The Effects of Including Farside Observations on In Situ Predictions of Heliospheric Models

A significant challenge facing heliospheric models is the lack of full Sun observational coverage. The lack of information about the farside photospheric magnetic field necessitates the use of various techniques to approximate the structure and appearance of this field. However, a recently developed technique that uses He ii 304 Å emission observed by the Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO) enables developing a magnetic flux proxy by imaging of active regions on the far side of the Sun. Incorporating information about these active regions on the far side of the Sun may have the potential to drastically improve heliospheric models. In this work, we run multiple heliospheric models with and without farside information obtained from STEREO observations of He ii 304 Å emission and compare the predicted in situ measurements from the models with real in situ data from STEREO and Earth. We find that although there are noticeable quantitative differences between the in situ predictions from the two models, they are dwarfed by the overall disagreement between the heliospheric model and the actual in situ data. Nevertheless, our results indicate that active regions that significantly change the ratio of open-to-closed and open-to-total flux create the biggest change in the predicted in situ measurements.

Solar Eruptions in Nested Magnetic Flux Systems

The magnetic topology of erupting regions on the Sun is a key factor in the energy buildup and release, and the subsequent evolution of flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs). The presence/absence of null points and separatrices dictates whether and where current sheets form and magnetic reconnection occurs. Numerical simulations show that energy buildup and release via reconnection in the simplest configuration with a null, the embedded bipole, is a universal mechanism for solar eruptions. Here we demonstrate that a magnetic topology with nested bipoles and two nulls can account for more complex dynamics, such as failed eruptions and CME–jet interactions. We investigate the stalled eruption of a nested configuration on 2013 July 13 in NOAA Active Region 11791, in which a small bipole is embedded within a large transequatorial pseudo-streamer containing a null. In the studied event, the inner active region erupted, ejecting a small flux rope behind a shock accompanied by a flare; the flux rope then reconnected with pseudo-streamer flux and, rather than escaping intact, mainly distorted the pseudo-streamer null into a current sheet. EUV and coronagraph images revealed a weak shock and a faint collimated outflow from the pseudo-streamer. We analyzed Solar Dynamics Observatory and Solar TErrestrial RElations Observatory observations and compared the inferred magnetic evolution and dynamics with three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamics simulations of a simplified representation of this nested fan-spine system. The results suggest that the difference between breakout reconnection at the inner null and at the outer null naturally accounts for the observed weak jet and stalled ejection. We discuss the general implications of our results for failed eruptions.

The first widespread solar energetic particle event observed by Solar Orbiter on 2020 November 29

Context.On 2020 November 29, the first widespread solar energetic particle (SEP) event of solar cycle 25 was observed at four widely separated locations in the inner (≲1 AU) heliosphere. Relativistic electrons as well as protons with energies > 50 MeV were observed by Solar Orbiter (SolO), Parker Solar Probe, the Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO)-A and multiple near-Earth spacecraft. The SEP event was associated with an M4.4 class X-ray flare and accompanied by a coronal mass ejection and an extreme ultraviolet (EUV) wave as well as a type II radio burst and multiple type III radio bursts.Aims.We present multi-spacecraft particle observations and place them in context with source observations from remote sensing instruments and discuss how such observations may further our understanding of particle acceleration and transport in this widespread event.Methods.Velocity dispersion analysis (VDA) and time shift analysis (TSA) were used to infer the particle release times at the Sun. Solar wind plasma and magnetic field measurements were examined to identify structures that influence the properties of the energetic particles such as their intensity. Pitch angle distributions and first-order anisotropies were analyzed in order to characterize the particle propagation in the interplanetary medium.Results.We find that during the 2020 November 29 SEP event, particles spread over more than 230° in longitude close to 1 AU. The particle onset delays observed at the different spacecraft are larger as the flare–footpoint angle increases and are consistent with those from previous STEREO observations. Comparing the timing when the EUV wave intersects the estimated magnetic footpoints of each spacecraft with particle release times from TSA and VDA, we conclude that a simple scenario where the particle release is only determined by the EUV wave propagation is unlikely for this event. Observations of anisotropic particle distributions at SolO, Wind, and STEREO-A do not rule out that particles are injected over a wide longitudinal range close to the Sun. However, the low values of the first-order anisotropy observed by near-Earth spacecraft suggest that diffusive propagation processes are likely involved.

