The Influence of Information Media on People's Gender Identity

Media and gender identity construction are interdependent. Media reinforce people's gender identity by perpetuating stereotypes, while also reflecting the public's demand for gender identity. This paper explores the impact of information media on people's gender cognition and the changes in gender perception under media influence. It also examines the differences between media in the past and contemporary periods, and their respective effects. For instance, before the popularization of paper information, oral language was the main medium for people. At that time, information was subject to the media, with slow transmission speed and a small influence range. In this condition, due to the superiority of the male physiological structure, there is a male-biased patriarchal gender relationship, which was first established in social production relations. The low social productivity makes the social status of men with innate physiological advantages above that of women. This fact proves that the influence of information media on people's gender cognition is huge, and society reinforces people's gender identity by emphasizing men's physical advantages. The ultimate goal of this study is to showcase the huge stereotypes created by the media in the past and the current 'improvement' situation.

Debate: Seeds as Deep Time Technologies.

This essay theorizes crop seeds as deep time technologies, surveying a range of materialist approaches to the study of agriculture, from historical materialism to agroecology and actor-network theory. Recent studies of plant domestication suggest that the long history of human-plant relations and agrarian knowledge defy the reduction of seeds to products of nature or objects of property. Approaching seeds as technologies allows us to understand the actors and processes of improvement that demarcate biological material according to commercial and scientific logics. Framing seeds as a collaborative technological project with a 19,000-year history unseats industrial time as the dominant frame in the history of technology. It recasts political economy not simply as a construction of human social relations of production but also as it imagines the material used to produce life itself.

El biologicismo estadounidense a través de Crash

This work examines biologicism (racism) in the United States based on the film Crash. The instrumental-material nature of the phenomenon pointed out by various authors is also recognized in the film. Biologicism simultaneously moves through the planes of the obvious and the hidden. In the first, it acquires the profile of a structuring and decomposing factor of relationships, although formally it is abstract. In the second, it acts as an element that blocks the recognition of social classes, their relationships, training processes and labor hierarchies. Thus, biologicalism is a vehicle through which the interests of the hegemonic classes are promoted, and which results in the recreation and perpetuation of capitalist social relations of production.

Construction of a characteristic price model for urban real estate based on characteristic price models

Abstract The study of real estate, especially the study of real estate prices, has always been the focus of scholars. Therefore, this paper constructs a real estate characteristic price model based on the rural land system. Firstly, the impact of the rural land system on rural social production relations is studied, and the field of application of the characteristic price model is proposed. Then, it constructs the urban real estate characteristic price model through the characteristic price method under the real estate batch estimation method and the spatial characteristic method. Finally, the correlation variables are selected to test the variance chi-square and autocorrelation of the real estate characteristic price model. The study shows that the majority of the observations of the characteristic price model are randomly distributed in the interval of [-2,2], presenting a more concentrated effect. The discriminant coefficient R 2 and the adjusted discriminant coefficient R 2 of the model are 0.5754 and 0.5175, respectively, and the model fits well.

The Role of Knowledge in Economic Life — From Bacon to Marshall

ABSTRACT The paper seeks to uncover a long-submerged tradition that saw knowledge accumulation as the main driver of development. This vision was ubiquitous until the late 18th century when, with the advent of the machine age, the focus shifted from knowledge accumulation to capital accumulation. Emphasis on knowledge did not disappear completely. Some argued that the knowledge embedded in human agents and not capital was the source of productivity gains while others emphasised the role of technological and scientific knowledge alongside capital accumulation. By the early decades of the 20th century, the economic role of science had become more salient and by the end of that century, the idea that knowledge accumulation has a central role in progress was again taken for granted. The paper suggests that by focusing the kinds of knowledge we have; and how that knowledge is stored, transmitted, made use of, and extended; we can learn much about how specific social relations of production facilitate or retard development, about who gets the rewards, and how relations of production may need to change to allow knowledge itself to develop.

