Scirpus diffusus Schuyler, sp. nov. Rhizomata usque ad 12 cm longa. Culmi foliati, usque ad 1 m alti; vaginae 1-5.5 cm longae, ore hyalino, truncato ad convexo; laminae 3-8 mm latae,5.5-34 cm longae. Inflorescentiae terminales multi-ramosae; spiculae 3-6 mm longae, 1.5-2.5 mm latae, ovatae ad ovato-lanceolatae, acutae, plerumque glomeratae (raro solitariae); squamae spicularum ellipticae, mucronatae, nigrae ad fulvae, illae medianae 1.4-2.6 mm longae. Setae 6, usque ad 2.5 mm longae, dentibus retrorsis subdensis. Stamina plerumque 3; styli trifidi; fructus obovati, apiculati, trigoni, 0.9-1.3 mm longi. Tuolumne Co.: Ackerson Meadow, Ackerson Creek, 4700 ft, Keck 5581 (CAS, DS). Scirpus diffusus closely resembles S. congdonii [CALIFORNIA: Madera Co.: Upper San Joaquin, 18 Aug 1895, J. W. Congdon (DS, type; NY, fragment of type)] but differs consistently in a few characteristics. The perianth bristles of S. diffusus rarely exceed 2.5 mm in length and are less wrinkled than those of S. congdonii, which range up to 4.2 mm in length. The bristle teeth of S. diffusus are mostly retrorse and close together2 in contrast with the mostly antrorse, more scattered, bristle teeth of S. congdonii (Fig. IB, D). Furthermore, S. diffusus generally has a more diffuse inflorescence (compare Fig. IA and IC) than S. congdonii.
