Service-learning Pedagogy: A Pathway to Empowering Students as A Catalyst for Sustainable Tourism Development through Civic Engagement and Community Development

The field of education for sustainable development advocates for new teaching methods that offer hands-on, engaging, and transformative learning experiences that encourage critical and systemic thinking within the framework of sustainable development. Higher education institutions strive to support the attainment of SDG 4 by promoting inclusive, fair, and high-quality education. Service-learning in higher education is in tune with the educational principles of critical and transformative pedagogy and facilitated through implementation of innovative pedagogical approaches in training professionals that will be socially critical and committed to social transformation, with the goal of achieving a larger social justice. Consequently, one of the major challenges attributed to the lack of social practice and community service in the learning environment leads to the detachment of students to the community, as well as the low social responsibility among the undergraduates. The study aimed to fill the research gap in the literature on the impact of service-learning pedagogies among students based on knowledge, attitude, and spirit and how it is correlated with professional development, personal development, social transactions. Furthermore, this study highlights how civic engagement and sustainable community development, the integral components of service-learning, contribute to and align with the principles of sustainable tourism. By connecting these elements, the research emphasizes the multifaceted benefits of service-learning in shaping socially responsible professionals and fostering sustainable tourism

Preserving cultural heritage: Integrating traditional values and local arts for sustainable tourism

Tourism significantly contributes to global economics, with Indonesia relying heavily on this sector for economic growth. However, tourism often challenges cultural and environmental preservation. This study explores the Cultural Village of Polowijen in Malang City, Indonesia, where Malangan masks play a central cultural and economic role. By integrating sustainable tourism principles, the research aims to develop a model for preserving Malangan masks, boosting economic growth while safeguarding cultural heritage. The study employs a qulitative approach. Joint Ministerial Regulation (PBM) Number 40 of 2009, which provides guidelines for cultural preservation through protection, development, and fostering, underpins the study. Findings indicate that sustainable tourism practices significantly contribute to both economic benefits and cultural preservation. Increased local engagement and awareness have been observed, with community members showing a strong commitment to preserving Malangan masks. Economic data reveal that cultural tourism development generates additional income and new employment opportunities. The regulation's implementation has successfully protected cultural heritage, enriched traditional arts, and promoted community sustainability. This study demonstrates that sustainable tourism can balance economic growth and cultural preservation, providing a model for other regions aiming to develop cultural tourism while safeguarding heritage.

Stakeholder Collaboration in Sustainable Tourism Development in Tana Toraja, South Sulawesi Province, Indonesia: Efforts to Improve Tourist Visits

The primary objective of this study is to assess the impact of stakeholder collaboration, implementation of sustainable tourism principles, supportive policies, and regulations on the enhancement of tourist visitation. Tana Toraja. Data was collected from 290 respondents from government institutions, local community groups, the private sector, educational institutions, non-governmental organizations and mass media. Respondents were selected using purposive sampling technique. Structural equation modeling the data was subjected to analysis. The findings of this investigation demonstrate the following: 1) Enhanced collaboration among stakeholders yields a favorable and noteworthy impact on the rise in tourist arrivals, 2) The execution of sustainable tourism principles leads to a beneficial and notable rise in tourist visits, 3) The endorsement of policies and regulations exerts a favorable and notable sway on the increase in tourist visits. This research recommends 1) Collaboration and coordination between governmental authorities and key players in the tourism sector are crucial in enhancing the overall tourism experience for visitors. 2) Enhancements in the implementation of sustainable tourism practices, including environmental conservation, community engagement, and preservation of local traditions, are essential for sustaining the appeal of tourist destinations and elevating visitor satisfaction levels. 3) The formulation of policies and regulatory frameworks by the government is imperative to bolster tourism growth, encompassing strategies such as promotional activities, infrastructure enhancements, adherence to quality benchmarks, and financial incentives to allure a larger influx of tourists.

