Breaking Textbook Barriers: PowToon Videos in Engaging ICT Learning for Young EFL Learners

The significant interest in the development and integration of information and communication technologies (ICT) in the field of education is still marked with an unequal level of performance in many areas. This research explores the researcher-teacher collaboration of creating and using PowToon video in teaching English to achieve the mission of elevating the ICT competence of teachers and students in schools, especially in areas that are underdeveloped or far from the central government. The participants of the study include the sole English teacher of SD Kartika VI-7 Malang and twenty students in the fifth grade. Through four steps (analysing, designing, implementing, evaluating), this descriptive qualitative study collected data from classroom observation, teacher interview, expert analysis of the developed media, and short evaluation questionnaire. Results from the analysis stage confirmed the preliminary results of the English class’s minimal ICT usage. The design stage is where the researchers and the teacher worked together to adapt the textbook materials into interesting PowToon video for the students. The implementation stage is where the teacher used the video validated by three experts of material, media, and language. Finally, the media’s effectiveness is evaluated based on the questionnaire responses given by the students. The research concludes that the validation process of the PowToon ascertained its quality for effective English instruction to motivate student engagement. Although neither PowToon video nor its implementation is particularly new, they are novel, effective, and—arguably most importantly—friendly teaching media for classrooms that have yet to adapt with the rapid technological world.

How school policies, strategies, and relational factors contribute to teacher victimization and school safety.

In this study, we examined how school policies and strategies (i.e., positive discipline, hardening strategies, and positive behavioral strategies) affect teacher relational factors and teacher reports of victimization and safety. Specifically, we examined the mediational roles of teacher support of student learning, maltreatment of students by teachers, and teachers' differential treatment of students in schools. Using a sample of 6643 pre-K-12th-grade teachers, path analysis results revealed that positive behavior strategies, hardening strategies, and positive discipline were indirectly associated with teacher victimization and sense of safety. Additionally, teachers' perceptions of other teachers maltreating students had the greatest contributions to their sense of safety and victimization by students. Positive discipline was directly and indirectly associated with teacher victimization and safety. Implications and directions for future studies are discussed.

LEARNER AUTONOMY IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE ACQUISITION

The article discusses the concept of “learner autonomy”, examines the phenomenon of self-control as a means of developing autonomy, assesses the ability of students to selfcontrol the level of proficiency in speaking skills in the process of learning a foreign language in specialised classes of secondary school, identifies key skills that contribute to personal autonomous development of students. The author presents the results of identifying and comparing the levels of autonomy of secondary (7th form) and high (10th form) school students in order to determine their readiness to work on individual educational routes in preparation for the final tests in English.

Problems and Countermeasures in the Construction of Campus Catering and Health E-commerce Platform

Nowadays, there are many cafeterias on campus with a wide variety of options. Many students may often be confused about what to eat and how to eat more cheaply and healthily, in order to ensure that students can eat with peace of mind and also keep track of their basic health status at any time. Taking Northwest Minzu University as an example, this paper first investigates the operation of the campus canteen, and then conducts a comprehensive analysis of the students' dining conditions and basic health conditions. By building and implementing a campus catering and health e-commerce trade platform, problems are identified and improved and continuously improved based on the actual situation. Provide more efficient service guarantees and a comfortable dining environment for the dietary health of teachers and students in school.

Bright light therapy and early morning attention, mathematical performance, electroencephalography and brain connectivity in adolescents with morning sleepiness.

Adolescents typically sleep too little and feel drowsy during morning classes. We assessed whether morning use of an LED bright light device could increase alertness in school students. Twenty-six (8M/18F) healthy, unmedicated participants, ages 13-18 years, (mean 17.1±1.4) were recruited following screenings to exclude psychopathology. Baseline assessments were made of actigraph-assessed sleep, attention, math solving ability, electroencephalography and structural and functional MRI (N = 10-11, pre-post). Participants nonrandomly received 3-4 weeks of bright light therapy (BLT) for 30 minutes each morning and used blue light blocking glasses for 2 hours before bedtime. BLT devices were modified to surreptitiously record degree of use so that the hypothesis tested was whether there was a significant relationship between degree of use and outcome. They were used 57±18% (range 23%-90%) of recommended time. There was a significant association between degree of use and: (1) increased beta spectral power in frontal EEG leads (primary measure); (2) greater post-test improvement in math performance and reduction in errors of omission on attention test; (3) reduced day-to-day variability in bed times, sleep onset, and sleep duration during school days; (4) increased dentate gyrus volume and (5) enhanced frontal connectivity with temporal, occipital and cerebellar regions during Go/No-Go task performance. BLT was associated with improvement in sleep cycle consistency, arousal, attention and functional connectivity, but not sleep onset or duration (primary measures). Although this was an open study, it suggests that use of bright morning light and blue light blocking glasses before bed may benefit adolescents experiencing daytime sleepiness. Study on the National Identity Education Intentions of Pre-Service Teachers: Evidence from PLS-SEM and fsQCA

