Analyze the auspicious patterns in ancient signboards

Signboards are symbolic trade signs used by ancient Chinese shops to attract customers. With rich concrete forms and abstract allegorical elements as the carrier, it constitutes the market landscape with rich connotations in ancient China. Signs are also symbolic and use signifiers to convey certain information. There are a lot of auspicious patterns in the use of signs. These patterns are the main symbol in the sign, or a detailed decoration. Signboard design process references Chinese folk customs and has a strong emotional color included. Different design languages are also expressed through different pattern combinations. These auspicious patterns are representative of symbolic culture. Symbolic culture exists widely in Chinese culture, but it has not been fully appreciated and understood. Characteristics is very important for the sustainable development of contemporary design. These auspicious patterns are used in each detail of the signboard. From the symbolic point of view, the deep meaning behind the sign is not only to attract business customers to patronize. We acknowledge the form of pattern is so simple, it is used to convey humanity through the ages which included their value beliefs and the cultural codes that have been followed from ancient times. These auspicious patterns are the aesthetic pursuit of the people, signboards have rich cultural accumulation worth learning from us.

The discovery of rest-frame UV colour gradients and a diversity of dust morphologies in bright z ≃ 7 Lyman-break galaxies

ABSTRACT We present deep ALMA dust continuum observations for a sample of luminous (MUV < −22) star-forming galaxies at z ≃ 7. We detect five of the six sources in the far-infrared (FIR), providing key constraints on the obscured star formation rate (SFR) and the infrared-excess-β (IRX–β) relation without the need for stacking. Despite the galaxies showing blue rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) slopes (β ≃ −2) we find that 35–75 per cent of the total SFR is obscured. We find the IRX–β relation derived for these z ≃ 7 sources is consistent with that found for local starburst galaxies. Using our relatively high-resolution (FWHM $\simeq 0.7\, {\rm arcsec}$) observations we identify a diversity of dust morphologies in the sample. We find both compact emission that appears offset relative to the unobscured components and extended dust emission that is co-spatial with the rest-frame UV light. In the majority of the sources, we detect strong rest-frame UV colour gradients (with up to Δβ ≃ 0.7–1.4) as probed by the multiband UltraVISTA ground-based data. The observed redder colours are spatially correlated with the location of the FIR detection. Our results show that even in bright Lyman-break galaxies at z ≃ 7 the peak of the star formation is typically hosted by the fainter, redder, regions in the rest-frame UV, which have an obscured fraction of fobs ≥ 0.8. As well as demonstrating the importance of dust obscured star formation within the Epoch of Reionization, these observations provide an exciting taster of the rich spatially resolved data sets that will be obtained from JWST and high-resolution ALMA follow-up at these redshifts.

Graph Entropy Based on Strong Coloring of Uniform Hypergraphs

The classical graph entropy based on the vertex coloring proposed by Mowshowitz depends on a graph. In fact, a hypergraph, as a generalization of a graph, can express complex and high-order relations such that it is often used to model complex systems. Being different from the classical graph entropy, we extend this concept to a hypergraph. Then, we define the graph entropy based on the vertex strong coloring of a hypergraph. Moreover, some tightly upper and lower bounds of such graph entropies as well as the corresponding extremal hypergraphs are obtained.

Strong chromatic index of generalized Jahangir graphs and generalized Helm graphs

The strong edge coloring of a graph G is a proper edge coloring that assigns a different color to any two edges which are at most two edges apart. The minimum number of color classes that contribute to such a proper coloring is said to be the strong chromatic index of G. This paper defines the strong chromatic index for the generalized Jahangir graphs and the generalized Helm graphs.

Algorithms for Weighted Independent Transversals and Strong Colouring

An independent transversal (IT) in a graph with a given vertex partition is an independent set consisting of one vertex in each partition class. Several sufficient conditions are known for the existence of an IT in a given graph and vertex partition, which have been used over the years to solve many combinatorial problems. Some of these IT existence theorems have algorithmic proofs, but there remains a gap between the best existential bounds and the bounds obtainable by efficient algorithms. Recently, Graf and Haxell (2018) described a new (deterministic) algorithm that asymptotically closes this gap, but there are limitations on its applicability. In this article, we develop a randomized algorithm that is much more widely applicable, and demonstrate its use by giving efficient algorithms for two problems concerning the strong chromatic number of graphs.

Innate and learnt color preferences in the common green-eyed white butterfly (Leptophobia aripa): experimental evidence.

