Comparison of Virtual Simulations with Peers versus Actors as Standardized Patients on Virtual OSCE Scores

ObjectiveThis study's primary aim is to assess the use of different types of standardized patients (SPs) during formative simulation activities on summative objective structured clinical exams (OSCE) in a PharmD curriculum. MethodsRandomized-controlled study with first-year pharmacy students in a Pharmacist Patient Care Lab (PCL) course. Students were randomized into groups with either hired actors or their peers as SPs for virtual simulation activities. All students then completed a virtual teaching OSCE (TOSCE) and virtual OSCE. A mixed effects analysis was done to compare TOSCE and OSCE scores between the two groups. ResultsThere were no significant differences between the two groups in their TOSCE or OSCE scores for the analytical and global rubrics. ConclusionThis study demonstrates that peers may be as effective as having hired actors as SPs in preparing students for virtual skills exams.

Enhancing employability through hospital placements for Biomedical Science students

Collaboration between Universities and hospitals has provided the National Health Service (NHS) with many excellent Biomedical Scientists through the placement year scheme. Here, we document the number of students joining the placement scheme and the number and type of hospital departments offering student placements over a 10-year period.
 Prior to 2012, students were able to join fully-funded placements through the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE). Since then, there has been a fluctuation in numbers completing a placement year at the University of Essex, but the employability of these graduates remains consistently higher than our 3-year graduates. We demonstrate the positive impact of completing a placement year in an NHS hospital laboratory for students, and the contribution to university metrics in good degrees and graduate outcomes as well as the provision of much needed, qualified biomedical science staff to hospitals.

Industrial engineering laboratory is an important component in a high-level learning in industrial engineering study program. The university wants a correct and proper layout for the placement of various kinds of learning support tools and practicums in the laboratory for Industrial Engineering students. There are 3 laboratory rooms, namely the Manufacturing Industry Laboratory, the Service Industry Laboratory, and the Industrial Integration System Laboratory. The research focused on the placement of laboratory equipment within the limited space available. This study aims to determine the priority criteria and alternative placement of the best laboratory equipment. The method used is AHP-TOPSIS, the AHP method is used for weighting the assessment criteria, while the TOPSIS method is used to sort the location of various laboratory equipment. The researcher determined that there were 4 criteria, namely the dimensions of the tool, the level of danger, maintenance, and the mobility of the tool. The conclusion that can be drawn is that the AHP-TOPSIS method can be used as a decision-making framework in selecting the right place for laying various laboratory equipment. Placement of tools that have the criteria of tool dimensions with heavy mass and mobility of tools that are often moved are placed in the Manufacturing Industry Laboratory.AHP, TOPSIS, laboratory, decision making

PREVALENCE AND DETERMINANT FACTORS ASSOCIATED WITH SARS-COV-2 AMONG STUDENTS OF PRIVATE UNIVERSITIES IN RIVERS STATE

Background: Despite the upsurge of the disease across the states of the federation poor compliance with the guidelines has been reported in various states across the federation. This study is aimed at determining the prevalence, and factors associated with Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection among students in private universities in Rivers State. Method: The study was carried out using a descriptive cross-sectional design, with data collected using a structured, self-administered questionnaire, administered to students in a Private University in Rivers State. Results: Findings from this study showed that from the 431 students tested, 425(98.6%) were negative while 6(1.4%) were positive bringing the prevalence rate to 6(1.4%). The study also found that (90.3%) do non-use of face masks when a lecturer is not in class, (60.6%) inadequate provision for hand washing equipment, and sanitizers in the laboratories for students, (3.2%) reported overcrowding to be the factors associated with SARS-CoV-2 prevalence among students in private universities in Rivers State Conclusion: Conclusively, the prevalence of SARS CoV-2 among students in private University is low. This study findings have shown that private University students demonstrated poor preventive practices in some areas like,strict adherence to use of face masks, hand washing, use of hand sanitizers and overcrowd are very important among private university students in Rivers state.

Identifying esterase and lipase activity in proteins of unknown function.

