Factors controlling spatiotemporal variability of soil carbon accumulation and stock estimates in a tidal salt marsh

Abstract. Tidal salt marshes are important contributors to soil carbon (C) stocks despite their relatively small land surface area. Although it is well understood that salt marshes have soil C burial rates orders of magnitude greater than those of terrestrial ecosystems, there is a wide range in accrual rates among spatially distributed marshes. In addition, wide ranges in C accrual rates also exist within a single marsh ecosystem. Tidal marshes often contain multiple species of cordgrass due to variations in hydrology and soil biogeochemistry caused by microtopography and distance from tidal creeks, creating distinct subsites. Our overarching objective was to observe how soil C concentration and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) vary across four plant phenophases and across three subsites categorized by unique vegetation and hydrology. We also investigated the dominant biogeochemical controls on the spatiotemporal variability of soil C and DOC concentrations. We hypothesized that subsite biogeochemistry drives spatial heterogeneity in soil C concentration, and this causes variability in total soil C and DOC concentrations at the marsh scale. In addition, we hypothesized that soil C concentration and porewater biogeochemistry vary temporally across the four plant phenophases (i.e., senescence, dormancy, green-up, maturity). To test these interrelated hypotheses, we quantified soil C and DOC concentrations in 12 cm sections of soil cores (0–48 cm depth) across time (i.e., phenophase) and space (i.e., subsite), alongside several other porewater biogeochemical variables. Soil C concentration varied significantly (p < 0.05) among the three subsites and was significantly greater during plant dormancy. Soil S, porewater sulfide, redox potential, and depth predicted 44 % of the variability in soil C concentration. There were also significant spatial differences in the optical characterization properties of DOC across subsites. Our results show that soil C varied spatially across a marsh ecosystem by up to 63 % and across plant phenophase by 26 %, causing variability in soil C accrual rates and stocks depending on where and when samples are taken. This shows that hydrology, biogeochemistry, and plant phenology are major controls on salt marsh C content. It is critical to consider spatiotemporal heterogeneity in soil C concentration and porewater biogeochemistry to account for these sources of uncertainty in C stock estimates. We recommend that multiple locations and sampling time points are sampled when conducting blue C assessments to account for ecosystem-scale variability.

Landform evolution of the Qilian Shan since 120 Ma revealed by Apatite fission track data

The Cenozoic uplift of the Qilian Shan is intimately connecting with the collision of India and Eurasian Plates, while the deformation mechanism is still a mystery for its far distance from the collision boundary. The first requirement for answering this question is to obtain the uplift process of this range, which remains debate. In this study, we compiled apatite fission track data from previous studies on the range, aims to reveal the spatial and temporal disparities or similarities for the exhumation process. Most age-evolution profiles and thermo-modeling results show a low exhumation rate during 80-20 Ma, corresponding to shorter track lengths, indicating a lower erosion rate and lower relief across the whole Qilian Shan region. The result also reveals two stages of rapid exhumation, during Cretaceous (120-80 Ma) and since Miocene (20-0 Ma). The exhumation history of the Qilian has no significant spatial difference, and the outward growth was limited at the southern and northern edge after 5 Ma. This temporal and spatial pattern for the exhumation of the Qilian Shan suggests that there was probably no obvious uplift at the initial collision of India-Tibet plates, and support the proposal that the whole Qilian range uplifted synchronously since 20 Ma. The study of coevolution relationship among coastal marine economy, innovation, and ecology based on Chinese complex systems

Based on the complex system theory, this paper constructs a collaborative evolution model of marine economy, innovation and ecological protection. Findings show the MEIE orderliness shows an upward trend, and the adaptability of the system increase, however there are significant spatial difference. The synergistic relationship between economic development and innovation system is characterized by ‘bias’ and ‘mutual beneficial’. The Synergistics relationship between economic development-ecological protection system is ‘bias’. The Synergistics relationship between innovation-ecological protection system tend to be ‘bias’ or ‘inhibition’.

