[Social Network Addiction and its Impact on School Performance of High School Students in Antananarivo]Introduction: The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of social network’s use and its effects on school result within high school student.Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted between 1 March 2017 to 30 June 2017 by 8 high school located in Antananarivo town. Internet Addiction Test was used to evaluate internet addiction.Results: In this study, we obtained 365 students between age of 13 and 21 years old with sex ratio 0,66. Prevalence of social network use was 40,55%. Annual school note ranges from 7,01 to 16,85 out of 20. The average note of networking users was significantly lower than non-users (p = 7,636E-25). IAT-score vary from 15 to 98 with an average of score of 53,95. IAT-score ≥ 75 is a factor of bad academic performance (p = 6,29E-12).Conclusion: Our study was showed a significant association between school performance decline and problematical internet use. Therefore, increase awareness about efficient control of this means of communication is essential to prevent another form of behavioral dependence.

Social Networking (SNS) Addiction among University Students: A Literature Review and Research Directions

The main objective of this literature review is to provide empirical and conceptual insight into SNS addiction by exploring potential SNS addiction, examining the personalities of SNS addicted users, and exploring SNS addiction’s negative consequences on well-being, social and academic life. The results revealed that there was no concordance among previous studies on which gender is the most likely to be addicted to SNS. Moreover, the addiction symptoms linked with SNS addiction were cognitive and behavioral salience, conflict with other activities, euphoria, loss of control, withdrawal, and relapse/reinstatement. Previous SNS’s studies determined a high prevalence rate of addiction to SNS among university students. The review revealed that 18.4% of the reviewed studies agreed that SNS addiction is significantly and positively related to depression and Neuroticism. Although 78% of the reviewed previous studies have highlighted several potential negative correlations of extensive SNS usage and addiction on university student well-being, social, and academic life, however, these studies gave more attention to the negative impact on students’ academic performance.

Effect of Social Networking Technology Addiction on Academic Performance of University Students in Nigeria

The benefits of social media networking platforms on students’ academic performance in contemporary times cannot be, overemphasized. These social networking platforms crafts out opportunities for information sharing andalso danger for students in diverse fields. The danger of social networking addiction on students’ academic performance, health, and social well-being triggered this study.400 students enrolled in this cross-sectional study, through stratified random sampling technique. Using the online survey of Google Form for data collection. The Ordinary Least Square and Pearson’s correlation coefficient was used to quantify and examine the impact. Findingsrevealed that social networking impact significantly on students’ academic performance, and was more prevalent among undergraduate students (P = 0.000). Pearson’s correlation coefficient revealed a significant relationship between social networking addiction, academic performance, health and social well-being of students (p=0.001). The misapplication of social media can become addictive among users and students.Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is proposed to diminish the negative effect of social network addiction on students and other co-users.

Effects of perceived ease of use on SNSs-addiction through psychological dependence, habit: the moderating role of perceived usefulness

Social networking sites (SNSs) provide a public platform for communication, interaction, and socialisation. The intention behind conducting this research was to evaluate whether perceived ease of use and related factors influence SNSs addiction and to discover their connection with this excessive use. Theoretically, we developed a model which integrates perceived ease of use with habit and psychological dependence to predict social networking addiction and tested the model among university students in Pakistan. Further, we examined the moderating effect of the perceived usefulness of these connections. The link between perceived ease of use and social networking addiction and psychological dependence is moderated by perceived usefulness. However, perceived usefulness shows an insignificant moderating relationship with habit. This study data was collected online using a Google documents application on a sample of university students in Pakistan. In total, 336 samples were collected and analysed with SPSS version 21. The results show that Pakistani students tend to have higher SNSs addiction because of its perceived ease of use.