Over 3800 structures in the Protein Data Bank (PDB) have unknown function. The Biochemistry Authentic Scientific Inquiry Lab (BASIL) curriculum uses authentic inquiry to teach students to use structural bioinformatics tools to compare these structures to known enzymes and predict a function. We have predicted esterase or lipase function for several structures after performing both global and local structure alignments to identify similar structures in the PDB as well as specific amino acids that may be active site motifs. This function was supported by sequence alignment data from BLAST and PFam. SwissDock was then used for ligand docking to determine ester and lipid substrates to use for testing activity. Students in the biochemistry lab next used standard wet-lab biochemistry techniques to express and purify the target enzymes and performed kinetic assays using p-nitrophenyl acetate to test for esterase activity. After completing the BASIL curriculum, students continued with independent research projects to develop assays to test for lipase function. We have focused our efforts on the protein structures with PDB IDs 2O14 and 4Q7Q, as they showed the most promise through initial enzymatic testing. Both proteins show significant esterase activity in hydrolyzing both p-nitrophenyl acetate and p-nitrophenyl butyrate. Additionally, both proteins are able to hydrolyze p-nitrophenyl dodecanoate when sodium deoxycholate is present in the buffer solution for solubility of the substrate. We have also incorporated the p-nitrophenyl dodecanoate in DMPC vesicles, and testing of substrate hydrolysis with these vesicles is underway. We have also tested pancreatic lipase under all these conditions as a positive control for the experiments. Students will be creating a Proteopedia page for each protein. Education is a concius effort to develop the potential of human resources (HR) through teaching activities. To be able to create conducive teaching and learning activities and be able to develop effective learning outcomes is the duty and obligation of the teacher as an education teacher. Therefore, teachers directly seek to influence, foster and develop students abilites to become intelligent and skilled human beings. In essence, practicum is a proof of theory, buht because students only refer to teory without any strengthening of uhnderstanding trough practicum, the understanding gained through practicum is usually more memorable and lasts longer, because students are direcly involved in practicum activities and can prove the theory given by the teacher themselves. Thus the Pyhsic Education laboratory Assistant Team intends to carry out an activity with the title Student Laboratory Work Application (AKLAM) at the Integrated Islamic Junior High School (SMPIT) Al- Fityan School Gowa – Kab Gowa, which is designed as a creative response to increasing wise values towards educational professionalism in learning situations. This activity was carried out for four days of implementation by helping the Head of the Laboratory and the Science Laboratory Manager to improve and complete administration related to the laboratory. And be able to increase students knowledge about global warning symptoms, physics practicum in primary schools, coordination of data collection for school practicums, and completion of school laboratory administration as well as improving the quality of practicum learning for the Phyhsics education laboratory assistant team at UIN Alauddin Makassar at the S-1 level to comply with national education standards, in order to improve the quality of education for students of Physics Education Faculty, Tarbiyah and Teacher Training at UIN Alauddin Makassar in the future.

Deep-sea biology in undergraduate classrooms: Open access data from remotely operated vehicles provide impactful research experiences

Opportunities for students to conduct research in courses increase feelings of belonging in science, retention in STEM majors, and sense of ownership in a student’s educational experience. However, many research fields are challenging to bring to students: for example, deep-sea biology often requires expensive expeditions, restricting participation and accessibility. Access to deep-sea systems has been expanded by programs such as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Ocean Exploration (NOAA Ocean Exploration), which uses telepresence to bring deep-sea exploration to a global audience. Here, we present one example of how remotely operated vehicles can engage students in original research. Students in an undergraduate Marine Biology lab at at the State University of New York at Geneseo investigated the relationship between substrate rugosity and biodiversity of cold-water coral communities and associate fauna. The study site in the Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument was explored by NOAA Ocean Exploration using NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer as part of the 2017 Mountains in the Deep Expedition, EX1705. Organism density was greater at higher rugosity levels, suggesting that complex substrates support higher abundances in deep-sea communities. This research experience enhanced student’s understanding of the scientific process, appreciation for deep-sea communities, and engagement in the course. Open access deep-sea data provide impactful opportunities for students to participate in original research, increasing the accessibility and reach of deep-sea science.