Stereoscopic Observations of an Erupting Mini-filament-driven Two-sided-loop Jet and the Applications for Diagnosing a Filament Magnetic Field

Abstract Ubiquitous solar jets or jet-like activities are generally regarded as an important source of energy and mass input to the upper solar atmosphere and the solar wind. However, their triggering and driving mechanisms are not completely understood. By taking advantage of stereoscopic observations with high temporal and spatial resolutions taken by the Solar Dynamic Observatory (SDO) and the Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO), we report an intriguing two-sided-loop jet that occurred on 2013 June 02, and was dynamically associated with the eruption of a mini-filament below an overlying large filament. Additionally, two distinct reconnection processes are identified during the formation stage. The SDO observations reveal that the two-sided-loop jet showed a concave shape with a projection speed of about 80–136 km s−1. From the other view angle, the STEREO observations clearly showed that the trajectories of the two arms of the two-sided-loop were along the cavity magnetic field lines hosting the large filament. Contrary to the well-accepted theoretical model, the present observation sheds new light on our understanding of the formation mechanism of two-sided-loop jets. Moreover, the eruption of the two-sided-loop jet not only supplied mass to the overlying large filament, but also provided a rare opportunity to diagnose the magnetic structure of the overlying large filament via the method of three-dimensional reconstruction.

Estimation of Arrival Time of Coronal Mass Ejections in the Vicinity of the Earth Using SOlar and Heliospheric Observatory and Solar TErrestrial RElations Observatory Observations

The arrival time of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) in the vicinity of the Earth is one of the most important parameters in determining space weather. We have used a new approach to predicting this parameter. First, in our study, we have introduced a new definition of the speed of ejection. It can be considered as the maximum speed that the CME achieves during the expansion into the interplanetary medium. Additionally, in our research we have used not only observations from the SOlar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) spacecraft but also from Solar TErrestrial RElations Observatory (STEREO) spacecrafts. We focus on halo and partial-halo CMEs during the ascending phase of Solar Cycle 24. During this period the STEREO spacecraft were in quadrature position in relation to the Earth. We demonstrated that these conditions of the STEREO observations can be crucial for an accurate determination of the transit times (TTs) of CMEs to the Earth. In our research we defined a new initial velocity of the CME, the maximum velocity determined from the velocity profiles obtained from a moving linear fit to five consecutive height–time points. This new approach can be important from the point of view of space weather as the new parameter is highly correlated with the final velocity of ICMEs. It allows one to predict the TTs with the same accuracy as previous models. However, what is more important is the fact that the new approach has radically reduced the maximum TT estimation errors to 29 hours. Previous studies determined the TT with a maximum error equal to 50 hours.

Weakened Magnetization and Onset of Large-scale Turbulence in the Young Solar Wind—Comparisons of Remote Sensing Observations with Simulation

Abstract Recent analysis of Solar-Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO) imaging observations have described the early stages of the development of turbulence in the young solar wind in solar minimum conditions. Here we extend this analysis to a global magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulation of the corona and solar wind based on inner boundary conditions, either dipole or magnetogram type, that emulate solar minimum. The simulations have been calibrated using Ulysses and 1 au observations, and allow, within a well-understood context, a precise determination of the location of the Alfvén critical surfaces and the first plasma beta equals unity surfaces. The compatibility of the the STEREO observations and the simulations is revealed by direct comparisons. Computation of the radial evolution of second-order magnetic field structure functions in the simulations indicates a shift toward more isotropic conditions at scales of a few Gm, as seen in the STEREO observations in the range 40–60 R ⊙. We affirm that the isotropization occurs in the vicinity of the first beta unity surface. The interpretation based on early stages of in situ solar wind turbulence evolution is further elaborated, emphasizing the relationship of the observed length scales to the much smaller scales that eventually become the familiar turbulence inertial range cascade. We argue that the observed dynamics is the very early manifestation of large-scale in situ nonlinear couplings that drive turbulence and heating in the solar wind.