The effects of damming and dam regulation on a river–lake-aquifer system: 3D groundwater flow modeling of Poyang Lake (China)

Large numbers of dams are planned or constructed for hydroelectric power production, water supply, and flood control in many rivers around the world. While the social and environmental impacts of dams are now well-understood, there is little knowledge about the effects of dams on groundwater-surface water interactions in a complex lake–river-aquifer system. This study adopts a three-dimensional groundwater numerical model to quantify the potential impacts of dam construction, on regional groundwater flow system, exemplified by the proposed Poyang Lake Hydraulic Dam (PLHD) in China. Once implemented, the PLHD will regulate lake levels, artificially controlling the lake inundation area during the recession season (September-October) and the dry season (November-December). Modeling results indicated that the increase in lake infiltration induced by PLHD regulation would alter the regional water exchange pattern. The PLHD regulation will likely enhance the groundwater storage by 20.44 % in the general dry year (i.e., 2018), alleviating 78.1 % of the groundwater deficit in the extreme dry year (i.e., 2019). Additionally, the response of groundwater dynamics to the PLHD regulation exhibits significant spatial differences between the upstream and downstream areas of the dam, primarily depending on topographical changes. Overall, the PLHD regulation is most likely to impact groundwater levels across an area of approximately 5,700 km2, and the associated groundwater storage is anticipated to reach a stable state, under future long-term regulation. Our findings may guide policy-makers wishing to develop more suitable PLHD scheduling plans and floodplain protection strategies by providing reliable information regarding groundwater storage change and ecosystem succession.

Analysis of spatio-temporal changes in net primary productivity and their driving factors in ecological functional areas of the Yellow River Basin

The Yellow River Basin (YRB) is an important region for both ecological and economic growth in China, and a healthy and stable ecological environment is fundamental to achieving high-quality development. Investigating the spatio-temporal changs of vegetation carbon sinks in the YRB is necessary to improve understanding of the regional carbon cycle. This study analyzed the YRB using the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform. The basin was divided into sections based on ecological function regionalization schemes. We applied Theil-Sen median trend analysis and Spearman correlation analysis, along with the lasso regression model, to examine the NPP's temporal and spatial patterns and its driving factors in these regions. The objective was to examine the NPP’ s temporal and spatial patterns and its driving factors in these regions, identifying commonalities within regions and differences between regions, while analyzing in a targeted manner the lack of vegetation carbon sequestration in ecological areas. This study highlighted the importance of ecological engineering in ecological civilization and carbon neutrality, providing scientific theoretical support and a decision-making basis for the realization of carbon neutrality. The research results indicate significant upward trends (p<0.001) in both the average annual NPP (AANPP) growth rate (57.98%) and the total annual NPP (TANPP) growth rate (41.9%) in the YRB from 2001 to 2020. The multi-year average NPP (MYANPP) exhibit a spatial distribution with high values in the south and low values in the north. The spatial distribution of NPP exhibits notable spatial aggregation and heterogeneity, where regions demonstrating improvement trends constitute 93.01% of the area, and approximately 79.73% of this region displays low volatility. A high-value area is concentrated in the Agroecological Zone of the Fenwei Basin (I-11), the Loess Plateau Agriculture and Grassland Ecological Zone (I-12), and the Qinba Mountains Deciduous and Evergreen Broad-leaved Forest Ecological Zone (I-15), with significant spatial differences. Temperature, precipitation, and forests are the foremost elements affecting NPP in the YRB, exhibiting positive correlations. Conversely, farmland displays negative correlations. Overall, NPP shows an increasing trend in all ecological function areas, and the NPP of the YRB shows a trend of improvement as a whole, as the ecological environment of the YRB has improved significantly.

Terrestrial and marine POC export fluxes estimated by 234Th–238U disequilibrium and δ13C measurements in the East China Sea shelf

