EVALUATION OF THE POSSIBILITY OF FLUSHING OF DRIP IRRIGATION SYSTEMS WITH ELECTROCHEMICALLY ACTIVATED LOW-CONCENTRATION SALT SOLUTIONS

The practice of using drip irrigation systems shows that contamination of drip outlets, including products of organic origin, is a serious threat to their reliable operation. In Ukraine, to combat such contamination, drip irrigation pipelines are flushed with environmentally hazardous 15% sodium hypochlorite AquaDoctor made in China. At the same time, there is evidence in the world practice of the possibility of effective use of environmentally friendly electrochemically activated low-concentrated saline solutions, in particular, anolyte, for such purposes. The analysis of the domestic market of disinfectants, bactericidal agents and antiseptics suggested that the anolyte "Crystal" produced by PE "Personnel Lux" (Kharkiv), which has a high biocidal effect. Kharkiv), which has a high biocidal activity at a mass total concentration of 0.1% of ADR, and electrochemically activated low-concentrated sodium hypochlorite "Secobren" with a hypochlorite content of up to 0.06% produced by "UKRTEK PRODUCT" LLC (Kyiv), which may have similar properties, can be used for flushing drip outlets. Laboratory and field studies have been conducted to determine the possibility of flushing drip irrigation pipelines with electrochemically activated low-concentrated saline solutions to remove contamination of drip irrigation outlets with products of organic origin. The study was conducted during the flushing of drip irrigation pipelines with integrated drippers from ASSIF (METZER, Israel) with AquaDoctor, Crystal and Secobren disinfectants. Laboratory studies were conducted in the laboratory of the Institute of Plant Industry and Mechanics of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine, accredited in the UkrSEPRO system, and field studies were conducted on subsurface drip irrigation systems in Cherkasy and Kyiv regions. For flushing in the field, the "Forced installation of supply and mixing of PUPS" developed by IRRIGATOR UKRAINE LLC was used. The results of laboratory and field studies have shown that the washing capabilities of environmentally safe products "Kristal" and "Secobren" are comparable to those of environmentally hazardous hypochlorite "AquaDoctor". This makes it expedient to conduct further research to develop the technology of washing drip outlets depending on the nature and intensity of their pollution.

Abstract Understanding the water use of drought-tolerant crops of the drought-prone Mediterranean regions is important for sustainable agriculture. The aim of this study was to evaluate the yield and yield responses of amaranth (Amaranthus hybridus L.) to different irrigation strategies conducted in 2019 and 2020 under Mediterranean climatic conditions using surface drip (SD) and subsurface drip (SSD) systems. Strategies investigated were: regulated deficit irrigation (RDI), conventional deficit irrigation (DI25, DI50, DI75), full irrigation (FI) and rainfed treatment. The highest grain yield was observed in FI treatments; RDI treatments produced 5% lower grain yield than the FI treatments, although the RDI treatments resulted in water savings of 23 and 21% for SD and SSD systems, respectively. DI treatments resulted in lower leaf water potential (LWP) and higher crop water-stress index (CWSI) compared to FI in both systems values. The results showed that optimum irrigation conditions to obtain the highest amaranth grain yields were associated with an LWP of −1.0 MPa and an average CWSI of about 0.25. The FI treatments under SSD systems had the highest grain production, followed by FI under SD and RDI under both the drip systems. Under SD and SSD systems, RDI saved 23 and 21% water, respectively, and produced a yield statistically comparable to that of FI. The SSD methods generated higher net income than SD. From these results it can be concluded that both RDI and DI75 could be a good alternative to FI under the conditions of water scarcity in the Mediterranean region.

