Research on the Impact of Digital Infrastructure on Urban Breakthrough Green Innovation: A Case Study of the Yangtze River Economic Belt in China

Breakthrough green innovation acts as a critical leverage point and a fundamental driver of the development of new productive forces. This study employs a sample of 108 cities along the Yangtze River Economic Belt from 2011 to 2021 to investigate the impact of digital infrastructure on urban breakthrough green innovation and its underlying mechanisms. The findings are as follows: (1) Digital infrastructure construction facilitates urban breakthrough green innovation, with a notably more substantial impact on strategic breakthrough green innovation. This result is validated through robustness and endogeneity tests. (2) Heterogeneity analysis indicates that the enhancement effect of digital infrastructure on breakthrough green innovation is more prominent in non-resource-based cities, cities with higher levels of marketisation, and those with weaker environmental regulations, with a particularly significant influence on substantive breakthrough green innovation. (3) Mechanism analysis reveals that upgrading industrial structures, optimising market resource allocation, and increasing public environmental awareness are critical mechanisms through which digital infrastructure strengthens urban breakthrough green innovation capacity. Additionally, as improvements occur in industrial structure, market resource allocation efficiency, and public environmental awareness, the impact of digital infrastructure on urban breakthrough green innovation capacity displays a nonlinear effect.

The role of the construction industry in the recovery of processing enterprises during the crisis

The article discusses the consequences of the crisis period for the work of processing enterprises in Ukraine. It is established that hostilities on the territory of our state and general instability lead to a decrease in production and force processing enterprises to cease their activities. Many enterprises are experiencing serious financial difficulties due to work restrictions, problems with the supply of raw materials, and the loss of industrial facilities. In the summer of 2022, the percentage of companies that closed or were in the process of ceasing operations was 46.8 %. A significant consequence of the war for the Ukrainian economy at the moment is the rapid changes in the territorial location and the change in the symmetry of the processing industry of Ukraine. The war also affected the sectoral structure of the processing industry, producing significant shifts and changes in the volume of products sold. The current political situation in Ukraine and the severance of business chains with the temporarily occupied territories require processing enterprises to search for new markets for products, sources of supply of raw materials, change logistics links, increase the production of raw materials and their own products. During the study, it was found that certain key aspects of the impact on the activities of processing enterprises were previously insufficiently studied. It is determined that the construction industry is of critical importance for the processing industry of the State during the crisis, which is designed to contribute to the recovery of this industry: to develop infrastructure, to build and modernize production facilities, which allows to introduce new technologies and optimize production processes, to improve the conditions of production itself, to build energy facilities to provide processing enterprises with stable and affordable energy supply, to apply modern construction technologies that will create environmentally friendly and energy-efficient production. For the restoration and development of the processing industry of Ukraine, taking into account the impact of the construction industry, we propose to apply the following measures: widespread implementation of the enterprise relocation program with the expansion of state support; the use of state programs for the reconstruction of property and lending, the development of international communications and the European vector for the recovery of the post-war industry based on the ESG concept and the principles of building back better, compliance with the principles of energy efficiency and energy saving, and the application of decarbonization measures. These tools are designed to provide stimulating processes in the processing industry to achieve and exceed the prewar level of the volume of competitive and high-quality products. The development of the construction industry plays an important role in the restoration of processing enterprises in Ukraine, so it is important to create favorable conditions for their cooperation, to develop comprehensive development strategies aimed at ensuring sustainable economic growth and support.

Implementing an adaptive reuse on industrial buildings: a proposal for transforming Erbil’s Silo in Kurdistan-Iraq into a hotel

Industrial buildings, serving as markers of cultural heritage, connect our cultural identity from the past through the present and into the future. Unfortunately, many of these buildings lose their identity when they are converted into another function. Through the case study analysis (the Silo of Erbil City), a qualitative method is employed to examine design strategies and spatial transformations in recent adaptive reuse projects of existing structures. Through the literature review, this research investigates the importance of adaptive reuse and heritage buildings, underscoring their historical and theoretical underpinnings, and subsequently examines contemporary approaches to architectural criteria towards habitation for existing structures in the public, creative, and cultural domains. The study findings identify common fundamental elements of industrial heritage adaptive reuse and innovative design strategies applied in recent adaptive reuse projects, highlighting the potential to transform neglected or vacant abandoned buildings into urban open spaces. The study uses a comprehensive methodology involving case study analyses and diverse data collection techniques. The case study properties are the structural systems, natural lighting, and the surrounding open spaces. As a result, a hotel with a multipurpose hall, and a museum dedicated to the history of the Silo have been proposed, aiming at conserving the valuable heritage in this industrial area as well as providing an alternative perspective for the adaptive reuse of industrial structures in Erbil city. Finally, the implications of the research for the economic and social dimensions of urban development lie in understanding and promoting sustainable preservation strategies. This work is considered the first step for future research in Iraq, specifically in Kurdistan Region. The research concludes that the Silo of Erbil is one of the successful examples of the process of reusing buildings. It also concludes that less intervention in reusing a building can protect the building identity.

