STUDENTS' PREFERENCE ON USING ONLINE TRANSLATOR IN ACADEMIC WRITING

This study investigates the preferences of fifth-semester students at UIN Raden Intan Lampung regarding the use of online translators in academic writing. Through a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected from 180 students via a six-item questionnaire focusing on general usage and the impacts on academic writing. The findings indicate that online translators are widely utilized, with the majority of students using them daily or weekly. Google Translate emerged as the most preferred tool due to its ease of use and comprehensive language support. Students primarily use online translators to translate words or phrases, understand foreign texts, and check grammar and sentence structure. The impact on academic writing is generally positive, with many students finding these tools effective in improving their writing quality and efficiency. However, challenges such as over-reliance on translators, misinterpretation of context, and lack of technical vocabulary were also noted

This research aims to investigate student’s perceptions of authoritative teachers, commonly referred to as "killer" lecturers, in the context of the teaching and learning process, communication, and the lecturer’s assessment standards. The research employs a qualitative descriptive approach. The study was conducted at the STIE Balikpapan campus, with subjects being fifth-semester students from the Faculty of Business Economics. Data collection was carried out using semi-structured questionnaires containing open-ended questions to explore students views in depth. The results indicate that students perceive "killer" lecturers as strict, difficult to joke with, having high assessment standards, and engaging in minimal interaction. The study also highlights how effective collaborative and interactive teaching styles can create a conducive learning environment to achieve established educational goals

Identification of Student Misconceptions in General Biology Courses using Four Tier Multiple Choice Tests Containing High Order Thinking Skills

This research aims to identify misconceptions of biology education students in the General Biology course. The method used in this research uses quantitative descriptive. The sample used in this research was Biology education students who had taken General Biology courses consisting of students in semesters 3, 5, and 7. Data collection was carried out using a test in the form of General Biology questions in a four-tier multiple-choice diagnostic format containing high-order thinking skills, totaling 35 questions. The research results showed that the percentage of misconceptions in each class was 43.80% (semester 3), 33.93% (semester 5), and 29.46% (semester 7). The highest percentage of misconception categories among third-semester students was found in the digestive system material (57.78%), fifth-semester students in ecology material (56.67%), and seventh-semester students in ecological material (40.00%). Misconceptions in students could be caused by students not being used to working on this type of question HOTS. To be able to answer correctly, students must be able to analyze and relate the data or information in the question to existing concepts

Enhancing English Learning in an Islamic University Context: Identifying and Addressing Key Challenges

This study explores the factors contributing to students' difficulties in achieving effective English learning at the Muslim University of Indonesia (UMI) and identifies strategies to overcome these challenges. Utilizing a qualitative descriptive research design, data were collected through observations, interviews, and documentation with five fifth-semester students from the English Department. The findings reveal six critical barriers: lack of practice, vocabulary deficiency, environmental factors, lack of interest, low self-confidence, and pronunciation challenges. These factors significantly hinder students' English language proficiency, which is essential for their academic and professional success. The study suggests targeted interventions, including increasing practice opportunities, enhancing vocabulary instruction, creating supportive learning environments, tailoring materials to students' interests, building confidence, and improving pronunciation practice. The implications of these findings highlight the need for comprehensive and context-specific strategies in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) education. Future research should further investigate these areas, considering alternative interpretations and the long-term impact of these factors on language proficiency. By addressing these challenges, educators and policymakers can enhance English language education and support students in achieving their full potential.

Lecturer’s Belief and Classroom Practices on The Use of Video in English Language Teaching

