The Evolutions and Large‐Scale Mechanisms of Summer Stratospheric Ozone Intrusion Across Global Hotspots

AbstractStratospheric ozone intrusions can have a significant impact on regional near‐surface ozone levels. Especially in summer, intrusions can contribute to extreme ozone events because of preexisting high ozone levels near the surface and cause serious health issues. Considering the increasing trend of surface ozone level, an understanding of stratospheric ozone intrusion is necessary. From a 19‐year Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model, version 6 simulation and a stratospheric origin ozone tracer, we identify the global hotspots of stratospheric intrusions based on extreme tracer concentrations near the surface: North America, Africa, the Mediterranean, and the Middle East. We investigate the common underlying large‐scale mechanisms of the stratospheric intrusions over the identified hotspots from the lower stratosphere to the lower troposphere. From the trajectory analysis, we find that the upper‐level jet drives isentropic mixing near the jet axis and initiates stratospheric ozone intrusion. Subsequently, climatological descent at the lower troposphere brings the ozone down to the surface, which explains the spatial preference of summertime stratospheric intrusion events.

Connecting an Offshore Dry Air Stratospheric Intrusion with the Outbreak of Soberanes Fire 2016

Abstract This study investigates the connection between the arrival of dry stratospheric air and the Soberanes Fire (2016). The Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory model (HYSPLIT) and Goddard Earth Observing System Forward Processing model (GEOS-FP) are used for back-trajectories and offshore deep stratospheric intrusion in conjunction with the ignition and outbreak of the fire. The back-trajectory analysis indicates that most air reaching the vertical column was critically dry, exhibiting relative humidity values below 10%. As the fire ignited, dry air arrived from due west at heights of 1–3 km about 24 h prior. During the overnight fire growth, dry air arrived from the northwest to north-northwest at heights of 3.5–5.5 km 48–72 h prior. The synoptic and GEOS-FP analyses demonstrate offshore mid-to-low stratospheric intrusion. On 21 July 2016, an enclosed upper-level low approached the California–Oregon border along the northwesterly subtropical jet stream hours before the fire outbreak. The GEOS-FP results of potential vorticity, specific humidity, and ozone along the back-trajectories to the west and northwest of the fire suggest a stratospheric intrusion event into the mid-to-low troposphere at the back-trajectory start points, and vertical velocity indicates sinking motion. The specific humidity analyzed at the arrival time shows the transport of the abnormally dry air to the Soberanes Fire. Results suggest a connection between dry stratospheric air transported to the Soberanes Fire at ignition and overnight accelerated growth, supported by a dark bank in satellite water vapor imagery. The prediction of low-level transport of dry stratospheric air to the coastal communities could help to predict the occurrence of wildfire outbreaks, or periods of accelerated fire growth.

High Spatial Resolution Ozone Profiles Retrieved from the First Chinese Ultraviolet–Visible Hyperspectral Satellite Instrument

Understanding the vertical distribution of ozone is crucial when assessing both its horizontal and vertical transport, as well as when analyzing the physical and chemical properties of the atmosphere. One of the most effective ways to obtain high spatial resolution ozone profiles is through satellite observations. The Environmental Trace Gases Monitoring Instrument (EMI) deployed on the Gaofen-5 satellite is the first Chinese ultraviolet–visible hyperspectral spectrometer. However, retrieving ozone profiles using backscattered radiance values measured by the EMI is challenging due to unavailable measurement errors and a low signal-to-noise ratio. The algorithm developed for the Tropospheric Monitoring Instrument did not allow us to retrieve 87% of the EMI pixels. Therefore, we developed an algorithm specific to the characteristics of the EMI. The fitting residuals are smaller than 0.3% in most regions. The retrieved ozone profiles were in good agreement with ozonesonde data, with maximum mean biases of 20% at five latitude bands. By applying EMI averaging kernels to the ozonesonde profiles, the integrated stratospheric column ozone and tropospheric column ozone also showed excellent agreement with ozonesonde data. The lower layers (0–7.5 km) of the EMI ozone profiles reflected the seasonal variation in surface ozone derived from the China National Environmental Monitoring Center (CNEMC). However, the upper layers (9.7–16.7 km) of the ozone profiles show different trends, with the ozone peak occurring at an altitude of 9.7–16.7 km in March, 2019. A stratospheric intrusion event in central China from August 11 to 15, 2019, is captured using the EMI ozone profiles, potential vorticity data, and relative humidity data. The increase in the CNEMC ozone concentration showed that downward transport enhanced surface ozone pollution.

