Evaluation Technologies of Students' Reading Literacy and Communicative Competence Skills in Teaching Language

Life itself proves the effectiveness of using assessment to provide quality education to the young generation and to improve the educational process of the school. Therefore, the primary goal of teaching the language to be teaching in a communicative direction and make the students to improve their reading abilities as well. Communicative method is implemented through direct communication between the student and the teacher, forms the manner of speaking in a certain language, consists of the main system of main signs and principles characteristic of linguistic relations and methodological categories, combines effective ways of teaching the language, and practically uses the language as a means of communication. Communicative learning is formed in all forms of language activity - in choosing, speaking, reading, writing, because it ensures its implementation. The article deals also with the essence of students' reading literacy and communication skills development and assessment that is the of great importance of teaching them to extract the necessary information in continuous and non-continuous texts and use it in their own speaking activities. The concept of competence, functional literacy and reader literacy is given as well. The data characterizing the quality of test tasks, as well as the results of testing the reading literacy and communication skills of Bishkek school students and ways to improve them are presented. After a contextual introduction in this article, an example of educational mediation aimed at developing skills keys to lifelong learning and global skills for the 21st century through the reading of a certain number of selected texts are being presented.

The Eternal Path between Sound and Sense: Luciano Berio's Linguistic Exploration in Sinfonia and Coro

Abstract This study examines Luciano Berio's integration of twentieth-century linguistic and semiotic concepts in his works Sinfonia and Coro, focusing on the interplay between sound, meaning, and structure. It highlights Berio's exploration of the unconscious mind and the idea of ‘universality of experience', suggesting that humans may possess an innate musical ability similar to that of language. The article also discusses the concept of the ‘theatre of the mind', where Berio combines musical and textual elements to evoke images or situations for the audience's interpretation. Through an analysis of the third movement of Sinfonia and Coro, the study illustrates how Berio implicitly develops a system of signification that evokes meaning, showcasing both musical and textual productivity, along with the notion of ‘the infinite use of finite means’. This exploration contributes to understanding how twentieth-century linguistics and semiotics can inform contemporary music and signify meaning within it.

A Semiotic Approach to Social Meaning in Language

ABSTRACTLinguistic awareness is a complex and multi‐layered set of processes, existing in different forms of consciousness or knowledge. Social meaning resides in the ways that people perceive linguistic behavior as patterned and predictable, depending on their experience with, stereotypes about, and understanding of different groups. Ample evidence from experimental and ethnographic work indicates that sociolinguistic processes are actively engaged in the interactional construction of meaning. Furthermore, these processes hold material power over the world and how our positions in it are constructed. Theorizing these relationships is key to advancing research on sociolinguistic awareness and control and ultimately to understanding the complex linkages between language and social categorization, as evidenced in the contributions to this thematic issue. To illustrate these points, I present data from the Quechua–Spanish contact zone in Bolivia in which speakers report hearing differences in sounds that were not manipulated by the researchers in an experimental study. Second, I examine a case study in an educational setting in which Latinx students are categorized as English language learners based on racializing discourses and biased assessment tools. Both these examples demonstrate the importance of attending to listeners’ representations of socio + linguistic information, not only that which exists in a measurable way “in the world,” but that which is filled in by social expectation and pattern recognition at a sociocognitive level. I draw on semiotic theory, in particular the device of the interpretant, to argue that social information is perceived in dynamic and varied ways as part of the sign system that constitutes language. It is not something that is added on or filtered after linguistic information; indeed, the whole concept of “social vs. linguistic” is a false dichotomy that has led too many researchers astray. The interpretant incorporates elements of our theory of the world in our interpretation of signs and provides a third “leg” to the dualistic Saussurean sign–symbol relationship. That is, our perception of the relationship between sign and symbol is itself part of the sign. This recursive relationship helps us to access the sophisticated systems of social behavior and modeling that people contain and have knowledge of, information that not only assists them in interpreting but also plays a role in constructing meaning and content of socially laden signs. Social meaning resides in the ways that people perceive linguistic behavior as patterned and predictable, yet also dynamic and available for creative play. We cannot rely only on people's experience with, stereotypes about, and understanding of different groups but must also lean toward models that allow for creativity, innovation, and shifting hierarchies. These processes ultimately have material effects on our world and on the power structures that we inhabit and reproduce through our linguistic and intellectual practices.

