Dewatering and stabilization of Black cotton soil using Electrokinetic Geosynthetics

Electrokinetic Geosynthetics (EKG) is a platform technology used to dewater and stabilize highly saturated soft clayey soils, mine tailings, tunnelling slurry waste, sewage sludge etc. This laboratory study investigates the potential of EKG made of woven coir geotextile to stabilize highly expansive saturated black cotton soil collected from the Hubli-Dharward region of Karnataka state, India. An electoosmosis design was made in a tank setup where the soil was dewatered for a period of 7 days under three varying potential (15V, 30V & 60V) and different electrode configuration. The results demonstrated an increase in the rate of pore water dissipation by 500% at an optimum voltage gradient of 30V in various electrode spacing. The results of the EKG treatment at various voltages revealed that, as applied voltages increased up to 60 V, the liquid limits and plasticity indices rapidly dropped. An exponential increase in undrained shear strength of the soil was observed at an electrode configuration of 4A-1C.

Stabilization of Black Cotton Soil Using Lime and Bamboo Fiber Mixture as a Subgrade Material

Abstract: The design of pavements on black cotton soil has always been a difficult task for the engineers as the structure and pavement resting on black cotton soil cracks without any warning. Black cotton soil is most commonly found in Indian region. Soil proportion changes depending upon their constituents, i.e., water content, density, bulk density, compressive strength etc. The properties of black cotton soil can be modified by stabilizing the soil with the use of additives or by mechanical means. The aim of this project is to find the optimum percentage of lime separately and lime + bamboo fibre separately to be added in black cotton Soil and study the properties of soil. In this project an attempt has been made to stabilize the soil using lime and bamboo fibre. Initially lime is blended with black cotton soil in different proportions (2%, 4%, 6%, 8%). The experimental work included the tests carried out on virgin black cotton soil and lime added black cotton soil which are Liquid limit, Plastic limit, modified proctor, specific gravity, free swell index, C.B.R. test, unconfined compressive strength test. On the basis of the soaked CBR and Modified Proctor Values, it is determined that 6% of lime is an optimum percent which can be added to stabilize black cotton soil for road construction. So, 6% lime is added with black cotton soil and different percentages of bamboo fibres (2%, 4%, 6%, 8%). California Bearing Ration, modified proctor test, Unconfined Compressive strength test are performed on the soil mixture of 6% lime + Black Cotton Soil + different percent of Bamboo Fibre. On the basis of the soaked CBR, it is concluded that if 6% lime with 8% of bamboo fibre is blended in black cotton soil, engineering properties of BCS can be improved to such an extent that the pavements built on this soil can efficiently withstand the loads applied on it while vehicular movement. Hence, according to the results obtained from experimental study, pavement design is performed for CBR 5%, 6%, 8%. The evaluation of cost for each pavement design is carried out which shows the decrease in cost of construction of pavement as the CBR values increases.

A Study on Stabilization of Black Cotton Soil using Fly Ash and Rice Husk Ash

Stabilization of soil is important to enhance the engineering properties of expansive soil like strength, volume stability and durability the black cotton soil has very low bearing capacity and high swelling and shrinkage characteristics due it has very poor foundation material for civil engineering construction .The main objective of the work is to upgrade the expansive soil as a construction materials by using fly ash and rice husk ash which are waste materials to be used in black cotton soil to stable the soil and to resists from shrinkage or swelling . It can test by using some laboratory test like liquid limit , plastic limit and standard proctor test ( light compaction) , CBR test , Soil sample is mixing of fly ash as percentage of 5% , 10% , 15% , 20%and rice husk ash of 10%, 15% ,20% ,25% and the study of the work was to evaluate the effect of fly ash and rice husk ash to improve the performances of black cotton soil .

Assessment of lime stabilization of black cotton soil for roads construction projects

The design foundation (i.e., pavements) on black cotton soil has always been a difficult task for the engineers as the structure resting on black cotton soil cracks without any warning. This research evaluates the effect of lime (anhydrous sodium sulphate) on engineering properties of black cotton soil which are considered highly problematic to civil engineering works. Black cotton soil brings about significant geotechnical and structural engineering challenges to property and infrastructure development around the world. The objective of the study is to investigate the use of lime-stabilized black cotton soil as subbase material in flexible pavements. Black cotton soil procured from the local area in Gaborone, Botswana, tested for suitability as subbase material, turned out to be unsuitable as it resulted in very less CBR value (4.8%). The black cotton soil-lime mix was checked for consistency limits, compaction, CBR for different proportions of lime (i.e., 0, 5, 10 and 15%). It was observed that the plasticity index of the soil shows a substantial decrease upon addition of the lime whereas CBR values show a marked increase with unsoaked CBR. The addition of 5%, 10% and 15% of lime produced some desirable soil properties. It can be concluded lime could be one of the best alternative stabilizer materials for highly expansive clayey.

