Humidity-responsive actuators of synthesized graphene oxide/gelatin composite hydrogels: Effect of oxidation degree of graphene oxide

In this study, graphene oxide (GO) was prepared for humidity-responsive actuator application. GO has outstanding properties such as single-atom thickness, abundant oxygen, water solubility, and good moisture absorption. GO was prepared at various graphite:potassium permanganate (oxidizer) ratios (1:1, 1:2, 1:3, and 1:4; the corresponding structures are denoted as GO1, GO2, GO3, and GO4, respectively). The GO particles synthesized according to the effect of the oxidizer ratio were characterized to elucidate the internal morphology and humidity response. The defects and disorders and morphological properties of the GO particles were characterized by Raman spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), respectively. To study the humidity-responsive properties, the prepared GO was blended with gelatin (GEL). The bending angle of the GO/GEL hydrogel was studied at relative humidities of 80–85 % at 37 ºC. The internal structure morphology of the blend gel was analyzed by synchrotron radiation X-ray tomographic microscopy. GO2/GEL was selected for the development of a humidity-responsive actuator because of its optimal intensity ratio (ID/IG) in the Raman spectrum. X-ray and TEM images showed the good dispersion of GO2 particles in the hydrogel matrix. GO2/GEL exhibited the largest bending angle (θ = 930.11 ± 49.28º) and fast humidity response (angular rate of change ∼ 9.380 ± 0.513 ºs−1). Thus, GO2 particles are suitable for use as a humidity-responsive material for humidity actuator applications.

Enhanced long-term stability of zinc-air batteries using a quaternized PVA-chitosan composite separator with thin-layered MoS2

Due to their high energy density and cost-effectiveness, rechargeable zinc-air batteries (ZABs) are increasingly recognized for their potential as long-duration energy storage solutions. A crucial component for maximizing their efficiency is the membrane separator, which must exhibit high hydroxide-ion conductivity and long-term stability. This study introduces an innovative hybrid composite separator, created by embedding thin-layered molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), known for its intrinsic negative charge, into a polycationic quaternized PVA-chitosan (CS) matrix. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is functionalized with quaternary ammonium (QA) groups before being combined with CS and MoS2, using a solvent blending technique. The separator's three-dimensional structure and morphology is analyzed via synchrotron radiation X-ray tomographic microscopy (SR-XTM). Results demonstrate that the ZAB equipped with a quaternized PVA/CS/0.5 wt.% MoS2 composite separator achieved a high conductivity of 87.3 mS cm-1 and exceptional stability, enduring over 465 cycles. This performance is attributed to the synergistic interaction between the quaternized PVA-CS matrix and the MoS2 surface, forming robust polymer complexes through electrostatic interactions. These findings suggest that the developed separators hold significant promise for advanced ZAB applications.

Utilizing acid-etched Fe-waste for sustainable synthesis of conductive perovskite-type materials from automotive industrial residue

A common method for reducing waste and environmental problems brought on by landfills is to reuse waste, especially heavy metals such as iron. Automotive industrial waste containing Fe-rich metal is successfully transformed into a highly pure structure of Fe2O3 using an etching method with HNO3 acid. This resulting structure serves as a precursor for synthesizing LaNi1-xFexO3±δ perovskite conducting materials. The desired perovskite conductive phase can be produced by substituting Fe2O3-treated waste at the B-site (Ni position) before calcination at 1200 °C. However, LaNiO3±δ and LaNi0.6Fe0.4O3±δ could not be synthesized under ideal conditions, as indicated by XRD analysis using TOPAS software, which revealed the presence of undesirable phases. Both compounds, LaNiO3±δ and LaNi0.6Fe0.4O3±δ demonstrated electrical conductivity with values of 362 S/cm and 42 S/cm at 550 °C, respectively. Nonetheless, electrical conductivity of both compounds decreased due to unintended phase contamination during the synthesis process. The Fe2O3-substituted compounds at the Ni position, in an exact amount of 1 mol, exhibited minimal electrical conductivity. Although the synthesis conditions to produce a single phase of LaFeO3±δ were identified, LaFeO3±δ, despite its low electrical conductivity, is frequently used in electrical devices as a gas detection sensor. The thermal expansion coefficient of all synthesized waste samples is represented in the range of 12–13 × 10−6 °C−1, which is comparable to IT-SOFC electrolyte materials. Furthermore, microstructural investigation revealed that the introduction of Fe into LaNiO3±δ reduced particle size and porosity, ultimately resulting in higher densities. These findings were confirmed through synchrotron radiation x-ray tomographic microscopy (SR-XTM) analysis. The research suggests that converting Fe-waste into a pure phase of Fe2O3 using a strong acid etching technique can serve as a viable precursor for synthesizing conductive materials. This approach enhances the value of industrial waste while also reducing its volume.

