Analyzing vegetation health dynamics across seasons and regions through NDVI and climatic variables

This study assesses the relationships between vegetation dynamics and climatic variations in Pakistan from 2000 to 2023. Employing high-resolution Landsat data for Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) assessments, integrated with climate variables from CHIRPS and ERA5 datasets, our approach leverages Google Earth Engine (GEE) for efficient processing. It combines statistical methodologies, including linear regression, Mann–Kendall trend tests, Sen's slope estimator, partial correlation, and cross wavelet transform analyses. The findings highlight significant spatial and temporal variations in NDVI, with an annual increase averaging 0.00197 per year (p < 0.0001). This positive trend is coupled with an increase in precipitation by 0.4801 mm/year (p = 0.0016). In contrast, our analysis recorded a slight decrease in temperature (− 0.01011 °C/year, p < 0.05) and a reduction in solar radiation (− 0.27526 W/m2/year, p < 0.05). Notably, cross-wavelet transform analysis underscored significant coherence between NDVI and climatic factors, revealing periods of synchronized fluctuations and distinct lagged relationships. This analysis particularly highlighted precipitation as a primary driver of vegetation growth, illustrating its crucial impact across various Pakistani regions. Moreover, the analysis revealed distinct seasonal patterns, indicating that vegetation health is most responsive during the monsoon season, correlating strongly with peaks in seasonal precipitation. Our investigation has revealed Pakistan's complex association between vegetation health and climatic factors, which varies across different regions. Through cross-wavelet analysis, we have identified distinct coherence and phase relationships that highlight the critical influence of climatic drivers on vegetation patterns. These insights are crucial for developing regional climate adaptation strategies and informing sustainable agricultural and environmental management practices in the face of ongoing climatic changes.

Detection and Screening of Organic Contaminants in A Riverine System of Georgia Using Non-Targeted Analysis

Numerous organic chemicals exist within aquatic environments, yet effectively screening and prioritizing them is a huge challenge. This study provides a comprehensive investigation into the ecological dynamics of the North Oconee River within Athens-Clarke County, Georgia, with a specific focus on the distribution of 33 identified compounds, including a prominent pesticide. The research, conducted in the riverine ecosystems proximal to the Firefly trail, employs advanced analytical techniques to elucidate potential contamination sources arising from agricultural and urban runoff. Intriguingly, the study reveals North Oconee River near the Firefly Trail as a notable site for heightened pesticide contamination, warranting a meticulous exploration of its origins. Furthermore, the investigation unveils the intricate microbial degradation processes of malathion within the North Oconee River, elucidating the pivotal role played by microbial activity in river water. The detection of degradant byproducts prompts the considerations of bioavailability and toxicity, associating potential implications for the river’s overall ecological health. Ongoing research endeavors to precisely quantify environmental risks and unravel indigenous microbial degradation pathways, presenting pivotal contributions to the scientific community’s understanding of complex riverine ecosystems. This research serves as a foundational piece in informing sustainable environmental management practices and emphasizes the urgency of comprehensive stewardship in safeguarding aquatic ecosystems.

WSN-Driven Advances in Soil Moisture Estimation: A Machine Learning Approach

Soil moisture estimation is crucial for agricultural productivity and environmental management. This study explores the integration of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) with machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) techniques to optimize soil moisture estimation. By combining data from WSN nodes with satellite and climate data, this research aims to enhance the accuracy and resolution of soil moisture estimation, enabling more effective agricultural planning, irrigation management, and environmental monitoring. Five ML models, including linear regression, support vector machines, decision trees, random forests, and long short-term memory networks (LSTM), are evaluated and compared using real-world data from multiple geographical regions, which includes a dataset from NASA’s SMAP project, supplemented by climate data, which employs both active and passive sensors for data collection. The outcomes demonstrate that the LSTM model consistently outperforms other ML algorithms across various evaluation metrics, highlighting the effectiveness of WSN-driven approaches to soil moisture estimation. The study contributes to the advancement of soil moisture monitoring technologies, offering insights into the potential of WSNs combined with ML and DL for sustainable agriculture and environmental management practices.

