Transportation is a system consisting of certain facilities along with the flow and control system that allows people or goods to move from one place to another efficiently at any time to support human activities. Indonesia as a developing country certainly has a very rapid development of services in the fields of land, sea and air transportation. Transportation owned by the Indonesian Nation certainly has innovations from past to present in order to advance transportation services, one of which is an online provider company. Online transportation companies offer transportation services such as online motorcycle taxis, online taxis, delivery of goods, food delivery and so on, thus making this service in demand by many people. Likewise in Kupang City where there are several online transportation options, one of which is Maxim car transportation which has the advantage of being quite cheap. The high demand for Maxim online transportation in Kupang City has an impact on the fatigue experienced by online transportation drivers. One of them is also felt by Maxim Mobil drivers. Based on the researcher's initial survey of Maxim drivers in Kupang city, fatigue often occurs in Maxim Car drivers due to the increase in Maxim Car users in Kupang City. This type of research is quantitative using analytic survey method and cros sectional research design. The sample in this study amounted to 81 respondents from a total population of 430 drivers selected using accidental sampling method. The results showed that there was no significant relationship between physical load and work fatigue and there was a significant relationship between mental load and fatigue in maxim car drivers in Kupang City.

Differences in PCV13 Recommendation Practices between Pediatric Care Providers and Primary Care Providers in China: A Cross-Sectional Survey of Behavior and Social Drivers.

Objectives: This study examines the recommendation behaviors and influencing factors for the 13-valent Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine (PCV13) among 3579 Chinese healthcare workers (HCWs), including 1775 pediatric care providers (Peds-PCPs) and 1804 primary care providers (PCPs). Data were collected from May to July 2023 through a national cross-sectional survey using a structured questionnaire, distributed across hospitals providing pediatric services in five provincial-level administrative divisions. Methods: The sociodemographic data, vaccine knowledge, and recommendation practices were analyzed using Pearson's chi-square test, Wilcoxson rank-sum test, and multivariate logistic regression. Results show that while PCPs are more likely to recommend PCV13, vaccine hesitancy persists among Peds-PCPs. Logistic regression revealed that higher influenza vaccination intention, salary, vaccine consultation frequency, familiarity with immunization, work ethic, and flexible schedules positively impacted HCWs' recommendation behavior. Results: Factors influencing Peds-PCPs' recommendations include vaccine training (OR: 1.470, CI: 1.049-2.509), safety recognition (OR: 1.986, CI: 1.163-3.391), concern over rejection (OR = 1.274, CI: 1.076-1.508) and vaccine cost (OR = 1.203, CI: 1.023-1.414). For PCPs, influencing factors were the perceived susceptibility of children to pneumonia (OR = 2.185, CI: 1.074-4.445), acceptance of herd immunity (OR: 1.717, CI: 1.101-2.677), and belief that parents with better family conditions are more likely to accept vaccine recommendations (OR = 1.229, CI: 1.024-1.477). Conclusion: This survey underscores the need for tailored interventions to address differing perceptions and enhance confidence in the safety and efficacy of vaccines among HCWs, particularly Peds-PCPs.

Drivers’ Knowledge, Attitude and Practices Towards Traffic Rules and Regulations

Research frequently reports that the majority of crashes (up to 80%), are the fault of drivers. Further, the WHO reports that most fatal crashes occur in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). In LMIC, including Pakistan, most drivers have low levels of knowledge about traffic rules and regulations, have negative attitudes towards rules and regulations and often violate road safety rules. This study used a structured survey of drivers in Karachi, Pakistan (n=260). Most respondents were aware that helmet use for motorbike riders is compulsory (74.6%), agreed it was important to follow road signs (74.2%) and wear a seat belt (64.6%). However, over half did not know the speed limit in residential areas (54.6%) and almost half considered drug use when driving was not dangerous or were against the penalty or fine for violation of traffic laws (45.4%). In addition, 45.8% of all drivers thought driving licenses were unnecessary. This study suggests there may be low levels of driver knowledge of certain road rules (e.g. speed limit), negative attitudes about certain safe driving practices (drug driving), and low levels of value placed on driving license in Karachi, Pakistan. Analysis suggest that knowledge and attitude affect driver practices in Karachi, Pakistan. Strengthening enforcement and related public communication measures about traffic rules and greater penalties that are sufficiently deterring for the violators of the traffic rules is needed. There must also be a formal mechanism to issue the driving licence after a proper test of the knowledge of road rules and driving following those rules.