Fabrication of 3D Polycaprolactone Macrostructures by 3D Electrospinning.

Building 3D electrospun macrostructures and monitoring the biological activities inside them are challenging. In this study, 3D fibrous polycaprolactone (PCL) macrostructures were successfully fabricated using in-house 3D electrospinning. The main factors supporting the 3D self-assembled nanofiber fabrication are the H3PO4 additives, flow rate, and initial distance. The effects of solution concentration, solvent, H3PO4 concentration, flow rate, initial distance, voltage, and nozzle speed on the 3D macrostructures were examined. The optimal conditions of 4 mL/h flow rate, 4 cm initial nozzle-collector distance, 14 kV voltage, and 1 mm/s nozzle speed provided a rapid buildup of cylinder macrostructures with 6 cm of diameter, reaching a final height of 16.18 ± 2.58 mm and a wall thickness of 3.98 ± 1.01 mm on one perimeter with uniform diameter across different sections (1.40 ± 1.10 μm average). Oxygen plasma treatment with 30-50 W for 5 min significantly improved the hydrophilicity of the PCL macrostructures, proving a suitable scaffold for in vitro cell cultures. Additionally, 3D images obtained by synchrotron radiation X-ray tomographic microscopy (SRXTM) presented cell penetration and cell growth within the scaffolds. This breakthrough in 3D electrospinning surpasses current scaffold fabrication limitations, opening new possibilities in various fields.

Silk Fibroin/Amino Acid Hybrid Organic Piezoelectric-Triboelectric Nanogenerator

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENG) with great performance and biodegradability are desired for the expansion of novel medical devices and wearable electronics. The present study aims at the preparation of natural silk in the form of silk fibroin (SF) film for utilization in TENG and further improving its output efficiency by embedding organic-piezoelectric gamma-glycine (γ-gly) amino acid to be a hybrid-organic piezoelectric/triboelectric nanogenerator (HO-P/TENG). The attenuated total reflectance infrared spectroscopy (ATR-IR) results demonstrated the N-H, C = O, and C-N bonding for SF and SF/γ-gly, confirming its dominant effect with a strong electron-donating tendency from those amino groups. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) and synchrotron radiation X-ray tomographic microscopy (SR-XTM) images show good dispersibility of incorporated γ-gly on the surface and also inside the SF matrix relating to its content to improve the electrical performance homogeneously. By fabricating the device in the vertical contact-separation mode, the present SF/γ-gly HO-P/TENG at 15 wt% provides the maximum output voltage (VOC ) and current (ISC ) of 81 V and 121 μA with a maximum output power (Pmax ) of 205 μW at the external load resistance of 5 MΩ. This SF-based HO-P/TENG has the advantage of being cost-effective with simple fabrication, demonstrating great promise for practical uses.

Structural, optical, and electrical properties of cellulose/titanate nanosheets composite with enhanced protection against gamma irradiation

