The Green Synthesis of Nanostructured Silicon Carbides (SiCs) from Sugarcane Bagasse Ash (SCBA) as Anodes in Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion) Batteries: A Review Paper

Silicon is a promising anode material for the increased performance of lithium-ion batteries because of its high elemental composition and specific capacity. The application of silicon on a commercial scale is restricted due to the limitation of volume expansion. Silicon is also expensive, making it difficult for large-scale commercialisation. Different methods were used to address these issues, including a sintering process and the sol–gel method, to form silicon carbide (SiC), a hard chemical compound containing silicon and carbon. The silicon carbide anode not only acts as a buffer for volume expansion but also allows for better infiltration of the electrolyte, increasing charge and discharge capacity in the battery. Like silicon, silicon carbides can be costly. The development of renewable energy systems is very important, especially in the development of energy storage systems that are not only efficient but also cost-friendly. The cost of the energy storage devices is lowered, making them easily accessible. Silicon carbides can be synthesised from sugarcane, which is the fibrous waste that remains after juice extraction. This could be beneficial, as we could never run out of such a resource, and it offers low carbon with a high surface area. Silicon carbides can be synthesised by carbothermal reduction of silica from sugarcane bagasse. This review provides a comprehensive understanding of silicon carbides and synthetic processes. The innovative use of waste to synthesise materials would reduce costs and comply with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 7 (affordable and clean energy) and 13 (climate action).

Synthetic Strategies of Highly Bioactive Scaffold Bis(indolyl)methane Under Greener Condition- A Comprehensive Review.

Bis(indolyl)Methanes are a major class of heterocycles with considerable promise for technological and biological applications and being fluorescent active as well. Considering the extensive quantity of work on various synthetic techniques, the objective of this study is to measure the previous and current status of research studies related to different types of Bis(indolyl)methane (BIM) derivatives. Currently, research is focused on developing green synthetic strategies for dependable, sustainable and environmentally friendly synthetic processes. The present literature describes the formation of BIM moieties starting from suitable precursors using conventional reaction procedures, as well as reactions mediated by microwaves, ultrasounds, organocatalysts, transition metal catalysts, metal-free ionic liquid catalysts, and other environmentally friendly reaction protocols. The current review discusses the explosive development of different environmentally friendly synthesis routes for bis(indolyl)methane and its analogues during the past few decades. Moreover, this study includes the biological activities such as antibacterial, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, etc., of BIM derivatives, which have been investigated in recent years.

The amount of DNA and RNA in primary cancer cells and their metastases

Considering the significant impact of oncopathology on global morbidity and mortality, as well as changes in its prevalence and typology, research into the molecular-genetic mechanisms of oncogenesis and metastasis, particularly the role of nucleic acids, becomes crucial. The aim of this study is to determine the content of DNA and RNA in cells of primary cancer and its metastases through microspectrophotometric analysis of malignant cells collected from 30 patients with primary and metastatic oncological processes. The following methods were employed: microspectrophotometric analysis using the automated complex “Protva-PM11-DVK-3m,” staining of histological specimens with halo cyanin-chrome alum, the discrete statistics method, frequency and cluster analysis, and the bibliographic method. Changes in the concentration of nucleic acids in the cells of primary and metastatic tumors were identified during the study. The changes did not always correlate with each other, indicating morphofunctional polymorphism in tumor cell populations. A trend towards a decrease in nuclear RNA concentration and an increase in cytoplasmic RNA concentration in metastases were observed, suggesting alterations in metabolic and synthetic processes in cells and a decrease in their differentiation degree.