Statistical study of co-rotating interaction region properties with STEREO and ACE observations

We analyzed the data on co-rotating interaction regions (CIRs) measured by the Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) and Solar TErrestrial RElations Observatory (STEREO) from 2007 to 2010. The CIRs were observed by STEREO B (STB), ACE and STEREO A (STA) one after another, and a total of 28 CIRs were identified in this work. Since the same characteristics of CIRs were detected by these three spacecraft at three different locations and times, these data can help us to study the evolutions of CIRs. For a single event, the properties of CIRs observed by the three spacecraft were quite different and could be explained by spatial or temporal variations. For all these 28 CIRs, STA and STB observed similar mean parameters, such as peak magnetic field strength (offset 11%), peak and change in solar wind speed (offset 3% and 10% respectively), peak proton temperature (offset 14%) and peak perpendicular pressure (offset 15%). Surprisingly, STA detected much higher (41%) peak density of protons than STB.

Two Distinct Types of CME-flare Relationships Based on SOHO and STEREO Observations

Abstract In this paper, we present two distinct types of coronal mass ejection (CME)-flare relationships according to their observing time differences using 107 events from 2010 to 2013. The observing time difference, ΔT, is defined as flare peak time minus CME first appearance time at Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO) COR1 field of view. There are 41 events for group A (ΔT < 0) and 66 events for group B (ΔT ≥ 0). We compare CME 3D parameters (speed and kinetic energy) based on multi-spacecraft data (SOlar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) and STEREO A and B) and their associated flare properties (peak flux, fluence, and duration). Our main results are as follows. First, there are better relationships between CME and flare parameters for group B than that of group A. In particular, CME 3D kinetic energy for group B is well correlated with flare fluence with the correlation coefficient of 0.67, which is much stronger than that (cc = 0.31) of group A. Second, the events belonging to group A have short flare durations of less than 1 hr (mean = 21 minutes), while the events for group B have longer durations up to 4 hr (mean = 81 minutes). Third, the mean value of height at peak speed for group B is 4.05 Rs, which is noticeably higher than that of group A (1.89 Rs). This is well correlated with the CME acceleration duration (cc = 0.75). A higher height at peak speed and a longer acceleration duration of CME for group B could be explained by the fact that magnetic reconnections for group B continuously occur for a longer time than those for group A.

Efficiency of particle acceleration at interplanetary shocks: Statistical study of STEREO observations

Context. Among others, shocks are known to be accelerators of energetic charged particles. However, many questions regarding the acceleration efficiency and the required conditions are not fully understood. In particular, the acceleration of electrons by shocks is often questioned. Aims. In this study we determine the efficiency of interplanetary shocks for $<$100 keV electrons, and for ions at $\sim$0.1 and $\sim$2 MeV energies, as measured by the Solar Electron and Proton Telescope (SEPT) instruments aboard the twin Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO) spacecraft. Methods. We employ an online STEREO in situ shock catalog that lists all shocks observed between 2007 and mid 2014 (observed by STEREO A) and until end of 2013 (observed by STEREO B). In total 475 shocks are listed. To determine the particle acceleration efficiency of these shocks, we analyze the associated intensity increases (shock spikes) during the shock crossings. For the near-relativistic electrons, we take into account the issue of possible ion contamination in the SEPT instrument. Results. The highest acceleration efficiency is found for low energy ions (0.1 MeV), which show a shock-associated increase at 27% of all shocks. The 2 MeV ions show an associated increase only during 5% of the shock crossings. In the case of the electrons, the shocks are nearly ineffective. Only five shock-associated electron increases were found, which correspond to only 1% of all shock crossings.

Approaching Solar Maximum 24 with STEREO—Multipoint Observations of Solar Energetic Particle Events

Since the beginning of the Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO) mission at the end of 2006, the two spacecraft have now separated by more than 130 ∘ degrees from the Earth. A 360-degree view of the Sun has been possible since February 2011, providing multipoint in situ and remote sensing observations of unprecedented quality. Combining STEREO observations with near-Earth measurements allows the study of solar energetic particle (SEP) events over a wide longitudinal range with minimal radial gradient effects. This contribution provides an overview of recent results obtained by the STEREO/IMPACT team in combination with observations by the ACE and SOHO spacecraft. We focus especially on multi-spacecraft investigations of SEP events. The large longitudinal spread of electron and 3He-rich events as well as unusual anisotropies will be presented and discussed.