Two-dimensional (2D) materials have emerged as a promising functional filler in nanocomposites due to their unique anisotropy and resilience to harsh conditions. We report herein the use of Ti0.91O2 nanosheets as a protective component against γ-irradiation to cellulose paper. The titanate nanosheets were prepared via a sequence of solid-state synthesis of lepidocrocite-type Cs0.7Ti1.825O4, proton exchange to H0.7Ti1.825O4·H2O, and exfoliation with tetrabutylammonium hydroxide. The nanosheets were incorporated into the commercial cellulose filter paper by a simple dip coating up to 0.6 mg cm−2, equivalent to 10 wt% TiO2. The nanosheets distribution was demonstrated by energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) mapping, synchrotron radiation X-ray tomographic microscopy (SRXTM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). It is found that γ-irradiation (up to 50 kGy) destroyed the cellulose Iβ crystallinity of uncoated paper, but this is less pronounced in the cellulose/titanate nanosheets composite. This was also confirmed by the lack of a 235 nm-absorption characteristics of irradiation-induced decomposition product(s) in nanosheets-containing papers, which also exhibit UVA shielding property. The coated samples remained white while the uncoated ones were darkened with γ-irradiation. In addition, the nanosheets-coated papers showed dielectric permittivity, loss tangent, and AC conductivity which were invariant of the γ-dose, unlike those from the uncoated ones. Our work demonstrates the use of lead-free Ti0.91O2 nanosheets as a γ-shielding component to slow down/prevent structural, optical, and electrical properties damages in cellulose paper, which could extend to other nature-derived materials.

Deformity or variation? Phenotypic diversity in the zebrafish vertebral column.

Vertebral bodies are composed of two types of metameric elements, centra and arches, each of which is considered as a developmental module. Most parts of the teleost vertebral column have a one-to-one relationship between centra and arches, although, in all teleosts, this one-to-one relationship is lost in the caudal fin endoskeleton. Deviation from the one-to-one relationship occurs in most vertebrates, related to changes in the number of vertebral centra or to a change in the number of arches. In zebrafish, deviations also occur predominantly in the caudal region of the vertebral column. In-depth phenotypic analysis of wild-type zebrafish was performed using whole-mount stained samples, histological analyses and synchrotron radiation X-ray tomographic microscopy 3D reconstructions. Three deviant centra phenotypes were observed: (i) fusion of two vertebral centra, (ii) wedge-shaped hemivertebrae and (iii) centra with reduced length. Neural and haemal arches and their spines displayed bilateral and unilateral variations that resemble vertebral column phenotypes of stem-ward actinopterygians or other gnathostomes as well as pathological conditions in extant species. Whether it is possible to distinguish variations from pathological alterations and whether alterations resemble ancestral conditions is discussed in the context of centra and arch variations in other vertebrate groups and basal actinopterygian species.

Controlled Release of Felodipine from 3D-Printed Tablets with Constant Surface Area: Influence of Surface Geometry.

In this study, 3D-printed tablets with a constant surface area were designed and fabricated using polylactic acid (PLA) in the outer compartment and polyvinyl alcohol and felodipine (FDP) in the inner compartment. The influences of different surface geometries of the inner compartment, namely, round, hexagon, square, and triangle, on drug release from 3D-printed tablets were also studied. The morphology and porosity of the inner compartment were determined using scanning electron microscopy and synchrotron radiation X-ray tomographic microscopy, respectively. Additionally, drug content and drug release were also evaluated. The results revealed that the round-shaped geometry seemed to have the greatest total surface area of the inner compartment, followed by square-shaped, hexagon-shaped, and triangle-shaped geometries. FDP-loaded 3D-printed tablets with triangle and hexagon surface geometries had the slowest drug release (about 80% within 24 h). In the round-shaped and square-shaped 3D-printed tablets, complete drug release was observed within 12 h. Furthermore, the drug release from triangle-shaped 3D-printed tablets with double the volume of the inner compartment was faster than that of a smaller volume. This was due to the fact that a larger tablet volume increased the surface area contacting the medium, resulting in a faster drug release. The findings indicated that the surface geometry of 3D-printed tablets with a constant surface area affected drug release. This study suggests that 3D printing technology may be used to develop oral solid dosage forms suitable for customized therapeutic treatments.

