Healthy working in inclusive companies – a study protocol of the GAIN project

BackgroundThe research project GAIN (working healthy in inclusion companies) deals with the topics of health and work in inclusive companies. Due to a great need for research on (occupational) health (e.g. physical and mental health status) and workplace design in companies employing people with disabilities, this project pursues the primary goal of generating information for the development and implementation of health-preserving measures within the framework of occupational health and safety, and risk assessment, for employees with and without impairments in inclusive companies.MethodsWithin the framework of the project, the employees of three inclusive companies will be examined with the help of an interdisciplinary and triangulative approach. Using quantitative and qualitative methods, specific physical workloads and hazards will be investigated by means of baseline screening methods and measurement techniques, specifically among employees with physical disabilities and impairments. In the statistical analysis, descriptive methods will be used to record the current state, while inferential statistical methods will be used to evaluate health maintenance measures. Inferential statistics for continuous data with confidence intervals based on the statistical parametric mapping (SPM) method will also be performed. The significance level will be set at 5%. Qualitative methods will be used to analyse structures and working conditions within the companies, with particular attention to the specific construction of the relationship between work, health and disability.ConclusionsThe structures in inclusion companies must be specifically designed to support and promote the understanding of work and health in relation to the idea of one’s own body, its positioning in space and its performance. These characteristics are to be identified in the course of the project and bundled into best-practice recommendations. Furthermore, it is the aim of the research project to derive recommendations for action at its conclusion and to present further advice for the promotion of health in inclusive companies.

Statistical inference for dependence networks in topological data analysis.

Topological data analysis (TDA) provide tools that are becoming increasingly popular for analyzing multivariate time series data. One key aspect in analyzing multivariate time series is dependence between components. One application is on brain signal analysis. In particular, various dependence patterns in brain networks may be linked to specific tasks and cognitive processes. These dependence patterns may be altered by various neurological and cognitive impairments such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases, as well as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Because there is no ground-truth with known dependence patterns in real brain signals, testing new TDA methods on multivariate time series is still a challenge. Our goal here is to develop novel statistical inference procedures via simulations. Simulations are useful for generating some null distributions of a test statistic (for hypothesis testing), forming confidence regions, and for evaluating the performance of proposed TDA methods. To the best of our knowledge, there are no methods that simulate multivariate time series data with potentially complex user-specified connectivity patterns. In this paper we present a novel approach to simulate multivariate time series with specific number of cycles/holes in its dependence network. Furthermore, we also provide a procedure for generating higher dimensional topological features.

Problems in Starting Business in Mysore District: A Study on Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Women Entrepreneurs

Women entrepreneurs encounter numerous challenges throughout the entire process of establishing and managing their businesses, starting from the inception stage. Scheduled caste and scheduled tribe women entrepreneurs often face social and cultural barriers that can make it difficult to start and run a business. These barriers include prejudice, lack of support from family and community, and limited mobility. This study is an attempt to identify and analyse the problems faced by scheduled caste and scheduled tribe women entrepreneurs in the process of starting their business in Mysore district. This study is based on primary data from forty SC/ST women entrepreneurs based on convenience sampling method and their problems were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics method. It is concluded that the SC/ST women entrepreneurs are facing problems at a moderate level in starting their business in Mysore district.

The Effect of GeoGebra Software on Achievement and Engagement Among Secondary School Students

GeoGebra software has been identified as a potential aid in the teaching and learning process. This study aims to examine the impact of GeoGebra software on achievement and enjoyment in the context of the polygon topic. A non-equivalent group pretest-posttest design was utilized, and 60 students were randomly assigned to either the experimental or control group. The data collected was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical methods with the assistance of SPSS version 26. The findings revealed that the level of achievement and engagement among Form Two students in the study population was already high regarding the Polygon topic. However, the results demonstrated that students who received instruction utilizing GeoGebra software achieved even higher levels of achievement and engagement than those who experienced traditional teaching methods. As a result, integrating GeoGebra software into the classroom proved to be an effective tool for enhancing student achievement and engagement on the Polygon topic among Form Two students. Finally, we found a significant relationship between the experience of enjoyment and the academic performance of second-year students.