“Carnal conviviality” and the end of race?

ABSTRACT This paper seeks to address some confusions and contestations surrounding Paul Gilroy’s conceptualisation of conviviality. In particular, it seeks to argue that conviviality cannot be reduced to mere tentative co-existence, nor does it designate the absence of racism. Rather, it aims to demonstrate the messy complexity of everyday life, as people attempt to build lives alongside one another as they find themselves throwntogether on the margins of society. It does this through the qualitative exploration of fighters at a Polish-owned Muay Thai/Kickboxing gym in East London, where fighters enact what I refer to as “carnal conviviality”, a form of intimate, bodily togetherness constituted through training to fight that bonds fighters across racial, ethnic, religious and gendered lines. Although inherently local and messy, I argue that the production of social relations that see the human in the other are essential in times of mounting crises.

New social relations of digital technology and the future of work: Beyond technological determinism

AbstractThis introduction sets out the context for the Special Issue and offers an in‐depth reflection on key themes addressed by our contributors. The Special Issue aims to place the social relations of production at the centre of debates about technology and the future of work, and create space for greater critical reflection on what it means to go ‘beyond technological determinism’. We identify ways in which aspects of technological determinism continue to influence debates on technology, the labour process and industrial relations, despite efforts to reject it. We argue that this influence is manifested in some persistent problems within the literature including overly rigid periodisations (such as ‘platform capitalism’), a narrow conceptual repertoire (which reifies notions like ‘algorithmic control’) and a constricted empirical focus. We elucidate the value of a social shaping of technology (SST) approach to overcome these challenges and provide a brief overview of the articles contained within the issue.

Capitalism and the Creation of the U.S. Constitution

AbstractThis article engages with scholars working on the history of capitalism and with scholars of American political development to form a historical materialist perspective on the creation of the American federal government. First, it returns to the debate about the state in capitalist society to develop an approach for theorizing the relations between class, capitalism, and states. Next, it addresses the position of American capitalism in the 1780s, arguing that it was still in a long transition phase. After this, it reinterprets the Constitutional Convention of 1787 in the context of the long and uneven history of American capitalist development. I argue that the U.S. Constitution created the foundations of a state that would serve capitalist interests, including capitalist slave owners, but, at the same time, provided some space for social relations of production not yet fully subordinated to the power of capitalism to coexist.

He accomplishes this by weaving the voices and biographies of artists he interviewed or observed with his own insider perspective as a working musician. Arditi methodically historicizes the record deal as an ideological construct before emphasizing that music production, marketing and distribution’s digital turn only served to deepen the precarity of “being signed” within the recording industry. According to him, “Record contracts are ideology because they represent success at the same time that they limit the vast majority of signees’ capacity to earn a living. Record contracts are ideology in action; they do not convince people of an ordered world, but rather they create the order—they make the social relations of production... Simon Clarke’s Marxism and Latin America

Simon Clarke left an invaluable critical mark on Marxism. Despite his magnanimous work, he is relatively unknown in Latin America because very few texts have been translated into Spanish. We focus on Clarke’s vision and theory of the state, which is of fundamental importance to research in Latin America. First, we focus on his comprehension of the class struggle category to understand the capitalist state’s emergence. Second, we show the importance of his analysis of the subordination of the state and civil society to the rule of money and law. Third, we emphasise his particular way of understanding the social relations of production, which results in his incisive critique of structuralism and the regulation school. Finally, we point out that his understanding of the social relations of production led to a specific way of understanding Marxism that is ‘Simon Clarke’s Marxism’.