A computerized training platform for carrying out and testing experiments for electronics and electronic circuits labs for students of technical institutes

تم في هذا العمل تصميم واختبار منصة تدريبية حاسوبية لمحاكاة عدد من تجارب مختبر الالكترونيك ومختبر الدوائر الالكترونية الخاصة بطلبة المعاهد التقنية من أجل توفير بيئة للتدريب واعادة التدريب على تلك التجارب خارج المختبر في مواجهة مشكلة الزيادة في عدد طلبة الحصة المختبرية مقابل عدم توافر العدد الكافي من الاجهزة والمعدات التدريبية . وقد اشتملت المنصة على برنامج محاكاة جاهز من انتاج شركة National Instruments الامريكية تم توظيفه للاستخدام من قبل الطلبة على تنفيذ ربط عدد من دوائر التجارب المختبرية . وقد قامت الباحثة باعداد دليلين للطلبة لمساعدتهم في العمل على المنصة كرس أحدهما لتدريب الطالب على تشغيل برنامج المحاكاة وتنفيذ عدد من التمارين من اجل اكتساب المران عليه اما الدليل الاخر فقد شمل عرضا لـ (10) تجارب مختبرية تحاكي التجارب التي تتم في المختبرين المذكورين بالكامل سوى ان تنفيذها يتم من خلال المنصة التدريبية دون الحاجة الى اجهزة المختبر . جربت المنصة على (12) طالب وطالبة واستطلعت اراءهم بها فضلا عن عرض المنصة على خمس خبراء من التدريسيين في مجال الالكترونيات وتكنولوجيا التعليم . وتوصلت الباحثة نتيجة التقويم الى ان المنصة حققت درجة عاليه من الكفاءة والفاعلية في تدريب واعادة تدريب الطلبة على تنفيذ التجارب المختبرية والى ان برنامج المحاكاة قد افاد في توفير بيئة تدريبية مفيدة للطلبة .كما ان وجود المنصة الحاسوبية كان حافزا لدي الطلبة المفحوصين للتعلم الذاتي (خارج المختبر) لإعادة تنفيذ التجارب المختبرية من خلال محاكاتها بالحاسوب.

Development and implementation of innovative concepts for language-sensitive student laboratories

In the past decades, society in general has become strongly diverse. This change also affects schools. As a result, learning groups cannot be seen as homogeneous and taught in this way. One of the challenges is students' linguistic skills. Dealing with different linguistic competencies should not only be a focus of formal education in schools but supported by non-formal education such as student laboratories. Thus, there is a need for practical examples that are effective for teaching and learning of diverse groups of students and enables them to be an active part of the learning process. At the Ludwigsburg University of Education, learning settings for student laboratories that enable active participation for all students irrespective of their linguistic competencies are developed and implemented following the model of Participatory Action Research in three cycles. In a cyclical approach, language-sensitive and language-supportive learning materials are developed, implemented, and evaluated focusing on different chemical contents. Qualitative data are collected during the experimentation phase using a semi-structured observation sheet. In three phases, we evaluated semi-structured observations of eight learning groups of different grade levels and school types with a total of 163 students. The observations are analyzed using inductive qualitative content analysis. The results show an optimal composition of approved methods, tools, and activities as succesful examples. Furthermore, interdependence between different factors could be identified that have positive relations with active participation of all students.

Promoting Critical Thinking Through Argument Mapping: A Lab for Undergraduate Students

Aim/Purpose: In undergraduate training, helping students improve argumentative text comprehension (CoT) by identifying the elements of an argumentative text and critical thinking (CT) by reconstructing the meaning of the text and constructing their own reflections is relevant. Argumentative skills are essential on both the personal and professional levels. Background: In recent decades, concern has developed over undergraduates’ poor skills in reframing and articulating their thinking on a topic, which affects critical thinking and the ability to express unique perspectives. Customized interventions in higher education could develop argumentative abilities for professional and personal use. In this regard, argument maps (AM) could be a useful tool for the visualization of arguments. They provide logical relationships between statements to help understand the reasoning chain. Methodology: Hybrid presence-distance research was conducted over four days. A quasi-experiment with one group and three tests – S1, S2, and S3 – was conducted. Contribution: Our study aims to investigate and enrich the research landscape, especially in the Italian university context, regarding the use of AM to support text comprehension and the development of argumentative skills. Findings: Our preliminary descriptive analysis showed that AM improves students’ CoT and CT proficiency levels. These abilities improved from the beginning to the end of the experiment. Inferential analysis showed a beneficial pathway inflection on final learning improvement. Early encouraging results suggest that AMs can improve argumentation comprehension, production, and critical thinking in teaching and learning. Recommendations for Practitioners: The learner could better manage knowledge and understand different perspectives with AM usage rules. Recommendation for Researchers: It is essential to remember that critical thinking is a multifaceted and complex concept. This article examined it as a proxy variable for text comprehension and argumentation skills. The length of exposure to the method, contexts and instruments (analog or digital), and age/education of participants must be considered when doing AM research. Impact on Society: The method would improve awareness of shared ideas and make it easier to enrich and rethink one’s thoughts on the topic. Future Research: To study AM roles in diverse types of information, future research could incorporate quantitative and qualitative approaches. Cross-curricular learning for everyday life in digital and AI-driven environments, as well as text comprehension and critical thinking, could also be examined. Further research could cover other aspects of the topic of critical thinking.

