FPGA Accelerator for Real-Time Emulation of Power Electronic Systems Using Multiport Decomposition

Strategies to implement emulation of large power electronic converters with different topologies using a generic multiport decomposition technique with different levels by exploiting the parallel nature of field programmable gate array (FPGA) are explained in this article. Switches are modeled as on / off resistors and a Python-based software tool is developed to precompute the system matrices corresponding to each switch combination. Converters like three-phase five-level-flying-capacitor are modeled in C using the precomputed data, converted to VHDL and implemented on ZCU104 and ZedBoard using Vivado and verified against the corresponding MATLAB-Simulink model. Also, the real-time performance is analyzed by connecting it for the closed-loop speed control of induction motors of various specifications by changing the load torque and reference speed and found out that the latency is less than 6 $\mu$ s, which is sufficient for the wide range of variable frequency drive applications.

Evaluation of the High Performance Indirect Field Oriented Controlled Dual Induction Motor Drive Fed by a Single Inverter using Type-2 Fuzzy Logic Control

In this paper, a high-performance indirect field-oriented controlled dual Induction Motor (IM) drive fed by a single inverter using type-2 fuzzy logic control will be presented. At first, the mathematical model of the IM is implemented in the d-q reference frame. Then, the speed control of the Dual Induction Motor (DIM) operating in parallel configuration with Indirect Field Oriented Control (IFOC) using PI and type-2 Fuzzy Logic Controller (T2-FLC) will be presented. For the control of this system, a DC supply and a Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation (SVPWM) voltage source inverter are introduced with constant switching frequency. Also, the performance of T2-FLC, which is based on the IFOC, is tested and compared to those achieved using the PI controller. The simulation results demonstrate that the T2-FLC is more robust, efficient, and has superior dynamic performance for traction system applications.

Adaptive Command-Filtered Fuzzy Nonsingular Terminal Sliding Mode Backstepping Control for Linear Induction Motor

This paper puts forward a projection-based adaptive command filtered fuzzy nonsingular terminal sliding mode backstepping (PACFTB) control method for the speed control of the linear induction motor (LIM) with unknown end effects. Firstly, the technique of fuzzy logic systems (FLS) is investigated to approximate the nonlinear components of the LIM’s mathematical model, which reduces the difficulty and cost of controller design. Then, a constrained command-filtered backstepping controller is designed with a filtering compensator compensating for the inherent error of constrained filter. Moreover, the nonsingular terminal sliding mode control method is combined in the controller design for its advantages of finite-time convergence of the system, and the projection-operator-based adaptive laws are established at the same time. Finally, the stability analysis proves that the boundedness and stability of all signals can be ensured with the proposed PACFTB controller, and the simulation results along with experiment results verify that the proposed control strategy has better control performance than the conventional command filter backstepping and PI controller.

An Extended Kalman Filter, with pre-adjusted covariance matrices, applied to the sensorless speed control of three-phase induction motors

With the emergence of sensorless control methods, there was a need for the use of estimators and/or state observers to give it the robustness and precision required in the drive of induction motors. This work deals with the application of the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) in the estimation of rotor speed and position, aiming at the implementation of the indirect vector control technique in a sensorless speed control system for three-phase induction motors. The mathematical development of the system state variables associated with the EKF stochastic process is presented in this study, and point out its application under variable speed and load conditions, which are imposed on these motors in everyday life. The sensorless control strategy was tested through routine lines in the Matlab® software, simulating operating conditions of this type of engine, being proven its performance, as well as the convergence times consistent with the usual requirements of high performance systems. The main contributions of this work are the use of a reduced-order EKF (ROEKF) and the preset of covariance matrices to accelerate convergence in speed and position estimates for future implementations in currently accessible digital signal processors.

Speed sensorless control employing adaptive sliding mode adjustable model MRAS for induction motors at low speed range

For the sensorless speed control of induction motors, at low speed range, there exist the common problems such as low speed estimation accuracy, weak loading capacity and poor dynamic performance. When the flux-based model reference adaptive system methods are adopted, the performance of the flux estimation will determine the accuracy of the speed estimation to a large extent. In this paper, an adaptive sliding mode observer was introduced to replace the adjustable model of the traditional model reference adaptive system. The adaptive gain is designed in order to estimate the flux more accurately, and a new speed adaptive law is proposed to improve the dynamic performance and the accuracy of the speed estimation at low speed range. Simulation results verify the correctness and effectiveness of the proposed method.

