Predicting temporal variation in zooplankton beta diversity is challenging.

Beta diversity, the spatial variation in species composition, has been related to different explanatory variables, including environmental heterogeneity, productivity and connectivity. Using a long-term time series of zooplankton data collected over 62 months in a tropical reservoir (Ribeirão das Lajes Reservoir, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil), we tested whether beta diversity (as measured across six sites distributed along the main axis of the reservoir) was correlated with environmental heterogeneity (spatial environmental variation in a given month), chlorophyll-a concentration (a surrogate for productivity) and water level. We did not found evidence for the role of these predictors, suggesting the need to reevaluate predictions or at least to search for better surrogates of the processes that hypothetically control beta diversity variation. However, beta diversity declined over time, which is consistent with the process of biotic homogenization, a worldwide cause of concern.

Assessing temporal and spatial variability of phytoplankton composition in a large reservoir in the Brazilian northeastern region under intense drought conditions

The present study was carried out in Castanhão Reservoir, a large aquatic system in the Brazilian semi-arid region that serves multiples uses as water drinking supply and intensive fish-cage aquaculture site. In order to understand the effects of environmental conditions on the spatial and temporal variability of the phytoplankton functional groups (FG) and the main ‘characterizing taxa’, sub-superficial water samples were collected from March 2012 to August 2013, a period distinguished by the continuous drop in reservoir volume due to rainfall shortage. Eighteen functional groups and 102 total phytoplankton taxa were found in the Castanhão reservoir during the study. No significant differences were observed relative to spatial variation of total phytoplankton composition throughout the reservoir (PERMANOVA, P>0.05). On the other hand, according to cluster analysis results, three temporal phases have been identified (Similarity Profile, P<0.05), based on 102 phytoplankton taxa. The ‘characterizing taxa’ was found using the Similarity Percentage procedure (cut-off 90%), being thus defined as those taxa that contributed the most to the similarity within each temporal phase. Nineteen ‘characterizing taxa’ described the Castanhão reservoir, with predominance of those typical of mixing and turbidity conditions. Cyanobacteria dominated through the three temporal phases. According to the redundancy analysis, nutrient availability and water transparency were found to influence the phytoplankton temporal dynamics. The phase I (rainy season) was most represented by Planktolyngbya minor/Pl. limnetica (FG = S1), which reached best performance under strongly decreased phosphate-P concentrations and low water transparency. In phase II (dry season), Romeria victoriae (FG = ?) outcompeted other cyanobacteria probably due the increase in water transparency and decrease in ammonium-N. Finally, in phase III (rainy season) the decrease of water transparency triggered a recovery of shade-adapted cyanobacteria, but at this time mostly represented by Pseudanabaena limnetica (FG = S1). Phase III was also distinctive from the other ones by the highest Nitrate-N and phosphate-P concentrations related to thermocline disruption, which favored an increase in total phytoplankton biomass recorded by the augment of green algae density (FGs = X1, J and F). We concluded that the temporal dynamics of phytoplankton composition was associated to environmental changes in Castanhão Reservoir from 2012 to 2013, which were driven by seasonal climate variation from region (rainy/dry seasons), as well as, by the reduction in reservoir volume that resulted in the disruption of the thermocline, water mixing and an increase in inorganic P and N.

Occurrences of organophosphorus esters and phthalates in the microplastics from the coastal beaches in north China

Chemical pollution in the microplastics has been concerned worldwide as pollutants might potentially transfer from the environment to living organisms via plastics. Here, we investigate organophosphorus esters (OPEs) and phthalic acid esters (PAEs) in the beached microplastics collected from 28 coastal beaches of the Bohai and Yellow Sea in north China. The analyzed microplastics included polyethylene (PE) pellets and fragments, polypropylene (PP) flakes and fragments and polystyrene (PS) foams. The tris-(2-chloroethyl)-phosphate (TCEP), tris (1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TCPP) and di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) were the three predominant compounds found overall. The maximum Σ4 OPEs concentration was 84,595.9ngg−1, almost three orders of magnitude higher than the maximum Σ9 PAEs concentration. The PP flakes and PS foams contained the highest concentrations of the additives in contrast to the PE pellets which contained the lowest. The high concentration level of carcinogenic chlorinated OPEs and DEHP with endocrine disrupting effects implied the suggested potential hazards to coastal organisms. Spatial differences and compositional variation of the additives among the different microplastics suggests different origins and residence times in the coastal environment. This indicates that the characteristics of chemical additives might be a useful approach when tracing sources of microplastics in the environment.