Unlocking solutions for cleaner waters: The Industrial Wastewater Quality Index in Egypt and beyond

AbstractThis research study conducted in Egypt focuses on addressing the issue of industrial water pollution and promoting sustainable water and environmental management practices. The study introduces a novel tool called the Industrial Wastewater Quality Index (IWQI) and utilizes two assessment methods to evaluate the extent of water pollution caused by industrial effluents. The IWQI takes into consideration both the environmental limits specified by Egyptian legislation and industry‐specific parameters, effectively condensing extensive water quality data into simplified categories. The IWQI model proves to be a dependable instrument for assessing the overall quality of groundwater intended for industrial use. It incorporates multiple water quality indices and employs multivariate statistical analysis techniques to determine the contribution of each parameter to industrial water quality. This comprehensive analysis enhances the reliability of the model, making it a valuable point of reference for similar locations worldwide, particularly those sharing similar climatic conditions. The outcomes of this study provide valuable insights for policymakers and stakeholders involved in regulating and mitigating industrial water pollution in Egypt. The findings also have relevance to other countries facing similar challenges, highlighting the importance of developing effective techniques for investigating pollution sources, monitoring water quality, and forecasting future trends. The study underscores the necessity of implementing proactive measures to address industrial water pollution and protect water resources and ecosystems. By emphasizing these aspects, the study emphasizes the importance of promoting sustainable water and environmental management practices. Overall, the IWQI and the study's findings contribute to the development of strategies to manage and control industrial water pollution and can guide policymakers and stakeholders in Egypt and other countries facing similar challenges.

Critical environmental management accounting practices influencing service delivery of growing cities in a developing economy: a review and conceptual framework

AbstractThe scope for environmental management accounting (EMA) has perpetually received attention in recent years, and it has become a pillar of sustainability in addressing environmental and service delivery challenges. Most scholars focused on EMA in a corporate context, limited attention has been given to local governments in available scholarly articles except for various initiatives by the United Nations to guide local governments in adopting and implementing sustainable environmental management practices. This has continued to affect the uptake of EMA in local governments, particularly in developing economies, as the question concerning the role of EMA practices (EMAPs) in environmental and service delivery remains unexplored. A systematic literature review (SLR) through the use of Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) to identify EMAPs and their role in promoting environmental and service delivery performance (SDP) in local governments was employed. Articles from Google Scholar and Scopus published between 2000 and 2023 were considered. The researchers identified and evaluated energy accounting, material flow accounting, water management accounting, carbon management accounting and biodiversity management accounting as effective EMAPs to address local governments’ environmental and service delivery challenges. Furthermore, a conceptual framework to integrate EMAPs with environmental improvement and service delivery plans was developed and has implications for policymakers, communities, government and environmental specialists. The lessons learned from the research are pertinent to developing sustainable cities in emerging economies and further expose the need for further research to consider accounting approaches from higher-income countries as benchmarks for future development of ecosystem accounting to assist local governments in managing environmental challenges.

Abiotic and biotic factors influencing heavy metals pollution in fisheries of the Western Amazon

The escalating industrial and artisanal extraction of natural resources in the Amazon Basin has centered it into the spotlight of global environmental concern. This study deals with the environmental problems of heavy metals pollution and biomagnification, which stem from mining, agricultural, petrochemical, and industrial discharges. We conducted an extensive investigation, analyzing 360 fish specimens representing 58 species, to assess the concentrations of 11 metals (Al, As, Cd, Cr, Cu, He, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn, and Hg) along the Ecuadorian sections of the Napo and Pastaza watersheds. Stable isotope analyses (δ15N and δ13C) were employed to determine their trophic positions and potential biomagnification risks. Sampling was carried out during two distinct hydrological seasons to capture seasonal variations in metal concentrations. Furthermore, we estimated species-specific daily heavy metal intake levels. The results of our study revealed that 15 fish species and 53 individual specimens exhibited heavy metal concentrations surpassing recommended standards, with elevated levels of Al, As, and Hg posing significant risks to human consumers with daily intakes of 0.46 kg/day. Notably, our investigation unveiled concerning trends, including increased metal concentrations, Hg biomagnification within fish populations from the Pastaza watershed, and an association between smaller fish size and higher metal content. This study provides a crucial baseline for monitoring future environmental changes and understanding the persistent impacts of heavy metal pollution in the Ecuadorian Amazon region and the broader Western Amazon. It underscores the urgent need for sustainable environmental management practices to mitigate the escalating threat to these vital ecosystems.

Nitrate-Nitrogen Adsorption Characteristics and Mechanisms of Various Garden Waste Biochars.

