The Correlation between Students Reading Habit and Their Writing Ability of Narrative Text

The researcher’s conducted a research at State Islamic Senior High School 1 Pekanbaru. The formulation the problems are : How is the students reading habit? How is the students’ ability of writing narrative text? Is there any significant correlation between students reading habit and their ability in writing narrative text? The design of this reseach study was correlational research. The total number of population was 262 students. The researcher used purposive sampling by taking only one class as sample 34. To analyze the data, the researcher used questionnaire and written test. Questionnaire is used to collect the data about students reading habit. The written test of narrative text was intended to find out students writing ability of narrative text. Based on data analysis, the writer found that the average score of the students’ questionnaire for students reading habit is 60.1. it is categorized into good level. students writing ability is 72.4, the score is categorized good level. the correlation between students reading habit and their ability of writing applied to the sample is 0.629, and consulting to the critical values of the r Product Moment with 95% confidence level and the number of subjects 34 was 0.339. Therefore, the writer concludes that there is a significant positive correlation between students reading habit (X) and their ability of writing narrative text (Y).

THE ROLE OF LIBRARIANS IN INCREASING STUDENTS’ READING INTEREST IN SDN GUNUNG BATU 2, BOGOR CITYThe purpose of this study was to determine the Role of Librarians in Increasing Student Reading Interest and Habits at SDN Gunung Batu 2, Bogor City. This research is a qualitative research with a descriptive approach. The subjects of this study were students and school librarians at SDN Gunung Batu 2, Bogor City. This research was conducted in the odd semester of 2019/2020. The data collection techniques used were observation, documentation, and interviews. Data collection techniques using the Miles and Huberman method, namely data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusions are carried out continuously until it is complete so that the data is saturated. Test the validity of the data using triangulation of sources and techniques as well as conducting a member check. And the research results show some findings, namely the background of the role of librarians in increasing students 'reading interest as a form of librarian's success in increasing students' reading interest and habits at SDN Gunung Batu 2, Bogor City. Furthermore, based on the results of observations, interviews, and documentation carried out in the field to related parties who know the problems of this thesis. Librarians provide a mandatory library system for all scheduled classes, hold reading corners, provide good service, hold the latest collections in the library, cooperate with regional libraries, always attend seminars or workshops, always include students in storytelling competitions, read poetry which is related to increasing students' reading interest and habits. In increasing students 'reading interest and habits, librarians certainly have a positive impact on students' reading interests and habits in accordance with the expectations of the librarian's own role. Because the role of the librarian has shown good development for students to be more like, happy, and enthusiastic about visiting the library so that the interest and reading habits of students at SDN Gunung Batu 2 Kota Bogor have increased every year according to the existing percentage.

A comparative study of reading comprehension skills among Hungarian students in Hungary and Slovakia

AbstractThe present study aims to map the reading comprehension skills of the primary school students in Hungary and Slovakia and to see what differences there are in the reading habits, self-assessment and actual performance in reading comprehension between the two groups.A total of 240 survey respondents from the two countries and belonging to two age groups participated in this phase of research. The survey consisted of two parts. The first part was a self-completed questionnaire consisting of 23 questions, in which the students' sociological background, language use, reading habits, and subjective opinions related to the assessment of reading comprehension skills were assessed. The second part was a reading comprehension test, which consisted of three sets of texts and questions adapted to the cognitive abilities of the two age groups.An analysis of the answers shows that there is no significant difference between the self-evaluation of students in the two countries regarding their reading comprehension skills. There is however a difference between the reading habits of Hungarian students in Hungary vs. in Slovakia in both age groups, and a significant difference between the results of the reading comprehension test in the groups of students from the two countries.

To Read or Not to Read? Exploring the Reading Habits of Hospitality Management Students

ABSTRACT College educators may have concerns about the reading habits of their students in general and within disciplines, and may wish to understand more about their students’ reading habits. Therefore, this Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) study investigated students’ perceptions of their own reading habits; 124 surveys were collected from hospitality and tourism students at a university in the southeastern United States. Students at higher levels reported reading more than others, grade point average was related to reading, and several themes connected to their reading habits were identified. Based on the results of the study, implications are discussed, strategies for encouraging reading are provided, and further research is suggested.

Adolescente como lector accidental de textos literarios

Este estudio pretende conocer los títulos que se incluyen en los hábitos de lectura de los estudiantes de 4º de ESO y averiguar qué clásicos de la literatura infantil y juvenil universal conocen para analizar. Finalmente, qué relación existe entre estos datos y la naturaleza de los distintos centros educativos de procedencia. Se ha seleccionado una muestra representativa de 647 alumnos, con valoración muestral d=0.05, que respondieron a un cuestionario para determinar los distintos perfiles lectores. Los resultados indican cuatro grupos lectores: no lectores, lectores accidentales, medios y habituales. Se comprueba de manera significativa que alumnos categorizados como no lectores y lectores accidentales de obras académicas concentran el mismo número de lecturas por placer que lectores habituales. Se demuestra que existe una base común de lecturas a todos los jóvenes que son títulos con gran calado en el mercado editorial. Se verifica que la mayoría de los centros concentran una población lectora accidental. Los resultados de la investigación ofrecen argumentos para defender la necesidad de itinerarios formativos donde se incluyan títulos del interés del alumnado junto con obras canónicas para una educación literaria.