Comparison of clinical variables and outcome of 2 natural equine herpesvirus myeloencephalopathy outbreaks induced by equine herpesvirus-1 A2254/N752 strain in sport horses.

Understanding of equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) myeloencephalopathy (EHM) is complicated by disparities among studies. Compare clinical findings and outcome in horses involved in 2 recent EHM outbreaks. Twenty-five and 10 horses affected during 2 natural EHM outbreaks were admitted to a veterinary teaching hospital (VTH) in 2021 and 2023, respectively. Data collected from the VTH and surveys completed by riders and horse owners were analyzed retrospectively. No risk factors associated with EHM development showed significant differences between the outbreaks; both outbreaks were caused by A2254/N752 strains. Treatments administered for EHM were not significantly different, whereas the duration was longer in 2021 for flunixin meglumine (P = .01) and dimethyl sulfoxide (P < .001). In 2021, more horses required hospitalization (P = .02), and fatality rate was 32%, whereas in 2023, no patient died. Hospitalization duration was longer in 2021 than in 2023 (P = .06) and 11.7% of horses from 2021 returned to competition within 6 months, whereas 100% in 2023 did (P < .001). Ataxia grade upon admission was equivalent in 2021 and 2023, but factors related to poor prognosis, such as simultaneous development of urinary and vascular complications, occurred in 2021 but not in 2023 (P = .01). Two EHM outbreaks caused by the A2254/N752 strain differed in disease severity. Urinary complications and systemic signs of vasculitis were important clinical variables associated with prognosis. Systemic complications in horses with EHM lead to a worse prognosis.

P-2278. CMV Viremia and Disease in Pediatric Liver Transplant Patients: a Multi-national Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Abstract Background Cytomegalovirus (CMV) viremia (Defined as a single detectable CMV RNA PCR) and disease (defined as CMV viremia with compatible systemic and/or localized signs and symptoms) remain a leading cause for mortality and morbidity in the pediatric solid organ transplant recipient. This systemic review aims at pooling data from the leading pediatric transplant institutions globally to identify the overall incidence of and risk factors associated with CMV viremia and/or disease in pediatric liver transplant recipients. PRISMA flow diagram Methods A systemic review of Pubmed and OVID databases was conducted since the inception to 01 April 2024. 24 articles were included from the USA, UK, South Africa, India, Japan, Finland, Canada, Turkey, Mexico, Thailand, Greece, Israel and Australia. A total of 1964 liver transplants were included. Median age was 50 months with 47.8% males. Data related to demographics, incidence, donor and recipient CMV serological classification (Donor (D) and Recipient (R)) and risk factors for CMV viremia/disease were extracted from the articles and subsequently analysed. This review was registered in Prospero: CRD42023477476 Results The Incidence of CMV viremia and disease in pediatric liver transplant patients in this review were 34% and 8.4% respectively, with statistically significant higher risk in the CMV D+/R+ category compared to other D/R serologic groups (P value &amp;lt; 0.05). , Additional risk factors identified for CMV viremia/disease included younger age, biliary atresia, high steroid doses, and rejection attacks. Conclusion This meta-analysis highlights that CMV viremia and disease post-liver transplantation are significant health concerns in pediatric populations. Identifying high risk populations for targeted CMV monitoring and potentially preemptive therapy to mitigate CMV-associated morbidity and mortality is a critical cornerstone of pediatric transplant medicine. Further studies are warranted to explore additional risk factors and to refine prevention and treatment strategies for CMV in pediatric transplant recipients. FASHION AS A FORM OF SELF-IDENTITY: A SEMIOTIC ANALYSIS OF MILLENNIALS' DRESS STYLE