National identity education is a form of education that fosters a stable sense of national identity among citizens and plays a crucial role in the sustainable development of the country. However, with the deepening of economic globalisation and cultural pluralism, pre-service teachers, in their dual roles as school students and prospective teachers, have encountered challenges in practicing their intention to implement national identity education. This study constructed a model of influencing pre-service teachers’ intention to implement national identity education based on the theory of planned behaviour (TPB) and the cognitive evaluation theory (CET) with the aim of explaining and analysing the development path of pre-service teachers’ educational intentions. The model was validated using PLS-SEM and fsQCA on data from 280 pre-service teachers in teacher training colleges in northern China. The PLS-SEM results indicated that subjective norms, relatedness need, and study resources directly and positively influenced pre-service teachers’ educational intentions, and study resources could also indirectly influence educational intentions through subjective norms and a need for relatedness. The fsQCA results indicated that a single variable was unable to predict and explain educational intentions. A total of five ways of influencing educational intentions emerged from the group analysis. Based on the pre-service teachers’ propensity to demand learning resources and their competence, pre-service teachers were categorised into four types—basic development pathway, internally driven pathway, competence-driven pathway and resource-supported pathway—and recommendations were made according to the degree of reliance on resources of different types of pre-service teachers as a way of providing theoretical and data support for the sustainable development of the country.

Global learning loss in student achievement: First estimates using comparable reading scores

We estimate the global impact of COVID-19 on student reading using international achievement tests. We model the effect of school closures (full and partial) on achievement by predicting the deviation of the most recent results from a linear trend using data from all rounds of PIRLS. Scores declined an average of 33 percent of a standard deviation, equivalent to more than a year of schooling. Losses are larger for students in schools that faced relatively longer closures. While there are no differences by sex, lower-achieving students experienced larger losses. The educational loss may translate to a 0.68 percentage point reduction of GDP growth for a global loss of $66 trillion.

TEXTOCENTRICITY OF RUSSIAN CULTURE AND ITS REFLECTION IN THE LANGUAGE CONSCIOUSNESS OF THE YOUTH

The article is devoted to the problem of national and cultural self-identification and its criteria in the view of young people. The results of a survey of one and a half thousand respondents aged 15 to 21 — students of schools, institutions of secondary vocational education and higher educational institutions — were analyzed, who were asked to name the most cited and recognizable Russian films and cartoons. The results of the verification of the received data are characterized. It has been revealed that knowledge of mass Soviet (1960–1980s) and post-Soviet (1990s) culture plays an important role in the process of self-identification of a linguistic personality as a citizen of Russia. The criterion that makes it possible to identify “friends” in the context of a communicative situation is the knowledge of precedent phenomena — quotes and visual images from Soviet entertainment films and cartoons, as well as mass cinema of the post-Soviet period.

Prevalence and determinants of school bullying in Qatar: a cross-sectional study

BackgroundSchool bullying is a wide-spread phenomenon that manifests in various forms. It has both short-term and long-term devastating consequences on physical, mental and social wellbeing. The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, including Qatar, has a relatively high prevalence of school bullying. This research aims at identifying the prevalence of bullying, particularly unsafe environments were bullying takes place, and its attributes at schools in Qatar.MethodsIn a cross-sectional study, 980 students from 10 schools in Qatar completed an anonymous self-completion standardized questionnaire to assess the different aspects of bullying from school students’ point of view.ResultsThe prevalence of bullying victimization and perpetration was found to be 41.0% and 31.7% among school students in Qatar, respectively. Classroom (67.5%) and hallways (64.8%) were the most frequently indicated environments of bullying whereas library was the least indicated one (28.3%). Verbal bullying was the most used type of bullying by students. Overall, students in Qatar believe that bullying is considerably a significant issue at their schools, yet schools are safe place for them to be in. Gender, age, ethnicity, school grade and years living in Qatar showed significant differences among the students.ConclusionSchool bullying is a serious, yet a manageable global problem. Our findings re-demonstrated the alarming high prevalence of school bullying in Qatar, highlighted student related and school related factors which have implications for future multidimensional action and research and recommended measures to foster safety at school.

