Fire and salvage logging increased recalcitrant soil organic matter and reduced soil functionality in Mediterranean pine forests.

Postfire management actions are used to mitigate damage caused by wildfires. Salvage logging, often employed to restore ecosystem functions in burnt stands, plays an essential role in reducing economic losses and the burn severity of future wildfires. However, its ecological implications for soil functionality still need to be understood, especially in the Mediterranean basin, which is prone to erosion and desertification. This study aimed to investigate the effects of fire on (i) soil organic matter (SOM) quality and composition using differential scanning calorimetry-thermogravimetry (DSC-TG) and solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (13C CPMAS NMR) and (ii) phosphorus (P) forms using solid-state 31P NMR spectroscopy in a wildfire that affected 3200 ha in southeastern Spain in July 2017. One year after the fire, we monitored four Pinus halepensis Mill. stand categories based on soil burn severity (SBS): unburnt, low SBS, high SBS and high SBS areas with salvage logging (n=36, nine plots per SBS level). We collected soil samples and analysed soil pH, SOM content and SOM quality, along with biological activity indicators (carbon biomass, basal respiration, β-glucosidase, phosphatase activities) and P forms. We ran ANOVA statistical tests to identify significant differences in soil properties among SBS levels. We also established general linear regressions of thermo-recalcitrance values and aromaticity with biological soil quality indices to compare both techniques for detecting changes in SOM quality and composition. The results indicated that fire increased soil pH (up to 0.3), particularly in the plots with higher SBS levels. SOM decreased significantly with increasing SBS level (down to < 5 % at the high SBS level), with a shift from labile compounds (carbohydrates) to more recalcitrant ones (aromatics). Organic P forms were depleted, while orthophosphate levels rose, increasing the risk of irreversible fixation. This study also highlights that DSC-TG is a cost-effective technique for assessing SOM quality changes. Understanding these effects is essential for developing policies to conserve and restore fire-affected areas and to promote practices that enhance soil functionality and resilience.

Phosphaarsenes - Combining Phospha- and Arsa-Wittig-Reagents.

Dipnictenes of the type RPn=PnR (Pn=P, As, Sb, Bi) can be viewed as dimers of the corresponding pnictinidenes R-Pn. Phosphanylidene- and arsanylidenephosphoranes (R-Pn(PMe3); Pn=P, As) have been shown to be versatile synthetic surrogates for the delivery of pnictinidene fragments. We now report that thermal treatment of 1 : 1 mixtures of R-P(PMe3) and R'-As(PMe3) gives access to arsaphosphenes of the type RP=AsR'. Three examples are presented and the properties and reactivity of Mes*P=AsDipTer (1) (Mes*=2,4,6-tBu3-C6H2; DipTer=2,6-(2,6-iPr2C6H3)2-C6H3) were studied in detail. Solid state 31P NMR spectroscopy revealed a large 31P NMR chemical shift anisotropy with a span of ca. 920 ppm for 1 while computational methods were employed to investigate this pronounced magnetic deshielding of the P atom in 1. In the presence of the carbene IMe4 (IMe4=:C(MeNCMe)2) 1 is shown to be split into the corresponding NHC adducts Mes*P(IMe4) and DipTerAs(IMe4), which is additionally shown for diarsenes.

Exploring Deactivation Reasons of Biomass-Based Phosphorus-Doped Carbon as a Metal-Free Catalyst in the Catalytic Dehydroaromatization of n-Heptane.

Catalytic dehydroaromatization of n-alkanes into high-value aromatics has garnered extensive interest from both academia and industry. Our group has previously reported that phosphorus-doped carbon materials exhibit high selectivity for C-H bond activation in the dehydroaromatization of n-hexane. In this study, using n-heptane as a probe, we synthesized biomass-based phosphorus-doped carbon catalysts to investigate the impact of hydrogen heat treatment and carbon deposition on catalyst structure. Despite achieving an initial conversion of n-heptane at approximately 99.6%, with a toluene selectivity of 87.9%, the catalyst activity fell quickly. Moreover, longer hydrogen treatment time and higher hydrogen concentrations were found to accelerate catalyst deactivation. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and N2 adsorption measurements (BET) indicated that a small amount of coke deposition was not the primary cause of catalyst deactivation. Temperature-programmed desorption of ammonia gas (NH3-TPD) revealed a significant decrease in acid-active functional groups. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and solid-state 31P NMR spectroscopy confirmed the reduction of active central phosphorus species. These results suggest that catalyst deactivation primarily arises from the decrease in acidity and the partial reduction of phosphorus-containing groups, leading to a substantial loss of active sites. This work contributes new perspectives to understanding the properties and design improvements of metal-free carbon catalysts.