This study aims to investigate the EFL lecturer's beliefs in teaching speaking using video to fifth-semester students in a private university in Indonesia. A qualitative method was employed as the design of this study, involving an in-depth exploration of the lecturer's perspectives and practices. An English teacher was purposefully selected as the research subject of the study. The data were collected through stimulated recall and semi-structured interviews, allowing for a comprehensive understanding of the lecturer's beliefs and classroom practices. The findings were categorized into six major themes: 1) the source of the lecturer's belief in teaching speaking using video; 2) the purpose of using video in teaching speaking skills; 3) the reasons for using video in teaching speaking skills; 4) the reflection of those beliefs in classroom practices; 5) considerations in choosing the videos; and 6) challenges faced by the lecturer in teaching speaking using video. The results revealed that there was no discrepancy between the teacher's beliefs and teaching practices. The lecturer believes that using video in teaching speaking classes enables students to learn individually, which is reflected in his teaching practice. For example, the lecturer allows students to watch videos individually, facilitating a more personalized learning experience. This alignment between belief and practice underscores the importance of integrating multimedia tools in language teaching, as they can enhance student engagement and autonomy. The study highlights the potential of videos as a valuable resource in language education, particularly in improving speaking skills among EFL learners

Enhancing English Reading Proficiency through Student Reading Habits

This research aims to obtain students' reading habits to strengthen their English reading skills. This research uses a desciptive qualitative approach. This research examines phenomena related to students' reading habits in strengthening and improving English reading skills. The sample was 100 fifth-semester students of the English Reading Class. The sampling technique uses purposive sampling. The data collection process uses three types of data: 1) observations obtained to observe students' reading habits during learning activities and 2) questionnaires given to students to find out their habits outside the classroom according to their point of view and the situations they experience. The data analysis technique uses three stages, namely data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. The results of this research conclude that students have good reading habits in the campus environment and read a lot of books to complete their coursework. Meanwhile, reading activity at home is very low and parental support in building reading habits is also non-existent because reading activities together are not carried out at home. The results of this research also have implications for teachers' understanding of how to motivate students to have high reading habits outside the classroom and also provide authentic teaching materials so that reading activities can be done more outside the classroom.

The Online Game Design Uses Scratch, Geogebra, and Geogebra AR Through Mathematics Education Multimedia Lectures

This study aims to design online mathematics games using Scratch, Geogebra, and Geogebra AR through multimedia education mathematics courses. This study used the multimedia development life cycle. Participants in the study were 41 students (13 male and 28 female) of fifth-semester in a multimedia course in mathematics education at a university in West Java, Indonesia. The research instrument was a questionnaire through Google Forms, performance appraisal, observation, and interviews. Based on the research results it is known that Scratch, Geogebra, and Geogebra AR can be used in math game design even though previous students have not studied both, but the results are good. The author suggests that students can try out these math games at school during research or teaching practice. In addition, the authors hope that the game can be published on the internet so that it can be used by many students.

Peer Tutoring Activities Implementation in Arabic Language Development at Indonesian Islamic Universities

This study explores the utilization of peer tutoring activities to enhance Arabic language development in higher education, addressing challenges such as knowledge gaps and the lack of a conducive learning environment. Focusing on the Arabic Language Education Study Program at FTIK IAIN Palangka Raya, the research investigates the involvement of third and fifth-semester students in peer tutoring activities organized by HMPS PBA. Employing a qualitative approach, data collection involves interviews, observations, and documentation, with four Arabic tutors and lecturers serving as subjects and informants, respectively. Through analysis stages including data collection, reduction, presentation, and conclusion, the study examines the efficacy of peer tutoring in Arabic language learning. Findings reveal that tutors engage in preparatory steps, observation, and implementation to facilitate Arabic language development effectively. Students exhibit increased participation and enthusiasm, bolstering their confidence in learning Arabic. The research underscores the potential of peer tutoring to enhance Arabic language education in higher education settings, particularly within the Arabic Language Education Study Program at IAIN Palangka Raya.