Fashion plays a significant role in shaping self-identity, particularly among Indonesian millennials living in the digital and globalized era. This study aims to analyze the role of fashion as a visual communication medium in expressing millennials' self-identity through Roland Barthes' semiotic approach. Using a qualitative literature review method, data were collected from relevant secondary sources, such as journal articles, books, and dissertations. The analysis reveals that fashion functions as a system of signs containing denotative meanings, such as color or design, and connotative meanings reflecting personality, social status, or local culture. Social media platforms, such as Instagram and TikTok, serve as key arenas for millennials to showcase their fashion styles and construct their public identities. The findings affirm that fashion not only reflects but also shapes self-identity within the context of negotiating globalization and locality. This study contributes theoretically to semiotic studies and practically to the fashion and marketing industries. However, the absence of direct empirical data is a limitation, suggesting that future research should integrate field methods to deepen understanding of the interaction between fashion and millennial identity.

Religious Syncretism in Ossetian Festive Rituals

The article studies one of the aspects of Ossetian ethnic religion as an interesting ideological complex that was formed at the intersection of a number of diverse cultures of Antiquity, the Middle Ages and the modern era. Its relevance is due to the growing tendency to study the Ossetian ethnic religion as a unique “unmixed” object, and therefore the category of “syncretism”, when applied to it, often raises objections. This study, therefore, can be considered as the author’s interpretation, as an outside perspective of the cult, of which the author herself is not an adherent. The central focus of the study is the Ossetian holiday of the Yuletide cycle Bynaty-khitsau, associated in folk beliefs with demonic forces. Within the paper, the main elements of its ritual are identified and compared with similar elements in Christianity, Judaism and Zoroastrianism. This is the first time this problem is addressed in this manner. The methodological foundation of the study is the classification of historical types of religious syncretism, as proposed by E.V. Belyaeva. In addition, as the research is synchronic, it is carried out within the framework of the structuralism of C. Lévi-Strauss, which views all cultural systems (language, mythology, religion, art, customs, traditions) as sign systems.

Nocardiosis in domestic ferrets (Mustela putorius furo).

Nocardia spp are ubiquitous, gram-positive, variably acid-fast, branching and beaded filamentous, facultative intracellular bacteria that are resistant to phagocytosis and can cause localized or systemic disease in a variety of mammals, including humans, as well as in birds, fish and reptiles. Seventeen pet domestic ferrets (Mustela putorius furo) were diagnosed with nocardiosis by several methods including cytological evaluation, histopathology, Ziehl-Neelsen staining and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). All except two ferrets were 2 years old or older at the time of clinical presentation. Clinical findings included anorexia, weight loss, lymphadenomegaly, splenomegaly, masses/nodules in internal organs, hindlimb weakness or paresis, vomiting, dyspnoea, central nervous system signs, diarrhoea, abdominal pain and coughing. Anaemia, leucocytosis, neutrophilia, hypoalbuminaemia and hyperglobulinaemia were frequent. All ferrets had granulomatous or pyogranulomatous inflammation involving most commonly the lymph nodes, spleen, lungs, liver and adipose tissue. Intralesional acid-fast, branching filamentous bacilli were detected in 15 of 17 ferrets. PCR for the 16S rRNA gene of Nocardia spp was positive in 13 of 15 ferrets, including the two that were negative by acid-fast staining; of these two ferrets, one had intralesional coronavirus antigen. BLASTn analysis of eight sequences revealed six different Nocardia spp, including N.globerula, N.seriolae and N.donostiensis, that have rarely been reported to cause disease in humans and terrestrial animals. Antibiotic treatment (most commonly trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole alone or in combination with clarithromycin and marbofloxacin) was followed by a marked improvement in several patients, although relapses were frequent. Six ferrets had concurrent neoplasia as a potential predisposing factor. Nocardiosis should be included in the differential diagnosis of granulomatous/pyogranulomatous inflammation in ferrets, particularly in those over 2 years of age.

The Herring Cask and its Sign System as Witnesses to a Growing Fishing Industry in Fifteenth-century Flanders

ABSTRACT Archaeological research in the Low Countries regularly uncovers medieval herring casks. They usually show a wide range of marks and symbols. Herring casks are the bearers of a sign system that had relationships with other forms of writing that played a role in the management of a growing fishing industry and the food supply of the urbanised population. The signs on the casks are prominent witnesses to the important fourteenth- and fifteenth-century historical developments in the production and consumption of sea fish in the county of Flanders and the neighbouring regions. For historical research into the system of signs on the herring casks, I venture into the fields of not only maritime and economic history but also palaeography and semiotics, arguing that signs on the casks played a role in the scaling up and individualisation of the marine fishing economy and the conflict management it required.