The Physics Classroom in an Online 3D Virtual World: A Thai High School Teacher Needs Analysis

The study set out to examine the actual and desired needs of Thai high school physics teachers in the 2021 academic year from a sample of 44 teachers in Thailand’s northeastern Surin Province. Also, assessment was undertaken concerning each teacher’s ‘order of needs’ from the 41 items presented for evaluation to the teachers. Moreover, there were three main categories in the study’s assessments. These were the teachers’ opinions on the use of 3-dimension virtual learning (3DVL) teaching media in physics for, 1) a mechanics laboratory, 2) an electromagnetism laboratory, 3) and a wave, sound, and light laboratory. The questionnaire was examined by five experts with a confidence value of 0.97. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics including the mean and standard deviation. Moreover, a modified version of the priority needs index (PNIModified) was used to assess the ‘order of needs’ of each teacher in teaching a 3DVL. The results of the study revealed that physics teachers believed that the overall readiness in teaching and learning management of the three groups of physics laboratories were at a moderate level. The teachers also felt that the need for computer-assisted teaching materials and 3DVL science and physics laboratories for high school students was at a high level in all three categories. Concerning each teacher’s ‘order of needs,’ it was determined that the top five teaching needs were for the spectral studies of hot gases (1), followed by teaching parallax (2), the need to teach light interference patterns (3), the polarization of light (4) and then light diffraction and diffraction grating (5).

Looking for solutions: students’ use of infrared cameras in calorimetry labs

This study adds to the growing body of research on laboratory work. The study involves four pairs of students in a university introductory calorimetry lab of which two pairs, the IR-pairs (infrared camera-pairs), were given access to infrared cameras to use however they liked during their course lab work. Two other pairs, the T-pairs (thermometer-pairs), were not given access to infrared cameras during their course lab work. The IR-pairs were video recorded when they chose to use the IR cameras and the T-pairs were video-recorded during the corresponding sequences. Additionally, all pairs participated in a modified lab after their course lab, in which the pairs had access to IR cameras and were presented with the same phenomena although with equipment modified to better accommodate for the use of IR cameras (thin plastic cups were used instead of calorimeters). Students’ practice, communication and reasoning was studied to explore how the IR cameras affect students’ activity. The results show that the access to IR cameras led to a reasoning focused on a macroscopic level of chemistry knowledge, involving heat transfer to the surrounding and measurement errors, and that the lab practice of most of the students was continuous (rather than intermittent) when they had access to IR cameras. We conclude by arguing that the access to IR cameras affects students’ conceptual and epistemological framing of the lab, i.e. that the students perceive the lab activity differently when they get access to IR cameras (both in a conceptual and epistemological sense). As an implication for teaching, we suggest that giving students access to IR cameras in a chemistry lab may be a way to introduce flexibility in the degree of openness of the lab.

The article presents information about the organization of research activities of students in the natural science specialty of a pedagogical university on the basis of a student scientific laboratory of the faculty. In the course of the study, the principle of metasubjectivity of education is worked out; for this purpose, inter-departmental and inter-university relations are used in the implementation of the study. The synthesis of nanoparticles was chosen as the subject of research. The created laboratory setup and the procedure for obtaining nanoparticles in the process of low-temperature evaporative synthesis are described.

Imparting effective Teaching Learning Methods for teaching C programming course to First Year Non-IT Students

Nowadays, Computers are the dominant technology of the twenty-first century. Thus, programming and the development of software are fundamental activities in which many people across the globe are involved. As a result, programming courses are part of the curriculum. The course is introduced to all first-year IT and Non-IT students who have either no or less expertise in computer programming. The main purpose to select these techniques for non-IT students is to prepare them to work with IT specialists at their future jobs by instilling in them a constant knowledge of technical fundamentals. But as compared to IT students, learning of C programming becomes difficult for non-IT students due to this their passing rate is low. Students lose their interest in programming due to their having less computer programming knowledge which leads to a gap in technical competency require by the IT sector. Taking this into consideration activities like quizzes, debugging tests, and usage of a virtual lab for students were implemented. These activities enhanced students' way of thinking, problem-solving ability, programming, and debugging skills. The idea of using PBL teaching methods, Think-Pair- Share, and E-Learning may improve the effect of C language teaching, and promote the student’s learning initiative. The main focus of this study is to enlighten different teaching approaches and methodologies for first-year non-IT students. Pharmacy students’ conceptions of theory–practice relation in the analytical chemistry laboratory – a phenomenographic study

