The cosmic ray detector for the NICA collider

Multi-Purpose Detector (MPD) is a main part of a new Ion Collider fAcility (NICA) located in Dubna, Russia. To increase MPD functionality, it was proposed to add an additional muon trigger system for off-beam calibration of the MPD sub-detectors and for rejection of cosmic ray background during experiments. The system could also be very useful for astrophysical observations of cosmic showers initiated by high energy primary particles. This article describes the main goals of MCORD detector and the early stage of MCORD design, based on plastic scintillators with silicon photomultiplier photodetectors (SiPM) for scintillation readout and electronic system based on MicroTCA standard.

Performance of the Compact High Energy Camera SiPM Prototype Front-End Electronics proposed for the Cherenkov Telescope Array

The Compact High Energy Camera (CHEC) is a full-waveform capture camera, designed and proposed for the dual mirror, Schwarzschild–Couder, Small Sized Telescope of the Cherenkov Telescope Array. CHEC-S, the second prototype, is based upon silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) photodetectors optimised for single photon counting and nanosecond timing. The camera liquid-cooled focal plane plate comprises a total of 2048 SiPM pixels organised as 32 independent sensor and front-end electronics (FEE) modules providing event detection and signal digitisation of Cherenkov light flashes. Each module comprises an 8 × 8 tile of SiPM pixels, coupled to a 64-channel preamplifier-buffer followed by a FEE module based around the TARGET chipset, which combines triggering (T5TEA) and waveform capture (TARGET C) functionality.We describe a selection of end-to-end performance tests and results conducted at the University of Leicester in the UK. Testing was performed at single module level focusing on characterising the SiPM photodetectors, optimised preamplifier-buffer and updated CHEC-S FEE readout module. Presented results include single photoelectron response, gain-matching, signal range, electronic channel crosstalk, SiPM angular dependency and optical crosstalk.

The electronics for TOF system of the CMD-3 detector

The time-of-flight (TOF) system now is installed at the CMD-3 detector of the VEPP-2000 electron-positron collider at the Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics. It is based on the strips of organic scintillator with shifter fibers readout and silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) photodetectors. The new electronics for TOF system is designed at the Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics. The main feature of the new electronics is usage a ripple-free technology for providing a bias voltage for SiPM photodetectors. Also this design has very low power consumption. It allows the individual controlled bias voltage generator to be integrated to front-end electronics, near the photodetectors. In this paper the structure of the TOF electronic hardware is described.

Development and characterization of a round hand-held silicon photomultiplier based gamma camera for intraoperative imaging.

This paper describes the development of a hand-held gamma camera for intraoperative surgical guidance that is based on silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) technology. The camera incorporates a cerium doped lanthanum bromide (LaBr3:Ce) plate scintillator, an array of 80 SiPM photodetectors and a two-layer parallel-hole collimator. The field of view is circular with a 60 mm diameter. The disk-shaped camera housing is 75 mm in diameter, approximately 40.5 mm thick and has a mass of only 1.4 kg, permitting either hand-held or arm-mounted use. All camera components are integrated on a mobile cart that allows easy transport. The camera was developed for use in surgical procedures including determination of the location and extent of primary carcinomas, detection of secondary lesions and sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB). Here we describe the camera design and its principal operating characteristics, including spatial resolution, energy resolution, sensitivity uniformity, and geometric linearity. The gamma camera has an intrinsic spatial resolution of 4.2 mm FWHM, an energy resolution of 21.1 % FWHM at 140 keV, and a sensitivity of 481 and 73 cps/MBq when using the single- and double-layer collimators, respectively.

Evaluation of a Modular PET System Architecture with Synchronization over Data Links

A DAQ architecture for a PET system is presented that focuses on modularity, scalability and reusability. The system defines two basic building blocks: data acquisitors and concentrators, which can be replicated in order to build a complete DAQ of variable size. Acquisition modules contain a scintillating crystal and either a position-sensitive photomultiplier (PSPMT) or an array of silicon photomultipliers (SiPM). The detector signals are processed by AMIC, an integrated analog front-end that generates programmable analog outputs which contain the first few statistical moments of the light distribution in the scintillator. These signals are digitized at 156.25 Msamples/s with free-running ADCs and sent to an FPGA which detects single gamma events, extracts position and time information online using digital algorithms, and submits these data to a concentrator module. Concentrator modules collect single events from acquisition modules and perform coincidence detection and data aggregation. A synchronization scheme over data links is implemented that calibrates each link's latency independently, ensuring that there are no limitations on module mobility, and that the architecture is arbitrarily scalable. Prototype boards with both acquisition and concentration functionality have been built for evaluation purposes. The performance of a small PET system with two detectors based on continuous scintillators is presented. A synchronization error below 50 ps rms is measured, and energy resolutions of 19% and 24% and timing resolutions of 2.0 ns and 4.7 ns FWHM are obtained for PMT and SiPM photodetectors, respectively.

