Solubility measurements and molecular dynamics simulations of perphenazine (form I) in three binary solvent systems

This study aimed to investigate the perphenazine (form I)’s solubility in three binary solvent systems: acetone + water, n-propanol + water, and N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) + water, within the temperature range of 278.15 K to 318.15 K. The solubility data were obtained using a dynamic method and fitted using four models: the NRTL model, modified Apelblat equation, CNIBS/R-K model, and Jouyban-Acree model. All four models provided satisfactory fitting results, with the CNIBS/R-K model exhibiting the best performance. In all cases, it was observed that the solubility of perphenazine (form I) exhibited a positive correlation with temperature while keeping the solvent composition constant. Specifically, in the DMF + water binary solvent system, the solubility of perphenazine (form I) increased with higher mass fractions of the positive solvent. Additionally, the phenomenon of co-solvency was observed when perphenazine (form I) was dissolved in the acetone + water and n-propanol + water binary solvent systems. To gain insights into the intermolecular interactions within the perphenazine (form I) crystal, Hirshfeld surface (HS) analysis was employed. The Dmol3 module was used to calculate the electrostatic potential of perphenazine molecules, followed by molecular dynamics simulation, analysis of the solute–solvent and solvent–solvent radial distribution functions (RDF), and calculation of solvation free energy. Overall, this study enhances the understanding of the dissolution behavior of perphenazine (form I) and provides valuable data to support further investigations into its crystallization process.

Morse potential parameters of dissipative particle dynamics force fields for non-polarizable water models

The Morse potential parameters compatible with dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) for water are determined by the Ornstein-Zernike (OZ) equation with the hyper-netted chain (HNC) closure. The present study verifies that the HNC approximation is accurate for a DPD system described by the soft repulsive and Morse potentials. Firstly, we demonstrate that the modified form of the Morse potential is necessary for the numerical solution of the OZ/HNC equations. Subsequently, the Morse potential parameters for mimicking SPCE, TIP3P, TIP4P, and TIP5P water models within the DPD framework are determined by mapping the radial distribution function (RDF) in the HNC approximation to those of all-atom simulations. The first-peak positions and heights of the center-of-mass RDFs for all-atom water models are successfully reproduced by DPD simulations using the determined parameters. The OZ/HNC results for the RDFs and pressures, calculated for the obtained water models, are in satisfactory agreement with the DPD results. Moreover, we investigate how the addition of the Morse potential term to the solute-solvent interaction manifests itself in the solution properties. Major effects of the Morse potential are found in the solute-solvent RDF and the potential of mean force (PMF) between a pair of solutes. We discuss the molecular mechanism underlying the effects induced by the Morse potential in detail.

All-Atom Nonadiabatic Semiclassical Mapping Dynamics for Photoinduced Charge Transfer of Organic Photovoltaic Molecules in Explicit Solvents.

Direct all-atom simulation of nonadiabatic dynamics in disordered condensed phases like liquid solutions and amorphous solids has been challenging. The first all-atom simulation of the photoinduced charge-transfer dynamics of a prototypical organic photovoltaic carotenoid-porphyrin-C60 molecular triad in explicit tetrahydrofuran is presented. Based on the Meyer-Miller mapping Hamiltonian, various semiclassical and mixed quantum-classical dynamics are employed, including the linearized semiclassical, symmetrical quasiclassical, mean-field Ehrenfest, classical mapping model, and spin-mapping model approaches. The all-atom nonadiabatic dynamics were compared to multi-state harmonic models with a globally shared bath, and the models built using the ensemble averages on the initial electronic state could reproduce the all-atom results. The solvent effect was found to be critical for the photoinduced charge transfer, and the time-dependent solute-solvent radial distribution functions revealed that only the nonadiabatic dynamics started with the effective forces on the initial electronic state could capture the correct nuclear dynamics. The proposed strategy for modeling condensed-phase nonadiabatic dynamics with atomistic details is readily applied to complex condensed-phase systems.

Doubly Polarized QM/MM with Machine Learning Chaperone Polarizability.