The Influences of Socioeconomic Status on Parental Educational Expectations: Mediating and Moderating Effects

Previous research found positive correlations among family socioeconomic status, parental educational expectations, and children’s academic performance. However, more research is needed to validate the mediation effects of teacher–parent communication on family socioeconomic status and parental educational expectations. Employing multilevel path analysis of SPSS, the present study aims to examine the mediating and moderating mechanisms between socioeconomic status and educational expectations by establishing a framework incorporating socioeconomic status, educational expectations, teacher–parent communication, and coronavirus anxiety. We create a large sample of K-12 school students’ parents from southeastern China (N = 4403). The findings show that socioeconomic status positively influences parental educational expectations, socioeconomic status influences educational expectations through teacher–parent communication and coronavirus anxiety moderates the effect of socioeconomic status on teacher–parent communication. This research highlights how teacher–parent communication reflects the relationship between socioeconomic status and educational expectations in Chinese families in the post-COVID-19 era. The practical implications of these findings for parents, teachers, and schools are discussed.

Cultivating Peace Values Among School Students

Peace has always been among humanity's highest values--for some, supreme. In today’s world, with growing levels of problems, challenges, conflicts, violence-there is an increasing sense of peacelessness among students. Today’s school students are experiencing the peace-crisis. Everyone will agree that the need for generating peace consciousness among the growing generation is vital. This is especially so in the contemporary world where violence is increasing vertically and horizontally. Mahatma Gandhi once stated, “If we are to reach real peace in this world then we shall have to begin with the children”. If we want our young people to be successful in the world they will inhibit, they will need more than the knowledge we can measure on traditional tests. They will need to be equipped with skills, attitudes and habits required for solving problems unimaginable today. Such individuals will have self- awareness, values of tolerance, compassion and competence to deal with crisis in a creative manner. In order to develop these attitudes, skills and competencies among students, the institutions of family and school have to make conscious efforts to promote peace related skills. This paper aims at an understanding of ways and means to incorporate peace feeling at all levels of schooling. It is also indicated that how peace can be implanted in the mind of sensitive child of twenty first century at the school. It has suggested few strategies for inculcating values of peace as a way of life in the classroom and in various extra-curricular activities of the school. Through the participatory activities they will be able to embody the basic concepts of peace with its values and skills. They can effectively implement these in their daily life situations. They would become the peace-builders of the nation and would help to create the more peaceful and beautiful world.

Young People and the Future: School Students' Concerns and Hopes for the Future after One Year of COVID-19 in Austria-Findings of a Mixed-Methods Pilot Study.

The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in enormous changes in everyday life and numerous burdens for adolescents. This pilot study focused on how young people look to the future in the face of these burdens. Responses to two open-ended questions on concerns and hopes for the future that were part of a larger online survey on the mental health of school students in Austria were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Subsequently, differences in the experiences of boys and girls, young people with and without a migration background and psychologically stressed and non-stressed young people were examined by applying a mixed-methods approach. Data collection took place from 3 February to 28 February 2021. From a total survey sample of 3052 adolescents aged 14-20, a representative sample according to gender and migration background (N = 500) was drawn. Qualitative content analysis revealed several areas of concern about the future, including school-related concerns, concerns about the further development of the pandemic and the associated restrictions, concerns related to a lack of locus of control, health-related concerns and concerns about social relationships. The analysis also indicated young people's greatest hopes for the future, such as hopes related to further pandemic development, hopes regarding major life goals, school, social relationships and health. Young people's experiences differ according to gender, migration background and the extent of psychological distress. This study contributes to research on the psychological well-being of adolescents during the pandemic and provides important insights into the subjective experience of young people. It aims to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the concerns and hopes for the future of young people in a time marked by various challenges. The results of the study should be used to develop ideas for measures, such as the expansion of school psychological services and low-threshold support services for students, such as school social work and counseling.

