Calibrations and Performance of the Airborne Cloud Extinction Probe

Abstract A new airborne instrument that measures extinction coefficient β in clouds and precipitation has been designed by Environment Canada. The cloud extinction probe (CEP) utilizes the transmissometric method, which is based on direct measurement of light attenuation between the transmitter and receiver. Transmissometers are known to be susceptible to forward scattering, which becomes increasingly significant as the particle size increases. A new technique for calibrating transmissometers was developed here in order to determine the response function of the probe. Laboratory calibrations show that CEP-derived β may be underestimated by a factor of 2 for circular particles with diameters greater than 100 μm. Results for spherical particles are in good agreement with theoretical predictions. For nonspherical particles, however, estimates of β can deviate significantly from those derived for spheres that have the same projected area. For in situ observations of ice particles, CEP measurements often deviate significantly from theoretical calculations, whereas for small cloud droplets agreement is good. It is hypothesized that CEP-derived estimates of β for ice clouds depend much on variations in the scattering phase function that arise from details in ice crystal surface roughness and fine crystal structure. This would complicate greatly the estimation of β from transmissometers for ice-bearing clouds.

Comparison of PARASOL Observations with Polarized Reflectances Simulated Using Different Ice Habit Mixtures

AbstractInsufficient knowledge of the habit distribution and the degree of surface roughness of ice crystals within ice clouds is a source of uncertainty in the forward light scattering and radiative transfer simulations of ice clouds used in downstream applications. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) collection-5 ice microphysical model presumes a mixture of various ice crystal shapes with smooth facets, except for the compact aggregate of columns for which a severely rough condition is assumed. When compared with Polarization and Anisotropy of Reflectances for Atmospheric Sciences coupled with Observations from a Lidar (PARASOL) polarized reflection data, simulations of polarized reflectance using smooth particles show a poor fit to the measurements, whereas very rough-faceted particles provide an improved fit to the polarized reflectance. In this study a new microphysical model based on a mixture of nine different ice crystal habits with severely roughened facets is developed. Simulated polarized reflectance using the new ice habit distribution is calculated using a vector adding–doubling radiative transfer model, and the simulations closely agree with the polarized reflectance observed by PARASOL. The new general habit mixture is also tested using a spherical albedo differences analysis, and surface roughening is found to improve the consistency of multiangular observations. These results are consistent with previous studies that have used polarized reflection data. It is suggested that an ice model incorporating an ensemble of different habits with severely roughened surfaces would potentially be an adequate choice for global ice cloud retrievals.

Uncertainties Associated With the Surface Texture of Ice Particles in Satellite-Based Retrieval of Cirrus Clouds—Part I: Single-Scattering Properties of Ice Crystals With Surface Roughness

Surface roughness of ice crystals is a morphological parameter important to the scattering characteristics of these particles. The intent of this paper, reported in two parts (hereafter, Parts I and II), is to investigate the accuracy associated with some simplifications in calculating the single-scattering properties of roughened ice crystals and to quantify the effect of surface roughness on the retrieval of the optical and microphysical properties of ice clouds from satellite observations. In Part I, two ray-tracing schemes, a rigorous algorithm and an approximate algorithm with a simplified treatment of surface roughness, are employed to calculate the single-scattering properties of randomly oriented hexagonal ice crystals with size parameters in the geometric optics regime. With the rigorous approach, it requires substantial computational effort to accurately account for the multiple external reflections between various roughness facets and the reentries of outgoing rays into the particles in the ray-tracing computation. With the simplified ray-tracing scheme, the ray-tracing calculation for roughened particles is similar to that for smooth particles except that, in the former case, the normal of the particle surface is statistically perturbed for each reflection-refraction event. The simplified ray-tracing scheme can account for most the effects of surface roughness on particle single-scattering properties without incurring substantial demand on computational resources and, thus, provides an efficient way to compute the single-scattering properties of roughened particles. The effect of ice-crystal surface roughness on the retrieval of the optical thicknesses and effective particle sizes of cirrus clouds is reported in Part II.