Digital Economy, Marine Industrial Structure Upgrading, and the High-Quality Development of Marine Economy Based on the Static and Dynamic Spatial Durbin Model

Achieving marine sustainable development goals requires improving the quality of the marine economy. In this study, we constructed a multi-dimensional evaluation index system to quantify the high-quality development of the marine economy (HDME) and digital economy for China’s 11 coastal regions between 2012 and 2020, and systematically explored the mechanisms between the digital economy, marine industrial structure upgrading, and high-quality development of the marine economy. We further empirically analyzed the influence of the digital economy and marine industrial structure upgrading on the HDME by using the static and dynamic spatial Durbin model and threshold model. We found that the digital economy improved the HDME of local and neighboring regions, and the sub-dimensional indicators had a significant heterogeneous effect. The marine industrial structure upgrading only positively affected the quality of the marine economy in neighboring areas. Furthermore, the digital economy and marine industrial structure upgrading also had synergistic effects on improving the marine economy, which mainly depended on digital infrastructure and digital industrialization. There also existed digital infrastructure and digital industrialization thresholds within marine industrial structure upgrading, affecting the HDME. Our results provide new insights for the green and sustainable development of the marine industry and marine economy from a broader technical perspective in the digital age. Governments should recognize the spatial spillover and synergistic effects of the digital economy and marine industrial structure between different regions and implement policies considering their impacts to achieve the marine sustainable development goals.

From jobs to careers: drivers and barriers to career development in emerging labor markets

IntroductionThis study aims to reveal the intrinsic and extrinsic drivers of career development in emerging labor markets and to explore the impact of these drivers and barriers on career development. With the rapid transformation of global industrial structure, career development in emerging industries such as artificial intelligence, big data, new energy and e-commerce is gradually attracting attention.MethodsThis study utilizes a mixed research method of questionnaires and in-depth interviews. The research team distributed a total of 700 questionnaires to practitioners in China, the United States, Japan, Germany and India, and collected interview data from 20 industry practitioners. These data were analyzed from both quantitative and qualitative perspectives to analyze the drivers and barriers to career development, and structural equation modeling was used to analyze the relationship between career motivation, barriers, social networks, and career satisfaction.ResultsThe results indicate that career development motivation significantly and positively influences career satisfaction, while individuals with high career satisfaction perceive fewer career barriers. In addition, career barriers significantly influenced individuals’ perceptions of career discrimination. The study also found that social networks play an important supportive role in career development, and that extensive social networks increase career satisfaction. Individuals with high motivation were more resilient in the face of external barriers and were willing to retrain to improve their occupational skills.DiscussionTo promote career development in emerging industries, labor market policies should optimize and create fair and inclusive work environments for emerging industries. By eliminating gender, age, and racial discrimination and providing employee support programs, career development satisfaction and opportunities can be effectively enhanced.ConclusionRapid technological updates, high work pressure, and cross-cultural barriers in emerging industries are the main challenges to career development today. This study suggests that governments and enterprises should jointly provide flexible vocational training and support policies to help practitioners adapt to the rapidly changing occupational environment.

Prediction and Scenario Simulation of Carbon Emissions Peak of Resource-Based Urban Agglomeration with Industrial Clusters—Case of Hubaoe Urban Agglomeration Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, China

China has implemented a “dual-carbon” policy in response to the Paris Agreement’s global climate change objectives. Hohhot, Baotou, and Ordos (HBO-UA) is a resource-based urban agglomeration that is noteworthy for having significant heavy industry in China. Based on the extended STRIPAT model, which broadens the study indicators into six aspects—population, economics, technology, urbanization, industrial energy, and industrial structure—this paper develops a research framework of “Driving–Predicting–Simulating” for carbon emissions. According to the “one formula for one city” principle, driver models were constructed for Hohhot, Baotou, and Ordos, respectively. The following conclusions were drawn: (1) Population and urbanization are the dominant factors of carbon emissions in HBO-UA, following the economy and industrial energy. (2) Carbon emissions are multifactor-driven in Hohhot, double-factor-driven in Baotou, and single-factor-driven in Ordos. (3) Hohhot can achieve its carbon emissions peak under more efficient and lower policy costs, while Ordo is under great pressure to reduce carbon emissions. (4) We suggest multiple strategies to accomplish the “dual-carbon” goals for resource-based urban agglomeration with industrial clusters. These strategies include fostering diversified consumption by continuously enhancing urban functions, directing the transformation of the industrial structure, and fostering the growth of emerging industries.

