DEVELOPING COMMUNICATIVE COMPETENCE OF STUDENTS AT ENGLISH LESSONS

In the article the importance of developing communicative competence of students at English lessons, as one of the backgrounds for forming an individual is considered. The recent studies of solving this issue, as one of the necessary conditions in learning a foreign language, are overviewed. In the article the notion “communicative competence” and its components are determined: grammatical competence, discourse competence, that is the ability to build sentences in discourse for the purpose of forming meaningful integrity from a set of utterances, sociolinguistic competence, which lies in understanding the right usage of language standards, that depend on a particular context and strategic competence, which determines language techniques, that are used when interlocutors have a communication gap as a result of imperfect language knowledge. These techniques include: correction, paraphrase, parable, repetition and pause. The article exercises, tasks for developing communicative competence worked out by its author. Special attention is paid to the brainstorming activities, as an example, the author gives spidergram “Teacher”. The developed approach allows to monitor communicative competence development of students and to fulfil additional methodological approaches for developing creative activities of students.

PRE-SERVICE SCIENCE TEACHERS’ KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS BACKLOG PERPETUATED BY EMERGENCY REMOTE TEACHING

The adoption of Emergency Remote Teaching (ERT) during the COVID-19 Pandemic brought a shift in how lecturers teach in higher education, posing a threat to the usual development of competencies in students. This study aimed to uncover the knowledge and skills backlogs experienced by pre-service teachers. The study is framed within various concepts that characterize an ideal science teacher. Using a qualitative case-study design, data were collected through interviews with nine pre-service teachers who were subjected to the ERT. Transcripts of the interviews were analyzed thematically using the established framework as a lens. The findings indicate that while the science pre-service teachers acquired some technological knowledge, there was a concurrent loss of sufficient content knowledge, a crucial prerequisite for the development of Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK). Additionally, the pre-service science teachers highlighted a lack of knowledge in practical work and the specific pedagogies essential for teaching science. Spanish Teachers’ Beliefs about Plurilingualism: A Case Study in a Monolingual Context

In Spain, the learning of foreign languages has become one of the most interesting educational challenges in recent decades. Regulatory changes have been proposed to align with the Council of Europe’s language policy, which aims to promote plurilingualism and pluriculturalism among European Union citizens. Although the development of plurilingual competence in students has become a key goal, there is little evidence regarding the beliefs of current teachers, especially in monolingual contexts, where multilingualism is mainly developed through instruction. This study involved 307 teachers who taught languages or subjects in a foreign language. The results reveal beliefs about the promotion of plurilingualism, the objectives of language learning, the importance of plurilingual competence, and its characterization that at times do not align with the European language policy and its approach to plurilingualism, though there is agreement on other issues. Among the variables analyzed, two variables—academic training and the number of languages known—were found to significantly influence the beliefs revealed.

Automated Competence Assessment Procedures in Entrepreneurship

This study endeavors to automate the assessment of competencies within the domain of entrepreneurship, specifically targeting the augmentation of entrepreneurial cognition and conduct within universities in German rural regions, like Lower Franconia. Employing methods, including literature analyses and expert interviews, we formulated and validated an entrepreneurship competence profile and accompanying self-assessment tool. The ensuing evaluative framework is poised for seamless integration into learning management systems, thereby facilitating intelligent competence monitoring within educational environments. Purpose: The aim of this thesis is to develop an automated competence assessment procedure in the field of entrepreneurship. This can be used in the university environment in the long term to promote and teach entrepreneurial thinking and behavior in order to sustainably improve the quality of learning outcomes and achieve targeted promotion of entrepreneurship. Methodology: Based on a relevant literature analysis, four guideline-based expert interviews were created and conducted. The results of the interviews were compiled and validated in a structured competence profile (entrepreneurship competence profile). Based on this competence catalog for entrepreneurs, an empirically valid self-test was created using standard psychometric questionnaire construction methods. Results: The entrepreneurship competence profile and a consequential empirically validated self-test for competence assessment were created. This test provides the basis for the long-term competence development of students and can further be embedded automatically into a learning management system (LMS) as part of intelligent competence monitoring, which allows for the recording of competencies for each student and the individual incorporation of gap closure into the curriculum. Originality/value: In previous research, there were no competence profiles or competence assessment procedures in the field of entrepreneurship that derived relevant competencies directly from actors within this environment. This work illustrates the development of a competence assessment procedure for entrepreneurs and shows which methods can be used to close prevailing research gaps in the field of intelligent competence monitoring.

