Systematic quantitative literature review of the dialogic pedagogy literature

This systematic quantitative literature review was conducted to analyse and synthesise the extant corpus of knowledge on dialogic pedagogy within school settings, and thus identify theoretical and methodological gaps in the literature, which might suggest new avenues for research. A search of eight databases (2014–2020) revealed an initial pool of 2443 papers, which was reduced to 61 after screening for eligibility. An analysis of the 61 papers was framed around the following questions: What is the dominant mode of classroom discourse (monologic or dialogic) reported in the literature? Where is dialogic pedagogy being researched? Who are the dominant voices in the field? and Which year levels and school subjects have been examined using which methodologies? A key finding of the analysis was the absence of substantial research by Australian or New Zealand authors, specifically where mathematics education is concerned. Similarly, there is little investigation focusing on the early years of schooling. While some education areas have been well researched with regard to dialogic pedagogy, further work is required that focuses on areas such as the early years of schooling; non-science contexts; and the use of qualitative research methods.

Investigating Ecotourism Opportunities Measurements in a Complex Adaptive System: A Systematic Literature Review

Identifying and quantifying ecotourism opportunities are critical processes in sustainable tourism planning, which is challenging, since ecotourism is a Complex Adaptive System (CAS). This study investigated Ecotourism Opportunities Measurements (EOMs) in the literature and mapped the research trends to provide practical implications for research in this area. A systematic quantitative literature review began with a scientometric analysis in CiteSpace to examine the existing knowledge and the state of the art in EOMs. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) protocol was then applied to refine the initial search results, and snowballing was used to collect additional articles. The refined set was then thematically coded and quantitatively analyzed. Our findings show that existing studies on ecotourism opportunities predominantly focus on the impacts of ecotourism on the environment, stakeholders’ contributions toward ecotourism development, sustainability, and responsible behavior of local communities in ecotourism promotion. In addition, five dimensions have been identified under which ecotourism opportunities can be measured, including nature, environmental education/protection, sustainability, socio-cultural benefits, and tourist satisfaction. Existing scales or indices assess potential destinations qualitatively rather than quantitatively. In contrast, an index-based approach might help to solve the challenges of evaluating ecotourism opportunities as a CAS, as well as to quantitatively assess potential destinations to support decision-making related to ecotourism promotion.

Sampling Twitter users for social science research: evidence from a systematic review of the literature

All social media platforms can be used to conduct social science research, but Twitter is the most popular as it provides its data via several Application Programming Interfaces, which allows qualitative and quantitative research to be conducted with its members. As Twitter is a huge universe, both in number of users and amount of data, sampling is generally required when using it for research purposes. Researchers only recently began to question whether tweet-level sampling—in which the tweet is the sampling unit—should be replaced by user-level sampling—in which the user is the sampling unit. The major rationale for this shift is that tweet-level sampling does not consider the fact that some core discussants on Twitter are much more active tweeters than other less active users, thus causing a sample biased towards the more active users. The knowledge on how to select representative samples of users in the Twitterverse is still insufficient despite its relevance for reliable and valid research outcomes. This paper contributes to this topic by presenting a systematic quantitative literature review of sampling plans designed and executed in the context of social science research in Twitter, including: (1) the definition of the target populations, (2) the sampling frames used to support sample selection, (3) the sampling methods used to obtain samples of Twitter users, (4) how data is collected from Twitter users, (5) the size of the samples, and (6) how research validity is addressed. This review can be a methodological guide for professionals and academics who want to conduct social science research involving Twitter users and the Twitterverse.

Feedback on Written Assessments in Universities

In higher education, the role of assessment has evolved from serving only the purpose of evaluation of the outcomes of the learning process to assessment as part of the learning purposes. Summative or formative, the potential of assessment to facilitate learning is now recognised. Feedback is one of the most influential factors on learning but is also one of the least satisfactory elements of the student experience. How has interest in, understanding of, and implementation of feedback changed over time? What are the general characteristics of feedback implementation found in literature? To what productive directions might future research feedback on assessment take? To gain these insights, a systematic quantitative review of literature on feedback on written assessment in higher education was undertaken, revealing that feedback as a field of inquiry, despite burgeoning interest, remains nascent, mostly ‘stuck in old ways'.