A Comparative Study to Evaluate the Effectiveness of Crushed Ice Pack Application and Sitz Bath on Episiotomy Pain and Wound Healing Among Postnatal Mothers

An episiotomy is an incision made in the perineum- the tissue between the vaginal opening and the anus during child birth. Pain at the episiotomy site is more distressing for the mother during postnatal period. An ice pack application or warm shallow bath (sitz bath) may increase comfort and promotes healing. The main aim of this present study was to compare the effect of Crushed ice pack application and Sitz bath on episiotomy pain and wound healing among postnatal mothers. A Matched group design was adopted in this study. By using Non probability purposive sampling technique 22 postnatal mothers with episiotomy were selected as samples at Ramakrishna Hospital, Coimbatore and 11mothers were assigned randomly to each group I and group II. Episiotomy pain was assessed by using Numerical Pain Intensity scale and Wound healing was assessed by using Davidson REEDA scale. Group I received crushed ice pack application and Group II received sitz bath. Intervention was given for 10 minutes twice a day for three consecutive days from first postnatal day. Data were analysed by using descriptive and inferential statistical methods. The statistical analysis revealed that the calculated mean scores of episiotomy pain in the group I and group II was1.72 and 2.9 respectively and the mean difference is 1.2 with the standard deviation of group I and group II was 0.64 and 0.53 respectively. The calculated ‘t’ value 11.3 was greater than the table value of 2.086 at 0.05 level of significance. The calculated mean scores of episiotomy wound healing in the group I and group II was 1.54 and 1.81 respectively and the mean difference is 0.27 with the standard deviation of group I and group II was 0.5 and 0.6 respectively. The calculated‘t’ value 2.6 was greater than the table value of 2.086 at 0.05 level of significance. Finally, the study concluded that the crushed ice pack application was more effective than sitz bath in reducing the level of episiotomy pain and promotes wound healing among postnatal mothers.

Distributed estimation and inference for spatial autoregression model with large scale networks

The rapid growth of online network platforms generates large-scale network data and it poses great challenges for statistical analysis using the spatial autoregression (SAR) model. In this work, we develop a novel distributed estimation and statistical inference framework for the SAR model on a distributed system. We first propose a distributed network least squares approximation (DNLSA) method. This enables us to obtain a one-step estimator by taking a weighted average of local estimators on each worker. Afterwards, a refined two-step estimation is designed to further reduce the estimation bias. For statistical inference, we utilize a random projection method to reduce the expensive communication cost. Theoretically, we show the consistency and asymptotic normality of both the one-step and two-step estimators. In addition, we provide theoretical guarantee of the distributed statistical inference procedure. The theoretical findings and computational advantages are validated by several numerical simulations implemented on the Spark system. Lastly, an experiment on the Yelp dataset further illustrates the usefulness of the proposed methodology.

Emotional intelligence as a predictor for academic achievement of children: Evidence from primary schools of southern Ethiopia

In education, understanding the determinants of learners' achievement is crucial. This study aimed to explore the correlation between emotional intelligence (EI) and academic achievement in primary schools. Using Goleman's Emotional Intelligence Assessment Scale adapted for local use, 444 primary school students were assessed via random sampling. Inferential statistical methods, especially multinomial logistic regression, were employed for data analysis. The research revealed that self-regulation, self-awareness, empathy, and motivation significantly influenced academic outcomes compared to high-achieving peerAdditionally, demographic factors played a pertinent role in students' performance. The study's implications highlight the necessity of interventions to nurture EI in students. Recommendations include revising educational policies to cultivate resilient learners, raising awareness among educators, parents, and implementing strategies to enhance children's EI, emphasizing self-regulation, self-awareness, empathy, and motivation. These findings underscore the importance of EI in academic achievement and provide valuable insights for educational practitioners and parents, emphasizing the need for targeted interventions to support children's holistic development.

