Osseointegration of implant surfaces in metabolic syndrome and type-2 diabetes mellitus.

This in vivo study evaluated the bone healing response around endosteal implants with varying surface topography/chemistry in a preclinical, large transitional model induced with metabolic syndrome (MS) and type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Fifteen Göttingen minipigs were randomly distributed into two groups: (i) control (normal diet, n = 5) and (ii) O/MS (cafeteria diet for obesity induction, n = 10). Following obesity induction, five minipigs from the obese/metabolic syndrome(O/MS) group were further allocated, randomly, into the third experimental group: (iii) T2DM (cafeteria diet + streptozotocin). Implants with different surface topography/chemistry: (i) dual acid-etched (DAE) and (ii) nano-hydroxyapatite coating over the DAE surface (NANO), were placed into the right ilium of the subjects and allowed to heal for 4 weeks. Histomorphometric evaluation of bone-to-implant contact (%BIC) and bone area fraction occupancy (%BAFO) within implant threads were performed using histomicrographs. Implants with NANO surface presented significantly higher %BIC (~26%) and %BAFO (~35%) relative to implants with DAE surface (%BIC = ~14% and %BAFO = ~28%, p < .025). Data as a function of systemic condition presented significantly higher %BIC (~28%) and %BAFO (~42%) in the control group compared with the metabolically compromised groups (O/MS: %BIC = 14.35% and %BAFO = 26.24%, p < .021; T2DM: %BIC = 17.91% and %BAFO = 26.12%, p < .021) with no significant difference between O/MS and T2DM (p > .05). Statistical evaluation considering both factors demonstrated significantly higher %BIC and %BAFO for the NANO surfacerelative to DAE implant, independent of systemic condition (p < .05). The gain increase of %BIC and %BAFO for the NANO compared with DAE was more pronounced in O/MS and T2DM subjects. Osseointegration parameters were significantly reduced in metabolically compromised subjects compared with healthy subjects. Nanostructured hydroxyapatite-coated surfaces improved osseointegration relative to DAE, regardless of systemic condition.

Impact of surface characteristics on the peri-implant microbiome in health and disease.

Because little is known about the impact of implant surface modifications on the peri-implant microbiome, we aimed to examine peri-implant communities in various surface types in order to better understand the impact of these surfaces on the development of peri-implantitis (PI). One hundred and six systemically healthy individuals with anodized (AN), hydroxyapatite-coated (HA), or sandblasted acid-etched (SLA) implants that were >6 months in function were recruited and categorized into health (H) or PI. Peri-implant biofilm was analyzed using 16S rRNA gene sequencing and compared between health/disease and HA/SLA/AN using community-level and taxa-level metrics. Healthy implants did not demonstrate significant differences in clustering, alpha- or beta-diversity based on surface modification. AN and HA surfaces displayed significant differences between health and PI (p<0.05); however, such a clustering was not evident with SLA (p>0.05). AN and HA surfaces also differed in the magnitude and diversity of differences between health and PI. Six species belonging to the genera Shuttleworthia, Scardovia, and Prevotella demonstrated lower abundances in AN implants with PI, and 18 species belonging to the genera Fretibacterium, Tannerella, Treponema, and Fusobacterium were elevated, while in HA implants with PI, 20 species belonging to the genera Streptococcus, Lactobacillus, Veillonella, Rothia, and family Ruminococcaceae were depleted and Peptostreptococcaceae, Atopobiaceae, Veillonellaceae, Porphyromonadaceae, Desulfobulbaceae, and order Synergistales were enriched. Within the limitations of this study, we demonstrate that implant surface can differentially modify the disease-associated microbiome, suggesting that surface topography must be considered in the multi-factorial etiology of peri-implant diseases.

A study of bionics micro-textures on the surface of HA bio-coatings prepared by nanosecond laser

The material and surface morphology of bone implants can influence cellular activity and proliferation properties. The preparation of biomimetic microtextures on the hydroxyapatite (HA) bio-coated surface can enhance the biological properties of the implant. In this study, a nanosecond laser was used to prepare microtextures on the surface of HA coatings, and the effect of laser parameters on the ablation morphology was investigated by micromorphological observation and response surface methods. The ablation morphology was found to be better when the laser repetition frequency was 20 kHZ, the scanning speed was 300 mm/s and the number of scans was 7. Microtextures imitating fish scales and crocodile skin of different sizes were prepared on the surface of HA coatings using this laser parameter. The biological properties of the microtextures were investigated using CCK-8 tests and cell adhesion tests and the nanosecond laser-prepared mimetic microtextures were found to promote cell proliferation. A 0.1 mm radius of the mock fish scale microtexture had optimal cellular activity, where the tentacles of the cells could fully extend to the surface of the microstructure, which facilitated cell adhesion and proliferation.

