Inventarizácia invázneho druhu pajaseňa žliazkatého (Ailanthus altissima) v urbánnom prostredí – prípadová štúdia

Tree of heaven [Ailanthus altissima (Mill.) Swingle] (family Simaroubaceae) is known as an invasive woody species in urban, rural, and natural ecosystems in many parts of the world. In Slovakia, it is accepted as an invasive species included in the list of invasive alien species of the EU concern (Regulation No. 2019/1262). In this study, the spread of the invasive neophyte A. altissima populations was monitored in the immediate vicinity (1 km) of the Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra in southwestern Slovakia in 2022. We recorded habitat type, GPS coordinates in the centre of the local populations, area of population (m2), average tree height (m), and management measures. The species colonized an area of 1,997 m2. The plant spread mainly in the habitat of extensively cultivated fields such as front gardens of buildings (31%) and in abandoned and unused areas (the species occupied 28% of the total area). We recorded a lower occurrence in the botanical garden (18%), next to the anti-flood dam (16%), along roads (4%) and in the orchard (3%). Approximately 15% (28 shoots) of the total number of 183 shoots were female plants that formed a high number of seeds. There was a high correlation between the area occupied by A. altissima with its above-ground organs and the average plant height (m) (r = 0.88).

Chloroplast genomes of Simarouba Aubl., molecular evolution and comparative analyses within Sapindales

Simarouba, a neotropical genus in the family Simaroubaceae, currently lacks comprehensive genomic data in existing databases. This study aims to fill this gap by providing genomic resources for three Simarouba species, S. amara, S. versicolor, and S. glauca. It also aims to perform comparative molecular evolutionary analyses in relation to other species within the order Sapindales. The analysis of these three Simarouba species revealed the presence of the typical quadripartite structure expected in plastomes. However, some pseudogenization events were identified in the psbC, infA, rpl22, and ycf1 genes. In particular, the CDS of the psbC gene in S. amara was reduced from 1422 bp to 584 bp due to a premature stop codon. Nucleotide diversity data pointed to gene and intergenic regions as promising candidates for species and family discrimination within the group, specifically matK, ycf1, ndhF, rpl32, petA-psbJ, and trnS-trnG. Selection signal analyses showed strong evidence for positive selection on the rpl23 gene. Phylogenetic analyses indicated that S. versicolor and S. glauca have a closer phylogenetic relationship than S. amara. We provide chloroplast genomes of three Simaruba species and use them to elucidate plastome evolution, highlight the presence of pseudogenization, and identify potential DNA barcode regions.

Phenolic Composition and Bioactivities of Invasive Ailanthus altissima (Mill.) Swingle Leaf Extracts Obtained by Two-Step Sequential Extraction.

Ailanthus altissima, a highly invasive species, contains valuable compounds in different plant parts, indicating great practical potential. This paper proposes the use of non-polar (n-hexane) and polar (ethanol) solvents for the extraction of antioxidant compounds from A. altissima (family Simaroubaceae) leaves in a sequential two-step process. Fresh and dried leaves were examined for their microstructure by scanning electron microscopy, and for color changes in the CIELAB color space co-ordinates. An investigation of the harvesting season, processing (freezing and drying), and solvent indicates ethanol can be used for the highly efficient extraction of phenolics, flavonoids, tannins, and carotenoids. Statistically significant differences were found between the autumn and summer samples for phenolic content, and between dried and frozen samples for tannin content. The HPLC phenolic profile indicates more phenolics (nine polyphenols) in dried leaves harvested in both seasons compared to those in frozen ones (five to six polyphenols). Frozen leaves showed a higher antioxidant activity in a ferric-reducing antioxidant power assay than that of the dried samples, which exhibited a higher antioxidant activity using the 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl assay, but it was not statistically significant. The phenolic, flavonoid, and carotenoid contents significantly influenced the antioxidant activities. Among the ethanolic extracts, those from dried leaves showed better antibacterial activity, in particular, on Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecalis. The high bioactive content and activity of A. altissima leaves make them suitable natural raw materials for various applications.

Picrachinentins A-F, 14-Membered Cyclopeptide Alkaloid-Type Burpitides with Uncommon N-Terminal Modifications from Picrasma chinensis and Their Neuroprotective Activity.