Covalent Functionalization of Black Phosphorus Nanosheets with Dichlorocarbenes for Enhanced Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Two-dimensional black phosphorus (BP) has emerged as a perspective material for various micro- and opto-electronic, energy, catalytic, and biomedical applications. Chemical functionalization of black phosphorus nanosheets (BPNS) is an important pathway for the preparation of materials with improved ambient stability and enhanced physical properties. Currently, the covalent functionalization of BPNS with highly reactive intermediates, such as carbon-free radicals or nitrenes, has been widely implemented to modify the material's surface. However, it should be noted that this field requires more in-depth research and new developments. Herein, we report for the first time the covalent carbene functionalization of BPNS using dichlorocarbene as a functionalizing agent. The P-C bond formation in the obtained material (BP-CCl2) has been confirmed by Raman, solid-state 31P NMR, IR, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy methods. The BP-CCl2 nanosheets exhibit an enhanced electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance with an overpotential of 442 mV at -1 mA cm-2 and a Tafel slope of 120 mV dec-1, outperforming the pristine BPNS.

In-Situ Electrochemical Exfoliation and Methylation of Black Phosphorus into Functionalized Phosphorene Nanosheets.

Two-dimensional black phosphorus (BP) has attracted great attention as a perspective material for various applications. The chemical functionalization of BP is an important pathway for the preparation of materials with improved stability and enhanced intrinsic electronic properties. Currently, most of the methods for BP functionalization with organic substrates require either the use of low-stable precursors of highly reactive intermediates or the use of difficult-to-manufacture and flammable BP intercalates. Herein we report a facile route for simultaneous electrochemical exfoliation and methylation of BP. Conducting the cathodic exfoliation of BP in the presence of iodomethane makes it possible to generate highly active methyl radicals, which readily react with the electrode's surface yielding the functionalized material. The covalent functionalization of BP nanosheets with the P-C bond formation has been proven by various microscopic and spectroscopic methods. The functionalization degree estimated by solid-state 31P NMR spectroscopy analysis reached 9.7%.

Gaseous- and Condensed-Phase Activities of Some Reactive P- and N-Containing Fire Retardants in Polystyrenes.

Polystyrene (PS) was modified by covalently binding P-, P-N- and/or N- containing fire-retardant moieties through co- or ter-polymerization reactions of styrene with diethyl(acryloyloxymethyl)phosphonate (DEAMP), diethyl-p-vinylbenzyl phosphonate (DEpVBP), acrylic acid-2-[(diethoxyphosphoryl)methylamino]ethyl ester (ADEPMAE) and maleimide (MI). In the present study, the condensed-phase and the gaseous-phase activities of the abovementioned fire retardants within the prepared co- and ter-polymers were evaluated for the first time. Pyrolysis-Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry was employed to identify the volatile products formed during the thermal decomposition of the modified polymers. Benzaldehyde, α-methylstyrene, acetophenone, triethyl phosphate and styrene (monomer, dimer and trimer) were detected in the gaseous phase following the thermal cracking of fire-retardant groups and through main chain scissions. In the case of PS modified with ADEPMAE, the evolution of pyrolysis gases was suppressed by possible inhibitory actions of triethyl phosphate in the gaseous phase. The reactive modification of PS by simultaneously incorporating P- (DEAMP or DEpVBP) and N- (MI) monomeric units, in the chains of ter-polymers, resulted in a predominantly condensed-phase mode of action owing to synergistic P and N interactions. The solid-state 31P NMR spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy/Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy, Inductively-Coupled Plasma/Optical Emission Spectroscopy and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy of char residues, obtained from ter-polymers, confirmed the retention of the phosphorus species in their structures.

