Two new species ofScirpussect.Isolepis

The new species of Scirpus, both known only from New Zealand, are S. praetextatus related to S. inundatus (R.Br.) Poir. and S. babrus related to S. merrillii (Palla) Kuk.

A New Species of Scirpus in California

Scirpus diffusus Schuyler, sp. nov. Rhizomata usque ad 12 cm longa. Culmi foliati, usque ad 1 m alti; vaginae 1-5.5 cm longae, ore hyalino, truncato ad convexo; laminae 3-8 mm latae,5.5-34 cm longae. Inflorescentiae terminales multi-ramosae; spiculae 3-6 mm longae, 1.5-2.5 mm latae, ovatae ad ovato-lanceolatae, acutae, plerumque glomeratae (raro solitariae); squamae spicularum ellipticae, mucronatae, nigrae ad fulvae, illae medianae 1.4-2.6 mm longae. Setae 6, usque ad 2.5 mm longae, dentibus retrorsis subdensis. Stamina plerumque 3; styli trifidi; fructus obovati, apiculati, trigoni, 0.9-1.3 mm longi. Tuolumne Co.: Ackerson Meadow, Ackerson Creek, 4700 ft, Keck 5581 (CAS, DS). Scirpus diffusus closely resembles S. congdonii [CALIFORNIA: Madera Co.: Upper San Joaquin, 18 Aug 1895, J. W. Congdon (DS, type; NY, fragment of type)] but differs consistently in a few characteristics. The perianth bristles of S. diffusus rarely exceed 2.5 mm in length and are less wrinkled than those of S. congdonii, which range up to 4.2 mm in length. The bristle teeth of S. diffusus are mostly retrorse and close together2 in contrast with the mostly antrorse, more scattered, bristle teeth of S. congdonii (Fig. IB, D). Furthermore, S. diffusus generally has a more diffuse inflorescence (compare Fig. IA and IC) than S. congdonii. In California, both S. diffusus and S. congdonii grow primarily in the Sierra Nevada and higher elevations northward in the state, although there are differences

THE GENUS SCIRPUS LINN.: SOME NORTH AMERICAN APHYLLOID SPECIES

Some North American aphylloid species of Scirpus are discussed in detail with particular emphasis on Asiatic–American relationships. Beetle, in 1947, recognized 27 species in this group; 15 of his species examined in the present treatment are reduced to 8. The following new combinations are proposed: S. juncoides var. Williamsii, S. Smithii var. leiocarpus, S. supinus var. saximontanus, S. lacustris ssp. validus, S. lacustris ssp. validus var. luxurians, S. subterminalis var. cylindricus, S. subterminalis ssp. nipponicus, and S. maritimus f. cymosus.

Annotated List of Original Descriptions in Scirpus

The followiing list contains 1,672 names in the genus Scirpus (Cyperaceae) of which 1,350 are specific and 322 are subspecific. The present compilation was undertaken for the following reasons: (a) the list presents the genus in more usable form, more up to date, and more complete than it can be found elsewhere; (b) it makes more intelligible much early botanical literature especially to students not specializing in the Cyperaceae; (c) it will contribute to the stability of the nomenclature in the natural genera of the Cyperaceae. Although these advantages may result, it is recognized that the list has certain limitations due (1) to lack of herbarium material, particularly African species, making it impossible to work out the exact status of all names; (2) poorly defined sections for much Old World material making it impossible to give section names for all species; (3) lack of familiarity with some of the genera into which the synonyms fall making the placement of names in other genera only indicative of their approximate location and not necessarily final; (4) previous inadequate indexing of, and the scattered unpredictable locations of subspecific names and combinations making it probable that these are incompletely listed. Published combinations in more than 50 genera either fall into the synonymy of Scirpus species, or have names in Scirpus in their synonymy. All but one of the genera may be found in the family Cyperaceae (S. stygius Juncus). The names in Isolepis have been treated in Amer. Midi. Nat. 34: 523-734. 1945. 279 names listed are referable to Eleocharis. Other genera, commonly accepted as valid, which are involved include Androcoma, Bulbo5tylis, Carex, Cyperus, Desmoschoenus, Eriophorum, Ficinia, F;mbristylis, Hemicarpha, Hypolytrum, Lipocarpha, Mariscus, Nomochloa, Rynchospora, and Schoenus.

Chromosome Studies in the Cyperaceae, With Special Reference to Scirpus

1. Aneuploidy is present in American species of Scirpus. 2. The chromosome numbers found range as follows: 18, 20, 21, 25-30, 28, 33, 34, 38, 39, 50-64, 53-55, 55, 55-57. 3. Conditions similar to that found in known hybrids have been discovered. 4. The seemingly hybrid conditions are to be correlated with taxonomic variability and polymorphy. 5. The interpretations of Heilborn cannot be applied to the species investigated. 6. Hybridization is offered as a probable explanation of the aneuploidy found.