Idvc Based Hysteresis Controller For Three-Phase Induction Motor Drive

Induction Motor is the most commonly used motor in industrial applications due to its characteristics like self-starting, reliable and easy speed control. The objective of the proposed system is to provide efficient speed control with lesser current harmonics. The Indirect Vector Control (IVDC) method is been presented for speed control of induction motor due to its high dynamic and low drift property. Though there were many classical methods for speed control like Ward-Leonard method etc.; in later years, power electronics circuits were preferred due to its high efficiency, reliability and accuracy. But the presence of static converter in drive circuits results in harmonics, giving in high feedback complexity. Therefore, the Hysteresis controller with conventional Proportional Integral and Differential (PID) control for speed and PI controller for flux is used to control the current harmonics at the point of common coupling. The simulation for speed control in squirrel-cage induction motor is carried out using the MATLAB/Simulink and the parameters like torque, speed, current and Total Harmonic Distortion are analyzed to show optimal response of drive system.

Scalar Speed Control of Induction Motors with Difference Frequency

Speed monitoring of electric motors has attracted the attention of many researchers from past to present. Induction Motor (IM), which is one of the electric motor types, falls behind the nominal speed in different loads. This study was conducted to increase the speed control performance of IM. In the study, speed control of IMs was realized by Difference Frequency (DF). The Scalar Control (SC) method was used in IM speed control. In order to increase the performance of SC, the frequency information received from IM was compared with the reference frequency. The resulting DF was applied to the system input again. For the performance analysis of the study; SC, PI + SC and DF + SC methods were compared. The results obtained from the study simulated in Matlab software show that the proposed method can be used in speed control.

Improvement of adaptive fuzzy control to adjust speed for a doubly fed induction motor drive (DFIM)

This paper presents the doubly fed induction motor (DFIM) speed control using adaptive fuzzy logic PI (AFLPI) controller to give better dynamic performances. Before the advent of modern technology, integral proportional based current controller is usually used due to its simplicity. But, the performance of closed-loop control is largely influenced by this type of speed and torque controllers used, as long as the PI controllers suffer from tuning problem. To overcome the problem, a new technique AFLPI based speed controller for direct field oriented control fed DFIM to get fast speed response and to minimize the torque ripple. The application of this type of control is very satisfactory to replace the conventional PI controller and, even the fuzzy logic PI (FLPI) controller. The performance of the field oriented controlled DFIM drive has simulated at different operating conditions using the AFLPI controller and the obtained results are compared with FLPI controller and conventional PI controller. Accordingly, an improvement in dynamic and robustness is clearly appears in AFLPI controller simulation results compared to the others aforementioned controllers. Simulation Results are presented for the three techniques using Matlab/Simulink to prove the dynamic performances and robustness.

Real-Time Low-Cost Speed Monitoring and Control of Three-Phase Induction Motor via a Voltage/Frequency Control Approach

In this paper, a new design of a real-time low-cost speed monitoring and closed-loop control of the three-phase induction motor (IM) is proposed. The proposed solution is based on a voltage/frequency (V/F) control approach and a PI antiwindup regulator. It uses the Waijung Blockset which considerably alleviates the heaviness and the difficulty of the microcontroller’s programming task incessantly crucial for the implementation and the management of such complex applications. Indeed, it automatically generates C codes for many types of microcontrollers like the STM32F4 family, also used in this application. Furthermore, it offers a cost-effective design reducing the system components and increasing its efficiency. To prove the efficiency of the suggested design, not only simulation results are carried out for a wide range of variations in load and reference speed but also experimental assessment. The real-time closed-loop control performances are proved using the aMG SQLite Data Server via the UART port board, whereas Waijung WebPage Designer (W2D) is used for the web monitoring task. Experimental results prove the accuracy and robustness of the proposed solution.

