Enhancing Entrepreneurship Education in a Master’s Degree in Computer Engineering: A Project-Based Learning Approach

New master’s degrees in computer engineering, designed according to Spanish government requirements, include both technical and business subjects to provide advanced knowledge compared to undergraduate studies. In spite of acquiring this advanced knowledge, our students are not always aware of the significant added value and the positive elements the master’s degree provides for their future professional careers. Moreover, we have observed that students regard the different subjects as isolated blocks of knowledge. To tackle these problems, we have carried out a learning experience based on the creation of a technology-based enterprise (TBE) through the development of a common project (CP). Drawing on project-based learning (PBL) methodology, the CP consists of the identification, development, and final oral presentation of a business model. It aims to utilize sensor data and analysis in different domains. The experience has been highly positive, reducing the gap between studies and business practice, and increasing coordination among teachers. A key issue is that all the subjects of the master’s degree are involved in this learning experience. In addition, results show a high level of satisfaction with the master’s degree, compared to other similar courses.

Thearticlehighlightstheissueoftheinstitutionalstructureofsmallandmedium-sizedbusinessesintheRepublicofKazakhstan.Inparticular,theessenceoftheinstitutionalenvironmentofentrepreneurshipisdeterminedanditsdefinitionisproposedbasedontheanalysisofscientificsources.ThestructureofthesystemofstateregulationandstimulationofentrepreneurshipintheRepublicofKazakhstanisanalyzed.EstimatesoftheentrepreneurialclimateoftheRepublicofKazakhstanasanobjectofstateinfluencefortheformationoffavorableconditionsforthedevelopmentofsmallandmediumsizedbusinessesaregiven.Authornotestheimportanceofasystematicapproachtotheformationofthestatepolicytostimulateandsupportsmallandmediumsizedbusinesses.Thearticlerevealsthefeaturesofmanagementandstimulation,aswellasdeterminesthemainprioritydirectionsandtargetparametersforthedevelopmentofsmallandmediumbusinessfortheRepublicofKazakhstan.Purpose:themainobjectiveofthisarticleistostudytheinstitutionalframeworkfortheoperationofsmallandmedium-sizedbusinessesintheRepublicofKazakhstanandtoassesstheimpactoftheinstitutionalworkingenvironmentonthedevelopmentofsmallandmediumsizedbusinesses.Toachievethispurpose,thefollowingtasksweresolved:todeterminetheessenceoftheinstitutionalenvironmentofentrepreneurship;tostudythestructureofthesystemandthemechanismofstateregulationandstimulationofentrepreneurshipintheRepublicofKazakhstan;toanalyzetheactualstateoftheinstitutionalenvironmentofentrepreneurshipintheRepublicofKazakhstan;todeterminethetargetcriteriaforthedevelopmentofSMEsintheRepublicofKazakhstan.Methods:thisarticleisbasedonthemethodsofstructuralanalysisandofthesystemapproach.Results:today,smallandmediumsizedbusinessesarethemostpromisingactorsinthedevelopmentofapostindustrialeconomy,whereadvancedtechnologiesandinnovativesolutionsareapriority.Smallandmediumsizedbusinesses,bypropertyoftheirmobilityandflexibility,arethemostsusceptibletoinnovationandcanbeprovidersofhightechnology.Inaddition,theadaptabilityofsmallandmediumsizedbusinessesisafactorofrapidandtargetedresponsetotheslightestchangesinmarketortechnologicalconditions.Atthesametime,smallandmediumbusinessesareanimportantfactorinreducingunemployment(especiallystructuralandcyclical).Butatthesametime,smallandmediumsizedbusinessesneedprotectionfromthestate,sinceasmallamountofcapital,aswellasarelativelysmallamountofproductionofeachindividualsubjectofsmallandmediumsizedbusiness,causesinsecurityintheeventofamarketexpansionoflargebusinesses.Errorsinthesystemofstateregulationofbusiness(tighteningoftaxation,inexpedientlystringentregulations,etc.)cansignificantlyslowdownorevencauseareductionintheexpansionofentrepreneurialinitiative.Thus,thesearchforwaystoorganizethemostfavorableinstitutionalandmarketenvironmentforsmallandmediumsizedbusinesses(inparticular,priorityfortheimplementationofstateeconomicpolicy)isaprioritytaskofthestateregulatorysystem.Conclusionsandrelevance:theresearchcarriedoutwithintheframeworkofthesubjectofthisarticleshowsthattheinstitutionalenvironmentfortheoperationofsmallandmediumsizedbusinessesintheRepublicofKazakhstanisquitefavorable,becausethestateimplementsapolicyofmaximumfavortothedevelopmentofentrepreneurialinitiativeinthecountry.Moreover,bymaximizingitseffortstocreateaneffectivemechanismforstimulatingandsupportingsmallandmediumsizedbusinesses,theinstitutionalenvironmentisconstantlyimproving.Thisbringsitsresults,intheformofimprovingthegeneralbusinessenvironment.Atthesametime,therearecertainaspects,suchascustomsbarriers,thedificultyinobtainingvariouskindsofpermits(oftenthisisduetocorruptoficials).Therefore,theincentivesystemforsmallandmediumsizedbusinessesshouldincludeaneffectivemechanismtoensurecompliancewithrightsandprotectentrepreneurs.