BackgroundLearning abilities help animals modify their behaviors based on experience and innate sensory biases to confront environmental unpredictability. In a food acquisition context, the ability to detect, learn, and switch is fundamental in a wide range of insect species facing the ever-changing availability of their floral rewards. Here, we used an experimental approach to address the innate color preferences and learning abilities of the common green-eyed white butterfly (Leptophobia aripa).MethodsIn Experiment 1, we conducted innate preference choice-tests to determine whether butterflies had a strong innate color preference and to evaluate whether color preferences differed depending on the array of colors offered. We faced naïve butterflies to artificial flowers of four colors (quadruple choice-test): yellow, pink, white, and red; their choices were assessed. In Experiment 2, we examined the ability of this butterfly species to associate colors with rewards while exploring if the spectral reflectance value of a flower color can slow or accelerate this behavioral response. Butterflies were first trained to be fed from artificial yellow flowers inserted in a feeder. These were later replaced by artificial flowers with a similar (blue) or very different (white) spectral reflectance range. Each preference test comprised a dual-choice test (yellow vs blue, yellow vs white).ResultsButterflies showed an innate strong preference for red flowers. Both the number of visits and the time spent probing these flowers were much greater than the pink, white, and yellow color flowers. Butterflies learn to associate colors with sugar rewards. They then learned the newly rewarded colors as quickly and proficiently as if the previously rewarded color was similar in spectral reflectance value; the opposite occurs if the newly rewarded color is very different than the previously rewarded color.ConclusionsOur findings suggest that common green-eyed white butterflies have good learning abilities. These capabilities may allow them to respond rapidly to different color stimulus.

Holstein Friesian dairy cattle edited for diluted coat color as a potential adaptation to climate change

BackgroundHigh-producing Holstein Friesian dairy cattle have a characteristic black and white coat, often with large proportions of black. Compared to a light coat color, black absorbs more solar radiation which is a contributing factor to heat stress in cattle. To better adapt dairy cattle to rapidly warming climates, we aimed to lighten their coat color by genome editing.ResultsUsing gRNA/Cas9-mediated editing, we introduced a three bp deletion in the pre-melanosomal protein 17 gene (PMEL) proposed as causative variant for the semi-dominant color dilution phenotype observed in Galloway and Highland cattle. Calves generated from cells with homozygous edits revealed a strong color dilution effect. Instead of the characteristic black and white markings of control calves generated from unedited cells, the edited calves displayed a novel grey and white coat pattern.ConclusionThis, for the first time, verified the causative nature of the PMEL mutation for diluting the black coat color in cattle. Although only one of the calves was healthy at birth and later succumbed to a naval infection, the study showed the feasibility of generating such edited animals with the possibility to dissect the effects of the introgressed edit and other interfering allelic variants that might exist in individual cattle and accurately determine the impact of only the three bp change.

Doubly heavy tetraquark resonant states

Spectrum of the doubly heavy tetraquarks, bbq¯q¯, is studied in a constituent quark model. Four-body problem is solved in a variational method where the real scaling technique is used to identify resonant states above the fall-apart decay thresholds. In addition to the two bound states that were reported in the previous study we have found several narrow resonant states above the BB⁎ and B⁎B⁎ thresholds. Their structures are studied and are interpreted by the quark dynamics. A narrow resonance with spin-parity JP=1+ is found to be a mixed state of a compact tetraquark and a B⁎B⁎ scattering state. This is driven by a strong color Coulombic attraction between the bb quarks. Negative-parity excited resonances with JP=0−, 1− and 2− form a triplet under the heavy-quark spin symmetry. It turns out that they share a similar structure to the λ-mode of a singly heavy baryon as a result of the strongly attractive correlation for the doubly heavy diquark.

The effect of different types of AOPs supported by hydrogen peroxide on the decolorization of methylene blue and viscose fibers dyeing wastewater.

Wastewater from the textile industry containing a high concentration of organic and inorganic chemicals has strong color and residual chemical oxygen demand (COD). Therefore, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are very good candidates to treat textile industry wastewater. In this study, we investigated the effect of different types of AOPs supported with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) for the treatment of viscose fibers dyeing wastewater. Fenton, photo-Fenton, and Fenton-supported subcritical water oxidation (FSWO) processes were chosen as AOPs to compare the treatment efficiency of viscose fibers dyeing wastewater. The effects of solution pH, Fe2+ concentration, and H2O2 concentration on the treatment of viscose fibers dyeing wastewater were tested. The maximum color and COD removal efficiency was obtained corresponding to pH 2.5 for all oxidation methods when methylene blue (MB) dye solution was used. However, the maximum efficiencies were obtained at pH 3.0 for real textile wastewater decolorization. The MB dye removal efficiency was increased to 97.22, 100, and 100% for Fenton, photo-Fenton, and FSWO processes, respectively, when the addition of H2O2 concentration was adjusted to 125 mg/L. However, the maximum color removal efficiencies of viscose fibers dyeing wastewater were obtained 56.94, 61.26, 64.11% for Fenton, photo-Fenton, FSWO processes, respectively. As a result, the FSWO showed maximum color removal efficiencies.