Stabilization of black cotton soil with waste plastic and admixtures

Black cotton soil is inorganic clay formed mainly in regions with poor drainage conditions. However, it is considered a problematic soil in the field of geotechnical engineering because it has high swelling and shrinking nature depending upon the weather conditions. So, one of the most common methods to improve the characteristics of the soil is the stabilizing procedure, which lessens soil settlement and can increase shear strength. The addition of lime is a common technique. It has been shown that adding lime to soil enhances its technical qualities. In the current study, an effort has been made to stabilize the soil by using PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate), Bagasse ash, and Rice husk ash in the percentages of 2 to 8 is used because it has a tendency to enhance the black cotton soil’s current qualities and also utilization of polymeric materials improves the eco-system and decrease the environmental pollution. As It is increasing day by day leading to various environmental concerns.

Abstract: Nearly 51.8 million hectares of land area in India is covered with expansive soils (mainly Black Cotton soil). The property of the expansive soils, in general, is that they are very hard when in dry state, but they lose all of their strength when in wet state. In light of this property of expansive soils, these soils pose problems worldwide that serve as challenge to overcome for the Geotechnical Engineers. One of the most important aspects for construction purpose issoil stabilization, which is used widely in foundation and road pavement constructions; this is because such a stabilization regime improves engineering properties of the soil, such as volume stability, strength and durability. In this process, removal or replacing of the problematic soil is done; replacement is done by a better quality material, or the soil is treatedwith additives. In the present study, RBI Grade 81 obtained from Alchemist Touchnology Limited, Gurgaon, Haryana and Sodium Silicate solution 5mol/Liter obtained from Organ Refractories, Khammam, Telangana are used for the stabilization of black cotton soil. The Effect of Groundnut Shell Ash on Soil Stabilization

The purpose of this study was to focus on how the groundnut shell ash affect the soil stabilization.Groundnut shell ash was used in this study to replace the excessive reliance on industrially created soil enhancing chemicals (cement, lime, and so on) has kept the cost of stabilizing a road high. It was determined that groundnut shell ash may be used and effective as a soil stabilizing component after studying the stabilization of black cotton soil using groundnut shell ash. Therefore, a laboratory study was led to assess the impacts of groundnut Shell Ash on the unconfined compression strength (UCS) and california Bearing Ratio (CBR) of laterite soil. Results show that the addition of groundnut shell can increased the UCS and CBR of the soil samples. It can be concluded that the groundnut shell ash can utili se as gorund improvement option.

Stabilization of Black Cotton Soil Using Rice Husk Ash for Flexible Pavement Construction

Abstract: In India there are different types of soils, and the most likely present soil is clay. The flexible pavement consists of different layers such as embankment, subgrade, GSB, WMM, DBM and BC. Sub grade is the layer which acts as the foundation for pavement. In order to use the cut and fill principle, available nearby lands are selected as the borrow area for making sub grade. In this situation, the soil may not be suitable for subgrade construction. Keeping this in view stabilization of weak soil in situ may be done with suitable stabilizers to save the construction cost considerably. In the present investigation agricultural waste materials like Rice Husk Ash (RHA) which is mixed with soil to study improvement of weak sub grade in terms of compaction and strength characteristics.

Use of Recycled Construction and Demolition (C&D) Wastes in Soil Stabilization

With the growing construction sector, there is a constant rise in wastes generated by both construction and demolition activities. According to an estimate by Building Material Promotion Council (BMPTC), 150 million tonnes of construction and demolition (C&D) wastes are generated in India annually. However, the official recycling capacity is a meagre6, 500 tonnes per day (TPD) - just about 1 percent. This paper examines the properties of Black cotton soil and investigates the use of recycled C&D wastes in soil stabilization of black cotton soil. This research focuses on the inexpensive and eco-friendly nature of C&D wastes as an admixture for soil stabilization. The tests were performed using different proportions of recycled C&D wastes in the proportions: 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, and 25%, to increase the strength of black cotton soil. California Bearing Ratio (CBR) showed an increase from 2% to 18.09%, Maximum Dry Density (MDD) showed a decrease from 2.107 g.cc-1 to 1.69 g.cc-1, and Optimum Moisture Content (OMC) showed a variation and increased from 15% to 18.09% with the addition of 25% C&D wastes.

