Personalized Healthcare Outcome Analysis of Cardiovascular Surgical Procedures

Problem definition: This study addresses three important questions concerning personalized healthcare: (1) Are outcome differences between hospitals heterogeneous across patients with different features? (2) If they are, how do the best quality hospitals identified using patient-centric information differ from those identified using population-average information? (3) How much will hospitals’ pay-for-performance reimbursements change if their performance is measured based on patient-centric information? Methodology/results: Using patient-level data from 35 hospitals for six cardiovascular surgeries in New York State, we identify patient groups that exhibit significant differences in outcomes with a recently developed instrumental variable tree approach. We find outcome differences between hospitals are heterogeneous not only across procedure types, but also along other dimensions such as patient age and comorbidities. For around 80% of patients, the best quality hospitals indicated by patient-centric information are different from those indicated as best according to population-average information. Managerial implications: We compare potential outcomes when patients are treated at the best quality hospitals based on the two types of information and find complications could be reduced by using patient-centric information instead of population-average information. We also use our model to illustrate how patient-centric information can enhance pay-for-performance programs offered by payers and guide hospitals in targeting quality-improvement efforts.History: This paper was a finalist in the 2017 MSOM Student Paper Competition.Supplemental Material: The online appendix is available at https://doi.org/10.1287/msom.2023.1227 .

To Travel or Not to Travel: The Hybrid Conference Era [President’s Message

This year it is nice to once again be writing the September message having just returned from the annual IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS) flagship conference, the IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium (IGARSS). IGARSS was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, at the Kuala Lumpur Conference Center, where we enjoyed a week of technical sessions held both in person and online as well as a full agenda of GRSS social events, the Student Paper Competition (SPC), the Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition, and a map design contest organized by the IGARSS Local Organizing Committee.

An axiomatic distance methodology for aggregating multimodal evaluations

This work introduces a multimodal data aggregation methodology featuring optimization models and algorithms for jointly aggregating heterogeneous ordinal and cardinal evaluation inputs into a consensus evaluation. Specifically, this work derives mathematical modeling components to enforce three types of logical couplings between the collective ordinal and cardinal evaluations: Rating and ranking preferences, numerical and ordinal estimates, and rating and approval preferences. The proposed methodology is based on axiomatic distances rooted in social choice theory. Moreover, it adequately deals with highly incomplete evaluations, tied values, and other complicating aspects of group decision-making contexts. We illustrate the practicality of the proposed methodology in a case study involving an academic student paper competition. The methodology’s advantages and computational aspects are further explored via synthetic instances sampled from distributions parametrized by ground truths and varying noise levels. These results show that multimodal aggregation effectively extracts a collective truth from noisy information sources and successfully captures the distinctive evaluation qualities of rating and ranking preference data.

Editorial introduction to the special issue: Supporting future scholarship on cybercrime

This editorial introduction will present an overview of the three papers published in this special issue of the International Journal of Cybersecurity Intelligence and Cybercrime. The winners of the student paper competition during the 2021 Whitehat Conference have prepared their papers for this special issue. Their research directs our attention to key issues regarding cybercrime that have often been overlooked in the literature ranging from North Korean cyberterrorism to the relationship between COVID-19 and cybercrime and to fear of online victimization.

ICPET 2021- The 3rd International Conference on Power and Energy Technology, which was held in Chengdu, China during March 26-29, 2021. The conference is co-sponsored by University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, and Sichuan Institute of Electronics, China, organized by Science and Engineering Institute. The theme of ICPET 2021 is bridging and connecting – across disciplines, practices, places and understandings. The most interesting things happen at edges and boundaries, and so the aim of the conference is to demonstrate and examine different approaches in innovative power and energy technology solutions. It features invited speakers as well as peer-reviewed paper presentations.Due to COVID-19, ICPET 2021 was held both online and onsite during March 26-29, 2021. On March 24, all the online attendee got online test for preparing online presentation. On March 26, all the onsite attendees collected their conference materials. Then it’s opening remarks and onsite keynote speeches in the morning on March 27 for onsite speehes and attendees. The conference invited Prof. Weihao Hu who is from UESTC, China to do the chair and host the keynote speeches. Then opening remarks was made by Prof Qi Huang who is from Chengdu University of Technology, China (Vice President of CDUT). The keynote speeches were full live broadcast online on ZOOM for online attendees. After that, ICPET 2021 got two onsite keynote speakers: Prof. Jinjun Liu who is an IEEE Fellow and from Xi’an Jiaotong University, China, Prof. Fujin Deng, Southeast University, China and one onsite invited speaker, Assoc. Prof. Chuan He, Southeast University, China. In the afternoon, there are online keynote speeches and onsite best student paper competition, and we also showed the online keynote speeches for oniste atendees. The conference invited three online keynote speakers, they are Prof. Atsuo Kawamura, who is an IEEE Fellow and from Yokohama National University, Japan, Prof. Nikos Hatziargyriou who is IEEE Fellow and from National Technical University of Athens, Greece, and Prof. Soteris Kalogirou who is an IEEE Fellow and from Cyprus University of Technology, Cyprus. After that, it’s two onsite best student paper competitions, every presenter has 20Mins for presentation. There are onsite and online best paper competition, and onsite and online oral presentation on Mar. 28 and 29.We would like to express our appreciation to all the attendees, organizers and reviewers’s supports and their hard works. Thanks to their supports, ICPET 2021 could be held successfully. Early career representative column: Young scientist and student paper activities at URSI GASS 2020

2020 was a challenging year, with COVID-19 measures across the globe posing severe restrictions on people moving around and meeting in person. This also affected our scientific community. Many organizers of scientific events had to cancel or postpone their events. Among them was URSI, which decided to postpone the URSI GASS 2020 to 2021, hoping that doing so would allow the URSI scientists to meet in person again or, at least, a significant fraction of them in the case of a hybrid event. As this decision was made after the submission deadline, not everything was or could be postponed by one year. In view of timeliness, all authors were given the opportunity to have their contribution included in the proceedings of the URSI GASS 2020. Young Scientist (YS) Awards were also granted, and the Student Paper Competition (SPC) was held, with the SPC finally conducted as a virtual event. In this ECR column, we feature two short reports on the YS Awards and the SPC. These reports were kindly provided by the Young Scientist Panel, consisting of Phil Wilkinson (Chair), Peter van Daele, Stefan J. Wijnholds, and Inge Lievens; and Sembiam R.
