The geographic information systems (GIS) database complementing the Walnut Gulch Experimental Watershed (WGEW) special section papers in this issue of Water Resources Research is described. Spatial data layers discussed here will be especially useful to modelers interested in simulating the spatial and temporal characteristics of rainfall, runoff, erosion, and sedimentation processes on the WGEW. All data are available as either images or individual GIS data layers (vector or raster format) via the U.S. Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service Southwest Watershed Research Center at http://www.tucson.ars.ag.gov/dap/. Standard metadata are provided with attending projection information and restrictions on use.

Restoration Ecology and Invasive Riparian Plants: An Introduction to the Special Section on Tamarix spp. in Western North America

Abstract River systems around the world are subject to various perturbations, including the colonization and spread of non‐native species in riparian zones. Riparian resource managers are commonly engaged in efforts to control problematic non‐native species and restore native habitats. In western North America, small Eurasian trees or shrubs in the genus Tamarix occupy hundreds of thousands of hectares of riparian lands, and are the targets of substantial and costly control efforts and associated restoration activities. Still, significant information gaps exist regarding approaches used in control and restoration efforts and their effects on riparian ecosystems. In this special section of papers, eight articles address various aspects of control and restoration associated with Tamarix spp. These include articles focused on planning restoration and revegetation; a synthetic analysis of past restoration efforts; and several specific research endeavors examining plant responses, water use, and various wildlife responses (including birds, butterflies, and lizards). These articles represent important additions to the Tamarix spp. literature and contain many lessons and insights that should be transferable to other analogous situations in river systems globally.

Introduction to special section on Hydrologic Synthesis

The Hydrological Synthesis special section presents synthesis topics that have the potential to revolutionize hydrological sciences in a manner needed to meet critical water challenges that we now face. The special section also highlights topics that are important and exciting enough to compel researchers to engage in collaborative synthesis activities. This introductory paper provides a brief overview of nine papers that are included in this special section, which discuss the synthesis of tools, data, concepts, theories, or approaches across disciplines and scales. The wide range of topics that are explored include groundwater quality, river restoration, water management, nitrogen cycling, and Earth surface dynamics. Collectively, the special section papers illustrate that the challenge to deal effectively with complex water problems is not purely a scientific, technological, or socioeconomic one; it is instead a complex, 21st century problem that requires coordinated synthesis.

We plan to have invited and contributed discussion on the paper “Statistical Research: Some Advice for Beginners” by Hamada and Sitter (page TKKK of this issue) for the August 2004 issue. In addition, we plan a paper and discussion on statistical aspects of the controversialBCS (Bowl ChampionshipSystem) ranking methodologyused to determine the best American college football teams. Industrial actuator benchmark for fault detection and isolation

Feedback control systems are vulnerable to faults within the control loop, because feedback actions may cause abrupt responses and process damage when faults occur. Such faults can be detected by model-based methods for fault detection and isolation (FDI) but research results have not been widely accepted in industry. One reason has been a scarcity of realistic examples for testing FDI methods against industrial systems. These special section papers focus on a common benchmark example, an electro-mechanical position servo, used in speed control of large diesel engines. The result is a platform for comparison of FDI methods and a gathering together of design experience on a simple, yet very realistic, industrial example. This paper introduces the benchmark problem, overviews the FDI methods used within the papers and discusses the results.

The author introduces the Special Section papers to follow, pointing out that two new issues have attached themselves to the issue of the physical safety and civil dignity of human subjects. One new issue is an emphatically legal defense of the concept of subjects' rights; the other is the evolution of political characterizations and caricatures of many forms of research.