Spatial and Temporal Dynamics of Potentially Toxic Cyanobacteria in the Riverine Region of a Temperate Estuarine System Altered by Weirs

The effects of weirs on fish and other biological communities have garnered considerable study, whereas the effects of weirs on community composition of toxic cyanobacteria have not yet been well documented. In this study, temporal and spatial variations in species composition and the abundance of potentially toxic cyanobacteria were investigated in the riverine regions of the temperate Youngsan River estuary, where two weirs have recently been constructed. Four stations were sampled 0.5 m below the surface monthly along the channel of the upper river from May 2014 to April 2015 to explore cyanobacterial composition and abundance, while physicochemical and biological parameters were measured to elucidate possible mechanisms controlling these dynamics. Two stations were located upstream at free-flowing sites, and the other stations were located downstream at impounded sites near the weirs. Twenty-eight cyanobacterial species were identified, seven of which were potentially toxic: Microcystis sp., M. aeruginosa, M. flos-aquae, Dolichospermum sp., Aphanocapsa sp., Oscillatoria sp. and Phormidium sp. Microcystis sp. was the most abundant in June 2014 at the lowest station near the weir. Meanwhile, Phormidium sp. occurred at low abundance throughout the study period, except during the winter months, when its abundance was elevated. The interactive forward selection method highlighted dissolved inorganic nitrogen and zooplankton abundance as explanatory variables for this observed variation, but their effects on cyanobacterial growth are unclear. However, temperature was the major determinant for the temporal variation in cyanobacterial populations. Cluster analysis showed that the downstream stations near the weirs had a high similarity of potentially toxic cyanobacteria. Significantly higher abundance, especially of Microcystis sp., was also recorded at the impounded sites suggesting that the presence of weirs might affect variations in toxic cyanobacterial communities.

Spatial variation of stable isotopic composition in surface waters of the Huai River basin, China and the regional hydrological implication

AbstractOxygen (δ18O) and hydrogen (δD) stable isotopes in the surface waters of the Huai River basin were analyzed in this study. Results indicated the northern waters had higher δ18O and δD than the southern waters, the water δ18O and δD increased along the water flow directions. These variations mostly resulted from the spatial differences of precipitation and evaporation. Comparing with published different continents' river water δ18O data, this study suggests that evaporation effect is a more plausible interpretation than altitude effect as the cause of δ18O increasing from upriver to downriver waters. This region's local surface water line (LSWL, δD = 5.36δ18O − 18.39; r2 = 0.84) represents one of the first presented LSWLs in eastern China. The correlation between d-excess and δ18O demonstrates this region is dominated by the Pacific oceanic moisture masses in summer. Comparing the various LSWLs from eastern China and eastern United States river waters, this study proposes a hypothesis that the water LSWLs slopes of lower latitude regions may be less than those of higher latitude regions within similar topographic areas. This hypothesis may be tested in other geographically comparable coupled areas in the world if corresponding large-scale data can be found.

Chemical variations within and between the clasts, and the matrix of the Abee enstatite chondrite suggest an impact-based differentiation mechanism