Hexa‐atom Pt Catalyst Fabricated by a Ligand Engineering Strategy for Efficient Hydrogen Oxidation Reaction

AbstractAtomically precise supported nanocluster catalysts (APSNCs), which feature exact atomic composition, well‐defined structures, and unique catalytic properties, offer an exceptional platform for understanding the structure‐performance relationship at the atomic level. However, fabricating APSNCs with precisely controlled and uniform metal atom numbers, as well as maintaining a stable structure, remains a significant challenge due to uncontrollable dispersion and easy aggregation during synthetic and catalytic processes. Herein, we developed an effective ligand engineering strategy to construct a Pt6 nanocluster catalyst stabilized on oxidized carbon nanotubes (Pt6/OCNT). The structural analysis revealed that Pt6 nanoclusters in Pt6/OCNT were fully exposed and exhibited a planar structure. Furthermore, the obtained Pt6/OCNT exhibited outstanding acidic HOR performances with a high mass activity of 18.37 A ⋅ mgpt−1 along with excellent stability during a 24 h constant operation and good CO tolerance, surpassing those of the commercial Pt/C. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrated that the unique geometric and electronic structures of Pt6 nanoclusters on OCNT altered the hydrogen adsorption energies on catalytic sites and thus lowered the HOR theoretical overpotential. This work presents a new prospect for designing and synthesizing advanced APSNCs for efficient energy electrocatalysis.

A Strategic Synthesis of Orange Waste-Derived Porous Carbon via a Freeze-Drying Method: Morphological Characterization and Cytocompatibility Evaluation.

Porous carbon materials from food waste have gained growing interest worldwide for multiple applications due to their natural abundance and the sustainability of the raw materials and the cost-effective synthetic processing. Herein, orange waste-derived porous carbon (OWPC) was developed through a freeze-drying method to prevent the demolition of the original biomass structure and then was pyrolyzed to create a large number of micro, meso and macro pores. The novelty of this work lies in the fact of using the macro-channels of the orange waste in order to create a macroporous network via the freeze-drying method which remains after the pyrolysis steps and creates space for the development of different types of porous in the micro and meso scale in a controlled way. The results showed the successful preparation of a porous carbon material with a high specific surface area of 644 m2 g-1 without any physical or chemical activation. The material's cytocompatibility was also investigated against a fibroblast cell line (NIH/3T3 cells). OWPC triggered a mild intracellular reactive oxygen species production without initiating apoptosis or severely affecting cell proliferation and survival. The combination of their physicochemical characteristics and high cytocompatibility renders them promising materials for further use in biomedical and pharmaceutical applications.

Investigation of the Optimal Phosphine for Improved Electrochemical Peptide Synthesis

Peptides have been expected to be medicines with higher specificity and fewer side effects than conventional medicines. However, a longstanding problem that the huge amount of waste is produced in synthetic process is not resolved. One of the causes is use of coupling reagents. Although they facilitate efficient peptide bond formation, byproducts lead to accumulation of waste. To address the issue, we developed electrochemical peptide synthesis using triphenylphosphine (Ph3P) as a coupling reagent. Anodic oxidation of Ph3P generates radical cation to activate carboxylic acids and promote peptide bond formation, producing triphenylphosphine oxide (Ph3PO). Since the reduction of Ph3PO to Ph3P is achieved in various ways, Ph3P have a potential to be a recyclable coupling reagent, which would be one of the solutions. Actually, we succeeded in development of an electrochemical peptide synthesis applicable to all of canonical amino acids and recovering method of Ph3PO. Nevertheless, we found that this method is difficult to use for highly sterically hindered amino acids. To improve the reaction efficiency, we examined various phosphine derivatives instead of Ph3P. We will present our recent improvement of the electrochemical peptide synthesis and nature of phosphine radical cations in detail.

(Invited) Electrocatalysts for the Oxygen Reduction Reaction and the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction Based on “Core-Shell”, “PGM-Free” Carbon Nitride Systems

