ANALISIS KEBERLANJUTAN USAHATANI PADI SAWAH DI KECAMATAN SOREANG KABUPATEN BANDUNG

Rice farming in Soreang district of Bandung Regency face problems that pose a threat to the sustainability of food security. This research objectives is to analyse and assess the sustainability of rice farming in Soreang District with Rapid Appraisal Usahatani Padi (RAP-FARM) using Multidimensional Scaling (MDS) method. Results shows rice farming in Soreang District assessment using RAP-FARM yield 49.07 in sustainability index which can be categorized as less sustainable. Leverage analysis results showed that out of 48 existing attributes, 21 sensitive attributes proven to have influence on the rice farming sustainability index. The perspective analysis shows that there are 6 key factors that have significant influence on wetland rice farming which are: (1) conformity of land usage to the land properties, (2) farmers motivation, (3) organic material usage and utilization of farm waste, (4) freedom from pest infestations and diseases, (5) land fertility, and (6) usage of chemical pesticides. The efforts for improving rice farming in Soreang Regency require a sustainability index value by way of managing and repairing sensitive attributes with attribute 21 focus on improvements of the sensitive 6 key factors attribute against the rice farming.

The application of best management practices increases the profitability and sustainability of rice farming in the central plains of Thailand

There is a need to increase the resource use efficiency and sustainability of rice production in the intensive lowland irrigated rice growing areas of Thailand where farmers face challenges such as the overuse of inputs that cause negative environmental effects, rising input and labor costs, declining rice farm gate prices, and water scarcity. Since 2012, a set of integrated best management practices based on Cost Reduction Operating Principles (CROP) has been promoted to rice farmers by the Thailand Rice Department. Through replicated farmer participatory field trials, we evaluated the performance over three seasons of three integrated best management packages that included CROP recommendations, CROP+alternate wetting and drying (AWD), and CROP+drum seeder (DS) technology and compared these with standard farmer’s practice (FP). We also provide an economic and productivity assessment of the large-scale (160–800ha) application of CROP practices across eight sites in the Chao Phraya river basin. In the field trials, farmers that applied CROP practices reduced fertilizer inputs by a mean of 50–64% per season with no yield penalty and were able to increase their net income versus FP by a mean of 26% across all three seasons. The CROP+DS treatments also reduced seed rates by 60–67% and consistently showed the largest benefits over FP, with increases in mean net income per season in the range of 29–46%. Due to water shortages in the dry season, all treatments followed forced-AWD. However, even with limited water supply, high yields were still attained across all plots, giving farmers the assurance that yields can be maintained with AWD practices. Results from the large-scale application of CROP practices showed farmer groups reduced costs by 6–36% (x¯ =17%) and increased net income by 21–131% (x¯=79%) when compared with the same season in the previous year. The results of these studies indicate that through an increase in income and a decrease in inputs that cause negative environmental impacts, the adoption of improved agronomic practices can enhance the sustainability of intensive rice production.

Sustainability status of technology application on rice farming in peatlands (case study at Kanamit Jaya village, Central Kalimantan)

<p>Peatlands become one of the potential resources that could be developed as an area of rice farming to improve national food security. Agricultural cultivation in peatlands, if not managed well, will contribute to environmental destruction and land degradation, which will ultimately affect land productivity. As a first step in preparing the development of rice farming, research on the application of technology has conducted. This research included water management, which consists of: without water management or control (A0), <em>macak-macak</em> water management (A1) and intermittent water management (A2). Moreover, research on pesticide application was also conducted which consist of: without pesticide application or control (P0), Paraquat herbicide application at the time of tillage (P1), Fenobucarb insecticide applications every week (P2), Fenobucarb insecticide applications every two weeks (P3), Difenoconazole fungicide applications every week (P4), Difenoconazole fungicide applications every two week (P5). This study aims to determine the level of sustainability of rice farming in peatlands, and the dominant factors that influence by considering economic, social and environmental through a Multi Dimensional Scaling (MDS) approach. The analysis shows a quite sustainable level, with score for each dimension is 53.13 for the economic dimension, 69.49 for the ecological dimension and 61.79 for the social dimension. The dominant factors to be considered for the sustainability of rice farming in peatlands are changes in the level of decomposition of organic matter, farming purpose and outreach intensity.</p>