Do public-private partnerships (PPPs) promote the sustainable development of infrastructure (SDI)? Evidence from China

PurposeTo address challenges such as inadequate funding and inefficiency in public infrastructure construction, PPPs have gained significant global traction. This study aims to comprehensively assess the impacts and mechanisms of PPPs on the SDI and to provide rational policy recommendations based on the findings.Design/methodology/approachWe collated a dataset from 30 Chinese provinces covering the years 2005–2020 as our research sample. The study’s hypotheses are tested using a double fixed-effects model, a chained mediated-effects model and a multidimensional heterogeneity analysis.FindingsOur findings indicate that PPPs have a facilitating effect on SDI in general. This boost usually lags behind policy implementation and is cyclical in the time dimension. In the spatial dimension, PPPs contribute significantly to SDI in the eastern and western regions, but not in the central region. From the perspective of the dynamics of economic, social and industrial development, PPPs in economically backward areas are difficult to promote SDI, promote it the most in economically medium regions and are slightly less in economically developed regions than in medium regions. This promotion effect has an inverted U-shaped relationship with social development and diminishes with industrial structure upgrading. Finally, due to the negative relationship between PPPs and social development and between social development and SDI, PPPs are shown to contribute to SDI and are identified as critical paths. However, PPPs suppress SDI by inhibiting economic and industrial development.Originality/valueThis study makes three novel contributions to the existing body of knowledge: (1) we innovatively introduce the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into the field of infrastructure research, offering fresh perspectives on SDI enhancement; (2) revealing the mechanisms by which PPPs affect SDI through the three dimensions of economic, social and industrial development enabling policymakers to better understand and optimize resource allocation and improve planning, design and management of PPP projects for sustainable infrastructure and (3) we assess the spatiotemporal variances of PPPs’ effects on SDI and the diversity across regions at different social, economic and industrial structures developmental stages, offering critical insights to global decision-makers to devise tailored policy measures.

Improving the Dynamics of an Electrical Drive Using a Modified Controller Structure Accompanied by Delayed Inputs

This paper presents the operation of a modified speed controller with a standard PI/PID structure that includes the preprocessing of the controller’s input signal, focusing on the past behavior of control errors. The modification involves adding a delay line, with the outputs of the individual line segments summed with a weighting method, as detailed in the paper. One of the significant advantages of this method is its use of a standard industrial controller structure, which makes it highly practical and easily implementable in existing systems. By relying on well-established control frameworks, this approach reduces the need for specialized hardware or complex modifications, allowing for smoother integration and lower implementation costs. The delay-based signal shaping shows excellent properties for the electric drive system powered by a hard-switching PWM converter. The set of weighted delays acts as a filter whose parameters are chosen using the quality function to test different configurations for optimal performance. When tested in a speed control system for a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor, the modifications improved the control quality index, indicating better performance and efficiency. Importantly, the system allows for reducing or eliminating the gain in the differentiating part of the controller, which decreases motor current chattering and noise. This paper includes an experimental verification of the proposed solution in a laboratory setting under semi-industrial conditions.

Do Fiscal Incentives Contribute to Pollution Control? Empirical Evidence from China