Resumo Ao longo do tempo, diferentes instituições de origens diversas foram agregadas ao capitalismo, sendo a de seguros uma delas. No presente artigo, analisa-se o caso de duas seguradoras que faziam seguros de vida para escravos no Brasil. Procura-se demonstrar que, no século XIX, apesar de a escravidão ser um negócio sujeito a riscos como a morte prematura dos escravos, foi criada uma solução própria à época: o seguro contra a morte natural dos cativos.

Statutory Separation of Energy Powers

The separation of powers forms the backbone of our constitutional democracy. But it is also a guiding principle in sub-constitutional domains. This Article argues that Congress constructs statutory schemes of separation, checks, and balances through its delegations to administrative agencies. This statutory separation of powers may be seen clearly in the simultaneous legislative creation of the independent Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and the executive Department of Energy (DOE). Like its constitutional counterpart, the statutory separation of powers seeks to prevent the dominance of faction and create policy stability. But separating and balancing statutory authority is a delicate business subject to challenges of imprecise allocation, lopsided aggrandizement, and infrequent adjustment. The relationship between FERC and the DOE demonstrates these challenges, which have allowed the DOE to weaponize statutory checks and balances in its pursuit of policy dominance. The article concludes with recommendations for how Congress, the judiciary, and agencies themselves might mitigate these tendencies and preserve the statutory separation of powers as a meaningful safeguard against the perils of concentrated policymaking authority.

Assessing the Receptiveness of Industrial Design Students to Business Programs: A Framework for Reinforcement and Implementation

Business subjects build strong foundation for those who aspire to venture into entrepreneurship having in- depth knowledge in management, finance and marketing. Business programs can provide strong foundation with contemporary and practical contexts that are relevant to everyday decision-making. The Industrial Design Program of the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde envisions graduates of the program who are not just design- inclined but also competent individuals who are equipped with technical business skills utilizing their strong design foundation in building business empires that promote economic progress to communities they belong to. In this light, the proponent sees an opportunity to further affirm this contention by establishing how students of the program assess business subjects as influenced by how they perceive their professors’ qualifications and competencies and how these translate to a better appreciation on the relevance of these subjects to their profession as industrial designers. The results of the study affirm a high level of technical qualifications among the professors of the program having displayed above par competencies and employed methodologies that deliver an effective learning experience to students. On the other hand, the receptiveness of students was at a certain level influenced by how professors exude their expertise in business concepts and its relevance to the design practice. Preferences in improving students appreciation of the business programs were also given emphasis specifically a proposal on business organization exposure local or abroad, alignment of professors credentials to business and relaying experiential knowledge in business. The paper intends to integrate a student- centered approach in enhancing the current curriculum of the Industrial Design program and improving the competencies of business professors to promote a deeper appreciation on the relevance of business programs to the practice of the design profession. With these results, students and school administrators would have a better gauge and understanding on factors that affect perceptions and how these can be influenced to further enrich learning among students of the program.