Remote monitoring of vital signs: pulse, temperature, and oxygen saturation using cloud computing

Telemedicine has gained significant relevance by allowing patients to be attended to at any time and place, reducing the cost and time of medical care. Therefore, this research aimed at the development of a remote monitoring system for vital signs using cloud computing. Through surveys and expert input, specific system requirements were identified. The chosen sensors, MAX30102 and MLX90614, accurately captured pulse, oxygen saturation, and body temperature. The Arduino Mega-Embedded board facilitated data acquisition, while the Raspberry Pi Zero W enabled remote data transmission. The ThingSpeak platform was used for communication, and the system architecture was established through hardware and software tests. The system’s functionality was verified through expert judgment and statistical tests, showing no significant differences compared to commercial equipment. The remote sampling time for vital sign data was approximately 117 seconds. Overall, this study successfully implemented a robust and efficient remote monitoring system for patients undergoing home treatment.

Cutaneous T-cell lymphoma of the mycosis fungoides type: report of case series

Cutaneous T-cell lymphomas represent a heterogeneous group of lymphoproliferative diseases characterized by skin infiltration by mature malignant T cells. More than 40% of cutaneous T-cell lymphomas are represented by mycosis fungoides. As they present non-specific cutaneous manifestations, they are often underdiagnosed. This article reports four cases of mycosis fungoides with different subtypes treated by a multidisciplinary team, highlighting aspects related to clinical heterogeneity and diagnostic, therapeutic and differential diagnostic challenges, followed by a brief review of the literature. The cases described demonstrate the heterogeneity of cutaneous and systemic clinical signs, with presentations that present a significant diagnostic challenge due to other diseases with similar manifestations, especially for non-specialist physicians in basic healthcare units. Mycosis fungoides continues to be a problematic diagnosis, as the cases described had varied presentations and numerous inconclusive biopsies. Low clinical suspicion and technical limitations in the analysis of biopsies of skin lesions were the main factors implicated. It is hoped that this series of cases will bring a better understanding of the diagnostic aspects of this disease.

CULTURAL ARCHAEOLOGY: TEXT – CODE – SYSTEM OF REPETITIONS AND KEY-NAMES

Various interdisciplinary studies, linking approaches of culturology and archaeology, allow to consider one of the productive directions within this convergence, called culturology of archeology. This direction focuses on the study of archaeological memorials and texts that can act as cultural phenomena, which allows to comprehensively study the nature of such phenomena, their structure, laws of development and functioning in modern society. The article aims to clarify the content of this interdisciplinary area, highlight its research potential. Considering «Arkaim» as a text, the author analyzes the structure of the famous archaeological monument with the help of the “filled” term «cultural code». The author identifies a repeating code, semantic code, narrative code and descriptive code. Their distinguishing feature is the high degree «valence» of internal signs. The mechanism of functioning of these codes with a system of signs is described in the example of interaction of texts G.B. Zdanovich and poet M.P. Nikulina about «Arkaim». This is seen as the key reason for a great variety of interpretations of modern archaeological sites and text. It is concluded that this property of «archaeological» text can be perceived, on the one hand, as a negative factor, and on the other, to act as a «mirror» in which important processes taking place in modern society and culture are reflected.