AbstractThe use of 234Th–238U disequilibrium has been widely employed to estimate the sinking flux of particulate organic carbon (POC) from the upper sea and ocean. Here, the deficits of 234Th relative to 238U in the water column and the carbon isotope signature (δ13C) of POC in the East China Sea (ECS) Shelf were measured, which was used to distinguish the fraction of marine and terrestrial POC export fluxes. In the ECS Shelf, very strong deficits of 234Th relative to 238U were observed throughout the water column, with 234Th/238U activity ratios ranging from 0.158 ± 0.045 to 0.904 ± 0.068 (averaging 0.426 ± 0.159). The residence times of particle reactive radionuclide 234Th (τTh–T) in the ECS shelf water varied between 9 and 44 days, which is significantly shorter than that in the continental slope area or the basin area. This phenomenon indicates that there is a more rapid particle scavenging process in the ECS shelf water compared to the continental slope and basin upper water. By applying a two-end-member mixing model based on the δ13C, the fraction of terrestrial POC was estimated to be 0 to 74% (mean: 30 ± 22%) and the fraction of marine POC was in the range of 25% to 100% (mean: 70 ± 22%). Fluxes of marine and terrestrial POC settling to the seafloor exhibited significant spatial differences among different stations, ranging from 11 to 129 mmol C/m2/day and from 2.6 to 38 mmol C/m2/day, respectively. The averaged terrestrial POC fluxes in the southern and northern ECS Shelf were similar (~ 21 to 24 mmol C/m2/day), while the marine POC fluxes in the north (86 ± 37 mmol C/m2/day) were approximately four times higher than those in the south (26 ± 20 mmol C/m2/day). Interestingly, the estimated export flux of both marine and terrestrial POC were approximately one order of magnitude higher than the previously reported burial fluxes of POC (ranging from 1.1 ± 0.1 to 11.4 ± 1.1 mmol C/m2/day) in the underlying bottom sediments, indicating that the majority (&gt; 90%) of both terrestrial and marine POC exported from the upper water column are degraded in the sediments of the ECS Shelf. This “carbon missing” phenomenon can greatly be attributed to rapid decomposition by other processes (including microbial reworking, cross-shelf transport, and possible consumption by benthic organisms). Our findings highlight the dynamic nature of carbon cycling in the continental shelf and the need for further research to understand these processes and improve carbon budget assessments.

Analysis of Vegetation Environmental Stress and the Lag Effect in Countries along the “Six Economic Corridors”

Climate conditions have a significant impact on the growth of vegetation in terrestrial ecosystems, and the response of vegetation to climate shows different lag effects with the change in spatial pattern and category of the ecosystem. Exploring the interaction mechanism between climate and vegetation growth is helpful to promote the sustainable development of the regional ecological environment. Using normalized vegetation index (NDVI) and meteorological data, based on univariate linear regression and partial correlation analysis, this study explores the temporal and spatial pattern and change trend of vegetation cover in regions and node cities along the “six economic corridors”, and analyzes the environmental stress of vegetation growth and the lag effect of climate response. This study shows that there are great differences in the overall vegetation coverage along the “six economic corridors”. The vegetation coverage in Southeast Asia is the best and that in central and West Asia is the worst. The vegetation coverage in the study area shows an improvement trend, accounting for 39.6% of the total area. There are significant differences in the lag effect of vegetation response and the main climate factors affecting vegetation growth, which is related to the diversity of vegetation and climate characteristics. In this study, we selected regions along the “six economic corridors” that exhibit large latitude and altitude gradients, diverse climate types, and significant seasonal changes and spatial differences in climate conditions as our research areas. Additionally, we considered the impact of different regions and various types of vegetation on their response to climate change. This is of great significance for gaining a deeper understanding of the response mechanism of global climate change and vegetation ecology. Furthermore, our research can provide valuable information to support the ecological environment protection of different typical vegetation against extreme climates, ultimately contributing to the sustainable development of “the Belt and Road”.