Abee is an enstatite chondrite breccia dominantly composed of kamacite, enstatite, silica, plagioclase, troilite and niningerite. Clasts are up to 220 mm long and vary in shape from angular to rounded. Some clasts are zoned with kamacite-enriched rims that follow the edge of the clast. Spatial compositional variations were examined in a small block to find out more about the petrological processes that produced this rock, particularly the relationship between the clasts, the matrix and the cores/rims of the zoned clasts. Compositional maps produced using a focussed-beam XRF were segmented into clasts and matrix, and rims and cores where possible. Compositions of most clasts, matrix and rim/cores define a simple, linear trend on simple variation diagrams. If it is assumed that all components were derived from an original homogeneous composition then the variation can be explained either by addition of kamacite or by loss of all other phases. Within this overall compositional variation the kamacite content generally increases as follows: matrix < large homogeneous clasts ≈ zoned clast cores < small homogeneous clasts ≈ zoned clast rims. Production of diversity by addition of kamacite to clasts and rim seems to require a complex history as the source cannot have been the current matrix. It is also difficult to produce the observed chemical variations and zoning by partial melting. However, differentiation by removal of all non-metallic phases may result from repeated impacts: Shock waves would deform kamacite whilst fracturing all other phases. The broken grains would then migrate towards the surface of the clasts where they would spall off into the matrix. This process would also lead to the observed rounding of some clasts. We propose that this shock-differentiation process be called ‘smithing’, as it resembles the ancient process of iron refining.

Molecular Simulations Suggest a Force-Dependent Mechanism of Vinculin Activation

Focal adhesions are dynamic constructs at the leading edge of migrating cells, linking them to the extracellular matrix and enabling force sensing and transmission. The lifecycle of a focal adhesion is a highly coordinated process involving spatial and temporal variations of protein composition, interaction, and cellular tension. The assembly of focal adhesions requires the recruitment and activation of vinculin. Vinculin is present in the cytoplasm in an autoinhibited conformation in which its tail is held pincerlike by its head domains, further stabilized by two high-affinity head-tail interfaces. Vinculin has binding sites for talin and F-actin, but effective binding requires vinculin activation to release its head-tail associations. In migrating cells, it has been shown that the locations of vinculin activation coincide with areas of high cellular tension, and that the highest recorded tensions across vinculin are associated with adhesion assembly. Here, we use a structure-based model to investigate vinculin activation by talin modulated by tensile force generated by transient associations with F-actin. We show that vinculin activation may proceed from an intermediate state stabilized by partial talin-vinculin association. There is a low-force regime and a high-force regime where vinculin activation is dominated by two different pathways with distinct responses to force. Specifically, at zero or low forces, vinculin activation requires substantial destabilization of the main head-tail interface, which is rigid and undergoes very limited fluctuations, despite the other being relatively flexible. This pathway is not significantly affected by force; instead, higher forces favor an alternative pathway, which seeks to release the vinculin tail from its pincerlike head domains before destabilizing the head-tail interfaces. This pathway has a force-sensitive activation barrier and is significantly accelerated by force. Experimental data of vinculin during various stages of the focal adhesion lifecycle are consistent with the proposed force-regulated activation pathway.

Polychaete assemblage driven by substrate composition along the coastal waters of the South-eastern Arabian Sea

The spatial variation in polychaete community structure and sediment composition was studied along the coastal waters of the South-eastern Arabian Sea. Sampling was conducted during the pre-monsoon season (2011–2014) in <100 m water depth with the help of van Veen grab. We identified a total of 71 polychaetes species belonging to 16 families. Cluster analysis showed clear separation based on the species distribution. Canonical Corresponding Analysis (CCA) revealed the close dependence of polychaete species to the sediment texture (fine sand & silty clay). The first assemblage was in the South Region (SR) as the sediment texture between Trivandrum, Cochin and Mangalore were characterized by fine sand. The second species assemblage was observed in the Central Region (CR) at Karwar and Goa where the substrate in this area was characterized by a moderate content of silt. The third assemblage was in the North Region (NR) between Ratnagiri and Mumbai and the sediment in this region was characterized by high content of silt and clay. The SIMPER analysis showed regional species assemblage dominated by Cossura delta (13.48% in the NR), whereas Aphelochaeta multifilis (10.55%) dominated in the SR. Increased richness and diversity patterns in the SR were in contrast with NR. The study suggests that the distinct polychaete assemblages in the region were may be influenced by sediment texture pattern. Therefore, long-term studies could be directed towards the demographic, behavioural, and ecological responses of species assemblages.