Analysis of cox proportional hazard model for dropout students in university: case study from SIMAD university

PurposeThe main purpose of this study is to evaluate the extent of dropout students and identify the relationship between risk factors of dropout and the survival time of students.Design/methodology/approachThe Kaplan–Meier estimator (KM), also known as the product-limit technique, is a nonparametric model function that is commonly used in estimating survival function events (Kaplan and Meier, 1958). The survival function's Kaplan–Meier estimators are used to estimate and graph survival probabilities as a function of time, as well as explanatory data analysis (EDA) for the survival data, including the median survival time, and compare for two or more of the survival events. In addition, Cox proportional hazards model is employed for modelling purpose.FindingsResults of the Kaplan–Meier curves show that male students have lower survival rates than female, researchers have found that there is a difference between the survival times of the student's school types, results show students from English-based schools are higher than Arabic-based schools as suggested by the survival curve. Similarly, there is a difference between the survival times of students aging equal or greater than 25 and students aging less than 25 and survival function estimates of dropout according to high school grade marks has huge difference. These results were confirmed using log rank test as age, school type and marks were statistically significantly different while gender is not statistically significant.Research limitations/implicationsThere is no study of this kind from the Somalia context about the student's dropout. Subsequent to the outbreak of civil war in 1988 and the collapse of the central government in 1991, all public social services in Somalia including education centers were severely disrupted.Originality/valueThe statistical methods discussed in the previous section will be applied on a real dataset obtained from different offices of the university; most of the data were extracted from faculty of economics office and admission and record office. The data set comprised of 70 students from SIMAD university, consists of full-time faculty of economics students who enrolled at the university in the academic year of 2017–2018 until two years of diploma, students either complete 24 months of diploma or leave the university and that is the event of interest.

Sosialisasi Filtrasi Air Sederhana Sebagai Upaya Meningkatkan Sadar Sanitasi di SDN Lemahkembar

Providing access to clean water and proper sanitation is important in ensuring good health and well-being for individuals and communities. SDN Weakkembar is an elementary school located in an area that does not yet have adequate access to clean water sources. Therefore, socialization about simple water filtration is an important step to increase sanitation awareness in this school. This socialization aims to explain the importance of clean water and good sanitation, as well as to introduce and socialize simple water filtration methods to students at SDN Lemahkembar. This simple water filtration method involves using inexpensive and readily available materials, such as sand, gravel, cotton wool, tissues, used bottles, and dacron to rid the water of impurities and contaminants. The socialization was carried out through a series of educational activities, including presentations, group discussions, and practical demonstrations on how to make and use a simple water filtration device. Apart from that, sanitation awareness campaigns were also carried out, which involved putting up posters, distributing brochures about the importance of personal and environmental hygiene. The results of this activity show that the socialization of simple water filtration has succeeded in increasing sanitation awareness at SDN Weakkembar. School students become more aware of the importance of using clean water and good sanitation to maintain their health. They are also skilled in building and using simple water filtration devices, which can help them gain access to safer, clean water. With this socialization, it is hoped that sanitation awareness at SDN Lemahkembar will continue to increase and become a habit that is maintained. This can have a positive impact on the health of students and school girls and encourage sustainable behavior changes related to sanitation in the surrounding community.

Distance Learning During COVID-19 Pandemic: A Comparison between Schools in Urban dan Rural Area in Bali

Covid-19 pandemic has posed significant challenges to the education system. Most schools with limited or no experience with online learning and schools with no prepared online learning sources will encounter some challenges. This research analyzes similarities and differences between the difficulties faced by teacher and students for schools in different locations. Schools in rural and urban area of Buleleng were chosen, 2 elementary school, 2 junior high school, and 2 senior high schools. Teacher and students in those schools were observed and interviewed related to their online learning implementation, their difficulties, as well as their ways to cope with the difficulties. In analyzing the qualitative data consists of three steps such as, data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing. The result shows that the difficulties faced were not so much different, between urban and rural school teachers and students. Most of them mention internet connection as the problem. However, their ways to cope with the difficulties are varied. Urban and rural teachers and students have their own way to solve their problems. These differences give insight in order to face difficulties in implementing online learning.