Incorporation of 2D black phosphorus (2D-bP) in P3HT/PMMA mixtures for novel materials with tuned spectroscopic, morphological and electric features

Novel materials based on mixtures of immiscible polymers, namely poly (3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) and poly (methyl methacrylate) (P3HT/PMMA), with dispersed phosphorene (2D-bP), obtained by liquid-phase exfoliation (LPE) of black phosphorus (bP) or by in situ polymerization technologies, were prepared for the first time. The new materials were characterized by Raman, UV–Vis, solid state 31P NMR spectroscopies, X-ray diffractometry (XRD), size exclusion chromatography (SEC), morphological (SEM), topographical (AFM) and thermal analysis (DSC and TGA) to investigate the physio-chemical features of both components, polymers and phosphorene owing the composites preparation. Good distribution of the nanoflakes, which preserve their structure and resulted intercalated and partially exfoliated, was achieved thanks to established interactions at the interface between the 2D-bP flakes and the polymers, especially with the P3HT phase, changing the morphology and topography of the mixtures. The preferential allocation of 2D-bP in P3HT, besides inducing a particular polymers phase segregation (a vertical phase separation with P3HT continuous phase onto the surface) encouraged testing these materials as an active layer in Organic Field Effect Transistor (OFET) devices. The data collected showed that the introduction of 2D-bP in P3HT/PMMA polymer mixtures is somewhat promising, giving an increase in mobility up to an order of magnitude with respect to the corresponding 2D-bP-free mixture.

Mesopore-selective incorporation of strong Brønsted acid catalytic sites via aluminium grafting on hierarchically porous siliceous MFI zeolite

Abstract Post-synthetic Al grafting onto the surface silanols in mesoporous MFI zeolite has been investigated in an attempt to obtain a model catalytic material that possesses strong Bronsted acid sites at mesopore surfaces of the zeolite, but not inside the microporous framework. To this end, a siliceous MFI zeolite with a mesopore/micropore hierarchy was synthesized using a meso-micro dual structure-directing diammonium surfactant. The hierarchically porous zeolite was treated with anhydrous AlCl3 for the formation of Si–O–Al bonding with silanols on the mesopore surfaces. According to solid-state 31P NMR spectroscopy of the surface-adsorbed phosphine oxides and catalytic activity for decalin cracking, the Al-grafting treatment performed in the conventional manner resulted in the formation of weak Bronsted acid sites, similar to Al grafting on SBA-15 mesoporous silica. To obtain strong Bronsted acid sites, we have developed a method of heating the AlCl3-grafted zeolite in a controlled-humidity chamber before calcination. The resultant zeolite was catalytically active for cracking of hydrocarbons requiring strong acid sites, but not for methanol-to-hydrocarbon conversion. The results support that the moisture treatment caused a local reconstruction of the initially grafted Al–O–Si framework portion to a strong Bronsted acid site. In addition, our model catalytic zeolite material unveiled the catalytic activity of Bronsted acid sites at the mesopore surfaces in hierarchically porous zeolite in n-octane cracking. Furthermore, we confirmed that this method was effective for other mesoporous MFI zeolites obtained through a post-synthetic desilication route.

Enhancing the activity of membrane remodeling epsin-peptide by trimerization

Modulating the structural dynamics of biomembranes by inducing bilayer curvature and lipid packing defects has been highlighted as a practical tool to modify membrane-dependent cellular processes. Previously, we have reported on an amphipathic helical peptide derived from the N-terminal segment (residues 1–18, EpN18) of epsin-1, which can promote membrane remodeling including lipid packing defects in cell membranes. However, a high concentration is required to exhibit a pronounced effect. In this study, we demonstrate a significant increase in the membrane-remodeling effect of EpN18 by constructing a branched EpN18 homotrimer. Both monomer and trimer could enhance cell internalization of octaarginine (R8), a cell-penetrating peptide. The EpN18 trimer, however, promoted the uptake of R8 at an 80-fold lower concentration than the monomer. Analysis of the generalized polarization of a polarity-sensitive dye (di-4-ANEPPDHQ) revealed a higher efficacy of trimeric EpN18 in loosening the lipid packing in the cell membrane. Circular dichroism measurements in the presence of lipid vesicles showed that the EpN18 trimer has a higher α-helix content compared with the monomer. The stronger ability of the EpN18 trimer to impede negative bilayer curvature is also corroborated by solid-state 31P NMR spectroscopy. Hence, trimerizing peptides can be considered a promising approach for an exponential enhancement of their membrane-remodeling performance.

Thermal and Calorimetric Evaluations of Some Chemically Modified Carbohydrate-Based Substrates with Phosphorus-Containing Groups.