The plot of the Yuolen Nyuryuye olonkho in the light of the spatial organization of the epic universe

This article is devoted to the study of the plot: a fundamental and general category of folklore and literary studies. The relevance of addressing the topic of the epic plot, as well as the motifs that construct it, is caused by the insufficient study of the historical transformation of the Yakut epic olonkho, on the one hand, and on the other – the need for an in-depth study of the spatial organization of the olonkho world, which can lead to the explication of the patterns (invariants) of plot composition, to the definition of the principles of plot composition of olonkho. The novelty of the study is the focus of the study through the prism of the relationships of motifs along the syntagmatic horizontal in the course of the “plot development” of the olonkho text of Yuyolen Nyuryue. The aim of the work is to conduct a structural and semantic analysis of the plot-significant motifs of the olonkho text of Yuyolen Nyuryue in the light of the dynamics of the epic space. The work uses structural and semantic, semiotic, functional analysis, methods of review, description and generalization. The roles of spatial loci in the plot structure of the olonkho text are designated. The functions of plot motifs in the syntagmatics of the epic text are highlighted. The order of the coupling of plot motifs in a holistic event sequence is shown. The presence of a condensed, unexpressed spatial element in the name of the hero's bride is noted. The author's innovation of the epicteller Mikhail Sorov is emphasized in the form of introducing repetitive digressions and narratives in the plot composition of the olonkho. The author comes to the conclusion that although the traditional plot-compositional structure is not violated, in the olonkho of Yuyolen Nyuryue there is a simplification of the plot line through the loss of some plot elements, truncations of the course of implementation of the vertical deployment of the coordinates of the epic space, contaminations (connections) of motifs, narrowing of epithetics in poetics and symbolism in the sign system of olonkho. This circumstance indicates the prospects for further research of olonkho texts of the Soviet and post-Soviet periods with the actualization of the formulation of problems of the historical dynamics of the motifs of the Yakut olonkho in the perspective of structure, semantics, function, poetics, semiotics.

Evaluation of dentists’ clinical practices and antibiotic use in managing endodontic emergencies in Karachi, Pakistan: a cross-sectional survey

BackgroundEndodontic emergencies, often presented as acute pain or swelling, constitute a substantial challenge in dental practice. While effective management emphasizes prompt intervention, antibiotics are typically indicated only when systemic signs and symptoms are present. There is limited research exists on evaluating the knowledge and clinical approach of dental practitioners in managing endodontic emergencies from our region of the world. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate dentists' knowledge, attitude, and practices regarding clinical management and the prescription of antibiotics in endodontic emergency cases.Materials and methodsA web-based questionnaire was distributed to working dentists in secondary and tertiary care hospitals and clinics. Eligible participants included dental practitioners, postgraduate trainees, and consultants. The questionnaire included demographic information and inquiries about endodontic emergency treatment approaches, antibiotic prescribing habits, and awareness of guidelines. Statistical analysis was performed Stata software version 17 (StataCorp, College Station, Texas, USA), employing a χ2 test.ResultsOf the 527 dentists approached, 409 completed the survey (response rate: 77.6%). The majority of respondents were female (68%) and general dental practitioners (60.32%) with up to 5 years of experience (80.93%). Survey findings highlighted varied treatment approaches, favoring root canal treatment in multiple visits for cases of both irreversible pulpitis (73.59%) as well as with necrotic pulps/periapical lesions (79.95%). Similarly, 45.48% and 37.9% of the respondents favored pulpectomy combined with analgesics and antibiotics in managing irreversible pulpitis and acute apical periodontitis respectively. Moreover, antibiotics were frequently prescribed for acute apical abscess, with amoxicillin-clavulanate being the most common choice (83.6%). Most practitioners (69%) recommended a minimum of 5-day antibiotic course.ConclusionsThis study highlights Pakistani dentists' preferences in managing endodontic emergencies and prescribing antibiotics. Despite awareness of guidelines and the consequences of overuse, there's a tendency towards antibiotic overprescription, indicating a need for educational interventions to promote rational antibiotic use and mitigate antibiotic resistance.