From here to where: assessing the infrastructure financialization in urban China

PurposeInfrastructure financialization plays a critical role in infrastructure development and urban growth around the world. However, on the one hand, the existing research on the infrastructure financialization focuses on qualitative and lacks quantitative country-specific studies. On the other hand, the spatial heterogeneity and influencing factors of infrastructure financialization are ignored. This study takes China as a typical case to identify and analyze the spatial characteristics, development process and impact factors of infrastructure financialization.Design/methodology/approachTo assess the development and characteristics of infrastructure financialization in China, this study constructs an evaluation index of infrastructure financialization based on the infrastructure financialization ratio (IFR). This study then analyzes the evolution process and spatial pattern of China's infrastructure financialization through the spatial analysis method. Furthermore, this study identifies and quantitatively analyzes the influencing factors of infrastructure financialization based on the spatial Dubin model. Finally, this study offers a policy suggestion as a governance response.FindingsThe results demonstrate that infrastructure financialization effectively promotes the development of infrastructure in China. Second, there are significant spatial differences in China’s infrastructure financialization. Third, many factors affect infrastructure financialization, with government participation having the greatest impact. In addition, over-financialization of infrastructure has the potential to lead to government debt risks, which is a critical challenge the Chinese Government must address. Finally, this study suggests that infrastructure financialization requires more detailed, tailored,and place-specific policy interventions by the government.Originality/valueThis study not only contributes to enriching the knowledge body of global financialization theory but also helps optimize infrastructure investment and financing policies in China and provides peer reference for other developing countries.

A novel hybrid model combined with ensemble embedded feature selection method for estimating reference evapotranspiration in the North China Plain

The reference evapotranspiration (ETo) is a key parameter in achieving sustainable use of agricultural water resources. To accurately acquire ETo under limited conditions, this study combined the northern goshawk optimization algorithm (NGO) with the extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) model to propose a novel NGO-XGBoost model. The performance of this model was evaluated using meteorological data from 30 stations in the North China Plain and compared with XGBoost, random forest (RF), and k nearest neighbor (KNN) models. An ensemble embedded feature selection (EEFS) method combined with the results from RF, XGBoost, adaptive boosting (AdaBoost), and categorical boosting (CatBoost) models is used to obtain the importance of meteorological factors in estimating ETo, and thereby determine the optimal combination of inputs to the model. The results indicated that by using the top 3, 4, and 5 important factors as input combinations, all models achieved high ETo estimation accuracy. It is worth noting that there were significant spatial differences in the estimation precisions of the four models, but the NGO-XGBoost model exhibited consistently high estimation precisions, with global performance indicator (GPI) rankings of 1st, and the range of coefficient of determination (R2), nash efficiency coefficient (NSE), root mean square error (RMSE), mean absolute error (MAE) and mean bias error (MBE) were 0.920–0.998, 0.902–0.998, 0.078–0.623 mm d−1, 0.058–0.430 mm d−1, and −0.254–0.062 mm d−1, respectively. Furthermore, the accuracy of the NGO-XGBoost model in estimating ETo varied across different seasons, which was more significantly affected by humidity and wind speed in winter. When the target station data was insufficient, the NGO-XGBoost model was trained by using the historical data from neighboring stations and still maintained a high precision. Overall, this study recommends a reliable method for estimating ETo, which provides a reference for accurately calculating ETo in the North China Plain in the absence of meteorological data.

Response of the copepod community to interannual differences in sea-ice cover and water masses in the northern Barents Sea

The reduction of Arctic summer sea ice due to climate change can lead to increased primary production in parts of the Barents Sea if sufficient nutrients are available. Changes in the timing and magnitude of primary production may have cascading consequences for the zooplankton community and ultimately for higher trophic levels. In Arctic food webs, both small and large copepods are commonly present, but may have different life history strategies and hence different responses to environmental change. We investigated how contrasting summer sea-ice cover and water masses in the northern Barents Sea influenced the copepod community composition and secondary production of small and large copepods along a transect from 76°N to 83°N in August 2018 and August 2019. Bulk abundance, biomass, and secondary production of the total copepod community did not differ significantly between the two years. There were however significant spatial differences in the copepod community composition and production, with declining copepod abundance from Atlantic to Arctic waters and the highest copepod biomass and production on the Barents Sea shelf. The boreal Calanus finmarchicus showed higher abundance, biomass, and secondary production in the year with less sea-ice cover and at locations with a clear Atlantic water signal. Significant differences in the copepod community between areas in the two years could be attributed to interannual differences in sea-ice cover and Atlantic water inflow. Small copepods contributed more to secondary production in areas with no or little sea ice and their production was positively correlated to water temperature and ciliate abundance. Large copepods contributed more to secondary production in areas with extensive sea ice and their production was positively correlated with chlorophyll a concentration. Our results show how pelagic communities might function in a future ice-free Barents Sea, in which the main component of the communities are smaller copepods, and the secondary production they generate is available in energetically less resource-rich portions.

