Weight status underestimation and weight management goals among adults in the rural South of the United States.

To examine factors associated with weight status underestimation and the relationship between weight status underestimation and weight loss as a weight management goal among adults living in the rural South. An anonymous survey was distributed at six primary care clinics and two churches in rural, South Carolina counties. Weight status underestimation was determined based on the difference between perceived weight status using standard body mass index (BMI) categories (underweight, normal weight, overweight, and obese) and BMI category from self-reported height and weight. Participants reported whether their weight management goal was to lose, maintain, or gain weight. Chi-square and binary logistic regressions were used for data analysis. A total of 185 respondents (76% female) at least partially completed the survey. Nearly 60% underestimated their weight status. Increasing BMI was associated with higher odds of weight status underestimation (OR: 1.10, 95%: 1.04, 1.15) and perceptions of being in fair or poor health was associated with lower odds of weight status underestimation relative to perceiving health as good or better (OR: 0.21, 95% CI: 0.06, 0.66). Among those with overweight and obesity, the association between underestimating weight status and having weight loss as a weight management goal was strong but not statistically significant (OR: 0.20, 95% CI: 0.04, 1.04). Underestimating weight status was common among adults in the rural US South and was related to BMI and health status. Research is needed to determine if improving the accuracy of weight perceptions can promote weight management in the rural South.

Peripartum Cardiomyopathy and Social Vulnerability: An Epidemiological Analysis of Mortality Outcomes.

Peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) outcomes have been previously linked to demographic and social factors. The social vulnerability index (SVI) is a measure of social vulnerability in the United States. We explored PPCM disparities and the impact of SVI on PPCM mortality. Mortality from 1999 to 2020, SVI, and demographic data were obtained from CDC databases. County-specific SVI rankings were linked to PPCM age-adjusted mortality rates (AAMRs), allowing for a comparative analysis of AAMRs across both cumulative populations and subpopulations to identify disparities. All US counties were then stratified into low- and high-SVI groups, facilitating comparison of SVI rankings by estimation of excess-deaths per 1 000 000 person-years attributable to greater social vulnerability and rate ratios (RR) through univariable Poisson regression. We identified a total of 1026 deaths related to PPCM between 1999 and 2020. Overall AAMR increased from 0.180 in 1999 to 0.326 in 2020. Black populations (AAMR: 1.081) and Southern US counties (AAMR: 0.444) had the highest AAMRs compared with other racial and US census groups, respectively. Higher SVI accounted for 0.172 excess deaths per 1 000 000 person-years (RR=1.800). Among Black and White populations, higher SVI also accounted for 0.248 and 0.071 excess deaths per 1 000 000 person-years, respectively. Similar impacts of greater social vulnerability were observed when comparing the US census regions (Northeast RR=1.609, Midwest RR=1.819, South RR=1.934, West RR=1.776). PPCM mortality disparities exist across racial and geographic populations in the United States. A greater burden of social vulnerability is associated with higher PPCM mortality on a national level.

Examining Cultural Identity in Secondary Music Classrooms: Perceptions of Teachers and Students

The purpose of this study was to explore the perceptions of secondary-level music teachers and students when teachers implemented cultural identity affirming activities for their culturally diverse students. The method of this qualitative study was a phenomenological interview design. Teachers ( n = 2) and students ( n = 6) were selected from a racially diverse suburban area in the southern United States. Participants recounted their past and present musical and cultural backgrounds to provide insight into how these identities are represented in their music classrooms. Data were collected an in-depth interview series where “meaning-making” was studied through recounting the lived human experience. Interview transcripts were analyzed to understand how participants aimed to respect cultural identities in the music classroom, while also identifying any power imbalances that could hinder these efforts. Findings revealed that teachers’ own cultural background affected their pedagogical decisions and how they provided culturally responsive music experiences for their students. Students shared the kinds of musical experiences they expected in their music classroom and how their cultural identities were being acknowledged in their music experiences. Students recognized culturally responsive environments when student input in programmed music was respected, community was built through acknowledgment of each other’s cultures, and when open discussion about one another’s cultures occurred.