Picrachinentins A-F (1-6, respectively), six novel cyclopeptide alkaloid-type burpitides (CPABs), were isolated and fully elucidated from the EtOH extract of the stems and leaves of Picrasma chinensis. Structurally, compounds 1-6 have a 14-membered paracyclophane ring system that was closed through an ether bond between the β-hydroxy amino acid and tyrosine and modified with a 4,5-methylenedioxybenzoyloxy (MDBz, 3 and 5) or hexanoyl (Hexa, 1, 2, 4, and 6) group at the N-terminus. Interestingly, this is the first report on the isolation and characterization of CPABs from plants of the Simaroubaceae family. In addition, all compounds showed a neuroprotective effect against H2O2-damaged SH-SY5Y cells. Compound 1 was further investigated for its neuroprotective activities using a 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)-induced Parkinson's disease animal model, and it dramatically improved MPTP-impaired motor behavioral performance. Biochemical analysis revealed compound 1 restored the tyrosine hydroxylase expression in the striatum of the MPTP-damaged mouse brain, which demonstrates its protective effect on dopaminergic neurons.

Studies on the Pollen Morphology of Simaroubaceae

In continuation to a previous communication on the pollen morphology of Asiatic representatives of the family Simaroubaceae (Basak, 1963), pollen grains of 17 more taxa have been described and illustrated. The study reveals that the pollen grains are more or less of uniform type. The significance of these pollen characters in taxonomic considerations is discussed.

Establishment of morphological markers to differentiate male and female plants in Ailanthus excelsa Roxb. using multiple logistic regression

Ailanthus excelsa Roxb., belongs to the family Simaroubaceae, is a fast-growing multipurpose tree, and used mainly as a source of fodder and shade. It bears male, female, and hermaphrodite flowers on separate plants. It has been observed that male plant has more leaf biomass during April-May in semi-arid regions of India (Jaipur). In its vegetative state, the sex of the tree cannot be identified. The present study has therefore been designed to investigate if there is any difference in male and female plants based on morphological descriptors namely stomata number, stomata length, stomata diameter, trichome number, trichome length, and trichome diameter. 20 plants with male flowers and 20 plants with female flowers have been studied. The data revealed that male plants have lower trichome diameter (11.91 µm) than female (14.18 µm) plants. Other parameters do not show any statistically significant difference (P > 0.05). The Omnibus Tests of the Model Coefficient obtained for trichome diameter (0.042) is reliable in improving the model, implying that the model is the best fit. To test the validity of this model, the Hosmer and Lemeshow test was performed, and the p-value of chi-square (0.405 > 0.05) indicates that the logistic model obtained above is the best-fit model. Further studies of trichome diameter at the seedling stage and then confirmation of plant sex at maturity level will help in establishing morphological markers in A. excelsa for identification of sex.

GLAUCARUBINONE - A LEAD MOLECULE FROM SIMAROUBA GLAUCA AS A POTENTIAL DRUG CANDIDATE, AN IN SILICO STUDY

Nature has always been a source of drug candidates. Since ancient times, people have been using plants and their metabolites for various medicinal purposes. Glaucarubinone is a quassinoid present in the family Simaroubaceae. Simarouba glauca, also known as Laxmitaru or paradise tree is grouped under the family Simaroubaceae, Glaucarubinone present in S. glauca is known for its medicinal property. Molecular docking methods are widely used to investigate the interactions between a drug candidate and its target, and to discern the therapeutic action to design new drug candidate with enhanced activities. The information generated from docking studies helps to obtain an insight into interactions of drug candidate with amino acid in the active site of the target proteins, and to predict the binding energy of ligands to the target. By molecular Dynamic Simulation, the flexibility and the conformational stability of target proteins-glaucarubinone complex is confirmed.

Midgut serine proteinases participate in dietary adaptations of the castor (Eri) silkworm Samia ricini Anderson transferred from Ricinus communis to an ancestral host, Ailanthus excelsa Roxb.