Navigating to smoother regulatory waters for Australian commercial vessels capable of remote or autonomous operation: a systematic quantitative literature review

ABSTRACT A barrier to the deployment of autonomous vessels in Australia's commercial and defence context is the gap in understanding how existing regulatory frameworks apply and identifying a best-practice regulatory approach. This Systematic Quantitative Literature Review (SQLR) identifies and assesses relevant available literature from domestic and international resources concerning current and future regulation of domestic autonomous vessels in Australia and other nations. A standard methodology is used combining a traditional narrative review and a meta-analysis tailored for peer-reviewed literature. Only twenty research articles of varying origin, type and content were identified, highlighting a significant literature gap regarding domestic regulation of autonomous vessels in Australia and other nations. Filling the domestic literature gap is critical for further domestic regulatory development, particularly because of the growing range and functions of such vessels. The literature review undertaken supports the development of future best practice regulation, which will facilitate the ongoing development and use of autonomous vessels.

Aquaculture ethics: A systematic quantitative review and critical analysis of aquaculture ethics scholarship

AbstractThis paper investigates the ethical values, moral principles, methods and reform proposals in aquaculture ethics scholarship to develop a comprehensive and balanced list of aquaculture ethical principles. A Systematic Quantitative Literature Review methodology is employed to parse 150 journal articles on aquaculture ethics. Methodologies, specific ethical values, broad principles, recommended reforms and trends over time are quantified and assessed. Through analysis of invoked values and recommended reforms, six core marine economy ethics principles are identified: Environmental Protection, Fairness, Stakeholder Participation, Harm Prevention, Beneficence and Trustworthiness. A comprehensive multidimensional legitimacy model is employed to uncover ethical gaps and identify promising areas for future aquaculture ethics research.

Teaching out-of-field in Home Economics: A Systematic Quantitative Literature Review

전문적으로 훈련받지 않은 과목의 교육(Out-of-Field Teaching [OOFT])은 학생의 학습 결과와 교사 감소에 영향을 미치는 세계적 현상이다. 일화적 증거에 따르면 가정과 교사의 부족이 OOFT를 유발하지만, 그럼에도 그 영향에 대한 연구는 거의 없다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 연구결과의 격차를 다루고 기준선을 설정하기 위해 체계적 정량적 문헌분석(SQLR)가 수행되었다. 선정기준은 중등학교 가정과교육 및 OOFT에 관한, 동료 심사를 거친, 전체 텍스트가 제공된 그리고 영어로 출간된 문헌이어야 한다. 출간 날짜는 제한 요인이 아니다. 아홉 개의 데이터베이스가 2022년 3월에 검색되었고, 제외 프로토콜에 따라 25개의 문헌이 유지되었다. 적격 논문은 13개국 저자의 1979년에서 2021년 사이에 출간된 문헌이었다. 다섯 개의 논문은 OOFT와 가정교과에만 초점을 두었다. OOFT를 설명하는 데 가장 많이 사용된 용어는 '적격/부적격' (n=19, 76%)이었다. 전 세계적으로 가장 많이 보고된 OOFT의 원인은 현장 가정과 교사의 부족이었다 (n=17, 68%). 학생들에게 미치는 영향에는 낮은 수준의 교육 경험이 포함되었다. Territorial Knowledge Dynamics and Governance of Industry Networks: A Systematic Quantitative Review of Empirical Literature

Despite the impacts of globalization and market liberalization on economic development, factors such as location, space, industrial agglomeration, and local knowledge remain strong determinants of innovation performance and adaptive capacity in regional economies. The role of networks and institutions in knowledge sharing and innovation is therefore of paramount importance in analyzing regional development and has received significant academic attention accordingly. This review discusses trends and developments in a growing body of empirical research investigating these issues. The aim is to highlight some of the gaps between empirical research, policy relevance, and practical impact by focusing on the crucial but underdeveloped theoretical contributions of network governance approaches.