The importance of reading cannot be overstated. The persistent lack of a reading culture in South Africa has been reported by many scholars. Following the growing concern for the lack of reading habits of South Africans in general and students at the institutions of higher learning in particular, this quantitative study investigates the reading habits of students at the University of Limpopo, South Africa. The data were collected using a questionnaire which was completed by 98 students in the School of Education and Programme of Information Studies. The students were identified on the basis that they are being trained to encourage and promote the culture of reading in their work. Microsoft Excel was used to capture, calculate and organise the collected data for analysing. The major findings of this study were that the majority of the students at the University of Limpopo have poor reading habits and that they read for academic purposes only and not for pleasure. The study also revealed that the students were not reading for pleasure as a result of the unavailability of reading materials at the university. It is recommended that the library of the University of Limpopo introduce reading materials to accommodate students to read for pleasure and recreation. The development of lifelong reading interests and reading habits is a constant process which begins in the home, improves systematically in the school and is carried on in later life. Therefore, reading is not just for school, it is for life, as people have to “read to learn to live”.

Estimating the Relationship between Reading in Primary Education, Educational Attainment and Social Welfare. The Case of Extremadura (Spain)

The purpose of this paper is to analyse the relationship between the Social Welfare Index and the reading habits of primary school students in Extremadura (Spain). A study has been performed which consists of two parts. First, we conducted 4,288 surveys on reading habits in 87 municipalities. Second, we calculated the social welfare index. The statistical analysis refl ects two conclusions: firstly, educational and socio-economic policies have resulted in equal opportunities that allow for similar social possibilities throughout the territory; secondly, Educational Attainment of parents is the most decisive factor in obtaining the best results in terms of students' reading habits.

A Comparative Study on the Use of Social Media, Reading Habits and Academic Performance of Secondary School Students

Aim: A comparative study was conducted on how the use of social media affects the reading habit and academic performance of secondary school students.
 Study Design: The study adopted the descriptive survey research design to help elicit data from the target population through questionnaire, observations and interview instruments.
 Methodology: The questionnaires were randomly administered to both male and female students.
 Results: Social media is a great digital platform for learning and obtaining current information. There are consequences attached to the proper use and misuse among adolescent students. More than 50% of social media operators in secondary schools are users of Facebook. 58 out of 75 students who scored “A” grade in their favourite subject operated social media. 67.23% of the total respondents who use the social media didn’t score an “A” grade in their favourite subject. Students who operated more than one social media network scarcely scored an “A” grade. Only 3.5% of students spent up to 4 hours of reading every day. 46.5% read for 2-3 hours and 36.5% read for an hour. 11.5% read for 30munites while 2% read for less than 30 minutes.
 Conclusion: Students should be properly guided and given an adequate orientation before providing them with electronic devices like smart phones. Teachers should be encouraged to join large student groups. Off-topics and non-academic discussions should be curtailed.

Books in the Time of Screens: The Reading Habits of Slovenian Students

This research paper brings up the question of recreational reading habits among the generation of university students that were born after 1990 and grew up in a digital environment. The paper focuses on their self-reported reading habits. The students belong to two disciplinary domains (humanities and social sciences) at the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. A significant number of them were pre-service teachers. The research was conducted on a non-random sample of 429 students. Data were gathered using a printed questionnaire that included assessment scales of students' reading habits. These data were compared with data gathered in the online reading habits survey of the general Slovenian population that took place in autumn 2019 on a sample of 1000 participants, demographically representing Slovene general population. The key finding was that university students read more than members of the general population do, but still less than would be expected of future educators who will introduce book reading to pupils as the number of non-readers in student population was higher than expected. In addition, the data revealed that practically all students were able to read in at least one foreign language (predominantly in English) what is significantly higher than in general population. The paper indicates a few reasons for such outcomes and addresses the question of why recreational book reading matters in educational settings.

Reading habits of Vietnamese University English majors

Reading-comprehension abilities are inextricably linked to student success in academic contexts where reading serves as a primary means for conveying course content and displaying content learning (Anderson, 2015). The scarcity of studies on reading English for academic purposes in Vietnam, generally, and the reading habits of Vietnamese university students, more specifically, created the impetus for the research reported here. The study focused on the reading habits of Vietnamese university students in English-related majors, with particular attention paid to text medium (print/digital) and text language (Vietnamese/English) preferences. Data were collected with an online survey sent to a representative sampling of public universities across Vietnam. A total of 836 students, at 17 public universities, completed the survey. Findings provide an initial snapshot of Vietnamese university English majors’ reading habits. Of particular interest are how often students consult the Web to complete university assignments, despite their preference for print materials when reading for academic purposes; what challenges students encounter when reading on the Web; how much reading is assigned for university classes; and how reading habits change across years of study. Findings suggest numerous steps that can be taken to improve EAP reading instruction in Vietnam (and elsewhere).