Dietary change influenced the life-history traits, nutritional utilization, and midgut serine proteinases in the larvae of the domesticated polyphagous S. ricini, transferred from R. communis (common name: castor; family Euphorbiaceae; the host plant implicated in its domestication) to A. excelsa (common name: Indian tree of heaven; family Simaroubaceae; an ancestral host of wild Samia species). Significantly higher values for fecundity and body weight were observed in larvae feeding on R. communis (Scr diet), and they took less time to reach pupation than insects feeding on A. excelsa (Scai diet). Nevertheless, the nutritional index for efficiency of conversion of digested matter (ECD) was similar for larvae feeding on the two plant species, suggesting the physiological adaptation of S. ricini (especially older instars) to an A. excelsa diet. In vitro protease assays and gelatinolytic zymograms using diagnostic substrates and protease inhibitors revealed significantly elevated levels (p ≤ 0.05) of digestive trypsins, which may be associated with the metabolic costs influencing slow growth in larvae feeding on A. excelsa. RT-PCR with semidegenerate serine proteinase gene-specific primers, and cloning and sequencing of 3' cDNA ends identified a large gene family comprising at least two groups of putative chymotrypsins (i.e., Sr I and Sr II) resembling invertebrate brachyurins/collagenases with wide substrate specificities, and five groups of putative trypsins (i.e., Sr III, Sr IV, Sr V, Sr VII, and Sr VIII). Quantitative RT-PCR indicated that transcripts belonging to the Sr I, Sr III, Sr IV, and Sr V groups, especially the Sr IV group (resembling achelase I from Lonomia achelous), were expressed differentially in the midguts of fourth instars reared on the two plant species. Sequence similarity indicated shared lineages with lepidopteran orthologs associated with expression in the gut, protein digestion, and phytophagy. The results obtained are discussed in the context of larval serine proteinases in dietary adaptations, domestication, and exploration of new host plant species for commercial rearing of S. ricini.

Anti-Inflammatory, Antinociceptive, Antipyretic, and Gastroprotective Effects of Eurycoma longifolia Jack Ethanolic Extract.

Tongkat ali (Eurycoma longifolia Jack) (ELJ) is a plant in the Simaroubaceae family. Its roots are used in traditional Thai medicine to treat inflammation, pain, and fever; however, the antiulcer abilities of its ethanolic extract have not been studied. This study examined the anti-inflammatory, antinociceptive, antipyretic, and gastroprotective effects of ethanolic ELJ extract in animal models and found that ELJ effectively reduced EPP-induced ear edema in a dose-dependent manner and that a high dose of ELJ inhibited carrageenan-induced hind paw edema formation. In cotton-pellet-induced granuloma formation, a high dose of ELJ suppressed the increases in wet granuloma weight but not dry or transudative weight. In the formalin-induced nociception study, ELJ had a significant dose-dependent inhibitory impact. Additionally, the study found that yeast-induced hyperthermia could be significantly reduced by antipyretic action at the highest dose of ELJ. In all the gastric ulcer models induced by chemical substances or physical activity, ELJ extracts at 150, 300, and 600 mg/kg also effectively prevented gastric ulcer formation. In the pyloric ligation model, however, the effects of ELJ extract on gastric volume, gastric pH, and total acidity were statistically insignificant. These findings support the current widespread use of Eurycoma longifolia Jack in traditional medicine, suggest the plant's medicinal potential for development of phytomedicines with anti-inflammatory, antinociceptive, and antipyretic properties, and support its use in the treatment of gastric ulcers due to its gastroprotective properties.

Study on the Phytochemical, Antioxidant and In Vitro Anticancer activity on root extract of Simarouba glauca DC

Plant made medicine plays main role in drug formulation and synthesis with moderate or no side effects. Simarouba glauca is exotic to India and known for its phytomedicine property belonging to the Simaroubaceae family prominent for its leaves arrangement and is called “Lakshmi taru” or “Paradise tree”. The goal of this study was to present the preliminary phytochemicals, antioxidants, and cytotoxicity mechanism of S. glauca root extracts in terms of apoptosis in cell cycle. Phytochemical, qualitative, and antioxidant assay analyses were performed with the standard protocol using HPTLC and cytotoxicity studies were analysed using a flow-cytometer. The Phytochemical screening revealed the presence of saponins, flavonoids, steroids, and triterpenoids. Furthermore, the extracts demonstrated potent antioxidant activity and could serve as a lead source of natural antioxidants. In a concentration-dependent manner, anticancer study demonstrated cytotoxicity against the A549 cell line by stopping the cells at the S-phase. The main investigation reveals the antiproliferative properties of S. glauca methanolic root extract. Identification of cytotoxic compounds and their mode of action require further in-depth research. The outcome of our investigation offers compelling evidence that S. glauca methanolic root extract can be used as an effective ethnomedicinal agent with the ability to treat human disorders.

