New species of Salicaceae with opposite leaves from the Atlantic Forest, Brazil

Abatia mantiqueirensis is described and illustrated as a new species with distribution for the Brazilian states of Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro. It is morphologically similar to A. americana but can be distinguished by the presence of canaliculated petiole, acute serrate leaf margin, glands at the apex of the margin serrations that are rounded to concave and projected outwards from the leaf blade, upper portion of the pedicel winged and seeds with tiny dorsal wings. Taxonomic description, comments, and geographical distribution information are here in provided. So far, only three populations of A. mantiqueirensis are known with only one of them recorded in a protected area. Based on the availability of suitable habitats, possible threats and future potential geographical distribution, we propose the conservation status for A. mantiqueirensis as Critically Endangered.

Impact of ground motion uncertainty evolution from post-earthquake data on building damage assessment

Accurate damage assessment after an earthquake is crucial for effective emergency response. Using ground motion information enables rapid building damage assessment when detailed damage data are unavailable. While uncertainty in earthquake parameters plays a significant role in the accuracy of rapid estimations, it is usually treated as a constant parameter rather than as a dynamic parameter that considers the amount of ground motion data collected that evolve over time. This work investigates the impact of incorporating evolving ground motion uncertainty in ground motion estimations from US Geological Survey’s (USGS) ShakeMap on post-disaster damage assessments from two methodologies: the revised Thiel–Zsutty (TZR) model and Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Hazus. Using data from the 2020 Indios earthquake in Puerto Rico and the 2014 Napa earthquake, we find that changes in uncertainty in estimates of peak ground acceleration reach 65% between early and late versions of the ShakeMap. We propose a process to integrate this evolution with the two damage assessment methodologies through a Monte Carlo simulation-based approach, demonstrating that it is critical to introduce dynamic ground motion uncertainty in the damage assessment process to avoid propagating unreliable measures. Both methodologies show that resulting damage estimates can be characterized by narrower distributions, indicative of reduced uncertainty and increased precision in damage estimates. For the TZR model, an improved estimate of post-disaster loss is achieved with narrower bounds in distributions of expected high scenario loss. For Hazus, the results show potential changes in the most probable damage state with an average change of 13% in the most probable damage state. The described methodology also demonstrates how uncertainty in the resulting damage state distributions can be reduced compared with the use of the current Hazus methodology.

Modeling of the electronic excited states in high-temperature flows

This article introduces a novel model for describing the electronic excited states in the direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) technique. The model involves the coupling the vibrational and electronic modes of molecular species, enabling each electronic excited state to excite its unique vibrational quantum levels. Numerical techniques are developed for equilibrium and post-collision sampling, as well as for measuring the internal temperature. The DSMC results demonstrate excellent agreement with theoretical predictions, providing verification of the successful implementation in a DSMC solver. For important thermophysical properties of molecular oxygen, such as the specific heat capacity, it is shown that the new model provides a better prediction than a compilation of past studies in comparison to the standard uncoupled approach in DSMC. The model is then applied to simulate a canonical nonreactive oxygen hypersonic flow past a cylindrical body. The population distribution of electronic excited states exhibit significant deviation from the standard approach typically used in the coupling between DSMC and radiation transport solvers.

Collisionless Relaxation from Near-equilibrium Configurations: Linear Theory and Application to Tidal Stripping

Placed slightly out of dynamical equilibrium, an isolated stellar system quickly returns toward a steady virialized state. We study this process of collisionless relaxation using the matrix method of linear response theory. We show that the full phase-space distribution of the final virialized state can be recovered directly from the disequilibrium initial conditions, without the need to compute the time evolution of the system. This shortcut allows us to determine the final virialized configuration with minimal computational effort. Complementing this result, we develop tools to model the system's full time evolution in the linear approximation. In particular, we show that moments of the velocity distribution can be efficiently computed using a generalized moment matrix. We apply our linear methods to study the relaxation of energy-truncated Hernquist spheres, mimicking the tidal stripping of a cuspy dark matter subhalo. Comparison of our linear predictions against controlled, isolated N-body simulations shows agreement at percent level for the parts of the system where a linear response to the perturbation is expected. We find that relaxation generates a tangential velocity anisotropy in the intermediate regions, despite the initial disequilibrium state having isotropic kinematics. Our results also strengthen the case for relaxation depleting the amplitude of the density cusp, without affecting its asymptotic slope. Finally, we compare the linear theory against an N-body simulation of tidal stripping on a radial orbit, confirming that the theory still accurately predicts density and velocity dispersion profiles for most of the system.

