Survival prognostic factors for patients with synchronous brain oligometastatic non-small-cell lung carcinoma receiving local therapy.

IntroductionClinical evidence for patients with synchronous brain oligometastatic non-small-cell lung carcinoma is limited. We aimed to summarize the clinical data of these patients to explore the survival prognostic factors for this population.MethodsFrom September 1995 to July 2011, patients with 1–3 synchronous brain oligometastases, who were treated with stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) or surgical resection as the primary treatment, were identified at Shanghai Chest Hospital.ResultsA total of 76 patients (22 patients underwent brain surgery as primary treatment and 54 patients received SRS) were available for survival analysis. The overall survival (OS) for patients treated with SRS and brain surgery as the primary treatment were 12.6 months (95% confidence interval [CI] 10.3–14.9) and 16.4 months (95% CI 8.8–24.1), respectively (adjusted hazard ratio =0.59, 95% CI 0.33–1.07, P=0.08). Among 76 patients treated with SRS or brain surgery, 21 patients who underwent primary tumor resection did not experience a significantly improved OS (16.4 months, 95% CI 9.6–23.2), compared with those who did not undergo resection (11.9 months, 95% CI 9.7–14.0; adjusted hazard ratio =0.81, 95% CI 0.46–1.44, P=0.46). Factors associated with survival benefits included stage I–II of primary lung tumor and solitary brain metastasis.ConclusionThere was no significant difference in OS for patients with synchronous brain oligometastasis receiving SRS or surgical resection. Among this population, the number of brain metastases and stage of primary lung disease were the factors associated with a survival benefit.

Perioperative Predictors of Survival After Liver Transplantation for Familial Amyloid Polyneuropathy in a Portuguese Center.

Liver transplantation (LT) has been the treatment of choice to halt the progression of familial amyloid polyneuropathy (FAP). Few studies have identified prognostic factors for post-LT survival in FAP. Our aim was to assess survival rate and to identify independent factors for survival after LT. This retrospective cohort study of FAP patients transplanted for the first time analyzed 116 transplantations from 2006 to 2014. The median follow-up period was 45.5 months. The overall survival rates at 1 month, 1 year, and 5 years were 89%, 82% and 79%, respectively. On multivariate analysis, only number of red blood cell (RBC) units transfused during surgery, operation time, and body mass index were independent prognostic factors for patient survival. Only 30% of patients were transfused during surgery, and, in these, each RBC unit transfused increased mortality by 53%. The operation time increased mortality by 20% for every 15 minutes of surgery. This study suggests that operation time and RBC transfused are predominant factors affecting post-LT survival in our FAP patients.

Treatment Outcome Following Transarterial Chemoembolization in Advanced Bone and Soft Tissue Sarcomas.

Transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) is used to treat unresectable bone and soft tissue sarcoma (STS) and as a pre-surgical adjuvant treatment. However, its efficiency for advanced STS is undetermined. This study evaluated TACE's efficiency in treating advanced STS and prognostic factors for patient survival. We enrolled 39 patients with unresectable STS who underwent TACE as an alternative treatment during 2010-2014, with overall survival (OS) as the primary end point. Cancer pain was evaluated by visual analogue scores (VAS) before and after TACE procedures. Factors that affect survival were evaluated by multivariate analyses (Cox proportional hazard model). Mean OS after TACE was 23.7±2.1months, with 1-year OS 71.5%, 2-year OS 45.8%, and 3-year OS 32.5%. Lesion number and tumor stage were key predictors of survival. TACE was found to decrease cancer pain VAS and increase relapse interval. Size of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) particle diameter (P=0.03) and imaging response (P=0.044) were also found to affect relapse interval. TACE was an effective treatment for advanced STS, with a 32.5% 3-year OS rate, and led to lower cancer pain VAS and longer relapse intervals than chemoinfusion only. Smaller PVA particles are preferable during the TACE procedure.

The expression and prognostic value of protein tyrosine kinase 6 in early-stage cervical squamous cell cancer.