Therapeutic potential of Simarouba glauca in treatment of Oral diseases

Simarouba glauca is an evergreen, flowering tree belonging to family Simaroubaceae. It is commonly called as LaxmiTaru or Paradise Tree. Since ancient times it is widely used as a traditional medicinal plant and different parts of the plant are used for treatment of diseases like malaria, dysentery and cancer. Studies on Simarouba glauca, revealed the presence of several essential phytoconstituents of major pharmacological significance. These phytoconstituents are known to impart a wide range of medicinal properties like anti-cancerous, anti-inflammatory, anti- oxidative, anti-microbial and hemostatic properties to its plant extract.A group of triterpenes called quassinoids is by far the most active phytoconstituent present in Simarouba glauca. In recent years, there is an increase in its popularity as several studies showed its success in treatment of cancers including oral cancer. Also, there is a growing demand for natural products over synthetic drugs as it exhibits less side effects and develop less resistance during drug therapy. However, further in-vivo studies and clinical trials are needed to authenticate the efficiency and safety of Simarouba glauca plant extracts in humans. The purpose of this review is to summarize the therapeutic and medicinal properties of Simarouba glauca and to explore its potential applications in dentistry.

β-carboline alkaloids in Picrasma quassioides and their chemotaxonomic significance

The previous study on Picrasma quassioides has indicated that β-carboline alkaloids are a class of unique structure from it, and exhibit chemotaxonomic significance and characterize the species well, which could serve as valuable chemotaxonomic markers for the identification of Picrasma quassioide. This work describes 116 β-carboline alkaloids from P. quassioide, and we summarize the chemotaxonomic value of β-carboline alkaloids in P. quassioide for further study. Our results showed that Picrasma quassioide is a typical species of the Simaroubaceae family and an important source of β-carboline alkaloids with chemotaxonomic significance with Ailanthus Desf., Brucea J. F. Mill., Zanthoxylum, Quassia, and Eurycoma genera, together with the Rutaceae, Apocynaceae, Amaranthaceae, Rubiaceae, and Apiaceae family have some chemotaxonomic relationships.

Phosphodiesterase-5 Inhibitory Activity of Canthin-6-One Alkaloids and the Roots of Eurycoma longifolia and Eurycoma harmandiana.

Eurycoma longifolia (EL) and Eurycoma harmandiana (EH) are natural medicinal plants belonging to the Simaroubaceae family, and are well-known for their ability to enhance male sexual performance. The present study investigated the phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE-5) inhibitory activity of intact roots of EL and EH. Additionally, canthin-6-one alkaloids, β-carboline alkaloids, and quassinoids were also screened for PDE-5 inhibitory activity. We developed in vitro root and callus cultures of EL and EH to determine their PDE-5 inhibitory activity. Our results indicated that canthin-6-one alkaloids, which include canthin-6-one-9-O-β-D-glucopyranoside, 9-methoxycanthin-6-one, canthin-6-one, and 9-hydroxycanthin-6-one, exhibited PDE-5 enzymatic inhibitory activity, with IC50 values of 2.86±0.23, 3.30±1.03, 4.31±0.52, and 4.66±1.13 μM, respectively. The ethanolic extract of the intact roots of EL and EH, and the in vitro root culture of EH had large amounts of canthin-6-one alkaloids (1.50±0.04, 2.12±0.03, and 3.48±0.08 mg/g dry weight, respectively), and showed potent PDE-5 inhibition. Our findings indicate that in vitro root cultures of EH may be used to replace intact plants, and canthin-6-one-9-O-β-D-glucopyranoside should be further investigated for development as a health supplement.

The complete chloroplast genome sequence of Picrasma quassioides (D. Don) Benn. 1844 (Simaroubaceae)

Picrasma quassioides is a member of the Simaroubaceae family and is widely used as a medicinal plant. In this study, we sequenced and assembled the complete chloroplast genome of P. quassioides. The chloroplast genome is 160,015 bp in length, with a large single-copy region of 87,136 bp, a small single-copy region of 18,069 bp, and a pair of inverted repeat regions of 27,405 bp. It contains a total of 110 unique genes, including 77 protein-coding genes, 29 tRNA genes, and 4 rRNA genes. Phylogenetic analysis showed that P. quassioides clustered well with Simaroubaceae plants, Eurycoma longifolia, Leitneria floridana, and Ailanthus latissimus.