Objective: This research aims to compare tourism management strategies and destination branding in Bali and Yogyakarta, with a view to identifying different approaches and their impact on tourism development. Theoretical Framework: This research is based on theories of destination branding and tourism management, including the Destination Marketing Organization (DMO) framework and sustainable tourism principles. These frameworks provide a basis for understanding the strategic differences between the two destinations. Method: This comparative research utilized a mixed methods approach, combining secondary data analysis, an online survey, and an extensive literature review. Data was collected from various sources to gain diverse perspectives on tourism strategies in Bali and Yogyakarta. Results and Discussion: The findings show that Bali strategically utilizes technology for global digital marketing through social media and online platforms, thus increasing its international appeal. In contrast, Yogyakarta focuses on using technology to drive personalized tourist interactions, emphasizing local environmental sustainability and community welfare. Both destinations also highlight cultural diversity, with Bali capitalizing on its cultural appeal and Yogyakarta prioritizing environmental sustainability. Influencers play an important role in disseminating tourism information, especially through social media, underscoring their power in shaping traveler perceptions. Research Implications: The practical implications of this research suggest that stakeholders should tailor their tourism management and branding strategies to each destination's unique attributes to ensure sustainable growth and development. Insights from this research can inform the formulation of effective approaches that resonate with tourists and support long-term sustainability. Originality/Value: This study contributes to the literature by offering a comparative analysis of two leading destinations in Indonesia, highlighting the role of technology and social media in tourism management. Its value lies in providing actionable insights for stakeholders to improve destination branding and achieve sustainable tourism development.

Green Online Food Delivery In Tourist Destinations: Analysis of Tourists' Value on Attitude And Purchase Intentions

This study investigates the implementation of environmentally friendly online food delivery services in tourist destinations, aiming to align with the principles of sustainable tourism. The primary objective is to analyze how tourist values influence their attitudes and purchase intentions toward online food delivery in these destinations. A quantitative research method is employed, utilizing Structural Equation Modeling-Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) to assess the impact of customer value on attitudes and purchase intentions toward Green Online Food Delivery (Green OFD). The study sample comprises 120 tourists with prior experience using online food delivery services during their visits to tourist destinations. The results indicate that the availability of Green OFD, derived from environmentally friendly local products, significantly affects tourists' attitudes and purchase intentions, especially among those who are mindful of sustainability issues. Tourists demonstrate positive attitudes and purchase intentions when they recognize functional, emotional, social, and epistemic values, including the feeling of contributing to environmental conservation by opting for Green OFD. The findings offer theoretical and practical insights for advancing sustainable tourism destination development.

ANALYSIS OF CONSUMERS' ATTITUDES TOWARDS THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF THE TOURISM SECTOR IN THE LITHUANIA REGIONS

In the article, the author analyzes the attitude of consumers towards the sustainable development of the tourism sector in the Lithuania regions. The purpose of the research is to analyze the attitude of consumers towards the sustainable development of the tourism sector in the Lithuania regions. During the research, a quantitative survey (questionnaire survey) was conducted. Data collection methods - analysis of scientific literature and sources, document analysis, questionnaire survey. The article analyzes the consumers' attitude towards the sustainable development of the tourism sector from a theoretical point of view and presents the results of the conducted research. It is concluded that the respondents consider the following factors of sustainable development of the tourism sector to be the most important: development of ecological tourism; accessibility of tourism; creation of tourist routes accessible to all; certification of tourism services; development of the common national route and development of bicycle tourism infrastructure, etc. According to the respondents, the following problems of sustainable development of the tourism sector are usually encountered: economic problem: insufficient investments in the development of sustainable tourism; lack of knowledge about the essence and principles of sustainable tourism in local politics; underdeveloped tourism sector infrastructure, etc.

Rural tourism: Nurturing prosperity and community resilience

Rural tourism entails visiting rural regions for leisure, recreation and cultural immersion. It is valued for its potential to generate economic opportunities, preserve cultural heritage and conserve natural resources while empowering local communities. It offers potential for economic development by creating employment opportunities and generating income for rural residents through various tourism-related activities. This paper investigates the benefits to local communities of rural tourism development through a comprehensive review and insights from community stakeholders. The research was based on existing literature and employed a survey using a structured questionnaire and rigorous data analysis techniques. The survey included three well-known villages for their tourism experiences in the Korça region located in the southeastern part of Albania. The primary research targeted 200 members of the local communities aiming to analyze their perceptions of the benefits that rural tourism brings to their communities both in terms of income generation and socio-economic benefits. The study revealed that rural tourism has positively contributed to the economic development of these communities through revenue growth, the generation of employment and self-employment opportunities as well as the improvement of infrastructure through the lens of community perspectives. Rural tourism holds considerable promise for advancing sustainable development by offering economic, social and environmental benefits to rural regions. However, careful planning, community involvement and adherence to sustainable tourism principles are required.