Debiased inference for heterogeneous subpopulations in a high-dimensional logistic regression model

Due to the prevalence of complex data, data heterogeneity is often observed in contemporary scientific studies and various applications. Motivated by studies on cancer cell lines, we consider the analysis of heterogeneous subpopulations with binary responses and high-dimensional covariates. In many practical scenarios, it is common to use a single regression model for the entire data set. To do this effectively, it is critical to quantify the heterogeneity of the effect of covariates across subpopulations through appropriate statistical inference. However, the high dimensionality and discrete nature of the data can lead to challenges in inference. Therefore, we propose a novel statistical inference method for a high-dimensional logistic regression model that accounts for heterogeneous subpopulations. Our primary goal is to investigate heterogeneity across subpopulations by testing the equivalence of the effect of a covariate and the significance of the overall effects of a covariate. To achieve overall sparsity of the coefficients and their fusions across subpopulations, we employ a fused group Lasso penalization method. In addition, we develop a statistical inference method that incorporates bias correction of the proposed penalized method. To address computational issues due to the nonlinear log-likelihood and the fused Lasso penalty, we propose a computationally efficient and fast algorithm by adapting the ideas of the proximal gradient method and the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) to our settings. Furthermore, we develop non-asymptotic analyses for the proposed fused group Lasso and prove that the debiased test statistics admit chi-squared approximations even in the presence of high-dimensional variables. In simulations, the proposed test outperforms existing methods. The practical effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated by analyzing data from the Cancer Cell Line Encyclopedia (CCLE).

Subjective Well-Being and Self-Assessed Health of Adolescents: A Longitudinal Cohort Study.

The aim of this study was to investigate the stability and predictors of subjective well-being and self-perceived health in adolescents over a two-year period, focusing on the importance of mental health in overall well-being. Participants in this longitudinal cohort study were surveyed at the ages of 15 (n = 441) and 17 (n = 354) through questionnaires. The data were analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistical methods. Hierarchical regression was employed to investigate significant predictors of subjective well-being. The subjective well-being and self-perceived health dimensions showed a consistent level of stability throughout the two-year period of secondary education. Additionally, there was a significant correlation between well-being at the beginning and end of this education period. Furthermore, self-perceived health dimensions, particularly general health, vitality, and mental health, were positively associated with well-being at the end of secondary education, highlighting their role in overall subjective well-being. The regression analysis revealed that self-perceived health factors, notably "General health" and "Mental health", significantly predicted overall subjective well-being, enhancing the model's explanatory power beyond gender and economic status. Nevertheless, baseline subjective well-being has the strongest predictive effect on final well-being. This study highlights the importance of psychological and health factors, particularly mental health, that affect the overall well-being of adolescents and emphasizes the need to focus on and improve these factors in order to improve subjective well-being.

A tale of duality: Community perceptions towards the ecotourism impacts on Simien Mountains National Park, Ethiopia

This study aims to analyze how park households perceive the economic, socio-cultural, and environmental impacts of ecotourism in Simien Mountain National Park (SMNP), Ethiopia. We combined qualitative and quantitative techniques for data collection. A sequentially embedded mixed design that gives priority to quantitative data was used. We also employed a multistage sampling technique to select respondents from three districts or woreda, namely Debark, Janamora, and Beyeda woredas. Finally, 397 participants were involved in the study from a random selection of three villages from each district or woreda. Data were gathered using a survey questionnaire, interviews, and focus group discussions. Data were analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistical methods, including means, standard deviations, analysis of variance (ANOVA), and logistic regression models. The findings from a logistic regression analysis revealed that ecotourism participation had a significant relationship with gender (B ​= ​1.850, P ​= ​0.023), level of education (B ​= ​0.238, P ​= ​0.032), geographical location (B ​= ​0.420, P ​= ​0.041), and occupation (B ​= ​0.920, P ​= ​0.019). This investigation suggested that males and individuals with a higher educational background are more likely to possess optimistic perspectives concerning the impacts of ecotourism. Furthermore, individuals residing in districts relatively near ecotourism destinations, those engaged in tourism-related work, and younger participants were recognized as having optimistic viewpoints regarding the impacts of ecotourism. In conclusion, the study highlighted the need for collaborative efforts among stakeholders to maximize ecotourism's benefits and minimize negative effects in SMNP. To achieve this, it is recommended that the Ethiopian Wildlife Conservation Agency, the Ministry of Tourism, and local government should work together to develop sustainable tourism plans that enhance local livelihoods and park conditions. Efforts should focus on increasing the participation of women and individuals with lower education levels through training and resource provision.