Nonlinear Dynamics and Meshing State Transition Analysis of Spalling Defect Gears with Multi-Lubrication Conditions

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the dynamic characteristics and the meshing state transition characteristics of spalling defect gears under various lubrication conditions. The time-varying geometric parameters, motion parameters and load distribution of the gears in the state of positive meshing and reverse impact are analyzed. The time-varying meshing stiffness considering the time-varying friction coefficient under elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL), mixed lubrication and boundary lubrication are calculated, and the spalling defect is introduced in the stiffness calculation process. The equivalent lubrication model of the gear is established, the switching condition of the lubrication state is derived, and the distribution of the lubrication state in the torque-speed plane is discussed. The multimeshing state dynamic model of the spalling defect gear is established, and the evolution characteristics of the coexistence response and the transition of the meshing state under different lubrication conditions are simulated by using the attraction domain, phase trajectory, meshing force and bifurcation diagram. The results show that the phase trajectory of the gear with the spalling defect is deformed compared with that of the healthy gear. The change of lubrication state has little effect on the phase trajectory and attraction domain of the gear with spalling defect, but has a great influence on the meshing force. At the spalling boundary, the meshing force is changed abruptly, and the worse the lubrication state, the more obvious the mutation. Due to the influence of spalling on tooth stiffness, it will also affect the meshing force in the nonspalling area.

Modeling and Mapping Water Erosion Risk via GIS, Remote Sensing, and the PAP/RAC Model - Case of Tamdrost Watershed, Morocco

Water erosion remains the main form of land degradation globally, with a particularly high sensitivity in Morocco. This study aims to assess and map areas at risk of water erosion in the Tamdroust watershed (Settat Plateau, Morocco) using the PAP/RAC model combined with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing. This comprehensive approach integrates several factors influencing erosion, such as topography, lithology, vegetation density, and land use, to identify erosion-prone areas. The methodology comprises three phases.The first, "predictive" phase generates a synthesized map illustrating the distribution of erosion states. The second phase spatializes different forms of erosion. Finally, the third phase integrates the results of the first two phases. The first phase reveals an abundance of moderate erosion covering 52% of the area, with significant erosion observed in about 7% of the watershed, indicating a trend towards increased erosion without intervention. The subsequent phases identified several forms of erosion such as sheet erosion, gully erosion, solifluction, and Badlands, mainly in areas with steep slopes and low vegetation cover. These results underline the need for interventions to prevent further deterioration of the Tamdroust watershed, highlighting the importance of sustainable land and water resource management in the region.

A compartmental modal for type2 diabetes on the effect of plasma glucose -insulin regulatory system by Jacobes model

A compartmental model for diabetes is developed. The model describes the dynamics of the spread of Type 2 diabetes. A theoretical analysis in the non-adherence to drugs is investigated. A system of differential equations is analyzed by stability analysis; the non-trivial critical point obtained is locally asymptotically firm under the given conditions. In consideration of Mathematical model for glucose tolerance test (GTT) is considered, actual glucose data values are fixed using MATLAB least squares curve fitting technique. Two methods are used to numerically work out the distributions of steady states of diabetic sub-populations. The Gauss-Seidel method is more accurate than the Jacobi method. The result show that more than 50% of clinical diagnosis attempt needs to be applied to have more diagnosed population than undiagnosed. The GTT model shows that if severe diet and medication is followed diabetes can be controlled.

Effect of Annealing Temperature on Microstructure and Magnetocaloric Properties of Gd-Based Metallic Microfibers

In this paper, vacuum annealing has been adopted to introduce atomic cluster micro-regions inside Gd-based metallic microfibers to further explore the effect of the structural changes on the magnetocaloric properties and the mechanism which is systematically expressed. The experimental results indicate that the as-prepared Gd-based metallic microfibers have favorable amorphous formation ability and thermal stability. After annealing @ 380 °C, the maximum magnetic entropy change −ΔSmmax, refrigerating capacity (RC), and relative cooling power (RCP) values of the Gd-based metallic microfibers are 7.20 J/kg·K, 459.4 J/kg, and 588.7 J/kg, respectively. Combined with the transmission electron microscopy analysis results, the internal organizational order of the annealed microfibers is significantly altered, and the atomic clusters formed in localized regions, which reduce the magnetocrystalline anisotropy of the microfibers. While under the uni-action of an external magnetic field, the magnetic moment rotation state and magnetic domain structure distribution of the micro-region atoms will be changed obviously, thereby changing the general magnetic properties and magnetocaloric properties of the metallic microfibers. The above research results can promote the engineering application of Gd-based metallic microfibers in the field of magnetic refrigeration.