Factors of forming tourist flows in modern development of tourism in the Russian Federation

The article presents the factors of modern development of tourism in Russia. Statistics on the development of the Russian tourism indicate that the direction, dynamics and intensity of tourist flows have changed quite significantly from 2010 to 2022. According to certain development parameters of the domestic tourism industry, there are both considerable achievements and unresolved issues. The formulation of public policy on resolution of the latter should be implemented on the basis of current factors. Sustainable development of the Russian tourism sector is possible by ensuring an integrated approach that includes improvement of the quality of tourism services based on the principles of sustainable tourism alongside with increase of investment attractiveness of tourism infrastructure and increase of investments in tourism digital products. The expected promising directions for the development of the industry are substantiated: the priority of health and safety, ecotourism, decrease in the number of spontaneous trips, development of niche tourism areas, digitalisation of the industry, virtualisation and simulation (imitation of tourism activities). Attention is focused on important factors of tourism development: potential growth points for the tourism industry are identified as well as the expected types of tourism that will attract demand from tourists.

Development of the Burong Mandi tourist village through a digital-based sustainable tourism model

Burung Mandi, a village blessed with diverse tourist attractions ranging from beaches to hills and mountains, faces challenges in promoting sustainable tourism while leveraging digital approaches. To address these gaps, this community outreach program aimed to enhance the understanding of tourism stakeholders, including village officials and Pokdarwis (tourism awareness groups), on the principles of digital sustainable tourism. The program employed a training methodology, encompassing presentations and mentorship sessions. The outcomes of these activities included the creation of a tourist map, tourism packages, and a YouTube channel. Additionally, evaluation results indicated a significant improvement in the understanding of digital sustainable tourism among the participants.

Typological analysis of community participation for sustainable tourism in Sasak Ende Tourism Village

Purpose — The purpose of this study is to analyze community participation in Sasak Ende Tourism Village in managing and designing sustainable tourism development strategies based on the results of typological analysis of community participation.Method — This study employs qualitative methods utilizing primary and secondary data sources. Data were gathered through observation, interviews, and documentation. We interviewed informants from the Central Lombok Tourism Office, the Managing Secretary of Sasak Ende Tourism Village, and Pujut Regency. Furthermore, triangulation analysis techniques were utilized in this study to assess the validity of the data.Result — Based on the analysis, three levels of community participation were identified in Sasak Ende Tourism Village: material incentive participation, interactive participation, and independent mobilization. Community participation activities in Sasak Ende Tourism Village adhere to socio-cultural, economic, and environmentally sustainable tourism principles. The strategy employed focuses on developing human resources (HR) and preserving Sasak traditional houses. The analysis results in a sustainable tourism development strategy for Sasak Ende Tourism Village based on the typology of participation and the principles of sustainable tourism.Practical implications — This study suggests that fostering various levels of community participation and aligning tourism development strategies with socio-cultural, economic, and environmental sustainability principles can lead to the preservation of cultural heritage and sustainable growth in destinations like Sasak Ende Tourism Village.

Encouraging Religion and Sustainable Tourism as a Conception of Indonesian Halal Tourism Development

Objective: This study aims to explore and analyse the development of halal tourism in Indonesia, focusing on the synergy between religion and sustainable tourism. The aim is to understand how religion and sustainable tourism principles can support the growth of halal tourism and its potential economic and social benefits. Theoretical Framework: The study draws on halal tourism, religion, and sustainable tourism. It examines how religion can provide a moral and ethical foundation for halal tourism practices and how sustainable tourism principles, including nature and cultural conservation, can be integrated into the development of halal tourism. Method: Qualitative methods are employed in this study, including interviews and observations. Informants from religious institutions, tourism organisations, and local communities are selected to gather insights and perspectives on the development of halal tourism in Indonesia. Results and Conclusion: The study's findings highlight the importance of the synergy between religion and sustainable tourism in the development of halal tourism in Indonesia. Religion provides guidance and direction for halal practices. The development of halal tourism based on this concept can bring economic opportunities, improve the quality of tourism services, and strengthen Indonesia's position as a leading halal tourism destination. Implications: The study's findings affect policymakers, tourism organizations, and local communities. They emphasise the need for supportive policies and collaborations to promote and implement sustainable halal tourism practices. Novelty: This study contributes to the existing literature on halal tourism by examining the synergy between religion and sustainable tourism in the context of Indonesia.