Social Relation of Production and Conflict of Economic Interests in Smallholder Oil Palm Plantations: A Case Study of Sintang District, West Kalimantan

An agricultural partnership is one of the ways adopted by oil palm plantation smallholders to survive and be sustainable in the face of global competition. The agricultural partnership that is based on a contract agreement is also aimed at maintaining the welfare of the involved smallholders. Partnership in agricultural production is part of the management system or mode of economic production agreed upon by both large-scale companies and smallholders. An unbalanced arrangement sometimes occurs due to the power dominance of large-scale company interests that leads to unfair relationships in the partnership between smallholders and large-scale corporations. This study used a qualitative research method with a case study as the main approach. By taking the case of the agricultural partnership of oil palm plantation smallholders in Perembang Village and Begori Village, Regency of Sintang of West Kalimantan, this study found four typologies of social agricultural production relations, namely asymmetric partnership, exploitative partnership, distrust partnership, and forced partnership.

‘If “Marxists” would only read Marx’: The significance of Simon Clarke’s Marxism

Simon Clarke was an original and consistent Marxist thinker. From an early stage in his career, he independently developed a cogent, non-dogmatic reading of Marx’s work that ran against the grain of the dominant variants of Marx of his day. In this piece, we delineate the main features of Clarke’s Marxism through a reading of an early essay, first drafted in 1970. We highlight his critique of ideology, his focus on the forms through which the social relations of production appear and his insistence on the unity of theory and history – the conviction that the class struggle is expressed in the concrete movement of history. These features would form the bedrock of his truly significant contribution over five decades.

The alternative to capitalism - democratic protagonism in the 21st century

The paper explores the possibility of creating a positive vision of post-capitalist society and economy, a blue-print for future society with reminiscence to the existing valuable drafts such as Marx and Engels?s Communist Manifesto. Also, it focuses on shortcomings of that blue-print that became evident through the experiences of 20th-century real socialisms. Following Canadian Marxist Michael Lebowitz, the paper elaborates on how the vision of socialism for the 21st century should place central emphasis on the importance of changing the social relations of production. The central problem is located in the ?vanguard relations of production?, the central power and hierarchical authority in the hand of the party vanguard. The paper stresses the importance of the communist party as central to the articulation of the interests of the proletarian class as a whole, a class whose central interest is the overthrow of capitalism. However, the project of overthrowing capitalism must include the recognition of the practical comprehension of the importance of the democratic protagonism. Workers cannot be subordinated as passive observers of the system change. A change in social circumstances should simultaneously mean a change in the actors themselves - the socialist protagonists.

Development Path of Labor Education in the Era of Artificial Intelligence in China

This article elucidates the logical relationship between artificial intelligence and the development of labor education in China. Taking the perspective of Marxist labor theory, it points out that the rise of artificial intelligence is an inevitable outcome of the development of social production relations and productivity. It raises new questions and challenges regarding the essence and role of labor. The article emphasizes the new requirements of artificial intelligence for the quality of workers, highlighting new opportunities and challenges for labor education in adapting to future labor market demands, including technological barriers, digital divides, and the innovation of educational systems and institutions.In conclusion, the article proposes a development path for labor education utilizing artificial intelligence technology. It underscores the upgrading of labor education theories, focuses on the application of artificial intelligence technology in labor education practices, and suggests the establishment of a diversified labor education evaluation system. This aims to cultivate students’ innovative practical abilities, emphasizing interdisciplinary integration and collaborative mechanisms to collectively promote the development of labor education.

Legal theory in search of social transformation

AbstractInspired by the contributions of Poul Kjaer and Kerry Rittich to this Special Issue, this article extends the reflection on the role and potential of law for social transformation. More specifically, I attempt to build on a revised framing of the constitutive role of law to draw the contours of a transformative instrumentalism, where law functions as an instrument for the articulation of political and social objectives. My account shifts the attention from transformative law’s form to its content, based on the premise that engagement with ‘political’ economy necessarily entails an engagement with the substantive standards that shape social relations of production and define the nature and extent of exploitation. Yet, I argue that the endorsement of law’s constitutive function and the turn to law’s content need not lead to the kind of instrumentalism that exhausts itself in particular policy reforms or prescriptions to assume control over processes of legal coding. Relying on a tentatively redrawn conception of the constitutive role of law that draws from both legal institutionalism and Marxist perspectives, I suggest that instrumentalism may instead be transformative by prioritising material ends, leaving open the question of the concrete legal and institutional forms that will materialise them. The directions of such transformative instrumentalism involve an element of ‘mobilisational democracy’ against the insulation of the economy from democratic control; reforms generative of collective subjects and centres of democratic power (‘non-reformist reforms’); and a focus on the planning and coordinating function of law among diverse – but united in their objective – legal rationales and institutional forms.