The role of agroholdings in the development of the economies of the regions of Russia

The article analyzes the activities of agroholdings in the regions of the Russian Federation, reveales the factors of the diversity of agroholdings. The article gives the rating of the Russian Federation’s subjects by the number of largest agro holdings by profit, and by the number of largest agro-holdings by profit per unit of area of the subject is cited. It notes that the modern statistics of agriculture operates with indicators of the lower levels (agricultural organizations) without reference to companies, so it does not directly reflect data on agroholdings. A comparative analysis of the Russian Federation subjects in terms of the number of agricultural organizations that are not small business subjects, as well as the area of agricultural land attributable to organizations that are not small businesses. The author revealed the positive and negative consequences of the activities of agroholdings in the Russian Federation. The article consideres the activities of agroholdings, the features of their formation and state support in Belgorod Region in more detail. It notes that the main activities of agroholdings are the most profitable and relatively short payback periods, for example, the production of cereals, sunflower, poultry and pork. In the regions located in close proximity to major markets, vegetable growing is developed.

Internalising internationalisation: views of internationalisation of the curriculum among non-mobile home students

ABSTRACTThere is considerable literature on internationalising the curriculum in higher education, but relatively little of this focuses on developing international perspectives in home-based students. In particular, there has been limited direct engagement with student views and understandings, especially comparatively across a wide range of subjects. To address this gap, we surveyed 495 first-year students in nine subjects across four faculties at a UK university, asking about their views on internationalisation. We also examined an apparent bias in the literature towards Business subject case studies. We found some support for generic approaches to teaching internationalisation for home students, but a more widespread sense of the need for subject-based contextualisation. We also found that experiential learning models favoured in the Business-centric literature do not match the needs of students more widely.

Internal model for IFRS 9 - Expected credit losses calculation

This article explores and analyzes the implementation problem of International Financial Reporting Standard 9 (IFRS 9) which is in use from 1 January 2018. IFRS 9 is most relevant for financial institutions, but also for all business subjects with a significant share of financial assets in their Balance sheet. The main objective of this article is the implementation of new impairment model for financial instruments, which is measurable through Expected Credit Losses (ECL). The use of this model is in correlation with a credit risk of the company for which it is necessary to determine basic variables of the model: Exposure at Default (EAD), Loss Given Default (LGD) and Probability of Default (PD). Basel legislation could be used for LGD calculation while PD calculation is based on specific methodology with two different solutions. In the first option, PD is taken as an external data from reliable rating agencies. When there is no external rating, an internal model for PD calculation has to be created. In order to develop an internal model, authors of this article propose application of multi-criteria decision-making model based on Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method. Input data in the model are based on information from financial statements while MS Excel is used for calculation of such multi-criteria problem. Results of internal model are mathematically related with PD values for each analyzed company. Simple implementation of this internal model is an advantage compared to other much more complicated models.

Part of the study is the UML Systems modeling usage for Junior Developers by investigating the documentation used in development. This study used several methods in gathering data, interview, and questionnaire from junior and senior developers was used to come up with a result. It also investigates the possible usage of UML Diagrams in Business field which will be a basis for a future proposed content curriculum for both Business Administration and Information Technology. The result of the study shows that junior developers are not using UML Systems modeling, while senior developers increase as the experience increase in development. Most of the respondents used a diagram that is outside in the UML family. The study also shows that UML helps the managers and business people to build models and diagram that helps them to put things into perspective. It proposed that UML Diagrams should include in business Subject for both programs, the business and information technology program should unite to increase the UML usage.

How do first year students utilize different lecture resources?