Stabilization of Black Cotton Soil by Using Rice Husk and Bagasse Ash

Abstract: Black cotton soil is expansive type of soil that expands suddenly and starts swelling once it comes in contact with water. The strength of the soil is very poor due to its physical properties. Expansive soils exhibit improved response in behaviour with different types of stabilizers. Stabilization with admixtures is found to be an effective technique to improve the strength properties of the black cotton soil. During this study the potential of rice husk ash and bagasse ash are found to be useful admixtures to improve the strength properties of the expansive soil. The rice husk is an agricultural by-product from rice milling and bagasse ash is a sugarcane waste from sugar industry. In this research an approach is made to improve the properties of black cotton soil with combination of bagasse ash and rice husk ash. Stabilization of black cotton soil with coal bottom ash

Expansive soils are problematic due to the performances of their clay constituent usually have the potential to show their undesirable engineering properties such as low bearing capacity, high shrinkage and swell characteristics. The shrink-swell behaviour makes the soil inappropriate for direct engineering application in its natural form and in order to enhance its engineering quality to make them more feasible for usage, stabilization soil can be done physically or chemically. The main aim of this is study is the strength properties of black cotton soil like unconfined compressive strength (UCS), California bearing ratio (CBR), & Maximum Dry Density, and Optimum Moisture Content with a stabilizing agent CBA. Being a cementitious material, CBA improves the strength of the expansive soil and reduces the shrinkage and swelling properties due to the existence of silica & alumina. The objective of this study is the analysis of the effect of coal bottom on black cotton soil. Index properties and engineering properties of expansive soil (black cotton soil) were tested in the laboratory. The sample for the test was prepared by CBA addition @ 0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, and 40% as a stabilizing agent with soil, respectively. The results show that up to 30% CBA addition, values of strength parameter increase, and fall afterward.

Stabilizing black cotton soil in subgrade with municipal solid waste incineration ash for lowering greenhouse gas emission: A review

The construction of bituminous pavement causes greenhouse gas emissions which can be reduced significantly by using municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) ash in the subgrade. The present study is the review of work carried out by various researchers on the improvement of engineering properties of expansive soils, namely black cotton soil (BCS), after the addition of MSWI ash to the soil in varying proportions. The study findings indicate that the optimum content of MSWI ash to be added to expansive soils for improvement in strength characteristics varies between 10% and 30%, with the best results at 25% of MSWI ash proportion. This content of MSWI ash increases the unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of expansive black cotton soil from 28.8 kPa to 53.4 kPa and an increase in CBR value from 3.38% to 9.38%. Therefore, the review suggests using MSWI ash, keeping in view the enormous increase in volumes of municipal solid waste (MSW) due to fast urbanization in the country. Most of the past studies on soil stabilization through ashes are based on ashes of thermal power projects. Still, the present research focuses on using MSWI ash for the dual purpose of stabilization of black cotton soil to be used as subgrade material and to minimize greenhouse emissions. This is the novelty of the present study.

Black cotton soil is a soil with low bearing capacity, swelling and shrinkage characteristics. Due to its peculiar characteristics, it forms a very poor foundation material. As black cotton soil is an expansive soil; it creates problem for lightly loaded structure than moderately loaded structure. Through this project, we are trying to study the improvements in the properties of soil by adding coconut fiber of varying percentages. Tests will be conducted to determine liquid limit and unconfined compression strength. Stabilization of soil is an effective method for improving the properties of soil. It has great significance in the future projects.

Expansive Black cotton clay soils are widely distributed worldwide, and are a significant damage to infrastructure and buildigs. It is a common practice around the world to stabilize black cotton soil using fly ash to improve the strength of stabilized sub- base and sub grade soil. Soil stabilization is the improvement of strength or bearing capacity of soil by controlled compaction, proportioning or addition of suitable admixtures or stabilizers. The Black cotton soils are extremely hard when dry, but lose its strength fully when in wet condition. In monsoon they guzzle water and swell and in summer they shrink on evaporation of water from there. Because of its high Swelling and shrinkage characteristics the black cotton soils has been a challenge to the highway engineers.So in this research paper fly ash has been used to improve the various strength properties of natural black cotton soil.The objective of this research paper is to improve the engineering properties of black cotton soil by adding different percentage of fly ash by the weight of soil and make it suitable for construction. A series of standard Proctor tests (for calculation of MDD and OMC) and California Bearing Ratio (C.B.R) tests are conducted on both raw Black cotton soil and mixed soil with different percentages of fly ash (5%, 10%, 20%, 30%) by weight. A comparison between properties of raw black cotton soil, black cotton soil mixed with fly ash are performed .It is found that the properties of black cotton soil mixed with fly ash are suitably enhanced.

Enhancing Index and Strength Properties of Black Cotton Soil using Combination of Geopolymer and Flyash

A Combination of admixtures - fly ash and Geopolymer are used for stabilization of black cotton soil. Black cotton (BC) soils are mainly clayey soils having montmorillonite as their clay mineral. The moisture changes in BC soils will affect compressibility and strength characteristics, which are greatly enhanced with the addition of combination of Flyash (FA) and Geopolymer (GP). The evaluation study includes analysis of soil properties some of index properties like specific gravity, liquid limit, shrinkage limit and Uniaxial compression values. Different percentages of combination of admixtures (percentage by dry weight) are added to natural BC soil and further experiments are performed from these soil mix ratios (MR). The results show that the utilization of combination of admixtures decreases liquid limit by enormously and increases unconfined compressive strength i.e. the strength of the soil.