The Role of Educational Transformation in the Digital Era in Improving Student Quality

<p><em>This study illustrates how educational transformation in the digital era plays a significant role in improving the quality of students. Through the utilization of various platforms and digital tools, education becomes more innovative and dynamic. Adaptive learning processes enable the development of skills in line with the needs of the modern job market. The aim of this research is to describe the role of educational transformation in the digital era in enhancing the quality of students. The research employs a qualitative approach with interview, observation, and documentation methods to obtain relevant data related to the research on the role of educational transformation in the digital era in improving the quality of students. The research is conducted in the Accounting Education Program at Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta with three lecturers and three students as informants. Data obtained from informants is further processed using the triangulation technique, involving different sources of data and methods. The steps of data analysis include merging, sampling, recording, data reduction, and drawing conclusions. The research findings indicate that the transformation provides significant opportunities to enrich students' learning experiences. However, challenges such as variations in technology understanding among lecturers and the need for the development of digital competencies in students must be addressed. Strong institutional support, including providing training for lecturers and adequate infrastructure on campus, is acknowledged as key to the successful implementation of these changes. This transformation not only contributes to the improvement of student quality but also encourages collective efforts in overcoming emerging obstacles.</em></p>

Методика використання проблемного навчання на лекційних заняттях з теоретичної механіки

The article substantiates the need for the implementation of creative engineering thinking in students of higher education when studying the discipline "Theoretical Mechanics". Examples of problematic issues and methods of solving them using the analysis of the proposed hypotheses are given.
 The purpose of the article is to justify the given method of using problem-based learning in lecture classes on theoretical mechanics using active learning methods.
 The main goal of higher education is the formation of competences in learners, which will allow them to constantly develop and adapt to modern requirements in the conditions of constant development of industry. The main emphasis is placed not only on the assimilation of knowledge, but also on its creative application, the ability to solve new tasks, analyze different options and achieve optimal results. Solving creative engineering problems in the style of a business game or a game session reveals and reveals creative skills and abilities, significantly increases the individual creative potential of most of the applicants and contributes to the formation of professional production skills. The work of students in such classes includes a number of actions aimed at deepening knowledge, consolidating it in practical situations and developing personal qualities, such as independence, creativity, responsibility, work planning, the ability to quickly adapt to changes and make adjustments in the work process. Active participation of students in this process is also important, which contributes to their intellectual growth and development.
 Problem-based learning is a method in education that actively involves students in finding, analyzing and solving real problems or situations that arise in the context of studying a specific topic or discipline. The main aspects of problem-based learning include:
 - active participation of students – in problem-based learning, students act as active participants in the educational process. They are aimed at independent study of the material, problem solving and joint discussion.
 - stimulation of critical thinking – promotes the development of critical thinking in students. They learn to analyze information, make hypotheses, solve problems and argue their opinions.
 - collaborative learning – where group projects or tasks are often used, which promotes the development of communication skills, cooperation and mutual assistance between students.
 - interdisciplinary approach – can cover different aspects from different disciplines, which allows students to consider the problem from different points of view and apply knowledge from different areas.
 - development of independence and initiative – this teaching method stimulates independence and initiative of students. They learn to independently find information, formulate questions and find their own ways to solve problems.
 - application of skills in real life – promotes the development of skills that can be applied in real life situations. It helps students understand how their knowledge can be useful in practical activities.
 These aspects allow problem-based learning to be an effective learning method that promotes deep learning of the material and development of key competencies in students.

Современное учебно-методическое обеспечение образовательного процесса на занятиях по иностранному языку в условиях цифровизации общества

Introduction: The article analyzes the problem associated with the emergence of digital tools in the digital era, which has led to the emergence of a new didactic tool for teachers to organize the educational process, which has improved the quality of teaching a foreign language. The purpose of the article is to assess the possibilities and ways to improve the educational process in the digital era with the help of modern educational and methodological support, including digital tools. Materials and methods of research: methods of comparison and analysis of teaching practice. The research materials were the results of a survey of foreign language teachers with experience in using digital technologies. Research results: the prospect of using modern educational and methodological support for the educational process in the era of digitalization of society is substantiated; The content of the concepts “digital educational environment”, “digital tools”, “digital technologies” and “digital educational resources” is revealed. As a result of the diagnosis, an increase in the level of development of communication skills in students was revealed on the basis of modern educational and methodological support. Discussion and conclusion: analysis of the results of the study showed a positive impact on the development of foreign language communicative competence in students. It is proposed to actively use digital tools that open wide access to high-quality educational digital content and bring the language training of future specialists in the field of intercultural contacts to a new level of quality.