Improved ozone simulation in East Asia via assimilating observations from the first geostationary air-quality monitoring satellite: Insights from an Observing System Simulation Experiment

The Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS) is the world's first air quality instrument in the geostationary (GEO) orbit to monitor trace gases and aerosols at an unprecedented spatial and temporal resolution over East Asia, shedding light on the gradually alarming ozone pollution contrary to declining precursor emissions in this region. Here we use synthetic GEMS ozone profiles through the Observing System Simulation Experiment (OSSE) for evaluating the benefit of GEMS hourly measurements on chemical data simulation based on a Kalman filter technique. Assimilating synthetic GEMS data improves surface ozone simulation as its root-mean-square error (RMSE) is reduced by 7.2–19.2% over major urban areas in East Asia, along with a more accurate (6.3–29.2%) capturing of high-ozone events. The assimilation also better represents ozone vertical distributions in the middle to upper troposphere and better captures stratospheric intrusion events, with an RMSE reduction of 18.2–49.2% between 200 and 300 hPa. Our OSSE study offers a valuable reference for future ozone simulations, especially when massive observations become available in the coming era of GEO satellites.

Satellite observation of stratospheric intrusions and ozone transport using CrIS on SNPP

The Single Field of View (SFOV) ozone (O3) profiles derived from the Cross-track Infrared Sounder (CrIS) onboard Suomi National Polar-Orbiting Partnership (SNPP), with a high horizontal resolution of approximately 14 km at nadir and good sensitivity to O3 in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (UTLS), provide a prominent opportunity to examine stratosphere to troposphere (STT) transport. A process-oriented analysis was performed to examine the fine-scale features of a stratospheric intrusion (SI) event on June 11–13, 2017 in the southwestern US using the CrIS SFOV products together with wind and potential velocity (PV) from models. It was found that the location and strength of O3 enhancement correlate well with the PV contours, and the intrusion depth can be characterized using the vertical cross-sections of O3 and relative humidity (RH). In addition, the capability to use total column ozone (TCO) to identify SI events was confirmed through analysis of TCO from CrIS SFOV and other satellite and reanalysis products. The ozone/PV ratio was derived using SFOV O3 and model PV, and the values, ranging from 23.2 to 35.8 ppbv PVU−1 (1 PV unit (PVU) = 10−6 km2 kg−1 s−1), are in the lower end of previous estimations. These results demonstrate the advantages of the SFOV products in monitoring the fine-scale ozone transport and thermodynamic structure of SI events, as well as their potential value for weather and climate study.

Detection of stratospheric intrusion events and their role in ozone enhancement at a mountain background site in sub-tropical East Asia

In this study, we investigated the influences of stratospheric intrusion (SI) on the tropospheric ozone (O3) at Lulin Atmospheric Background Station (LABS, 2862 m MSL), a representative high-altitude site in East Asia. Thresholds for surface O3, carbon monoxide (CO), and relative humidity (RH) were set to identify SI events at LABS. Accordingly, 3.0% of the observation period was impacted by SI leading to a net O3 enhancement of 14.6 ± 9.6 ppb at LABS. Factors influencing the two most common SI event types affecting LABS, i.e. tropopause folds (major) and tropical cyclones (minor), were discussed. We utilized ERA5 reanalysis products (meteorology and O3) to trace and analyze the pathway and mechanism of these SI types over sub-tropical East Asia. With a conceptual model, we illustrate two driving circulations for SI air at ∼200 hPa that affect subtropical East Asia. SI air generated due to Rossby wave breaks are transported equatorward and downward into the troposphere. The southern westerlies passing south of the Tibetan Plateau can further push the SI air eastward. A SI event in 2007 with a significant O3 enhancement of 43.4 ppb caused by typhoon Nari was detected and discussed to depict the second SI type.