Breakthrough infections and acceptance of COVID-19 vaccine boosters: A survey analysis.

This Short Communication explores the effect of COVID-19 breakthrough infections (defined as a COVID-19 diagnosis after vaccination) on the willingness of previously vaccinated individuals to receive ongoing vaccine boosters. Specifically, we examine unique effects for three different breakthrough infection experiences, including the participant themselves, a close member of their family, and a friend/coworker. A representative, web-based survey of 600 adults in the state of Florida was fielded in March/April of 2022. Among the respondents, 455 had been vaccinated against COVID-19. Their responses were analyzed for this study using both descriptive and inferential statistical methods. Individuals who have experienced a personal breakthrough infection are two times less likely to receive annual vaccine boosters, ceteris paribus. However, there is not a statistically significant relationship between vaccine acceptance and breakthrough infections among close family members or friends/coworkers. We also found a very strong relationship between vaccine decisions and confidence in public health guidance. Our findings show that confidence in public health guidelines is the most compelling determinant of vaccine acceptance, but breakthrough infections also have a significant impact on individual decision making when it comes to ongoing vaccination. Going forward, public health messaging should directly account for this correlation in order to effectively maintain vaccination levels. The COVID-19 pandemic marked a turning point in the development and deployment of mRNA vaccines. This study contributes to innovation in health communication research by examining how breakthrough infections in these vaccinated individuals impacts ongoing booster shot acceptance. The findings of this study contribute to the nascent and ongoing development of baseline research in this area.

Clinical Features and Disease Course of Cancer Patients Infected with Sars-Cov-2 During Anticancer Treatments

Abstract Cancer patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 during their active anticancer treatment represent a highly vulnerable population. We aimed this investigation to show clinical features and outcomes of the patients who had mild to moderate COVID-19 symptoms or were asymptomatic at the admission to the COVID Center. The retrospective study included 25 cancer patients confirmed with SARS-CoV-2 within seven days of their last anticancer treatment. Clinical data were collected from medical records and processed by methods of descriptive and inferential statistics. Patients' mean age was 68.1±10.4 years. More than 2/3 of the patients were with ECOG PS 0 and 1, and about 4/5 of patients were in III or IV cancer stage. The most frequently applied types of therapy were radiotherapy and combined radio/chemotherapy. Eleven (44.0%) patients had bilateral while 4 (16%) had unilateral pneumonia. The most frequent symptoms were fever (72%), fatigue (72%), dyspnea (32%), and cough (32%). 1/5 of the patients needed oxygen support. Mean neutrophil (2.6±1.2), lymphocyte (0.9±0.6) and platelets (200.1±88.1) number significantly increased from admission to discharge (p=0.004, p=0.005, p<0.001). Median CRP significantly decreased from 40.4 (6.2-96.2) at admission to 11.35 (3.75-27.65) at discharge (p=0.008). Twenty-four patients were cured, and one patient died. Naso-pharyngeal SARS-CoV-2 clearance time was 19.4±6.9 days; the minimum was seven, and the maximum was 39 days. Cancer patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 during active anticancer treatment can successfully overcome COVID-19 without developing further respiratory or other complications during hospitalization. An increase in lymphocyte and neutrophil counts, with a decrease in CRP, may be markers of a favorable prognosis.

Comprehensive dental care in pediatric patients with hematological diseases

Introduction: hematological disorders constitute one of the most interesting problems to be considered by the stomatologist in his daily practice. Objective: to characterize the comprehensive stomatological care in patients with hematological diseases at the Provincial Pediatric Teaching Hospital "Pepe Portilla" in the period from September 2020 to September 2021. Methods: An observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study was developed with the purpose of characterizing the comprehensive stomatological care in patients with hematological diseases at the "Pepe Portilla" Pediatric Provincial Teaching Hospital, from September 2020 to September 2021. The universe and the sample consisted of 21 patients, the sample was selected intentionally, according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The data were obtained from the clinical history of the patients. Descriptive and inferential statistical methods were used to describe the variables. Results: patients aged between 7 and 12 years had a greater presence with 52,38 %. There was a greater presence of white patients with 42,86 %, with a greater predominance of the female sex. Conservative treatment was the most needed in 52,34 % of these patients. The use of pharmacological prophylaxis in 47,62 % of the cases, of which 28,57 % were destined to surgical type treatment. Conclusions: Most of the patients examined presented poor oral hygiene. Pharmacological prophylaxis was the most used method prior to stomatological treatment. Supportive physiotherapy, analgesia and antimicrobial therapy were part of the treatment for all postsurgical complications.