One of the more noticeable changes to tertiary teaching over the past decade has been the widespread adoption of digital technologies, in particular eLearning platforms and lecture capture technology. However, much of the current knowledge of how students utilise these new technologies and their effect on traditional lecture attendance is simply derived from student surveys rather than comprehensive independent analyses. In this study, we use cluster analysis to identify common lecture resource utilisation patterns for students in four large first-year business subjects. While common usage patterns with respect to lecture attendance, video lecture recording access and download of lecture notes are identified across our subjects, the proportion of students within each of the utilisation clusters varies widely. Business statistics students are much more likely to either attend lectures or view video recordings compared to economics students, many of whom rely solely on the download of lecture notes. In order to gain insight into how student characteristics may affect these utilisation patterns, we develop a predictive model, quantifying the influences of prior academic performance, gender, age, distance from campus and international student status using statistical modelling. We find a strong role for students’ previous academic performance in explaining lecture resource utilisation patterns. Students’ commuting distance to campus is also established as a factor dissuading physical lecture attendance. Contrary to initial expectations, we also found that females and older students tend to rely more heavily on digital resources rather than lecture attendance. It is hoped that these findings can help first-year instructors and University administrators understand the heterogeneity of student lecture engagement patterns within the first-year experience.

Investigating different patterns of student engagement with blended learning environments in Australian business education: Implications for design and practice

This research reports on a diverse student audience engaging in an Australian university’s undergraduate commerce program core unit which was offered across three separate geographic campus locations and online. The research extends upon work undertaken on student engagement in online settings and lies in the domain of blended learning design and practice in the Australian higher education business context. The research adopted a dual-period surveying approach aimed at comparing patterns of student engagement within a major business subject offered in two different trimesters in one academic year. The survey analysis compared student perceptions of engagement with the subject and identified significant variations in patterns of engagement based on key background and demographic factors. Findings, inter alia, are presented across seven major student engagement dimensions as applied to the interplay between online and located/campus learning (i.e. Online Active Learning, Online Social Interaction, Online Collaboration, Online Teaching, Online Assessment, Online Relevance, and Online Contact with Staff). Implications for blended learning design, eLearning and practice in such complex environments involving diverse student audiences are examined.

Conservation and trade of wild edible mushrooms of Serbia – history, state of the art and perspectives

Wild edible mushrooms have received significant scientific and socio-economic attention in the last few decades, since they have become the subject of a booming trade business. Through last decades, Serbia, a small country positioned in the South East of Europe, has become a source country for extensive export of commercially important species of wild mushrooms. The data used for international analyses of national policy on mushroom protection and trade are cited usually from personal communications and therefore are not really reliable. Extensive investigations into diversity or ecology of macro fungi in Serbia have never been undertaken. The forestry sector, which is managing all forests in the country, has absolutely neglected its role in ecosystems while habitats of macro fungi have been permanently destroyed. There are only two legal acts that refer to mushroom protection directly and none aims to protect their habitats or diversity in practice. In this contribution, a comprehensive review of official data on research, conservation, socio-economic importance and legislation on wild edible mushrooms and truffles in Serbia was provided. Additionally, the application of existing legal acts on conservation of macro fungi and data on wild mushroom trade in the period between 1993–2016, during which time the trade control has been initiated was analysed. The currently valid system of conservation and trade control are discussed in the frame of protection of wild mushroom species and their habitats and measures for upgrading this system in order to meet the requirements of the sustainable use of natural resources in the socio-economic conditions of Serbia are proposed.

