Abstract This article is based on a preliminary paper commissioned by UNESCO through the International Council for Educational Media and the Scottish Council for Educational Technology. ‘Media education’ and ‘media studies’ are terms used to mean the study and critical analysis of the mass media ‐‐ principally cinema, television, radio and the press, but also incorporating other social and cultural phenomena, such as advertising and popular music, which are contained within, or disseminated by, the mass media. Within the remit of the study, the following topics are addressed: The nature and range of existing teaching materials in this field. Issues and problems in the gathering and updating of information on such materials. Possible format of such a catalogue. Anticipated ways in which such a catalogue could be used and the anticipated market for it. Organization and publication of such a catalogue and methods of dissemination.