Quantitative characteristics and influencing factors of Tibetan Buddhist religious space with monasteries as the carrier: a case study of U-Tsang, China

Tibetan Buddhism has an inseparable connection with the spatial characteristics, development process, and human-natural environment of the Tibetan Plateau. This paper takes monasteries as carriers of Tibetan Buddhist culture in U-Tsang region which is one of the traditional geographical units of Tibet. Using geospatial analysis methods, this study explores the spatial quantification characteristics of Tibetan Buddhist monasteries and qualitatively and quantitatively analyzes the factors that influence the spatial distribution of monasteries. The results indicate that: (1) Political activities of human society influence the pattern of political power. Under the unique context of Tibetan theocracy system, the scope of political authority has a significant influence and affects the religious spatial pattern in the U-Tsang region throughout history. The distribution of monasteries in the U-Tsang region shows significant spatial differences at three sub-regional scales. (2) The religious spatial pattern in the U-Tsang is the result of the diverse interaction of human-natural factors. The results indirectly endorse that religious space is an inevitable product of the interaction between humans and the environment. (3) The religious spatial distribution patterns in the three major Tibetan regions have distinct characteristics, closely related to the superior conditions of their respective historical and geographical environments.

SOC and TN fluctuations determine the variations in microbial enzymatic activities under diverse land use types in the Central Himalaya, India

Soil microbial enzymatic activities, often used as indicators of soil health and fertility, are vulnerable to changes in climate and anthropogenic activities. This study analyses the responses of specific soil enzymatic activities– dehydrogenase (DHA), acid phosphatase (APH), β-glucosidase (BG) and urease (URE)– in Nitosols/Luvisols of the subtropical zone of the Central Himalaya, India. We investigated how these enzymatic activities vary with different land uses: arable land (AL), kitchen garden (KG) and peach orchard (PO), across four villages– Niglat, Kainchidham, Majhera and Syalikhet. Considering associated management practices, we quantified cumulative average soil enzymatic activities for the rabi season (2017–2018). In general, catalytic activity of the selected enzymes was highest in Syalikhet and lowest in Majhera. However, for land use types, enzymatic activities were lower in AL and KG (75.56–90.17% and 39.41–61.72%, respectively) compared to PO values. MANOVA analysis evaluated significant spatial differences (P < 0.001) in enzymatic activities. Soil enzymatic mean values were highest in the surface layer (0–10 cm) and decreased gradually with increasing depth. Parameters such as soil moisture content (SMC) and pH, along with vegetation, management practices, and nutrients such as SOC, TN, K, AP, and N forms (NH4+–N and NO3––N) showed significant and strong correlations with all the soil enzyme activities (r = 0.40–0.97; P < 0.05). TN, SOC, K, SMC, pH, AP, NH4+- N, and clay content were key determining factors of soil enzymatic activities, explaining approximately 59% of the variation. These results suggest that using soil microbial enzymatic activities as soil quality indicators is a feasible approach to assess the impacts of vegetation, management practices, and soil profile depths in soils under different land use types/systems in selected impoverished villages of the fragile Central Himalaya, India.

Dietary reconstruction and influencing factors of oysters cultured in a typical estuarine bay of South China

Blue carbon can be transferred from primary producers to primary consumers through oyster filter feeding. Understanding the carbon (food) sources is crucial for understanding coastal food webs and management of oyster aquaculture ecosystems. In the present study, Bayesian stable isotope mixing models (MixSIAR) were used to identify and quantify food composition within a cultured oyster ecosystem at six sites along a salinity gradient in the estuarine bay of Zhenhai (ZHB). The carbon stable isotope (δ13C) signatures of oyster Crassostrea hongkongensis ranged from −22.06 to −27.27‰, with significant spatial differences (p < 0.001), indicating variations in food resources along the salinity gradient. The primary food source for cultured oysters was suspended particle organic matter across ZHB (55.7–90.6%), with sedimentary organic matter contributing more in the mid-estuary (28.9–44.3%). Partial least squares regression (PLSR) was used to explore the effects of habitat environment and human disturbance on spatial variation in oyster diets. The results indicated that dissolved oxygen, sediment particle size, elevation, and mangrove-related landscape indices were the main factors influencing oyster diet in ZHB. The findings provide insights into the dietary composition of cultured oysters and the underlying factors in a typical shallow bay in southern China, with particular emphasis on the role of terrestrial landscape features. In addition, the findings validate PLSR as a reasonable tool for predicting the food composition of consumers in estuarine bays.