Upaya Meningkatkan Kemampuan Membaca Efektif melalui Metode Skimming dan Scanning pada Siswa Kelas VII SMP Negeri Panca Marga Kolimasang


 
 
 This thesis raises the issue of efforts to improve effective reading skills through skimming and scanning methods for class VII students of SMP Negeri Panca Marga Kolimasang. Reading has several types, including speed reading, silent reading, beautiful reading, language reading and literature reading. Reading speed is a skill that must be trained. Success in mastering and practicing speed reading depends on attitude, level of seriousness, and readiness to practice. However, at school students are not given the opportunity to read so that students are less proficient in speed reading techniques. This study aims to find out and describe whether the use of skimming and scanning methods can improve the effective reading ability of class VII students of SMP Negeri Panca Marga Kolimasang. This type of research is this research is classroom action research (PTK). The implementation of this research consisted of two cycles. each cycle through the stages of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. The method used is descriptive quantitative. The results of this study indicate that the average reading speed in the pre-cycle is 88 wpm with a total of 6 students who reach the very fast category. The results of students' reading speed after applying the skimming and scanning method in cycle I averaged 129 wpm with 16 students who achieved the very fast category, while in cycle II the average reading speed was 195 kpm with 27 students who achieved the very fast category. Thus it can be concluded that the skimming and scanning method can improve the effective reading skills of class VII students of SMP Negeri Panca Marga Kolimasang.
 
 

An embodied, analogical and disruptive approach of AI pedagogy in upper elementary education: An experimental study

AbstractWhile AI has become more prevalent in our society than ever, many young learners are found holding various naive, erroneous conceptions of AI due to the influence of their technology and media environments. To address this issue, this study seeks to propose a novel pedagogical solution to improve upper‐elementary school students' scientific understanding of AI. Following a theory‐informed design convention, we propose an embodied, analogical and disruptive (EAD) approach which is centred on a human–AI comparison through analogical teaching and embodied interaction. To evaluate the impact of this approach, a matched‐group experimental study with pre‐ and posttest interviews was conducted among 77 Grade 6 elementary students in China. The statistical analysis showed that the experimental group, learning via the EAD approach, significantly outperformed their counterparts receiving direct instruction in terms of student growth in understanding. Qualitative analyses revealed the strengths of the EAD approach in supporting student engagement, abstract thinking and system thinking, and its limitations in cognitive overload and communication issues. Patterns of student learning were identified, including their mental schemas and strategies. The EAD approach, as an evidence‐based, age‐appropriate pedagogical solution, demonstrates the value of embodied cognition and human–AI analogy in AI education in elementary education. Pedagogical design has long been a critical challenge in teaching AI in K‐12 schools. Human–AI analogies are often used to teach AI, but with obvious pitfalls to be fixed. The EAD approach can complement programming and other plugged activities in AI, and more broadly technology and engineering education.

MARKETING RESEARCH OF FACTORS OF FINANCIAL EDUCATION/LITERACY OF SCHOOL STUDENTS IN IMERETI REGION

School that gives general education has been the most significant intermediate link for the transfer of social experience, knowledge, skills and abilities from the older generation to the youth. On one hand, the school, as a public institution, is a kind of mirror of a social organism, on the other hand, the school is a powerful tool for forming the personal qualities of adults. From this point of view, the school is the basis for enforcing the state and social order, creating the conditions for the country's development. In the contemporary conditions, the issue of raising the level of financial education of the population in Georgia is acute, therefore the modern school also "includes" the problems/tasks of financial education. The purpose of the research was to describe the "portrait" of the contemporary teenager in the context of financial literacy. Research methods included: to the research problem, synthesis and analysis of different scientific approaches, questionnaire survey and statistical processing methods. As a result of the marketing research conducted by us, we managed to identify the qualitative characteristics of giving financial education to children in the family, substantiated the main components of the concept of "financial literacy" in the context of integrating various scientific approaches, and formulated the task as a questionnaire. Thus, School students’ awareness about finances was analyzed considering five main factors: financial skills, financial behavior, values, types of management of money, financial education and awareness. This research has been tremendously significant and crucial since it has given us the opportunity to find out the financial education and practice of financial behavior, that have been done spontaneously, in the process of adults’ socialization. Mental distress in relation to police reporting among adolescent victims of robbery. A population-based study in southern Sweden

•Robberies as well as mental distress have increased among adolescents in Sweden.•This study on school students in southern Sweden was population-based with a high response rate.•Half of the robbed adolescents abstained from police reporting.•Non-reporters had poorer mental health than victims who reported the robbery.•Non-reporters were also an overall more disadvantaged group.