Introduction. System management is based on the recognition of management objects as integral groups. The essence of the regulatory influence of the state on the activities of a bank is considered as a way to change project standards and current indicators of its financial stability with the justification of organizational measures to ensure stable functioning and development. Problem Statement. System management of an integral group involves a systemic analysis of the management object as a single whole with the determination of the properties and relationships of the system components: input, process, output, goal, direct and feedback, and limitations. The purpose is to determine the market characteristics of the regulatory influence of the state on the activities of banks as a category of system management, its content, metrology, and signs of complexity. Methods. The conceptual provisions of system analysis, methods of clarifying the content, properties of integrity, self-organization and stability of the system, their structuring, as well as program-targeted design were used. Results. Market characteristics were systematized and the social status of the state&amp;apos;s regulatory influence on the activities of banks as a category of systemic management was substantiated. The integrity of the state&amp;apos;scomplex regulatory influence on the activities of banks was substantiated by means of a “three-story” classification of its components and the results of their interaction. Conclusions. The use of the conceptual provisions of systems theory to clarify the nature of the state&amp;apos;s regulatory influence on the activities of banks revealed the processes of its formation as a category of systemic management. The metrology of such influence consists in monitoring and comparative assessments of: indicators of financial stability and stability of banks with the economic standards of the NBU; leading indicators of measuring the financial condition and probability of bankruptcy of banks; dynamics of the market value of banks as a target criterion of complex regulatory influence.

George Pachymeres’ Walking as a Problem

Introduction. In George Pachymeres’ historical work, “walking” turns out to be synonymous with a certain political situation. Certainly, the conflict between Michael VIII and Patriarch Arsenius is a peculiar nerve of the Byzantine historian’s historical narrative, and the Arsenite controversy is a significant problem for the Byzantine state, society, and church. In this sense, the “insignificant” “walk” seems to be a fairly accurate metaphor for the emerging political conflict, expressing certain power relations. Such a walk is nothing less than “the will to power in a discursive state.” In other words, Pachymeres’ walking man resolves issues of power by his very movement. Methods and materials. Walking as an act of everyday life has been scrutinized in contemporary cultural studies literature. From a structuralist perspective, to walk is to “speak.” Walk, in this sense, is a whole implicit sign system, with its own signs, structure, rhythm, and context. Walking turns out to be an important social gesture. In this sense, the tired but still walking patriarch of Nicaea, Arsenius the Autorianus (c. 1200–1273), should be properly understood. Analysis. This “walking” is an exceptionally vivid gesture (especially vivid in that the patriarch, not a young man at all, does not stop in his persistence even at night). Before us is not just a personal offense of Arsenius, a man who was deceived and betrayed. It is worth noting that Arsenius himself was regent under John Lascaris, and his inert patriarchal administration, actively issuing documents confirming the privileges of the monasteries, was the only legitimate authority. Such a movement of Arsenius was not so much a protest against the removal of the minor John Laskaris and usurpation of power by Michael VIII but also a defense of his authority. Results. The walking patriarch in George Pachymeres is certainly a very personal moment in the narrative. In fact, an ancient hero appears before us, challenging Fate (and Michael VIII Palaeologus, according to Pachymeres, is simply the evil Rock of the Empire) without hope of victory, where the very tragedy of the situation only emphasizes its heroism and exclusivity.

Predictive Factors for Hearing Loss in Congenital Cytomegalovirus Infection.

The present study aims to identify potential predictive factors for developing sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) in individuals with congenital Cytomegalovirus (cCMV) infection. A retrospective study was performed on 50 subjects with cCMV infection (symptomatic and asymptomatic), followed at the Audiology Service of Sant'Anna Hospital (University Hospital of Ferrara). The following data were analyzed: the type of maternal Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection (primary versus non-primary), time of in utero infection, systemic signs and symptoms or laboratory test anomalies due to cCMV infection, and signs and symptoms of central nervous system (CNS) involvement at birth. In particular, brain ultrasonography and encephalic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were evaluated, searching for possible links between imaging findings and SNHL. The statistical analysis showed a significantly higher risk of developing SNHL in subjects with signs and symptoms of CNS involvement at birth (p = 0.009 *). The presence of brain MRI abnormalities significantly influenced the onset of SNHL in patients with symptomatic cCMV infection (p = 0.012 *). Brain ultrasonography, the type of maternal CMV infection, systemic signs/symptoms and laboratory test anomalies at birth, and sex resulted in nonsignificant correlations in the analysis. The presence of neurological symptoms at birth and of detectable abnormalities in brain MRI are predictors of SNHL developing in symptomatic cCMV infection. Further investigation on this topic is necessary.

The author focuses on the functions of retransmitting and mobilizing individual memory performed by souvenirs and examines their role in the system of signs and symbols in ethnographic tourism.