A major shortcoming of semiempirical (SE) molecular orbital methods is their severe underestimation of molecular polarizability compared with experimental and ab initio (AI) benchmark data. In a combined quantum mechanical and molecular mechanical (QM/MM) treatment of solution-phase reactions, solute described by SE methods therefore tends to generate inadequate electronic polarization response to solvent electric fields, which often leads to large errors in free energy profiles. To address this problem, here we present a hybrid framework that improves the response property of SE/MM methods through high-level molecular-polarizability fitting. Specifically, we place on QM atoms a set of corrective polarizabilities (referred to as chaperone polarizabilities), whose magnitudes are determined from machine learning (ML) to reproduce the condensed-phase AI molecular polarizability along the minimum free energy path. These chaperone polarizabilities are then used in a machinery similar to a polarizable force field calculation to compensate for the missing polarization energy in the conventional SE/MM simulations. Because QM atoms in this treatment host SE wave functions as well as classical polarizabilities, both polarized by MM electric fields, we name this method doubly polarized QM/MM (dp-QM/MM). We demonstrate the new method on the free energy simulations of the Menshutkin reaction in water. Using AM1/MM as a base method, we show that ML chaperones greatly reduce the error in the solute molecular polarizability from 6.78 to 0.03 Å3 with respect to the density functional theory benchmark. The chaperone correction leads to ∼10 kcal/mol of additional polarization energy in the product region, bringing the simulated free energy profiles to closer agreement with the experimental results. Furthermore, the solute-solvent radial distribution functions show that the chaperone polarizabilities modify the free energy profiles through enhanced solvation corrections when the system evolves from the charge-neutral reactant state to the charge-separated transition and product states. These results suggest that the dp-QM/MM method, enabled by ML chaperone polarizabilities, provides a very physical remedy for the underpolarization problem in SE/MM-based free energy simulations.

Reaction Path-Force Matching in Collective Variables: Determining Ab Initio QM/MM Free Energy Profiles by Fitting Mean Force.

First-principles determination of free energy profiles for condensed-phase chemical reactions is hampered by the daunting costs associated with configurational sampling on ab initio quantum mechanical/molecular mechanical (AI/MM) potential energy surfaces. Here, we report a new method that enables efficient AI/MM free energy simulations through mean force fitting. In this method, a free energy path in collective variables (CVs) is first determined on an efficient reactive aiding potential. Based on the configurations sampled along the free energy path, correcting forces to reproduce the AI/MM forces on the CVs are determined through force matching. The AI/MM free energy profile is then predicted from simulations on the aiding potential in conjunction with the correcting forces. Such cycles of correction-prediction are repeated until convergence is established. As the instantaneous forces on the CVs sampled in equilibrium ensembles along the free energy path are fitted, this procedure faithfully restores the target free energy profile by reproducing the free energy mean forces. Due to its close connection with the reaction path-force matching (RP-FM) framework recently introduced by us, we designate the new method as RP-FM in collective variables (RP-FM-CV). We demonstrate the effectiveness of this method on a type-II solution-phase SN2 reaction, NH3 + CH3Cl (the Menshutkin reaction), simulated with an explicit water solvent. To obtain the AI/MM free energy profiles, we employed the semiempirical AM1/MM Hamiltonian as the base level for determining the string minimum free energy pathway, along which the free energy mean forces are fitted to various target AI/MM levels using the Hartree-Fock (HF) theory, density functional theory (DFT), and the second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation (MP2) theory as the AI method. The forces on the bond-breaking and bond-forming CVs at both the base and target levels are obtained by force transformation from Cartesian to redundant internal coordinates under the Wilson B-matrix formalism, where the linearized FM is facilitated by the use of spline functions. For the Menshutkin reaction tested, our FM treatment greatly reduces the deviations on the CV forces, originally in the range of 12-33 to ∼2 kcal/mol/Å. Comparisons with the experimental and benchmark AI/MM results, tests of the new method under a variety of simulation protocols, and analyses of the solute-solvent radial distribution functions suggest that RP-FM-CV can be used as an efficient, accurate, and robust method for simulating solution-phase chemical reactions.

Molecular Dynamics Investigation of the Dielectric Decrement of Ion Solutions

AbstractMolecular dynamics simulations, using a classical force field model, have been used to determine the dependence of the static relative dielectric constant of ion solutions with respect to the nature and concentration of the ions and the field strength. The experimentally observed effect of a reduction of the dielectric permittivity due to solvated ions is known as dielectric decrement. We used both the polarization fluctuation at zero field and the constant dielectric displacement method for finite fields to determine the dielectric constant of the bulk solution. All the experimentally observed tendencies of the dielectric decrement could be qualitatively reproduced. The analysis of different solute solvent radial distribution functions indicate that the dielectric decrement arises from the competition between the macroscopic electric field and the local water‐ion interaction. The results suggest that the electric field eventually manages to overcome the local molecular interactions, breaking up the structure of the solvation shell and thus lowering the ion's effect on the dielectric constant. This effect seems to correlate with the solvation energy of the individual ions as well as the type of counter ion, indicating that also long range interactions might play a role. The results can be used to improve especially continuum electrolyte models, used to study electrochemical interfaces, where currently the dielectric decrement is generally not included.