Readout Electronics and Data Acquisition of a Positron Emission Tomography Time-of-Flight Detector Module With Waveform Digitizer

A multi-element silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) based time-of-flight (ToF) detector module for positron emission tomography (PET) has been developed. The detector module is based on a 4 × 4 array of LYSO-SiPM elements (Hamamatsu MPPC S10931-050P), with individual bias supply for each element. Each element is read out by a wideband, low-noise RF amplifier to maximize timing performance. All 16 outputs are digitized with a high-speed CAEN V1742 digitizer module (32 + 2 channels, 5 GS/s sampling, 12-bit amplitude resolution, 500 MHz input bandwidth) to acquire raw pulse waveforms for offline timing and energy extraction. As the digitizer has no internal trigger for individual channels, a trigger board has been developed which produces a fast pulse that triggers the digitizer whenever any pixel of the detector detects a signal in coincidence with a reference detector. To assess the performance of the prototype module, a 4 × 4 LYSO scintillator array ( 3×3×5 mm <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">3</sup> elements) was coupled to the SiPM photodetectors and energy/timing resolution measurements were performed using a Ge-68 source. At 1.4 V overvoltage, the energy resolution, not corrected for saturation effects of the SiPM, varied from a minimum of 10.1% to a maximum of 13.3% with an average energy resolution of 11.4 ± 0.8% across the 16 channels. With a reference detector (single 3×3×5 mm <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">3</sup> LYSO crystal coupled to a Hamamatsu MPPC S10362-33), the average coincidence resolving time (CRT) across the detector module was 206 ± 7 ps FWHM at 2.4 V overvoltage-the best reported for a PET block (array) detector based on conventional photodetectors to date.

Time of flight positron emission tomography towards 100ps resolution with L(Y)SO: an experimental and theoretical analysis

Scintillation crystals have a wide range of applications in detectors for high energy and medical physics. They are recquired to have not only good energy resolution, but also excellent time resolution. In medical applications, L(Y)SO crystals are commonly used for time of flight positron emission tomography (TOF-PET). This study aims at determining the experimental and theoretical limits of timing using L(Y)SO based scintillators coupled to silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs). Measurements are based on the time-over-threshold method in a coincidence setup utilizing the ultra-fast amplifier-discriminator NINO and a fast oscilloscope. Using a 2 × 2 × 3 mm3 LSO:Ce codoped 0.4% Ca crystal coupled to a commercially available SiPM (Hamamatsu S10931-050P MPPC), we achieve a coincidence time resolution (CTR) of 108±5ps FWHM measured at E=511keV. We determine the influence of the data acquisition system to 27±2ps FWHM and thus negligible as compared to the CTR. This shows that L(Y)SO scintillators coupled to SiPM photodetectors are capable of achieving very good time resolution close to the desired 100ps FWHM for TOF-PET systems. To fully understand the measured values, we developed a simulation tool in MATLAB that incorporates the timing properties of the photodetector, the scintillation properties of the crystal and the light transfer within the crystal simulated by SLITRANI. The simulations are compared with measured data in order to determine their predictive power. Finally we use this model to discuss the influence of several important parameters on the time resolution like scintillation rise- and fall time and light yield, as well as single photon time resolution (SPTR) and the detection efficiency of the SiPM. In addition we find the influence of photon travel time spread in the crystal not negligible on the CTR, even for the used 2 × 2 × 3 mm3 geometry.

A Systematic Study to Optimize SiPM Photo-Detectors for Highest Time Resolution in PET

We report on a systematic study of time resolution made with three different commercial silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) (Hamamatsu MPPC S10931-025P, S10931-050P, and S10931-100P) and two LSO scintillating crystals. This study aimed to determine the optimum detector conditions for highest time resolution in a prospective time-of-flight positron emission tomography (TOF-PET) system. Measurements were based on the time over threshold method in a coincidence setup using the ultrafast amplifier-discriminator NINO and a fast oscilloscope. Our tests with the three SiPMs of the same area but of different SPAD sizes and fill factors led to best results with the Hamamatsu type of 50×50×μm <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2</sup> single-pixel size. For this type of SiPM and under realistic geometrical PET scanner conditions, i.e., with 2×2×10×mm <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">3</sup> LSO crystals, a coincidence time resolution of 220 ±4 ps FWHM could be achieved. The results are interpreted in terms of SiPM photon detection efficiency (PDE), dark noise, and photon yield.

Characterization of a scintillating mini-detector for time-of-flight positron emission tomography with depth-of-interaction

By exploiting a suitable treatment of the scintillator surfaces, along with silicon photomultiplier photodetectors and specific algorithms for raw data analysis, we achieved a remarkable tradeoff between energy, time, and depth-of-interaction (DOI) resolution, thus supporting the feasibility of a prostate time-of-flight positron emission tomography probe, magnetic resonance imaging compatible, with the required features and performance. In numbers this means a detector element of 1.5 mm × 1.5 mm × 10 mm, promising to achieve at the same time energy resolution around 11.5%, coincidence resolving time around 300 ps corresponding to a space resolution <5 cm along the line of response, and DOI resolution even below 1 mm. We stress that such a time resolution allows to increase significantly the noise equivalent counting rate, and consequently improve the image quality and the lesion detection capability.

Performance evaluation of SiPM photodetectors for PET imaging in the presence of magnetic fields

The multi-pixel photon counter (MPPC) or silicon photomultiplier (SiPM), recently introduced as a solid-state photodetector, consists of an array of Geiger-mode photodiodes (microcells). It is a promising device for PET due to its potential for high photon detection efficiency (PDE) and its foreseeable immunity to magnetic fields. It is also easy to use with simple read-outs, has a high gain and a small size. In this work we evaluate the in field performance of three 1×1 mm 2 (with 100, 400 and 1600 microcells, respectively) and one 6×6 mm 2 (arranged as a 2×2 array) Hamamatsu MPPCs for their use in PET imaging. We examine the dependence of the energy resolution and the gain of these devices on the temperature and reverse bias voltage, when coupled to LYSO scintillator crystals under conditions that one would find in a PET system. We find that the 400 and 1600 microcells models and the 2×2 array are suitable for small-size crystals, like those employed in high resolution small animal scanners. We have confirmed the good performance of these devices up to magnetic fields of 7 T as well as their suitability for performing PET acquisitions in the presence of fast switching gradients and high duty radiofrequency MRI sequences.