In the present article, we report on the chemical modifications of some carbohydrate-based substrates, such as potato starch, dextran, β-cyclodextrin, agar agar and tamarind, by reacting with diethylchlorophosphate (DECP), in dispersions in dichloromethane (DCM), in the presence of triethylamine (TEA) as the base. The modified substrates, after recovery and purification, were analyzed for their chemical constitutions, thermal stabilities and calorimetric properties using a variety of analytical techniques. These included: solid-state 31P NMR, inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and pyrolysis combustion flow calorimetry (PCFC). The unmodified counterparts were also subjected to the same set of analyses with a view to serving as controls. Phosphorus analyses, primarily through ICP-OES on the recovered samples, showed different degrees of incorporation. Such observations were optionally verified through solid-state 31P NMR spectroscopy. The thermograms of the modified substrates were noticeably different from the unmodified counterparts, both in terms of the general profiles and the amounts of char residues produced. Such observations correlated well with the relevant parameters obtained through PCFC runs. Overall, the modified systems containing phosphorus were found to be less combustible than the parent substrates, and thus can be considered as promising matrices for environmentally benign fire-resistant coatings.

Crystal structure and migration paths of alkaline ions in NaVPO4F.

A sample with a nominal composition 'NaVPO4F' is prepared by mechanochemically assisted solid-state synthesis using quenching. A detailed study of its crystal and local structure is conducted by means of XRD and FTIR and solid-state 31P NMR spectroscopies in comparison with Na3V2(PO4)2F3. It is shown that the as-prepared 'NaVPO4F' has a multiphase composition, including NaVPO4F as the main phase and Na3V2(PO4)2F3 and Na2.57V4P4O17F as the side products. The crystal structure of NaVPO4F is described in the monoclinic C2/c space group. It is characterized by negligible V3+/V4+ oxidation with the corresponding F-/O2- substitution and the presence of structural disordering. Using the Voronoi-Dirichlet partition (VDP) method, the Na+ and Li+ migration pathways in Tavorite-like NaVPO4F and closely related LiVPO4F (with the triclinic structure, P1[combining macron] S.G.) are analyzed. While the Na+ migration is suppressed in both cases, the Na+/Li+ ion exchange in NaVPO4F with the formation of monoclinic LiVPO4F could occur, but is difficult due to the sodium immobility rather than the instability of the lithium derivatives as was concluded from the DFT calculations.

Molecular speciation of phosphorus in phosphogypsum waste by solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy

Phosphogypsum (PG), a waste by-product of the phosphate fertilizer industry as well as a point-source P contaminant, has caused serious environmental problems particularly in estuarine and coastal regions. However, in-depth understanding of P speciation in PG, which is critical for its restoration and management, remains largely unknown. Using solid-state 31P NMR spectroscopy, density functional theory calculations of the NMR parameters and NanoSIMS, we for the first time reported that P in PG ubiquitously exists as phosphate incorporated into gypsum and minor fluorapatite. The occasional presences of mineral phosphate phases mainly associated with Ca and Al were also detected. The molecular environment of the incorporated phosphate is HPO42− substituting for SO42− in the gypsum lattice with the H atom away from the H2O molecules and almost parallel to the a–c plane. A high spatial heterogeneity was observed for the distribution of this phosphate species in PG at the submicron scale. Upon heating, at least 64% of the incorporated phosphate could be converted to the easy-to-recover fluorapatite or amorphous calcium phosphate by thermal treatments at above 750 °C for 2–4 h. This information of P speciation transformation may pave a solid basement for the sustainable recovery of P from PG.

Extraction and quantification of polyphosphates in activated sludge from waste water treatment plants by 31P NMR spectroscopy

Polyphosphate (poly-P) is a major constituent in activated sludge from wastewater treatment plants with enhanced biological phosphorus removal due to poly-P synthesis by poly-P accumulating organisms where it plays an important role for recovery of phosphorus from waste water. Our aim was to develop a reliable protocol for poly-P quantification by 31P NMR spectroscopy. This has so far been complicated by the risks of inefficient extraction and poly-P hydrolysis in the extracts. A protocol for complete extraction, identification and quantification of poly-P in activated sludge from a waste water treatment plant was identified based on test and evaluation of existing extraction protocols in combination with poly-P determination and quantification by solution and solid state 31P NMR spectroscopy. The total poly-P middle group content was quantified by solid state NMR for comparison with the poly-P middle groups quantified by solution NMR, which is novel. Three different extraction protocols previously used in literature were compared: 1) a single 0.25 M NaOH-0.05 M EDTA extraction, 2) a 0.05 M EDTA pre-extraction followed by a 0.25 M NaOH main extraction and 3) a 0.05 M EDTA pre-extraction followed by a 0.25 M NaOH-0.05 M EDTA main extraction. The results showed that the extraction protocol 2 was optimal for fresh activated sludge, extracting 10.8 ± 0.4 to 11.4 ± 1.2 mgP/gDW poly-P. Extraction protocols 1 and 3 extracted less than 9.4 ± 0.5 mgP/gDW poly-P. A comparison of the quantification of poly-P by 31P solution NMR and by 31P solid state NMR spectroscopy of lyophilised activated sludge showed 86 ± 9% extraction efficiency of poly-P, which confirms that the extraction protocol recovered most of the poly-P from the samples without pronounced poly-P degradation.

