The Effect of Solution-Focused Approach on Reducing Smartphone Addiction

The aim of this study is to examine the effect of solution-focused group counseling on reducing smartphone addiction among university students. The research is an experimental study with experimental-control group with pre-test, post-test and follow-up measurement design. The study group of the research consisted of 22 university students (10 females and 12 males). 11 of these students are in the experimental group (5 females and 6 males) and 11 of them are in the control (5 females and 6 males) group. A solution-focused group psychological counseling program was applied to the experimental group to reduce smartp-hone addiction, consisting of six sessions (90-120 minutes once a week) developed by the researcher. Kontrol grubuna ise herhangi bir çalışma yapılmamıştır. In this study, "Smartphone Addiction Scale" and "Personal Information Form" were used as data collection tools. The data obtained from this study were analyzed using the Mann Whitney U Test and the Wilcoxon Signed-Ranks Test. The findings of the study revealed that the solution-focused group was more effective than the control group. In addition, it was observed that this effectiveness was preserved with the follow-up studies carried out at the end of three months

Solution-Focused Group Counseling on Mental States in Hemodialysis Patients with Anxiety.

Hemodialysis patients usually suffer from anxiety due to physical and social factors, which belongs to a kind of psychological disorder, easily contributing to the decrease of patients' adherence to the treatment, and seriously affecting the patients' health status and quality of life. Solution-focused group counseling (SFGC) is a kind of psychotherapy proven to improve emotional problems in many fields. Still, the application of this therapy is rare in medical situations. This retrospective study aims to analyze the application of SFGC and probe into the effects on mental states in hemodialysis patients with anxiety. From January 2022 to February 2023, 212 patients with hemodialysis and anxiety admitted to our hospital were selected, and 9 patients who did not meet the inclusion criteria were excluded. Finally, 203 patients were included in this retrospective study. According to different clinical management methods, 102 patients receiving routine management were classified as the control group (CG), and 101 patients receiving SFGC on the basis of routine management were included in the observation group (OG). The scores of the self-perceived burden scale (SPBS), medical coping modes questionnaire (MCMQ), and self-rating anxiety scale (SAS) of the two groups were collected. The data collected were calculated and processed by software SPSS 26.0, and the effects of different managements on the mental states of patients with hemodialysis and anxiety were compared. After management, the scores of SPBS in both groups were lower than those before management, and the score in OG was significantly lower than the CG (p < 0.001). After management, the confrontation scores increased, the avoidance and resignation scores decreased in the MCMQ of the two groups, and the scores in the OG changed significantly (p < 0.001). The SAS scores of the two groups after management were significantly lower than those before management, and the OG score was significantly lower than the CG (p < 0.001). SFGC has a positive effect on the mental states of patients with hemodialysis and anxiety, which is worthy of further clinical study.

해결중심 집단상담의 국내 연구 동향분석: 2007년부터 2023년 연구를 중심으로

Objectives: Solution-focused(SF) group counseling has been used as an intervention in various clinical settings. However, there are not many systematic reviews showing the landscape of SF group counseling. The goal of this study was to understand the trends of SF group counseling studies published through Korean academic journals from 2007 to the first half of 2023. Methods: For this purpose, major search engines such as RISS were used to collect the data. Seventy-one articles were extracted. The research topics were analyzed applying content analysis. Results: Key findings were as follows. First, an increasing volume of research in SF group counseling has been conducted every year since 2007 but has declined sharply since 2020 likely due to the aftermath of COVID-19. Second, the research area of SF group&#x0D; counseling is expanding and diversifying. Third, despite the growth of research, there are not enough data available to judge the quality of the studies, the principles, and central philosophies of solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT), and the dynamics of the groups. Conclusions: Based on the results, directions for follow-up research and practice were discussed.

Using Reflecting Teams in Solution-Focused Group Counseling Experiential Training for Master’s Students

ABSTRACTThe authors describe the use of a reflecting team (RT) to teach the experiential component of a master’s course in small group counseling using solution-focused (SF) therapy. Doctoral students act as the RT and provide feedback to the group members who can then respond to the feedback. The authors provide an overview of the process, alternative approaches for using an RT, feedback from small groups and RT members, and a RT observation form.