Effect of center-pivot and subsurface drip irrigation systems on growth and evapotranspiration of volunteer corn in corn, soybean, and sorghum

Abstract Volunteer corn (Zea mays L.) is a competitive weed in corn-based cropping systems. Scientific literature does not exist about the water use of volunteer corn grown in different crops and irrigation systems. The objectives of this study were to characterize the growth and evapotranspiration (ETa) of volunteer corn in corn, soybean [Glycine max (L). Merr.], and sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] under center-pivot irrigation (CPI) and subsurface drip irrigation (SDI) systems. Field experiments were conducted in south-central Nebraska in 2021 and 2022. Soil moisture sensors were installed at depths of 0 to 0.30, 0.30 to 0.60, and 0.60 to 0.90 m to track soil water balance and quantify seasonal total ETa. Corn was the most competitive, as volunteer corn had the lowest biomass, leaf area, and plant height compared with the fallow. Soybean was the least competitive with volunteer corn, as the plant height, biomass, and leaf area of volunteer corn in soybean were similar to fallow at 15, 30, 45, and 60 d after transplanting (DATr). Averaged across crop treatments, irrigation type did not affect volunteer corn growth at 15 to 45 DATr. Soil water depletion and ETa were similar across crop treatments with and without volunteer corn, as water was not a limiting factor in this study. The ETa of volunteer corn was the highest in soybean (623 mm), followed by sorghum (622 mm), and corn (617 mm) under CPI. The SDI had higher irrigation efficiency, because without affecting crop yield, it had 3%, 6%, and 8% lower ETa in soybean (605 mm), sorghum (585 mm), and corn (571 mm), respectively. Although soil water use did not differ with volunteer corn infestation, a soybean yield loss of 27% was observed, which suggests that volunteer corn may not compete for moisture under fully irrigated conditions; however, it can impact the crop yield potential due to competition for factors other than soil moisture.

Maximizing Growth and Yield Components: Comparative Analysis of Surface and Subsurface Drip Irrigation in Intensively Farmed Rice Systems

Water scarcity is a critical issue in arid and semi-arid regions worldwide, necessitating efficient irrigation methods in agriculture. This study evaluated the effectiveness of surface and subsurface drip irrigation systems in direct-seeded rice (DSR) followed by zero-till wheat or maize, compared to conventional puddled transplanted rice (PTR) systems. The two-year experiment, conducted at the International Rice Research Institute's South Asia Regional Centre in Varanasi, India, employed a randomized complete block design with eight treatments. Results showed that DSR followed by zero-till wheat with subsurface drip irrigation at 60-cm spacing significantly outperformed other treatments. This system increased rice grain yield by 6.52% and 18.82%, straw yield by 7.68% and 13.45%, and total biomass by 8.30% and 9.73% in 2020 and 2021, respectively, compared to PTR followed by zero-till wheat. Subsurface drip irrigation also led to improved plant growth parameters, including plant height and number of tillers, and enhanced yield attributes such as number of panicles and filled grains per panicle. The study concludes that subsurface drip irrigation in DSR systems offers a promising solution for sustainable intensification and efficient use of water and energy in rice-based cropping systems. However, long-term, multi-location trials are recommended to establish precise water and energy savings under various conditions.

Growth Performance of Sabia Grass Irrigated by Drippers Installed in Subsurface

Studies to improve the use of subsurface drippers in pasture formation are needed. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the germination and emergence of Sabia grass as a function of drippers installed at different depths. The study was conducted in pots in Viçosa, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. The experiment was conducted using a completely randomized design with four replicates. The experimental layout featured split plots over time, where the main plots consisted of three cultivation cycles and the subplots represented various dripper installation depths. The three sowing dates were 26 March, 12 April, and 29 April 2022. Drip tapes were installed at seven different depths: 0 (superficial), 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 cm. The results showed that the reduction in water potential, associated with increased temperature, resulted in lower performance of Sabia grass seeds. Seed germination and parameters related to germination speed were negatively impacted by the increase in dripper installation depth, with a 30–40% reduction in germination speed observed at depths greater than 15 cm. Drippers installed at 15–20 cm depth in clayey soil were ideal, providing a balance between reducing soil water evaporation and maintaining seedling emergence rates. Compared to surface installation, this depth improved seed performance by up to 25%, while enhancing operability and minimizing water loss. It is recommended to install drippers at a depth of 15–20 cm in subsurface drip irrigation systems in clayey soil areas to achieve benefits such as decreased soil water evaporation and improved operability compared to surface systems.