BackgroundProtein tyrosine kinase 6 (PTK6) is overexpressed in many epithelial tumors and predicts poor prognosis. However, PTK6 expression status and its role in cervical squamous cell cancer are unknown. This study aimed to investigate the expression level and clinical significance of PTK6 in early-stage cervical squamous cell cancer.MethodsQuantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and western blotting analysis were performed to detect PTK6 mRNA and protein expression levels in 10 freshly frozen, early-stage cervical squamous cell cancer specimens and adjacent non-tumorous cervical tissues. The expression of PTK6 was detected using immunohistochemical staining in 150 formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded, early-stage cervical squamous cell cancer sections and 10 normal cervical tissue sections.ResultsThe mRNA and protein levels of PTK6 in cancer tissues were higher than those in adjacent non-tumorous cervical tissues. Immunohistochemical analysis showed that PTK6 was not expressed in normal cervical tissues but was overexpressed in the cytoplasm of cervical squamous cell cancer cells. The level of PTK6 expression was significantly associated with tumor grade (P = 0.020). The 5-year overall survival rate of patients with high PTK6 expression was lower than that of patients with low PTK6 expression (81.3% vs. 96.2%, P = 0.008). Multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that the expression level of PTK6 in cervical squamous cell cancer was an independent prognostic factor for patient survival (hazard ratio = 5.999, 95% confidence interval 1.622–22.191, P < 0.05).ConclusionsPTK6 is overexpressed in cervical squamous cell cancer. Increased PTK6 expression is associated with reduced 5-year overall survival. PTK6 expression is an independent prognostic predictor for cervical cancer.

Ovarian Yolk Sac Tumor: The Experience of a Regional Cancer Center.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinicopathologic characteristics of patients with ovarian yolk sac tumor and the benefit of omentectomy in patients with clinical early-stage disease. The medical records of 66 patients with ovarian yolk sac tumor were reviewed retrospectively. There were 37, 8, 14, and 7 patients with stages I, II, III, and IV disease, respectively. Sixty-five patients received surgery and adjuvant chemotherapy, and 1 had chemotherapy only. The median follow-up was 78 months. The overall 5-year survival rate was 86.0%. Univariate analysis revealed that stage (P = 0 .022), age (P = 0.001), residual tumor (P = 0.036), and satisfactory α-fetoprotein (AFP) decline (defined as normalization of AFP after the first or second cycles of postsurgery chemotherapy, P = 0.006) were significant prognostic factors. Multivariate analysis revealed that satisfactory AFP decline was an independent significant prognostic factor for overall survival (P = 0.028). The postoperative pathology showed that only 1 (2.7%) of 37 patients who received omentectomy without gross spread had omentum metastasis microscopically. The 5-year survival rates were 89.2% and 100.0% for stage I-II patients with (36 cases) or without (9 cases) omentectomy, respectively (P > 0.05). Three of the 7 patients with recurrence were successfully salvaged and lived 38.0, 102.6, and 45.2 months after initial diagnosis. Postsurgery satisfactory AFP decline was an independent significant prognostic factor for patient survival. Omentectomy might not be of therapeutic significance for clinical stage I-II patients.

Abdominal Aortic Aneurysmatic Sac Shrinking is the New Paradigm after Endovascular Treatment

Objectives: Aneurysmal Sac (SAC) absorption after endovascular treatment (EVAR) of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms (AAA) is related to a better prognosis but its long-term mandatory and predictive factors remain unclear. Our study aims to assess the impact of its total resorption on patient survival, as well as the factors that favor resorption. Methods: We followed a187 patients who underwent EVAR with a fully thrombosed SAC for 22 years in the postoperative control of Angio-CT. We established the significance of the factors for SAC resorption by logistic regression models, evaluating comorbidities, diameter, sex and age of the patient. We also compared the impact of absorption sac absorption with survival. Results: Diameter and age were significant for the resorption of the SAC together or even independently (p-value &lt;0.001), the diameter (OR-0.29) showed a greater influence than age (OR= -0.063). The comorbidities studied and the sex of the patients was not statistically significant. Patients who had significant absorption (≥ 10 mm) had a survival rate of 12.72 ± 0.96 years, those with moderate absorption (5 mm to 9 mm) had of 8.34 ± 1.62 years and those without significant resorption or growth had 3.27 ± 0.48 years (p-value &lt;0.001). Among patients with absorption of ≥ 5 mm in the first year, we found greater chances of total absorption (OR=4.72 p-value &lt;0.001). Conclusion: Total sac resorption proved to be an important prognostic factor for patient survival after EVAR. The age of the patient and mainly the initial diameter of the sac were the factors significantly associated with the resorption of the sac.