Relación entre adicción a las redes sociales e impulsividad en escolares de instituciones educativas públicas de Lima Este

Objetivo: Determinar la relación entre la adicción a redes sociales e impulsividad en los estudiantesde 4° y 5° grado de secundaria de dos instituciones educativas estatales de Lima Este. Metodología:diseño no experimental, enfoque cuantitativo, de corte transversal y de tipo correlacional. La mediciónde la variable de impulsividad fue la Escala de Impulsividad de Barratt en adolescentes tempranos(BIS-11-A) la cual contiene dos dimensiones: impulsividad general e impulsividad no planificada. Encuanto a la variable de adicción a las redes sociales se utilizó la Escala de Riesgo de Adicción a lasRedes Sociales (CrARS) la cual contiene siete dimensiones, elaborado por Vilca y Vallejos (2015).Resultados: La muestra estuvo conformada por 253 estudiantes, de ambos sexos, cuyas edadeseran de 15-17 años. Se encontró relación significativa entre la impulsividad y la adicción a las redessociales (rho = .445, p<.01). Conclusión: Que los estudiantes que presentan niveles elevados deimpulsividad están relacionados con mayor riesgo de adicción a las redes sociales.

Problematic Internet Use and Smoking among Chinese Junior Secondary Students: The Mediating Role of Depressive Symptomatology and Family Support.

Background: Internet use is significant public health issue and can be a risk factor for other addictive behaviors, such as smoking. The present study examined the association between problematic Internet use (PIU) (i.e., Internet addiction (IA) and social networking addiction (SNA)) and smoking, and the mediating role of depressive symptomatology and family support played in such associations. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 5182 junior secondary students (grade 7 and 8) recruited from nine schools using stratified sampling. Results: A total of 3.6% of students had smoked in the past month, and 6.4% of students were identified as IA cases. Adjusted for significant background variables, PIU (ORa = 2.07, 95% CI = 1.48, 2.90 for IA, ORa = 1.26, 95% CI = 1.09, 1.47 for SNA), and probable depression (ORa = 1.33, 95% CI = 1.05, 1.69) were significant risk factors, while family support (ORa = 0.85, 95% CI = 0.77, 0.94) was a significant protective factor of smoking. The mediation effects of lower family support and probable depression on the association between score on IA scale and smoking, and the mediation effect of lower family support on the association between score on SNA scale and smoking were significant, while the mediation effect of probable depression on the association between score on SNA scale and smoking was marginally significant. Conclusions: PIU contributed to an increased risk of smoking through depressive symptomatology and decreasing family support among junior school students. Interventions to reduce smoking are warranted; they should seek to reduce problematic Internet use and depressive symptomatology, and promote family support.

Examining associations between social media use, depression, global health, and sleep disturbance among emerging adults

Abstract In recent years, social media use and its effects on mental health have been investigated many times. Mostly, studies focused less on the global health when addressing mental health. In this cluster analysis study, on a sample of 261 Turkish college students who were emerging adults, the associations between social media use and depression, sleep disturbance, and global health were tested. By using k-means cluster analysis, participants were divided into three groups: ordinary and none, mild, and severe social media users. The results indicated that male college students had higher social networking addiction than females. There was a significant and positive relationship between time spent on social media and depression and sleep disturbance. The results showed that mild level social media users differ statistically in global health and sleep disturbance from both ordinary/none and severe users. The results were similar with the previous published studies in different cultures and countries in the fields of mental health.

Technological Addiction in Adolescents: the Interplay Between Parenting and Psychological Basic Needs

Although technological addictions, similar to other behavioural addictions, share psychosocial risk factors with substance-related addictions, the studies on the interplay between contextual and personal variables in the prediction of technological addictions are still limited. For this reason, in accordance with Self-determination Theory (SDT), the aim of this study was to examine the integrated role of parental psychological control and parental autonomy with need satisfaction and need frustration in the understanding of technological addictions (Internet addiction, gaming addiction, smartphone addiction, and social network addiction) in adolescents. Using a sample of 482 adolescents (200 males) with an age range between 14 and 17, path analyses showed that both parental psychological control and need frustration predicted all the technological addictions examined. Furthermore, indirect effects from psychological control to all technological addictions through need frustration were also found. The findings are discussed in line with the SDT.