Effects of phosphorus fertilizer type and dripline depth on root and soil nutrient distribution, nutrient uptake, and maize yield under subsurface drip fertigation

ContextSubsurface drip irrigation can potentially increase nutrient uptake by altering the spatial distribution of nutrients and roots, but the efficiency enhancement potential of different phosphorus (P) sources combined with varying dripline depths still requires further evaluation. MethodsWe established a 2-year field experiment with spring maize in 2021 and 2022 to determine the regulatory effects of three P sources [P1, monoammonium phosphate (MAP); P2, ammonium polyphosphate (APP); and P0, no P] and three dripline depths (D0, surface drip irrigation, 0 cm; D15, subsurface at 15 cm depth; and D30, subsurface at 30 cm depth) on the soil NO3-N, NH4-N and Olsen-P distribution, root distribution, nitrogen (N) fertilizer partial factor productivity (PFPN) and P use efficiency (PUE), and grain yield. ResultsWe found a significant coupling effect between the P source and dripline depth, both of which significantly impacted soil nutrients and root distribution, grain yield, PFPN, and PUE. In P1D15 and P2D15, the highest soil NO3-N and Olsen-P contents were observed at soil depths of 0–30 and 10–20 cm and at 0–30 and 10–30 cm, respectively. Similarly, in P1D30 and P2D30, which were 20–40 and 20–40 cm, and 20–40 and 30–60 cm, respectively. Compared to the other treatments, P2D15 and P1D30 exhibited considerable increases in root length density at the 30–60 cm soil depth of 37∼52 % and 28∼58 %, respectively. Regardless of the dripline depth, P0 resulted in the lowest yield during both growing seasons. P1D30 and P2D15 were found to be the optimal combinations for achieving higher grain yield, PFPN, and PUE, as they were able to achieve a high degree of coordination between soil available N and Olsen-P, as well as root distribution. ConclusionsThe recommended approach for optimizing nutrient and root spatial distributions under subsurface drip irrigation systems involves the use of poly-P fertilizer (APP) in conjunction with shallow dripline depth and ortho-P fertilizer (MAP) paired with deep dripline depth, which provides valuable guidance for co-fertigation practices involving N and P fertilizers.

Soil chemical characteristics, yield and technological quality of sugarcane under subsurface drip irrigation with treated sewage effluent

ABSTRACT Sugarcane cultivation requires sustainable strategies to meet water and nutritional needs. This study tested the hypothesis that irrigation with treated sewage effluent (TSE) can meet the water needs of sugarcane plants, improving their technological quality and yield. The objective of this study was to assess the effects of subsurface drip irrigation (SDI) with TSE or surface reservoir water (SRW) on soil chemical characteristics and technological quality and productivity. Thus, an SDI system was installed at soil depths of 0.20 and 0.40 m to apply SRW and TSE to sugarcane plants, composing four irrigation treatments (TSE0.2 m, TSE0.4 m, SRW0.2 m and SRW0.4 m) and a control (non-irrigated treatment). Analyses of soil chemical characteristics in different layers showed no negative effects for the use of SDI, which maintained favorable soil conditions for sugarcane plantations. The surface layer (0–0.2 m) irrigated with SRW or TSE showed higher accumulation of nutrients and organic matter. The results confirmed the hypothesis that irrigation with TSE or SRW improves the technological quality and yield of sugarcane; the treatment TSE0.2 m showed the best results regarding increases in sugar yield and alcohol production. However, continuous monitoring of soil salinity is necessary in wastewater-irrigated agricultural systems.