The key electrochemical processes at the heart of the “hydrogen economy” involve: (i) the recombination of hydrogen and oxygen to form water in fuel cells (FCs); and (ii) the splitting of water to yield hydrogen and oxygen in water electrolyzers (ELs). Depending on the particular device taken under consideration, such processes typically occur either in a highly acidic environment (e.g., in proton-exchange membrane fuel cells, PEMFCs, and in proton-exchange membrane electrolyzers, PEMELs) or in strongly alkaline conditions (e.g., in anion-exchange membrane fuel cells, AEMFCs; and in anion-exchange membrane electrolyzers, AEMELs). In both cases, such processes require suitable electrocatalysts (ECs) to minimize overpotentials and achieve a performance and durability level compatible with applications. State-of-the-art ECs for both FCs and ELs typically suffer from important drawbacks such as: (i) high overpotentials; (ii) a poor durability; and (iii) a high loading of strategic elements, with a particular reference to platinum-group metals (PGMs); correspondingly, significant concerns are raised due to potential supply bottlenecks.In this work, a new family of “PGM-free” ECs is proposed, especially targeted to promote the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in either/both the acidic and the alkaline environment. The ECs are obtained by means of a multi-step synthetic process [1]. In the first step a precursor is prepared by coupling a carbon black support with a hybrid inorganic-organic macromolecular system consisting of an organic binder coordinating: (i) a first-row transition metal (e.g., Fe) meant to act as the “catalyst”; and (ii) Sn, playing the role of “co-catalyst”. Subsequently the precursor undergoes a multi-step pyrolysis process followed by suitable chemical treatments meant to remove labile species and reaction byproducts, yielding the final EC. Optionally, the EC may be coupled with an additional aliquot of the hybrid-inorganic precursor. In this case, further pyrolysis/chemical treatment steps are carried out to obtain the final product.The final “PGM-free” ECs proposed herein exhibit a “core-shell” morphology. The carbon black “core” is covered by a carbon nitride “shell” stabilizing the active sites based on the “catalyst” and the “co-catalyst” into C- and N- “coordination nests”. The ECs undergo an extensive physicochemical characterization, meant to determine: (i) the chemical composition, both in the bulk and on the surface (adopting analytical techniques such as ICP-AES, CHNS microanalysis, EDX and NAP-XPS); (ii) the morphology (by means of UHR-SEM); (iii) the porosimetric features (by nitrogen and water physisorption studies); and (iv) the structure (e.g., through wide-angle X-ray diffraction). The kinetics and reaction mechanism of the proposed ECs in the ORR and HER are determined by advanced electroanalytical techniques, with a particular reference to cyclic voltammetry with the thin-film rotating ring-disk electrode (CV-TF-RRDE). The synthetic parameters are finally correlated with the results of the physicochemical and the electrochemical characterization, shedding light on the most promising avenues to guide the preparation of further ECs exhibiting improved performance and durability, suitable for implementation in next-generation FCs and ELs.

(Invited) Realizing the Lowest Bandgap and Exciton Binding Energy in a Two-Dimensional Lead Halide System

3-dimensional hybrid halide perovskites have been intensely researched because of their extraordinary optoelectronic properties with spectacular quantum efficiencies arising primarily from their suitable bandgaps to harvest the solar spectrum, low excitonic binding energies, and low-cost synthetic processes. However, stabilizing these materials under real-life operating conditions has proven to be a challenge, leading to extensive explorations of lower dimensional analogous hybrid halide materials that are often more stable, though generally having considerably higher bandgaps and excitonic binding energies. I shall present some of our investigations leading to the synthesis of a highly moisture-stable 2-dimensional hybrid lead halide material with the lowest bandgap and exciton binding energy within this class of compounds.1 I shall detail the origin of such a low bandgap and exciton binding energy, identifying the most critical control parameters to determine these properties. Synthesis, characterization, and dyeing performance of Novel Bisazo disperse dyes: A combined spectroscopic and computational study