Analysis of the impact of online social networks addiction on the propagation of rumors

The growing popularity of online social networks (OSNs) has emerged phenomenon of addiction to OSNs, known as OSN-addiction, which has widely attracted researchers to study its impact on individuals. The OSN-addiction can lead to the dissemination of information without being convinced of its reliability. Moreover, the last couple of years have witnessed the appearance of OSNs that allow users to obtain profits of their content, such as YouTube. They create the ambition to have an extra income where individuals will seek for content that offers more views. As a result, these OSNs increase the degree of OSN-addiction in which it can significantly affect the propagation of rumors since they spread faster and broader than usual information. Therefore, this paper studies the effect of OSN-addiction on the propagation of rumors with the epidemic model. Thus, we propose a novel model that extends of the classical SIR model by integrating the role of addicted individuals into the spreading process based on psychological studies. A theoretical analysis is presented for homogeneous and heterogeneous networks, demonstrating a significant influence of OSN-addiction on the propagation of rumors. Finally, experiments were conducted on homogeneous networks, heterogeneous networks and real large-scale network (YouTube). The results confirm the theoretical analysis and illustrate the significant influence of the addicted individuals to amplify the impact of the propagation of a rumor whereas in particular cases it also accelerates the propagation.

Gender differences in the addiction to social networks in the Southern Spanish university students

Social networks sites have become the most popular instrument used to communicate and exchange information resulting in the addiction to this media. Previous studies suggested that personal characters play an essential role in addictive behavior and gender difference may be involved. Nevertheless, there are contradictions about the influence of gender. Some studies indicated higher addiction in men. Meanwhile, other researchers pointed out higher addiction among Spanish teenage female. Little studies in the Spanish context have analyzed the different socio-cultural and biological factors possibly related to this addiction and gender differences. With all being said, this study focused on determining the current incidence of social networks addiction in young college students, relating this social networking addiction with loneliness, prenatal testosterone (2D:4D ratio), self-esteem and personal satisfaction. A cross-sectional study focused on female and male college students aged 17–25 years (N = 278) was carried out. It was used several surveys, including the Social Network Addiction Questionnaire (SNA) and the 2D:4D ratio. The results showed difference among male and female about addiction (chi-square = 12.77, p-value = 0.002). Moreover, this addiction was linked with several factors, such as importance given to social networks by females (p-value < 0.001) and males (p-value < 0.001). Also, the findings showed that addiction to social networks might be influenced by gender, showing more importance sociopsychological factors in females and a combination of biological and social factors in the men. Moreover, Instagram has increased as the predominant social network for communication for college students (97.2% men and 93.7% women).

Social Network Addiction Scale: The Validity and Reliability Study of Adolescent and Adult Form

In this study, it was aimed to develop a valid and reliable social network addiction scale for adolescents and young adults. In the Exploratory Factor Analysis of the scale, the application was conducted to 425 high school students between 14-17 years of age and 310 young adults between 18-43 years of age. Confirmatory Factor Analysis was performed on a different group and for this purpose, 322 high school students and 197 young adults were included in the analysis. As a result of the analyses performed, the scale exhibited a-10-item and three-factor structure in both groups. The total variance explained was 71.51% for adolescents and 70.96% for young adults. The total Cronbach Alpha reliability coefficient of the scale was .87 for adolescents and .84 for young adults. With the 1st and 2nd level Confirmatory Factor Analysis performed on a similar study group, a good model was revealed for both adolescents and young adults. The Social Network Addiction Scale developed within the scope of this study is thought to have the adequate validity and reliability structure that can be used to measure social network addiction levels of adolescents and young adults.

Social network addiction and advertising on social networks: A case study of rural students in South Africa

Background: There is growing evidence that social media addiction is an enduring problem among students. This information can be used by marketers to create specific advertisement campaigns for students to promote organisational branding.Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the mediating role of psychological dependence between social networking sites (SNSs) addiction and attitude towards social networking advertising among a sample of rural students in South Africa.Method: This research adopted a positivist paradigm with a quantitative approach and a descriptive research design. Data were collected using questionnaires, which were distributed to 289 respondents residing within a rural community in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa.Results: This study found a relationship between: (1) perceived ease of use and habit, (2) perceived ease of use and psychological dependence, and (3) psychological dependence and attitude towards SNSs advertisement.Conclusion: Social media advertising should offer precise location-based targeting and data-driven users’ profiling, segmenting the target market according to preferences, likes and hobbies, through data mining and analytical interpretation of results as these are attributes that are not offered by traditional media.

