Properties of band gap for p-polarized wave propagating in a binary superconductor-dielectric photonic crystal

A photonic crystal (PC) having the structure (AB)NA is investigated. A and B are superconductor and dielectric layers, respectively. P-polarized (TM) wave is assumed to be incident on the PC. The transmission of TM waves through the PC is studied with a focus on photonic band gap (PBG). The change in the PBG is studied with the variation of different parameters of the superconducting layer such as temperature, critical temperature, thickness and London penetration length. The angle of incidence dependence of the PBG is also investigated. The PBG band width at half maximum (BWHM) decreases with increasing the incidence angle until Brewster angle is reached where the band gap vanishes. The BWHM has shown the lowest dependence on temperature and critical temperature among the parameters of the superconducting layer. London penetration length has the greatest effect on the BWHM among the parameters of the superconductor layer.

Transmittance properties of superconductor-dielectric photonic crystal

Using Transfer Matrix Method, we numerically study the transmission behavior of one dimensional superconductor photonic crystal. Superconductor photonic crystal is usually a composite material consisting of superconductor and dielectric material. In this study, we have discussed the photonic band gap of the superconductor-dielectric photonic crystal at different temperatures. The typical transmittance properties of the considered structure have been accessed through the transfer matrix method simulations. The transmission characteristics for superconductor photonic crystal have been examined with different various parametric effects including the thickness of the considered structures, frequency and different temperatures. Moreover, the variations of transmission spectra with respect to thickness and temperature have also been investigated. The findings of the present study support the superconductor photonics structures to possess the potential for tunable filter applications.

Filtering properties of Thue–Morse nano-photonic crystals containing high-temperature superconductor

In this paper, we introduced new design of quasi-periodic layered structures by choosing order two of ternary Thue–Morse structure. We considered Superconductor-dielectric photonic crystal with mirror symmetric as (ABSSAB)N(BASSBA)N composed of two kinds of nano-scale dielectric layers (A and B) and high-temperature superconductor layers where N is the number of period. This structure is assumed to be the free space. By using the transfer matrix method and the two fluid model, we theoretically study the transmission spectrum of ternary Thue–Morse superconducting photonic crystals with mirror symmetry and introduce this structure as a narrow optical filter. We showed that transmission peak so-called defect mode appears itself inside the transmission spectrum of suggested structure as same as defective layered structure. Also, we analyzed the influence of various related parameters such as the operating temperature of superconductor layer on position of defect mode. The redshift of defect mode with increasing the operating temperature was observed.

Investigation of the 1D symmetrical linear graded superconductor-dielectric photonic crystals and its potential applications as an optimized low temperature sensors

Based on the Transfer Matrix Method (TMM) and the two fluid model for a superconductor and by taking account of the thermal expansion effect and thermo optical effects, we theoretically investigates the transmittance spectra of a one dimensional superconductor –dielectric photonic crystal (PC) designed as ((HLS)5/(SLH)5) made up of a BiGeO12(H), SiO2(L) and YaBO2CuO7 (S). The transmittance spectra shows that the system realizes a tunable filter which depends on a nonlinear relation with temperature. It's found that the symmetrical application of a linear deformation d(m) = d0+(m-1).δd(m) where d0 is the initial thickness of the layer m, δd(m) is the elementary added thickness at each layer. This linear gradation of the thickness permits to improve the temperature sensitivity of the system which acts as an optimized low temperature sensor.

Tunable broadband terahertz wave plate based on one-dimensional superconductor–dielectric photonic crystals

The reflection phase difference between transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) waves in a one-dimensional superconductor–dielectric photonic crystal is studied by the transfer matrix method. The simulation results indicate that wide frequency regions exist within the terahertz range, in which the reflection phase differences can remain constant for a fixed incident angle and can vary continuously from 0 to π (or 0 to ) by increasing the incident angle. The shift and the number of such wide frequency regions can be manipulated through changing the thickness of the dielectric layers. The influences of temperature and the normal conducting electrons on the properties of the reflection phase difference are also numerically investigated. Based on these properties, a continuously tunable broadband terahertz wave plate can be designed.

Thermally Tunable Photonic Filter for WDM Networks Using 1D Superconductor Dielectric Photonic Crystals

A novel design of a single-channel thermally tunable photonic filter by cascading two one-dimensional (1D) superconductor-dielectric photonic crystals (SDPCs) through low loss silica fiber for wavelength selective switching (WSS) application is being presented theoretically. This filter is capable to separate and switch unique wavelength channel (without interfering with each other) from 12 equally spaced wavelength channels adopted by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). It may be used in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM)-based optical networks for routing signals at specific wavelengths into an optical fiber with minimum distortion. This idea may also be explored in the design of very precise thermal sensing devices for remote sensing applications.

BSCCO/SrTiO3 One Dimensional Superconducting Photonic Crystal for Many Applications

Based on the transfer matrix method (TMM), we introduce a theoretical study of the transmittance properties of a one dimensional superconductor dielectric photonic crystal (PC). We focus on the so-called cutoff frequency where the implementation of this feature can be useful in using PC as a good reflector besides other applications. Furthermore, we have discussed the effect of temperature on the position of the cutoff frequency inside the band structure. The results show that the cutoff frequency is very sensitive to the temperature variation and that the photonic band gab can be tuned by varying the system temperature.