Unravelling large-scale patterns and drivers of biodiversity in dry rivers

More than half of the world’s rivers dry up periodically, but our understanding of the biological communities in dry riverbeds remains limited. Specifically, the roles of dispersal, environmental filtering and biotic interactions in driving biodiversity in dry rivers are poorly understood. Here, we conduct a large-scale coordinated survey of patterns and drivers of biodiversity in dry riverbeds. We focus on eight major taxa, including microorganisms, invertebrates and plants: Algae, Archaea, Bacteria, Fungi, Protozoa, Arthropods, Nematodes and Streptophyta. We use environmental DNA metabarcoding to assess biodiversity in dry sediments collected over a 1-year period from 84 non-perennial rivers across 19 countries on four continents. Both direct factors, such as nutrient and carbon availability, and indirect factors such as climate influence the local biodiversity of most taxa. Limited resource availability and prolonged dry phases favor oligotrophic microbial taxa. Co-variation among taxa, particularly Bacteria, Fungi, Algae and Protozoa, explain more spatial variation in community composition than dispersal or environmental gradients. This finding suggests that biotic interactions or unmeasured ecological and evolutionary factors may strongly influence communities during dry phases, altering biodiversity responses to global changes.

COVID-19 and speeding: Results of population-based survey of ontario drivers

Introduction: During COVID-19, increased speeding was observed in many jurisdictions. Yet, evidence is limited on what factors predicted increased speeding during the pandemic. This study’s purpose was to examine speeding, and person and situation factors associated with increased speeding since the start of the pandemic. Methods: An online panel survey sampled 1,595 drivers using sex, age, and region quota sampling and weighting to approximate the Ontario, Canada adult population. Measures included: (1) person factors: socio-demographics (age, sex, region); psychological trait of risk propensity (Competitive Attitudes Toward Driving Scale (CATDS)); psychological states (distress - general and COVID-19-related); and behaviors (kilometers driven, alcohol use, police stops and collisions); and (2) COVID-19-related situation factors: perceived changes in (traffic volume, police enforcement). Results: 67.2% of respondents reported speeding; 7.2% reported increased speeding since the start of the pandemic. Bivariate analyses indicated that person factors of younger age, male sex, higher CATDS, higher distress, more alcohol use, more kilometers traveled, police stops, and collisions since the start of the pandemic were associated with increased speeding. Situation factor of perceived less traffic volume since the start of the pandemic was associated with increased speeding. Logistic regression analysis identified odds of reported increased speeding during the pandemic was significantly higher for drivers with higher scores on the CATDS, higher kilometers traveled, and more alcohol use during the pandemic. Conclusions: These findings suggest that higher risk propensity as well as the more kilometers driven and increased alcohol consumption were risk factors for increased speeding. Practical Applications: COVID-19-related factors of lower traffic volume and enforcement are less predictive of increased speeding than driver personality and pandemic-related behaviors of more driving and drinking. Interventions to reduce speeding still need to focus on these person factors through education, enforcement, and strong sanctions for speeding.

COVID-19 and economic preferences: Evidence from a panel of cab drivers

This paper studies the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on risk and time preferences. Using a longitudinal dataset from a survey of cab drivers in Lima (Peru), we document a significant increase in risk tolerance and patience. The changes are heterogeneous and monotonic by age: older cohorts become more risk-taking while younger ones become more patient. Our findings suggest that the pandemic could have affected individuals’ behavior and socioeconomic outcomes via another channel, namely, changes in economic preferences.

Prescribing antibiotics prudently—A survey of policy implementation drivers among physicians and veterinarians