Improvement of serum folate status in the US women of reproductive age with fortified iodised salt with folic acid (FISFA study).

Mandatory folic acid fortification of enriched grains has reduced neural tube defect prevalence in several countries. We examined salt as an additional vehicle for folic acid fortification. The primary objective was to examine the change in serum folate concentration after 1 month of consumption of fortified iodised salt with folic acid (FISFA) among women of reproductive age. The secondary objectives were to examine (1) the feasibility of implementing FISFA intervention and (2) the acceptability of FISFA. We conducted a pre–post intervention study (January–April 2023). Participants received a FISFA saltshaker with the study salt (1 g of sodium chloride salt fortified with 100 mcg of folic acid) to use instead of regular table salt for 1 month. Serum folate was measured using the Elecsys Folate-III immunoassay method at baseline and 1-month endpoint. Change in serum folate was assessed using a two-tailed Wilcoxon signed rank test for paired samples. Metropolitan city, Southern USA. Non-pregnant, 18–40-year-old women who lived alone/with a partner. Thirty-two eligible women consented to participate, including eleven non-Hispanic-White, eleven non-Hispanic-Black and ten Hispanic. Post-intervention, there was a significant increase in median serum folate concentration of 1·40 nmol/l (IQR 0·74–2·05; P < 0·001) from 24·08 nmol/l to 25·96 nmol/l in an analytical sample of n 29. An increase was seen in 28/29 (93 %) participants. Feasibility: 100 % study consent and compliance. FISFA acceptability: 25 d average use; 1·28 g average daily intake; 96·7 % and 90 % reported taste and colour of FISFA as highly acceptable, respectively. FISFA is an effective approach to increasing serum folate concentrations among women of reproductive age. Findings should be replicated in a larger study.

The Evolving Global Epidemiology of Human Melioidosis: A Narrative Review

Endemic in over 45 countries globally, recent reports of locally acquired melioidosis in novel geographical areas, such as the Southern US, have highlighted the expanding geographical range of Burkholderia pseudomallei. Climate change and severe weather events have been linked to an increase in cases of melioidosis, which follows environmental exposure to the bacterium. Healthcare professionals should be aware of the possibility of the disease, with its diverse and often delayed presentations, even in areas not previously known to have risk. Over 200 cases of travel-associated melioidosis have been reported in the literature, highlighting the need to consider this disease in non-endemic areas, as diagnostic delays of up to 18 months have been identified. The review updates the global epidemiology of melioidosis, focusing on new geographical areas where cases have been diagnosed and imported cases, unusual clinical presentations and co-infections, and less frequent modes of transmission (laboratory exposures and the risk of acquisition due to imported infected animals and contaminated products).

Playing with fire: Socioeconomic factors and deliberate wildfires in Texas

Deliberately setting fires, also known as arson, is one of the primary causes of human-caused wildfires in the US. Arson fires pose a significant threat, contributing to the human-caused wildfire problem in the southern US. Since more than 90% of wildfires in the South are human-caused, it is particularly important to examine the factors that influence the distribution of arson wildfires in this region. While most research has combined arson fires together with other human-caused wildfires, a smaller body of studies has focussed specifically on fires started by arson. The focus of this study is to understand the key factors associated with the distribution of intentional wildfires in Texas. We examine the relationship between a combination of key socioeconomic factors and environmental factors and, arson wildfires using Negative Binomial models. As expected, our results indicate that road density, unemployment rate, and crime rate are positively associated with arson fires, and the number of law enforcement officers and wage rate are negatively associated with arson wildfire incidences. The higher percentage of forest cover in a county and higher temperature regimes are also positively associated with arson fire occurrences. As such, we conclude that arson wildfires are more likely in areas with high accessibility to wildlands. Similarly, counties with high unemployment rates and consequently high crime rates are more likely to suffer from arson wildfires. Our results clearly show that a higher presence of law enforcement officers in a county deter arsonists. Similarly, financial well-being as indicated by the higher wage rates in a county plays an apparent role in curbing arson wildfire occurrences. Thus, the results from this study provide valuable insights to policymakers, land managers, and fire prevention specialists to develop targeted interventions aimed at reducing arson risk in Texas and beyond.