Specificity protein (Sp) transcription factors Sp1, Sp3 and Sp4 are non-oncogene addiction genes in cancer cells.

Specificity protein (Sp) transcription factor (TF) Sp1 is overexpressed in multiple tumors and is a negative prognostic factor for patient survival. Sp1 and also Sp3 and Sp4 are highly expressed in cancer cells and in this study, we have used results of RNA interference (RNAi) to show that the three TFs individually play a role in the growth, survival and migration/invasion of breast, kidney, pancreatic, lung and colon cancer cell lines. Moreover, tumor growth in athymic nude mice bearing L3.6pL pancreatic cancer cells as xenografts were significantly decreased in cells depleted for Sp1, Sp3 and Sp4 (combined) or Sp1 alone. Ingenuity Pathway Analysis (IPA) of changes in gene expression in Panc1 pancreatic cancer cells after individual knockdown of Sp1, Sp3 and Sp4 demonstrates that these TFs regulate genes and pathways that correlated with the functional responses observed after knockdown but also some genes and pathways that inversely correlated with the functional responses. However, causal IPA analysis which integrates all pathway-dependent changes in all genes strongly predicted that Sp1-, Sp3- and Sp4-regulated genes were associated with the pro-oncogenic activity. These functional and genomic results coupled with overexpression of Sp transcription factors in tumor vs. non-tumor tissues and decreased Sp1 expression with age indicate that Sp1, Sp3 and Sp4 are non-oncogene addiction (NOA) genes and are attractive drug targets for individual and combined cancer chemotherapies.

Low expression of fibulin-1 correlates with unfavorable prognosis in gastric cancer.

The tumor-suppressing role of fibulin-1 has been described in several types of cancers. However, the expression and role of fibulin-1 in the development and progression of gastric cancer (GC) remain largely unknown. In this study, RT-PCR and immunochemistry were used to detect the fibulin-1 expression in GC samples. We have found that the fibulin-1 protein and mRNA levels were downregulated in GC. When investigating the correlation between fibulin-1 expression and clinicopathological characteristics, we have found that low fibulin-1 protein expression was associated with poor tumor differentiation and advanced N stage. Low fibulin-1 protein expression was also an independent prognostic factor for patient survival. To clarify the reason of fibulin-1 downregulation in GC, the mRNA expression and methylation status of fibulin-1 were examined in GC fresh tissue samples (n = 36). We found that the transcriptional expression of fibulin-1 was negatively associated with fibulin-1 promoter hypermethylation, and fibulin-1 hypermethylation was associated with Helicobacter pylori infection. Finally, the effects of fibulin-1 overexpression on cell proliferation and apoptosis were examined. We have found that fibulin-1 overexpression suppressed the growth of GC both in vitro and in vivo and induced apoptosis by increasing cleaved caspase-3 expression. In conclusion, fibulin-1 acts as a tumor suppressor gene, is frequently hypermethylated in GC, and can potentially serve as a useful biomarker for patient prognosis.

Outcomes for patients with HCV after liver transplantation in Korea: a multicenter study.

PurposeHCV-related liver disease is the most common indication for liver transplantation (LT) in Western countries, whereas HCV LT is rare in Korea. We conducted a survey of HCV RNA-positive patients who underwent LT and investigated the prognostic factors for patient survival and the effects of immunosuppression.MethodsWe retrospectively reviewed the multicenter records of 192 HCV RNA-positive patients who underwent LT.ResultsThe 1-, 3-, and 5-year overall survival rates were 78.8%, 75.3%, and 73.1%, respectively. Excluding the cases of hospital mortality (n = 23), 169 patients were evaluated for patient survival. Most patients were genotype 1 (n = 111, 65.7%) or genotype 2 (n = 42, 24.9%). The proportion of living donors for LT (n = 135, 79.9%) was higher than that of deceased donors (deceased donor liver transplantation [DDLT], n = 34, 20.1%). The median donor and recipient ages were 32 years and 56 years, respectively. Twenty-eight patients (16.6%) died during the observation period. Seventy-five patients underwent universal prophylaxis and 15 received preemptive therapy. HCV recurrence was detected in 97 patients. Recipients who were older than 60, received DDLT, used cyclosporine, or suffered acute rejection had lower rates of survival.ConclusionPatent survival rates of HCV patients after LT in Korea were comparable with other countries.