Weekend‐Weekday Implications and the Impact of Wildfire Smoke on Ozone and Its Precursors at Boulder Reservoir, Colorado Between 2017 and 2019

AbstractThe Northern Front Range of Colorado regularly exceeds the ozone (O3) National Ambient Air Quality Standard. This region is unique because it is impacted by emissions from urban activities (i.e., traffic and light industry) as well as from oil and natural gas production. Here, we summarize three years of observations from a new O3 monitoring site at the western edge of the region, located at the Boulder Reservoir. There were 41 days at the Boulder Reservoir in 2017, 2018, and 2019 when the maximum daily 8‐hour average O3 mixing ratio (MDA8 O3) exceeded 70 ppbv. Of these 41 high O3 days, 40 occurred between May and September, two were influenced by stratospheric intrusion events, one was influenced by a local industrial fire, and 13 of the days were impacted by wildfire smoke. Within the smoke‐free subset of data, weekend‐weekday differences in O3 versus nitrogen oxides (NOx) during 2018 and 2019 suggest NOx‐limited O3 production. Enhanced nonmethane volatile organic compounds (NMVOC) to NOx ratios are also observed on weekend days and are driven by weekend reductions in NOx. An analysis of 13 NMVOCs on days that had MDA8 O3 > 70 ppb showed that NMVOC abundances and their relative source contributions are variable at this location. Finally, we compare smoke‐impacted with smoke‐free conditions. At a given temperature, smoke‐impacted days have higher expected O3 mixing ratios than smoke free‐days. On average, benzene, toluene, and hexane are also elevated during smoke‐impacted periods.

Year-round record of near-surface ozone and O3 enhancement events (OEEs) at Dome A, East Antarctica

Abstract. Dome A, the summit of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet, is an area challenging to access and is one of the harshest environments on Earth. Up until recently, long-term automated observations from Dome A (DA) were only possible with very low power instruments such as a basic meteorological station. To evaluate the characteristics of near-surface O3, continuous observations were carried out in 2016. Together with observations at the Amundsen–Scott Station (South Pole – SP) and Zhongshan Station (ZS, on the southeast coast of Prydz Bay), the seasonal and diurnal O3 variabilities were investigated. The results showed different patterns between coastal and inland Antarctic areas that were characterized by high concentrations in cold seasons and at night. The annual mean values at the three stations (DA, SP and ZS) were 29.2±7.5, 29.9±5.0 and 24.1±5.8 ppb, respectively. We investigated the effect of specific atmospheric processes on near-surface summer O3 variability, when O3 enhancement events (OEEs) are systematically observed at DA (average monthly frequency peaking at up to 64.5 % in December). As deduced by a statistical selection methodology, these O3 enhancement events (OEEs) are affected by significant interannual variability, both in their average O3 values and in their frequency. To explain part of this variability, we analyzed the OEEs as a function of specific atmospheric processes: (i) the role of synoptic-scale air mass transport over the Antarctic Plateau was explored using the Lagrangian back-trajectory analysis Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) method, and (ii) the occurrence of “deep” stratospheric intrusion events was investigated using the Lagrangian tool STEFLUX. The specific atmospheric processes, including synoptic-scale air mass transport, were analyzed by the HYSPLIT back-trajectory analysis and the potential source contribution function (PSCF) model. Short-range transport accounted for the O3 enhancement events (OEEs) during summer at DA, rather than efficient local production, which is consistent with previous studies of inland Antarctica. Moreover, the identification of recent (i.e., 4 d old) stratospheric-intrusion events by STEFLUX suggested that deep events only had a minor influence (up to 1.1 % of the period, in August) on deep events during the variability in near-surface summer O3 at DA. The deep events during the polar night were significantly higher than those during the polar day. A modeling study of the impact of stratospheric intrusion on ozone enhancement in the lower troposphere over the Hong Kong regions, China