Nitrate-nitrogen (NO3--N) removal and garden waste disposal are critical concerns in urban environmental protection. In this study, biochars were produced by pyrolyzing various garden waste materials, including grass clippings (GC), Rosa chinensis Jacq. branches (RC), Prunus persica branches (PP), Armeniaca vulgaris Lam. branches (AV), Morus alba Linn. sp. branches (MA), Platycladus orientalis (L.) Franco branches (PO), Pinus tabuliformis Carrière branches (PT), and Sophorajaponica Linn. branches (SL) at three different temperatures (300 °C, 500 °C, and 700 °C). These biochars, labeled as GC300, GC500, GC700, and so on., were then used to adsorb NO3--N under various conditions, such as initial pH value, contact time, initial NO3--N concentration, and biochar dosage. Kinetic data were analyzed by pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetic models. The equilibrium adsorption data were evaluated by Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin and Dubinin-Radushkevich models. The results revealed that the biochar yields varied between 14.43% (PT700) and 47.09% (AV300) and were significantly influenced by the type of garden waste and decreased with increasing pyrolysis temperature, while the pH and ash content showed an opposite trend (p < 0.05). The efficiency of NO3--N removal was significantly influenced by the type of feedstock, preparation process, and adsorption conditions. Higher pH values had a negative influence on NO3--N adsorption, while longer contact time, higher initial concentration of NO3--N, and increased biochar dosage positively affected NO3--N adsorption. Most of the kinetic data were better fitted to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model (0.998 > R2 > 0.927). Positive b values obtained from the Temkin model indicated an exothermic process of NO3--N adsorption. The Langmuir model provided better fits for more equilibrium adsorption data than the Freundlich model, with the maximum NO3--N removal efficiency (62.11%) and adsorption capacity (1.339 mg·g-1) in PO700 under the conditions of pH = 2, biochar dosage = 50 mg·L-1, and a reaction time of 24 h. The outcomes of this study contribute valuable insights into garden waste disposal and NO3--N removal from wastewater, providing a theoretical basis for sustainable environmental management practices.

Sustainable energy and environmental management practices in the recreation and tourism industries in Nsukka metropolis of Enugu State

Sustainable energy and good environmental management practices are potent factors that can be used to achieve clean energy and sustainable economic growth. This is a global problem that needs immediate action and intervention to reduce the adverse impact of climate change to humanity. This study investigated the sustainable energy and environmental management practices in the recreation and tourism industries in Nsukka metropolis of Enugu State. The descriptive research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study consisted of 209 recreation and tourism service providers in Nsukka Metropolis. Instrument for data collection was a structured questionnaire which was validated by three experts from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. The instrument has a reliability coefficient of 0.81. Frequency and percentages were used to determine level of sustainable energy and environmental management practices, while phi coefficient was used to determine relationship between sustainable energy and environmental management practices. Findings showed that recreation and tourism possess very low level of knowledge of sustainable energy use. They however showed positive attitude towards sustainable energy through the adoption of energy saving devices like energy bulbs, solar PVs etc. There is strong positive relationship between knowledge of sustainable energy and environmental management practices. The researchers recommended that government should improve on its effort to create awareness of sustainable energy use and environmental management practices among the populace if the problem of climate change is to be abated.

Pollution status monitoring and indices development for evaluating sustainable environmental management practices (SEMP) in Quaid-e-Azam Industrial Estate, Pakistan

The economic growth of the global industrial sector has become a grave concern to immensely degrade the environment in recent years. The industries lack an effective environmental management plan to mitigate environmental contamination and pollution load by following good practices such as less consumption of raw materials, waste reduction, wastewater treatment, and pollution control. Significantly, the current study aims to investigate the environmental baseline conditions of Quaid-e-Azam Industrial Estate (QIE) and design Environmental Management Plan (EMP) to alleviate the impacts of industrial wastewater effluents, ambient air, ambient noise level, and solid waste. In addition, this study monitors the current pollution status and develops the air/water quality indices to evaluate sustainable environmental management practices (SEMP) in QIE. The obtained key finding reported a poor wastewater quality index ranging from 100 to 150. Furthermore, the air quality index suggested that ambient air in the vicinity of QIE varied from 52 to 72, which is evident that ambient air is moderately polluted and pose risk to public health. Additionally, the ambient noise level was considerably 12.8% higher in the morning and 18.7% higher than the prescribed level in the afternoon. Furthermore, approximately 10 t of solid waste was collected regularly from the industrial waste pits. Around 85.8% were moderately polluting ambient air whereas only 5.1% highly deteriorating ambient air. Significantly, a detailed environmental management plan (EMP) was designed to include impact identification, mitigation measures, frequency of monitoring the effectiveness of mitigatory measures, and assigning of responsibilities. Overall, the environmental management plan should become an integral part of the overall management system to achieve sustainable development goals (SDGs), including sustainable cities and communities (SDG11), life below water (SDG14), and life on land (SDG15).