Silos to Synergy: Harnessing Integrated Learning for Improved Outcomes

Abstract— In recent days, integrated learning emerges as a potent pedagogical approach, intertwining diverse subjects to foster comprehensive education for millennial learners. Its benefits span across enhanced learning outcomes, improved critical thinking, creative problem solving, and engaged learning. The research study aims to create an effective integrated learning experience for the undergraduate students of information technology program. Around 65 students of fifth semester B.Tech IT program and three faculty members have participated in the research study. Project-Based Learning (PBL) has been adapted to creating meaningful cross-curricular experiences. The proposed PBL enables the learners to develop simulations for various cryptographic algorithms which were learnt in the course on Information security. The project also intertwines the concepts covered in other courses like Web Technologies, Software Testing and System Thinking. The PBL has been carefully designed with focus on problem statements, learning goals, project milestones, calendar and rubrics for assessment. Simulations developed by the learners in teams are integrated to create a complete software package which could serve as a virtual lab for cryptography and information security course. The experimental study on integrated learning has resulted in a usable educational software product for teaching cryptographic algorithms. Also, there is a significant enhancement in the attainment of course outcomes and satisfaction index of the learners. The positive outcome in learning achievements and student engagement affirm integrated learning's value. Various plans to address the implementation challenges in integrated learning are also discussed in the research article. The authors believe that the manuscript will serve as a beginner’s guide to academicians wishing to practice integrated learning in their classrooms. Penerapan Argumentasi dan Bahan Ajar dalam Meningkatkan Pemahaman Materi Biologi Mahasiswa

Scientific argumentation aimed at reaching a rational perspective on science, scientific concepts, or elements within a scientific procedure. This study is experimental research employing a pretest-posttest control group design. The research was conducted with a population of 44 fifth-semester students majoring in biology education. The sample selection was performed using random sampling, consisting of two classes (experimental and control), each comprising 22 students. Data for the research were collected through pretests and posttests, which included 10 questions with five argumentation indicators via the minimum structure essay test. The research findings demonstrated an enhancement in students' ability to articulate their comprehension of the material when utilizing teaching materials compared to those who did not. As a result, it is recommended that the incorporation of teaching materials into the learning process be implemented in various other courses to foster the development of argumentation skills, including the presentation of claims, data, warrants, backing, and effective rebuttals in the learning process.

Analysis of the Learning Models Needs in Hybrid Class Microteaching to Improve the Teaching Competencies

The purpose of this study is to analyze the need for learning models in microteaching courses for hybrid learning environments. Quantitative descriptive techniques are the research methods used; these techniques are intended to use quantitative data to describe and analyze specific phenomena or variables in the population. This approach aims to give an accurate picture of the situation or phenomenon under study rather than to test a hypothesis or bring about change. At this point, 80 enrolled in the Economics Study Program at Sriwijaya University will participate in a survey that takes the form of a questionnaire administered by researchers to fifth-semester students. The study's findings demonstrate the continued need for high-quality instruction in hybrid classes for microteaching courses. This study includes the development of an efficient learning model for hybrid classes as well as the utilization of current technology to foster a positive microteaching environment in newly created hybrid class.

Ikhtibār Mi’yār al-Kafā’ah fī al-Lugah al-ʽArabiyyah bi-Mutașaffiḥ al-Imtiḥān al-Āmin fī Jāmiʽah Walisongo al-Islāmiyyah al-Ḥukūmiyyah Semarang

The objectives of the study include: 1. Describe the IMKA test with Safe Exam Browser (SEB), 2. Know the success rate achieved in the test. The research method used is qualitative descriptive analysis, data was collected in the form of observation, interviews, documentation, and triangulation combinations. Spradley model data analysis consists of domain analysis (categorization), taxonomic analysis (category elaboration), and componential analysis (looking for specific differences). The research time is divided into pre, implementation, and post. Pre-research in September 2021. The implementation is from September 2021 until the end of the online exam on August 8, 2022. Post is the time after the exam is over until the collection of the Language certificate. The primary sample/data source in this study is third and fifth-semester students from all departments and faculties within UIN Walisongo totaling 8,755 students with a schedule of 4 periods in July and 6 periods in August. The results showed that the IMKA Test with CBT type SEB has not shown the success of Arabic language skills in UIN Walisongo students, marked by a student graduation rate of 17.63% with the number of students graduating as many as 1,544 students.