Stratospheric intrusion is of great importance to transporting ozone (O3)-enriched air from stratosphere into the middle and lower troposphere. The Weather Research and Forecasting model coupled with Chemistry (WRF-Chem) was employed to simulate a typical stratospheric intrusion episode occurring on March 24, 2010 and examine the impact of stratospheric intrusion on the O3 enhancement in the lower troposphere. An upper boundary condition scheme was applied to the simulations to overcome the limitation of WRF-Chem in which O3 chemistry in the stratosphere is not included. The simulations were evaluated with various observational data including O3 sounding, surface O3, as well as the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) ERA-Interim reanalysis data. The WRF-Chem showed reasonable performance on simulating the meteorological processes that control the stratospheric intrusion. Several findings were identified from the detailed analyses of the modeling results. First, the subtropical high-level jet was responsible for this stratospheric intrusion event. When Hong Kong was located at the south side of the subtropical jet where subsidence was dominated, the O3-enriched air was transported from stratosphere to troposphere. Second, the stratospheric intrusion caused substantial enhancement of O3 with the maximum O3 concentration higher than 80.0 ppbv in the lower above the atmospheric boundary layer in the Hong Kong region. Finally, the process analyses (PA) method is performed to quantify the impact of stratosphere intrusion on the O3 enhancement in the lower troposphere. The PA result illustrates that a substantial increase in the lower troposphere O3 is highly associated with vertical transport from the upper troposphere. These results indicated important role of stratospheric intrusion on O3 enhancement events and more observations are advised to better constrain and quantify its effects.

Upgrade and automation of the JPL Table Mountain Facility tropospheric ozone lidar (TMTOL) for near-ground ozone profiling and satellite validation

Abstract. As part of international efforts to monitor air quality, several satellite missions such as the Tropospheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) were deployed and others, like Tropospheric Emissions: Monitoring Pollution (TEMPO), are planned for the near future. In support of the validation of these missions, major upgrades to the tropospheric ozone lidar located at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory Table Mountain Facility (TMF) were recently performed. These modifications include the full automation of the system, which now allows unattended measurements during frequent satellite overpasses, and a new receiver that extends the measurement capabilities of the system down to 100 m above surface. The automation led to the systematic operation of the lidar during daily TROPOMI overpasses, providing more than 139 reference profiles since January 2018. Ozone profiles retrieved using the new lidar receiver were compared to ozonesonde profiles obtained from a co-located tethered balloon. An agreement of about 5 % with the ozonesonde down to an altitude range of 100 m a.g.l. was observed. Furthermore, the stability of the receiver configuration was investigated. Comparisons between the lowest point retrieved by the lidar and a co-located surface ozone photometer showed no sign of drift over a 2-month test period and an agreement better than 10 %. Finally, measurements from a 24 h intensive measurement period during a stratospheric intrusion event showed good agreement with two free-flying ozonesondes. These comparisons revealed localized differences between sonde and lidar, possibly owing to the differing vertical resolutions (between 52 and 380 m for lidar and about 100 m for the sonde).

A Case Study of Stratospheric Ozone Transport to the Northern San Francisco Bay Area and Sacramento Valley during CABOTS 2016

AbstractThe California Baseline Ozone Transport Study (CABOTS) was a major air quality study that collected ozone measurements aloft between mid-May and mid-August of 2016. Aircraft measurements, ground-based lidar measurements, and balloon-borne ozonesondes collected precise upper-air ozone measurements across the central and Southern California valley. Utilizing daily ozonesonde data from Bodega Bay, California, and Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications, version 2 (MERRA-2), reanalysis data for 25 July to 14 August 2016, three stratospheric intrusion events are identified over Northern California influencing air masses above Bodega Bay and Sacramento simultaneously. Calculated percent daily changes in afternoon ozonesonde observations indicate increasing ozone concentrations from the point of likely stratospheric air injection with the arrival of higher potential vorticity, confirmed by ensemble back trajectories. An analysis of the onsite surface monitoring ozone data indicates ozone increases in the observations for dates of plausible low-level stratospheric air influence. Further, a comparison of Bodega Bay surface ozone observations and 14 Sacramento Valley nonattainment zone surface sites show that the surface ozone observed at the higher-elevation surface sites in the lower Sierra Nevada foothills were positively correlated with elevated ozone captured by the ozonesondes within the lowest 0.5–1 km. The strongest correlations observed (~0.61) were between elevated Bodega Bay ozonesonde data and the Placerville (~612 m) afternoon surface ozone data, an indication that these regions separated by 200 km would be influence by the same ozone source. A comparison of daily changes in afternoon ozone show that the two locales often experience similar daily ozone increases or decreases. While this study leads to a basic quantification of stratospheric influence on surface ozone in the Sacramento nonattainment zone, a future campaign that examines ozone and winds aloft at both locales is suggested to improve the quantification of stratospheric ozone.