Surface Modifications of Dental Implant and its Clinical Performance: A Review

Objectives: This review paper aims to provide an overview of various commercially available dental implant surface modifications and treatments, as well as their reported clinical performances. This knowledge would be useful for the practicing clinician in understanding the healing mechanism associated with each type of implant and in selecting the right type of implant for a specific clinical condition. Methods: An electronic search of literatures was performed in PubMed and Scopus database dated from January 1990 until July 2021. The search keywords were dental implant, surface modification, surface treatment, survival rate and/ or clinical performance as MeSH term. Only relevant studies that were published in English, journal article are summarized and discussed in this review. Results: In the last decade, implant surfaces were manufactured in a concerted effort to provide bone in a faster and improved osseointegration process. A variety of surface modifications have been developed and are currently being used to enhance clinical performance, including turned (machined), hydroxyapatite-coated surface, titanium plasma-sprayed, grit-blasted, acid-etched, anodization, laser-microtextured as well as combinations thereof. Conclusion: Dental implant survival rate relies heavily on the successful integration into the jawbone. Geometry and surface topography are critical to the short- and long-term performance of dental implants. Implant surface modifications expedited osseointegration process, which in turn, early and immediate loading of dental implants has emerged as a viable alternative to the conventional loading protocol.

Hydroxyapatite Surfaces Functionalized with a Self-Assembling Peptide: XPS, RAIRS and NEXAFS Study

Hydroxyapatite (HAP) coatings can improve the biocompatibility and bioactivity of titanium alloys, such as Ti6Al4V, commonly used as material for orthopedic prostheses. In this framework, we have studied the surface of HAP coatings enriched with Mg and either Si or Ti deposited by RF magnetron sputtering on Ti6Al4V. HAP coatings have been furtherly functionalized by adsorption of a self-assembling peptide (SAP) on the HAP surface, with the aim of increasing the material bioactivity. The selected SAP (peptide sequence AbuEAbuEAbuKAbuKAbuEAbuEAbuKAbuK) is a self-complementary oligopeptide able to generate extended ordered structures by self-assembling in watery solutions. Samples were prepared by incubation of the HAP coatings in SAP solutions and subsequently analyzed by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) and Near Edge X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopies, in order to determine the amount of adsorbed peptide, the peptide stability and the structure of the peptide overlayer on the HAP coatings as a function of the HAP substrate and of the pH of the mother SAP solution. Experimental data yielded evidence of SAP adsorption on the HAP surface, and peptide overlayers showed ordered structure and molecular orientation. The thickness of the SAP overlayer depends on the composition of the HAP coating.

Combined technique with hydroxyapatite coated intramedullary nails in treatment of anterolateral bowing of congenital pseudarthrosis of tibia

PurposeThe goal of this study is to evaluate the treatment outcomes of anterolateral bowing and residual deformities of distal tibia in patients with CPT using circular external fixation and hydroxyapatite coated flexible intramedullary nailing without excision of affected part of tibia. Patients and methodsSix patients (4 boys and 2 girls, mean age 12.4 ± 4.1 years) were included in the study. Mean follow-up is 2.1 years. In 4 patients with early onset of disease initial surgical treatment (at age of 5–8 years) was dysplastic zone or pseudarthrosis resection with proximal metaphyseal osteotomy for bone transport. Children with unbroken bowed tibia (2 cases of type II according to Crawford classification) had no previous surgery. Neurofibromatosis type I was diagnosed in 4 cases. Surgical technique for residual deformity correction consisted of percutaneous osteotomy, application of circular external frame and composite hydroxyapatite-coated intramedullary nailing. ResultsMean external fixation time was 95.3 ± 17.5 days. All patients never get fractured after frame removal. At the present time, they are considered to be healed, in 2.1 years, in average, without fractures or deformity recurrence. Mean lower limb length discrepancy varied from 2 to 10 mm at the latest follow-up control. After realignment procedure, patients didn't require additional surgery but one. Intramedullary nails were removed in two years after deformity correction for individual reason. ConclusionCorrection of anterolateral bowing or residual deformity in children with CPT is indicated. Association of external fixation with intramedullary nailing/rodding left in situ after frame removal ensure stability and accuracy of deformity correction. Biological methods of stimulation of bone formation in dysplastic zone are obligatory to ensure bone union. Intramedullary nailing with composite hydroxyapatite-coated surface provides mechanical and biological advantages in patients with CPT.

