The ups and downs of sensory eye balance: Monocular deprivation has a biphasic effect on interocular dominance

Classic studies of ocular dominance plasticity in early development showed that monocular deprivation suppresses the neural representation and visual function of the deprived eye. However, recent studies have shown that a short period of monocular deprivation (<3 h) in normal adult humans, shifts sensory eye dominance in favor of the deprived eye. How can these opposing effects be reconciled? Here we argue that there are two systems acting in opposition at different time scales. A fast acting, stabilizing, homeostatic system that rapidly decreases gain in the non-deprived eye or increases gain in the deprived eye, and a relatively sluggish system that shifts balance toward the non-deprived eye, in an effort to reduce input of little utility to active vision. If true, then continuous deprivation should produce a biphasic effect on interocular balance, first shifting balance away from the non-deprived eye, then towards it. Here we investigated the time course of the deprivation effect by monocularly depriving typical adults for 10 h and conducting tests of sensory eye balance at six intervening time points. Consistent with previous short-term deprivation work, we found shifts in sensory eye dominance away from the non-deprived eye up until approximately 5 h. We then observed a turning point, with balance shifting back towards the non-deprived eye, -, a biphasic effect. We argue that this turning point marks where the rapid homeostatic response saturates and is overtaken by the slower system responsible for suppressing monocular input of limited utility.

OPTIMAL TUNING OF A PID CONTROLLER FOR EMDAP-CVT USING PARTICLE SWARM OPTIMIZATION

This paper looked into optimal tuning of a Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controller used in Electro-mechanical Dual Acting Pulley Continuously Variable Transmission (EMDAP-CVT) system for controlling the output obtained, and hence, to minimize the integral of absolute errors (IAE). The main objective was to obtain a stable, robust, and controlled system by tuning the PID controller by using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm. The incurred value was compared with the traditional tuning techniques like Ziegler-Nichols and it had been proven better. Hence, the results established that tuning the PID controller using PSO technique offered less overshoot, a less sluggish system, and reduced IAE.

Unusually sluggish microemulsion system with water, toluene and a technical branched alkyl polyethoxylate

Microemulsion systems with water, toluene and nonionic surfactants are interesting for application due to the excellent solvent properties of aromatic hydrocarbons. In this study, the pseudo-binary phase diagram (?fish-diagram?) of such a ternary system was investigated using a branched technical alkyl polyethoxylate. Lutensol ON 50 (i-C10E5) was considered a suitable surfactant. The system with technical branched i-C10E5 exhibits very long and for compositions near optimum solubilization, i.e. the minimum content of surfactant needed for a bicontinuous microemulsion, extremely long times for equilibration. In addition to visual observation, qualitative measurements of turbidity were performed with a UV-Vis spectrometer for characterizing the behavior of this unusually sluggish system. Isothermal phase diagrams at 20, 25 and 30?C yielded inconsistent results after the change of temperature and the application of mechanical stress for different treatment of the samples. Ternary mixtures of water, toluene, and Lutensol ON 50 seem to form long-living metastable states. The sluggishness and the ambiguous phase behavior of the system are discussed. Inconsistent results are attributed to the slow kinetics of the formation and destruction of liquid crystals and the ability of the system to form miniemulsions within an unusual concentration range.

Carriage speed control of a cross-lapper system for nonwoven web quality

Traditionally, this is a stable, sluggish system with large attenuation of the input in the steady state. In this paper, the modeling, stability, order reduction, dynamic analysis and controller design of a cross-lapper system for good nonwoven web quality will be presented to deal with this issue. A realizable controller is designed which can not only make the closed-loop system efficient for good tracking property but also can achieve the meaningful design objectives. The performance can be effectively shown from the computer simulation.

Modeling the Internet congestion control using a Smith controller with input shaping

The Internet has shown a great capability of endless growing without incurring congestion collapse. The key of this success lies in its TCP/IP congestion control algorithm. In this paper, we use control theoretic analysis to model the Internet flow and congestion control as a time delay system. We show that the self-clocking principle, which is known to be a key component of any stable congestion Internet control algorithm, corresponds to implement a simple proportional controller (P) plus a Smith predictor (SP), which overcomes feedback delays that are due to propagation times. Different variants of TCP congestion control algorithms, such as classic TCP Reno or the recent Westwood TCP, can be modeled in a unified framework by proper input shaping of the P+SP controller structure. Finally, we show that controllers that do not implement the Smith predictor, such as proportional (P) controllers or proportional+derivative+integral (PID) controllers, provide an unacceptable sluggish system because they do not implement dead-time compensation.

Simple scaling relations in geodynamics: the role of pressure in mantle convection and plume formation

Scaling relations are important in extrapolating laboratory experiments to the Earth’s mantle. In planetary interiors, compression becomes an important parameter and it is useful to explore scalings that involve volume. I use simple volume scaling relations that allow one to extrapolate laboratory experiments and upper mantle behavior, in a thermodynamically self-consistent way, to predict lower mantle behavior. The relations are similar to the quasi-harmonic approximation. Slabs and plates have characteristic dimensions of hundreds of kilometers and time constants of 100 million years, but the volume scalings predict order of magnitude higher values in the deep mantle. The scaling relations imply that the deep mantle is a sluggish system with ancient features. They imply irreversible chemical stratification and do not favor the plume hypothesis.

At first glance, it may seem that PI control improves steady-state error at the expense of stability. Moreover, after the location of the controller's zero is properly selected, both the transient response and steady-state error can be improved. At the same time, good tracking and step disturbance rejection can be achieved by moving all of the poles of the closed-loop system into the left half of the plane during the operation.

Bacteriol. 84:819-821. 1962-The observation that Pseudomonas natriegens utilizes the Embden-Meyerhof pathway and the hexose monophosphate-pentose cycle only very slightly, even though the necessary enzymes are present, was explained by the existence of a sluggish system for the oxidation of reduced triphosphopyridine nucleotide (TPNH). Pyridine nucleotide transhydrogenase could not be detected in cell-free extracts. A very active system for the oxidation of reduced diphosphopyridine nucleotide (DPNH) was observed. Thus, since lactic acid is a major end product of glucose dissimilation and since the lactic dehydrogenase of P. natriegens does not utilize DPNH as cofactor, the Embden-Meyerhof pathway apparently operates aerobically by direct oxidation of DPNH, presumably by coupling with the terminal oxidase system rather than by coupling to synthetic reactions requiring DPNH as cofactor. A TPNH-specific glutathione reductase was detected which was inhibited by adenosine-2'-monophosphate.