A Heptanuclear Copper Iodide Nanocluster.

Nanoscale molecular clusters are attractive for the design of materials exhibiting original functions and properties. In particular, copper iodide clusters of high nuclearity are well-known for their stimuli-responsive luminescence properties. The synthesis and characterization of an unprecedented copper(I) iodide molecular cluster based on an original heptanuclear inorganic core are reported. This nanometer-size cluster is formulated as [Cu7I7(P(C6H4CF3)3)6(CH3CN)] and its novel structure has been characterized by X-ray diffraction and multinuclear solid-state 63Cu, 31P, 13C, 19F, and 1H NMR spectroscopy. The photoluminescence properties of this cluster have been studied at variable temperature. Density functional theory calculations have been performed on this large molecular structure and allow one to rationalize the observed luminescence properties. This study highlights the crucial role of cuprophilic interactions in molecular copper iodide clusters for exhibiting photoactive properties.

Unexpected effects of inorganic phosphate glass on crystallization and thermo-rheological behavior of polyethylene terephthalate

The effects of ultra-low glass transition temperature (Tg) phosphate glass (Pglass) on the thermal, morphological, rheological, mechanical, and crystallization properties of hybrid Pglass/poly(eththylene terephthalate)(PET) were investigated. Nano- and micro-scale distribution of the Pglass in the PET polymer matrix was observed. The polydispersed Pglass in the PET matrix functioned as a nucleation agent, resulting in increasing crystallization temperature. The Pglass in the PET matrix decreased the Tg, indicating a plasticizing effect of the Pglass in the hybrids that was confirmed by the significantly decreased complex viscosity of the PET matrix. In addition, with increasing temperature, a non-terminal behavior of the viscoelastic properties occurred due to the hybrid structural changes and improved miscibility of the hybrid components. Further, the obtained solid-state variable temperature 31P and 1H NMR spectroscopy results showed strong Pglass concentration dependency of the interactions at the PET-Pglass interface.

Investigation of amorphous and crystalline phosphates in magnesium phosphate ceramics with solid-state 1H and 31P NMR spectroscopy

Magnesium phosphate ceramics are chemically-bonded ceramics for bioengineering and civil engineering applications. Information about the nature of the reaction products, especially the amorphous fraction, and their role in the setting reaction, essential for linking reaction mechanisms to microstructure and performance of ceramics, is lacking. By exploiting 1H and 31P magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, in addition to the crystalline reaction product (MKP), two amorphous phases, characterized by two distinct proton and phosphorous environments, have been identified. The results pointed to amorphous hydrated orthophosphate compounds which are the precursors of MKP. They show different 1H spin-lattice relaxation dynamics, and, higher water mobility with respect to MKP. Although these amorphous precursors should not be crypto-structural variants of MKP, they likely host similar structural units. Conversion into MKP is thought to occur through relatively minor rearrangements, as in Ca phosphate hydrates. The new information provided in this work allows us to propose a model for the setting reaction based on an existing theory involving a densification process, analogue to sol-gel processing of ceramics, coherent with results from small angle neutron scattering and mechanisms predicted by reaction kinetics analysis.

Spray-Dried Thiolated Chitosan-Coated Sodium Alginate Multilayer Microparticles for Vaginal HIV Microbicide Delivery.