Nutrients and Ecological Stoichiometry Characteristics of Typical Wetland Soils in the Lower Yellow River

Carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium in the soil are the necessary nutrient elements for plant growth, and their contents and ecological stoichiometry can reflect the status of soil quality and nutrient limitation. The Huayuankou Yellow River Floating Bridge Wetland in the lower Yellow River was selected as the research object. The methods of ANOVA, redundancy analysis, and linear regression fitting were used to study the contents of organic carbon (SOC), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), total potassium (TK), alkaline nitrogen (AN), available phosphorus (AP), available potassium (AK), and their ecological stoichiometric ratios as well as the limiting elements of soil nutrients, and the key physicochemical properties that affect soil nutrients and their ecological stoichiometry in the wetland were revealed. The results showed that the mean values of ω(SOC), ω(TN), ω(TP), ω(TK), ω(AN), ω(AP), and ω(AK) in wetland soil were 5.46 g·kg-1, 0.60 g·kg-1, 0.28 g·kg-1, 17.06 g·kg-1, 13.75 mg·kg-1, 6.54 mg·kg-1, and 158.56 mg·kg-1, respectively, which showed an increasing trend from the river bank to the shoaly land and were generally higher at the high vegetation coverage areas than at the low vegetation coverage areas. There were significant correlations among SOC, TN, TP, and TK. Soil C/P, C/K, N/P, and N/K showed a consistent trend with soil nutrients, whereas C/N showed the opposite. The coefficients of variation of SOC, TN, AN, N/P, and N/K in the soil exceeded 50.00%, with significant spatial differences. The average value of C/N in wetland soil was 11.882, which was close to the average level of soils in China, whereas the average values of C/P and N/P were 49.119 and 4.516, respectively, both of which were lower than the average level of soils in China, and the N/P of soil was far less than 14, which indicated that N was limited in the soil. The proportion of clay and electrical conductivity combined to explain 61.4% and 43.9% of the variation in the soil nutrients and their ecological stoichiometry, respectively, which were the dominant soil physicochemical properties affecting the soil nutrients and their ecological stoichiometry of Huayuankou Yellow River Floating Bridge Wetland. The research results are helpful to improve our knowledge of nutrients and their influencing factors in the wetland soil of the lower Yellow River and provide an important scientific basis for the ecological restoration and management of the wetland in the lower Yellow River.

Can policy advantages be transformed into industrial advantages? Evidences from digital economy industry development in Zhejiang Province, China.

The digital economy is a new impetus to promote high-quality economic development. We use the policies of Zhejiang Information Economy Development Demonstration Base (IEDD) and Zhejiang Software and Information Service Industry Base (SISI) established between 2015 and 2017 to design a quasi-natural experiment. By using a panel data from 2005 to 2020 in Zhejiang and the difference-in-differences model, we test the impacts of IEDD and SISI policies on digital economy development. We find that there are significant spatial differences for digital economy in Zhejiang. IEDD and SISI policies improve the digital economy development, that is, the policy advantages can indeed be transformed into industrial advantages. The IEDD policy can promote the digital economy industry development by enhancing the digital infrastructure and financial development; SISI policy can promote the development of the digital economy industry by promoting financial development. The results of quantile regression show that the promotion effect of IEDD and SISI policies increases with the improvement of the industrial basis of regional digital economy. The results of group regression show that the IEDD policy promotes the digital economy development in counties and county-level cities of Zhejiang, and the SISI policy plays a significant role in municipal districts.