The Electrochemical and Biological Behaviour of Biomedical Alloy by Surface Modification Technique through E-Beam Evaporation

Biomedical implants, especially the hip and knee implants, have been evolved over the years with great significance in terms of its biocompatibility and corrosion resistance. These implants, however, fail at their longevity when they encounter with the tissue, which is generally due to the failure in coatings over the surface of the implants. Moreover, coating procedures are very complex for applying them to three-dimensional implant structures. Hence to improve the coating property and make them easily applicable, we report a simple and realistic approach of Electron beam (E-beam) evaporation to modify the surface of the bio-metals (Ti–6Al–4V and 316L SS) with hydroxyapatite. The surface characterisation was done using SEM, XRD and AFM, which showed better thin film formation of hydroxyapatite (HA) on the metals. The potentiodynamic polarization and EIS measurements showed that hydroxyapatite-coated surfaces have better corrosion resistance than the bare metal substrates. The immersion study in SBF and cell viability using 3T3 cells proved that HA coated samples show better biomineralisation and better biocompatibility. Thus, HA deposition by E-beam evaporation over the metallic substrates can be applied as an effective surface modification technique for developing implant materials.

Mechanical and chemical properties of Baghdadite coatings manufactured by atmospheric plasma spraying

Baghdadite (Ca3ZrSi2O9) (BAG) is a calcium silicate (CaSi) based ceramic that demonstrates osteostimulatory function, biocompability and chemical stability. This work studies atmospheric plasma sprayed (APS) BAG and APS hydroxyapatite (HAp) coatings by evaluating their phase compositions, chemical properties, coating microstructure and mechanical properties. BAG coatings presents well-melted spherical splats without splashes or fragmentations, while HAp coatings reveal irregular splat shapes that exhibit large splashes and fragmentations. The surface of BAG coatings contains uniform features and less variants than the surface of HAp coatings. The BAG coatings present phases of BAG, calcium silicate and zirconium dioxide, while phases of HAp, tricalcium phosphate and calcium oxide can be found in the HAp coating. The BAG coatings show a more uniform microstructure and greater mechanical properties than the HAp coatings, although BAG coatings show lower level of crystallinity compared with the HAp coatings. Microhardness values of BAG coatings are significantly higher than those of HAp coatings. The distribution of mechanical properties including nanohardness and elastic moduli; which are more consistent and less variable in the BAG coating than those of the HAp coating. The presence of zirconium in BAG coatings increased the microhardness, as well as the hardness and elastic moduli derived from nanoindentation measurements, when contrasted with the properties of HAp coatings. The in vitro result indicated that the BAG coating can promote the healthy development of osteoblast-like MG-63.

Degradation and In Vivo Response of Hydroxyapatite-Coated Mg Alloy

Nowadays there is a need for new generation of biodegradable implants, which should be able to stimulate the healing responses of injured tissues at the molecular level. Magnesium alloys attract great attention as perspective bone implants due to their biocompatibility, physical properties and ability to degrade completely under physiological conditions. The main purpose of this research was assessment of in vitro corrosion and surface morphology after short term in vivo implantation of Mg based implant covered by hydroxyapatite (HA). Mg alloys with the addition of Zr (0.65%), Al (1.85%) and Nd (1.25%) were used. In our work, we propose dipping method for hydroxyapatite coatings formation which has been shown to reduce the corrosion rate of magnesium implants in vivo. Simulated body fluid (SBF; pH 7.4) with ion concentrations approximately equal to those of human blood plasma resembling physiological conditions and citrate buffer with pH 5—simulating inflammation were selected as modelling environments for in vitro degradation test. The rod samples were implanted into the tibia bone of rats and after 1 day and 5 days of implantation were taken out to observe cells adhesion on surface samples. SEM was used to assess surface morphology after in vitro and in vivo tests. SBF solution causes some cracks on the surface of HA coatings, while citrate solution at pH 2 caused complete dissolving of the coating. The HA coating favoured cell adhesion and rapid fibrous tissue formation.