Interaction Effects of Water and Nitrogen Practices on Wheat Yield, Water and Nitrogen Productivity under Drip Fertigation in Northern China

Water resource shortage and unreasonable application of nitrogen (N) fertilizer have been problems in wheat production of northern China. However, the interaction effects of water regimes and N practices on wheat root growth, grain yield, soil water, and inorganic N changes as well as water-N use efficiency are still unclear under drip irrigation. A field experiment was conducted during the 2020–2021 and 2021–2022 winter wheat (Triticum aestivum) growing seasons. In this study, three irrigation schedules (i.e., irrigation was applied up to 80% [D1], 75% [D2], and 70% [D3] as soon as the soil water content decreased to 65%, 60% or 55% of field capacity) and two N practices (i.e., N applied at the base, jointing, booting stages were 90, 72, 48 kg ha−1 [N1], and the base, jointing, booting, filling stages were 90, 40, 40, 40 kg ha−1 [N2], respectively) were considered. The decease in irrigation water amount was offset by the increase in soil water consumption. In addition, N practices significantly interacted with irrigation on soil NO3−–N accumulation (2021–2022), NH4+–N accumulation, SPAD value (2020–2021), N content in stems and grains at maturity, and average root length and weight density at the flowering stage. Irrigation, rather than N practices, significantly affected grain yield, total N uptake, crop N transformations (NT), the contribution of NT to grain (NTPC), water and N productivity, in which, for the value of these two seasons, D2 increased total N uptake by 18.1% (p < 0.05), and NT by 39.4% (p < 0.05) under N1 as compared to D3. Additionally, the highest WUE and ANUE were found in D2 during 2021–2022. Heavy irrigation water amount caused high a LAI; further analysis proved that the LAI was the key factor affecting grain yield, and positively and significantly correlated to yield. However, no significant difference in the LAI between D1 and D2 was found. N1 was beneficial to prevent N leaching and increase water and N use efficiency, biomass, and N transformation amount. This study recommends that D2 + N1 might be a promising system for manipulating irrigation and fertilization practices under sub-surface drip irrigation systems to improve water and N use efficiency and grain yields in semi-arid regions.

Assessing a semi-empirical model performance to predict the wetting patterns in subsurface drip irrigation

ContextBecause of the complexity of soil water distribution, accurate prediction of wetting pattern is not easily accessible and this has led to a inefficiency in some proposed models in the literature. These models do not consider the hydraulic characteristics of the irrigation system and are developed solely on the basis of the water volume or infiltration rate, soil hydrodynamic properties, and other conditions of the percolation environment. ObjectiveDue to the importance of the estimation of wetting front beneath Subsurface Drip Irrigation (SDI) laterals, a semi-empirical model using easily accessible data of the SDI system is proposed to predict the wetting patterns in both distribution and redistribution phases. The aforementioned model has been developed based on a novel approach that couples the governing equations of the lateral hydraulics with empirical equations derived by dimensional analysis. MethodsTo develop the model and evaluate its performance, three 16-mm drip line pipes with 0.2, 0.4, and 0.5 m emitter spacing, and 2–5 l/h discharge were placed at 0.20 m depth in a soil box filled with clay loam soil. Water was applied for 3 hours at 50, 100, and 150 kPa operating pressures, and the wetting patterns’ geometries were measured in each lateral after 1, 2, 3, and 24 h. The performance of the model was then assessed and compared with that of three other models. Results and conclusionThe result demonstrated that the proposed model provides the most accurate estimations of the wetting depths and widths. RMSE and MAE statistical indexes of the wetting depth were 0.001–0.002 m and 0.004–0.009 m, respectively, whereas those associated with the wetting width were 0.001–0.003 m and 0.005–0.016 m, respectively. These values resulted in the lowest error when compared with the corresponding obtained from other well-known models. Consequently, the model allows acceptable predictions of the wetting patterns using accessible hydraulic parameters of the SDI system. SignificanceUniquely, the results of the lateral hydraulic analysis were applied to determine the wetting front dimensions in this study. Also, the results demonstrated that the model was successful in wetting pattern prediction beneath the lateral as a line source. While other models usually are used to estimate the wetting front around a point source.