Tunable terahertz multichannel filter based on one-dimensional superconductor-dielectric photonic crystals

By means of the transfer matrix method, the transmission properties of one-dimensional photonic crystals (PCs) consisting of superconductor and dielectric have been systematically investigated within the terahertz frequency range (0.1–10 THz). It is shown that comb-like resonant peaks in transmission band can be formed without adding any defect layer in superconductor-dielectric PCs, which means that such a one-dimensional periodic structure can serve as a tunable terahertz multichannel filter by using the PCs passband. Furthermore, the influences coming from the period of the structure, the thickness of the components, the permittivity of the dielectric layers, temperature, and the normal conducting electrons on the filtering properties are also numerically investigated.

Those OBGs originate from Bragg gaps. From the analysis, it is found that this kind of heterostructure has wider frequency ranges of total OBGs for both polarizations in comparison to the dielectric photonic crystals (DPCs) or SDPCs, and the bandwidths of OBGs can be notably enlarged by increasing the thickness of superconductor layer and decreasing the ambient temperature.

Omni directional reflectance properties of superconductor-dielectric photonic crystal

The omnidirectional reflection properties in one dimensional superconductor-dielectric photonic crystal have been studied theoretically. In this present communication, the superconductor-dielectric photonic crystal in one dimension having alternate regions of superconductor-dielectric. The reflectance behaviors from these periodic multilayered structures are calculated for different angles of incidence. The reflectance and band structure is obtained by solving a Maxwell's equation using a translational matrix method. The study of reflectance bands of such superconductor-dielectric photonic crystal show that it can be used as broad band reflector.

In this paper, an omnidirectional photonic band gap (OBG) which originates from Bragg gap compared to zero-n˜ gap or single negative (negative permittivity or negative permeability) gap, is realized by one-dimensional (1D) superconductor-dielectric photonic crystals (SDPCs) with ternary Thue–Mores aperiodic structure, which is composed of superconductor and two kinds of homogeneous, isotropic dielectric is theoretically investigated by the transfer matrix method (TMM) in detail. Such OBG is insensitive to the incident angle and the polarization of electromagnetic wave (EM wave). From the numerical results, the bandwidth and central frequency of OBG can be notably enlarged by tuning the thickness of superconductor and dielectric layers but cease to change with increasing Thue–Mores order. The OBG also can be manipulated by the ambient temperature of system especially close to the critical temperature. Moreover, the damping coefficient of superconductor has no effect on the bandwidth of OBG under low-temperature condition. These results may provide theoretical instructions to design the future optoelectronic devices based on superconductor.

Compared to zero- $\bar{n}$ gap or single negative (negative permittivity or negative permeability) gap, such OBG originates from Bragg gap. From the numerical results, the bandwidth and central frequency of OBG can be notably enlarged by manipulating the thicknesses of superconductor and dielectric layers but cease to change with increasing the Thue–Mores order. The OBG also can be tuned by the ambient temperature of the system especially close to the critical temperature. However, the damping coefficient of the superconductor layer has no effects on the OBG. The relative bandwidth of OBG also is investigated by the parameters as mentioned above. It is clear that such 1D ternary SDPCs have a superior feature in the enhancement of the bandwidth of OBG compared to the conventional ternary SDPCs and conventional ternary Thue–Mores aperiodic SDPCs. These results may provide theoretical instructions to design the future SDPCs devices.

Investigating the Omnidirectional Photonic Band Gap in One-Dimensional Superconductor–Dielectric Photonic Crystals with a Modified Ternary Fibonacci Quasiperiodic Structure

In this paper, an omnidirectional photonic band gap (OBG) of one-dimensional (1D) superconductor–dielectric photonic crystals (SDPCs) with a modified ternary Fibonacci quasiperiodic structure which originates from Bragg gap is theoretically investigated by the transfer matrix method (TMM) in detail. The SDPCs are composed of superconductor and two kinds of homogeneous, isotropic dielectric. Such OBG is independent of the incidence angle and the polarization of electromagnetic wave (EM wave). From the numerical results, the OBG can be notably enlarged by tuning the thickness of superconductor and dielectric layers but cease to change with increasing the Fibonacci order. The OBG also can be manipulated by the ambient temperature of system. Especially, the ambient temperature of system is close to the critical temperature. However, the damping coefficient of superconductor has no effects on the OBG. The gap/midgap ratio of OBG also is studied by those parameters. It is shown that 1D SDPCs with a modified ternary Fibonacci quasiperiodic structure have a superior feature in the enhancement of OBG compared with the conventional 1D ternary and conventional ternary Fibonacci quasiperiodic SDPCs.

Analysis of effective plasma frequency in a superconducting photonic crystal

In this work, a theoretical analysis on the effective plasma frequency (EPF) for a one-dimensional superconductor dielectric photonic crystal is made. First, the EPF is extracted from the first photonic band calculated within the framework of transfer matrix method together with Bloch theorem in a periodic multilayer structure. We investigate the EPF as a function of the filling factor and the permittivity of the dielectric layer, and the operating temperature as well. Then, the EPF is comparatively studied by the analytical expression derived from the effective medium theory. It is found that both results are in fairly good agreement.

Transmitted Powers of Waves through Superconductor-dielectric Photonic Crystal

We Consider a periodic superconductor-dielectric photonic crystal situated between two half free spaces. A polarized plane wave is obliquely incident on it. The reflection and transmission of electromagnetic waves by the crystal are analyzed theoretically and numerically with the emphasis on the penetration depth of the superconductor. Maxwell's equations are used to determine the electric and magnetic fields of the incident waves at each layer. Snell's law is applied and the boundary conditions are imposed at each layer interface to calculate the reflected and transmitted coefficients of the structure. The reflected and transmitted powers of the crystal are determined using these coefficients by a recursive method. In the numerical results, the mentioned powers are computed and illustrated as versus the wavelength, angle of incidence and dielectric thickness.
