word families. The average students vocabulary size was 6,600 word families, which imply that most ELESP students are ready to read texts containing 88.7% word coverage. In order to increase their vocabulary size by 10,000 or more, they need to learn technical words and low-frequency words of a specialized subject area. Using Nations specifications for making the test, some procedures of test design are: Sampling the words for the items, Making the Stem, Writing the choices, The Order of the items in the Test, Piloting, Administering the Test. A Corpus-Based Study on Collocation of Technical Words in EST

This paper adopts the corpus linguistic approach in the morphologically-based study of technical words of collocations in the EST. In this research, the writer extracts all the collocates of two pairs of technical words with reference to their base forms and inflectional plural forms; calculate their MI values; analyze their collocations behaviors and then conduct cluster analyses of all the collocates. The results show that each pair of the node words does not invite quite a number of the same collocates both in form and in meaning and the shared collocates are still identified as different cluster members based on their proximity, which shows heterogeneity of language and gets implications for EST teaching and lexicography.

Arrheton - Unspeakable in the Greek Mystery Cults

The paper presents meaning and use of two technical words important for understanding and interpretation of the ancient mystery cults and mystical experience of ancient Greeks: arrheton and aporrheton – “unspeakable” and “forbidden”. The introduction contains general guidelines of so called “Greek religion” with its focus on performance and ritual and describes the role of mystery cults in the frame of this adogmatic religious system. The paper explains lexicography of the crucial terms, including etymology, ancient vocabularies and grammar and then turns to the catalogue and interpretation of the most important literary and epigraphical evidence on the use and meaning of arrheton in the Greek culture. The catalogue contains Aristotle, Xenophon, Herodotus, Aristophanes, Euripides, Sophocles, Apuleius and Derveni Papyrus as well as early Christian writers.

본 연구는 비한자문화권 외국인들의 효율적인 한국어 습득을 위한 한자교육 방안을 모색하는 데에 목적이 있다. 이를 위하여 터키의 에르지예스대학 한국어문학과 학생들의 한국어 학습 실태를 분석하여, 한자 교육의 현황 및 한국어 교육에서 한자 교육의 역할 등을 탐색하였다. 우선, 학문 목적의 한국어 학습자들에게는 한자로 구성된 고난도 어휘를 포함한 전문서적을 읽는 것이 학부 과정에서 요구되기 때문에, 한자 학습은 매우 중요하다. 에르지예스 대학 한국어문학과 학생들의 실태 분석 결과에서 한국어휘 학습 중 가장 어려운 부분은 한자어, 고유어, 외래어, 관용어, 전문 용어 등으로 나타났다. 에르지예스 대학 한국어문학과에서는 학생들의 한국어 학습 능력을 향상시키기 위하여 3학년부터 필수 과목으로 한자 수업을 진행하고 있다. 한자라는 언어의 이중부담을 덜기 위해서는 초급 과정의 교재에서부터 부수를 통해 한자어의 의미를 이해하고 유추할 수 있는 교육방안을 마련해야 한다. 이러한 과정이 선행되면 한자학습에 대한 부담을 덜 수 있다. 한자는 형성자와 회의자가 80%를 차지하고 있다. 그 중 부수가 의미부분을 차지하는 경향이 많으므로, 부수를 익히면 한자를 쉽게 익힐 수 있다. 그러므로 초급에서부터 학생들이 부수를 이해하는 것이 한자 학습에 도움이 되며, 한자어 학습에 대한 학생들의 흥미를 유발시킬 수 있다. 그러므로 초급에서부터 부수를 이해하여 선행하는 것이 한자 학습에 도움이 된다. 아울러 에르지예스 대학 한국어문학과 학생들은 한국어 학습의 효과를 높일 수 있는 방법으로 혼자서 영상물을 보거나 음악을 감상하는 등의 방법을 사용하고 있었다. 비한자문화권에 있는 학습자들의 한국어 교육의 효율성을 높이기 위해서는 경어와 관용어를 다루는 교재가 필요하다. 또한, 부수를 통한 한자어 어휘 학습을 위한 교재의 개발도 필요하다. 앞으로 비한자문화권에서 한국어 교육을 높이기 위해서 한국어 학습자의 요구에 부응하는 한자어 교재 제작 및 한자어를 효율적으로 교육하는 방법에 대한 연구가 지속적으로 이루어져야 할 것이다.