Disperse dyes are a versatile class of coloring agents with applications spanning textiles to advanced optical materials. This study details the synthesis and spectroscopic characterization of innovative bisazo disperse dyes, which are derived from benzidine-based compounds. The synthetic process involves the use of two distinct couplers, namely acetylacetone and ethyl acetoacetate. The reaction of these couplers with benzidine derivatives yields two specific bisazo dyes: diethyl 2,2′-(2,2′-([1,1′-biphenyl]-4,4′-diyl)bis(hydrazin-2-yl-1-ylidene))bis(3-oxobutanoate) 3 and 3,3′-(2,2′-([1,1′-biphenyl]-4,4′-diyl)bis(hydrazin-2-yl-1-ylidene))bis(pentane-2,4‑dione) 4. The reaction of these azo compounds with hydrazine and phenylhydrazine results in the formation of azo dyes that incorporate a pyrazole ring 5–7. All the disperse azo compounds were characterized and identified through various spectroscopic methods, including UV-visible, FT-IR, NMR (both 1H and 13C), and elemental analysis. Examining the UV–vis profiles of the disperse dyes 3–7 revealed the maximum absorbance values (λmax) were affected by the change of the coupler moieties and more significant sensitivity to changes in pH. The polyester fabric (PE-F) was dyed by disperse dyes 3–7 in presence of the dispersing agent DYEWELL-002 and the fastness data were measured according to the standard procedures. The color strength (K S-1) and exhaustion (%E) values of the dyed fabrics are calculated and discussed. The synthesised bisazo dyes were subjected to computational calculations using DFT with B3LYP method and 6–31G(d,p) basis set to examine the dyeing efficiencies and anticipate the mechanism of the dyeing process. The computational analyses assessed the dipole moment, chemical reactivity descriptors and molecular electrostatic potential. Analysis of the chemical descriptor parameters revealed that the highest dyeing strength was exhibited by dye 3, as indicated by the ELUMO, EHOMO, ∆E, S, and η parameters, while dye 6 had the highest dyeing strength based on the values of χ and µ parameters.

Green synthesis of magnetite iron oxide nanoparticles using Azadirachta indica leaf extract loaded on reduced graphene oxide and degradation of methylene blue

In the current arena, new-generation functional nanomaterials are the key players for smart solutions and applications including environmental decontamination of pollutants. Among the plethora of new-generation nanomaterials, graphene-based nanomaterials and nanocomposites are in the driving seat surpassing their counterparts due to their unique physicochemical characteristics and superior surface chemistry. The purpose of the present research was to synthesize and characterize magnetite iron oxide/reduced graphene oxide nanocomposites (FeNPs/rGO) via a green approach and test its application in the degradation of methylene blue. The modified Hummer's protocol was adopted to synthesize graphene oxide (GO) through a chemical exfoliation approach using a graphitic route. Leaf extract of Azadirachta indica was used as a green reducing agent to reduce GO into reduced graphene oxide (rGO). Then, using the green deposition approach and Azadirachta indica leaf extract, a nanocomposite comprising magnetite iron oxides and reduced graphene oxide i.e., FeNPs/rGO was synthesized. During the synthesis of functionalized FeNPs/rGO, Azadirachta indica leaf extract acted as a reducing, capping, and stabilizing agent. The final synthesized materials were characterized and analyzed using an array of techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM)-energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis (EDX), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction analysis, and UV–visible spectrophotometry. The UV–visible spectrum was used to evaluate the optical characteristics and band gap. Using the FT-IR spectrum, functional groupings were identified in the synthesized graphene-based nanomaterials and nanocomposites. The morphology and elemental analysis of nanomaterials and nanocomposites synthesized via the green deposition process were investigated using SEM–EDX. The GO, rGO, FeNPs, and FeNPs/rGO showed maximum absorption at 232, 265, 395, and 405 nm, respectively. FTIR spectrum showed different functional groups (OH, COOH, C=O), C–O–C) modifying material surfaces. Based on Debye Sherrer's equation, the mean calculated particle size of all synthesized materials was < 100 nm (GO = 60–80, rGO = 90–95, FeNPs = 70–90, Fe/GO = 40–60, and Fe/rGO = 80–85 nm). Graphene-based nanomaterials displayed rough surfaces with clustered and spherical shapes and EDX analysis confirmed the presence of both iron and oxygen in all the nanocomposites. The final nanocomposites produced via the synthetic process degraded approximately 74% of methylene blue. Based on the results, it is plausible to conclude that synthesized FeNPs/rGO nanocomposites can also be used as a potential photocatalyst degrader for other different dye pollutants due to their lower band gap.