Facial lymph node involvement as a prognostic factor for patient survival in oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma.

To investigate the incidence of metastasis to facial lymph nodes (FLNs) and to determine its impact on the prognosis and survival of patients at onset of oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). A retrospective review of 641 patients with OSCC treated with curative surgery (CS) alone or CS + postoperative radiotherapy (PORT) was performed. Based on FLN status, an analysis of clinicopathologic parameters, prognosis, and survival was conducted. By classifying patients according to FLN status, a reasonable treatment modality was identified in the low-risk group, which was defined as those who had N0-1 disease, negative margin, and no extracapsular nodal spread (ENS). FLN involvement was identified in 103 patients (16%), which showed statistically significant associations with several established risk factors and negatively affected local controls (P < 0.001), neck controls (P < 0.001), and disease-specific survival (P < 0.001). Compared to CS alone, CS + PORT increased the 5-year neck control rate (76.8 vs. 30.7%, P = 0.006) and disease-specific survival rate (67.8 vs. 30.7%, P = 0.037) of the OSCC patients with FLN metastasis in the low-risk group. Metastasis to FLNs is strongly associated with poor disease control and lower survival rate of OSCC patients. PORT minimized the residual risk of involved FLN in the low-risk group.

Evaluation of extracellular matrix protein CCN1 as a prognostic factor for glioblastoma.

Recently, research efforts in identifying prognostic molecular biomarkers for malignant glioma have intensified. Cysteine-rich protein 61 (CCN1) is one of the CCN family of matricellular proteins that promotes cell growth and angiogenesis in cancers through its interaction with several integrins. In this study, we investigated the relationships among CCN1, O(6)-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase expression, the tumor removal rate, and prognosis in 46 glioblastoma patients treated at the Okayama University Hospital. CCN1 expression was high in 31 (67%) of these patients. The median progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) times of patients with high CCN1 expression was significantly shorter than those of patients with low CCN1 expression (p<0.005). In a multivariate Cox analysis, CCN1 proved to be an independent prognostic factor for patient survival [PFS, hazard ratio (HR)=3.53 (1.55-8.01), p=0.003 and OS, HR=3.05 (1.35-6.87), p=0.007]. Moreover, in the 31 patients who underwent gross total resection, the PFS and OS times of those with high CCN1 expression were significantly shorter than those with low CCN1 expression. It was concluded that CCN1 might emerge as a significant prognostic factor regarding the prognosis of glioblastoma patients.

High expression of XPA confers poor prognosis for nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients treated with platinum-based chemoradiotherapy.

In this study, we tried to explore if xeroderma pigmentosum complementation group-A (XPA) expression is likely a prognostic prediction factor for locally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients treated with platinum-based chemoradiotherapy, which was considered to bring chemotherapy-related severe toxicity compared with radiotherapy alone. Firstly, MTT assay revealed that downregulating XPA expression in NPC HONE1 and CNE1 cells decreased IC50 of cisplatin and sensitized cells to cisplatin. XPA expression was detected by immunohistochemistry in cancer tissues from locally advanced NPC patients treated with platinum-based chemoradiotherapy. The relationships between XPA expression and clinicopathologic features, overall survival and progression-free survival of patients were evaluated. The results showed that XPA expression was not associated with clinicopathologic parameters, but was likely an independent prognostic factor for patient survival. High XPA level predicts a poor prognosis, and the prediction values were higher in subgroups of younger, higher EBV antibody titer, or treated with concurrent chemoradiotherapy. Combining XPA levels and T/N classifications, we successfully classified these patients into low, medium and high risk groups for platinum-based chemoradiotherapy. These findings suggest that XPA levels may be a potential predictor of prognosis in locally advanced NPC patients treated with platinum-based chemoradiotherapy, and helpful for selecting patients likely to need and benefit from this treatment in future.

Long-term therapy with temozolomide is a feasible option for newly diagnosed glioblastoma: a single-institution experience with as many as 101 temozolomide cycles.