Comparison of Far-Side STEREO Observations of Solar Activity and Active Region Predictions from GONG

On 6 February 2011, the two Solar TErrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO) spacecraft reached 180° separation and began imaging the entire far-side hemisphere of the Sun in extreme ultraviolet light (EUV). Here, we compare STEREO’s observations of far-side solar activity, as evidenced by bright regions in the EUV images, to predictions of far-side active regions from helioseismology using National Solar Observatory Global Oscilla-tion Network Group (GONG) observations. GONG produces seismic Carrington maps of strong magnetic field regions, labeling far-side regions with a probability ≥ 70%. By visual comparison of these GONG maps with STEREO EUV Carrington maps, we determine whether or not solar activity is observed at the locations of the predicted active regions. For data from February – June 2011, we find that for 139 of 157 comparisons activity is observed in EUV at the predicted site, yielding an 89% success rate. For 18 comparisons, no activity was seen at the predicted region (11% false predictions). We also investigated GONG’s success at predicting large active regions before they appear at the east limb as viewed from Earth. Of 15 such east-limb active regions, eight were predicted by GONG at least once in the seven days preceding their Earth-side appearance. STEREO B observations of activity in the days preceding the appearance of the other seven large East-limb active regions indicated that, while three were possibly too small for GONG to make a prediction, four seemed as large and active as other active regions that had been predicted successfully by GONG.

Erratum to: Relation Between Type II Bursts and CMEs Inferred from STEREO Observations

The inner coronagraph (COR1) of the Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO) mission has made it possible to observe CMEs in the spatial domain overlapping with that of the metric type II radio bursts. The type II bursts were associated with generally weak flares (mostly B and C class soft X-ray flares), but the CMEs were quite energetic. Using CME data for a set of type II bursts during the declining phase of solar cycle 23, we determine the CME height when the type II bursts start, thus giving an estimate of the heliocentric distance at which CME-driven shocks form. This distance has been determined to be ∼1.5R s (solar radii), which coincides with the distance at which the Alfven speed profile has a minimum value. We also use type II radio observations from STEREO/WAVES and Wind/WAVES observations to show that CMEs with moderate speed drive either weak shocks or no shock at all when they attain a height where the Alfven speed peaks (∼3R s – 4R s). Thus the shocks seem to be most efficient in accelerating electrons in the heliocentric distance range of 1.5R s to 4R s. By combining the radial variation of the CME speed in the inner corona (CME speed increase) and interplanetary medium (speed decrease) we were able to correctly account for the deviations from the universal drift-rate spectrum of type II bursts, thus confirming the close physical connection between type II bursts and CMEs. The average height (∼1.5R s) of STEREO CMEs at the time of type II bursts is smaller than that (2.2R s) obtained for SOHO (Solar and Heliospheric Observatory) CMEs. We suggest that this may indicate, at least partly, the density reduction in the corona between the maximum and declining phases, so a given plasma level occurs closer to the Sun in the latter phase. In two cases, there was a diffuse shock-like feature ahead of the main body of the CME, indicating a standoff distance of 1R s – 2R s by the time the CME left the LASCO field of view.

THE WAVE PROPERTIES OF CORONAL BRIGHT FRONTS OBSERVED USING SDO /AIA

Coronal bright fronts (CBFs) are large scale wavefronts that propagate though the solar corona at hundreds of kilometers per second. While their kinematics have been studied in detail, many questions remain regarding the temporal evolution of their amplitude and pulse width. Here, contemporaneous high cadence, multi-thermal observations of the solar corona from the Solar Dynamic Observatory (SDO) and Solar TErrestrial RElations Observatory (STEREO) spacecraft are used to determine the kinematics and expansion rate of a CBF wavefront observed on 2010 August 14. The CBF was found to have a lower initial velocity with weaker deceleration in STEREO observations compared to SDO (~340 km/s and -72 m/s/s as opposed to ~410 km/s and -279 m/s/s). The CBF kinematics from SDO were found to be highly passband-dependent, with an initial velocity ranging from 379+/-12 km/s to 460+/-28 km/s and acceleration ranging from -128+/-28 m/s/s to -431+/-86 m/s/s in the 335A and 304A passbands respectively. These kinematics were used to estimate a quiet coronal magnetic field strength range of ~1-2 G. Significant pulse broadening was also observed, with expansion rates of ~130 km/s (STEREO) and ~220 km/s (SDO). By treating the CBF as a linear superposition of sinusoidal waves within a Gaussian envelope, the resulting dispersion rate of the pulse was found to be ~8-13 Mm^2 s^-1. These results are indicative of a fast-mode magnetoacoustic wave pulse propagating through an inhomogeneous medium.