Live projects: a mixed-methods exploration of existing scholarship

PurposeThis paper aims to investigate trends and themes within the literature pertaining to live projects, and in so doing, highlight possible areas of future exploration and research.Design/methodology/approachThis paper utilises a Systematic Quantitative Literature Review (SQLR) method, wherein keywords and phrases are entered into selected citation databases generating a reproducible list of literature. This is then refined using a specified list of criteria and read for relevance. The resulting literature forms the basis of qualitative and quantitative analyses and review.FindingsThe reviewed scholarship demonstrates a surge in publications since the early 2000s, with 75% of publications originating from the USA, Canada, or the UK Furthermore, themes related to live project definitions, outputs and rationales were examined, demonstrating that common factors such as “community”, “construction” and “pedagogy” are not mutually exclusive but tend to overlap, making the topic hard to define. These results also demonstrate a proclivity for projects with a built output. Barriers to live projects were also assessed, and it was found that administrative hurdles, such as time and budget constraints, were the biggest concern to live project practitioners. Finally, critical voices were examined and showed that live projects need to reflect on the nature of their engagement with the community.Research limitations/implicationsThis method, while capturing a substantial portion of the published scholarship, does not capture all live project literature due to limitations such as language and a strong focus on peer-reviewed publications. Furthermore, this research only captures literature that has been published. It does not reflect the variety and extent of live project activity occurring globally. For reasons such as unfamiliarity and inconsistencies with the use of live project terminologies, doubtless many unpublished live projects are conducted–yet not represented in these findings. This study may help live project execution by providing valuable examples of existing trends.Originality/valueThis paper captures the metadata from 110 live project publications, allowing for wide-ranging analysis, categorisation and discussion on the topic.

Investigating Flow in Motorcycle Tourism: A Review of Previous Research and Identification of Opportunities

Abstract This paper explores whether the psychological construct of flow plays an important role in shaping motorcycle tourism behavior and examines the relative success of methodologies previously used to model flow, in general. The systematic quantitative literature review (SQLR) method was applied. It is concluded that flow, the mental state, is likely a meaningful intrinsic motivator of motorcycle tourism. Limitations related to previous efforts to model this phenomenon are identified. Suggestions for future research on the role of flow in the motorcycle tourism context are provided with domain-specific methodological strategies outlined.

Types of innovation and artificial intelligence: A systematic quantitative literature review and research agenda

This study provides a systematic overview of innovation research strands revolving around AI. By adopting a Systematic Quantitative Literature Review (SQLR) approach, we retrieved articles published in academic journals, and analysed them using bibliometric techniques such as keyword co-occurrences and bibliographic coupling. The findings allow us to offer an up-to-date outline of existing literature that are embedded into an interpretative framework allowing to disentangle the key antecedents and consequences of AI in the context of innovation. Among the antecedents, we identify technological, social, and economic reasons leading firms to embrace AI to innovate. In addition to detecting the disciplinary foci, we also identify firms' product innovation, process innovation, business model innovation and social innovation, as key consequences of AI deployment. Drawing on the key findings from this study, we offer research directions for further investigation in relation to different types of innovation.

Crucial considerations when using 1033 Program data as a measure of police militarization

ABSTRACT The 1033 Program has become a favored dataset for scholars examining the impact of police militarization on outcomes such as fatal force and crime rates. However, these data are often not treated appropriately, leading to mixed results that have been salient in US policy decision-making. Beyond the US, other nations looking at these studies may use their implications in decision-making about equipping the police with military items, and improperly handled data may generate inaccurate conclusions that drive policy decisions. To illustrate necessary considerations for proper data handling, this article conducts a systematic review of quantitative literature using 1033 Program data to determine how these data were handled. Findings show that 12 out of 14 peer-reviewed articles do not use the data properly for longitudinal data, and that a wide variety of categorization schemes are used. This article concludes with best practice recommendations for obtaining, structuring, and categorizing the data.