Online health information seeking behavior of Croatian urological patients and liability for the violation of an individual’s right to health by disinformation

The aim of this paper was to explore online health information seeking behavior. The method used in this study was conducting a survey by means of a questionnaire which was distributed to the urological patients of the “Dr. Juraj Navro” National Memorial Hospital in Vukovar in Croatia. The results were analysed by the SPSS statistical package utilising descriptive and inferential statistical methods (Chi-square, Mann Whitney U test). Regarding the online information sources that urological patients consult, as many as 21% of the respondents indicated that they searched for health information on Facebook. The obtained research results point to the conclusion that urological patients have a medium level of trust in online health information and indicate the need to increase the level of health literacy among patients in Croatia through various educational campaigns at the national and international level. The problem of online disinformation raises also numerous legal issues. Therefore, the legal framework of liability due to the violation of an individual’s right to health, by disinformation, was explored.

Joint Models for Longitudinal and Time-to-event Data with JM R Package

Even if the value of the risk factor evolves continuously in the extended Cox model, the inference may be somewhat biased because it employs a discrete approximation method. As a result, if the risk factor’s value not only fluctuates constantly but also contains measurement error, a model that substitutes the average value rather than the measured value of the risk factor might be considered. Such a model is known as a joint model. After introducing the most widely used the present-value model among joint models, this model was extended to various types of data. In addition, several residuals for model diagnosis were introduced, methods for predicting the probability of event occurrence and the value of the longitudinal risk factor by application of the estimation model were introduced, and an index that can evaluate how well the longitudinal risk factors divide patients into high-risk and low-risk groups was introduced. Finally, all the statistical inference methods introduced in this study were implemented using the JM R package and the source codes were supplied.

Exploring climate change impacts on rural livelihoods and adaptation strategies: Reflections from marginalized communities in India

Climate change and variability affect virtually everyone and every region of the world but the effects are nowhere more prominent than among rural marginalized communities that rely heavily on agriculture and fishing for a living and they face numerous livelihood challenges including risk posed by variability of climate. Using phenomenological research methods, interviews with key-informants, focus group discussions (FGD), household survey with standardised questionnaires and case study approach, the present study analyzes the perceptions of climate change and its impacts on livelihoods and well-being of rural marginalized communities in rural Dakshin Dinajpur district of the state of West Bengal, India and coping mechanisms adopted by these communities were also examined using participatory social research techniques. The research is primarily based on primary data which have been collected at household level using multistage purposive sampling methods and total sample size is 154. Descriptive and inferential statistical methods were employed for data analysis. The results were discussed in the context of the sustainable livelihoods approach and findings depicts that there is a decreasing trend in the availability of water for domestic purposes, crop failure and low agricultural production, reduction in human health, poor livestock health and a range of other problems due to climate change which subsequently impacted on their livelihood. Indigenous and local knowledge were widely used in dealing with the effects of climate change, while modern technologies were underutilized among marginalized communities. Farmers and fisherman's used multiple adaptation strategies to combat climate change effects such as modifications in farm management, migration, selling labour to neighbourhoods, measures related to financial resources and risk reduction, borrowing funds from local money lender as well as family and neighbours, credit programmes and assistance from NGOs and reducing household food consumption. Large-scale education, training programmes, development interventions and policies targeted at enhancing resource endowment are needed. The findings from this study can help policymakers and other stack holders about ongoing adaptation measures as well as the needs of households, bring out the gap between farm households and policymakers and also to develop suitable policies and effective adaptation strategies to enhance the livelihoods within this context of local marginalized communities context.