Given the growing concerns over environmental degradation and the demand for sustainable development, the Chinese government has implemented several fiscal incentive policies to enhance environmental governance. Taking the phased comprehensive demonstration cities of the Energy Saving and Emission Reduction Fiscal Policy (ESERFP) as an exogenous shock, this study uses a staggered difference-in-differences method to evaluate the impact of the fiscal incentive policy on pollution control using panel data from 268 prefecture-level cities in China from 2003 to 2017. The results indicate that the industrial pollutant emissions in the demonstration cities significantly decreased compared with those in the non-demonstration cities under the influence of the ESERFP. Specifically, industrial wastewater discharges in the demonstration cities decreased by 15.5% while industrial sulfur dioxide emissions decreased by 19.5%. Moreover, promoting industrial structure upgrades and green technology innovations are the main mechanisms of the ESERFP in reducing industrial pollution emissions. Furthermore, the emission-reduction effect of the ESERFP is more significant in areas with more fiscal resources, lower promotion incentives based on local economic performance, greater emphasis on environmental protection, and those with no old industrial bases. Further analysis shows that the positive effect of the ESERFP on pollution control in the demonstration cities remains relatively effective after the demonstration period ends, and the policy does not sacrifice economic dividends. Overall, this study explores the impact of fiscal incentive policies designed to achieve environmental improvements via pollution control, offering valuable fiscal policy insights for China and other developing economies seeking solutions to environmental pollution, including fiscal incentive policy formulation and implementation, fiscal incentives to support regional green transformations, improving the differentiation and precision of fiscal incentives and enhancing environmental performance assessment.

The Effect of Digital Economy on Rural Environmental Governance: Evidence from China

Exploring the inherent mechanisms by which the digital economy fosters rural environmental governance holds paramount importance for driving the sustainable development of rural regions and elevating the living standards of rural residents. Drawing upon theoretical frameworks and extensive literature reviews, we have devised comprehensive indicator systems for quantifying the development trajectory of the digital economy and the efficacy of rural environmental governance, employing the entropy method for measurement. Leveraging panel data that spans from 2011 to 2022, encompassing 31 provinces across China, we empirically delve into the influence of the digital economy on rural environmental governance, along with its underlying mechanisms, by employing a fixed effects model. The baseline regression results reveal that the development of the digital economy can significantly promote the improvement of rural environmental governance, even after considering potential endogeneity issues. Moreover, the test results of the mediation effect show that the digital economy can enhance the level of rural environmental governance by accelerating industrial structure optimization and improving green technology innovation. Furthermore, the test result of the regulatory effect implies that the urban–rural dual structure may inhibit the positive effect of the digital economy on rural environmental governance. Additionally, there exists regional disparities in which the digital economy influences rural environmental governance, with the eastern region exhibiting a more pronounced effect compared to other regions.

A longitudinal study of evolving polycentric pattern in Shanghai

In the context of technological progress and economic transition, the urban spatial structure has consistently undergone dynamic evolution. However, the trajectories of polycentric patterns display significant national and regional variations. It is crucial to examine the dynamic evolution of spatial structures within Chinese metropolitan areas amidst economic transitions. Focusing on the Shanghai Metropolitan Area (SMA), this study investigates the temporal dynamics of job distribution and employment centres and considers industry differentiation to understand the evolution of polycentric patterns. Additionally, spatial regression models are utilized to probe the intrinsic mechanisms through which adjustments in industrial structure influence spatial evolution. The findings indicate that both the service and manufacturing sectors have the potential to concentrate employment and form subcentres in the SMA. Nevertheless, within the economic transition context, the downtown area, dominated by the service sector, underwent specialized development, fostering continuous prosperity and the emergence of employment subcentres in the periphery. In contrast, employment centres in suburban areas, dominated by the manufacturing sector, experienced a declining trend. Consequently, the locations of employment clusters in the SMA shifted, concurrently reshaping the relationships between the main centre and subcentres and leading to a transformation from a weaker separated polycentric pattern to a stronger continuous polycentric pattern. This paper elucidates the underlying mechanisms through which industrial transition influences urban spatial structure, offering insights into the evolution of polycentric patterns in the postindustrial era from a local Chinese perspective.

"Guangzhou-Shenzhen" Urban Linkage and Cooperation Study

As important cities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, the development of Shenzhen and Guangzhou is of great significance for achieving resource complementarity and promoting industrial synergy in the region. Based on data from 2002 to 2022, this paper uses the Euclidean distance measurement algorithm to calculate the gravitational strength between the two cities, and assesses their competitive and complementary relationships through the geographical affinity strength. Combining these relationships, this paper analyzes the directions in which the two cities can achieve complementary development in the future three industries, and proposes suggestions for optimizing their industrial structures and improving government policies.