In the undergraduate student laboratory teaching, one of the most common goals is developing improved conceptual understanding linking theory and practice. This study presents a phenomenographic analysis of pharmacy students’ conceptions of the theory–practice relation in the laboratory. Through semi-structured interviews with pharmacy students about laboratory teaching and learning, we find that the students conceive the laboratory experience of the theory–practice relation in three qualitatively different ways. They perceive the laboratory experience as either (i) a visual representation of the theory, (ii) acting in a multimodal setting supporting theory, or (iii) as a complementary perspective in understanding theory. Furthermore, the conceptions were context-dependent and changed over time. We discuss how these three different perspectives may affect the students’ learning outcomes and suggest how teachers can accommodate the perspectives in their teaching.

SUGGESTIONS TO REDUCE RISK FACTORS AMONG THE HEALTH WORKERS IN AGRA CITY OF UTTAR PRADESH, INDIA

This study was carried out among the HCWs (both males and females) of 30 hospitals of Agra city, Uttar Pradesh, India. There were a variety of HCWs in the study group, including senior residents, junior residents, interns, undergraduate medical students, staff and student nurses, and staff and student laboratory technicians. The study was carried out with participation from 600 HCWs. In Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India, a city tertiary hospital conducted a hospital-based cross-sectional study. Data were collected using a predesigned schedule from 600 respondents (Doctors, nurses, laboratory technicians and staff). Therefore, this study was undertaken to study the awareness of standard occupational safety measures such as universal precautions and compliance in daily practice among paramedical workers. Healthcare professionals (HCP) face risks while providing preventive, curative, and rehabilitation services. Medical science advancements have increased safety to some extent, but contemporary technology has also made healthcare very complex and dangerous. This study was therefore conducted to find out how well-informed paramedical workers were about common workplace safety precautions like general safety measures and how often they followed them. There are numerous risks associated with medical care, including radiation exposure, violence, psychiatric disorders, patient stalking, and suicide. Due to patient handling and the rising number of obese patients, HCP are at a high risk for musculoskeletal disorders. Human immunodeficiency virus-related workload growth has resulted in greater difficulties. Many HCP are unaware of prevention strategies despite the possibility of exposure to hazards. Additionally, the system is not supportive, the prevention policies are unclear or difficult to access, or there is a problem with attitudes. So, HCP still experience problems, especially in developing nations. Health managers must make sure that healthcare is focused on assessing the risks faced by HCP, their causes, and doing everything they can to prevent them.

Investigating The Academic Experience of Science Education Students with Virtual Laboratory Classes: A Convergent Parallel Approach

Virtual laboratories are operative platforms utilised by science education students during the pandemic. The study was designed to determine the virtual laboratory experiences of science education students in terms of usability, quality of service, and sense of reality with an exploration of the contributing factors that affect their experiences. The outcomes were supported by John Dewey’s Social Constructivist Learning Theory, Dave Kolb’s Experiential Learning, and Edgar Dale’s Cone of Experience. This study used a convergent parallel design to understand the subject thoroughly. In the quantitative approach, 100 respondents met the inclusion through a purposive sampling technique. In the qualitative approach, six participants are purposely selected by the snowball sampling technique. Quantitative data in the study were analysed through statistical analysis of Frequency, Mean, Independent T-test, and ANOVA. Moreover, qualitative data were analysed using Thematic Analysis performed through Colaizzi’s Method. Quantitative and qualitative data were integrated using Joint Display Analysis. In quantitative key findings, virtual laboratories for science education students are helpful. The results also revealed that there is no significant difference in the level of assessment of science education students on their academic experience with virtual laboratories when grouped according to gender and year level. On the other hand, qualitative results revealed that science education students have eight contributing factors affecting their assessment of their academic experience with virtual laboratories. The results of this mixed method research design can be a basis for future researchers to undertake either pure qualitative or quantitative research design.