Influence of low-temperature cap layer thickness on the structure and luminescence of InGaN/GaN multiple quantum wells

In order to effectively regulate the luminescence performance of MQW and enhance its optical quality, it is crucial to investigate the InGaN/GaN MQW's structure and luminescence properties. In this study the focus is how they are affected by low-temperature cap (LT-cap) layer's thickness which is grown above each InGaN well layer during growth process of InGaN/GaN multiple quantum well (MQW) samples in MOCVD system. This was achieved by analyzing high resolution X-ray diffraction (HRXRD) spectra, electroluminescence (EL) spectra, temperature-dependent photoluminescence (TDPL) spectra, and micro-area fluorescence imaging of these samples. The results show that changes in LT-cap layer's thickness even have no significant impact on some structural parameters of MQW, such as the thickness of the well layer, but have an influence on the In component of the well layer. Due to the existence of LT-cap layer, dissociation of InGaN can be effectually reduced. In addition, the augmentation of LT-cap layer's thickness will make polarization effect of the QW sample more remarkable, so that the blue shift of the EL peak with the augmentation of current injection increases. The change of LT-cap layer's thickness will also influence distribution of the tail states of the quantum wells, which leads to a different localization states for injected carriers. As LT-cap layer becomes getting thicker, the material's internal quantum efficiency (IQE) tends to decrease, which may result from an increase in non-radiative recombination centers.

Rotational state-to-state transition rate coefficients for H2O + H2O collisions at nonequilibrium conditions

The goal is to develop a database of rate coefficients for rotational state-to-state transitions in H$_ $O + H$_ $O collisions that is suitable for the modeling of energy transfer in nonequilibrium conditions, in which the distribution of rotational states of H$_ $O deviates from local thermodynamic equilibrium. A two-temperature model was employed that assumed that although there is no equilibrium between all possible degrees of freedom in the system, the translational and rotational degrees of freedom can be expected to achieve their own equilibria independently, and that they can be approximately characterized by Boltzmann distributions at two different temperatures, $T_ kin $ and $T_ rot Upon introducing our new parameterization of the collisional rates, taking into account their dependence on both $T_ kin $ and $T_ rot $, we find a change of up to 20<!PCT!> in the H$_ $O rotational level populations for both ortho and para-H$_ $O for the part of the cometary coma where the nonequilibrium regime occurs.

Continuous distribution of interface states in n-type double-side poly-Si/SiOx passivating contact solar cells

Advanced passivation contact in high-efficiency silicon solar cells plays an important role for the sake of minimizing recombination losses. A stack of heavily doped polycrystalline silicon (poly-Si) and tunnel SiOx contact has attracted much attention, benefitting from its excellent characteristics of carrier selectivity and passivation, and which has been successfully applied in double-side poly-Si/SiOx passivating contact solar cells. Note that characteristics analysis of defects at tunnel SiOx/c-Si (crystalline silicon) interface remains an issue of concern. Herein, we observe capacitance transient spectroscopy arise from both electron and hole traps in the passivating contact structure of poly-Si(p+)/tunnel SiOx/c-Si(n). Subsequently, we propose a skillful procedure of deep-level transient spectroscopy (DLTS) measurement to confirm that the observed electron and hole traps are located at the tunnel SiOx/c-Si interface but not in the bulk of the c-Si substrate. Finally, we show a clear physical picture of continuous energy distribution for interface states.

Effect of interlayer thickness on electrochemical properties and corrosion resistance of sputtered TiNxnm/Tixnm multilayer thin films

