Linearly-chirped fibre gratings manufactured using a step-chirp, phase-masking technique have been used to dispersively temporally broaden the 380 fs pulses from an erbium fibre soliton laser operating at 1.56 μm by factors of greater than forty and for the first time been shown to be capable of completely recovering the original pulsewidth via reciprocal reflection.