Antimicrobial activity of biogenically produced spherical Se-nanomaterials embedded in organic material against Pseudomonas aeruginosa andStaphylococcus aureus strains on hydroxyapatite-coated surfaces.

SummaryIn an effort to prevent the formation of pathogenic biofilms on hydroxyapatite (HA)‐based clinical devices and surfaces, we present a study evaluating the antimicrobial efficacy of Spherical biogenic Se‐Nanostructures Embedded in Organic material (Bio Se‐NEMO‐S) produced by Bacillus mycoides SelTE01 in comparison with two different chemical selenium nanoparticle (SeNP) classes. These nanomaterials have been studied as potential antimicrobials for eradication of established HA‐grown biofilms, for preventing biofilm formation on HA‐coated surfaces and for inhibition of planktonic cell growth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa NCTC 12934 and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923. Bio Se‐NEMO resulted more efficacious than those chemically produced in all tested scenarios. Bio Se‐NEMO produced by B. mycoides SelTE01 after 6 or 24 h of Na2SeO3 exposure show the same effective antibiofilm activity towards both P. aeruginosa and S. aureus strains at 0.078 mg ml−1 (Bio Se‐NEMO 6) and 0.3125 mg ml−1 (Bio Se‐NEMO 24). Meanwhile, chemically synthesized SeNPs at the highest tested concentration (2.5 mg ml−1) have moderate antimicrobial activity. The confocal laser scanning micrographs demonstrate that the majority of the P. aeruginosa and S. aureus cells exposed to biogenic SeNPs within the biofilm are killed or eradicated. Bio Se‐NEMO therefore displayed good antimicrobial activity towards HA‐grown biofilms and planktonic cells, becoming possible candidates as new antimicrobials.

Low-magnitude, high-frequency vibration promotes the adhesion and the osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells cultured on a hydroxyapatite-coated surface: The direct role of Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway activation.

The positive effect of low-magnitude, high‑frequency(LMHF) vibration on implant osseointegration has been demonstrated; however, the underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms remain unknown. The aim of this study was to explore the effect of LMHF vibration on the adhesion and the osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells(BMSCs) cultured on hydroxyapatite(HA)-coated surfaces in an invitro model as well as to elucidate the molecular mechanism responsible for the effects of LMHF vibration on osteogenesis. LMHF vibration resulted in the increased expression of fibronectin, which was measured by immunostaining and RT-qPCR. Stimulation of BMSCs by LMHF vibration resulted in the rearrangement of the actin cytoskeleton with more prominent F-actin. Moreover, the expression of β1integrin, vinculin and paxillin was notably increased following LMHF stimulation. Scanning electron microscope observations revealed that there were higher cell numbers and more extracellular matrix attached to the HA-coated surface in the LMHF group. Alkaline phosphatase activity as well as the expression of osteogenic-specific genes, namely Runx2, osterix, collagenI and osteocalcin, were significantly elevated in the LMHF group. In addition, the protein expression of Wnt10B, β-catenin, Runx2 and osterix was increased following exposure to LMHF vibration. Taken together, the findings of this study indicate that LMHF vibration promotes the adhesion and the osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs on HA-coated surfacesinvitro, and LMHF vibration may directly induce osteogenesis by activating the Wnt/β‑catenin signaling pathway. These data suggest that LMHF vibration enhances the osseointegration of bone to a HA-coated implant, and provide a scientific foundation for improving bone-implant osseointegration through the application of LMHF vibration.

Ti implants with nanostructured and HA-coated surfaces for improved osseointegration

This study was aimed at comparing the osseointegration of titanium (Ti)-based Küntscher nails (K-nails) and plates with modified nanostructured and hydroxyapatite-coated surfaces in a rat femur model. Material surfaces were first modified via a simple anodization protocol in which the materials were treated in hydrogen fluoride (1% w/w) at 20 V. This modification resulted in tubular titanium oxide nanostructures of 40–65 nm in diameter. Then, hydroxyapatite-deposited layers, formed of particles (1–5) μm, were produced via incubation in a simulated body fluid, followed by annealing at 500°C. Both surface modifications significantly improved cell proliferation and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity as compared to the control (non-modified Ti implants). The controls and modified nails and plates were implanted in the femur of 21 male Sprague-Dawley rats.The implants, with surrounding tissues, were removed after 10 weeks, and then mechanical tests (torque and pull-out) were performed, which showed that the modified K-nails exhibited significantly better osseointegration than the controls. Histologic examinations of the explants containing plates showed similar results, and the modified plates exhibited significantly better osseointegration than the controls. Surface nanostructuring of commercially available titanium-based implants by a very simple method – anodization – seems to be a viable method for increasing osseointegration without the use of bioactive surface coatings such as hydroxyapatite.