INTERPRETING THE PROPERTIES OF SOLAR ENERGETIC PARTICLE EVENTS BY USING COMBINED IMAGING AND MODELING OF INTERPLANETARY SHOCKS

Images of the solar corona obtained by the Solar-Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO) provide high-cadence, high-resolution observations of a compression wave forming ahead of a fast (940 km s{sup -1}) coronal mass ejection (CME) that erupted at {approx}9:00 UT on 2010 April 03. The passage of this wave at 1 AU is detected in situ by the Advanced Composition Explorer and Wind spacecraft at 08:00 UT on April 05 as a shock followed by a turbulent and heated sheath. These unprecedented and complementary observations of a shock-sheath region from the Sun to 1 AU are used to investigate the onset of a Solar Energetic Particle (SEP) event measured at the first Lagrange point (L1) and at STEREO-Behind (STB). The spatial extent, radial coordinates, and speed of the ejection are measured from STEREO observations and used as inputs to a numerical simulation of the CME propagation in the background solar wind. The simulated magnetic and plasma properties of the shock and sheath region at L1 agree very well with the in situ measurements. These simulation results reveal that L1 and STB are magnetically connected to the western and eastern edges of the driven shock, respectively. They also show that the 12 hrmore » delay between the eruption time of the ejection and the SEP onset at L1 corresponds to the time required for the bow shock to reach the magnetic field lines connected with L1. The simulated shock compression ratio increases along these magnetic field lines until the maximum flux of high-energy particles is observed.« less

SMEI direct, 3-D-reconstruction sky maps, and volumetric analyses, and their comparison with SOHO and STEREO observations

Abstract. In this paper we present the results of the analysis of the late January 2007 Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) events recorded by the Solar Mass Ejection Imager (SMEI), the Solar TErrestrial RElations Observatory (STEREO), and the SOlar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) spacecraft. This period occurs when the two STEREO spacecraft views are from close to Earth, and thus the views from both SMEI and the STEREO outer Heliospheric Imagers (HI-2s) coincide. Three-dimensional (3-D) analyses derived from SMEI data show many CMEs that have also been studied by others using short-term image subtractions (image-differencing techniques). During this interval we map several CME structures that are observed in both SMEI and the STEREO-A HI instruments. SMEI brightness analyses provided by short-term image subtractions ("difference images") and, alternatively, subtractions of a mean-brightness fit over a long-time duration, both show the extents of the CMEs travelling outward above the East limb that erupted from the Sun on 24 and 25 January 2007. The SMEI 3-D-reconstructions not only enhance distinct features within the CME events, but also reconcile difference-imaging results with those where a long-term base has been removed. In the January 2007 example the structure as mapped by CME difference images traces the sharp intensity gradients at the front of the CMEs; generally brighter ejected material follows behind the location of the CME front, but shows poorly in these because of its larger angular extent. Using the long-duration background removal enables SMEI's 3-D analysis to determine a mass for this CME sequence North of the ecliptic.

STEREO QUADRATURE OBSERVATIONS OF THE THREE-DIMENSIONAL STRUCTURE AND DRIVER OF A GLOBAL CORONAL WAVE

We present the first observations of a global coronal wave ("EIT wave") from the two Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO) satellites in quadra- ture. The wave's initiation site was at the disk center in STEREO-B and precisely on the limb in STEREO-A. These unprecedented observations from the STEREO Extreme Ultraviolet Imaging (EUVI) instruments enable us to gain insight into the wave's kinematics, initiation and 3D structure. The wave propagates globally over the whole solar hemisphere visible to STEREO-B with a constant velocity of 263+/-16 km/s. From the two STEREO observations we derive a height of the wave in the range of 80-100 Mm. Comparison of the wave kinematics with the early phase of the erupting CME structure indicates that the wave is initiated by the CME lateral expansion, and then propagates freely with a velocity close to the fast magnetosonic speed in the quiet solar corona.