Biocide-encapsulated core–shell polymer microspheres: A novel approach for preparing long-lasting antimicrobial coatings

Antimicrobial coatings play a crucial role in combating pathogenic microorganisms. However, developing long-lasting antimicrobial coatings presents substantial challenges. In this study, we developed a robust method for fabricating durable antimicrobial coatings using crosslinked, biocide-encapsulated core–shell polymer microspheres. These microspheres were prepared by emulsion polymerization, facilitating simultaneous synthesis and biocide loading. Designed with a hydrophilic shell and a hydrophobic core, the microspheres predominantly stored the hydrophobic biocides within the core, thus reducing the biocide concentration at the shell. This design, which is governed by Fickian diffusion, substantially slowed the rate of biocide migration from the shell to the external environment, thereby enhancing the coating's antimicrobial longevity. The synthetic process for these biocide-encapsulated microspheres was optimized to encapsulate biocides with a Log P range of 1–3, achieving an encapsulation efficiency exceeding 85 % for all tested biocides. Specifically, microspheres containing N-butyl-1,2-benzisothiazolin-3-one (BBIT) were used to develop an antimicrobial coating. The coating can be applied to various substrates, including glass, metal, wood, ceramics, and plastics. It exhibits excellent hardness, adhesion, mechanical strength, and solvent resistance on these surfaces. Antimicrobial tests and release analyses demonstrated that the coating maintains high biological activity for at least 10 months, effectively inhibiting bacterial and fungal growth. The release behavior of the coating adhered to the Peppas–Sahlin model, with diffusion as the predominant mechanism. The model predicted an antimicrobial retention rate of over 66 % after 1 year, confirming its sustained antimicrobial effectiveness.

Carbon-based nanomaterials: synthesis, types and fuel applications: a mini-review

Abstract Carbon is one of the most abundant minerals in the universe. The world’s energy needs are being unmet due to the exponential rise in population. Since its inception 20 years ago, carbon and its allotropes, including fullerenes, carbon nanotubes, and graphene, have been marketed as potential energy storage and generation materials. By solving important issues like accumulation and inadequate thermodynamic compatibility, carbon fiber, expanded graphite, and carbon nanotubes are promising functional materials that can be used to improve the performance of bipolar plates further. There are several potential uses for carbon-based nanomaterials (CBNMs) in the energy area. This mini-review provides an overview of the synthetic routes employed for producing CBNMs, categorizing them based on their types, elucidating their diverse applications in fuel energy systems, and emphasising the uses of CBNMs in energy. The advantages and disadvantages of several synthetic processes have been examined and compared. The types of CBNMs, like carbon nanotubes, graphene, carbon dots, and fullerenes, are explored in terms of their unique structural properties and fabrication methods. Furthermore, the utilization of CBNMs in fuel energy systems, such as fuel cells, energy storage devices, and catalysis, is comprehensively reviewed.

Reinforcement prompting for financial synthetic data generation

The emergence of Large Language Models (LLMs) has unlocked unprecedented potential for comprehending and generating human-like text, fueling advances in the finance domain – a tool that can shape investment strategies and market predictions. Nevertheless, challenges stemming from the necessity for extensive labeled data and the imperative for data privacy remain. The generation of high-quality synthetic data emerges as a promising avenue to circumvent these issues. In this paper, we introduce a novel methodology, named “Reinforcement Prompting”, to address these challenges. Our strategy employs a policy network as a Selector to generate prompts, and an LLM as an Executor to produce financial synthetic data. This synthetic data generation process preserves data privacy and mitigates the dependency on real-world labeled datasets. We validate the effectiveness of our approach through experimental evaluations. Our results indicate that models trained on synthetic data generated via our approach exhibit competitive performance when compared to those trained on actual financial data, thereby bridging the performance gap. This research provides a novel solution to the challenges of data privacy and labeled data scarcity in financial sentiment analysis, offering considerable advancement in the field of financial machine learning.