Conservation agriculture layered with subsurface drip fertigation influences weed dynamics, weed indices and productivity of rice-wheat system

A three-year field study was conducted to explore the use of Conservation Agriculture (CA) as a cost-effective alternative to conventional tillage (CT) in rice-wheat (RW) systems. Therefore, to minimize the weed menace while sustaining the system productivity, a three-year field study was undertaken with different CA-based practices layered with flooded (FI) and subsurface drip irrigation (SDI). In rice, weed density (WD) in Sc8 {Zero tillage direct seeded rice with residue (+R) and SDI} recorded 72.9% lowered then Sc1 (CT-Puddled transplanted rice) after three years. However, maximum WD (162 m−2) and dry matter (WDM; 772.8 g m−2) were recorded in ZTDSR without residue (-R) with FI (Sc3) during third year which reduced rice yield by ∼37%. In wheat, the WD and WDM of Phalaris minor, Coronopus didymus, Melilotus indica and other species lowered in CA with SDI system (Sc5-Sc8) than CTRW system (Sc1 and Sc2). Lowest weed index (WI) observed with Sc8 during third year, while diversity indices (H’, R, E) increased by 10, 57 and 10% under SDI system than CTW-R scenario (Sc1). CA-system improved productivity by 7.40–37.11% over CTRW systems in weed free (WF) conditions, regardless of residue and irrigation management. Under weedy check (WC), Sc8 was top yielder with yield of 8.32 Mg ha−1. Moreover, sustainable intensification (Sc7-Sc8) improved productivity by 35.2 and ∼52% than CTRW systems in WF and WC plots, respectively. In conclusion, CA+SDI scenarios may be recommended for RW system owing to their system yield enhancement, resource savings and weed reduction advantages.

Predição da distribuição espacial da água aplicada por gotejamento subsuperficial em solo argiloso

ABSTRACT In subsurface drip irrigation systems, knowledge of the three-dimensional advancement of water in the soil is essential for selecting emitter spacing and installation depth. This research aimed to develop and test different mathematical models to estimate water distribution in the soil under subsurface drip irrigation. The experiment was set up in a completely randomized design with four replicates. The experimental arrangement was of split-plot in time, with different dripper installation depths in the plots (0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 cm) and in the subplots irrigation application times (0, 60, 120, 180, and 240 min). Three models (SLIDE 6.0, polynomial regression, and SPSS 2.0) were constructed to estimate the water distribution in the soil profile. All models showed statistical indexes within acceptable ranges. In comparison, the model generated in the numerical software SLIDE 6.0 was the one that presented the best performance, followed by SPSS 2.0 and polynomial regression. The generated models were efficient and simple, producing good results in predicting the water distribution in the soil profile under the studied conditions.

Impacts on Soil and Cowpea Plants Fertigated with Sanitary Sewage through Subsurface Drip Irrigation

The application of sanitary sewage using subsurface drip irrigation can mitigate current challenges related to water availability and food production. However, before implementing these techniques, it is crucial to conduct studies to assess their impacts on soil and plants. The objective of this study was to evaluate chemical changes in the soil and the development of cowpeas subjected to sanitary sewage applied by drippers with different flow rates and installation depths. Drippers were positioned at various depths (0 to 30 cm) and operated with flow rates of 1.6 and 3.8 L h−1. Cowpeas were cultivated in pots with clayey soil, using synthetic sanitary sewage based on the maximum limit of nitrogen fertilization. Irrigation management was controlled in terms of soil moisture, which was monitored using TDR probes. The results indicated that reducing the depth of the drippers positively affected grain production and the development of cowpeas. Fertigation with sanitary sewage at greater depths increased soil phosphorus concentrations and base saturation. Dripper depth also influenced soil concentrations of phosphorus, potassium, calcium, and magnesium, while sodium concentrations decreased with greater depth. It is concluded that dripper flow rates did not impact soil chemical parameters or the agronomic characteristics of cowpeas. However, despite nutrient supply at greater depths, the subsurface drip irrigation system proved unsuitable for cowpea production in clayey soil.