Investigation of effective natural inhibitors for starch hydrolysing enzymes from Simaroubaceae plants by molecular docking analysis and comparison with in-vitro studies

The present study aims to find the effective natural enzyme inhibitors against alpha-amylase and alpha-glucosidase from the array of compounds identified in plants of the Simaroubaceae family using molecular docking and ADME/Toxicity studies. Among the 218 compounds docked against seven enzymes, buddlenol-A and citrusin-B showed the best binding energies (kcal/mol) of -7.830 and -7.383 against human salivary alpha-amylase and pancreatic alpha-amylase respectively. The other two compounds 9-hydroxycanthin-6-one and bruceolline-B had the best binding energy of -6.461 and -7.576 against N-terminal and C-terminal maltase glucoamylase respectively. Whereas the binding energy of prosopine (-6.499) and fisetinidol (-7.575) was considered as the best against N-terminal and C-terminal sucrase-isomaltase respectively. Picrasidine-X showed the best binding energy (-7.592) against yeast alpha-glucosidase. The study revealed that the seven compounds which showed the best binding energy against respective enzymes are considered as the ‘lead hit compounds’. Even though the ‘lead hit compounds’ are not obeying all the laws of ADMET, the drug-likeness properties of 9-hydroxycanthin-6-one, fisetinidol, picrasidine-X, and prosopine were considerable. Also, kaempferol-3-O-pentoside was the recent compound identified from the Simarouba glauca plant extract found to be one among the top five lead hit compounds against four enzymes. This study provides valuable insight into the direction of developing natural compounds as potential starch hydrolysing enzyme inhibitors for managing type 2 diabetes.

Anti-tuberculosis potential of bruceine: An in silico approach

Tuberculosis is an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The bacterial enzyme pantothenate synthetase (PS) catalyzes the synthesis of pantothenate, a precursor of coenzyme A. Hence, targeting PS is a potential mechanism in the development of anti-tuberculosis drugs. Bruceine, a highly oxygenated natural quassinoid molecule, is isolated from plants of the Simaroubaceae family. The anti-tuberculosis potential of eleven bruceine (A, B, C, D, E, G, H, I, J, K and L) has been investigated by in silico approach. The molecular docking (AutodockVina) and drug-likeness (Lipinski’s rule of five) analyses identified bruceine D as a potential inhibitor. Further, it has shown six hydrogen bond interactions with the key amino acids residues of the target protein, Tyr82, His135, Lys160 and Asp161. The ring-A and -D has contributed two hydrogen bonds, while one each from ring-C and -E. The results reveal that bruceine D possesses druglikeness property and binding energy of -9.3 kcal/mol. The binding score similar to pantoyl adenylate suggests chemical modifications to enhance the protein inhibition potency. Bruceine D has a great potential to inhibit PS and could contribute to the tuberculosis drug discovery process.

<i>Quassia undulata</i> Oil Exploitation: Extraction’s Yield, Phytochemical Profile of Seeds and Oilcake Nutritional Value

Quassia undulata is a plant that belongs to the Simaroubaceae family. In Africa, it occurs in the wooded savannah from Senegal in the west to the Central African Republic in the east. The seeds from the plant are very rich in oil. The traditional extraction of this oil involves a phase of boiling the powder from the seeds in a decoction of Piliostigma thonningii leaves. Thus, the aim of this study is to determine the impact of Piliostigma thonningii leaves on the extraction yield, to assess the phytochemical profile of seeds and oilcake and, to determine the nutritional value of the cakes obtained after extraction. Thus, the traditional extraction of oil was carried out in the laboratory and physico-chemical and phytochemical analyses were carried out on the water decoction, the oil and, the oilcake. The results showed that the traditional extraction gives a low extraction yield (5.18% with PD and 6.12% without PD) compared to the Soxhlet extraction (56.9%). On the other hand, it was found that oil obtained by traditional extraction in the presence of Piliostigma thonningii leaves was of better physicochemical quality. Finally, oilcake very rich in proteins (36.71% - 42.69%) and mineral elements (110.9 - 152.33 mg/100g of calcium, 544.75 - 620.77 mg/100g of Potassium and 331.11 - 459.68 mg/100g of Magnesium) justify their use in human food. However, investigations should point to the impact of this traditional technique on the elimination of quassinoids, toxins and antihelminth compounds present in the seeds.