This work is part of the project “Determining factors in the reading habits of secondary school students. A study from the variables of the educational context” (PR2017040), funded by the Own Research Plan of the University of Cádiz. The main objective is to know the reading consumption of Spanish teenagers. Specifically, the consumption of analog reading of students of 1st year of Compulsory Secondary Education in Spain is studied. A sample of students from the province of Cádiz (n=664) and from other Spanish provinces (n=192) responded to a questionnaire about their reading habits. It allowed, in the first instance, to determine if informants enjoy reading and, later, to gather information about what and in what format they read, the criteria on which they are based to choose their readings, how much time they dedicate to read and where they get their readings. The results indicate that this sector of the population prefers reading adventure books, chooses books by subject, reads more during holidays and uses their own books. However, it is confirmed that the development of the reading habit is still a subject to pass.

The main objective of the study is focused on analyzing those determining factors that affect the formation of new readers in the school in a global and integrating way. Taking as a reference the idea of the ecosystem or ecological environment of Bronfenbrenner (2001), an analogy is made with the educational system and the agents that intervene in the reading habits of adolescents in their educational stage of Compulsory Secondary Education (ESO). These approaches were used to review a Questionnaire on Reading Habits, which the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport presented in an ambitious Plan to Promote Reading in 2001 and to adapt it to the needs of the PR2017040 Project. The conclusions illustrate that this complex issue of reading habits cannot be studied with a questionnaire as the only research instrument, since it is necessary to give voice to the different agents that participate in the process and, therefore, agree with Molina et al. (2011) in proposing the design research model to understand and improve the educational reality through the consideration of natural contexts in all their complexity.

Evaluating Reading Habit among Junior Secondary School Students in Ekiti State in Nigeria

Abstract The study evaluated reading habit among students in Ekiti State Secondary Schools. The study specifically examined the frequency and time of reading among Junior Secondary School students in Ekiti State, the extent students read, how teachers’ attitudes affect their students reading habits, and ways reading habit can be improved. The descriptive research design of the survey type was adopted in this study. The population for the study consisted all of the Junior Secondary School Students in public secondary schools in Ekiti \central senatorial district. The size of the sample was 200 students drawn from ten public secondary schools using multistage sampling technique. A self-structured questionnaire tagged Reading Habit Questionnaire (RHQ) was used to collect relevant data for the study. The responses obtained were collated and analyzed using descriptive statistics. The findings revealed that most of the students rarely read as majority of them spend less than 2 hours daily on reading. They settle down to read only when given assignments or when examination was near. Based on the findings, it is therefore recommended among others that parents should teach their children to start reading from an early age and should provide reading materials for them. Influence of Entertainment Media, Cognitive Styles and Demographic Variables on Students’ Reading Habits in Yaba College of Technology Secondary School, Yaba, Lagos

The study sought to examine the “Influence of Entertainment Media, Cognitive Styles and Demographic Variables on Students’ Reading Habits in Yaba College of Technology Secondary School, Yaba-Lagos”. The survey correlation research design was adopted to establish the relationship among the study variables. Targeted population of the study is 627 students consisting of 302 and 325 JSS and SSS students in the 2018/2019 academic session. 200 students were sampled representing 32% of its total population, upon whom 200 copies of the study questionnaire were drawn via multistage sampling techniques. Complete data collected from 198 respondents were analysed quantitatively using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistics via SPSS version 20.0 to answer the study research questions and test formulated hypothesis while criteria mean was placed at 2.50 level of significance to record the following major findings: Entertainment media utilized by students such as smartphones, internet via laptops and television had significant positive influence their reading habits; likewise their cognitive styles and demographic variables. The study therefore recommends that management of Yaba College of Technology Secondary School should ensure that entertainment media resources be adequately made available for students’ use especially at the school library media resource centre under close monitoring while considering their cognitive styles and demographic variables to enhance their reading habits among others.Keywords: Students Reading Habit, Library, Entertainment Media, Cognitive Styles, Demographic Variables,

Hábitos de lectura en la juventud; un desafío para los docentes ecuatorianos.

Considerando la importancia de la lectura para la formación de estudiantes, se desarrolló una investigación con respecto a los hábitos de lectura de estudiantes de bachillerato Unidad Educativa 17 de julio y estudiantes de UNIANDES, sede Ibarra en las carreras de Administración de Empresas, Contabilidad y Auditoría. El objetivo fue establecer relación entre el hábito lector que tienen los estudiantes a nivel de bachillerato con estudiantes a nivel universitario. En el estudio se utilizó un diseño metodológico fundamentado en investigación cualitativa y cuantitativa, de corte trasversal, con el uso del método analítico sintético. Se determinó que los hábitos de lectura que se tiene a nivel de bachillerato persisten a nivel universitario y que constituyen en un desafío para los docentes.