An Assessment of Stratospheric Intrusions in Italian Mountain Regions Using STEFLUX

The Mediterranean basin is considered a global hot-spot region for climate change and air quality, especially concerning summer-time ozone (O3). Previous investigations indicated that the Mediterranean basin is a preferred region for stratosphere-to-troposphere exchange (STE) and deep stratospheric intrusion (SI) events. The Lagrangian tool STEFLUX, based on a STE climatology that uses the ERA Interim data, was hereby used to diagnose the occurrence of deep SI events in four mountain regions over the Italian peninsula, spanning from the Alpine region to the southern Apennines. By using near-surface O3 and relative humidity (RH) observations at three high-mountain observatories, we investigated the performance of STEFLUX in detecting deep SI events. Both experimental and STEFLUX detections agreed in describing the seasonal cycle of SI occurrence. Moreover, STEFLUX showed skills in detecting “long-lasting” SI events, especially in the Alps and in the northern Apennines. By using STEFLUX, we found positive tendencies in the SI occurrence during 1979–2017. However, in contrast to similar studies carried out in the Alpine region, the negative long-term (1996–2016) trend of O3 in the northern Apennines did not appear to be related to the SI’s variability.

Strong downdrafts preceding rapid tropopause ascent and their potential to identify cross-tropopause stratospheric intrusions

Abstract. The capability of measuring three-dimensional wind and tropopause structure with relatively high time and vertical resolution makes very-high-frequency (VHF) radars a potentially important tool for studying various processes of the atmosphere. However, at present several unanswered questions remain regarding the use of VHF radars to identify possible stratospheric intrusions. Here the potential detection of stratospheric intrusion events is discussed using the Beijing MST (mesosphere–stratosphere–troposphere) radar located at Xianghe (39.75∘ N, 116.96∘ E). During the passage of a cutoff low in late November 2014, a deep V-shaped tropopause structure and strong downdrafts (> 0.8 m s−1) immediately preceding the rapid tropopause ascent (> 0.2 km h−1) were observed. Within the height region of the downdrafts, the stability of the radar tropopause seems to be weakened. Analysis results from global reanalysis and the satellite data, as well as the trajectory model, have shown clear evidence of downward stratospheric intrusions (dry ozone-rich and depleted methane air) associated with the strong downdrafts. A total of 20 typical cases of such strong downdrafts, occurring during various synoptic processes in different seasons, have been presented, and 15 of them are exactly associated with some form of stratospheric intrusions. Four years (2012–2015) of such downdrafts are further discussed. The observations reveal that the strong downdrafts preceding the rapid tropopause ascent can be a valuable diagnostic for monitoring intrusion events, which helps us to gain a better understanding of stratospheric intrusions in VHF radar observations.

Analysis of multi-year near-surface ozone observations at the WMO/GAW “Concordia” station (75°06′S, 123°20′E, 3280 m a.s.l. – Antarctica)

This work focuses on the near-surface O3 variability over the eastern Antarctic Plateau. In particular, eight years (2006–2013) of continuous observations at the WMO/GAW contributing station “Concordia” (Dome C–DMC: 75°06′S, 123°20′E, 3280 m) are presented, in the framework of the Italian Antarctic Research Programme (PNRA). First, the characterization of seasonal and diurnal O3 variability at DMC is provided. Then, for the period of highest data coverage (2008–2013), we investigated the role of specific atmospheric processes in affecting near-surface summer O3 variability, when O3 enhancement events (OEEs) are systematically observed at DMC (average monthly frequency peaking up to 60% in December). As deduced by a statistical selection methodology, these OEEs are affected by a significant interannual variability, both in their average O3 values and in their frequency. To explain part of this variability, we analyzed OEEs as a function of specific atmospheric variables and processes: (i) total column of O3 (TCO) and UV-A irradiance, (ii) long-range transport of air masses over the Antarctic Plateau (by Lagrangian back-trajectory analysis – LAGRANTO), (iii) occurrence of “deep” stratospheric intrusion events (by using the Lagrangian tool STLEFLUX). The overall near-surface O3 variability at DMC is controlled by a day-to-day pattern, which strongly points towards a dominating influence of processes occurring at “synoptic” scales rather than “local” processes. Even if previous studies suggested an inverse relationship between OEEs and TCO, we found a slight tendency for the annual frequency of OEEs to be higher when TCO values are higher over DMC. The annual occurrence of OEEs at DMC seems related to the total time spent by air masses over the Antarctic plateau before their arrival to DMC, suggesting the accumulation of photochemically-produced O3 during the transport, rather than a more efficient local production. Moreover, the identification of recent (i.e., 4-day old) stratospheric intrusion events by STEFLUX suggested only a minor influence (up to 3% of the period, in November) of “deep” events on the variability of near-surface summer O3 at DMC.