Three multilayers [TiNxnm/Tixnm/p-type Si (100)] (x = 2.5, 5, 10) were fabricated using a dc-magnetron sputtering to evaluate surface and interfacial effect on electrochemical properties for possible application in supercapacitor electrode materials. The (111) and (101) planes of TiN and Ti were observed at 36.50° and 40.19° respectively. TA, LA, and TO phonon modes were found at 254.12, 306.15, and 637.94 cm−1, respectively. The defect state distribution of Ti, N, and O was investigated from PL. XPS confirmed the Ti at. % of TiNxnm/Tixnm multilayers decreased from 43.07 to 12.04 and N at. % increased from 42.79 to 72.53 % as the x value decreased from 10 nm to 2.5 nm. The areal specific capacitance (Ca) and energy density (E) of the TiNxnm/Tixnm multilayer electrode increased with decreasing multilayer thickness. E varied from 0.27 to 1.37 mWhcm−2 and the power density (P) from 5.04 to 25.4 mWcm−2 for the multilayers. The diffusion coefficient (D) and total accumulated charge (Qin) decreased from 6.48 × 10−17 to 1.56 × 10−18 cm2/s and 1.82 to 1.64 C/cm2, respectively, for TiNxnm/Tixnm multilayers. The capacitive contribution was the highest in x = 10 (2.181 Av−1s). However, the diffusion-limited contribution was maximum in x = 5 (3.541 Av−1/2s1/2). The cyclic stability maintained at 85.4 % capacitive retention over 1000 cycles and the expansive potential window (up to 0.8 V in 1 M H2SO4) makes the multilayer thin films ideal for supercapacitor electrodes. Among all the samples, the TiN2.5nm/Ti2.5nm exhibited the highest Ca, E, and diffusion coefficient, originating from the smaller layer thickness, leading to more ohmic conductivity and facilitating the supercapacitive performance.

Source-independent quantum secret sharing with entangled photon pair networks.

The large-scale deployment of quantum secret sharing (QSS) in quantum networks is currently challenging due to the requirements for the generation and distribution of multipartite entanglement states. Here we present an efficient source-independent QSS protocol utilizing entangled photon pairs in quantum networks. Through the post-matching method, which means the measurement events in the same basis are matched, the key rate is almost independent of the number of participants. In addition, the unconditional security of our QSS against internal and external eavesdroppers can be proved by introducing an equivalent virtual protocol. Our protocol has great performance and technical advantages in future quantum networks.

Study on the phase state and temperature-pressure distribution of CO2 injection wellbore and its effect on tubing stress conditions

This study investigates the phenomena observed during CO₂ injection processing in wellbores, particularly the annular pressure buildup typically attributed to inadequate packer sealing. We propose that temperature, pressure, and phase changes during CO₂ injection induce equivalent stresses, leading to packer unsealing. A detailed CO₂ injection model was developed, incorporating temperature-pressure coupling and phase transitions using the state equation. The model evaluates the effects of injection temperature, pressure, and volume on CO₂ density, temperature, pressure, phase state, and velocity, and calculates the stress on the tubing at various depths. Validation against actual measurements showed errors of 1.43% for pressure and 0.66% for temperature, confirming the model's accuracy. Key findings reveal that injection temperature significantly affects CO₂ phase changes, while injection temperature and volume respectively impact stress at the wellhead and bottom. The model provides a robust tool for optimizing CO₂-EOR processes, confirming that changes in injection parameters can indeed cause packer unsealing, and its reliance on precise input data highlights the need for accurate field measurements.

Hiddenly degrading performance prognosis based on recursive model incorporating double-layer rolling optimization strategy

An integrated and adaptive prognostic framework is proposed for hiddenly degrading actuator in the closed-loop system. Furthermore, the dual influence of degradation progress and operation time is considered in the established augmented model. It is important to obtain accurate and real-time distribution of degradation information under different degradation progress. Firstly, the expectation and variance of hidden index, unknown operation time parameter and degradation progress parameter are evaluated by designing a double-layer rolling optimization strategy. Then, the uncertainty distribution of degradation model is iteratively derived by employing Bayesian theorem. Finally, the distribution of remaining useful life (RUL) is calculated based on available distribution of degradation model and states. The effectiveness of proposed algorithm is demonstrated by a mold model of continuous casting driven by servo motor.

Multi-hazard life-cycle consequence analysis of deteriorating engineering systems

Probabilistic life-cycle consequence (LCCon) analysis (e.g., assessment of repair costs, downtime, or casualties over an asset’s service life) can enable optimal life-cycle management of critical assets under uncertainties. This can lead to effective risk-informed decision-making for future disaster management (i.e., risk mitigation and/or resilience-enhancing strategies/policies) implementation. Nevertheless, despite recent advances in understanding, modeling, and quantifying multiple-hazard (or multi-hazard) interactions, most available LCCon analytical formulations fail to accurately compute the exacerbated consequences which may stem from incomplete or absent repair actions between different interacting hazard events. This paper introduces a discrete-time, discrete-state Markovian framework for efficient multi-hazard LCCon analysis of deteriorating engineering systems (e.g., buildings, infrastructure components) that appropriately accounts for complex interactions between natural hazard events and their effects on a system’s performance. The Markovian assumption is used to model the probability of a system being in any performance level (i.e., limit state) after multiple hazard events inducing either instantaneous and/or gradual deterioration and after potential repair actions through implementing stochastic (transition) matrices. LCCon estimates are then obtained by combining limit state probabilties with suitable system-level consequence models in a computationally efficient manner. The proposed framework is illustrated for two case studies subject to earthquake and flood events as well as environment-induced corrosion during their service life. The first is a reinforced concrete building and the second is a simple transportation road network with a reinforced concrete bridge.