BackgroundAs the antimicrobial resistance (AMR) problem accelerates, humans and animals are suffering from the consequences of infections with diminishing antimicrobial treatment options. Within the One Medicine and One Health mandate, which denotes a collaborative, multisectoral, and transdisciplinary approach to improve medicine and health across human and animal sectors, we investigate how human and veterinary medical practitioners apply their medical and policy knowledge in prescribing antimicrobials. Different regions and locations establish different intermediary policies and programs to support clinicians in that pursuit. In Hong Kong, there are locally adapted programs at governance and clinical levels in the human medical field. However, there is no locally adapted veterinary antibiotic prescription guideline or stewardship program, and veterinarians adopt overseas or international professions' antimicrobial use guidelines. Such a policy environment creates a natural experiment to compare local policy implementation conditions and clinicians' knowledge, perception, and practice. MethodWe construct the investigative survey tool by adaptation of Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice (KAP) and Capacity, Opportunity, and Motivation-Behavior (COMB) models. We identify, compare and contrast factors that influence clinicians' antimicrobial prescription behavior. The factors are considered both intrinsically, such as personal attributes, and extrinsically, such as societal and professional norms. FindingsThe absence of locally adopted antimicrobial guidelines influences AMR stewardship program implementation in local Hong Kong veterinary community. As medical allies, physicians and veterinarians share similar demographic influence, organization considerations and perception of public awareness. Both cohorts prescribe more prudently with more years-in-practice, time available to communicate with patients or caretakers, and public awareness and support.

When Do Users Prefer Voice Control Systems in Vehicles? A Survey of Chinese Drivers

Voice control systems (VCSs) are becoming increasingly common in modern vehicles, but concerns are still expressed by drivers about adopting them in smart cockpits. Previous research on privacy and recognition accuracy may not fully address users’ needs with regard to VCSs. In addition, studies on the safety impacts of different interaction modalities may not reveal drivers’ preference for interaction modalities, given that driver choice may not be solely based on interaction safety. Thus, to better understand and optimize VCSs design, an online survey was conducted in China to investigate drivers’ choices between VCSs and manual interaction. In total, we analyzed 168 drivers’ preferred interaction modality (i.e., either VCSs or manual interaction) in different scenarios defined by passenger presence (i.e., present versus absent), traffic complexity (i.e., low versus high traffic density), roadway type (i.e., urban road versus highway), and task characteristics (i.e., six in-vehicle interaction tasks). Compared with manual interactions, drivers preferred VCSs when driving alone, driving on highways, and driving in complex traffic. Further, drivers preferred VCSs when in-vehicle tasks were more distracting and time-demanding (e.g., compiling a text message). The preference for interaction modalities could also be affected by the characteristics of drivers: those with lower driving frequencies and higher VCSs familiarity and those who perceived higher VCSs usability tended to choose VCSs as an interaction modality for in-vehicle interaction tasks. These findings offer insights for adaptive interface design and future optimization of VCSs.

Integration of Advanced Sri Practices Into the European Asset Management Industry: A Survey of Drivers

Sustainable and responsible investment (SRI) has experienced impressive growth in the last two decades. However, the adoption of advanced SRI strategies that go beyond the mere exclusion of companies or asset classes has not kept pace with this expansion, a critical development regarding its potential impact on sustainability. For this reason, this study aims to identify the main drivers for the adoption of advanced sustainable and responsible investment practices by asset management companies to know why and which companies better advance the strengthening of SRI in the European financial market considering an original combination of different SRI drivers. To investigate which factors seem to be more decisive in adopting more sophisticated SRI practices, we first conducted a survey among fund management companies that manage and/or distribute investment funds in Europe. Second, we used logistic and multivariate regressions as analytical tools for testing the hypotheses. Results show that societal pressures and a formal corporate social responsibility policy are the main drivers for adopting advanced SRI practices by asset management companies.

WAR AS A CHALLENGE TO ROAD SAFETY: DAMAGE TO SOCIETY AND THE ECONOMY OF UKRAINE

Purpose of the article. Russia's armed aggression against Ukraine has become a real challenge and threat to Ukrainian society in various aspects of life. The lack of financial resources due to the defensive nature of the economy caused by the war makes it difficult to ensure road safety in Ukraine and to prevent deaths and injuries on the roads. The topical issue of the state of road safety in Ukraine is also related to its European integration course, as road safety is a priority European policy task for EU member states. The aim of this article is to conduct a criminological analysis of the state of road safety in Ukraine during the war, and to determine the damage caused by road traffic injuries and fatalities to the Ukrainian economy and society as a whole, taking into account the war situation. Research conclusion. The assessment of the state of road safety in Ukraine is based on official statistical information from the General Prosecutor's Office and the Department of Patrol Police, and the theoretical conclusions are based on the results of an anonymous survey of Ukrainian drivers on their compliance with traffic rules. The study of the level of road traffic accidents with fatalities and injuries in Ukraine has shown that the state of road safety deteriorated during the war in comparison with the pre-war period. The impact of the war on this condition is diverse and depends on the dislocation of the region in Ukraine and the intensity of combat operations in a given area. It has been established that among the factors significantly influencing the quantitative and qualitative indicators of violations in the field of road safety during the war, the most significant are the destruction of objects of road and transport infrastructure, a decrease in the effectiveness of patrol police activities, the construction of road fortifications, etc. The article also reveals the characteristics of the road safety system in wartime, emphasising the inadmissibility of extrapolating the state of road safety from the pre-war period to wartime, including in the direction of preventing violations in this area.