Linkages of Subtropical Stratospheric Intraseasonal Intrusions with Indian Summer Monsoon Deficit Rainfall

The authors investigate the life cycle of a strong subtropical stratospheric intrusion event and propose a hypothesis through which it might reduce the intensity of the Indian summer monsoon (ISM) rainfall (ISMR) after the monsoon onset during June 2014. The diagnostic analysis of ERA-Interim data revealed that stratospheric intrusion occurs in the region of the subtropical westerly jet (SWJ) as a result of Rossby wave breaking (RWB). The RWB event is associated with eddy shedding. These eddies transport extratropical stratospheric mass and energy fluxes downward and southward to north India (NI). As a result, the intrusion spreads dry, cold, and ozone-rich air deep into the troposphere (~500 hPa) over the NI. It enhanced the static stability and weakens the north–south upper-tropospheric temperature gradient. The intrusion of cold and dry air persisted for the entire June, which might have inhibited northward propagation of ISM convection and could be responsible for prolonged hiatus in northward phase propagation of the ISM after onset. The relation between stratospheric intrusion events and ISMR from long-term data (1979–2007) is also investigated. The analysis shows that the stronger negative anomalies of rainfall are associated with stratospheric intrusions during break spells. Thus, the study reveals that stratospheric intrusion is an important factor that may influence ISMR deficit.

STEFLUX, a tool for investigating stratospheric intrusions: application to two WMO/GAW global stations

Abstract. Stratospheric intrusion (SI) events are a topic of ongoing research, especially because of their ability to change the oxidation capacity of the troposphere and their contribution to tropospheric ozone levels. In this work, a novel tool called STEFLUX (Stratosphere-to-Troposphere Exchange Flux) is presented, discussed, and used to provide a first long-term investigation of SI over two global hot-spot regions for climate change and air pollution: the southern Himalayas and the central Mediterranean Basin. The main purpose of STEFLUX is to obtain a fast-computing and reliable identification of the SI events occurring at a specific location and during a specified time window. It relies on a compiled stratosphere-to-troposphere exchange (STE) climatology, which makes use of the ERA-Interim reanalysis dataset from the ECMWF, as well as a refined version of a well-established Lagrangian methodology. STEFLUX results are compared to the SI observations (SIO) at two high-mountain WMO/GAW global stations in these climate hot spots, i.e., the Nepal Climate Observatory-Pyramid (NCO-P, 5079 m a.s.l.) and Mt. Cimone (2165 m a.s.l.), which are often affected by SI events. Compared to the observational datasets at the two specific measurement sites, STEFLUX is able to detect SI events on a regional scale. Furthermore, it has the advantage of retaining additional information concerning the pathway of stratospheric-affected air masses, such as the location of tropopause crossing and other meteorological parameters along the trajectories. However, STEFLUX neglects mixing and dilution that air masses undergo along their transport within the troposphere. Therefore, the regional-scale STEFLUX events cannot be expected to perfectly reproduce the point measurements at NCO-P and Mt. Cimone, which are also affected by small-scale (orographic) circulations. Still, the seasonal variability in SI events according to SIO and STEFLUX agrees fairly well. By exploiting the fact that the ERA-Interim reanalysis extends back to 1979, the long-term climatology of SI events at NCO-P and Mt. Cimone is also assessed in this work. The analysis of the 35-year record at both stations denies the existence of any significant trend in the SI frequency, except for winter seasons at NCO-P. Furthermore, for the first time, by using the STEFLUX outputs, we investigate the potential impact of specific climate factors (i.e. ENSO, QBO, and solar activity) on SI frequency variability over the Mediterranean Basin and the Himalayas.