Functional and semantic basis of the organisation of the process of foreign language communicative competence development of students

Relevance. By focusing on lexicalised grammatical material as a means of forming English-language communicative competence in non-linguistic specialisations educators can better prepare students to excel in their chosen professions by equipping them with the language knowledge for effective communication in their respective fields. Purpose. This study aims to demonstrate how functionally described grammatical units effectively shape speech and communicative competence in teaching "Professionally oriented foreign language" within "Tourism" and "Socio-Cultural Service" specialisations. The objective of the study is to check the mechanism of activation of frequency semantic units in the professional speech of future specialists in the field of tourism. Methodology. The paper uses such research methods as semantic analysis, statistical method, modelling, approbation, analysis of research subject based on the processing of educational texts. 15 2nd-year students of the specialisation "Tourism" and "Socio-cultural service" took part in the study. Results. The conducted research proves the necessity of organising a system of preliminary preparation of material with the selection of lexicalised material for developing English-language communicative competence. An algorithm and corresponding practices have been devised to expedite students' foreign language communicative competence development, ensuring proficient utilisation of acquired knowledge in their professional endeavors. The study delineates the constituent elements of foreign language communicative competency and aligns them with the overarching objectives of teaching within non-linguistic specialisations, encompassing linguistic, sociolinguistic, sociocultural, social, reflexive, pragmatic, and discursive components. Conclusions. Lexicalised grammatical material significantly influences the development of foreign language communicative competence in non-linguistic students specializing in "Tourism" and "Socio-cultural Service". Integrating intercultural competency into language acquisition is crucial, enhancing students' ability to navigate diverse cultural contexts effectively. The results of the study can be used in conducting English language classes of the discipline "Professionally oriented foreign language" in the specialisations "Tourism" and "Socio-cultural service". The development of social competence in students with General Learning Difficulties in early primary grades: The necessity of psychological support programmes in schools

AbstractStudents with General Learning Difficulties present low levels of social competence. In order to increase them, students participate in school psychological support programmes. There are no research data available in Greece regarding social competence in students with General Learning Difficulties in the first grades of elementary school. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the efficiency of an intervention programme, which focused on strengthening their social competence, in the first grades of primary school. The levels of social competence of the students were evaluated before and after the implementation of an 8‐month social empowerment programme, following a mixed‐methods approach with the use of semi‐structured interviews and observation in the school context. The participants were 21 students with General Learning Difficulties, 18 education professionals, whose classes the 21 students attended, together with the 21 parents of these students (one parent per student). The results showed that the social competence of the participants was low before and that it increased after their participation in the intervention programme. In addition, girls had higher social competence than boys both before and after their participation in the intervention programme. These results highlight the benefits of classroom intervention programmes for children with General Learning Difficulties.

Impact of Engagement in Campus Sustainability Activities to Competency Development: Change Agents’ Experiences and Perspectives

Universities today have increasingly introduced and integrated sustainability elements into their curriculum to nurture students into potential future leaders for sustainability. Although various types of pedagogies have been introduced for the development of sustainability competencies in students, not many studies have investigated engagement in campus sustainability activities as a pedagogical tool. In that respect, this paper attempts to bridge the gap by investigating the potential of engagement as a pedagogical tool and how it can help in developing sustainability competencies in students. The investigation was conducted at three local universities in Malaysia, where purposive sampling was employed for the selection of data. This sampling technique is capable of carefully selecting respondents that are relevant to this investigation given the number of students involved in campus sustainability activities is small in comparison to the total student population. In-depth interviews were conducted with 21 students who have been identified from the purposive sampling and considered as the most active and proactive volunteers in their respective campus sustainability activities. Respondents shared their experiences where ‘interpersonal competency’ was emphasised as the most developed and essential competency for them throughout their engagement. Another interesting finding is the importance of ‘passion’. Having a strong sense of enthusiasm for sustainability not only serves as a push factor that drives these students to put their efforts into achieving the objectives of the campus sustainability activities they are involved in but also acts as an important catalyst to the development of sustainability competencies as a whole.