Settlement Patterns of Corals and other Benthos on Reefs with Divergent Environments and Disturbances Histories around the Northeastern Arabian Peninsula

Larval supply is a principal factor determining the establishment, structure, and diversity of sessile benthic assemblages on coral reefs. Benthic reef communities in north-eastern Arabia have been subject to recurrent disturbances in recent years, and subsequent recovery will be, in part, driven by variation in the supply of available colonists. Using settlement tiles deployed seasonally over one year at eight sites encompassing three environmentally divergent regions (southern Arabian Gulf, the Musandam Peninsula in the Strait of Hormuz, and the Sea of Oman) we assessed spatial and seasonal variability in settlement of benthic reef organisms. There was strong spatial variation in composition of new colonists among regions, mainly driven by the high abundance of coralline algae in the Arabian Gulf, colonial ascidians on the Musandam Peninsula and barnacles in the Sea of Oman. Seasonal differences in composition of new colonists were less important than regional differences, with seasonal variation in settlement not consistent among regions. The number of corals settling to the tiles was low compared to those reported for other regions, with mean densities ranging from 0 corals m-2 yr-1 in the Sea of Oman to 30 (± 0.6 SE) and 38 (± 0.5 SE) in Musandam and the Arabian Gulf, respectively. Peak coral settlement abundance in the Gulf occurred in summer and autumn (5 – 8 spat m-2) and in Musandam in spring (7 spat m-2). This work provides the first record of large-scale spatial and seasonal patterns of settlement in north-eastern Arabia and provides valuable information on the supply of settlers available to recolonize heavily disturbed reefs in this region. The extremely low rates of coral settlement suggest that these marginal reefs are likely to be extremely slow to recover from ongoing and future disturbances.

Redistribution of soil metals and organic carbon via lateral flowpaths at the catchment scale in a glaciated upland setting

Emerging evidence shows that interactions between soils and subsurface flow paths contribute to spatial variations in stream water chemistry in headwater catchments. However, few have yet attempted to quantify chemical variations in soils at catchment and hillslope scales. Watershed 3 (WS3) at Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, New Hampshire, USA, was studied in order to better understand pedogenesis and its relationship to subsurface water dynamics. In WS3, 99 soil profiles were described, sampled by horizon, and assigned to a hydropedologic unit (HPU), a functional classification previously developed using landscape and morphological metrics which corresponded with distinct water table regimes. Soil samples were extracted with 1) citrate-dithionite (d) and analyzed for Fed and Mnd; and 2) acid ammonium oxalate (o) and analyzed for Alo, Feo and the rare earth elements Lao, Ceo, and Pro. Total organic C was also measured. These elements were redistributed via vertical and lateral podzolization. Typical (horizontally layered) podzols developed in the majority of the catchment due to predominantly vertical, unsaturated flow. However, lateral flow produced four other podzol types with distinct chemistry; thicker spodic horizons of laterally accumulating soils generally reflected larger pools of trace metals and subsoil organic C. The spatial distribution of positive cerium-anomalies (Ce/Ce*) in soil profiles proved to be a consistent hydropedologic indicator of lateral flow and seasonally high water table in three hillslopes. Despite occasional high water table in some of the HPUs, they were not hydric soils and were distinct from wetter podzols of coastal plains due to their high Fe content. This study suggests that vertical and lateral spatial variation in soil chemical composition, including the complexity of Ce distribution, as it relates to subsurface water dynamics should be considered when studying or predicting catchment scale functions such as stream solute export and biogeochemical processes.

Mantle source heterogeneity of the Early Jurassic basalt of eastern North America

One of the defining characteristics of the basaltic rocks from the Early Jurassic Eastern North America (ENA) sub-province of the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province (CAMP) is the systematic compositional variation from South to North. Moreover, the tectono-thermal regime of the CAMP is debated as it demonstrates geological and structural characteristics (size, radial dyke pattern) that are commonly associated with mantle plume-derived mafic continental large igneous provinces but is considered to be unrelated to a plume. Mantle potential temperature (T P) estimates of the northern-most CAMP flood basalts (North Mountain basalt, Fundy Basin) indicate that they were likely produced under a thermal regime (T P ≈ 1450 °C) that is closer to ambient mantle (T P ≈ 1400 °C) conditions and are indistinguishable from other regions of the ENA sub-province (T Psouth = 1320–1490 °C, T Pnorth = 1390–1480 °C). The regional mantle potential temperatures are consistent along the 3000-km-long ENA sub-province suggesting that the CAMP was unlikely to be generated by a mantle plume. Furthermore, the mantle potential temperature calculation using the rocks from the Northern Appalachians favors an Fe-rich mantle (FeOt = 8.6 wt %) source, whereas the rocks from the South Appalachians favor a less Fe-rich (FeOt = 8.3 wt %) source. The results indicate that the spatial-compositional variation of the ENA basaltic rocks is likely related to differing amounts of melting of mantle sources that reflect the uniqueness of their regional accreted terranes (Carolinia and West Avalonia) and their post-accretion, pre-rift structural histories.