Abstract Tu088: Fibroblast Activation, Collagen Secretion, and Migration Occurs Independently of Has2 Expression

Background: Hyaluronan (HA) accumulates after tissue injury and may regulate the wound-healing process. We found that HA is increased in and around the scar following myocardial infarction (MI). Fibroblasts are the main producers of the collagen that comprises the scar, and we have shown that they are responsible for HA accumulation. Given that these two extraordinarily high-volume synthetic processes occur in the same place and simultaneously, we queried whether alterations in Has2 -dependent HA synthesis impacted collagen secretion and other fibroblast functions. Goal: To determine the impact of HA synthesis on fibroblast function. Methods and Results: We isolated cardiac fibroblasts from Has2 fl/fl mice and treated with Cre adenovirus to delete Has2 expression or Has2 adenovirus to overexpress Has2. We assessed cell number and found no differences when Has2 was deleted or overexpressed in both naïve fibroblasts (n=6); activation with TGF-b did not change this response . We used a scratch assay to assess migration and found no change between treatments in naïve fibroblasts (n=6). Hydroxyproline assessment of deposited collagen and immunoblotting for soluble collagen secretion in the media indicated no differences between treatments in naïve fibroblasts (n=3). Conclusion: Genetic manipulation of HA production did not impact proliferation, migration, or collagen secretion in fibroblasts. Considering the enormous metabolic requirement of fibroblasts to produce HA and collagen, these results suggest that the regulation of these processes may be distinct or that the substrate is not limiting in our experimental conditions. In the intact heart, substrate could become limiting and a relationship between these two biosynthetic processes may emerge

Local pH variability scenario: Prebiotic synthesis of cyclic dipeptides via prolinamide on the Hadean Earth

Small pools near early volcanoes are recognized as optimal field for the origin of life. However, the significance of pH variability in the polymerization of biomolecules has been undervalued. Within a simulated “warm little pond,” our study illustrates that a pH variability scenario provides an effective and innovative route for the generation of cyclic dipeptides from prolinamide and free amino acids, obviating the necessity for a catalyst. Subsequent investigations reveal the influential roles of activator (trimetaphosphate, abbreviated as P3m), clay minerals such as montmorillonite, calcite, magnetite, and metal ions including Ca2+, Mg2+, Mn2+, which might have been prevalent in the early Earth's environmental conditions, in facilitating this prebiotic synthetic process. In conclusion, this research provides valuable insights into the possible mechanisms of prebiotic cyclic peptide synthesis, which is a crucial step in understanding the origin of life. The proposed pH variability model offers a plausible explanation for how these peptides could have formed under early Earth conditions.

Identification of TEFM as a potential therapeutic target for LUAD treatment

BackgroundMolecularly targeted therapies have recently become a hotspot in the treatment of LUAD, with ongoing efforts to identify new effective targets due to individual variability. Among these potential targets, the mitochondrial transcription elongation factor (TEFM) stands out as a crucial molecule involved in mitochondrial synthetic transcriptional processing. Dysregulation of TEFM has been implicated in the development of various diseases; however, its specific role in LUAD remains unclear.MethodsWe conducted a comprehensive analysis of TEFM expression in LUAD, leveraging data from the TCGA database. Subsequently, we validated these findings using clinical specimens obtained from the First Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University, employing western blotting and qRT-PCR techniques. Further experimental validation was performed through the transfection of cells with TEFM overexpression, knockdown, and knockout lentiviruses. The effects of TEFM on LUAD were evaluated both in vitro and in vivo using a range of assays, including CCK-8, colony formation, EdU incorporation, Transwell migration, Tunel assay, flow cytometry, JC-1 staining, and xenograft tumour models.ResultsOur investigation uncovered that TEFM exhibited elevated expression levels in LUAD and exhibited co-localization with mitochondria. Overexpression of TEFM facilitated malignant processes in LUAD cells, whereas its silencing notably curbed these behaviors and induced mitochondrial depolarization, along with ROS production, culminating in apoptosis. Moreover, the absence of TEFM substantially influenced the expression of mitochondrial transcripts and respiratory chain complexes. Results from nude mouse xenograft tumors further validated that inhibiting TEFM expression markedly hindered tumor growth.ConclusionTEFM promotes LUAD malignant progression through the EMT pathway and determines apoptosis by affecting the expression of mitochondrial transcripts and respiratory chain complexes, providing a new therapeutic direction for LUAD-targeted therapy.Graphical