Cobalt and chromium exposure affects osteoblast function and impairs the mineralization of prosthesis surfaces in vitro.

Cobalt (Co) and chromium (Cr) ions and nanoparticles equivalent to those released through tribo-corrosion of prosthetic metal-on-metal (MOM) bearings and taper junctions are detrimental to osteoblast activity and function in vitro when examined as individual species. Here we examined the effects of Co(2+):Cr(3+) and Co(2+):Cr(6+) combinations on osteoblast-like SaOS-2 cellular activity, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity and mineralization to better reflect clinical exposure conditions in vivo. We also assessed the effect of Co(2+):Cr(3+) combinations and Co:Cr nanoparticles on SaOS-2 cell osteogenic responses on grit-blasted, plasma-sprayed titanium-coated, and hydroxyapatite-coated prosthesis surfaces. Cellular activity and ALP activity were reduced to a greater extent with combination treatments compared to individual ions. Co(2+) and Cr(3+) interacted additively and synergistically to reduce cellular activity and ALP activity, respectively, while the Co(2+) with Cr(6+) combination was dominated by the effect of Cr(6+) alone. Mineralization by osteoblasts was greater on hydroxyapatite-coated surfaces compared to grit-blasted and plasma-sprayed titanium-coated surfaces. Treatments with Co(2+):Cr(3+) ions and Co:Cr nanoparticles reduced the percentage mineralization on all surfaces, with hydroxyapatite-coated surfaces having the least reduction. In conclusion, our data suggests that previous studies investigating individual metal ions underestimate their potential clinical effects on osteoblast activity. Furthermore, the data suggests that hydroxyapatite-coated surfaces may modulate osteoblast responses to metal debris.

Soft Tissue Integration of Hydroxyapatite-Coated Abutments for Bone Conduction Implants.

The protocol for bone conduction hearing implant surgery involves reduction of soft tissues around the abutment to minimize the risk of skin-related complications. The present investigation was undertaken to demonstrate that hydroxyapatite-coated abutments provide improved soft tissue integration compared with conventional (pure titanium) abutments and are suitable for use without surgical removal of subepidermal soft tissues. Forty-eight implants for bone conduction with two different types of abutments (test and control) were inserted in the skull parietal part of eight sheep. Test abutments had a hydroxyapatite-coated surface and a concave shape. Conventional titanium abutments were used as controls. A follow-up time of 4 weeks was used. Histomorphometric analyses of test and control samples were analyzed, and morphometric results were compared using mixed model analysis. Histological assessment showed healthy soft tissues around the abutments with limited or no signs of inflammation. Hydroxyapatite-coated abutments showed intimate dermal adherence, while less close contact was noted for control abutments. Statistically significant differences in mean pocket depth (0.4 vs 1.6 mm, p = .0013) and epidermal downgrowth (0.6 vs 2.0 mm, p = .0003) between test and control abutments were recorded. The study confirms that hydroxyapatite-coated abutments resulted in a significant reduction in pocket depth and improved soft tissue integration compared with conventional titanium abutments, possibly by providing tight adherence at the interface. Statistically significant reduced pocket depth formation and epidermal downgrowth were recorded.

The Influence of Additives on Hydroxyapatite Biological Coatings of Titanium Alloy Substrate

In this paper, the biological coatings were studied by adding different kinds of additives (TiO2, Al2O3and ZnO) to hydroxyapatite (HA). The different mass ratio of additives and HA in suspension was mixed with n-butyl alcohol as solvent, triethanolamine as dispersant. The HA composite coatings with additives on titanium alloy substrate were prepared by the method of electrophoretic deposition (EPD). The coatings were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Ca/P atomic ratio in composite coatings was analyzed by Energy Dispersive Spectrometer (EDS). The results showed that surface of HA coatings was more uniform and dense by adding TiO2than Al2O3or ZnO; and when adding the same kind of additive, the content was higher, there were more holes in HA coatings and surface of the coatings was less uniform. When HA was 15 g/L and TiO2was 5 g/L in suspension, Ca/P atomic ratio was 1.56, that’s the most close to the body's natural bone (~ 1.61). HA coatings can be implanted in the body after a short time of ossification and exhibited a good bioactivity.