Investigation of the Effectiveness of the Solution-Focused Group Counseling Program to Increase Self-Control in University Students

The purpose of this research is to examine the effectiveness of the solution-focused group counseling program aimed at increasing the self-control levels of university students. The research is an experimental study with experimental-control group with pre-test, post-test and follow-up measurement design. The study group of the research consisted of 26 university students. Within the scope of this research, 13 of the students were randomly assigned to the experimental group and 13 to the control group. In the research, university students in the experimental group were given 6 sessions (each session is between 90-120 minutes and one day a week) of solution-focused group psychological counseling once a week. No studies were conducted on the control group. In this study, “Self-Control Scale” and “Personal Information Form” were used as data collection tools. Mann Whitney U Test and Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test were used in the analysis of the data. As a result of the research, it was determined that the solution-focused group was more effective than the control group in increasing self-control. In addition, it was determined that this effectiveness was maintained in the follow-up test performed at the end of three months.

Solution-focused group counseling: A solution to enhance students’ self-confidence

Self-confidence plays a pivotal role in developing an individual’s potentials. Solution-focused counseling approach views an individual as the only expert for his/her own life, and only they themselves are capable of making the best decision. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of solution-focused group counseling sessions in enhancing students' self-confidence. To this end, a pretest-posttest control group experimental study was conducted, involving twelve students of Public Islamic Senior High School 3 Langkat, who were assigned into two groups of six participants each. Data collected from self-confidence scale were analyzed using Wilcoxon Sign Test by identifying the difference in average improvement of self-confidence. The experimental group exhibited a significance value of 0.002 ( 0.005), indicating that the solution-focused group counseling could improve students’ self-confidence.

성격강점 기반 해결중심 집단상담 프로그램이 초등학생의 자기결정성에 미치는 효과

The purpose of this study is to develop character strengths-based, solution-focused group counseling program for elementary school students and verify its effects on their self-determination. To verify effects of the program, 20 elementary school students in grade 4 and 5 were selected and assigned to the experimental group and the control group of 10 students, respectively, after conducting the homogeneity test, 10 students in the experimental group participated in the program twice a week for 50 minutes for a total of 10 sessions. The results were evaluated by comparing changes in the experimental group and the control group before and after the program and changes expected in the future to each group through repeated measures ANOVA using SPSS 28.0. The results are as follows: First, character strengths-based, solution-focused group counseling program had significant effects on self-determination of elementary school students. Second, character strengths-based, solution-focused group counseling program had significant effects on all the subfactors of self-determination, which are autonomy, competence, and relationship. Therefore, this study is significant as an empirical study that tried character strengths-based, solution-focused method in an integrated approach to develop a program for elementary school students and verified the effects. In addition, the study is significant in that it can be used as a fundamental reference for constituting a program for the school site and counseling field through verification of effects on autonomy, competence, and relationship, which are subfactors of self-determination.

Effectiveness of Solution-Focused Group Counseling on Depression and Cognition Among Chinese Older Adults: A Cluster Randomized Controlled Trial

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of solution-focused group counseling (SFGC) to reduce depressive symptoms and improve cognitive functions among Chinese rural older adults. Method: In a cluster randomized controlled trial, 290 participants were randomly assigned to a 12-session SFGC intervention or a control group. the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale and Mini-Mental State Examination was adopted to measure depressive symptoms and cognitive functions, respectively, at pretest and posttest. Results: Repeated measure ANOVAs showed a significant group by time effect for both measures. Paired sample t-tests showed that depressive symptoms significantly decreased in the intervention group, but not in the control group. Cognitive functions did not change in the intervention group, but significantly declined in the control group. Conclusions: Our findings support the feasibility and effectiveness of a culturally adapted SFGC for reducing depressive symptoms and protecting cognitive functions among the disadvantaged older adults in a developing country.

The effectiveness of solution-focused counseling on the mental health of mothers with gestational diabetes under treatment with insulin – A randomized clinical trial