Multipartite Flowers with a Distinct Floral Cup and Multiovulate Carpels: An Early Cretaceous Angiosperm of Probable Lauralean Relationship

Premise of research. Typically, the small coalified mesofossil flowers known from the Early Cretaceous have character combinations that are unknown among extant angiosperms, highlighting that many extinct lineages, which will be important for understanding the early diversification of angiosperms, are currently unrecognized. The fossils studied here provide a further example of an early angiosperm flower with an unusual combination of features of extant Laurales and other magnoliids.Methodology. Mesofossils were extracted from the sediments, cleaned using standard methods, and investigated using scanning electron microscopy and synchrotron radiation X-ray tomographic microscopy. Comparisons with extant and fossil taxa, and a phylogenetic assessment using the existing Doyle and Endress data set for extant angiosperms, were used to assess potential relationships.Pivotal results. Racheliflora is named as a new Early Cretaceous flower based on floral buds with an obconical floral cup. The perianth has about six whorls, each of four tepals. Tepals borne on the outside of the floral cup are bract-like, while inner tepals are more petallike and borne on the rim of the floral cup. The androecium comprises two whorls of four bulky, partly laminar stamens that are also borne on the rim of the floral cup. The gynoecium is apocarpous with three free carpels, each of which contains many ovules borne along two ventral placentae.Conclusions. Racheliflora is most closely related to extant magnoliids but possesses a combination of characters that is unknown among extant taxa. It has several carpels borne in a distinct floral cup, as in pluricarpellate members of Laurales, but the multiovulate carpels and bulky, laminar stamens are unknown in Laurales and more like features seen in other groups of magnoliids.

New Insight into the Impact of Effervescence on Gel Layer Microstructure and Drug Release of Effervescent Matrices Using Combined Mechanical and Imaging Characterisation Techniques

Gel layer characteristics play a crucial role in hydrophilic hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) matrix development. Effervescent agents have the potential to affect the gel layer microstructures. This study aimed to investigate the influence of effervescence on the microstructure of the gel layer around HPMC matrices using a combination of texture analysis and imaging techniques. The relationship with drug release profile and release mechanisms were also examined. The high amounts of effervescent agents promoted a rapid carbonation reaction, resulting in a high gel layer formation with a low gel strength through texture analysis. This finding was ascribed to the enhanced surface roughness and porosity observed under digital microscopy and microporous structure of the gel layer under scanning electron microscopy. The reconstructed three-dimensional images from synchrotron radiation X-ray tomographic microscopy notably exhibited the interconnected pores of various sizes from the carbonation reaction of effervescent and microporous networks, indicating the gel layer on the tablet surface. Notably, effervescence promoted the increase in interconnected porosities, which directly influenced the strength of the gel layer microstructure, drug release patterns and release mechanism of the effervescent matrix tablet. Therefore, combined mechanical characterisation and imaging techniques can provide new insights into the role of effervescent agents on the gel layer microstructure, and describe the relationship of drug release patterns and release mechanism of matrix tablets.

Internal anatomy of a fossilized embryonic stage ofthe Cambrian-Ordovician scalidophoran Markuelia.

The Wangcun fossil Lagerstätte in Hunan, South China, has yielded hundreds of fossilized embryos of Markuelia hunanensis representing different developmental stages. Internal tissues have only rarely been observed, impeding further understanding of the soft tissue anatomy, phylogenetic affinity and evolutionary significance of Markuelia. In this study, we used synchrotron radiation X-ray tomographic microscopy (SRXTM) to study a new collection of fossil embryos from the Wangcun fossil Lagerstätte. We describe specimens exhibiting a spectrum of preservation states, the best of which preserves palisade structures underneath the cuticle of the head and tail, distinct from patterns of centripetal mineralization of the cuticle and centrifugal mineralization of hypha-like structures, seen elsewhere in this specimen and other fossils within the same assemblage. Our computed tomographic reconstruction of these mineralization phases preserves the gross morphology of (i) longitudinal structures associated with the tail spines, which we interpret as the proximal ends of longitudinal muscles, and (ii) a ring-shaped structure internal to the introvert, which we interpret as a ring-shaped brain, as anticipated of the cycloneuralian affinity of Markuelia. This is the first record of a fossilized nervous system in a scalidophoran, and the first instance in Orsten-style preservation, opening the potential for further such records within this widespread mode of high-fidelity three-dimensional preservation.