Nomenclatural revision of Celtis (Cannabaceae) described for northern South America, Central America, the Caribbean and the southern United States

In preparation for a taxonomic review and a global phylogeny focusing on the Neotropical lineages of Celtis, the names described to northern South America, the Caribbean, Central America and southern United States were revised. For the northern axis, 87 names were identified, 60 of which have been reviewed in this contribution. Lectotypes are designated for Celtis berlandieri, C. dichotoma, C. jamaicensis, C. litoralis, C. pavonii, C. pubescens, C. riparia, C. rufescens, C. schiedeana, C. swartzii, C. tikalana, C. triflora, C. velutina and Sponia chichilea. Neotypes were assigned to C. berteroana and C. lamarckiana. Thirty-three names did not undergo changes in their typological status and five were excluded. Among the results, we highlight the (unpublished) location of the holotype of Celtis laevigata, as well as the designation of an epitype for this same species.

The Militarization of Employment Relations: Racialized Surveillance and Worker Control in Amazon Fulfillment Centers

Through a socio-structural analysis, we examine contemporary forms of labor control faced by Black warehouse workers in the southern United States. Grounding our research in critical industrial relations theory and centering our analysis in the counter-narratives of Black workers at an Amazon warehouse in Bessemer, Alabama, we examine the impact of intensified military-style tactics in the modern workplace, contextualized by historical and regional legacies of racialized labor exploitation, policing, and bodily control.

Exploring relationship maintenance behaviors among emerging adult siblings: comparative analysis of measurement frameworks

ABSTRACT This study replicates and expands upon Myers (2022) work examining the moderating influence of shared family identity on relationship maintenance behaviors and relational quality. This research also offers a comparative analysis between two measurement frameworks designed to evaluate relationship maintenance behaviors: Canary and Stafford’s (1992) model and Ledbetter’s (2013) framework. Survey data was collected from 218 undergraduate students at a mid-size university in the southern United States, all enrolled in undergraduate communication courses. Using ordinary least squares (OLS) multiple regression, findings demonstrate the moderating effect of shared family identity on emerging adult sibling use of the following relationship maintenance behaviors from Ledbetter’s measurement framework—verbal affection, informal talk, deep talk, conflict management, and shared networks—and perceived relational quality. Notably, none of Canary and Stafford’s maintenance strategies produced significant results in the moderation analysis.

Implementation of an HIV Prevention Intervention at Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Predominantly Black Institutions

Black Americans and the Southern United States are disproportionately represented in the HIV epidemic. Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Predominantly Black Institutions (PBIs), often located in communities that have been historically underserved, are uniquely positioned to implement HIV prevention interventions focused on Black young adults. The purpose of the current study was to conduct a qualitative study, using the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR) model as a guide, to identify the barriers and facilitators to implementing an HIV intervention pre- and post-implementation. Pre-implementation key informant interviews with administrators, faculty, and staff, alongside focus groups with students, highlighted several themes as potential influencers on intervention rollout. These included perceived need, campus health resources, cost, personnel availability, student priorities, HIV-related stigma, and institutional culture. Post-implementation interviews with campus liaisons further revealed themes including institutional culture, external partnerships, internal communication, student health resource accessibility, and peer educator recruitment and retention. These findings underscore the complexities of implementing public health interventions in academic settings and may guide future efforts at HBCUs and PBIs to effectively address HIV prevention.