Fertilization decreases compositional variation of paddy bacterial community across geographical gradient

Fertilization is one of the most common agricultural practices to meet an increasing global demand for food products. Few investigations have been reported on spatial variation of microbial community composition in response to fertilizations in agroecosystems at a large scale. To improve the related understandings, we have evaluated the taxonomic and phylogenetic diversities of bacterial taxa in response to three fertilization strategies in six paddy experiment sites spanning across subtropical China. We found the large-scale compositional variation of paddy bacterial community is shaped by both geographic location and environmental selection, and the former is the dominant factor. The slopes of distance-decay relationships (DDR) are flattened by fertilizations, NPK (mineral NPK fertilizers) and OM (mineral NPK fertilizers plus organic amendments) when compared to Control. A flattened DDR implies that bacterial community composition is greatly homogenized by fertilizations in paddies. It is also inferred that fertilization decreases sensitivity of bacterial community to geographic and environmental factors, which is speculated to be beneficial for agroecosystem stability and yield sustainability. Results from this investigation correlate microscopic agroecosystem with macroscopic agricultural practices.

Control of abusive water addition to Octopus vulgaris with non-destructive methods.

Abusive water addition to octopus has evidenced the need for quick non-destructive methods for product qualification in the industry and control of fresh commercial products in markets. Electric conductivity (EC)/pH and dielectric property measurements were selected to detect water uptake in octopus. A significant EC decrease was determined after soaking octopus in freshwater for 4 h. EC reflected the water uptake of octopus and the correspondent concentration decrease of available ions in the interstitial fluid. Significant correlations were determined between octopus water uptake, EC (R = -0.940) and moisture/protein (M/P) ratio (R = 0.923) changes. Seasonal and spatial variation in proximate composition did not introduce any uncertainty in EC discrimination of freshwater tampering. Immersion in 5 g L-1 sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP) increased EC to a value similar to control octopus. EC false negatives resulting from the use of additives (STPP and citric acid) were eliminated with the additional determination of pH. Octopus soaked in freshwater, STPP and citric acid can also be clearly discriminated from untreated samples (control) and also from frozen (thawed) ones using the dielectric properties. No significant differences in the dielectric property scores were found between octopus sizes or geographical locations. Simultaneous EC/pH or dielectric property measurements can be used in a handheld device for non-destructive water addition detection in octopus. M/P ratio can be used as a reference destructive method. © 2017 Society of Chemical Industry.

Spatial Variation and Environmental Significance of δ18O and δD Isotope Composition in Xijiang River

The H and O isotope composition of the Xijiang water was investigated on 54 samples collected from the mainstreams and main tributaries in June 2014 and January 2015.It was found that in the Xijiang river, there was a remarkable linear relationship between δ18 O and δD. This relationship was more significant in the dry season. In both seasons, the 18 O and D values distributed along the meteoric water line, which indicated that precipitation was the source of the Xijiang River. Due to the direct water recharge through karst forms (i.e. sinkholes, vertical shaft and funnel) to the underground river, the d-excess value was higher in the rainy season. While during the dry season, water recharge came from the storage in fissures and pores. Affected by altitude and evaporation effect, along the mainstream Hongshui River-Xunjiang and tributary Youjiang-Yujiang reach, the δ18 O and δD values were gradually approaching positive value in general. However, along the short tributary Guijiang reach, the altitude difference was not dramatic, and the discharge was less, the same phenomenon was not observed. By establishing a linear regression model between δ18 O and altitude, it revealed that the change rate of Xijiang water with altitude was -0.44‰·(100 m)-1 in the rainy season, and -0.45‰·(100 m)-1 in the dry season. The result reflected the height effect of the precipitation, which has a considerable meaning for the study of hydrological cycle in a river basin.