Mild-intensity physical activity prevents cardiac and osseous iron deposition without affecting bone mechanical property or porosity in thalassemic mice

Thalassemia causes anemia, ineffective erythropoiesis, bone loss and iron accumulation in several tissues, e.g., liver, bone and heart, the last of which leads to lethal cardiomyopathy and arrhythmia. Although exercise reportedly improves bone density in thalassemic mice, exercise performance is compromised and might pose risk of cardiovascular accident in thalassemic patients. Therefore, we sought to explore whether mild-intensity physical activity (MPA) with 30–50% of maximal oxygen consumption was sufficient to benefit the heart and bone. Herein, male hemizygous β-globin knockout (BKO) mice and wild-type littermates were subjected to voluntary wheel running 1 h/day, 5 days/week for 3 months (MPA group) or kept sedentary (SDN; control). As determined by atomic absorption spectroscopy, BKO-MPA mice had less iron accumulation in heart and bone tissues compared with BKO-SDN mice. Meanwhile, the circulating level of fibroblast growth factor-23—a factor known to reduce serum iron and intestinal calcium absorption—was increased early in young BKO-MPA mice. Nevertheless, MPA did not affect duodenal calcium transport or body calcium retention. Although MPA restored the aberrant bone calcium-phosphorus ratio to normal range, it did not change vertebral calcium content or femoral mechanical properties. Microstructural porosity in tibia of BKO-MPA mice remained unaltered as determined by synchrotron radiation X-ray tomographic microscopy. In conclusion, MPA prevents cardiac and bone iron accumulation, which is beneficial to thalassemic patients with limited physical fitness or deteriorated cardiac performance. However, in contrast to moderate-intensity exercise, MPA does not improve bone mechanical properties or reduce bone porosity.

Effects of Silver Diamine Nitrate and Silver Diamine Fluoride on Dentin Remineralization and Cytotoxicity to Dental Pulp Cells: An In Vitro Study.

Silver diamine nitrate (SDN) is expected to help control caries similar to silver diamine fluoride (SDF). The aim of this study was to determine the mineral precipitation in demineralized dentin and the cytotoxicity of SDN and SDF to dental pulp cells. Demineralized dentin specimens were prepared, and SDF, SDN, or water (control) was applied. The specimens were then remineralized in simulated body fluid for 2 weeks. The mineral precipitation in the specimens was examined using FTIR-ATR, SEM-EDX, and synchrotron radiation X-ray tomographic microscopy (SRXTM). Additionally, the cytotoxicity of SDF and SDN to human dental pulp stem cells was analyzed using an MTT assay. The increase in FTIR spectra attributable to apatite formation in demineralized dentin in the SDF group was significantly higher compared to the SDN and control groups (p < 0.05). Dentinal tubule occlusion by the precipitation of silver salts was detected in both SDF and SDN groups. The mineral density as shown in SRXTM images and cytotoxicity of both SDN and SDF groups were comparable (p > 0.05). In conclusion, SDF demonstrated superior in vitro apatite formation compared to SDN. However, the degree of mineral precipitation and cytotoxic effects of both were similar.

Growth and feeding ecology of coniform conodonts.

Conodonts were the first vertebrates to develop mineralized dental tools, known as elements. Recent research suggests that conodonts were macrophagous predators and/or scavengers but we do not know how this feeding habit emerged in the earliest coniform conodonts, since most studies focus on the derived, ‘complex’ conodonts. Previous modelling of element position and mechanical properties indicate they were capable of food processing. A direct test would be provided through evidence of in vivo element crown tissue damage or through in vivo incorporated chemical proxies for a shift in their trophic position during ontogeny. Here we focus on coniform elements from two conodont taxa, the phylogenetically primitive Proconodontus muelleri Miller, 1969 from the late Cambrian and the more derived Panderodus equicostatus Rhodes, 1954 from the Silurian. Proposing that this extremely small sample is, however, representative for these taxa, we aim to describe in detail the growth of an element from each of these taxa in order to the test the following hypotheses: (1) Panderodus and Proconodontus processed hard food, which led to damage of their elements consistent with prey capture function; and (2) both genera shifted towards higher trophic levels during ontogeny. We employed backscatter electron (BSE) imaging, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and synchrotron radiation X-ray tomographic microscopy (SRXTM) to identify growth increments, wear and damage surfaces, and the Sr/Ca ratio in bioapatite as a proxy for the trophic position. Using these data, we can identify whether they exhibit determinate or indeterminate growth and whether both species followed linear or allometric growth dynamics. Growth increments (27 in Pa. equicostatus and 58 in Pr. muelleri) were formed in bundles of 4–7 increments in Pa. equicostatus and 7–9 in Pr. muelleri. We interpret the bundles as analogous to Retzius periodicity in vertebrate teeth. Based on applied optimal resource allocation models, internal periodicity might explain indeterminate growth in both species. They also allow us to interpret the almost linear growth of both individuals as an indicator that there was no size-dependent increase in mortality in the ecosystems where they lived e.g., as would be the case in the presence of larger predators. Our findings show that periodic growth was present in early conodonts and preceded tissue repair in response to wear and damage. We found no microwear and the Sr/Ca ratio, and therefore the trophic position, did not change substantially during the lifetimes of either individual. Trophic ecology of coniform conodonts differed from the predatory and/or scavenger lifestyle documented for “complex” conodonts. We propose that conodonts adapted their life histories to top-down controlled ecosystems during the Nekton Revolution.