Belajar Kosa Kata Bahasa Inggris Melalui Lagu Dengan Aktivitas Stereophonic Styrofoam: SD IT Nurul Fikri Palangka Raya

The initiative "FUN ENGLISH LISTENING FOR KIDS" at SD IT Nurul Fikri aims to enhance the English language proficiency of young learners through innovative methods. This project utilizes stereophonic styrofoam to introduce and reinforce English vocabulary among elementary school students. Under the guidance of fifth-semester students from the English Language Teaching Program at IAIN Palangka Raya, the project involves stages of introducing vocabulary, using styrofoam to associate sounds with vocabulary, and interactive sessions. This engaging learning method has successfully improved the English skills of elementary students at SD IT Nurul Fikri, demonstrating the potential of creative methods in language education.

The Effectiveness of Classical Music Background in Teaching Writing

This study discusses the effectiveness of incorporating classical music in teaching writing, using a quantitative research method. The research was conducted on 39 students from two groups in the fifth semester English Educational Program of IAIN Bone, with 20 students in the experimental group and 19 students in the control group. The researcher administered pretests, treatments, and posttests, and analyzed the data using mean score and t-test formulas. The results of the study indicate that the students in the experimental group who received treatment with classical music background showed improvement in their writing achievement compared to the control group, who received treatment without the classical music background. However, the improvement was not considered significant. Therefore, it can be concluded that the use of classical music background in teaching writing did not have a significant impact on the writing achievement of fifth-semester students in the English Educational Program of IAIN Bone.

AN EXPLORATORY STUDY ON STUDENTS’ ANXIETY IN THE PROCESS OF COMPOSING AN ENGLISH ESSAY

Writing proficiency is a crucial language skill for students to acquire, necessitating the production of compositions such as essays. This research aims to identify the manifestations of anxiety experienced by students during the composition of English essays and to ascertain the underlying factors precipitating such apprehension. Participants consisted of 34 fifth-semester students from the Department of English Education at Universitas Syiah Kuala. Employing qualitative methodology, the study utilized questionnaires and interviews as research instruments to collect data. Questionnaires were used to capture data concerning diverse forms of student anxiety, while interviews were conducted to elucidate the determinants of anxiety specifically related to composing English essays. Outcomes revealed that cognitive anxiety was predominant, afflicting 43.5% of fifth-semester students, showcasing its prevalence in this cohort. Additionally, language complexities, self-confidence deficits, fear of critical evaluation, and the pursuit of perfection emerged as pivotal sources of essay-writing apprehension. These findings underline the multifaceted nature of student anxiety during English essay composition, thereby serving as a valuable resource for educational stakeholders seeking insights to enhance students' writing competencies.

PENGARUH MODEL PEMBELAJARAN INQUIRY TERHADAP KEMANDIRIAN BELAJAR MAHASISWA

In the implementation of higher education, building student independence in learning is an important part. In a higher education environment, students who can study independently will be better prepared to face changes in the dynamic and fast world of work. Development of student learning independence can be done by choosing a learning model that develops students' thinking skills and self-confidence. One way is to apply the inquiry learning model which is a learning model that is oriented towards students' ability to build their knowledge independently. This study aims to determine the effect of the inquiry learning model on student learning independence in the biology education study program at the University of West Sulawesi. This type of research is quasi-experimental research. This research was carried out in the odd semester of the 2022/2023 school year with a population of all fifth-semester students who programmed the Learning Innovation course by taking samples using a purposive sampling technique so that class A and class B became the research sample with a total of 58 students. The instrument used in this study was a learning independence questionnaire consisting of 5 indicators and 20 questions. Data analysis was carried out using descriptive analysis to determine the increase in the value of student learning independence and inferential analysis to test the hypothesis using the Anacova test. The results of the hypothesis test using Anacova obtained a significance value of 0.001 <0.05 so it can be said that H0 is rejected and H1 is accepted which means that there is an influence of the application of the inquiry learning model on the learning independence of students in the Biology Education Study Program, Universitas Sulawesi Barat

The EFL Students’ Anxiety in an Online Public Speaking Class at an Indonesian University