Study on spring drought in cold and arid regions based on the ANOVA projection pursuit model

Due to the influence of snow cover and soil freeze–thaw processes in the early spring, the characteristics of spring drought in cold regions are different from those in other regions. This paper takes Qiqihar, a cold and semiarid grain production area in Northeast China, as the study area. Based on factors such as snow cover in the early spring period and precipitation, temperature, evapotranspiration, and soil moisture during the spring sowing period, a projection pursuit model with analysis of variance (ANOVA PPM) was used to analyze the spatiotemporal variation characteristics of regional spring drought. For the ANOVA PPM, based on the grouping of the projection points, local aggregation is measured by the mean square within groups, and overall dispersion is measured by the mean square between groups, thus achieving comparability and balance between overall dispersion and local aggregation. The spatial analysis of spring drought showed that, from a spatial perspective, there were significant spatial differences in spring drought in different subregions, and spring drought was closely related to latitude, with significant differences occurring at different latitudes. The northern region is relatively light, while the central and southern regions are more severe. From a temporal perspective, there are significant differences in spring droughts between different decades (1980 s, 1990 s, 2000 s and 2010 s). Overall, spring drought first intensifies and then decreases.

Spatial Distribution, Ecological Risk Assessment, and Source Identification of Metals in Sediments of the Krka River Estuary (Croatia)

To evaluate the level of contamination and predict the potential toxicity risk, selected metal concentrations (Cd, Pb, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, and As) were determined in 40 surface sediment samples from the stratified karstic Krka River estuary (Croatia). In addition, diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) probes were deployed in situ to understand the mobilization mechanisms and bioavailability of metals in the sediment. The results show significant spatial differences between the upper and lower estuary, with the latter being more affected by anthropogenic pollution. The pollution assessment using the enrichment factor (EF), the geoaccumulation index (Igeo), and the pollution load index (PLI) showed a strong enrichment of metals in the lower part of the estuary, especially of Mn, Cu, Zn, Pb, and As. The statistical analysis (PCA) revealed the former ferromanganese factory and the port as major sources of pollution in the area. Nickel, Co, and Cr, although slightly elevated, may be attributed to the natural origin. The metal mobility in the estuarine sediment was primarily governed by early diagenetic processes (aerobic organic matter mineralization, Fe and Mn oxyhydroxide reduction), which caused the release of metals from the sediment into the pore water and subsequently into the overlying water column.

Use of water quality parameters to assess the ecological health of Atlantic coastal areas in the northwestern Morocco

Coastal waters are confronted with multiple stressors, including chemical contamination/pollution and climate change. Water quality along the Atlantic coast of Morocco was assessed, in this study, at six stations over four seasons, including three heavily industrialized stations (S2, S4, and S6) and three clean stations (S1, S3, and S5), spreading over a distance of ∼300 km from Azemmour to Essaouira cities. The physicochemical characteristics (temperature, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen, suspended matter, and sulfate), and chlorophyll-a, as well as nutrients (nitrite, nitrate, ammonium, total phosphorus, orthophosphate, and silicate) were analyzed to investigate their spatial and seasonal trends in the study areas. The results revealed significant spatiotemporal variations in the distribution of the hydrological characteristics across the sampling sites. In addition, the observed sulfate and nutrient concentrations showed significant spatial and seasonal differences. The disturbed stations showed the highest concentrations of nutrients, while the clean stations exhibited the highest concentrations of chlorophyll-a, particularly in the spring season. As expected, the compressive pollution index (CPI) and water pollution index (WPi) results supported the pollution status of stations. Accordingly, the surface seawater quality was better in the clean stations compared to the polluted stations. According to the CPI and WPi values, the sampling stations were classified in the following descending order of pollution, from strongly and moderately polluted stations to slightly or unpolluted stations (S4 > S2 > S6 > S1> S3 > S5). The total phosphorus, orthophosphate, sulfate, and chlorophyll-a concentrations were substantially higher than the surface water quality standards of Morocco, especially at the most industrialized stations in the winter.The physicochemical, biological, and nutrient data obtained in this study provide a valuable reference for assessing the ecological quality status of the Atlantic coastal environments in the study areas.