Regulatory overlap: A systematic quantitative literature review

AbstractRegulatory failure caused by overlapping regulations is ubiquitous, with examples in all jurisdictions across a range of disciplines. Overlapping regulation can be problematic. It obscures policy objectives and hinders the development of effective and clear regulation. In addition, regulatory overlap can inflict real costs on businesses through repetitive inspections and data collection efforts. It is particularly burdensome when agencies issue conflicting rules with inconsistent standards. Recognizing that regulatory overlap exists and is a problem provides the context to this program of research. Our research project was an exploration using a systematic quantitative literature review (SQLR) method to better understand the way regulatory failure, caused by overlapping regulations, has featured in academic literature. The SQLR method was chosen as it employs a systematic process to consolidate a sample of literature, and quantitative measures to draw connections between different academic sources. Ultimately, our research concluded that the literature does not provide clear prescriptive principles for reducing unnecessary regulatory overlap. This begs a question as to whether more research is needed in this area, or alternatively whether the complexities raised by regulatory overlap are not reducible to general principles.

An Analysis of the Supervised Learning Approach for Online Fraud Detection

Illegal online financial transactions are now more sophisticated and global in scope, which costs both parties—customers and businesses. For fraud prevention and detection in the online setting, many different strategies have been proposed. While all of these techniques aim to detect and stop fraudulent online transactions, they differ in terms of their features, advantages, and disadvantages. This study assesses the current fraud detection research in this area to detect the employed algorithms and assessing in accordance with predetermined standards. The systematic quantitative literature review methodology was used to assess the research studies in the subject of online fraud detection. A hierarchical typology is created based on the supervised learning methods in scientific articles and their properties. Therefore, by integrating three selection criteria—accuracy, coverage, and costs—our research presents the best methods for identifying fraud in a novel approach. Relationship quality in sport: a systematic quantitative literature review

ABSTRACT Research questions Relationship quality research in sport has received increased attention in recent years. A systematic review is needed to synthesise this growing body of scholarship to inform future inquiry. We reviewed the extant literature to ask: when, where and how has previous relationship quality research been conducted? Which sporting relationships and perspectives have been examined? What theories, scales and constructs have been utilised to examine relationship quality? We conclude by outlining critical gaps in knowledge requiring further research consideration. Research methods Sixty-three peer-reviewed journal articles focusing on the examination of relationship quality within organised sport settings were identified for analysis utilising the systematic quantitative literature review (SQLR) method. Results and findings Relationship quality studies have been conducted across diverse geographic and sporting contexts; however, a discrepancy exists in the theoretical underpinnings, relationships examined, and methodologies employed. Only a third of papers applied a guiding theory when investigating relationship quality. The majority (75%) of papers limited their investigation to singular dyadic connections from one perspective. Significant gaps in knowledge regarding the relationship quality experienced by several key groups, such as managers, administrators and officials remain under researched. Implications The synthesis provided by the review highlights opportunities to advance knowledge in this emerging research area. Our findings demonstrate that relationship quality research has not yet fully realised the potential of multi-dyad perspectives and diverse theoretical underpinnings contributing to discourse. The scholarly agenda developed through this research will work to advance relationship quality research and assist sport organisation management.

Progress in research on seniors' well-being in tourism: A systematic review

Research on well-being has experienced exponential growth in tourism studies. However, knowledge about well-being of seniors in tourism is still limited, and thus conceptually underdeveloped, despite the growth of the ageing population and increased research focus on the subject. Consequently, the purpose of this review is to provide a holistic understanding of seniors' well-being in tourism, delineate the current research status, then identify gaps and future avenues for research. A systematic quantitative literature review was conducted, leading to 56 eligible articles extracted for subsequent analysis. By mapping the current state of knowledge, the study indicates a need for a comprehensive theoretical framework based on a holistic view of seniors' well-being in tourism. The findings of the systematic review suggest the need for a eudaimonic approach to the topic and research from residents' perspectives. Suggestions are made to investigate constraints to well-being and cultural differences in conceptions of seniors' well-being in tourism.

Environmental sustainability in sport: a systematic literature review

ABSTRACT Research question How are bibliographic and methodological patterns, as well current contributions of environmental sustainability in sport literature, shaping a research agenda that informs effective environmental responses? Research methods This study surveys previous literature reviews. It then combines a systematic quantitative literature review and meta-synthesis to determine bibliographic, methodological and theoretical patterns of literature and to assess the key contributions and knowledge gaps. Results and Findings Limitations in the scope of previous literature reviews established the need for a more comprehensive examination of knowledge in the field. This systematic review identified environmental sustainability in sport as an emerging field with predominantly North American (in terms of both authorship and geographical settings) studies. Contributions on management and governance of environmental initiatives, shifts in environmental discourses, environmental education in sport contexts, and environmental sustainability through sport are discussed with the purpose to set directions for future research. Implications The international urgency and complexity of environmental issues necessitate the adoption of a global perspective and research approaches that enable sport researchers and practitioners to collaborate closely on knowledge development. Future research may expand on existing managerial and environmental education contributions and explore new theoretical terrains to advance knowledge on environmental policy and innovative approaches for effective design and implementation of sport industry’s environmental responses.