Experts’ Evaluations and Opinions Concerning Deployment of Connected and Autonomous Vehicles

Connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs) afford the possibility of improving the transportation system by reducing traffic congestion and accidents. They also can increase employment and shopping opportunities for persons who cannot drive. During the early stages of use, CAVs will have to share the roadways with human-driven vehicles (HDVs), necessitating effective communication among CAVs and HDVs about their intentions and future actions. We previously reported results of a survey of drivers that assessed their knowledge of CAVs and thoughts about their deployment. In the present study, we describe the evaluations and opinions of CAV experts from academia, industry, and government obtained from in-depth interviews.

Evaluation of Driver Comprehension and Compliance of Red-Colored Pavement Markings for Transit Lanes in Portland, Oregon

Many U.S. agencies have experimented with red-colored pavement markings in transit lanes to enhance the message that they are restricted to transit vehicles. This study evaluated nontransit drivers’ comprehension of and compliance with red-colored lane markings in transit priority lanes intended to communicate lane restrictions and appropriate turning and merging locations. Two complementary research methods were used: 1) an online survey of drivers’ comprehension of red-colored pavement markings, and 2) evaluation of video collected at locations pre and post installation of red-colored pavement markings. In the survey, most drivers recognized the red pavement color as a restriction on use, but most did not associate it specifically with transit, or understand the intended meaning of the broken red bar patterns designed to designate a merge area. However, we observed relatively high compliance rates with the transit lane restrictions, and the red pavement coloring was generally associated with improved compliance. Of the 22,803 vehicles observed at these locations, 206 were observed driving in the transit lanes, accounting for a violation rate of 0.9%. For the locations with pre and post data, driving-in-transit-lane violations were either reduced or there was no significant change. For locations with shared turn and transit lanes, between 62% and 76% of drivers merged as intended, and we observed an increase in appropriate merging behavior with the addition of red pavement color.

Can job stress, health status and risky driving behaviours predict the crash risk level of taxi drivers? New evidence from China

Despite statistics indicating that China has the world’s largest taxi industry, there exists limited research about the relationship between workplace health hazards and taxi driver occupational crashes. In this paper, a cross-sectional survey of taxi drivers in four typical Chinese cities was conducted, and data on their self-reported job stress, health status, and daily risky driving behaviours, together with crash involvement experience in the two years before the survey was collected. Three hypotheses were then developed, and they were verified via multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) that the seriousness of drivers’ health problems and the frequency of their daily risky driving behaviours could be the accurate predictor of their crash risk of taxi drivers. These factors were subsequently substituted in a bivariate negative binomial (BNB) distribution model to determine the joint rate of at-fault taxi drivers’ involvement in property-damage-only (PDO) and personal-injury (PI) crashes. The results offer some useful advice for policy development to decrease and prevent professional taxi drivers from causing severe traffic crashes.