The effect of surface treatment of titanium with sand-blasting/acid-etching or hydroxyapatite-coating and application of bone morphogenetic protein-2 on attachment, proliferation, and differentiation of stem cells derived from buccal fat pad

This study was performed to evaluate the effect of surface treatment of titanium, including: machined (MA), sand-blasted and acid-etched (SA), and hydroxyapatite-coated (HA) surfaces, and application of bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) on attachment, proliferation, and differentiation of stem derived from buccal fat pad. Stem cells were isolated from buccal fat pad. Stem cells were cultured on MA, SA, and HA titanium discs with and without BMP-2. Cellular attachment and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity were evaluated at day 3, 7, and 14. Osteocalcin expression was performed using immunofluorescent assay. The cells grown on MA surface demonstrated good attachment with spindle-like morphology, and cells grown on SA and HA surfaces demonstrated more stellate-like morphology. An increase of ALP activity was seen in the rough surface (SA and HA groups) and a statistically significant increase was seen in the HA group (p < 0.05). The addition of BMP-2 made an expression of osteocalcin, and the highest expression of osteocalcin was noted in the HA group. Within the limits of this study, surface modification of titanium surfaces by sand-blasting/acid-etching or hydroxyapatite-coating was not able to allow the stem cells to differentiate into osteoblasts without exogenous soluble factors. The addition of BMP-2 showed osteogenic differentiation of stem cells and HA-coated surfaces demonstrated the highest ALP and osteocalcin expression.

Modified Titanium Surfaces Alter Osteogenic Differentiation: A Comparative Microarray-Based Analysis of Human Mesenchymal Cell Response to Commercial Titanium Surfaces

The differential effects of dual-acid etched (Osseotite), hydroxyapatite coated (HA) and sand-blasted/acid-etched (SLA) titanium surfaces on human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal cells (hMSCs) were investigated. Proliferation was significantly promoted on the SLA surfaces. 16 genes were significantly upregulated when hMSCs were cultured on the Osseotite and the HA surfaces and 15 genes on the SLA surfaces. Upregulated genes control cell differentiation, signal transduction, cell cycle regulation, angiogenesis, cell adhesion, and extracellular matrix and bone formation.

In vitro biological performance of nano-particles on the surface of hydroxyapatite coatings

The biocompatibility of a kind of heat-treated bilayer hydroxyapatite (HA) coatings with nano-particles was investigated, mainly in terms of the immersion in simulated body fluid (SBF) and osteoblast adhesion. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to observe the morphology of coatings and cellular adhesion. The phases present in the coatings were determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Calcium ion (Ca 2+) concentration in SBF was measured by Atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The results show nano-HA heat-treated at 650 °C for 0.5 h (BBCs) is comparatively stable during immersion in SBF and favor of the adhesion of osteoblasts. Cellular filopodia adhere firmly to the nano-particles and stretch in various direction.

Morphologic Change of Implant Surfaces Conditioned with Tetracycline-HCl

The purpose of treatment for peri-implantitis is to achieve structural and functional restoration of the lost supporting tissues around implants, including re-osseointegration. Both surgical and non-surgical approaches in combination with a variety of anti-microbial treatment regimens have been applied depending on the size and shape of the bone defect. Tetracycline-HCl (Tc) treatment has been considered as a effective chemical modality for decontamination and detoxification of contaminated implant surfaces. The aim of this study was to examine if Tc conditioning changes the microstructures of the modified surface of dental implants. Dental implants with (1) hydroxyapatite-coated surface (HAS) (Replace® select HA, Nobel Biocare AB, Göthenburg, Sweden), (2) TiO2-blasted surface (TBS) (Astra TiOblast®, ASTRA Tech AB, Mölndal, Sweden) were used in this study. Tc treatment noticeably altered the surface of HAS and TBS. HAS and TBS were partially removed from the implant surface as early as 90 and 60 sec, respectively.