Planning for fauna-sensitive road design: A review

Roads can have significant negative impacts on wildlife. Fauna-sensitive road design (FSRD) can alleviate adverse impacts on several species by installing specialised structures, such as wildlife crossing structures. This developing subfield has generally, however, had a limited impact on transportation planning and management. Indeed, most research is focused narrowly on technological solutions, instead of broader policy learnings. This systematic quantitative literature review (SQLR) of international literature sought to identify the biodiversity concerns acknowledged in transport planning policy, as well as the barriers to the adoption of environmental policies within transport planning. Despite considerable literature available on the impacts of roads on wildlife elsewhere, acknowledgement and consideration of both fauna movement and fauna-sensitive road design were limited in road transportation planning research. More broadly, failure to achieve environmental objectives within transport planning occurred primarily as a result of competing sector interests (conflicted knowledge), different political objectives (political interest), and incorrect interpretation of policies. In essence, the results add new layers of understanding to the field of transportation planning and policy, in particular, the gaps in acknowledgement of wildlife movements and the limitations of current fauna-sensitive road design considered. Importantly, the review identified multiple ecological support tools available to transport policy- and decision-makers. Integration of these in road transportation projects could facilitate enhanced uptake and adoption of FSRD measures and thus foster improved sustainability of the transport network.

Measuring fear of crime during the past 25 years: A systematic quantitative literature review

The current study analyzes a sample of academic articles examining “fear of crime” and that were published in peer-reviewed journals during the past 25 years (n = 547). Using a systematic quantitative literature review method, results show that the fear of crime scholarship—and citations to it—increased significantly during this time, although most studies were undertaken in a handful of countries. Survey research remains the dominant data collection method that researchers use to study fear of crime, but more than 8-in-10 articles reviewed rely on multiple indicators to measure this complex construct. Additionally, most papers analyzed in the current study use measures that tap into the personal emotion dimension of fear but only 60% report information about the validity and/or reliability of these indicators. Recommendations for future quantitative research into fear of crime, based on current findings, are offered.

Emerging Associates of the Circular Economy: Analysing Interactions and Trends by a Mixed Methods Systematic Review

Circular Economy (CE) frameworks augmented multi-dimensional research, including definitions, principles, indicators, history, limitations, enablers, and allied issues. Rethinking the designing strategies requires the exploration of CE associates and their functioning as companions for amplification through multiple suggestions, highlighting the interactions with the overall CE system towards sustainability. This paper focuses on how CE literature concentrates on premeditated areas and solution approaches. A lack of deterministic manifestations critically limits the interpretation and application of CE concepts. The paper contributes to the CE theoretical and practical understanding by for the first time outlining the CE associates, their connotation, progression, positioning in architecture, and their current state. These associates support individualization of a CE concept. The coherently applied methodology attempts to reduce the knowledge gap by following a systematic quantitative literature review process to screen 76 articles and 122 CE definitions, referencing one decade of literature. Application of comprehensive morphological mining facilitated the extraction of CE associates and later analysis. On application of Bibliometric Analysis, Text Analysis, Semantic Analysis, and Relation Mapping to the literature, 49 associates emerged. They were further validated by application of Content Analysis and Weighted Average Priority Ranking on extracted article content and definitions for deriving the most prominent associates. Subsequently, Association Rules Data Mining and K-Means Clustering were deployed in exploring the relations, ranking, and significance of CE associates. The findings consistently state that business actions (virtualize, exchange); sustainability pillars (society); and R strategies (refuse, refill, and repurpose) are unexplored CE associates, whereas Business, Economics, Environment, Measurement, Product, Industry, Resource, System, Waste, and Recycle are the most explored associates of the CE ecosystem.