Biogeography of Amazon birds: rivers limit species composition, but not areas of endemism

Amazonian rivers are usually suggested as dispersal barriers, limiting biogeographic units. This is evident in a widely accepted Areas of Endemism (AoEs) hypothesis proposed for Amazonian birds. We empirically test this hypothesis based on quantitative analyses of species distribution. We compiled a database of bird species and subspecies distribution records, and used this dataset to identify AoEs through three different methods. Our results show that the currently accepted Amazonian AoEs are not consistent with areas identified, which were generally congruent among datasets and methods. Some Amazonian rivers represent limits of AoEs, but these areas are not congruent with those previously proposed. However, spatial variation in species composition is correlated with largest Amazonian rivers. Overall, the previously proposed Amazonian AoEs are not consistent with the evidence from bird distribution. However, the fact that major rivers coincide with breaks in species composition suggest they can act as dispersal barriers, though not necessarily for all bird taxa. This scenario indicates a more complex picture of the Amazonian bird distribution than previously imagined.

Intra- and interspecific similarity in species composition of helminth communities in two closely-related rodents from South Africa

To reveal factors responsible for spatial variation in parasite community composition we studied patterns of similarity in helminth species composition in two closely-related rodents (Rhabdomys pumilio and Rhabdomys dilectus) that differ in their social and spatial behaviour and live under different environmental conditions across 20 localities in South Africa. We asked whether the two hosts harbour similar assemblages, whether these are more dissimilar between than within hosts and if host social structure, behaviour or environment affects similarity patterns in helminth infracommunities within and among localities. We also investigated whether similarity in species composition of helminth component communities decreases with an increase of geographic distance between host populations. We found that the pattern of space use by the hosts rather than their social behaviour promotes differences in helminth species composition between host species as well as among host populations from different localities. The rate of distance decay of similarity in species composition of helminth component communities differed between the two hosts due to difference in the degree of environmental variation across their geographic ranges. We conclude that patterns of spatial variation in helminth species composition are driven mainly by host spatial behaviour and, to a lesser extent, by environment-associated factors.

Sedimentary analysis and magnetic properties of Lake Anónima, Vega Island

AbstractDuring the summer Lake Anónima experiences important changes in salinity and lake level fluctuations. Physicochemical data and field observations indicate that evaporative processes are dominant and that the water inflow is mainly provided by snow meltwater and streams. A multiproxy analysis of data from lake bottom sediments suggests that the main surface stream located south-west of the lake controls the clastic input and the spatial variation of sediment composition. Through an integrated analysis (magnetic, X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy studies) magnetite and greigite minerals were identified in these lake sediments. Such ferrimagnetic minerals have ultra-fine grain sizes (&lt;0.1 μm). Magnetic parameters and non-magnetic variables analysed by multivariate statistics reveal significant differences between silt facies (e.g. mass-specific susceptibility χ=109.6×10-8 m3 kg-1, remanent coercivity Hcr=49.2 mT and total organic carbon (TOC)=1.11%) and sand facies (e.g. χ=82.1×10-8 m3 kg-1, Hcr=44.7 mT and TOC=0.70%), and four recent depositional sub-environments were identified and characterized in Lake Anónima. This multiparameter analysis contributes to the understanding of present-day lacustrine dynamic and sedimentary processes. Lake Anónima may provide a useful analogue for the interpretation of other lacustrine basins in the Antarctic region.