How socially sustainable are the rice farms in mountains? Evidence from Senapati district of Manipur

Sustainable agriculture is regarded as the successful management of resources for agriculture to satisfy the changing human needs while maintaining or enhancing the quality of environment and conserving natural resources. The present study was conducted to examine the social sustainability of rice farming at farm level. A random sample of 80 rice farmers of Senapati (hill) district of Manipur were surveyed and social sustainability index were constructed following the Human Development Index (HDI). Most of the farmers (26%) were educated up to primary level and operational land holding was small (1.08 ha) in the study area. The farms under moderately sustainable category may be improved by providing training to the farmers pertaining to rice cultivation and affiliating them to Self-help Groups (SHGs), co-operative societies. Joint decisions on domestic decisions are common and the farmers had 12 years of experience in rice farming but none of the sample farmers got training in rice cultivation. About 53.33 per cent of the farms were in sustainable category, followed by moderately sustainable category (46.67%) in the study area. The study recommends that efforts for improving social sustainability and training pertaining rice cultivation should be initiated for the farmers and application of organic nutrients, diversified cropping system and conservative tillage practices should be promoted in the study area to augment social sustainability.

Sustainability of Rice Farmers: Farming of Rural Communities in the Spiritual Meaning Perspective of Seed Storage

This research aims to reveal in the spiritual of meaning contained in the farming of rice seed storage of rural communities in the village at Bone-Bone. This research uses a qualitative approach in the phenomenology of perspective and will be interpreted in the definiton of the symbolic interactionism. The result of this research indicates that the stages of the storage that begins with the way collect it in the form of malai rice that has been drained in a small house with called landak. Storage at a its own will be do it because the farmer glamorize the seed of rise with no treat in vain. The seed pf rice who are stored in a place that exalted so that would prevent anyone to overstep and and even stepped deliberately because it was considered not appreciate the seed of the rice which is the source of life. This action effect has meaning that for all beings actually have a close relationship with human life itself, treated well even of plants will be upheld especially if the relationship among humans and other animals is required ethics are maintained so constantly continue in the future, involving the meaning of an action to keep the sustainability of rice farming.

Sustainability of Rice Farming based on Eco-Farming to Face Food Security and Climate Change: Case Study in Jambi Province, Indonesia

The objectif of this study was to analyze index and sustainability status of rice farming carried out by farmers in Jambi Province, Indonesia. The analysis used modification of Rapfish method by using multidimensional scaling (MDS) technic [1]. The analysis of sustainability of rice farming in multidimensional revealed that rice farming carried out by farmers is less sustainable, with the sustainability index is 41.96. Indexs to the dimensions of ecological, economic, socio-cultural and technological sustainability are 48.25: 40.83: 40.97, and 16.46 respectively. This indexs indicate that ecological, economic, and socio-cultural dimensional were less sustainable, and index to the dimensions of technological was not sustainable. According to attribute leveraging analysis shows that there are some aributes as a leverage factor, ie: rice productivity, the usage of organic fertilizers, organic pesticides, and land capability class (for the ecological dimension); the percentage of income to total revenue, the percentage of farmers who live below the poverty line, farmer exchange, government subsidies, availability production facilities, comparative advantage, and the development of rice prices (economic dimension); farmers motivation, the average age of farmers, the adoption rate of technology, the time required for rice farming, rice consumption growth and government policy (socio-cultural dimensions); post-harvest technology, the availability of improved seed, the amount of rice milling, and how to eradicate the pest management (technological dimension).