Toxicity and Repellency of (E/Z)-3-Butylidenephthalide: A Natural Compound Isolated from Ligusticum porteri Root Extract Evaluated Against Imported Fire Ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae)

Imported fire ants are pests of significant importance, especially in the southern United States. We tested (E/Z)-3-butylidenephthalide, a natural compound that was isolated from the ethanolic extract of Ligusticum porteri roots, as a repellent and toxicant against workers of imported fire ants. A series of serial concentrations, starting from 156 µg/g until failure, were tested using digging bioassays. Workers removed significantly less sand from the vials treated with (E/Z)-3-butylidenephthalide as compared to the ethanol control. Based on sand removal data, (E/Z)-3-butylidenephthalide treatment resulted in a more significant digging suppression against red imported fire ant workers at concentrations ranging between 19.5 and 0.6 µg/g than the solvent control whereas sand removal at 0.3 µg/g was similar with the solvent control. Black imported fire ants showed repellency at serial concentrations ranging between 19.5 and 0.15 µg/g whereas the hybrid imported fire ants showed repellency between 19.5 and 4.9 µg/g. In DEET treatments, red and black imported fire ants showed repellency at dosages of 125 to 62.5 µg/g, whereas the treatment failed at the dose of 15.6 µg/g in hybrid fire ants. (E/Z)-3-butylidenephthalide with LC50 values of 11 and 16.4 µg/g was toxic against red and black imported fire ants, respectively, followed by hybrid imported fire ants (LC50 = 104.7 µg/g). Fipronil with LC50 values of 0.49, 0.33, and 0.53 µg/g against red, black, and hybrid fire ants, respectively, was more toxic than (E/Z)-3-butylidenephthalide. In residual bioassay, toxic activity lasted for 3 weeks at dosages of 250 and 500 μg/g against HIFA. The high repellency and toxicity of (E/Z)-3-butylidenephthalide against imported fire ants makes it a natural compound of interest for further evaluation under natural field conditions.

Optimizing multi-environment trials in the Southern US Rice belt via smart-climate-soil prediction-based models and economic importance

Rice breeding programs globally have worked to release increasingly productive and climate-smart cultivars, but the genetic gains have been limited for some reasons. One is the capacity for field phenotyping, which presents elevated costs and an unclear approach to defining the number and allocation of multi-environmental trials (MET). To address this challenge, we used soil information and ten years of historical weather data from the USA rice belt, which was translated into rice response based on the rice cardinal temperatures and crop stages. Next, we eliminated those highly correlated Environmental Covariates (ECs) (&amp;gt;0.95) and applied a supervised algorithm for feature selection using two years of data (2021-22) and 25 genotypes evaluated for grain yield in 18 representative locations in the Southern USA. To test the trials’ optimization, we performed the joint analysis using prediction-based models in four different scenarios: i) considering trials as non-related, ii) including the environmental relationship matrix calculated from ECs, iii) within clusters; iv) sampling one location per cluster. Finally, we weigh the trial’s allocation considering the counties’ economic importance and the environmental group to which they belong. Our findings show that eight ECs explained 58% of grain yield variation across sites and 53% of the observed genotype-by-environment interaction. Moreover, it is possible to reduce 28% the number of locations without significant loss in accuracy. Furthermore, the US Rice belt comprises four clusters, with economic importance varying from 13 to 45%. These results will help us better allocate trials in advance and reduce costs without penalizing accuracy.

Transfusion-transmissible coinfections among US blood donors.