One of the main challenges for English as Foreign Language (EFL) students in the public speaking class was Foreign Language Anxiety (FLA). Due to COVID-19, the public speaking class must be conducted online. This study aimed to examine the level of FLA in online public speaking classes and discovered the impacts on students' feelings upon joining the online public speaking class. This research used a quantitative research approach. The research was conducted in the online public speaking classes for fifth-semester students at Sanata Dharma University. The researchers took 50 students from the total population of 159 students in batch 2019. The level of FLA was investigated through the Modified Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (MFLCAS), and the impacts of FLA were explored using Modified Foreign Language Virtual Classroom Anxiety Scale (MFLVCAS). The results showed that students experienced a moderate level of FLA with a mean of 3,00 by three dimensions; Communication Apprehension (CA), Fear of Negative Evaluation (FNE), and Test Anxiety (TA). There were no adverse impacts from online public speaking classes related to FLVCAS. The online classroom setting did not bring another source of anxiety to the students.

Ideas Organization In Student Writing: Essay Assessments In EFL Classroom

Ideas organization is an important part of most good essay writing theory. A very common problem with long texts is poor organization. An essay has a few components on it such as thesis statement, unity, organization, body, conclusion, paragraph, transition, and effective sentence. This study focuses on the organization of ideas in the fifth semester essay writing at the English Department of Muhammadiyah Malang University. The method used in this study was a descriptive qualitative research. The researcher selected class A of fifth-semester students from the English Department of Muhammadiyah Malang University as the respondent. In addition, the data of this study were articles or compositions of essays and student statements obtained from interviews. The results showed that nearly 75% of students in the fifth semester of the A class of English Department of Muhammadiyah Malang University found a way to organize their ideas when writing an essay. As a result, 25% of students had difficulty organizing their thoughts and also indicated that they knew the problems they were facing and how to solve them by presenting appropriate solutions. These results have implications for writing theories and writing practice.

THE CORRELATION BETWEEN THE SELF-DIRECTED LEARNING AND READING COMPREHENSION AT UNIVERSITAS RIAU

This research aimed to find out the correlation between self- directed learning and reading comprehension of the fifth- semester students of the English department of FKIP Universitas Riau. The researchers used a descriptive quantitative method as the data approach. The samples of this research were 74 students from the fifth-semester students of the English department of FKIP Universitas Riau. The research instruments are a questionnaire and a test. The questionnaire is for the data on self-directed learning while the test is for the data on reading comprehension. To analyze the data, the researchers employed SPSS Statistics 25. The data analysis showed that the mean score of the student's self-directed learning is 215.18, classified as moderate level, while the mean score of the student's reading comprehension is 56.35, categorized as moderate level. Moreover, the research finding showed the correlation coefficient of the two variables is 0.694, indicating a positive and moderate correlation. Also, the determinant coefficient is 0.48 which implies self-directedlearning has a 48% influence on the students’ reading comprehension, leaving the other 52% to other factors. After finding that there is a moderate relationship between self- directed learning and reading comprehension, it is suggested that students should apply self-directed learning activities well, for it can result in better reading comprehension. This is mainly because self-directed learning gives them the freedom to choose their own reading materials and learning objectives.

VARIOUS STUDENT RESPONSES TO THE IMPLEMENTATION OF ONLINE LECTURES AND VARIOUS ACCOMPANYING ASPECTS

This study aimed to describe the participant's responses to implementing online lectures and various accompanying aspects. The research method chosen is a qualitative descriptive method. The research participants comprised 85 fifth-semester students at a tertiary institution in Indonesia who had attended online lectures and used the Learning Management System (LMS) service. Identification, clarification, reduction, analysis, and description techniques were carried out to process data from questionnaires and interviews to answer the problems under study. The study results show that participants in online lectures prefer the zoom meeting platform for synchronous lecture types. With the recording facility, participants can re-learn through the LMS application in the video link feature. However, participants prefer the WhatsApp application to discuss their problems. The biggest obstacle they face in online lectures is the stability of the internet network, even though most of them have internet access on a subscription basis. The weakness of online lectures is the lack of interaction, the hope of participants after the pandemic is over is the implementation of blended lectures with the distribution of lecture components in online and offline sessions.