Introduction. One of the priority directions in the field of environmental protection is the construction of models for the development of the territory designed to combine the interests of nature conservation and sustainable development of territories, including the development of environmentally friendly industries and the dissemination of experience in sustainable environmental management practices. The availability of balneological resources enhances the attractiveness of the territories and can be an additional source of income for the local population. One of the ways to solve these problems is to include them in specially protected natural areas, and this strategy often brings good results and contributes to the "green" growth of the local economy. This is evidenced by numerous examples in Western Europe and North America and, to some extent, this is also the case in Russia. However, experience shows that this does not always meet expectations, and it is not enough to give the territory the status of a park. The purpose of the research. Using the example of the Arey Park in the Trans-Baikal Territory, to identify the reasons for the failures of attempts to use the European experience of natural parks in the eastern regions of Russia as factors for the development of a "green" economy in rural areas. We are considering the experience of creating a nature park in 2013 in order to protect the ecosystem and use the valuable balneological resources of Lake Ares in accordance with the goals of the "green" economy. Research results. The paper shows that, despite some improvements in the state of the coastal ecosystem, the status of specially protected natural areas (protected areas) does not contribute to achieving the originally set goals. Its balneological resources, including therapeutic mud, are used uncontrollably in the shadow sector, which does not guarantee either effective treatment or environmentally safe withdrawal. Similar problems arise for other forms of recreational services when organizing campsites, arranging hotels and food outlets. Therefore, the park practically does not realize its potential either as a driver of the growth of the local economy or for the effective use of balneological. The authors analyze the causes of the processes taking place and also propose a number of measures to involve the natural resources of parks in the local economy in such a way that their use brings economic benefits to the local population, while maintaining high environmental quality.

Determinants of catfish farmers’ use of sustainable environmental management practices in Enugu State, Nigeria

&#x0D; &#x0D; &#x0D; The study assessed the use of sustainable environmental management practices (SEMP) by fish farmers in Enugu state, Nigeria. Seventy-five catfish farmers selected through multistage sampling procedure were used for the study. Data were obtained with the aid of a well-structured questionnaire. Analysis of data was done using descriptive statistics, probit regression model and factor analysis. Results showed that most of the catfish farmers did not apply SEMP as only 25.33% of them had a score of 50% and above regarding the application of SEMP. The number of years spent in school and being a male significantly increased the likelihood of using SEMP. In contrast, the likelihood of use of SEMP significantly reduced with an increase in the number of production cycles carried out by a fish farmer. The fish farmers' constraints were grouped as poor technical knowledge and feed issues, financial uncertainties, and water supply problems. Government should deliver training packages and provide information on SEMP to catfish farmers through different media, including extension agents, radio and television messages, handbills and billboards. Supporting the farmers with credit facilities through existing credit programmes would help reduce their challenges in applying SEMP.&#x0D; &#x0D; &#x0D;

Data fusion of visible near-infrared and mid-infrared spectroscopy for rapid estimation of soil aggregate stability indices

Soil aggregate stability (AS) is a crucial soil physical property for sustainable agricultural and environmental land management practices. Yet, its conventional laboratory methods are fastidious and time consuming thereby restricting high-density sampling and large-scale estimation. Therefore, the potential of fusing visible near-infrared (vis-NIR) and mid-infrared (MIR) spectroscopy to enhance the prediction of three AS indices, namely, fast wetting (FW), slow wetting (SW) and mechanical breakdown (MB) on some Belgian Retisol, Cambisol and Luvisol topsoils was evaluated. Partial least squares regression (PLSR) was used to build calibration models for the three AS indices using the vis-NIR spectra, MIR spectra and the fusion of both spectra (SF). Another data fusion approach (i.e. model output averaging, MOA) included the use of four averaging algorithms. Results showed that MIR models outperformed the vis-NIR models for all three indices. The SF approach showed an improved prediction performance over both individual sensor techniques for the FW index only. MOA models outperformed the individual and SF models and yielded the best prediction accuracy for SW and MB indices. Data fusion modelling thus enhanced the accuracy of FW, SW and MB predictions, although the selection of the best data fusion approach is dependent on the nature of the dataset and the stability index to be assessed.