Detection of deep stratospheric intrusions by cosmogenic 35S

The extent to which stratospheric intrusions on synoptic scales influence the tropospheric ozone (O3) levels remains poorly understood, because quantitative detection of stratospheric air has been challenging. Cosmogenic 35S mainly produced in the stratosphere has the potential to identify stratospheric air masses at ground level, but this approach has not yet been unambiguously shown. Here, we report unusually high 35S concentrations (7,390 atoms m-3; ∼16 times greater than annual average) in fine sulfate aerosols (aerodynamic diameter less than 0.95 µm) collected at a coastal site in southern California on May 3, 2014, when ground-level O3 mixing ratios at air quality monitoring stations across southern California (43 of 85) exceeded the recently revised US National Ambient Air Quality Standard (daily maximum 8-h average: 70 parts per billion by volume). The stratospheric origin of the significantly enhanced 35S level is supported by in situ measurements of air pollutants and meteorological variables, satellite observations, meteorological analysis, and box model calculations. The deep stratospheric intrusion event was driven by the coupling between midlatitude cyclones and Santa Ana winds, and it was responsible for the regional O3 pollution episode. These results provide direct field-based evidence that 35S is an additional sensitive and unambiguous tracer in detecting stratospheric air in the boundary layer and offer the potential for resolving the stratospheric influences on the tropospheric O3 level.

How stratospheric are deep stratospheric intrusions? LUAMI 2008

Abstract. A large-scale comparison of water-vapour vertical-sounding instruments took place over central Europe on 17 October 2008, during a rather homogeneous deep stratospheric intrusion event (LUAMI, Lindenberg Upper-Air Methods Intercomparison). The measurements were carried out at four observational sites: Payerne (Switzerland), Bilthoven (the Netherlands), Lindenberg (north-eastern Germany), and the Zugspitze mountain (Garmisch-Partenkichen, German Alps), and by an airborne water-vapour lidar system creating a transect of humidity profiles between all four stations. A high data quality was verified that strongly underlines the scientific findings. The intrusion layer was very dry with a minimum mixing ratios of 0 to 35 ppm on its lower west side, but did not drop below 120 ppm on the higher-lying east side (Lindenberg). The dryness hardens the findings of a preceding study (“Part 1”, Trickl et al., 2014) that, e.g., 73 % of deep intrusions reaching the German Alps and travelling 6 days or less exhibit minimum mixing ratios of 50 ppm and less. These low values reflect values found in the lowermost stratosphere and indicate very slow mixing with tropospheric air during the downward transport to the lower troposphere. The peak ozone values were around 70 ppb, confirming the idea that intrusion layers depart from the lowermost edge of the stratosphere. The data suggest an increase of ozone from the lower to the higher edge of the intrusion layer. This behaviour is also confirmed by stratospheric aerosol caught in the layer. Both observations are in agreement with the idea that sections of the vertical distributions of these constituents in the source region were transferred to central Europe without major change. LAGRANTO trajectory calculations demonstrated a rather shallow outflow from the stratosphere just above the dynamical tropopause, for the first time confirming the conclusions in “Part 1” from the Zugspitze CO observations. The trajectories qualitatively explain the temporal evolution of the intrusion layers above the four stations participating in the campaign.