ABSTRACT Objectives: The present study was designed to investigate the effect of solution-focused counseling on mental health and self-efficacy in women with gestational diabetes. Methods: This study was a randomized clinical trial with a parallel design. Fifty-six women with gestational diabetes completed DASS (Depression, Anxiety, Stress Scale) and DMSES (Diabetes Management Self-Efficacy Scale) in both groups immediately and eight weeks after the last day of the intervention. Solution-focused counseling was performed in six 60-minute sessions for six weeks. The subjects in the control group received routine care. The analytical statistic of t-test, chi-square, and variance analysis with repeated measurements using SPSS were used to analyze the data. Results: The mean score of stress was 11.7 ± 9.09 in the posttest and 7.25 ± 6.25 eight weeks after the intervention. Also, scores in the control group were 13.5 ± 7.47 and 13.29 ± 6.99, respectively (P = .00). The mean score of anxiety in the intervention and control groups was 9.93 ± 7.80 vs. 9.64 ± 6.30 immediately after the intervention, and 5.79 ± 4.53 vs. 9.64 ± 5.96 eight weeks after the intervention (P = .00). Diabetes management self-efficacy was significant too (P = .001). Conclusion: Solution-focused group counseling improved the mental health of pregnant women with gestational diabetes. This method increased diabetic self-efficacy in these clients by controlling stress and anxiety and decreasing depression. IRCT: The code of this clinical trial study is IRCT20200202046339N1.

Investigating the effectiveness of solution-focused group counselling and group guidance programs to promote healthy internet use of university students

This research aims to investigate the effectiveness of a “solution-focused group counseling program to increase healthy Internet use” and “group guidance to increase healthy Internet use” to increase healthy Internet use among young people. The study group for the research comprised 39 university students (22 females 56%, 17 males 44%). In this study, the Personal Information Form, Interview Form and Problematic Internet Use Scale were used as data collection tools. Analysis of data used the ANOVA for mixed measures and content analysis of interviews with participants in the solution-focused group counseling program about increasing healthy Internet use about their experiences. In the results of the research, it was determined that the solution-focused group was more effective than the guidance group and the control group. It was determined that the guidance group was also more effective than the control group. In addition, it was determined that this differentiation in the groups continued to be effective in the follow-up measurements made 3 months after the completion of the application.

Bu çalışmanın amacı, çözüm odaklı grupla psikolojik danışmanın üniversite öğrencilerinin psikolojik sağlamlığını artırmadaki etkisini incelemektir. Araştırma, deney-kontrol gruplu ön test, son test ve izleme ölçüm desenli deneysel bir çalışmadır. Araştırmanın çalışma grubunu 22 üniversite öğrencisi (12 kız ve 10 erkek) oluşturmuştur. Çalışma grubundaki öğrenciler üniversite birinci, ikinci, üçüncü ve dördüncü sınıf düzeyindedir. Ayrıca çalışma grubundaki üniversite öğrencileri 18-25 yaş arasındadır. Bu öğrencilerin 11'i deney (6 kız ve 5 erkek) ve 11’i kontrol (6 kız ve 5 erkek) grubunda yer almaktadır. Deney grubunda yer alan üniversite öğrencilerine araştırmacı tarafından geliştirilen altı oturumdan oluşan psikolojik sağlamlığı artırmaya yönelik çözüm odaklı grupla psikolojik danışma programı uygulanmıştır. Bu çalışmanın amacı, çözüm odaklı grupla psikolojik danışmanın üniversite öğrencilerinin psikolojik sağlamlığını artırmadaki etkisini incelemektir. Bu çalışmadan elde edilen veriler Mann Whitney U Testi ve Wilcoxon Signed-Ranks Testi kullanılarak analiz edilmiştir. Araştırmanın bulguları çözüm odaklı grubun kontrol grubuna göre daha etkili olduğunu ortaya koymuştur. Ayrıca üç ay sonunda yapılan takip çalışmaları ile bu etkinliğin korunduğu gözlemlenmiştir. Bu çalışma sonucunda çözüm odaklı grupla psikolojik danışmanın üniversite öğrencilerinin psikolojik sağlamlık düzeylerini artırmada etkili olduğuna ulaşılmıştır.

The effectiveness of solution-focused group counseling on anxiety and social skills among female students

ABSTRACT This semi-experimental study investigated the influence of a six-session, manualized solution-focused group counseling intervention on anxiety and social skills among female high school students attending two high schools in Eqlid, Iran. 15 participants were randomly selected from each school. One school was randomly assigned as the intervention school. Assessments included the Screen for Child Anxiety Related Emotional Disorder (SCARED) and the Social Skills Rating System (SSRS). Effectiveness was evaluated with ANCOVA. Anxiety decreased in the treatment group (27.87 to 19.81, effect size 0.55, p <.001) and Social skills improved more in the treatment group (32.80 to 40.93, effect size 0.35, p < .001).