Automation Enables Specialization: Field Evidence

Becker and Murphy proposed that task specialization raises productivity but is limited by the costs of coordinating workers. We propose that automation enables workers to specialize without coordination costs. To the extent that the cost of effort exhibits increasing differences, workers increase effort in nonautomated tasks and productivity. The proposition is supported by a field experiment among supermarket cashiers. Conventionally, supermarket cashiers perform two tasks: scanning purchases and collecting payment. Cashiers exhibited increasing differences in the cost of effort: when they scanned faster, they took longer to collect payments. We rotated cashiers between the conventional job design and one in which they specialized in scanning. The new job design increased cashier productivity in scanning by more than 10%. The faster scanning was not due to customer sorting or cashier learning. The proposition is also validated by a survey of taxi drivers. Drivers who reported that difficulties in finding their way affected their driving were more likely to use map apps. This paper was accepted by Alfonso Gambardella, business strategy. This article analyzes drivers' psychophysiological perception of information on the road and the advantages of using means of automatic use of signs (TSR). A survey of drivers was conducted on the road section where traffic organization changed. The drivers were chosen with different driving experiences, age categories, and needs for using the car, but they used the road section under investigation even before its reconstruction. Drivers of vehicles by age category were divided into three categories: under 25 years of age (category 1), 42% of drivers aged 26 to 50 years (category 2), and 19% of drivers aged 50 and older (category 3). It was established that 47% of the first drivers' category use automatic road sign recognition tools, 31% of the second category use the TSR system, and only 22% of the third category use the road sign recognition system. Four new road signs were installed during the development of the design schemes for organizing traffic in the middle section at a distance of 50 m. Based on this, an additional survey was conducted on drivers' memorization of specific new signs installed on the investigated section of the road. The results of the survey of drivers of different age categories were taken into account. It was studied that the most perceived number of road signs for the third category of drivers are observed at a distance of 50 to 150 m. At a distance of 50 to 150 m, they concentrate their attention, and after 150 m, they forget about the changed scheme in the traffic organization. In conclusion, drivers, getting used to traffic routes, lose vigilance, and pay less attention to existing information signals, which causes them to make wrong decisions when changing traffic organization on certain road sections. It is proposed to use automatic road sign recognition tools that are not affected by external and internal factors to increase the reliability of drivers and ensure road safety.

Sociotechnical Factors Supporting Mobile Phone Use by Bus Drivers

OCCUPATIONAL APPLICATIONS Results of a survey of drivers working for two bus companies in Norway suggest that 20% of drivers sometimes use a mobile phone while driving, even though it is not permitted. Sociotechnical analysis of the system surrounding drivers at one of the companies elicited ways in which social and technical factors combined to support mobile phone use by bus drivers. These factors were arranged under four themes: increased societal dependence on technology; developments in bus driver culture; the need for bus drivers to resolve conflicting goals; and a lack of belief in adverse consequences of using mobile phone while driving. Our findings (i) support claims that driver-centered analyses of mobile phone use or other traffic safety challenges are an insufficient basis for the development of measures and should be supplemented by sociotechnical analyses; and (ii) can inspire the design of more comprehensive measures to help reduce mobile phone use and road safety risks.

Identifying Alternative Occupations for Truck Drivers Displaced Due to Autonomous Vehicles by Leveraging the O*NET Database

Automation continues to be a disruptive force in the workforce. In particular, new automated technologies are projected to replace many mid-skill jobs, potentially displacing millions of workers. Career planning agencies and other organizations can help support workers if they are able to effectively identify optimal transition occupations for displaced workers. We drew upon the 24.2 Occupational Information Network (O*NET) Database to conduct two related studies that identify alternate occupations for truck drivers, who are at risk of job loss due to the adoption of autonomous vehicles. In Study 1, we statistically compared the jobs that we identified based on different search methods using O*NET classifications based on their similarity to the knowledge, skills, values, and interests held by truck drivers. In Study 2, we conducted a survey of truck drivers to evaluate their perceptions of the occupations identified as objectively similar to their occupation. Results indicate that optimal transition occupations may be identified by searching for occupations that share skills as well as the same work activities/industry as a given occupation. These findings hold further implications for career planning organizations and policymakers to ease workforce disruption due to automation.

Safety and security perceptions in informal transport: the case of Tunisia

This study aims to evaluate the perception of safety and security in informal transport in Tunisia. This research employs a questionnaire-based survey of passengers and drivers of informal transport in Tunisia. Interviews were conducted with 215 informal transport Tunisian drivers and 255 Tunisian passengers, all above 18 years of age. Analyses have been made by employing several multivariate statistical analyses. Results showed that personal attributes of informal transport drivers influence their decision to violate traffic laws and to display risky driving behaviors. It was also found that driver skills, personality, education, experience, quality of the car, and information about the road congestion are the main factors influencing safety and security in informal transport. Non-compliance with the law by informal drivers leads to aberrant habits and behaviors as well as to a driving style beyond recognized standards. Informal drivers, police and local authorities are the parties involved in the low safety and security aspects of informal transport. It can be concluded that this study underlines that improving safety and security in informal transport cannot be achieved without improving awareness of the role of traffic laws and the need for their enforcement.