Mapping of land-use/land-cover changes and its dynamics in Awash River Basin using remote sensing and GIS

Understanding the dynamics of land-use and land-cover change at a basin scale, including its driving causes, is vital for the development and planning of appropriate environmental management policies and strategies. The aim of this research was to analyse and understand the long-term dynamics of land-use/land-cover changes and population growth in the Awash River Basin (ARB) using remote sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS). Landsat images for 1988, 2002, and 2018 were processed, classified and analysed. The accuracy assessment showed that the classification was relatively acceptable and effective in detecting the long-term land-use changes in ARB. Cropland increased by 12% between 1988 and 2002, and by 2018 it had increased by 15%. Similarly, the built-up area expanded by 52 km2 (184%) between 1988 and 2002, and by 2018 it had reached 225%. The analysis showed that the cropland and built-up area expanded at the expense of forest and shrubland, with shrubland and forest reducing by 4% and 25% respectively over the 30 year study period. Higher levels of deforestation, combined with population growth, urbanization and cropland expansion, have impacted on the available water resources and runoff in the area. The findings from this study can help in the design of sustainable environmental management strategies and practices to ensure the sustainability of the ecosystem and natural resources. The results can also be used to address food security issues in the ARB since we see an increasing trend in population growth with a commensurate decrease in agricultural land, thereby increasing food security concerns.

Environmental Management Practices of an Apparel Manufacturer in Sri Lanka: A Critique

Environmental degradation considered as one of the critical issues in the current world. To respond to this issue, organizations and businesses around the world seriously focus on environmental protection and management nowadays than before. Organizations strongly committed to adapt several sustainable environmental management practices and initiatives to prove their environmental concern. Meanwhile, it should be noticed that some organizations started pacing towards green washing declaration processes. In this sense, there is a need to explore and identify the sustainable environmental management practices which are actually practiced by the organizations.&#x0D; Hence, this paper aims to report existing sustainable environmental management practices of the organization and to find out the evidence to support the existing sustainable environmental management practices into practice. In order to achieve the study objectives, secondary data were collected mainly from the published sustainability reports of the selected apparel company for the last two years (2013/2014 and 2014/2015). Further, researchers employed the observation method to confirm whether this company is really carrying out the environmental practices which were reported in their sustainability reports or not. The researchers have identified and highlighted several sustainable environmental management practices under the three main categories such as energy conservation-related practices, water conservation-related practices and earth conservation-related practices through the sustainability reports of the company. Moreover, through the observation, researchers have confirmed that this company is really carrying out the energy conservation-related practices, water conservation-related practices and earth conservation-related practices which were reported in their sustainability reports. This study should be useful to the academics and practitioners to understand actual sustainable environmental management practices of the organizations.

Environmental ethics, environmental performance, and competitive advantage: Role of environmental training

In an era of increased stakeholder pressure for sustainable environmental management practices at workplace, organization should adopt and implement environmental ethics for seamless synergy amongst the needs of the business, the society, and the planet. Our study used resource-based view (RBV) and dynamic capabilities (DC) theoretical lenses to examine hypotheses derived from extant literature on the linkages amongst environmental ethics, environmental training, environmental performance and competitive advantage. Using survey questionnaire, we employed structural equation modeling (SEM) on 364 valid responses from managers to examine the hypotheses. The findings of our study will stir up researcher's curiosity to unravel the human side of environmental management and that will surely steer future researches in significant directions. Results suggest that environmental ethics influences environmental training, environmental performance and competitive advantage. We also found that environmental training to employees mediates the influence of environmental ethics on firm's environmental performance and competitive advantage. The findings of the study implies that organizational approach towards environmental ethical practices at workplace should be not be reactive but proactive with intentions to create and sustain synergy amongst the triads namely, profits, the society, and the environment. Environmental training should not be one-off event but a continuous process to beat competitions and improve environmental performance in the organization.