Exploration of Phytopharmacognostic Study of Alianthus excelsa Roxb.(Simaroubaceae) Leaves

Aim: The purpose of this research is to look at the pharmacognostic and phytochemical properties of Alianthus excelsa leaves. Methods and Materials: The tree Alianthus excelsa Roxb. belongs to the Simaroubaceae family and is native to Central and Southern India. The entire methanolic extract of Alianthus excelsa leaves was examined for its microscopical, physicochemical, phytochemical, isolation, characterisation, and anti-inflammatory activities. Leaf powder was tested for total ash, water soluble, acid insoluble, alcohol soluble extractive, water soluble extractive, moisture content, and fluorescence property.
 Results: Carbohydrates, phenolics, flavonoids, alkaloids, and amino acids were found in the leaf methanolic oven dried extract. To determine the existence of phenolic content in extracts, total phenolic and total flavonoid contents were calculated. Phytoconstituents such as flavonoids and saponin glycoside were found in the leaf sections throughout the experiment, which were isolated using column chromatography and characterised using IR, NMR, and mass spectroscopy. Antiplasmodial and cytotoxic effects of the methanol extract, canthinone alkaloids, squalene- and protolimonoid-type triterpenes from Homalolepis suffruticosa roots

Ethnopharmacological relevanceDifferent species of the Simaroubaceae family are used in traditional medicine to treat malaria. Among these is Homalolepis suffruticosa (syn. Simaba suffruticosa and Quassia suffruticosa), which is native to Central Brazil and popularly known as calunga. However, there is a lack of investigation concerning its antimalarial effects. Aim of the studyTo investigate the antiplasmodial and cytotoxic effects of the isolated metabolites and methanol extract from H. suffruticosa roots as well as to conduct the dereplication of this extract aiming to characterize its metabolic profile by UPLC-DAD-ESI-MS/MS. Materials and methodsMethanol extract of the H. suffruticosa roots and six isolated compounds were evaluated against chloroquine-resistant Plasmodium falciparum W2 strain by the PfLDH method and cytotoxicity in HepG2 cells by the MTT assay. Dereplication of the extract was performed by UPLC-DAD-ESI-MS/MS. ResultsThe six isolated compounds disclosed high to moderate antiplasmodial activity (IC50 0.0548 ± 0.0083 μg/mL to 26.65 ± 2.40 μg/mL) and cytotoxicity was in the range of CC50 0.62 ± 0.33 μg/mL to 56.43 ± 2.54 μg/mL, while 5-metoxycantin-6-one proved to be the most potent constituent of the six assayed ones. The methanol extract of the roots showed high in vitro antiplasmodial activity (IC50 1.88 ± 0.56 μg/mL), moderate cytotoxicity (CC50 41.93 ± 2.30 μg/mL), and good selectivity index (SI = 22.30). Finally, C20 quassinoids and canthin-6-one alkaloids were putatively identified in the H. suffruticosa methanol extract by LC-MS. ConclusionsTaken together, the isolated compounds, mainly the 5-metoxycantin-6-one and the methanol extract from H. suffruticosa roots, disclose good antiplasmodial activity, supporting the ethnopharmacological history of the Simaroubaceae species as traditional antimalarial drugs.

Chemometric analysis applied to a chemophenetics approach in Simaroubaceae family: The relevance of alkaloids and quassinoids

Simaroubaceae family belongs to the order Sapindales, which in turn is part of Eurosides II (APG IV). It consists of 23 genera: Ailanthus; Amaroria; Brucea; Castela; Eurycoma; Gymnostemon; Hannoa; Holacantha; Homalolepsis; Iridosma; Laumoniera; Leitneria; Nothospondias; Odyendeya; Perriera; Picrasma; Picrolemma; Pierreodendron; Quassia; Samadera; Simaba; Simarouba; Soulamea. Over the years, the classification of Simaroubaceae has changed and there is still a lot to evolve in this direction since there are still not many studies on some of its genera. In this sense, the present work discusses the chemistry of Simaroubaceae through the micromolecular chemical data, evolutionary indexes and chemometric analysis in order to assess affinities between its genera. The chemistry of this family is diverse and includes quassinoids, alkaloids, triterpenes, flavonoids, simple phenolics, coumarins, lignans and quinones. In addition to presenting specificity, quassinoids and alkaloids are prevalent among the substances already identified in the family and can be considered the chemical markers of it. Quassionoids are degraded triterpenes and can be classified as c25, c22, c20, c 19 and c18; c20 being the most common type in the family. The alkaloids already isolated in Simaroubaceae are predominantly beta-carboline and canthinone, both originating from the amino acid tryptophan. The evolutionary indexes calculated for the chemical markers showed great variation between the genera of Simaroubaceae and showed no correlation among them. The chemometric analysis positioned Simaroubaceae close to Rutaceae within the order Sapindales and, among the genera, alkaloids and quassinoids were very important for their distribution in Simaroubaceae considering the evolutionary proximity, corroborating their selection as chemical markers.
