Search for signals from extraterrestrial civilizations by the method of synchronous dispersion reception

It is suggested that optimal call signals of extraterrestrial civilizations are rare pulse signals in the decimeter and centimeter bands. Problems related to the optimization of equipment for the search for such signals are considered. To detect remote radio emission sources, highest sensitivity can probably be realized using the method of synchronized reception for two (or more) widely spaced stations and by selecting among received signals those with characteristic properties related to dispersion in intersteller matter. Staff members of the Institute of Space Research jointly with the Shternberg State Astronomical Institute of Moscow State University, the Moscow Power Engineering Institute, and the V. I. Lenin Moscow State Pedagogical Institute, prepared suitable equipment for the 350–550-MHz and 13,700–15,200-MHz frequency bands and, in 1972, carried out a series of measurements on a 3000-km base. The results obtained from a consideration of the experimental data are presented.

An Exchange Teacher at the Kiev State Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages

This report is based on a visit to in the Fall of 1974 under the AFS-Soviet language teachers exchange. The FL Teachers Institute is described in terms of numbers, organization, activities, and level of proficiency. The program is followed from entrance qualifications to post graduation prospects. Specific aspects of Kiev English are listed, and a brief survey is made of overall methodology, some of the textbooks used, and of the physical facilities. An attempt is also made to examine the internal structure of both the student body and the faculty, and of their work loads and financial arrangements. Despite ambiguities, incurred in part by the brevity of the exchange term, the experience has proved beneficial to the Institute and to the Americans involved.

Certain difficulties in mastering English tense forms in higher special Lithuanian schools

In November 1967 a test was carried out at Vilnius State University and Vilnius State Pedagogical Institute with the aim to check the second- and third-year students’ knowledge, skills and habits in using English tenses. The objective of the test was to ascertain the difficulties the students encounter in learning English tenses. The results of the test revealed the following: I. The largest number of mistakes is made in the use of the Past Indefinite, Present Perfect and Past Perfect. This is caused by some reasons of philological and methodological character. Partially the teaching process which does not provide for the study of grammar as a separate aspect is to be blamed. II. The teaching of grammar should be rearranged in the following way: a) by changing the system of presenting and consolidating the grammar material proceeding from the peculiarities of the grammar system of the native language; b) by teaching grammar as a separate aspect in close connection with the entire material of the English language, taught at every particular higher school