The objective of this study was to report the authors' experience with the long-term administration of temozolomide (TMZ; > 6 cycles, up to 101) in patients with newly diagnosed glioblastoma and to analyze its feasibility and safety as well as its impact on survival. The authors also compared data obtained from the group of patients undergoing long-term TMZ treatment with data from patients treated with a standard TMZ protocol. A retrospective analysis was conducted of 37 patients who underwent operations for glioblastoma between 2004 and 2012. Volumetric analysis of postoperative Gd-enhanced MR images, obtained within 48 hours, confirmed tumor gross-total resection (GTR) in all but 2 patients. All patients received the first cycle of TMZ at a dosage of 150 mg/m(2) starting on the second or third postsurgical day. Afterward, patients received concomitant radiochemotherapy according to the Stupp protocol. With regard to adjuvant TMZ therapy, the 19 patients in Group A, aged 30-72 years (mean 56.1 years), received 150 mg/m(2) for 5 days every 28 days for more than 6 cycles (range 7-101 cycles). The 18 patients in Group B, aged 46-82 years (mean 64.8 years), received the same dose, but for no more than 6 cycles. O(6)-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) promoter methylation status was analyzed for both groups and correlated with overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS). The impact of age, sex, Karnofsky Performance Scale score, and Ki 67 staining were also considered. All patients but 1 in Group A survived at least 18 months (range 18-101 months), and patients in Group B survived no more than 17 months (range 2-17 months). The long-term survivors (Group A), defined as patients who survived at least 12 months after diagnosis, were 51.3% of the total (19/37). Kaplan-Meier curve analysis showed that patients treated with more than 6 TMZ cycles had OS and PFS that was significantly longer than patients receiving standard treatment (median OS 28 months vs 8 months, respectively; p = 0.0001; median PFS 20 months vs 4 months, respectively; p = 0.0002). By univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression analysis, MGMT methylation status and number of TMZ cycles appeared to be survival prognostic factors in patients with glioblastoma. After controlling for MGMT status, highly significant differences related to OS and PFS between patients with standard and long-term TMZ treatment were still detected. Furthermore, in Group A and B, the statistical correlation of MGMT status to the number of TMZ cycles showed a significant difference only in Group A patients, suggesting that MGMT promoter methylation was predictive of response for long-term TMZ treatment. Prolonged therapy did not confer hematological toxicity or opportunistic infections in either patient group. This study describes the longest experience so far reported with TMZ in patients with newly diagnosed glioblastomas, with as many as 101 cycles, who were treated using GTR. Statistically significant data confirm that median survival correlates with MGMT promoter methylation status as well as with the number of TMZ cycles administered. Long-term TMZ therapy appears feasible and safe.

Morbidity, mortality and analysis of prognostic factors for colorectal cancer

This study analyzed morbidity, mortality and prognostic factors for patient survival in a single center collective of patients with colorectal cancer and a high follow-up rate. A total of 698 consecutive patients were included in this study. Data were collected prospectively. Descriptive and survival analyses as well as Cox regression analyses were performed to identify factors for morbidity, mortality and prognostic factors for survival. At presentation 78.8 % of the colon cancer patients and 83.5 % of rectal cancer patients showed symptomatic disease and 6.5 % of patients underwent an emergency procedure. Mortality was 3.6 %, morbidity was 42.7 % and 4.3 % of patients developed an anastomotic leakage with the need of reoperation. In spite of the regular application of a fast-track program, 10 % of patients had a prolonged duration of bowel paralysis. In patients with colon cancer there were no differences between overall survival (OAS) and disease-free survival, whereas there was a significant difference in patients with rectal cancer. The mean survival of all patients was 65.39 ± 1.722 months. The ASA score, cardiovascular disease, number of metastatic lymph nodes, lymph node ratio, residual tumor and general or surgery-associated complications were strongly independent influencing factors on OAS. A Cox analysis revealed age at diagnosis and microscopic residual tumor (TNM R1) as highly significant influencing factors on OAS. Other significant factors of influence on OAS were development of general or surgery-associated complications and the presence of cardiovascular diseases. Cardiovascular disease leads to a higher morbidity rate whereas age, International Union Against Cancer (UICC) stage, R-status, lymphatic spread and occurrence of complications are important prognostic factors for survival.