Spatial and temporal variations of nutrients composition and structure in the main estuaries of Jiaozhou Bay

Spatiotemporal distribution of nutrients were investigated in the main estuaries of Jiaozhou Bay in January, April, June, August, October and December, 2016, and the relationships between nutrients and temperature, salinity, pH and DO were analyzed as well. Results showed that, the main estuaries of Jiaozhou Bay total dissolved nitrogen (TN) showed a time trend of decreasing after the first increasing, small changes of TN content in each estuarine water body, organic nitrogen (DON) was the main component of TN, its relative content was about 58.6-98.5%. NH4+-N was the main component of inorganic nitrogen (DIN) in most estuaries, followed by NO3− - N, NO22− - N lowest relative content. The content of total dissolved phosphorus (TP) was low (averaged 0.15 mg/L), mainly showed a higher spring and summer, autumn and winter low time trends, the change of TP content in the water body of the estuary was also small, the relative content of inorganic phosphorus (DIP) in most estuaries was more than organic phosphorus (DOP). Temperature, salinity, pH and DO with different forms of nutrient analysis showed that there are strong primary productivity and microbial regeneration activities in the study area, environmental factors affected the microbial production activities in estuarine water affecting the spatial and temporal changes in nutrient composition and structure.

Spatial patterns of phytoplankton composition and upper-ocean biogeochemistry do not follow carbonate chemistry gradients in north-west European Shelf seas

A key difficulty in ocean acidification research is to predict its impact after physiological, phenotypic, and genotypic adaptation has had time to take place. Observational datasets can be a useful tool in addressing this issue. During a cruise in June–July 2011, measurements of upper-ocean biogeochemical variables, climatically active gases and plankton community composition were collected from northwestern European seas. We used various multivariate statistical techniques to assess the relative influences of carbonate chemistry and other environmental factors on these response variables. We found that the spatial patterns in plankton communities were driven more by nutrient availability and physical variables than by carbonate chemistry. The best subset of variables able to account for phytoplankton community structure was the euphotic zone depth, silicic acid availability, mixed layer average irradiance, and nitrate concentration (59% of variance explained). The spatial variations in phytoplankton and coccolithophores species composition were both found to be more strongly associated with nutrients and physical variables than carbonate chemistry, with the latter only explaining 14 and 9% of the variance, respectively. The plankton community composition and contribution of calcifying organisms was not observed to change under lower calcite saturation state (Ω) conditions, although no regions of undersaturation (Ω &amp;lt; 1) were encountered during the cruise. Carbonate chemistry played a more prominent, but still secondary, role in determining dinoflagellate and diatom assemblage composition (20 and 13% of total variance explained, respectively). Nutrient and physical variables also explained more of the spatial variations of most climatically active gases and selected biogeochemical response variables, although some also appeared to be influenced by carbonate chemistry. This observational study has demonstrated that ocean acidification research needs to be set in context with other environmental forcing variables to fully appreciate the primary, or indeed secondary, role that increasing fugacity of carbon dioxide has on biological communities and associated biogeochemical rates.

Drivers of coastal bacterioplankton community diversity and structure along a nutrient gradient in the East China Sea

Anthropogenic nutrient discharge poses widespread threats to coastal ecosystems and has increased environmental gradients from coast to sea. Bacterioplankton play crucial roles in coastal biogeochemical cycling, and a variety of factors affect bacterial community diversity and structure. We used 16S rRNA gene pyrosequencing to investigate the spatial variation in bacterial community composition (BCC) across five sites on a coast-offshore gradient in the East China Sea. Overall, bacterial alpha-diversity did not differ across sites, except that richness and phylogenetic diversity were lower in the offshore sites, and the highest alpha-diversity was found in the most landward site, with Chl-a being the main factor. BCCs generally clustered into coastal and offshore groups. Chl-a explained 12.3% of the variation in BCCs, more than that explained by either the physicochemical (5.7%) or spatial (8.5%) variables. Nutrients (particularly nitrate and phosphate), along with phytoplankton abundance, were more important than other physicochemical factors, co-explaining 20.0% of the variation in BCCs. Additionally, a series of discriminant families (primarily affiliated with Gammaproteobacteria and Alphaproteobacteria), whose relative abundances correlated with Chl-a, DIN, and phosphate concentrations, were identified, implying their potential to indicate phytoplankton blooms and nutrient enrichment in this marine ecosystem. This study provides insight into bacterioplankton response patterns along a coast-offshore gradient, with phytoplankton abundance increasing in the offshore sites. Time-series sampling across multiple transects should be performed to determine the seasonal and spatial patterns in bacterial diversity and community structure along this gradient.