Synchrotron imagery of phosphatized eggs in Waptia cf. W. fieldensis from the middle Cambrian (Miaolingian, Wuliuan) Spence Shale of Utah

AbstractExceptionally preserved fossil eggs and embryos provide critical information regarding paleoembryogenesis, reproductive strategies, and the early ontogeny of early arthropods, but the rarity of preservation of both eggs and egg-bearing organisms in situ limits their use in detailed evolutionary developmental (evo-devo) studies. Burgess Shale-type deposits preserve rare instances of egg-bearing arthropods as carbonaceous compressions; however, the eggs are usually poorly preserved with no compelling evidence of embryos. We describe the first record of a brooding specimen of Waptia cf. W. fieldensis from the Spence Shale, a Cambrian (Wuliuan Stage) Burgess Shale-type deposit in northeastern Utah and southeastern Idaho. This is the first record of an egg-bearing arthropod from the Spence Shale and it exhibits two distinct modes of preservation among eggs within the single clutch: carbonization and phosphatization. Unlike the egg-bearing Burgess Shale specimens, many eggs of this Utah specimen are also preserved three-dimensionally. In addition, synchrotron radiation X-ray tomographic microscopy reveals internal distributions of mineral phases, along with potential remnants of the egg membrane and attachment structures, but, as in the Burgess Shale, no explicit traces of developing embryos. The distinct modes of preservation highlight the existence of diagenetic microenvironments within some eggs, but not in others during fossilization.

X-ray nanotomography and electron backscatter diffraction demonstrate the crystalline, heterogeneous and impermeable nature of conodont white matter.

Conodont elements, microfossil remains of extinct primitive vertebrates, are commonly exploited as mineral archives of ocean chemistry, yielding fundamental insights into the palaeotemperature and chemical composition of past oceans. Geochemical assays have been traditionally focused on the so-called lamellar and white matter crown tissues; however, the porosity and crystallographic nature of the white matter and its inferred permeability are disputed, raising concerns over its suitability as a geochemical archive. Here, we constrain the characteristics of this tissue and address conflicting interpretations using ptychographic X-ray-computed tomography (PXCT), pore network analysis, synchrotron radiation X-ray tomographic microscopy (srXTM) and electron back-scatter diffraction (EBSD). PXCT and pore network analyses based on these data reveal that while white matter is extremely porous, the pores are unconnected, rendering this tissue closed to postmortem fluid percolation. EBSD analyses demonstrate that white matter is crystalline and comprised of a single crystal typically tens of micrometres in dimensions. Combined with evidence that conodont elements grow episodically, these data suggest that white matter, which comprises the denticles of conodont elements, grows syntactically, indicating that individual crystals are time heterogeneous. Together these data provide support for the interpretation of conodont white matter as a closed geochemical system and, therefore, its utility of the conodont fossil record as a historical archive of Palaeozoic and Early Mesozoic ocean chemistry.