Transducin β-like 1 X-linked receptor 1 suppresses cisplatin sensitivity in nasopharyngeal carcinoma via activation of NF-κB pathway.

BackgroundTransducin β-like 1 X-linked receptor 1 (TBL1XR1) is an important transcriptional cofactor involved in the regulation of many signaling pathways, and is associated with carcinogenesis and tumor progression. However, the precise role of TBL1XR1 in these processes is not well understood.MethodsWe detected the expression of TBL1XR1 protein and mRNA in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) cell lines and biopsies by western blotting, real-time PCR and immunohistochemical staining (IHC). Overexpression of TBL1XR1 in NPC enhanced chemoresistance to cisplatin using two NPC cell lines in vitro and in vivo.ResultsTBL1XR1 was upregulated in NPC cell lines and clinical samples. The expression of TBL1XR1 was correlated with several clinicopathological factors including clinical stage, T classification, N classification and patient survival. Univariate and multivariate analysis revealed that TBL1XR1 was an independent prognostic factor for patient survival. In vitro and in vivo studies demonstrated that TBL1XR1 high expression induced resistance to cisplatin-induced apoptosis in NPC cells. Furthermore, we found that TBL1XR1 activated the NF-κB pathway and promoted transcription of genes downstream of NF-κB, especially anti-apoptotic genes.ConclusionsUpregulation of TBL1XR1 induces NPC cells resistance to cisplatin by activating the NF-κB pathway, and correlates with poor overall survival of NPC patients. Head and neck sarcomas: analysis of the SEER database.

To summarize the epidemiology of sarcomas occurring in the head and neck and identify prognostic factors for patient survival. Cross-sectional analysis of the National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) program. The SEER 18 registries, comprising sarcoma diagnoses made from 1973 to 2010, were queried for sarcomas arising in the head and neck. Pediatric and adult patients were analyzed separately, and multivariate and propensity-matched analyses were performed to identify predictors of disease-specific survival. In all, 11,481 adult cases and 1244 pediatric cases were identified. In adults, the most common histologic subtypes were malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH), Kaposi sarcoma, and hemangiosarcoma, while in the pediatric cohort, the most common histologic subtypes were rhabdomyosarcoma, MFH, and osteosarcoma. Cause-specific 2-, 5-, and 10-year survival rates were 76%, 66%, and 61% for adults and 84%, 73%, and 71% for pediatric patients. Multivariate analysis performed for adults revealed that male gender, absence of radiation therapy, and stage I disease were associated with improved cause-specific survival reaching statistical significance. However, a propensity-matched model demonstrated no significant difference in cause-specific survival between patients who received radiation and those who did not. Sarcomas, a heterogeneous group of malignant mesenchymal tumors, are uncommonly found in the head and neck. This study represents the largest analysis of patients with head and neck sarcomas in the literature and demonstrates the impact of age, gender, primary site, histology, and radiation status on overall prognosis.

ILEI: a novel marker for epithelial-mesenchymal transition and poor prognosis in colorectal cancer.

Accumulating evidence over the past decade has shown that abnormal activation of epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) contributes to tumour progression and metastasis in colorectal cancer (CRC). In this study, we investigated the expression of interleukin-like EMT inducer (ILEI) and EMT-associated markers (E-cadherin, vimentin) in CRC tissues and determined the correlations between ILEI expression and clinicopathological characteristics, prognosis and EMT in CRC. In total, 194 patients diagnosed with CRC based on histopathological evaluation and those subjected to surgical resection at the First Hospital of China Medical University between 2003 and 2005 were examined. Immunohistochemical staining for ILEI, vimentin and E-cadherin was performed for each specimen. Cytoplasmic overexpression of ILEI usually accompanied down-regulation of E-cadherin and positive expression of vimentin. Conversely, ILEI was simultaneously down-regulated with overexpression of E-cadherin and negative expression of vimentin. ILEI overexpression was associated significantly with T-stage, N-stage, TNM stage and EMT phenotype (P=0.024, <0.001, <0.001 and <0.001, respectively). Multivariate analysis revealed that ILEI expression was an independent prognostic factor for patient survival. Our findings indicate that cytoplasmic ILEI expression is a potential marker of EMT and tumour progression in CRC. ILEI is an independent predictive factor associated with poor prognosis in CRC.