Transfusion-transmissible infection (TTI) prevalence among US blood donors has been widely documented. Here we estimate the prevalence of donors presenting with ≥2 TTIs (multiple infections past or present referred to as coinfections) and describe their demographics and associations. Data from the Transfusion-Transmissible Infections Monitoring System were compiled for October 2020-September 2023 (3 years). Prevalence per million donations (pmd) was calculated for each TTI coinfection combination with demographic characteristics summarized. The odds of each TTI coinfection combination were estimated using logistic regression. Reactivity by NAT and/or serology (HIV, HBV, and HCV) defined donors as consensus positive (CP) for each infection while serology-based algorithms defined syphilis CP and the subset with active syphilis infections (ASIs). About 22 million donations were included, with 212 coinfections (9.7 pmd). Around 2% of donations positive for any TTI (n = 10,516) were coinfections. Coinfection prevalence per TTI combination ranged from 0.3 pmd for HIV CP and HCV CP, to 4.3 pmd for HIV CP and syphilis CP. There were high proportions of coinfections from donors who were male, aged 25-54 years, white or black, first time, and residing in the southern US Census Region. The odds of a second TTI occurring in an individual donor with a TTI ranged from 23 (95% CI: 13, 41) times more likely for HBV CP and ASI to 395 (95% CI: 298, 524) times more likely for HIV CP and ASI. Coinfections are relatively uncommon among blood donors in the United States; however, associations exist among HIV, HBV, HCV, and syphilis infections.

Welcoming Cities/Unwelcoming States: Integration, Segregation and Suburban Sprawl in the U.S. South

This paper examines the spread of the new immigrant “ethnoburb” across Georgia. Gwinnett County is one of the most diverse counties due to immigration in the American South, and a top destination for immigrants, nationally. The emergence of immigrant-majority towns in suburban areas with low levels of resources for non-English speaking residents has created challenges at competing scales of local and state governance. Suburbs near Atlanta’s Buford Highway, where many immigrants live and work, experienced greater intensity of ICE enforcement due to policy shifts in the post-2016 Presidential Administration, as well as mixed forms of “welcome” from differently sized municipalities.

A case study of the subjective workload of forest equipment operators in South Carolina

ABSTRACT Logging operations in the Southern United States have become more mechanized over time. However, extensive use of complex and heavy forest machineries for long durations increases operator workload, especially the cognitive demand. Working under demanding conditions can decrease the health of forest equipment operators over time, reducing productivity and increasing the risk of accidents. This study provides an initial assessment of the workload of logging equipment operators during timber harvesting operations using conventional wheeled feller-buncher, grapple skidder, and knuckle-boom loader harvesting systems by assessing the subjective workload of the logging equipment operators in South Carolina. In addition, we observed the heart rate of equipment operators to study the activities causing excessive physical and mental workload. Logging equipment operators self-evaluated their workload using the NASA Task Load Index, a subjective measure of workload. Results show no significant difference in the overall workload of equipment operators working at clearcut and thinning sites. The workload dimensions of Effort and Frustration contributed the most to the overall workload, while Performance had the least contribution. Sudden heart rate spikes occurred when operators conducted physical activities such as clearing debris from a felling head but were otherwise unobserved.

Cutaneous Lesions in the Gular Region Caused by Feather Follicle Infestation with Harpirhynchidae sp. Mites in Great Crested Flycatchers (Myiarchus crinitus) in New York, USA, 2016-23.

Great Crested Flycatchers (Myiarchus crinitus), migratory passerines with a breeding range throughout the northeastern, midwestern, and southern US, are banded annually at the Braddock Bay Bird Observatory located on the southern shore of Lake Ontario, New York, USA. In 2016, a Great Crested Flycatcher was observed with distinct lesions in the gular and ventral neck region, which prompted evaluation for similar lesions in subsequently trapped flycatchers and other passerine species. From 2016 to 2023, 62/102 banded Great Crested Flycatchers had their gular region examined, and seven were found to have lesions (11.3% incidence). Similar lesions were not found in any other species. Lesions were localized to the gular region and included extensive feather loss with thickened, corrugated, pale-yellow skin. Grossly visible 1- to 2-mm-diameter, raised, white-to-yellow foci throughout the affected region corresponded microscopically to feather follicles that were massively dilated with mites. Morphologic analysis of mites obtained from skin scrapes revealed that this mite species belongs to the family Harpirhynchidae. Mites in this family have restricted avian host ranges and cause varying clinical presentations in passerines, though many species remain unidentified. PCR efforts were unsuccessful in yielding a species-level identification. Further monitoring of Great Crested Flycatchers and other avian species is warranted, as the fitness implications of this ectoparasitism at the individual and population levels are not known.