Molecular dynamics study of diffusion of krypton in water at different temperatures

Molecular dynamics study of diffusion of two krypton atoms in 300 SPC/E water molecules at temperatures 293, 303, 313, 323 and 333 K has been carried out. Self-diffusion coefficient of krypton and water along with their mutual diffusion coefficients are estimated. Self-diffusion coefficient for krypton is calculated by using Mean Square Displacement (MSD) method and Velocity Autocorrelation (VACF) method, while that for water is calculated by using MSD method only. The mutual diffusion coefficient is estimated by using the Darken’s relation. The diffusion coefficients are found to follow the Arrhenius behavior. The structural properties of the system have been estimated by the study of solute–solute, solvent–solvent, and solute–solvent Radial Distribution Function (RDF).

Free energy of ion hydration: Interface susceptibility and scaling with the ion size.

Free energy of solvation of a spherical ion in a force-field water is studied by numerical simulations. The focus is on the linear solvation susceptibility connecting the linear response solvation free energy to the squared ion charge. Spherical hard-sphere solutes, hard-sphere ions, and Kihara solutes (Lennard-Jones modified hard-sphere core) are studied here. The scaling of the solvation susceptibility with the solute size significantly deviates from the Born equation. Using empirical offset corrections of the solute size (or the position of the first peak of the solute-solvent distribution function) do not improve the agreement with simulations. We advance a new perspective on the problem by deriving an exact relation for the radial susceptibility function of the interface. This function yields an effective cavity radius in the Born equation calculated from the solute-solvent radial distribution function. We find that the perspective of the local response, assuming significant alteration of the solvent structure by the solute, is preferable compared to the homogeneous approximation assuming intact solvent structure around the solute. The model finds a simple explanation of the asymmetry of hydration between anions and cations in denser water shells around anions and smaller cavity radii arising from the solute-solvent density profiles.

A Theory of Solvation Effects on Viscosity

We formulate a theory for calculating the viscosity of a dilute solution, considering the solute–solvent interaction. We consider an inhomogeneous density distribution of solvent particles caused by the interaction, using the equilibrium solute–solvent radial distribution function. The theory is a microscopic extension of Einstein’s viscosity formula. We formulate the theory by a perturbation expansion, assuming that a solvent particle is much smaller than a solute particle. From the perturbation theory, we obtain hydrodynamic equations with new boundary conditions on the surface of the solute. The theory is applied to a system with a simple radial distribution function.

Temperature dependence of diffusion coefficient of carbon monoxide in water: A molecular dynamics study

In the present work, molecular dynamics simulations of a mixture of carbon monoxide (CO) gas in SPC/E water (H2O) with CO as a solute and water as a solvent have been performed to understand the self-diffusion coefficient of the components, i.e. CO and water along with the mutual diffusion coefficients and structural properties of the system by studying the radial distribution function (RDF) of the components present in the system at different temperatures of 293K, 303K, 313K, 323K, and 333K. The mole fraction of CO in the system is 0.018 and that of water is 0.982. The solvent–solvent, solute–solute and solute–solvent radial distribution functions have been estimated to study the structural properties of the system. The self-diffusion coefficient of CO is calculated using mean square displacement (MSD) and velocity autocorrelation function (VACF) and that of water is estimated using MSD method only. The self-diffusion coefficient of CO agrees within around 20% of the experimental results and that of water agrees within around 10% of the experimental results. The mutual diffusion coefficient of solute–solvent is calculated using Darken's relation. The temperature dependence of self-diffusion coefficients of CO and water and mutual diffusion coefficients of CO in water all follow the Arrhenius behavior from where we estimate the activation energy of the diffusion process. Thus estimated activation energies also agree to experimental values.