Synergistic Impacts of Carbon Emission Trading Policy and Innovative City Pilot Policy on Urban Land Green Use Efficiency in China

Reducing the conflict between economic expansion and environmental conservation requires green-based innovation policies. The synergistic impacts of these policies on promoting urban land green use efficiency (ULGUE) remain underexplored. Utilizing panel data from 285 prefecture-level cities in China (2006-2020), we apply the super-efficiency slacks-based measure (SBM) to calculate ULGUE. Employing the staggered difference-in-difference (SDID) model and mediation model, we investigate the synergistic effects of the Carbon Emissions Trading Policy (CETP) and the Innovative City Pilot Policy (ICPP), along with their influencing mechanisms on ULGUE. The results demonstrate that the average ULGUE keeps increasing from 2006 to 2020 and the simultaneous implementation of CETP and ICPP enhances ULGUE, with a more pronounced effect when CETP precedes ICPP. The concurrent implementation of dual policies boosts ULGUE by leveraging technological innovation and industrial structure as mediators. The magnitude of the mediating effect is as follows: green innovation > general innovation > rationalization of industrial structure > advancement of industrial structure. We also observe heterogeneous synergistic impacts of CETP and ICPP on ULGUE, with greater effectiveness in non-resource-based and large-scale cities. These results offer valuable insights for crafting effective policy combinations to advance sustainable development trajectories for China and other developing countries.

The impact of green finance on carbon productivity: The mediating effects of the quantity and quality of green innovation

While China's economy is developing rapidly, the problem of carbon emissions is indeed more prominent. The development of green finance is conducive to supporting environmental improvement and enhancing carbon productivity. Most of the existing literature examines the relationship between green innovation and carbon productivity from the perspectives of industrial structure, technological innovation, and economic growth. However, the mechanism by which green finance (GF) affects carbon productivity and whether there is heterogeneity remains unclear. Therefore, this study utilizes panel data from 277 cities from 2010 to 2020 and employs a mediation effect model to investigate the relationship between GF and carbon productivity. The results of the study found that GF has a positive U-shaped association with carbon productivity. The quantity and the quality of green innovation have a mediating effect on the above relationship. It may be due to the fact that GF promotes the green transformation and sustainable development of the economic structure by supporting green industry and technological innovation, which provides strong support to enhance carbon productivity. In non-resource cities, the impact of GF on carbon productivity is more obvious through improving the quality of green innovation, probably because non-resource cities have the advantages of a diversified industrial structure, stronger innovation capacity, and easier access to policy support and market mechanism support than resource cities. The quantity and the quality of green innovation in the eastern, central, and western regions all play a mediating role. The findings provide policymakers with recommendations for utilizing GF in a two-carbon environment to achieve sustainable low-carbon development.

The structure and dynamics of the auto parts industry: Product space and complexity perspectives

Economic structures are strong determinants of diversification, growth, innovation, inequality, and many other socio-economic outcomes; however, structural change's effect on specific industries remains unexplored. This study investigates Japan's automotive components industry, analyzing its productive structure (the auto parts product space) and structural change process. We develop exploratory and econometric analyses that unify the measures of product relatedness and complexity. The firm-level data analysis shows that specific structural properties in international and domestic economies also exist in the automobile industry. This fractal structure implies that common principles and regularities underlie the formation of productive structures, notwithstanding the economies’ size, maturity, and industrial scope differences. The exploratory and econometric analyses indicate that the events of a product's appearance are not random but are significantly contingent on the network topology of the product space. Furthermore, network topology significantly impacts the development of complex products with sophisticated capabilities.

Regional digital infrastructure and carbon neutrality: A technology–structure–efficiency perspective

The synergistic development of digital transformation and carbon neutrality is a key path to global sustainable development. This study utilized the Broadband China pilot policy and a multi-period Difference-in-Differences (DID) design to comprehensively evaluate the impact of digital infrastructure on carbon neutrality using panel data from 291 prefecture-level cities in China from 2008 to 2021. The results indicate that regional digital infrastructure contributed to carbon neutralization innovation, carbon-intensive industry innovation, and carbon-emission efficiency in the pilot areas. This held true after analyzing the results with propensity score matching, coarsened exact matching, robust estimators, and instrumental variable regression. Specifically, the results of the mediation effect model indicate that digital infrastructure promotes the process of carbon neutrality through several mechanisms, including promoting the rationalization of industrial structure, promoting digital economic development, and inducing innovation in digital technology. In addition, cities with better economic development, lower resource dependence, and weaker environmental constraints have a greater carbon neutrality dividend effect from regional digital infrastructure. These findings indicate a need to optimize policies to unleash the dividends of digital infrastructure in carbon neutrality, which can drive technological, structural, and efficiency changes through digital empowerment. In addition, cities with heterogeneous endowments need to develop targeted measures.