Study on the Spatiotemporal Evolution and Influencing Factors of Forest Coverage Rate (FCR): A Case Study on Yunnan Province Based on Remote Sensing Image Interpretation

The study of the forest coverage rate (FCR) is related to the ecological environment and sustainable development goals (SDGs) of a region. In light of the lack of an organic integration method of “spatiotemporal evolution, correlation analysis, and change prediction” and the lack of a methodology that integrates methods of “remote sensing (RS) and GIS, multi-phase LUCC, and construction of econometric models” in the research methods at present, this study focus on Yunnan, a typical border province located in China with a relatively fragile “innate” ecological environment, as the research area. Based on the interpretation of land use/land cover (LULC) data retrieved from seven periods RS images (1990, 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010, 2015, and 2020), the spatiotemporal evolution of FCR in 129 counties was analyzed. Complementary research methods, such as the spatial econometric model, geographically weighted regression (GWR), and the geographic detector (GD), are used to reveal the influencing factors of FCR. Finally, this study predicts the FCRs of 129 counties in Yunnan from 2025 to 2050. The FCR in Yunnan presents an increasing trend year by year, increasing from 28.96% in 1990 to 49.05% in 2020. In addition, it exhibits spatial agglomeration characteristics with fewer values in the east and more in the west. The analysis of influencing factors show that the increases in the per capita GDP, land utilization rate, and annual average temperature, and the implementation of the Conversion of Cultivated Land into Forest Project (CCFP) will significantly improve the FCR, while the increases in the population density land reclamation rate, the proportion of construction land area, and the proportion of soil erosion land area will significantly reduce the FCR. Furthermore, the FCR is influenced by multiple factors, and the relative factors observed not only show significant spatial differences, but also present complex and diverse patterns, with the additional characteristics of being interwoven and overlapping. This study contributes to expanding and improving the methods and pathways of exploring the spatiotemporal evolution characteristics of FCR in ecologically fragile areas using RS methods, providing a reference for increasing FCR and improving the ecological environment’s quality in Yunnan Province and other ecologically fragile areas.

Simulation of spatial and temporal variation of nitrate leaching in the vadose zone of alluvial regions on a large regional scale

Excessive use of fertilizers presents a significant threat to groundwater safety. To mitigate nitrate leaching and ensure the sustainable utilization of groundwater resources, it is crucial to quantify the spatial heterogeneity of nitrogen leaching and its drivers. Therefore, accurate modeling of deep nitrate leaching at large regional scales is necessary. In this study, we have created a computational framework to analyze the transport of unsaturated zone water and nitrate at a regional scale. The framework is based on a process-oriented, watershed-scale computational model that segments the study area into a grid system, with each grid modeled using Richards-based advection-diffusion equations for water and solutes. The research model estimated nitrate nitrogen leaching, accumulation, and denitrification in the vadose zone of agricultural fields in the Baiyangdian watershed, which is a typical agricultural region with complex land use and soil deposition conditions in the North China Plain. The results showed that there were significant spatial differences in nitrate N leaching, denitrification and accumulation with values of 0–388 kg/ha/year, 30–177 kg/ha/year and 75–4778 kg/ha. Groundwater recharge in the wheat/maize, vegetable, and cotton area exhibited a negative correlation with nitrate N accumulation while showing a positive correlation with nitrate N leaching. Nitrate nitrogen distribution indicated spatial heterogeneity, attributable mainly to the heterogeneity in soil texture, structure, and land use. With nitrate nitrogen leaching and denitrification levels reaching 327–388 kg/ha/year and 133–175 kg/ha/year, respectively, vegetable fields pose a direct threat to groundwater. Meanwhile, wheat/maize fields showed the greatest nitrate nitrogen accumulation, ranging from 624 to 4778 kg/ha. This excessive buildup of nitrate in these fields presents a potential hazard to groundwater quality. Soil texture in the root zone had a greater influence on the amount of nitrate leaching and denitrification than soil texture below the root zone. Deeper soil texture (>2 m) was found to mainly control total nitrate accumulation in the vadose zone. To assess nitrate leaching, denitrification, and accumulation at a regional scale within the deep vadose zone, a process-oriented model was developed, considering the intricate associations among land usage, soil texture, and biochemical reactions.