Variation and decomposition of the partial molar volume of small gas molecules in different organic solvents derived from molecular dynamics simulations

The partial molar volumes, V(i), of the gas solutes H2, CO, and CO2, solvated in acetone, methanol, heptane, and diethylether are determined computationally in the limit of infinite dilution and standard conditions. Solutions are described with molecular dynamics simulations in combination with the OPLS-aa force field for solvents and customized force field for solutes. V(i) is determined with the direct method, while the composition of V(i) is studied with Kirkwood-Buff integrals (KBIs). Subsequently, the amount of unoccupied space and size of pre-formed cavities in pure solvents is determined. Additionally, the shape of individual solvent cages is analyzed. Calculated V(i) deviate only 3.4 cm(3) mol(-1) (7.1%) from experimental literature values. Experimental V(i) variations across solutions are reproduced qualitatively and also quantitatively in most cases. The KBI analysis identifies differences in solute induced solvent reorganization in the immediate vicinity of H2 (<0.7 nm) and solvent reorganization up to the third solvation shell of CO and CO2 (<1.6 nm) as the origin of V(i) variations. In all solutions, larger V(i) are found in solvents that exhibit weak internal interactions, low cohesive energy density and large compressibility. Weak internal interactions facilitate solvent displacement by thermal solute movement, which enhances the size of solvent cages and thus V(i). Additionally, attractive electrostatic interactions of CO2 and the solvents, which do not depend on internal solvent interactions only, partially reversed the V(i) trends observed in H2 and CO solutions where electrostatic interactions with the solvents are absent. More empty space and larger pre-formed cavities are found in solvents with weak internal interactions, however, no evidence is found that solutes in any considered solvent are accommodated in pre-formed cavities. Individual solvent cages are found to be elongated in the negative direction of solute movement. This wake behind the moving solute is more pronounced in case of mobile H2 and in solvents with weaker internal interactions. However, deviations from a spherical solvent cage shape do not influence solute-solvent radial distribution functions after averaging over all solvent cage orientations and hence do not change V(i). Overall, the applied methodology reproduces V(i) and its variations reliably and the used V(i) decompositions identify the underlying reasons behind observed V(i) variations.

A MOLECULAR DYNAMICS STUDY OF OXYGEN GAS IN WATER AT DIFFERENT TEMPERATURES

Molecular dynamics simulations of a binary mixture of oxygen gas and SPC/E water, with oxygen gas ( O 2) as solute and water as solvent, at oxygen mole fraction of 0.019 have been accomplished at different temperatures 288, 293, 298, 302 and 306 K using Groningen Machine for Chemical Simulations. The solvent–solvent, solute–solute and solute–solvent radial distribution functions (RDFs) have been estimated. The solvent–solvent (water–water) RDF has been found to agree with that obtained from NMR/X-ray data within 7%. Self-diffusion coefficients of both the solvent and the solute have been determined by means of mean-squared displacement curves using Einstein's relation. They are found to agree with experimental results very well. Darken's relation has also been invoked for the determination of mutual diffusion coefficients at the respective temperatures. The analysis of temperature dependence of the diffusion coefficients has revealed that they follow Arrhenius equation to a very good extent and are consistent with the nature of RDF's at the respective temperatures. The estimated activation energies are in excellent agreement with the available experimental data.

Absorption of Carbon Dioxide, Nitrous Oxide, Ethane and Nitrogen by 1-Alkyl-3-methylimidazolium (Cnmim, n = 2,4,6) Tris(pentafluoroethyl)trifluorophosphate Ionic Liquids (eFAP)

We measured the densities of 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium (C(n)mim, n = 2,4,6) tris(pentafluoroethyl)trifluorophosphate ionic liquids (eFAP) as a function of temperature and pressure and their viscosities as a function of temperature. These ionic liquids are less viscous than those based in the same cations but with other anions such as bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide. The ionic liquids studied are only partially miscible with water, their solubility increasing with the size of the alkyl side-chain of the cation and with temperature (from x(H(2)O) = 0.20 ± 0.03 for [C(4)mim][eFAP] at 303.10 K to x(H(2)O) = 0.49 ± 0.07 for [C(6)mim][eFAP] at 315.10 K). The solubility of carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, ethane, and nitrogen in the three ionic liquids was measured as a function of temperature and at pressures close to atmospheric. Carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide are the more soluble gases with mole fraction solubilities of the order of 3 × 10(-2) at 303 K. The solubility of these gases does not increase linearly with the size of the alkyl-side chain of the cation. The solubilities of ethane and nitrogen are much lower than those of carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide (mole fractions 60% and 90% lower, respectively). The higher solubility of CO(2) and N(2)O can be explained by more favorable interactions between the solutes and the polar region of the ionic liquids as shown by the enthalpies of solvation determined experimentally and by the calculation of the site-site solute-solvent radial distribution functions using molecular simulation.