High-confidence calling of normal epithelial cells allows identification of a novel stem-like cell state in the colorectal cancer microenvironment.

Single-cell analyses can be confounded by assigning unrelated groups of cells to common developmental trajectories. For instance, cancer cells and admixed normal epithelial cells could adopt similar cell states thus complicating analyses of their developmental potential. Here, we develop and benchmark CCISM (for Cancer Cell Identification using Somatic Mutations) to exploit genomic single nucleotide variants for the disambiguation of cancer cells from genomically normal non-cancer cells in single-cell data. We find that our method and others based on gene expression or allelic imbalances identify overlapping sets of colorectal cancer versus normal colon epithelial cells, depending on molecular characteristics of individual cancers. Further, we define consensus cell identities of normal and cancer epithelial cells with higher transcriptome cluster homogeneity than those derived using existing tools. Using the consensus identities, we identify significant shifts of cell state distributions in genomically normal epithelial cells developing in the cancer microenvironment, with immature states increased at the expense of terminal differentiation throughout the colon, and a novel stem-like cell state arising in the left colon. Trajectory analyses show that the new cell state extends the pseudo-time range of normal colon stem-like cells in a cancer context. We identify cancer-associated fibroblasts as sources of WNT and BMP ligands potentially contributing to increased plasticity of stem cells in the cancer microenvironment. Our analyses advocate careful interpretation of cell heterogeneity and plasticity in the cancer context and the consideration of genomic information in addition to gene expression data when possible.

An exactly solvable asymmetric K-exclusion process

We study an interacting particle process on a finite ring with L sites with at most K particles per site, in which particles hop to nearest neighbors with rates given in terms of t-deformed integers and asymmetry parameter q, where t > 0 and q⩾0 are parameters. This model, which we call the (q, t) asymmetric simple K-exclusion process (ASEP), reduces to the usual ASEP on the ring when K = 1 and to a model studied by Schütz and Sandow (Phys. Rev. E, 1994) when t=q=1 . This is a special case of the misanthrope process and as a consequence, the steady state does not depend on q and is of product form, generalizing the same phenomena for the ASEP. What is interesting here is the steady state weights are given by explicit formulas involving t-binomial coefficients, and are palindromic polynomials in t. Interestingly, although the (q, t) K-ASEP does not satisfy particle-hole symmetry, its steady state does. We analyze the density and calculate the most probable number of particles at a site in the steady state in various regimes of t. Lastly, we construct a two-dimensional exclusion process on a discrete cylinder with height K and circumference L which projects to the (q, t) K-ASEP and whose steady state distribution is also of product form. We believe this model will serve as an illustrative example in constructing two-dimensional analogues of misanthrope processes.Simulations are attached as ancillary files.

A parallel algorithm for reliability assessment of multi-state flow networks based on simultaneous finding of all multi-state minimal paths and performing state space decomposition

This article presents a new efficient method for reliability evaluation of two-terminal Multi-state Flow Networks (MFNs). Indirect State Space Decomposition (SSD) methods are usually more efficient than direct SSD methods. However, indirect SSD methods require searching for all d-MPs/d-MCs. The presented method requires only an MFN, a system demand requirement d, and the probability distributions of states of components as an input. The presented algorithm uses a partition technique to decompose a state space into smaller and distinct subspaces. The algorithm tries to determine a d-flow with a lower bound for each subspace. If a flow exists and it is a d-MP, the algorithm computes the probability that a capacity vector belongs to this subspace and is bounded below by the d-MP and decomposes this subspace into smaller subspaces. For all subspaces without d-MP, the presented algorithm uses parallel computations and the SSD method to compute the probability that a capacity vector belongs to this subspace and is bounded below by a d-MP. The numerical experiments show that the efficiency of the presented method improves in comparison with other indirect SSD methods if the number of available logical processes and the number of d-MPs increase.