Temperature analysis of driver and optical behavior of LED lamps

This exploratory study was carried out with the objective to know the optical behavior of light-emitting diode (LED) lamps used and the temperature reached by electronic components that compose the driver (electronic circuit situated inside the body LED lamp) responsible to convert electrical alternating current from power line to direct current to operate the LED devices. Then, two different experiments were carried out with LED lamps. In the first experiment, 131 LED lamps used were chosen randomly and bought from household appliances store (bargain market product) presenting different nominal powers, 8, 10, 12 and 15 watts. All LED lamps were polarized at the power line at 127 V and revealed different optical behaviors, such as: not turn-on; flashing light (as strobe effect); flashing light (as strobe effect) with high intensity (more intense than normal); flashing light (as strobe effect) with low intensity (less intense than normal); fast turnon and turn-off only; and turn-on with low intensity of light (less intense than normal). The hypothesis for these behaviors can be attributed by three different behaviors: in lamps not turn-on, this failure can be attributed for dark spots that are created on the surface of LED device. In these lamps, all LED devices are electrically connected in serial. When a LED is inoperative, the electrical current is interrupted for all LED devices; damage to the electronic components caused by internal high temperature confined inside the lamp body during the operation causing electrical oscillations, as observed from different behaviors from flashing light, flashing light with high intensity, flashing light with low intensity and fast turn-on and turn-off only; swelling of the electrolytic capacitors causing low energy storage and varying the electrical current flow, the electrical current for other electronic components altered the normal optical behavior of the LED lamps. In the second experiment, the temperatures of electronic components located in driver were obtained out of body lamp revealing: from 33 (lowest temperature attributed to inductor) to 52.5ºC (highest temperature attributed to electrolytic capacitor). These temperature values represent the ideal or normal condition of operation for electronic components, but, when they are operating inside the lamp body, the found temperature values increased considerably. This characteristic can be better evidenced by strong color change (caused by accumulative temperature during the elapsed days used) on the printed circuit board used in the driver.

Some bioactive metabolites’ response to long-term water stress in red cabbage

Some biochemical compounds such as anthocyanins, phenolic compounds and antioxidants in plants are very beneficial for human health because they are known to strengthen the immune system. Many academic studies have focused on the effects of drought on the yield and morphological parameters of plants, however, studies that investigate how these biochemical compounds are affected are rare. There are no known studies, in particular, that quantify them in red cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata f. rubra) in response to long-term water stress.In this study three repetitions of four different irrigations were applied to red cabbage in order to understand the impacts of drought stress on some of the bioactive metabolites of the plant. The biochemical components of the harvested extracts from each repetition were analyzed in four parallel runs. Results showed that in line with increased water stress, the amount of anthocyanin, phenolic content and antioxidant ranged from 30.72 to 51.27 mg Cyn 3-glu/100 g, 175 to 315.7 mg GA/100 g FW and 256.02 to 327.00 mg trolox/100 g FW, respectively.Under the light of the findings, this study concludes that some biochemical components in red cabbage increase with severe water stress. This result showed that red-colored vegetables with high anthocyanin content such as the red cabbage can be a preferred crop in regions with dry climates or those regions that tend to get warmer due to climate change. In addition to its health benefits, red cabbage can be used for its strong coloring properties in cases of increased drought conditions.

Experimental investigation on the oxidation of printing ink wastewater under hydrothermal flames

Printing ink wastewater has a strong color and contains high salinity and high concentrations of complex organic compounds, posting a severe threat to the ecological environment and human health. In this work, supercritical water oxidation of printing ink wastewater is performed within a transpiring wall reactor (TWR) to avoid corrosion and salt plugging issues. The high concentration of organic matter in printing ink wastewater is used to form hydrothermal flames for enhanced degradation. Flame temperatures, gaseous and aqueous products characteristics, as well as the anti-corrosion and salt plugging performance of the reactor, are obtained. A remarkable temperature fluctuation due to the multi-component systems indicates the instability of hydrothermal flame. The salt recovery rate of 94.56% and the integrity of the porous tube inner wall indicate that TWR has a good performance in terms of anti-corrosion and salt plugging. Under typical conditions, the removal rates for chemical oxygen demand, total nitrogen, and color are 99.52%, 70.07%, and 97.89%, respectively. Alkanes, nitrogenous compounds, benzodiazepines, and heterocyclic compounds in the aqueous products, and CO, H2, NH3, and CH4 in the gaseous products are the main intermediate products of printing ink wastewater under hydrothermal flames. Ammonia nitrogen, as the main intermediate product, inhibits the complete oxidation of nitrogenous organic compounds. Additionally, higher KNO3 concentrations promote the complete oxidation of nitrogenous organic compounds, while higher NaOH concentrations can increase the pH value and slightly facilitate degradation. In addition, higher feed flow rates prevent deposition and adhesion of additives that occur at high concentrations.