MOLECULAR DYNAMICS STUDY OF DIFFUSION OF DIFFERENT INERT GASES LIKE NEON AND ARGON IN WATER AT DIFFERENT TEMPERATURES

Molecular dynamics study of a binary mixture of inert gases like neon and argon in SPC/E water, with the solute mole fraction of 0.023 have been accomplished at temperatures 288, 293, 298, 303, 308 and 313 K. The solvent–solvent, solute–solute and solute–solvent radial distribution functions have been estimated. The water–water radial distribution function has been found to agree well with the experimental value. Self-diffusion coefficients of both solvent and solutes have been determined by means of respective mean square displacement (MSD) curves using the Einstein's relation. The obtained values for the self-diffusion coefficients of these gases and solvent SPC/E water is found to agree well with available experimental values. The binary diffusion coefficients of these gases in water have then been estimated by using the Darken's relation. The temperature dependence of the diffusion coefficients has also been analyzed. The temperature dependence of estimated values of self-diffusion coefficients of water have been found to obey the Arrhenius relation. Self-diffusion coefficient of neon and argon is found to vary with the temperature according as Arrhenius relation.

Hydration Structure of Cocaine and its Metabolites: A Molecular Dynamics Study

We present molecular dynamics simulations of solvated cocaine and its metabolites in water, using both the Optimized Potentials for Liquid Simulations (OPLS) force field and the same force field but with Quantum Theory of Atoms In Molecules (QTAIM) atomic charges. We focus on the microscopic aspects of solvation, e.g. hydrogen bonds, and investigate influence of partial charges applied. Hydrophobicity or hydrophicility of these molecules were analyzed in terms of solute–solvent radial distribution functions and, for their most hydrophilic atoms, by spatial density functions. These hydration studies allowed us to classify these molecules according to their total coordination numbers, from the most hydrated metabolite to least hydrated, and this trend matches the degree of each metabolite is excreted in urine of patients with a high consumption of cocaine. Finally, we observed that QTAIM charges provide a more physically reasonable description of electrostatic environment of these solvated molecules than those of OPLS charges.

Solute–solvent friction kernels and solution properties of methyl oxazoline–phenyl oxazoline (MeOx–PhOx) copolymers in binary ethanol–water mixtures

Solvent mixtures often alter the solubility of polymeric substances. Statistical copolymers made from 2-methyl-2-oxazoline (MeOx) and 2-phenyl-2-oxazoline (PhOx) are known for their varying solubilities in pure ethanol, pure water and in binary mixtures of ethanol-water. Constrained Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations have been carried out with an aim to explain the varying solubilities of the statistical MeOx-PhOx copolymers. The solute-solvent dynamic friction kernels calculated through constrained MD simulations corroborate the solubility pattern in these copolymers. The solvation characteristics have been analyzed in terms of the solute-solvent radial distribution functions (RDFs). The ethanol-soluble MeOx-PhOx copolymers exhibit characteristic solute-composition dependence in the dynamic solute-solvent friction kernels, indicating the strength of the solute-solvent correlations. The aggressive solvation by the ethanol molecules in the binary solvent mixtures has been brought out by the O(solute)-H(ethanol) RDFs which exhibit a characteristic dependence on the ethanol content in the solvent composition. The corresponding O(solute)-H(water) RDFs are devoid of any such composition dependence. For all the MeOx-PhOx copolymers, the O-site solvation is strongly dominated by the water molecules and the N-sites are solvated equally by both ethanol and water molecules.

Effect of Fluorination and Size of the Alkyl Side-Chain on the Solubility of Carbon Dioxide in 1-Alkyl-3-methylimidazolium Bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide Ionic Liquids

It is proven in this work that it is possible to significantly increase the carbon dioxide uptake by an ionic liquid relying on physical interactions only. The solubility and thermodynamics of solvation of carbon dioxide in the ionic liquids 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium bis[trifluoromethylsulfonyl]amide [C(8)mim][Ntf(2)], 1-decyl-3-methylimidazolium bis[trifluoromethylsulfonyl]amide [C(10)mim][Ntf(2)], and 1-(3,3,4,4,5,5,6,6,7,7,8,8,8-tridecafluorooctyl)-3-methylimidazolium bis[trifluoromethylsulfonyl]amide [C(8)H(4)F(13)mim][Ntf(2)] were determined experimentally between 298 and 343 K at pressures close to atmospheric. The solubility of carbon dioxide is significantly higher in the fluorine-substituted ionic liquid with Henry's law constants at 303 K of 33.3 and 30.7 bar for [C(8)mim][Ntf(2)] and [C(10)mim][Ntf(2)], respectively, and of 28.0 bar for [C(8)H(4)F(13)mim][Ntf(2)]. Molecular simulation was used for interpreting the molecular mechanisms of solvation of carbon dioxide in the studied ionic liquids and coherent molecular mechanisms of solvation are proposed in light of the solute-solvent radial distribution functions. It is shown that the increase of the size of the hydrogenated or fluorinated alkyl chain in the imidazolium cation does not lead to a steady augmentation of the gaseous uptake by the liquid probably due to an increase of the nonpolar domains of the ionic liquid, carbon dioxide being solvated preferentially in the charged regions of the solvent.