Adicción a redes sociales en estudiantes de la especialización en investigación científica

Recibido: 12 nov. 2018 Aceptado: 23 jun. 2019&#x0D; Propósito: Determinar la adicción a redes sociales en estudiantes de la especialización en investigación científica de la Escuela de Estudios de Postgrado de la Facultad de Ingeniería de la Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala con el establecimiento de: obsesión, falta de control personal y uso excesivo, durante julio agosto del 2018.&#x0D; Material y Método: Estudio cuantitativo y transversal realizado en la población total de estudiantes con 101 participantes, 58 mujeres y 43 hombres. Se evaluó la adicción a redes sociales con el cuestionario de Escurra y Salas adaptado al contexto guatemalteco.&#x0D; Resultados: Los estudiantes tenían una edad media de 26 años, el 57% de la población eran mujeres y 43% hombres. El 48% de los participantes prefirió WhatsApp como red social, 29% se inclinó por Facebook, 20% por Instagram y 3% por Twitter. La obsesión por las redes sociales se estableció en el 19% de los estudiantes, de esta proporción el 56% eran del sexo femenino; la falta de control personal se presentó en el 20%, donde 51% también fueron mujeres; el uso excesivo se reportó en el 7%, del cual 55% eran hombres.&#x0D; Conclusiones: Los participantes eran en su mayoría jóvenes y del sexo femenino. Las redes sociales predilectas fueron WhatsApp y Facebook. Un quinto de los sujetos presenta obsesión por las redes sociales, un quinto tiene falta de control personal y uno de cada diez estudiantes usa excesivamente estas plataformas virtuales; quienes presentan adicción son mayoritariamente mujeres.&#x0D;

THE BOUNDARIES OF THE INFORMATION PEDAGOGY IMPLEMENTATION IN THE CONTEXT OF THE USE OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES IN THE EDUCATIONAL PROCESS

The external (cyber-, internet-, social network addiction, cyber plagiarism, life virtualization, video game addiction, information manipulation, depersonalization and so on) and internal boundaries (psychological and physical loads) are identified, and the optimal parameters (the information culture, didactic soundness, controllability, material and technical security, ergonomics, etc.) for the implementation of the tasks and principles of information pedagogy in the context of the use of information and communication technologies in the educational process are defined.

Behavioral Addictions: Some Developmental Considerations

The American Psychiatric Association and World Health Organization have begun to recognize a number of behavioral disorders in their revised diagnostic criteria of mental health disorders. The current review focuses upon examining developmental trajectories associated with gambling, gaming, and Internet disorders. While epidemiological studies indicate a growing number of individuals are experiencing a variety of behavioral disorders, many of these disorders have their etiology and origins during childhood and adolescence. The research suggests the importance of considering developmental trajectories when examining gambling, gaming, and Internet disorders (e.g., social networking addiction, smartphone addiction). Higher prevalence rates for each of these disorders have been found among adolescents compared with adults. Individuals experiencing each of these disorders have been shown to have concomitant-associated mental health, academic, social, familial, and interpersonal problems. With time, most youths (age 12–18) seem to outgrow many of these disorders or modify their behaviors to an acceptable level as they assume adult responsibilities. A better understanding of developmental trajectories associated with behavioral disorders along with their respective risk and protective factors will ultimately enable researchers and clinicians to develop more effective prevention and treatment programs.

General health of students of medical sciences and its relation to sleep quality, cell phone overuse, social networks and internet addiction

BackgroundIn recent years, the phenomena of access to the cell phone and addiction to the Internet have been developed among students due to their many applications and attractiveness. Therefore, the present study was conducted with the aim of evaluating general health status and also determining the predictive role of variables such as cell phone usage, sleep quality, internet addiction and social networks addiction in students.MethodsThis cross-sectional study was conducted on 321 students of Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences in an analytical approach. Data collection tools were: Goldberg’s General Health Questionnaire, Pittburgh Sleep Quality Index, Young Internet Addiction Test, Social Network Addiction Questionnaire, and Cell Phone Overuse Scale. Data analysis was done using SPSS version 21 and general linear model.ResultsBased on the results, the mean (SD) score of the general health was 21.27 (9.49). Variables of gender, sleep quality, and levels of cell phone usage were independent predictors of student’s health. Male students (β (95% CI) = − 0.28 (− 0.49 to − 0.01) and students with favorable sleep quality (β (95% CI) = − 0.22 (− 0.44 to − 0.02) had lower total health score than the reference category (female students and students with unfavorable sleep quality, respectively). In addition, students with cell phone overuse (β (95% CI) = 0.39 (0.08 to 0.69) had a higher general health score than the reference category (students with cell phone little use).In general, this group of students had lower general health status (Low or high scores of general health indicate a higher and lower general health status for subjects, respectively).ConclusionVariables of gender, sleep quality and cell phone use were the most important variables associating the general health of medical students.

