Comparisons and Perspectives on HRM in the Asia Pacific

The management of human resources in different countries has become an area of increasing interest for academics and business, one that has taken on Asian aspects. Contributing to this fascination are various views of economic development and the key ingredients of employees, ‘the human touch’ and people management. Various contributions to the field are outlined, including such perennially popular siren songs as convergence and ‘one best way’, concluding that ideas of universalism and nostrums of best practice remain far too simplistic in the dynamic and diverse world of HRM.

The siren songs of consumption: An analysis of foreign advertisements in two mainland Chinese newspapers, 1985-1993

This paper examines the content and form of foreign advertisements in two promi nent Chinese daily newspapers from 1985 to 1993.1 The study indicates that the quantity of foreign advertising in the Chinese newspapers remained constant during the period under study. With pleasure-seeking and consumption for modernity as their recurring themes, the foreign advertisements mainly focused on advertising consumer goods and employed more attention-getting tactics than Chinese domestic advertisements. This study argues that the rise of consumer culture in China, which involved foreign advertising, signaled the historical rever sal of the hyper-politicization of communist ideology during the pre-economic reform era, and that the presence of foreign advertising in China epitomized an increasing influx of Western cultural products in that country.

In Siren Songs: Gender, Audiences, and Narrators in Lillian Eileen Doherty shows us that the attitude of Odysseus, as well as of the Odyssey, is highly ambivalent toward women. Odysseus rewards supportive female characters by treating them as privileged members of the audience for his own tales. In artistic circles, particularly in architecture and literary criticism, the discussion of a shift from aesthetic modernism to postmodernism has been continuous and sustained,' while in the social sciences postmodernism has gone through two phases. The first was rather disparate, and, in fact, various labels were invented to describe it, such as "postindustrialism," the "information society," or the "technetronic society."2 In the 1970s the discussion of postmodernism all but disappeared from social science literature;3 however, in the past decade social scientists again discussed it, and by the mid-1980s postmodernism had left the ghetto of esoteric debates and had entered the mainstream of intellectual and public discourse.4 The term "postmodernism" now refers to a discussion involving not only social scientists but also three other strands of influence more closely connected with artistic modernism.

The focus of this paper is on the interplay between and among issues and crisis management. These linkages have not been previously explored in any depth. This analysis addresses: (1) the process by which issues become crises and suggests specific criteria to evaluate the potential for an issue to become a cri sis ; (2) offers reasons why organizations miss the warning signs of impending crises; and (3) offers examples of recent crises and draws lessons from those experiences.

The Name's the Thing: Promoting Ohio Towns During the Era of Good Feelings

~ERICA IS COVERED WITH NAMES THAT reflect broken dreams, dreams of riches to be won by platting towns where cattle grazed and forests stood. Possibly such a town would become a county seat, a state capital, the home of a university or, at least, an insane asylum. Nowhere and at no time did this craving become so apparent as in Ohio during the years 1815-1819. Though Kentucky, Alabama Territory, 1 Tennessee, Indiana and the territories of Illinois and Missouri also became hot spots of town platting, no other state or territory was in the same league with the Buckeye State. Within Ohio's borders well over 100 new towns were platted or advertised for sale between 1815 and 1819. Boosting towns was an economic sequel to the optimism that followed the Battle of New Orleans and the Treaty of Ghent. In early 1814 with the British poised on the border of New York State, with the Royal Navy ready to take control of the Chesapeake Bay region and with an attack upon New Orleans projected, the United States appeared headed towards certain defeat. Surprisingly, dawn followed darkness. Battles such as those at the River Thames and Horseshoe Bend made tens of thousands of fertile acres safe for white settlement. The War of 1812 had dammed up the stream of westward heading immigrants. With the end of the war, the Old Northwest became the object of the largest migration to that date. Ohio's share of this tidal wave is clearly shown by Buckeye State population statistics. Ohio's 1820 population was nearly two and a half times that of 1810. Because of the state's exposed condition during the War of 1812, it is probably safe to assume that the lion's share of Ohio's growth came during the last half of the decade. The state's location athwart major migration routes and its resultant population increase made it particularly susceptible to the siren songs of the land