Influence of pore morphologies on the mechanical and tribo-electrical performance of polydimethylsiloxane sponge fabricated via commercial seasoning templates

This work demonstrated the influence of pore morphologies on the mechanical behavior and tribo-electrical performance of fabricated polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) sponge. Commercial seasonings with different 3D geometric shapes were used as a sacrificial template to control the pore structure of the PDMS sponge. The result indicated that the softest PDMS sponge was molded by using a sodium chloride (NaCl) crystal template, as indicated by the lowest compressive modulus value. Then, P(VDF–HFP) was incorporated into PDMS prepolymer in order to enhance the charge generation characteristic of PDMS. Besides, the composite 3D structure was revealed using synchrotron radiation X-ray tomographic microscopy (SRXTM). Interpretation from the SRXTM result confirmed that the porous structure had different pore shapes, i.e., an octahedral-like shape and a circular-like shape in a particular sponge. By pairing the composite PDMS sponge with an aluminum (Al) plate for the triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), the maximum electrical outputs of ~29.9 V and ~0.56 μA for voltage and current, respectively, were detected with loading 50 wt% of P(VDF – HFP). The presented TENG was applied successfully for sensing basic human activities practically, which demonstrated potential applications in wearable electronics.

Development of a Multihole Atmospheric Plasma Jet for Growth Rate Enhancement of Broccoli Seeds

This work aims to develop a multihole atmospheric pressure plasma jet (APPJ) device to increase the plasma area and apply it to a continuous seed treatment system. Broccoli seed was used to study the effects of an atmospheric pressure plasma jet on seed germination and growth rate. An argon flow rate of 4.2 lpm, a plasma power of 412 W, and discharge frequency of 76 kHz were used for seed treatment. The contact angle decreased strongly with the increase in treatment time from 20 s to 80 s. The broccoli seed’s outer surface morphology seemed to have been slightly modified to a smoother surface by the plasma treatment during the treatment time of 80 s. However, the cross-sectional images resulted from Synchrotron radiation X-ray tomographic microscopy (SRXTM) confirmed no significant difference between seeds untreated and treated by plasma for 80 s. This result indicates that plasma does not affect the bulk characteristics of the seed but does provide delicate changes to the top thin layer on the seed surface. After seven days of cultivation, the seed treated by plasma for 30 s achieved the highest germination and yield.

Effects of Different Application Times of Silver Diamine Fluoride on Mineral Precipitation in Demineralized Dentin.

Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) is a cost-effective method for arresting active dental caries. However, the limited cooperation of patients may lead to an SDF application time that is shorter than the recommended 1–3 min for carious lesions. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the effect of different application times of SDF on the degree of mineral precipitation in demineralized dentin. Demineralized dentin specimens from permanent maxillary molars were treated by applying 38% SDF for 30, 60, or 180 s. Water was applied in the control group. The specimens were immersed in simulated body fluid for 2 weeks, and the mineral precipitation in demineralized dentin was then analyzed using FTIR-ATR, SEM-EDX, and synchrotron radiation X-ray tomographic microscopy (SRXTM). The FTIR-ATR results showed a significant increase in mineral precipitation in the 180 s group after 1 week. However, after 2 weeks, the SRXTM images indicated comparable mineral density between the 30, 60, and 180 s groups. The precipitation of silver chloride and calcium phosphate crystals that occluded dentinal tubules was similar in all experimental groups. In conclusion, an application time of either 30, 60, or 180 s promoted a comparable degree of mineral precipitation in demineralized dentin.

3D pore structure, thermal and physical properties of metakaolin-black rice husk ash-based alkali-activated cement

Alkali-activated cement (AAC) produced with metakaolin and black rice husk ash was investigated. The characteristics, physical properties, and thermal properties were investigated. Porosity assessments were carried out using synchrotron radiation X-ray tomographic microscopy (XTM). The results revealed that the concentration of NaOH solution and Na2SiO3 solution was the key parameter which affected the morphology and properties of AAC. Particle-structures and prolonged structures were formed when using NaOH as an activator. However, stacked plate-like structures were observed when using Na2SiO3 together with NaOH. The amorphous phases of N-A-S-H gel and geopolymer were formed. XTM profiles showed that the pore volume decreased with increasing NaOH solution concentration and Na2SiO3 contents. The 3D images illustrated that the pore structures were occupied by pores less than 50 µm in size. Pore connections within the range of 0–50 µm were the main parameter which controlled the thermal and physical properties.