The Choice of Law Issues in Marine Insurance Disputes Resolution in Indonesia

Marine insurance business in Indonesia such as marine hull and machinery insurance and cargo insurance are subject to applicable laws and practices in the United Kingdom. Although Indonesia already has marine insurance law which is regulated in Wetboek van Koophandel, in fact, this business subject to English Law and Practice. The choice of law is listed in the insurance policy. Submission of the law and practice in the UK raises the issue for the parties in the insurance contract, between Insurer and Insured. Although the principle of the contract is a law for those who make it, in practice, there is a problem. The problem is especially when there is a dispute between Insurer and Insured. When disputes occur, each party has a different opinion regarding which country's laws may be applied to resolve disputes between Insurance Companies and Policyholders (the proper law of the contract, the applicable law). When referring to the provisions contained in the marine insurance policy which is a contract of the parties, it should be settled under the legal system and the practice of law which is in force in the United Kingdom, because the choice of law is written in the contract. However, the problem arises again, whether the choice of law in the insurance contract can be applied, if the insurance company as a legal entity is established under Indonesian law and domiciled in Indonesia, as well as the policyholders who are Indonesian. On the basis of such matters, this paper intended to elaborate the principles of international civil law in Indonesia regarding the choice of law in the contract and is also associated with the personal status of the insurance company, the personal status of the policyholder who are Indonesian, as well as the consequences of the choice of law listed in marine hull and machinery insurance or cargo insurance and national laws which can be applied to marine insurance disputes occurring in Indonesia. Enhancing Learning Performance Through Classroom Response Systems: The Effect of Knowledge in a Global Economic Environment

ABSTRACTThe international business education literature suggests that a global mindset can be acquired and benefit students to embrace new ideas and improve their critical thinking. Using a sample of 1,448 undergraduate students in Corporate Finance, International Finance, and Business Law subjects during 2013–2015, our results indicate that students with better academic performance in the subject Global Economic Environment achieve a better learning outcome in advanced functional business subjects. However, students with a better global mindset do not benefit as much from the Classroom Response Systems (CRSs) as the weaker students do.

Analiza optimalnosti troškova zaliha rezervnih delova poljoprivrednih mašina

Managing reserves of spare parts for agricultural machinery in agricultural farms represents one of the most important activities in securing smooth functioning, especially having in mind the imperative of continuous agricultural production. Aims of this study were to show how efficiency of the agricultural farms as a business subject can be secured by determining timely purchase of spare parts by using a stochastic model of supplies on one side and reduce the time of malfunction of agricultural machinery on the other. Study of optimal inventory level was conducted in agricultural holdings on the territory Banat in 2015 based on data on spare parts purchase and malfunction of agricultural machinery. Acquired data was related to frequency of defects and the need for spare parts, as well as the price of spare parts, where the data was processed with the use of stochastic model of supplies. The optimal number of spare parts for the observed equipment in the observed period was y*=4 with the probability of 85% that this amount of spare parts will be sufficient for all malfunctions on the equipment to be eliminated, while taking a 15% risk that one or two spare parts will be acquired with emergency procurements in case of extraordinary circumstances. The model of managing supplies represented in such a way provides an opportunity to be easily applied in agricultural farms, where the values of an optimal solution would be effectively got with previously chosen values of suitable parameters, thus minimizing total expected costs, which would include fxed costs, expenses caused by unsatisfied requests, where the time of waiting for the observed equipment to be fxed would be taken into account.

The Case for the Need for Personal Financial Literacy Education in Botswana Secondary Schools

Personal financial literacy (PFL) is an imperative life skill that all 21st-century students should have. Research shows that the levels of financial literacy in both developing and developed countries are very low across people of all ages. This deplorable state of affairs has negative implications on the well-being of the populace, as evidenced by increased indebtedness, lower saving, poor planning for retirement, and the making of many poor personal financial decisions. Recognizing the potential benefits of financial literacy at both individual and national levels, many countries have started to offer financial education in their schools. This article analyzed the business subjects’ curriculum at secondary school level in Botswana and literature published on the subject of PFL, and found that there exists a gap in this area and a need to offer PFL to all learners in the school system. Despite the need for such a move, Botswana does not have a deliberate program in its curriculum that specifically addresses this problem. This article discusses the benefits of personal financial education, the inadequacy of current business subjects to meet this need, and concludes by recommending a mandatory PFL subject in the Botswana secondary school curriculum.