Re-centering labour in local food: local washing and the growing reliance on permanently temporary migrant farmworkers in Nova Scotia

This article explores the labour behind local food in the Canadian Atlantic province of Nova Scotia. Based on surveys and interviews with farmers, migrant farmworkers, and farmers’ market consumers in the province, we suggest that the celebration of local food by government and industry is a form of “local washing.” Local washing hides key aspects of the social relations of production: in this case, it hides insufficient financial and policy supports for Nova Scotian farms and the increased reliance on migrant farmworkers via the Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program and the Temporary Foreign Worker Program. Our research found that a growing reliance on migrant farmworkers was not just the case for larger, industrial farms, but also for smaller farms participating in local and alternative food initiatives, like farmers’ markets and fresh produce subscription boxes. Additionally, our surveys show that while farmers’ market shoppers expressed an interest in supporting local foods, they reported knowing little about farm workers or working conditions. Our paper contributes to the literature on local and alternative food initiatives by connecting the relations of production to consumption. Rather than focusing solely on the nature of the relationships between farmers and consumers and the values embodied in direct agricultural markets, this research explores the central role of permanently temporary migrant workers in local agriculture.

Capitalism and the politics of disease: then and now

ABSTRACT This article crystallises the links between capitalism and the politics of diseases. Capitalism is an economic and political system that depends not only on the production of capital, but also on the production of social relations. Just as it produces commodities, it reproduces and distributes new social relations by designating rivalries and alliances. Pandemic outbreaks are ideal conditions for capitalism to reinforce or reformulate these categories and put them into practice by naming and metaphorising diseases accordingly. The reconfiguration of capitalism brings about a shift in the typologies of enemies, the metaphors used to describe diseases, and the way diseases are confronted. This article aims to trace the shift in the politics of disease in two film productions dealing with pandemic outbreaks, Panic in the Streets (1950) and Covert One: The Hades Factor (2006), and in the mainstream media coverage of Covid-19 images in light of capitalism’s evolution from the Keynesian model to its contemporary understanding.

What Does CSR do for Freedom? (WITHDRAWN)

This article explores how freedom at work is inhibited by strategies of corporate social responsibility that, ostensibly, have freedom as a guiding principle. It analyses managers’ responsible for implementing corporate social responsibility (CSR) strategies and shows how they construct emancipated identities for themselves that, counter-intuitively, may inhibit the freedoms of others. I draw on an understanding of freedom as a product of social relations and a case study of middle managers with formal CSR responsibilities in a large US retail corporation, to explore how CSR managers talk about their roles. This shows that they constitute seemingly emancipated selves that are morally agentive, reflective and privileged and free of moral and social indignities associated with corporate capitalism. This may have deleterious effects on the freedoms of others. The paper contributes a new theory of the effects of CSR in restricting freedom. That is, managers with formal CSR responsibilities, in relying on CSR to constitute emancipated identities for themselves, construct lesser freedoms for others.

A critique of self-employment

Self-employed work participates, like subordinate work, in the logic of the capitalist social system of production. The legal system has built a false notion of autonomous work, that is, ‘free’ from heteronomous constraints and conditions, which does not correspond to the reality of social relations of production. Through a rereading of Marx’s Trinitarian formula and of the Slave-Master relationship in Kojève’s reading, the author proposes a critical reading of autonomous work, and, in a Weberian perspective, hopes for a progressive liberation of autonomous work through the intellectual work of science and politics.