The Relationship Between Economic Growth and Foreign Direct Investment in the Philippine Economy

Foreign Direct Investments (FDI) serves as a financial provider to some countries who experience sluggish economy. Through this investment, it promotes stable, long-term interests, and generates a direct inflow from other countries and direct inflow of the capital in the economic system of a certain country. In this research, it demonstrates the indicators of how economic growth could attract foreign direct investment to boost its development in a certain country, mainly in the Philippines. It is important to identify how FDI would sustain the economic development despite of the ups and downs that have experienced in the Philippines. This research study used Inferential Statistics Method wherein it allows one to describe data and interpret as well as formulate conclusions out from appropriate data. The findings showed that only one variable have significant effect on Foreign Direct Investments. Stock market is highly significant impact by FDI, as shown by their p-values below the 5% level of significance. This research study conclude that Economic Growth has a significant relationship to Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). This means that 1 unit of GDP will increase FDI to 0.08%. When PSE Index increase by1 unit, Foreign Direct Investment decreases by -413 units.

Forensic Accounting and Fraud Control in Auditing Firms in Kigali, Rwanda

The primary goal of this study was to determine how forensic accounting contributes to fraud prevention and control within the Auditing Firms in Kigali, Rwanda. More specifically, the stud y sought to examine how internal controls, knowledge of forensic accounting and skills and management tools influence fraud control in Auditing Firms in Kigali, Rwanda. The study was anchored on Fraud Triangle Theory and Fraud Diamond Model. Descriptive research design was adopted to help determine patterns and trends in order to make conclusions from the data collected. The target population for this study was a total of 76 staff members thereby employing a census approach. The researcher was collected by primary data by use of closed-ended questionnaires to the respondents. For these, the study used simple random sampling to select all the respondents. Primary data was collected by use of closed-ended questionnaires to the respondents. Secondary data was collected using data collection sheet. Secondary Data involved the use of financial reports, regulatory documents, and academic literature will be reviewed to gain insights into the prevailing financial fraud trends in Rwanda. Validity and reliability were tested to ensure the sanctity of the research tool and thus facilitate piloting which was done to selected auditing firms Rusumo. Data analysis was conducting using both descriptive (Frequencies, mean, standard deviation) and inferential (regression and correlation) statistical methods using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS version24). Composition of Ukrainian households under forced migration and its impact on livelihood opportunities at early stage of stay in Krakow

ABSTRACT In this study, we analyze the changes in the composition of Ukrainian households participating in mass migration to Krakow, Poland, at the onset of the war and verify the significance of their newly formed composition for their financial situation abroad. For this purpose, we utilize household-level data and statistical inference methods. The findings reveal that the decisions to leave the home country were often associated with separation, not only from life partners but also from elderly members of the households. We confirm the significance of the presence of specific household members, such as life partners, other adults, and children, for households opportunities and limitations in the host country. We recognize households with seniors as having the most challenging financial situation. Conversely, singles and households with adults other than life partners are found to have the highest degree of self-reliance due to their access to private financial resources and social networks. Migrating couples tended to rely on public assistance but were determined to find employment. Households with children were found to be dependent on diverse forms of public assistance and showed less interest in gainful employment but open to social integration.

Stakeholder Involvement and Strategy Implementation among County Governments in Kenya: A Case Study of Narok County Government, Kenya

In today’s global environment, management is constantly looking for initiatives in creating and sustaining a stakeholder involvement within the organizations to motivate them in strategy implementation. However, stakeholders have continued to complain about how management of different organizations has compromised strategy implementation. The aim of this study therefore, was to ascertain the effects of stakeholder involvement on strategy implementation in Narok County Government in Kenya. The specific objectives were: to determine the effect of stakeholder procedure compliance the effect of stakeholder communication stakeholders’ involvement and stakeholder support on strategy implementation at Narok County Government. The research employed descriptive research design. The target population comprised 58 top level managers, 46 middle level managers; 30 lower-level managers and 300 community project representatives. The study adopted proportionate stratified random sampling technique to select a sample of 87 respondents from the target population. The research utilized primary data collection methods via the utilization of questionnaires including both open-ended and closed-ended questions. The instruments' validity was established via the assessment of face and content validity, while reliability was evaluated utilizing Cronbach's Alpha. The study's findings indicated a statistically significant positive correlation between the independent factors and the dependent variables under investigation. Hence, it is recommended that the county government actively solicit perspectives and opinions from various stakeholders throughout the process of plan implementation, while also facilitating their active involvement in such implementation.