Collaborations between Public Library Educators and Practitioners to Apply a Theory of Change and Promote Civic Engagement for Racial Justice in the American South

The Institute of Museum and Library Services’ National Leadership Grants for Libraries program recently awarded a $332,939 grant titled “Civic Engagement for Racial Justice in Public Libraries” (RJ@PL) to the University of Alabama and the Chicago State University. The grant’s purpose is to build the capabilities of public librarians and selected communities to promote civic engagement for racial justice and achieve the following objectives: 1) Assessment of public library efforts to advance racial justice (externally and internally); 2) Operationalization of strategic participatory planning process using a theory of change to develop roadmaps and action plans that further racial justice in select community domains (economy, education, health, etc.); 3) Implementation of key strategic components of information-based offerings in six/eight library settings. This paper reports ongoing collaboration to further the three design components via applying a theory of change for an intended impact of increased community wellbeing resulting from improved racial climate.

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on healthcare workers

Purpose This paper aims to examine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on healthcare workers’ perception of job pressure as well as their anxiety and depression levels. Design/methodology/approach Survey data were collected from 109 healthcare workers enrolled in two MBA courses in Healthcare Human Resources Management at a university in the Southern USA, respectively, Fall 2020 and Fall 2021. A path analysis was conducted to test a model of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on healthcare workers’ perception of job pressure as well as their anxiety and depression levels. Findings The study results showed treatment of COVID-19 patients led to increased work hours for healthcare workers; changes in work hours and work methods were related to healthcare workers’ perception of job pressure; healthcare workers perceptions of job pressure were positively related to their anxiety levels; organizational support was negatively related to healthcare workers’ anxiety levels; and healthcare workers’ anxiety levels were positively related to their depression levels. Originality/value Findings from the tested model provide support for the Job Demands-Resources model in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Impacts of On‐Road Vehicular Emissions on U.S. Air Quality: A Comparison of Two Mobile Emission Models (MOVES and FIVE)

AbstractOn‐road vehicles are significant contributors to air pollution globally, particularly to nitrogen oxides (NOx) and ozone (O3). Quantifying their contribution to air quality is crucial to understanding the trends of vehicle emissions as low‐ and “zero” emission vehicles join the fleet. Modeling on‐road emissions is complex due to various factors like fleet activities, traffic patterns, and meteorological conditions. We compare on‐road emissions from two mobile models: the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Fuel‐based Inventory of Vehicle Emission (FIVE) and the US Environmental Protection Agency Motor Vehicle Emission Simulator (MOVES), finding they contribute 4%–33% to volatile organic compounds (VOCs), NOx, and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in the contiguous United States (CONUS). Using a regional chemical transport model, we assess air quality effects under different emission scenarios. Both emission data sets yield satisfactory performance, with MOVES showing lower biases in ozone (O3) and PM2.5 over CONUS, while FIVE performs better at city scales due to higher urban NOx emissions. In January, on‐road emissions increased surface O3 over western and southern US by up to 9.1%–13.1% but decreased by 2.5% over the northeastern US, while PM2.5 predictions vary across the US (−85% to 24%). In July, on‐road emissions elevate O3 and PM2.5 concentrations by 15%–20% across CONUS, except in some west coast cities. They also greatly contribute to nitrogen dioxide (NO2) by more than 80% near roads and in urban areas. This study highlights the significant impact of on‐road emissions on urban air quality and provides insights for improving air quality forecasting and management.