Induction Motor Speed Control with Solar Cell Using MPPT Algorithm by Incremental Conductance Method

In the world, optimizing energy and finding new sources is important because of the increased consumption that occurred in all aspects of life. Nowadays, the world suffers of the reduction in the fossil fuel continuously. One solution to this problem is the sun and the photovoltaic (PV) cell. To get the benefits of PV, the DC/DC and DC/AC converters and inverters are combined in one set to get the better usage of these capabilities. Induction motor (IM) is the horsepower in the industry and will be considered the load in this work. The DC/DC Converter is used for control of IM speed in combination with maximum power point tracking (MPPT). Temperature and radiation change constantly over time, and the maximum energy should be tracked. This follow-up was performed using Incremental Conductance method (INC). INC is control buck-boost duty cycle converter. We get the best performance in INC technology and have less effect on the system. This algorithm uses INC of the MPPT to control half of horse power of IM. The sine pulse width modulation technique (SPWM) is used with three level inverters. Simulation on the Three-phase proves the efficiency of the suggested technique.

Model Predictive Base Direct Speed Control of Induction Motor Drive—Continuous and Finite Set Approaches

In the paper a comparative study of the two control structures based on MPC (Model Predictive Control) for an electrical drive system with an induction motor are presented. As opposed to the classical approach, in which DFOC (Direct Field Oriented Control) with four controllers is considered, in the current study only one MPC controller is utilized. The proposed control structures have a cascade free structure that consists of a vector of electromagnetic (torque, flux) and mechanical (speed) states of the system. The first investigated framework is based on the finite-set MPC. A short horizon predictive window is selected. The continuous set MPC is used in the second framework. In this case the predictive horizon contains several samples. The computational complexity of the algorithm is reduced by applying its explicit version. Different implementation aspects of both MPC structures, for instance the model used in prediction, complexity of the control algorithms, and their properties together with the noise level are analyzed. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is validated by some experimental tests.

A study on the speed control of ship propulsion induction motor using improved AFE rectifier

This paper proposes a possibility of using active front-end rectifier with the SVPWM method for induction motor speed control, which is applicable to small electric propulsion boats. The proposed method can produce a more precise sinusoidal input current waveform and a higher power factor than conventional methods. Its speed, torque, input current, DC voltage, and load current control performance are similar to or better than those of conventional methods. Through computer simulations using the PSIM program, the validity of the proposed method was verified by comparing and analyzing the characteristics of the conventional methods and the proposed method.

Virtual Instrumentation in Electrical Engineering Applications

This paper presents the applications of LabVIEW tools in the field of electrical engineering for student-centric learning such as power factor measurement, AC-to-DC converters, speed control of induction and DC motor drive. LabVIEW is a powerful graphical interface and user-friendly tool designed specifically for test, measurement and control. The power factor of resistive and inductive loads, the performance parameters of fully controlled converters and speed control of induction motor are performed in LabVIEW with DAQ device USB 6009. The speed control of a DC motor is performed with PI-speed controller using LabVIEW control and simulation toolkit and fuzzy logic controller. Measurement results are presented to validate the feasibility of system.

Improved Direct Torque Control strategy for Wide Range Speed Control of Induction Motor Drives

Induction Motor is popular option for most of the drives applications. It has simple construction but complex control. DC motor like decoupled control of induction motor drives similar to Field Oriented control is possible using Direct Torque Control (DTC) method which is very simple control strategy compared to vector control. The DTC strategy is very useful for automobile and traction applications using IM but due to use of hysteresis band controllers, DTC has problems of torque ripples, variable switching frequency and poor low speed performance. Because of these reasons, DTC is used in such applications for high speed range and not for the whole speed range. An improved DTC strategy suitable for wide range speed control is suggested in this paper which is based on a performance index calculated on the basis of what is the value of THD of stator current, value of operating speed and switching frequency. It uses new five level variable width torque hysteresis band controller and two level variable width hysteresis band flux controller along with new hybrid model for stator flux estimation. This improved strategy is designed to maintain simplicity of conventional DTC and give better performance than it. This new strategy is simulated using Matlab/Simulink

Dual Motor Control using Double Zero Sequence Injection Method in Five Leg Voltage Source Inverter

This paper presents in to Dual Motor Control using double zero sequence injection method in 5- leg voltage source inverter. As industry looking for reducing the semiconductor switching devices, like IGBT/MOSFET’s in dual induction motor control. The main reason behind reducing the switching elements to reduce the weight, cost and size of the components. As conventional inverter require six inverter legs to control two induction motors. In this proposed work five inverter legs used instead of six legs in dual motor control. With this reduced one leg, two switching devices will be reduced and one phase of the inverter leg is common between the two motors, so called five leg inverter (FLI). The main switching methodology used for inverter control is Carrier based Double Zero Sequence Injection Method (DZSM). This Double Zero Sequence Injection Method applied to FLI system is having the one common leg. One of the C Phase modulation signal added to other modulating signals of all phases of other motor respectively. A subsequent each phase degree of freedom is represented by the zero-sequence signal. This paper investigates the independent speed control of dual induction motors at different speeds connected to five leg voltage source inverter system, using MATLAB/SIMULINK Software.