Intervention for Social Anxiety among University Students with a Solution-Focused Group Counseling Program

The aim of the research is to investigate the effect of a solution-focused group counseling program on reducing social anxiety of university students. The study group consists of 30 (16 female, 14 male) students who volunteered among 224 students who continue their education at Afyon Kocatepe University in the 2019-2020 academic year. The research had a 2x3 mixed pattern with experiment and control groups and pretest, posttest and follow-up measures. The Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale (LSAS) was used as data collection tool. University students in the experimental group attended a 6-session solution-focused group counseling program about reducing social anxiety, while the control group did not participate in any study. After completing experimental processes, both groups underwent posttest and then follow-up measures at the end of 3 months. Data were analyzed with the two-way analysis of variance technique for mixed patterns. Results revealed that the solution-focused group counseling program was effective in reducing the social anxiety of university students and the efficacy continued during follow-up at the end of three months.

Comparing the Effect of Solution-Focused Group Counseling and Individual Counseling Based on PLISSIT Model on Sexual Satisfaction of Women with High Body Mass Index

Background & aim: obesity can negatively affect sexual function and lower sexual satisfaction in obese people. The present study aimed to compare the effect of solution-focused group counseling and individual counseling based on the Plissit model on the sexual satisfaction of women with high body mass index. Methods: This randomized clinical was conducted on 60 women with a BMIE�30 kg/m² who were randomly assigned to two groups of solution-focused group counseling and individual counseling based on the Plissit model. Data collection tools included personal and midwifery information questionnaires, as well as Larson's sexual satisfaction questionnaire. Solution-focused group counseling group received eight 45-minute counseling sessions, while the individual counseling group received three 60-minute sessions of counseling based on the Plissit model. Data were analyzed in SPSS software (version 16) using Chi-square, independent t-test, Mann-Whitney, and Wilcoxon tests. Results: In the solution-focused counseling group, the scores significantly improved in the dimensions of quality of sex life (pre-test=30.87±5.51; post-test=38.33±1.71), sexual attitude (pre-test=26.13±2.75; post-test=29.30±0.88), desire to have sex (pre-test=21.50±3.31; post-test=23.40±1.40), and total sexual satisfaction (pre-test=102.17±13.42; post-test=115.07±4.16), after the intervention, compared to the scores obtained before the intervention (p <0.001). In the individual counseling group based on the Plissit model, the scores significantly improved in the dimensions of quality of sex life (p <0.001; pre-test=30.30±3.70; post-test=35.103±3.69), sexual attitude (P=0.01;pre-test=24.53±2.26;post-test=26.10±1.92), sexual compatibility (P=0.008; pre-test=21.80±1.61, post-test=22.67±0.99), as well as total sexual satisfaction (P=0.001; pre-test=98.93±8.46; post-test=106.17±5.10) after the intervention, compared to their scores before the intervention. Conclusion: As evidenced by the obtained results, solution-focused group counseling can lead to increased sexual satisfaction of women with high BMI.Â

Effect of Solution-focused Group Counseling Approach on the Happiness of Postmenopausal Women Suffering from Empty Nest Syndrome

Background & aim: Empty nest syndrome reduces the quality of life and happiness among postmenopausal women, and it seems that counseling is one of the efficient approaches which can be used to manage this problem. Due to the scarcity of research in the field of counseling in postmenopausal women, the present study was conducted to assess the effect of the solution-focused group counseling approach on the happiness of postmenopausal women with empty nest syndrome. Methods: This clinical trial was conducted on 75 postmenopausal women referring to health centers, Mashhad, Iran in 2019 Subjects were selected via convenience sampling and randomly assigned to two groups of solution-focused group counseling and control. In the intervention group, six 90-minute counseling sessions were held on a weekly basis. Data were assessed in two stages before and after the intervention using the Oxford Happiness Questionnaire. Data were analyzed in SPSS software (version 24) using Mann-Whitney, Chi-square, and Fishers' exact test. Results: Based on the results, no statistically significant difference was observed in the mean score of happiness before the intervention (P>0.05). Nonetheless, after the intervention, the mean happiness score in the solution-focused group counseling significantly differed from the mean score obtained in the control group (p <0.001). Conclusion: As evidenced by the obtained results, it can be concluded that solution-focused group counseling can be used to improve the happiness of postmenopausal women due to the statistically significant increase in the mean total happiness score of postmenopausal women underwent this counseling approach.