Multistation intercomparison of column-averaged methane from NDACC and TCCON: impact of dynamical variability

Abstract. Dry-air column-averaged mole fractions of methane (XCH4) retrieved from ground-based solar Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) measurements provide valuable information for satellite validation, evaluation of chemical-transport models, and source-sink-inversions. In this context, Sussmann et al. (2013) have shown that midinfrared (MIR) soundings from the Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change (NDACC) can be combined with near-infrared (NIR) soundings from the Total Carbon Column Observing Network (TCCON) without the need to apply an overall intercalibration factor. However, in spite of efforts to reduce a priori impact, some residual seasonal biases were identified, and the reasons behind remained unclear. In extension to this previous work, which was based on multiannual quasi-coincident MIR and NIR measurements from the stations Garmisch (47.48° N, 11.06° E, 743 m a.s.l.) and Wollongong (34.41° S, 150.88° E, 30 m a.s.l.), we now investigate upgraded retrievals with longer temporal coverage and include three additional stations (Ny-Ålesund, 78.92° N, 11.93° E, 20 m a.s.l.; Karlsruhe, 49.08° N, 8.43° E, 110 m a.s.l.; Izaña, 28.31° N, 16.45° W, 2.370 m a.s.l.). Our intercomparison results (except for Ny-Ålesund) confirm that there is no overall bias between MIR and NIR XCH4 retrievals, and all MIR and NIR time series reveal a quasi-periodic seasonal bias for all stations, except for Izaña. We find that dynamical variability causes MIR–NIR differences of up to ~ 30 ppb (parts per billion) for Ny-Ålesund, ~ 20 ppb for Wollongong, ~ 18 ppb for Garmisch, and ~ 12 ppb for Karlsruhe. The mechanisms behind this variability are elaborated via two case studies, one dealing with stratospheric subsidence induced by the polar vortex at Ny-Ålesund and the other with a deep stratospheric intrusion event at Garmisch. Smoothing effects caused by the dynamical variability during these events are different for MIR and NIR retrievals depending on the altitude of the perturbation area. MIR retrievals appear to be more realistic in the case of stratospheric subsidence, while NIR retrievals are more accurate in the case of stratosphere–troposphere exchange (STE) in the upper troposphere/lower stratosphere (UTLS) region. About 35% of the FTIR measurement days at Garmisch are impacted by STE, and about 23% of the measurement days at Ny-Ålesund are influenced by polar vortex subsidence. The exclusion of data affected by these dynamical situations resulted in improved agreement of MIR and NIR seasonal cycles for Ny-Ålesund and Garmisch. We found that dynamical variability is a key factor in constraining the accuracy of MIR and NIR seasonal cycles. To mitigate this impact it is necessary to use more realistic a priori profiles that take these dynamical events into account (e.g., via improved models), and/or to improve the FTIR retrievals to achieve a more uniform sensitivity at all altitudes (possibly including profile retrievals for the TCCON data).

On the processes influencing the vertical distribution of ozone over the central Himalayas: Analysis of yearlong ozonesonde observations

First yearlong (2011) balloon-borne measurements of ozone vertical distribution (EN-SCI 2ZV7 ECC Ozonesonde) and meteorological parameters (iMet-1-RSB 403 MHz GPS Radiosonde) over Nainital (79.5°E, 29.4°N, 1958 m amsl) in the central Himalayas are presented. Lower tropospheric ozone shows a prominent seasonality with highest levels during spring (∼70–110 ppbv in May) and lowest levels during summer-monsoon (∼20–50 ppbv), which is consistent with the ground-based observations. The lower tropospheric ozone minimum coincides with highest values of relative humidity (80–100%) during the summer-monsoon. However, ozone mixing ratios in the middle-upper troposphere show less pronounced and different seasonality. Influences of subtropical jets are observed (wind speed: ∼40–80 m s−1) in the middle-upper troposphere, particularly during winter. A stratospheric intrusion event during winter is observed, which enhances the ozone levels by ∼180% in the middle-upper troposphere. A noticeable feature of secondary ozone peaks (∼140–250 ppbv) is observed in the middle troposphere (∼8–12 km), more frequently during spring. Ozone levels in 2–4 km altitude range are higher by 19.9 ± 4.6 ppbv during the springtime high fire activity period over the northern India. Moreover, the lower tropospheric ozone levels over Nainital during spring are found to be considerably (∼30 ppbv) higher than those over Ahmedabad in the western India. This ozone enhancement is attributed mainly to the regional pollution of the Indo-Gangetic Plain (IGP) supplemented with the northern Indian biomass burning. It is suggested that regional photochemistry and biomass burning processes play controlling role in the lower troposphere, while, the middle-upper tropospheric variations are driven by dynamical processes including advection and stratospheric intrusion.