Discrete Sliding Mode Speed Control of Induction Motor Using Time-Varying Switching Line

Sliding mode control (SMC) of electric drives constitutes a very popular control method for nonlinear multivariable and time-varying systems, e.g., induction motor (IM) drives. Nowadays, IM are the most popular electrical machines (EM) applied in many industrial applications as motion control devices, including electrical and hybrid vehicles. Nowadays, the control systems of EM are mostly realized using digital techniques (microprocessors and microcontrollers). Therefore, all control algorithms should be discretized or the whole control system should be designed in the discrete-time domain. This paper deals with a discrete-time sliding mode control (DSMC) for IM drives. The discrete algorithms for sliding mode control of the motor speed and rotor flux are derived in detail and next tested in simulation research. The simulation tests include the discrete nature of the power converter supplying the IM and present excellent performance of the developed control structure. To obtain the rotor speed regulation invariant to external disturbances, like load torque or inertia, especially during the reaching phase of the switching line, the discrete version of a time-varying switching line was introduced. It is shown that the assumed dynamics of the IM flux and speed is achieved and the proposed control algorithm can be realized using commonly available microcontrollers. The paper is illustrated with comprehensive simulation results for 1.5 kW IM drive, which are verified by experimental tests.

Speed Control of Induction Motor Driving a Pump Supplied by a Photovoltaic Array

The integration of renewable energies in electrical systems is a research area that is becoming more and more important. In this context, this work aims regulation of induction motor speed that drives a pump supplied by a photovoltaic array. The objective of this study is to calculate the reference speed corresponding to the maximum power supplied by the photovoltaic generator at each climate change and control the motor to achieve it. The system is formed by a boost converter and a three-phase inverter connected to a three-phase LC filter. Numerical management, including the maximum power point algorithm of type perturbs and observe to control the boost converter and sinusoidal pulse width modulation of variable frequency to control the inverter is used. The sinusoidal pulse width modulation frequency is given by the PI regulator that compares motor speed with reference speed. The reference speed is calculated through a program based on climate changes and photovoltaic maximum power. The program is implemented as a Matlab function block. The simulation results show that the PV output voltage and current converge to values corresponding to the maximum power. The motor speed follows the reference speed which approves the good functioning of the PI regulator.

Review and Investigation of Simplified Rules Fuzzy Logic Speed Controller of High Performance Induction Motor Drives

The use of Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) as a speed controller for Induction Motor (IM) drives is garnering strong researchers’ interest since it has proven to achieve superior performance compared to conventional controllers. The aim of this study is to review and investigate the design, operations, and effects of rules reduction for FLC in IM drives. Based on the literature, the most commonly used technique to design FLC Membership Functions (MFs) rule-base and control model is based on engineering skills and experienced behavioral aspects of the controlled system. Simplified fuzzy rules approaches have been introduced to reduce the number of fuzzy rules in order to realize hardware implementation. This study discusses different simplified rules methods applied to IM drives. Most of the proposed methods shared a common drawback in that they lacked systematic procedures for designing FLC rule base. Therefore, this research proposed a methodological approach to designing and simplifying the FLC rule-base for IM drives based on dynamic step response and phase plane trajectory of the second order representation of IM drives systems. The proposed method presents guidance for designing FLC rule-base based on the general dynamic step response of the controlled system. Following the proposed method procedures, a (9, 25, 49) rules size has been designed and simplified to a (5, 7, 9) rules size. The effectiveness and accuracy of the designed rules as well as the simplified rules were verified by conducting simulation analysis of IM drives using MATLAB/Simulink environment. Step speed command performance comparisons were achieved with both standard designed and simplified rules at various speed demands. The simulation results showed that the simplified rules maintain the drive performance and produced similar behavior as the standard designed rules.