Claisen Rearrangements: Insight into Solvent Effects and “on Water” Reactivity from QM/MM Simulations

An "on water" environment, defined by the absence of water solubility of the reactants, has been reported to provide increased rate accelerations, yields, and specificity for several types of organic reaction classes compared to organic solvents. The aromatic Claisen rearrangements of allyl p-R-phenyl ethers (R = CH(3), Br, and OCH(3)) and allyl naphthyl ether have been investigated to determine the origin of the on water effect using QM/MM Monte Carlo calculations and free-energy perturbation theory. The simulations indicate that on water rate enhancements for the rearrangements are derived from the ability of the interfacial waters to stabilize the polar transition state via enhanced hydrogen bonding at the oil/water interface. The position and orientation of the aromatic ethers at the interface are crucial factors affecting solvent accessibility during the reaction pathway; computed solute-solvent energy pair distributions and radial distribution functions showed that hydrophobic substituents on the solute provided a more polar solvent environment than hydrophilic substituents by tilting the reacting oxygen toward the water surface. Calculations in 16 different solvents accurately reproduced the experimental trend of increased rates correlated to increasing solvent polarity. Hydrophobic effects did not provide a substantial contribution to the lowering of the free energy activation barrier (<0.5 kcal/mol), and solvent polarizability via a polarizable force field was also found to be negligible in the observed rate accelerations. New insight into solvent effects for the Claisen rearrangement is presented herein, and a QM/MM approach for computing reactions on a liquid surface is highlighted.

The Importance of Excluded Solvent Volume Effects in Computing Hydration Free Energies

Continuum dielectric methods such as the Born equation have been widely used to compute the electrostatic component of the solvation free energy, DeltaG(solv)(elec), because they do not need to include solvent molecules explicitly and are thus far less costly compared to molecular simulations. All of these methods can be derived from Gauss Law of Maxwell's equations, which yields an analytical solution for the solvation free energy, DeltaG(Born), when the solute is spherical. However, in Maxwell's equations, the solvent is assumed to be a structureless continuum, whereas in reality, the near-solute solvent molecules are highly structured unlike far-solute bulk solvent. Since we have recently reformulated Gauss Law of Maxwell's equations to incorporate the near-solute solvent structure by considering excluded solvent volume effects, we have used it in this work to derive an analytical solution for the hydration free energy of an ion. In contrast to continuum solvent models, which assume that the normalized induced solvent electric dipole density P(n) is constant, P(n) mimics that observed from simulations. The analytical formula for the ionic hydration free energy shows that the Born radius, which has been used as an adjustable parameter to fit experimental hydration free energies, is no longer ill defined but is related to the radius and polarizability of the water molecule, the hydration number, and the first peak position of the solute-solvent radial distribution function. The resulting DeltaG(solv)(elec) values are shown to be close to the respective experimental numbers.

Interactions of Fluorinated Gases with Ionic Liquids: Solubility of CF4, C2F6, and C3F8 in Trihexyltetradecylphosphonium Bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide

The interactions between ionic liquids and totally fluorinated alkanes are investigated by associating gas solubility measurements with molecular simulation calculations. Experimental values for the solubility of perfluoromethane, perfluoroethane, and perfluoropropane in one ionic liquidtrihexyltetradecylphophonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide [P 6,6,6,14][Ntf 2]are reported between 303 and 343 K and close to atmospheric pressure. All mole fraction solubilities decrease with increasing temperature. From the variation of Henry's law constants with temperature, the thermodynamic functions of solvation were calculated. The precision of the experimental data, considered as the average absolute deviation of the Henry's law constants from appropriate smoothing equations, is always better than +/-3%. By the analysis of the differences between the solute-solvent radial distribution functions of perfluoromethane and perfluoropropane obtained by molecular simulation, it was possible to explain why solubility increases with the size of the perfluoroalkane. The trend of solubility is explained on the basis of the location of the solute with respect to the solvent ions as well as on the differences in the solute-solvent energies of interaction.