해결중심 집단상담 프로그램이 스마트폰 중독 청소년의 자기통제력, 자아존중감, 우울에 미치는 영향

본 연구는 해결중심 집단상담 프로그램이 스마트폰 중독 청소년의 자기통제력, 자아존중감, 우울에 미치는 영향을 알아보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 P시에 있는 중학교를 선정하여 스마트폰 중독 위험군으로 분류된 22명을 실험집단과 통제집단에 무작위 배정을 하였다. 프로그램은 총 8회기로 구성하였고 2019년 10월 8일부터 11월 29일까지 실시하였다. 자료분석은 SPSS 20.0 프로그램을 이용하여 두 집단 간의 평균차이를 검증하였다. 연구결과 두 집단 간의 사전검사에서는 동질성이 확보되었고, 사후검사에는 실험집단의 자기통제력과 자아존중감이 통제집단보다 높은 것으로 나타났으며 집단간에 유의한 차이가 있었다. 또한 실험집단의 우울은 통제집단보다 낮아진 것으로 나타났고 집단 간에 유의한 차이를 보여주고 있어서 프로그램의 효과성이 확인되었다. 본 연구에서는 연구대상자의 규모를 확대하여 프로그램의 효과성을 알아보는 후속연구의 필요성을 제언하였다.

The Effect of Solution-Focused Group Counseling Intervention on College Students’ Internet Addiction: A Pilot Study

This pilot study aimed to explore the effect of solution-focused group counseling intervention on Internet addiction among college students. Eighteen college students participated in this study, out of which nine subjects were assigned into the experimental group and the rest (n = 9) to a control group. The experimental group received group counseling for five weeks, while the control group did not receive any intervention. The revised version of the Chinese Internet Addiction Scale (CIAS-R) was used to capture pre-test and post-test excessive use in the two groups. The experimental group was also subjected to a follow-up test and self-reported Internet addiction scores six months after the end of group counseling. Results showed that after the five-week solution-focused group counseling, the scores of four dimensions of the CIAS-R in the experimental group had CIAS-R decreased, and the reduction trend of the total score of CIAS-R was similar across all subjects in this group. The treatment effect was larger than the placebo reduction in the control group in two dimensions: compulsive and withdrawal (Sym-C & Sym-W) and tolerance (Sym-T) symptoms. Qualitative research confirmed the conclusions from the quantitative data, showing that the experimental group reduced its Internet addiction symptoms. Overall, the findings suggested that solution-focused group counseling had positive intervention effects on Internet addiction.

Effectiveness of Solution-Focused Group Counseling on the Mental Health of Midwifery Students.

The present study was conducted with the objective of investigating the effectiveness of solution-focused group counseling (SFGC) on promoting the mental health of midwifery students. The present study is an intervention-based study with a pretest, a post-test, and a control group. The statistical population included all of the midwifery students studying in the midwifery department of the Bam University of Medical Sciences, Kerman, Iran, who filled out the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ) in the screening phase. In the second phase, 40 individuals, having a low level of mental health based on the cutoff score of 23, were selected and randomly divided into 2 groups (intervention and control), each group with 20 participants. The intervention group participated in 5 sessions of 75 minutes for SFGC. Then, the post-test was held in both groups and the data analysis was conducted using the Mann-Whitney and the Kruskal-Wallis test with IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 21.0 (IBM Corp, Armonk, NY, USA). The significance level was considered as p < 0.05. The findings showed that the mean of the post-test mental health scores of the intervention group (14.5 ± 50.35) and of the control group (23.6 ± 35.83) showed a statistically significant difference (p < 0.0001). Moreover, the comparison between the mean scores of the mental health subscales (physical symptoms, stress, social performance, and depression) showed a statistically significant difference in these groups, and SFGC improved physical symptoms, stress, social performance, and depression in the members of the intervention group. Solution-focused group counseling may improve all levels of mental health. This type of counseling is recommended to be used to solve the psychological problems and to improve the mental health of students, as well as of the staff of the health system.

Effectiveness of solution-focused group counseling to improve planned happenstance skills of student

This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of solution-focused group counseling to improve students planned happenstance skills. The experimental research method way repeated measures with pretest design and multiple posttest design, involving 5 students as participants which from 24 upperclassman of the guidance and counseling FKIP ULM which have low planned happenstance skills. The result of the research by using one-way ANOVA for repeated measures test showed that solution-focused group counseling was effective in improving the planned happenstance skills (F (2,8) = 325,895; p&lt;0,001).