Assessment of the effect of colored beverage on gastric returns after gastric tube replacement to enhance placement verification.

Verification of appropriate placement of newly replaced gastrostomy tubes is essential prior to use to avoid potentially serious adverse events. A lack of standardized guidance regarding effective and practical means to verify placement exists. Aspiration or drainage of gastric-like contents is one mean suggested to help determine placement, yet when returns are minimal, this becomes challenging. Oral ingestion or the instillation of a colored beverage prior to tube replacement was used in a midwestern healthcare clinical setting to enhance returns in both volume and color via the newly replaced gastrostomy tube. A retrospective review of this practice was conducted, which included 176 gastric tube replacements over 4 years. A significant increase in volume of returns via the newly replaced tube was noted (P < .001) and a strong correlation of color to the ingested or consumed beverage was found with 95% of returns reflecting color tinting of the beverage or in many cases, strong color change to that of the beverage color. Presented is a simple, cost-effective method that has shown to be clinically useful in assessing placement of newly replaced gastrostomy tubes that may be useful in other practices and settings.

Extraction of Dyes from Plant Sources and their application on Cotton and Wool using Mordants

Dyeing is an ancient art, which was practiced during the Bronze Age in Europe. Primitive dyeing techniques included sticking plants to fabric or rubbing crushed pigments into cloth. The methods became more sophisticated over time and techniques were developed using natural dyes from crushed fruits, berries and other plants, which were boiled into the fabric and gave light and water fastness [resistance]. The widely and commercially used synthetic dyes impart strong colors but causes carcinogenicity and inhibition of benthic photosynthesis. Hence, use of natural dyes have become an importance in today’s world. In this study, Natural dyes have been extracted from different plant sources namely, Beeta Vulgaris (Beetroot), Spinacia oleracea (Spinach), Ixora coccinea (Jungle Geranium), Brassica oleracea var. capitata f. rubra (Purple Cabbage), and Tagetes erecta (African Marigold) using mordants like FeSO4 and CuSO4 On Cotton and Wool. It was seen that Wool takes up the dye better than cotton because vegetable fibers like cotton take up less dye than animal fibers like wool and CuSO4 is a better mordant than FeSO4.

Bright green fluorescence from Tb3+ activated lithium zinc borate glasses for solid-state laser and w-LEDs applications

Lithium zinc borate glasses (LBZ) composed of Li2CO3-LiF-H3BO3-ZnO activated with distinct concentrations (0.1–1.0 mol%) of Tb3+ ions were synthesized and explored their structural and optical characteristics. The functional groups and non-crystalline behavior of glasses were validated from the RAMAN and X-ray diffraction analysis, respectively. The optical bandgap was found to be 3.203 eV for (0.5 mol%) Tb3+ contained glass. The excitation spectrum of the same glass discloses a sharp peak at 376 nm (7F6→5D3). Under 376 nm excitation, luminescence spectra of Tb3+ ions incorporated glasses displayed the prominent emission transitions noticed at 5D4 → 7F6–3 with a strong green luminescence centered at 543 nm (5D4 → 7F5). The optimized concentration of Tb3+ for efficient green color emitting display devices was found to be 0.5 mol%. Lifetime decay analysis was carried out which is well fitted in single exponential function and it was found to be 1.032 ms. CIE color coordinates were estimated for all the procured glasses from their emission spectra and they are reside in the strong green color zone. The obtained green color coordinate values of the optimized glass were closer to the SMPTE and EBU coordinates (0.290, 0.600) for the green illumination appreciably. CCT values of the optimized Tb3+ incorporated glass were lie in the cool green region with high color purity of 82%. From these strong green emission features of the studied glasses, 0.5 mol% Tb3+: LBZ glassy matrix could be suggested as a potential candidate for the application of green laser and display device applications.

Development of High-Protein Vegetable Creams by Using Single-Cell Ingredients from Some Microalgae Species.