It is hypothesized that novel thiolated chitosan-coated multilayer microparticles (MPs) with enhanced drug loading are more mucoadhesive than uncoated MPs and safe in vivo for vaginal delivery of topical anti-HIV microbicide. Formulation optimization is achieved through a custom experimental design and the alginate (AG) MPs cores are prepared using the spray drying method. The optimal MPs are then coated with the thiolated chitosan (TCS) using a layer-by-layer method. The morphological analysis, in situ drug payload, in vitro drug release profile, and mucoadhesion potential of the MPs are carried out using scanning electron microscopy, solid-state 31P NMR spectroscopy, UV spectroscopy, fluorescence imaging and periodic acid Schiff method, respectively. The cytotoxicity and preclinical safety of MPs are assessed on human vaginal (VK2/E6E7) and endocervical (End1/E6E7) epithelial cell lines and in female C57BL/6 mice, respectively. The results show that the MPs are successfully formulated with an average diameter ranging from 2 to 3μm with a drug loading of 7-12% w/w. The drug release profile of these MPs primarily follows the Baker-Lonsdale and Korsmeyer-Peppas models. The MPs exhibit high mucoadhesion (20-50 folds) compared to native AGMPs. The multilayer MPs are noncytotoxic. Histological and immunochemical analysis of the mice genital tract shows neither signs of damage nor inflammatory cell infiltrate. These data highlight the potential use of TCS-coated AG-based multilayer MPs templates for the topical vaginal delivery of anti-HIV/AIDS microbicides.

Discovery and isolation of the trans-isomers of two 1 : 2-type lanthanide-containing monolacunary Dawson-type tungstophosphates: [LnIII(α2-P2W17O61)2]17− (Ln = La, Ce)

Two novel trans-isomers of 1 : 2-type lanthanide-containing monolacunary Dawson-type tungstophosphates [Ln(α2-P2W17O61)2]17- (Ln = LaIII (1), CeIII (2)) were successfully isolated and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, TG, and 31P NMR studies. Both polyanions 1 and 2 consist of one Ln3+ ion sanwiched between two monolacunary Dawson-type tungstophosphates fragments [α2-P2W17O61]10- oriented at 180° with respect to each other. The solid-state and solution 31P NMR spectroscopy revealed that the trans-[Ce(α2-P2W17O61)2]17- species probably quickly isomerizes to the cis-isomer species in solution.

Hydrothermal Synthesis and Characterization of Bio-Sourced Macroporous Zinc Phosphates Prepared with Casein Protein

The development of an original and simple procedure of hydrothermal porous biosourced zinc phosphates synthesis from casein protein is reported in this study. The synthesis procedure does not require additional phosphorus source and structure-directing agent for macroporosity formation. The formation of zinc phosphates has been investigated as a function of the pH of the starting mixture (4.5–14.0) and of the temperature of calcination (from 150 to 750 °C). A material composed of hopeite (Zn3(PO4)2·4H2O) and casein was obtained after synthesis at pH 4.5 and 100 °C from a mixture of casein and zinc nitrate solutions. Macroporous zinc phosphates composed of α-Zn3(PO4)2 and α-Zn2P2O7 with large porous size distribution (pore diameter between 350 to 1000 nm) were successfully obtained after the complete casein decomposition at 750 °C. Samples were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, solid-state 31P NMR spectroscopy, thermal analysis, scanning electron microscopy, nitrogen adsorption, and by fluorescence spectroscopy. The macroporous zinc phosphates have a good stability in water for at least 24 h with no detectable change in their structure, porosity, and crystal morphology.

Enclathration of X@La4 Tetrahedra in Channels of Zn–P Frameworks in La3Zn4P6X (X = Cl, Br)

Two new quaternary lanthanum zinc phosphide-halides were synthesized via high-temperature solid-state reactions. Their complex crystal structures were determined by a combination of X-ray diffraction and advanced solid-state 31P NMR spectroscopy. La3Zn4P6Cl and La3Zn4P6.6Br0.8 share a common structural feature: a polyanionic Zn–P framework with large channels hosting complex one-dimensional cations. The cations are built from X@La4 tetrahedral chains with X = Cl (La3Zn4P6Cl) or Br0.8P0.2 (La3Zn4P6.6Br0.8). The X@La4 tetrahedra share two vertices forming one-dimensional chains. To accommodate larger bromine-containing cations the Zn–P framework is rearranged by breaking and forming several Zn–P and P–P bonds. This results in the formation of a unique [P3]3– cycle, which is isoelectronic to cyclopropane. Analysis of the electron localization and orbital overlaps confirmed the presence of different chemical bonding in the Zn–P networks in the Cl- and Br-containing compounds.