Developing such tourism villages is vital for the community, providing economic benefits, alleviating poverty, and unemployment, and preserving the environment and culture. Enhancing the availability of job opportunities in rural areas by creating sustainable tourism villages will expand the range of services such as healthcare and education. Consequently, this is expected to reduce the tendency of rural communities to migrate to urban areas. Desa Wisata Batulayang adheres to sustainable tourism principles to ensure the village’s long-term sustainability. Research on the Coordination between Cultural Heritage Protection and Sustainable Tourism Development

This paper studies the coordinated relationship between cultural heritage protection and sustainable tourism development. Firstly, it introduces the concept and value of cultural heritage, including its definition, classification, historical and social significance, as well as the necessity of protection. Then it discusses the impact of tourism on cultural heritage, including the typical mode of cultural heritage tourism, opportunities and challenges, as well as international experience and case analysis. Then it introduces the concepts and principles of sustainable tourism, including the basic principles, the comprehensive consideration of ecological, social and economic sustainability, and the best examples. Next, it discusses the coordination mechanism between cultural heritage protection and sustainable tourism, including the cooperation and communication between stakeholders, the formulation and implementation of policies and regulations, and the impact of the coordination mechanism on actual cases. Dostignuti nivo razvoja održivog turizma u Republici Srbiji - slučaj banjskih destinacija

Sustainable tourism is a dominant theoretical paradigm and the most acceptable solution to the challenges of modern tourism development. The main goal of the paper is to examine the achieved level of development of sustainable tourism in the Republic of Serbia on the example of spa destinations. Spa destinations are one of the three most developed forms of tourism in the Republic of Serbia with a long tradition of development. The paper analysed the most developed and recognizable destinations: Vrnjačka Banja, Sokobanja, Vrdnik Banja, Palić Banja, Bukovička Banja and Koviljača Banja. To assess the achieved level of sustainability, indicators developed by the European Union were used: economic, ecological, social, cultural and indicators of tourist satisfaction with the destination. The research results show that the achieved level of development is not aligned with sustainable development. The paper provides recommendations on how to improve the development of tourism and harmonize it with the principles of sustainable tourism.

The development of tourism activities will be achieved, in line with global and regional policies, by promoting sustainable development and increasing stakeholders’ involvement. Beyond the affirmation of principles, it is necessary to establish concrete methods for integrating tourists, as stakeholders, into the decision-making process of tourism companies and for educating tourists in the choice of sustainable tourism destinations and activities. This article aims to review some possible methods for educating and involving tourists in sustainable tourism principles and behaviours, with reference to the measures already undertaken by large groups of tourism establishments.

Implementation of Sustainable Tourism Principles in Sport Tourism: Sustainability Efforts by Pocari Run Organizers

Sustainable tourism has become part of the general desire of Indonesia’s tourism development. The industry continuously seek ways or avenues where sustainable tourism practices can be adopted in hopes to achieve the desired outcomes of sustainable tourism. One of the ways of looking for new avenues that can adopt sustainable practices is to look at the emerging sectors of tourism. An interesting lane of tourism that can do this is sports tourism. Sports tourism relationship with sustainable tourism has been studied prior with promising potential. This study explores the sustainability efforts around marathon events by the organizers added with the participants point of view. For the research, this study will take the case study format focusing on Pocari Run. It puts forward the question whether event organizers are willing to implement sustainable tourism practices in their events and are aware sustainable tourism practices can be used as a tool for marathon events success and how it is impacting the participants. The methodology used in this research is a qualitative method, extracting insights from informants through in-depth interview directed towards Pocari Run Organizers. This study has found that the implementation of sustainable tourism practices have been implemented in Pocari Run events in accordance to previous studies. The implementation itself proved to be valuable in helping organizers develop a positive relationship with local stakeholders such as the local community and local government.