The aim of this paper was to develop high-protein vegetable creams through the incorporation of microalgae. Single-cell ingredients from Arthrospira platensis (spirulina), Chlorella vulgaris, Tetraselmis chui, and Nannochloropsis oceanica were incorporated at two levels of addition (1.5% and 3.0%) to a standard vegetable cream (STD). Effects of incorporation were assessed in terms of physicochemical and rheological attributes as well as nutritional labeling facts. Creams formulated with 3% A. platensis, N. oceanica, or T. chui showed strong color differences (6 < ΔE < 12) compared to STD; creams formulated with 1.5% A. platensis, T. chui, or N. oceanica showed perceptible differences (3 < ΔE < 6); and those made with C. vulgaris at 1.5 and 3% exhibited small differences (ΔE < 2). Moisture content, water activity, pH, syneresis, and °Brix did not show significant changes. Adding microalgae increased Bostwick consistency and decreased the consistency coefficient (K) except in creams made with A. platensis, which showed comparable values to STD. Principal component analysis indicated that creams made with 1.5% C. vulgaris were the most similar to STD considering all evaluated parameters. Estimation of the nutritional labeling facts showed that the four formulations could be labeled as having “high protein content” following the present EU legislation.

Changes of color and antibacterial characteristics of knitted fabrics dyed with reactive dyes after treatment with a nanocomposition of silver and carboxymethyl starch

Changes in the color characteristics of knitted fabrics after bactericidal finishes were studied by the colorimetric method. Antibacterial activity was tested with regard to gram-negative bacterium E. coli and gram-positive bacterium S. aureus. The strongest color changes due to the presence of Ag NPs were observed on samples dyed with lighter shades, where the color difference was mainly caused by the change in lightness and brightness. After treatment with silver NPs, the colors in samples dyed with Navy K-EN and Black NN are deepened, that is, the color intensity increases many times and the reflection coefficient decreases. Due to this effect, darker color tones can be achieved using less dye. The dyed knitted fabrics modified with Ag-carboxymethyl starch (AgCMS) NPs exhibited excellent antibacterial properties regardless of the dye color used. The dyeing did not affect the antibacterial activity of fabrics modified with AgCMS nanocomposites. The research on the resistance of the dyed knitted fabrics treated with nanocomposite AgCMS solution to washing showed the preservation of a sufficiently high antimicrobial activity, slightly decreasing only after the 10th wash in a washing solution. This is proved by exceptional resistance to washing of knitted fabrics modified with AgCMS. The results of the research allow one to solve the problem of expanding the range of antibacterial products and special clothes by treating textile materials with silver and carboxymethyl starch NPs.

The complete chloroplast genome sequence of Zelkova sinica and phylogenetic implications in Rosales

Zelkova sinica is a popular landscape plant in China because of its wide adaptation, strong disease resistance, large crown and beautiful fall color. Here, we assembled the complete chloroplast (cp) genome of Z. sinica based on genome skimming data. The cp genome is 158,924 bp in length including two copies of inverted region (IR, 26,427 bp) separated by the large single copy (LSC, 87,318 bp) and small single copy (SSC, 18,752 bp) regions. It encodes 111 unique genes, containing 77 protein-coding genes, 30 tRNA genes, and 4 rRNA genes, with 18 duplicated genes in the IR regions. Phylogenetic analysis shows that Z. sinica is sister to Z. schneideriana in Ulmaceae family.

Bioinspired bowl-array enabled angle-independent and fast responsive photonic colors for environmental sensing

Bioinspired adaptive coloring strategies advance the investigation of responsive photonic crystal (PC) colors for environmental visual sensing, but are being encumbered by inherent strong angle-dependent structural colors of their highly ordered photonic microstructures. Herein, imitating hexagonal pit array on the elytral surface of a male beetle- Chlorophila obscuripennis and utilizing optically isotropic features of the unique concave axisymmetric geometry, biomimetic micro-sized bowl-array enabled angle-independent and flexible one-dimensional PC colors are first demonstrated based on transfer printing technique which is certified as a facile, energy efficient and universal nanofabrication strategy. The photonic films assembled by functional copolymers and inorganic oxides are successfully transferred onto bowls on the surface of polydimethylsiloxane, exhibiting flexible and brilliant pixel array-like non-iridescent colors. Even after being twisted and stretched, water-washing and rubbing, the nanomaterial-based photonic films on the bowls still show glossy and stable angle-independent colors, presenting powerful strengths for practical visual sensing. In practical terms, functional copolymers based PC films on the bowls are developed as humidity and organic solvents colorimetric sensors free of angles with desirable sensitivity, remarkable durability and repeatability. And integrating photonic multilayered films with different response features, multi-mode pattern displays are realized. The remarkable sensing and display applications reflect the high values of the novel bowls enabled angle-independent photonic color building strategy.