Assessment of Broccoli (Brassica oleracea) Cultivation under Two Irrigation Systems in Central Iraq

A field experiment was conducted in the Abbasiya area of Najaf Governorate, located in the Middle Euphrates region during the winter season of 2022-2023. The primary focus of the study was to evaluate the performance of two irrigation systems, nano-irrigation, and subsurface drip irrigation, on broccoli plants grown in clay soil. The experimental design followed a Complete Randomized Block Design (CRBD). Nano-irrigation demonstrated several advantages over subsurface drip irrigation. It exhibited a reduction inater con-sumption and lower energy requirements for water pumping opera-tions. Notably, the root length of broccoli plants was significantly greater under the nano-irrigation system, with an increase of 18.2 cm compared to the drip irrigation system. The use of nano-irrigation resulted in better water use efficiency and energy efficien-cy, leading to improved root development in the broccoli plants. The study results indicated that nano-irrigation offers benefits in terms of water conservation and plant growth promotion, ultimately leading to increased overall productivity. This makes nano-irrigation an appealing option for improving water use efficiency in agriculture, particularly in regions that face water scarcity. Moreo-ver, there was no significant difference in yield between the nano-irrigation and subsurface drip irrigation systems.

Simulation-Based Assessment of Subsurface Drip Irrigation Efficiency for Crops Grown in Raised Beds

This paper considers the application of a scenario simulation technique to assess subsurface drip irrigation system efficiency while using it to irrigate crops grown under raised bed technology. For simulating purposes, we use a model based on the two-dimensional Richards equation stated in terms of water head in a curvilinear domain. Solutions to problems are obtained using a finite-difference scheme with dynamic time step change. Using the data from pressure measurements obtained while growing potatoes on sandy loess soil in production conditions, we performed a calibration of the model using the particle swarm optimization algorithm. Further, the accuracy of the model was tested and average absolute errors in the range from 3.16 to 5.29 kPa were obtained. Having a calibrated model, we performed a series of simulations with different irrigation pipeline placements determining the configuration under which water losses are minimal. The simulated configuration, under which infiltration losses were minimal, was the installation of pipelines under the raised bed at the depth of 10 cm below the soil surface. The results confirm that the applied technique can be used for decision-making support while designing subsurface drip irrigation systems combined with raised bed growing technology.

Effect of treated wastewater irrigation on ornamental plants: Case study of Lantana and Hibiscus, Morocco

AbstractIn water stressed countries such as Morocco, the use of treated wastewater represents a strategic perspective for sustainable agricultural development. However, technological and management innovations are needed to make it feasible and effective. The main objective of this work is to evaluate the effect of irrigation with treated wastewater compared with fresh water on the growth of two ornamental plants: Rosa Sinensis hibiscus and Lantana Camara. The study also aimed to examine the impact of treated wastewater on the hydraulic performance of different irrigation systems. To carry out this study, irrigation was applied by two irrigation systems: subsurface drip irrigation and surface drip irrigation. Also, two sources of water were compared: treated wastewater from the WWTP of M'zar (tertiary treatment) and well water, each for a duration of 2 months. The results obtained showed that the treated wastewater generally promoted a better development of agronomic parameters such as height, number of branches, leaves, and flowers for both plants. The same observation was also made regarding the esthetical parameter. For the irrigation system effect, the results obtained showed a better development under the subsurface drip irrigation system; thus, the combination of treated wastewater and subsurface drip irrigation provided the best results for both plants. Regarding the hydraulic performance of the irrigation system, no risk of clogging of the distributors was observed in relation to the water quality; the uniformity coefficient and distribution uniformity remained above 90%. It can therefore be deduced that the use of treated wastewater for irrigation of green spaces should be at the heart of water resource mobilization policies. in fact, it represents an excellent alternative for promoting national water management strategies.