The relationship between social networking addiction and academic performance in Iranian students of medical sciences: a cross-sectional study

BackgroundSocial networks have had a major influence on students’ performance in recent years. These networks create many opportunities and threats for students in various fields. Addiction to social networking and its impact on students’ academic performance caused the researcher to design and conduct this study. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between social networking addiction and academic performance of students in Iran.MethodsIn this cross-sectional study, 360 students were enrolled by stratified random sampling. The study tools included personal information form and the Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale. Also, the students’ overall grade obtained in previous educational term was considered as the indicator of academic performance. Data were analyzed using SPSS-18.0 and descriptive and inferential statistics.FindingsThe mean social networking addiction was higher in male students (52.65 ± 11.50) than in female students (49.35 ± 13.96) and this difference was statistically significant (P < 0.01). There was a negative and significant relationship between students’ addiction to social networking and their academic performance (r = − 0.210, p < 0.01).ConclusionsThe social networking addiction of the students was at moderate level and the male students had a higher level of addiction compared to the female students. There was a negative and significant relationship between the overall use of social networks and academic performance of students. Therefore, it is imperative that the university authorities take interventional steps to help students who are dependent on these networks and, through workshops, inform them about the negative consequences of addiction to social networks.

Assessment of the Adverse Effects of Online Social Networking Sites among Late Adolescents

BackgroundnbspMore than 90 adolescents between 15-19 years have access to the internet in India. Most of the adolescents in India are over users of social networking sites SNSs. Major consequences are social networking addiction Facebook depression sleep deprivation insomnia and restlessness.ObjectivesnbspTo assess the adverse effects of online social networking sites usage and factors associated with it among late adolescents.MethodologynbspThis is a cross sectional study done among 239 late adolescents of selected JSS Institutions in Mysuru. Data was collected using a pre-tested semistructured questionnaire. Online social networking sites questionnaires was used to assess social networking sites usage and DASS scale was used to assess depression anxiety and stress. Data was analysed using IBM SPSS v25. plt0.05 was considered statistically significant.ResultsnbspAmong 239 participants 70.7 had adverse effects due to SNSs usage. Facebook usage was 70.2 WhatsApp 67.3 Instagram 39.7. 30.1 used SNSs for lt1hourday 26.7 for 1 to 2 hoursday 15.4 2-3 hoursday and 27.6 gt3hoursday. On DASS 57.3 had depression 77.4 had anxiety and 14.2 were having stress. Association between fatherrsquos occupation and adverse effects due to SNSs usage was statistically significant.ConclusionsnbspThe adverse effects due to social networking usage was high in our study participants along with higher rates of anxiety and depression.

La adicción a las redes sociales en una muestra de empleados de varias organizaciones del sureste de Puerto Rico

The main objective of the research was to auscultate if the employees of companies use social network, if they have an addiction to technology, and how they use the internet during their working hours using a quantitative methodology with a Cross-sectional and descriptive approach. In order to measure the addiction to social networks, the instrument used was the Social Network Addiction Questionnaire (ARS) designed by Miguel Escurra Mayaute and Edwin Salas Blas (2014). 100 questionnaires were administrated. Of the socio-demographic data collected, the following stood out: 54% correspond to the public organization, 63% of the participants were female, and 96% of the participants use their cell phone to connect to social networks, while 70% do so through the computer. In a similar way, participants indicated to connect to social networks at their homes and at work. Regarding which social network Facebook is the most used, obtained the most percentage with 40%. The results revealed that there are statically significant differences by gender (F=5.34, p=.023), by amount of time they are connected (F=4.80, p=.002) and addiction to social networks.