프로젝트 기반 수업이 학생역량함양에 미치는 영향 분석

This study aimed to analyze the impact of PBL on the development of student competencies, and based on this, to suggest direction for academic service. A total of 397 responses from both pre-survey and post-survey were used for analysis. The analysis method involved conducting paired-sample t-tests between the pre and the post tests to assess the effectiveness of PBL, and the analysis was performed using the SPSS 23.0 statistical package. The research findings indicate that participation in PBL positively influences students' self-directed learning abilities. Also, the experience of participating in PBL has a positive impact on students' problem-solving skills. Lastly, the participation in PBL positively contributes to enhancing students' creativity convergence competencies. This study is significant in providing knowledge necessary for strengthening university student engagement and improving learner-centered curricula and academic services.

The experiences and perceptions of nurse educators of culturally and linguistically diverse nursing students' competence development – Qualitative study

BackgroundMany countries are becoming increasingly culturally and linguistically diverse due to globalisation and migration. The global shortage of nurses and the consequent migration of nursing professionals is leading to increasing cultural and linguistic diversity in health care and nursing education. Nurse educators play a significant role in supporting nursing students' competence and working life readiness. Research aimTo describe nurse educators' experiences and perceptions regarding competence and competence development of CALD nursing students. MethodsThe study was conducted using a descriptive qualitative approach utilising individual thematic interviews for data collection. A purposive sample consisting of 20 volunteer nurse educators from five higher education institutions was used for the purpose. Data was collected in semi-structured interviews based on a literature review of previous studies. The data were analysed using inductive content analysis. The COnsolidated criteria for REporting Qualitative research (COREQ) criteria were used in the reporting of this study. ResultsAccording to the content analysis, three main categories describing aspects related to the competence and competence development of CALD nursing students were identified: 1) educator's competence to support student's learning process and competence development, 2) development of supportive structures and safe learning environments, and 3) student-specific competence and competence development. The educators emphasised that setting clear goals, providing encouragement, having an open discussion, and student-centered approach to support their learning process and create a safe learning environment. ConclusionsSupporting the learning process of CALD nursing students and developing safe learning environments were considered essential for the development of competence. These areas must be supported by developing educators' pedagogical and cultural competence and providing sufficient resources for both students and educators. In addition, the curriculum must be designed to support these aspects.

The Effect of the Concrete Structure Design Course Based on Formative Assessment

Abstract The scientificity and rationality of the course assessment method, as a key factor determining whether the course objectives can be achieved, is closely related to the learning effectiveness and competence development of students. In the present study, an assessment method based on formative assessment and supplemented by summative assessment was implemented for the concrete structure design course, and a mechanism for tracking students’ learning status and providing timely feedback was constructed. We compared and analyzed students’ satisfaction, students’ overall assessment results, and students’ learning outcomes before and after the implementation of the proposed course assessment method. The result showed that there was a significant improvement in these three aspects after the implementation of the proposed course assessment method, which promoted student learning.

This scientific article explores the multifaceted development of linguistic competence in students, encompassing various aspects such as phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. The article also delves into the factors influencing linguistic competence, including environmental, genetic, and educational factors, while highlighting the importance of fostering linguistic competence in educational settings.

Pedagogical conditions for developing professionalism in future teachers-choreographers in the system of choreographic education

The article studies the complex of conditions ensuring the development of professionalism in future teachers in the system of choreographic education and describes these pedagogical conditions. We have identified the factors that determine the effectiveness of their implementation in the pedagogical process.In the current sociocultural paradigm, the relevance of the article is conditioned by such factors as: the need to improve the quality of choreographic education; the revisal of the whole system of professional training of dance teachers; the lack of a well-founded system of effective pedagogical conditions for the development of professional qualities in students-teachers-choreographers. The purpose of the article is to solve the identified problems in terms of scientific and theoretical substantiation of pedagogical conditions for the development of professionalism in future teachers-choreographers. The personality-oriented approach is chosen as the leading approach in the study of the problem. The results of the study present the proposed and substantiated pedagogical conditions that contribute to the development of professional competencies in students – future teachers-choreographers. The practical value of the results obtained is the possibility of introducing the developed pedagogical conditions into professional training of future choreographers.