BARRIERS TO ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT IN HOTELS IN KWAZULU- NATAL, SOUTH AFRICA

In the last two decades an increasing number of studies have focused on the impacts of tourism development on the environment aimed at the depletion of natural resources, the generation of waste and pollution and general environmental degradation. Consequently, the huge growth in the hotel industry has considerably affected the environment at a global level as the sector consumes large amounts of energy, water and non-durable products. Hotels are therefore now urged to engage in responsible and sustainable environmental management practices. Often hotel managers are keen to engage in responsible environmental practices but are unable to do so due to certain impediments. This article examines the barriers or challenges that are faced in adopting more sustainable and responsible environmental management practices in hotels in KwaZulu- Natal, South Africa. n total, 142 hotels (including hotel chains as one entity) were identified in KwaZulu-Natal and a census approach was adopted, in that all 142 were approached to participate in the study. Sixty hotels responded. Data was collected through a web-based, online survey questionnaire. The findings reveal that hoteliers are faced with a number of barriers in the implementation of environmental management practices. These barriers include lack of knowledge and expertise, lack of resources to implement certain environmental management practices, lack of government assistance, lack of legislation and regulation and high costs. Furthermore, a noteworthy finding is that a number of hotels in KwaZulu-Natal are unaware of the savings potential associated with environmental programmes, that is, the direct benefits to their establishments.

Learning from the past: the role of sacred groves and shrines in environmental management in the Bongo District of Ghana

Sacred natural sites are recognized as one of the most important forms of culture-based conservation strategies for the protection of biodiversity and key ecosystems, especially in rural communities throughout the world. In communities where sacred sites exist, a system of religious beliefs and sociocultural practices are often used to manage and sustain these sites. At present, concerns for future crisis in the natural environment and the threats posed to local cultural identities are becoming very rife and widely discussed among academics and practitioners. This paper is a contribution to ongoing discussions on the role of sacred natural sites to sustainable environmental management practices. Eight sacred groves and shrines in the Bongo District were investigated based on an endogenous development framework. The data were collected using focus group discussions with stakeholders at the local and district levels, and individual interviews with key local natural resource managers from four selected communities. It was revealed that the way indigenous people interact with and safeguard the environment is characterized by a system of worldviews which hinge strongly on some kind of intricate relationships between humans and their immediate environment. In some communities, the traditional institutions are becoming malleable and more willing to embrace, learn and share best environmental management practices from other cultures. We conclude that understanding of past management experiences that have sustained sacred natural sites for millions of years can offer some useful lessons for enhancing current environmental management practices. We recommend ongoing policies should take into account the adept knowledge and values of indigenous communities where resources are located and incorporate them into the management style and strategies in order to enhance sustainability.

The State of Sea Systems and Practices in East and Southern Africa

This paper develops a comparative overview of SEA in Kenya, Tanzania and South Africa regarding legal, institutional and procedural perspectives, in order to assess their effectiveness and unveil main constrains. It is clear from this brief review that SEA is a tool of environmental governance that is of growing importance in East and Southern Africa. With regards to the institutional and legal framework, both Kenya and Tanzania have formal provisions for SEA, but no specific legislation. The main constrains on SEA effectiveness are related to the lack of a clear mandate and institutional framework, guidelines for procedures and public participation. As this analysis and case studies from the three countries examined here reveal, Kenya, Tanzania, and South Africa have expanded their use of SEA as a preventive mechanism for environmental policy and to enhance the efficiency of strategic decisions. While each of these countries has made great strides in developing the SEA process and integrating it into their decision-making processes, much work remains to be done. Ongoing refinement to the SEA process, both within this region and elsewhere in the world, will mean that this important tool integrates sustainable environmental management principles and practices into policies, plans, and programmes and the decision-making process.

Factors influencing corporate pro-environmental behaviour - a case study from the UK construction sector

The need for a more sustainable approach to the management of resources is a key focus for all stakeholders, including organisations. Using a range of qualitative and quantitative approaches within a UK case study construction company, this paper examines the key underlying factors impacting on corporate pro-environmental behaviour. The findings indicate that even though staff generally exhibited strong environmental attitudes and beliefs, these did not always translate into sustainable practices. Based on the findings, strategies on enhancing sustainable environmental management practices within organisations, particularly within the construction sector are also presented.