Can smart cities improve energy resilience? Evidence from 229 cities in China

Energy security is a crucial component of national economic stability and growth. Given current technological limitations, improving management strategies is essential for safeguarding energy resources. Digital technologies play a pivotal role in enhancing management efficiency, thus contributing to energy security. As a key element of modernization, smart cities leverage digital solutions to drive urban development and have the potential to catalyze an energy revolution. Nevertheless, the relationship between energy security and smart cities remains underexplored, creating gaps in policy-making and implementation. This study, leveraging the smart city pilot policies enacted in 2012, 2013, and 2015, utilizes a sample of 229 prefecture-level cities covering the period from 2010 to 2020. Employing the Propensity Score Matched Difference-in-Differences (PSM-DID) model, the research assesses smart city policies’ impact on energy resilience. The results show that smart city policies significantly enhance energy resilience through three separate pathways: optimizing resource allocation, upgrading industrial structure, and promoting technological progress. Notably, smart city polices have more beneficial effects on the city characterized by low fiscal expenditure, being populous, resource-based, having high human capital, and being located in eastern region. This study aids in the improvement and promotion of smart city policies, thereby enhancing energy resilience and achieving sustainable urban development.

How does green technology innovation affect urban carbon emissions? Evidence from Chinese cities

Green technology innovation is regarded as a key catalyst for sustainable urban development. This study mainly utilizes 278 Chinese cities data from the China Urban Statistical Yearbook, adopting ordinary least squares (OLS) and mediation effect model to investigate the dual impact and mechanism of green technology innovation on urban carbon emissions. Besides, spatial Durbin model (SDM) and threshold model are employed to examine spillover and non-linear impact. The results indicate that: (1) Green technology innovation can significantly mitigate carbon emission intensity, but cannot reduce carbon emissions. Thus, both carbon emission reduction effect and rebound effect coexist, and there is heterogeneity across different cities. (2) Green technology innovation has the potential to decrease carbon intensity through optimizing energy intensity, government participation and basic life cleanliness. (3) There is a spatial spillover effect concerning the emission reduction impact of green technology innovation. (4) The relationship between carbon emission intensity and green technology innovation exhibits a non-linear impact under varying levels of energy intensity, government participation, industrial structure rationalization, and environmental regulation. Building upon these findings, policy recommendations outlined in this study encompass the reinforcement of technological utilization, avoidance of excessive governmental intervention, and adoption of strategies for regional connectivity and differentiation.

Technological Change and Entrepreneurial Activities: Evidence from China

This study is among the first to examine the impacts of technological change on entrepreneurial activities. Using new registered enterprises data and industrial robot data from 2010 to 2018, we find that robot adoption is broadly negatively associated with regional entrepreneurial activities. However, our analysis reveals a more nuanced understanding, in which robot adoption boosts high-quality entrepreneurial activities in regions, specifically those in technology-based industries, but reduces low-quality entrepreneurial activities. We also find that a favorable labor allocation environment and sufficient labor resources, as well as abundant high-skilled labor resources, can mitigate the negative impact. Credit constraints and the upgrading of industrial structures are effective in mitigating the crowding-out effect. In cities with higher unemployment risks, the negative effect is attenuated. The extent of the negative effect varies depending on the prevailing macroeconomic conditions, and the hukou reform helps to mitigate the negative impact. In addition, robot adoption has a significant spatial spillover effect between adjacent cities. These findings shed light on the effects of industrial robot adoption on local entrepreneurial activities, as well as the role of technological change in fostering entrepreneurial activities. Our findings suggest that it is crucial to grasp the strategic opportunities embedded in technological change to spur entrepreneurship.

The smarter the cleaner: Evaluating the impact of artificial intelligence on haze pollution

This paper innovatively evaluates the level of artificial intelligence (AI) by counting AI firms and employs a two-way fixed-effects model to analyze the impact of AI on haze pollution (HP), using panel data of 264 Chinese cities from 2006 and 2021. It is found that AI is an effective means to reduce urban HP, and that for every 1 % increase in the number of urban AI firms, PM 2.5 is reduced by about 2.22 %. Regarding mechanisms, AI mainly reduces urban HP through two ways: stimulating technology innovation and promoting industrial structure upgrading. Heterogeneity tests show that the haze reduction effect of AI varies due to urban HP level, urban location and urban characteristics, and is more pronounced in cities with high HP, as well as in western cities, northern cities, cities of high administrative levels, and resource-based cities. Our findings provide new insights for policy makers to better utilize AI technology to reduce HP.
